Well, I'll let you know about the skill tree. emp resistance actually
doesn't seem to work all that well, I've stil got emped (ha! I made up a
word too!), the turn after using it.

After I've done my mercinary/bounty hunter game (really, the professions are
very similar), which as you say will probably have to wait for the next
upgrade, if the trade thing is fixed with the minimize button so as to be
less of a pain, i'd like to try a full blown pirate game, with a bit of
trading thrown in, and yes, i'll be playing as the syndicate.

skills wise, taunt saves my neck a lot! then I've found it handy to try and
balance the high damage and high accuracy skills. Most turns in battles
(when no missiles are involved), I tend to use diciplin and focus beam, but
targit lock and ambush also help.

My one worry with emp skills is accurcy, sinse as you have to have lots of
criminal skills to be able to have emp and exploit, you can't have things
like targit lock, so I wonder how often you miss.

anyway, you can always get some pretty good emp effects with disrupters.

Beware the Grue!

2008-09-18 Thread Shadow Dragon
Yeah, I like thhose skills as well. I'm not really sure how much taunt
reduces accuracy, but it does seem to help quite a bit. I've found that a
lot of the mercenary skills help as well. Things like disciplin, maneuver
and lock I use almost every battle. I never got a chance to go for emp since
I didn't get high enough in the criminal skill tree, but one skill I am
really curious about is cloaking. I wonder what it does? I know you have to
have a target mark on the other person's ship to be able to hit them, but it
seems like it'd be just a bit too cheap to make you completely invisible and
not even grazable. Grazable? Is that a word? Anyway, once I get around to
beating the game with my mercenary, which probably won't be till fleet
combat is fully accessible, I'll have to start over, maybe as another
faction and try out some of the other skills.

Oh, that's really irritating about the paladin, though I feel a fool for
just not trying. then again, it's probably more lucrative earning the extra
hundred and fifty thousand or so with a shadowcat than with an avenger,
sinse the damage is so much increased.

I've actually come to the conclusion that the best sskills in the game are
those that actually stop you from being hit, so skills like evil taunt and
emp strike deffinately have their uses. the one thing that confuses me is
why bog standard taunt doesn't seem to be in the skill tree anywhere, and
doesn't lead you to anyb more skills.

well, its' off to buy a paladin for me!

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-17 Thread Shadow Dragon
Hmm, that's an interesting strategy. Me personally, I'm an all or nothing
kind of guy, for some reason I go for the super upgrades. And actually you
can buy a paladin in about any system that I've seen, I really have no idea
what the not available thing is unless there's other ships that don't show
up. I know I've seen some ships that aren't on the list, for example the
hellcat and the corsair, I think they're federation spacific ships, so maybe
the not available thing is those ships and they don't show up because he
didn't bother to textualize the ships you couldn't buy. From basically the
corvette up though, I pretty much stole my way through the ships rather than
buy them. It's a lot easier on the purse if you can find a ship with a
fairly weak crew. It can still be tough though.

As for focus beam 2, it must be mark, since I don't have either double speed
or emp resistance. For some silly reason I went over into the criminal skill
tree after I got tractor beam, which I got way too late in the game for my
liking by the way, I like your idea better *grin*. So I'm now at rank
admiral and can't get any further mercenary skills, which sucks since I'd
really like to have emp resistance. Ah well, for another time I suppose.

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-17 Thread dark
Hmmm, well I'm not sure on graphics, i'll just have to see when i get there.

about earning money for a jump ship, the prices for fighters are going to
stay the sme aparently, it's only from corvets and upwards that the prices
will increase. i just managed to get a shadow cat (why the heck the you
can't buy a paladin in the solar system i don't know!).

I don't actually find it too much of a problem as a mercienary to earn the
money for a jump ship, but that's because i mix the missions in with bounty
hunting the sensor screen, and don't buy too many ship upgrades, sinse as
you said the game is much more fun when you leave the first system.

what i've just done, was buy only the mars works combat engine, AND DEFENDER
mK iI ECM, then choose advanced tracking, fast recharge, and tractor beam
for the first few upgrades, though if I've got space i usually get advanced
rewards, which iis possible after fast recharge.

even before you get the tractor beam, I've found pirates are rather stupid
about remembering to flee, provided you keep them busy with missiles and use
the focus beam. Traders flee rather quickly, so the tractor beam is
absolutely necessary before you start on them, provided you only attack
enemy traders, you won't have any criminal problemS, IN FACT SINSE
THERE ARE SO MANY ENEMY TRADERS AROUND, i really don't see a point in the
criminal stuff.

I've found with just the ecm and mars works combat, i can take out an
average shadowcat with the right stratogy, for example a mission targit or
pirate, though usually those high bounty pirates have emp and are much
nastier.

what i do then is choose mainly patrol missions, with the odd ambush or
particularly rewarding search and destroy thrown in, and use the sensor
screen at every oppertunity. when my shields get depleated by taking out
pirates or traders, or when nothing appears, i move on.

that way I've managed to get a jump ship pretty qhickly as a mercenary.

the one thing i don't know is whether it's worth buying cargo management or
not, sinse on the one hand it does cost money, but on the other it can
increase loot from traders.

well, that's the way I do it.

oh btw shadowdragon, if your that far on in the game, maybe you could answer
me a question? which ability do you need in the skill tree to get focus beam
II? I know it's either double speed, mark or emp resistance, but i'm not
sure which, and I don't want to make the mistake of buying the wrong one.

Beware the grue!

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-17 Thread Shadow Dragon
I'm not really sure what you mean about the graphics, since all graphics
show up the same with jaws. I didn't see any graphics on the sensor screen
before it got fixed though, so perhaps hal is a bit better at reading
certain types of graphics. Anyway the ship graphics are kind of like the
ones that show up as planet icons, or at the bottom of the screen with
compatibility mode off.

Hmm. I'm not sure if I'm happy about the price change or not. The game did
seem to go a little fast, but it seemed to have about the right balance. If
the prices go up, then it'll go into the problem smugglers3 had where
earning money gets ridiculously tedius. I had a bit of trouble already
earning the money I needed for my first jump ship, since mercenaries have a
hard time earning money in fighting missions early on. I hope at least he
doesn't change the prices too much, or only in the later ships.

Hi shaddow dragon.

I'm not sure how that will work with hal, but sinse I abandoned my syndicate
game as it was going rather slowly and want to make a restart, it'll be a
while before i need that screen.

Are the ship graphics the same as the ones in battle? or more like the ones
on the sensor screen before it was labled. hal's always been able to get the
ship graphics, but before the sensor screen was labled I couldn' click on
any of the blips.

then again though, by the time i get to the point of needing a battleship
it's likely the screen will be labled, especially sinse apparently in the
next upgrade equipment prices are going up so as to slow the game down and
force you to try more equipment types, just see the nielsbauer forum
for details.

as reguards ground combat, i haven't heard anything about that, and there's
certainly nothing like that mentioned in the manual. the closest thing i've
seen are those missions where you have to pick up marines and then drop them
off on an enemy planet, descriptively very nice, but for practical purposes
just two nav point patrol missions.
Beware the Grue!

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-17 Thread Shadow Dragon
Ok, going to reply to 3 different messages here.

Not sure if you've gotten past all this che, but if you've got the latest
version of the patch you should see just about everything on the screen to
start with. I think the only thing you can see if your patch isn't working
properly is some of the travel screen, aka planets and jump points, but you
wouldn't be able to buy ships, upgrade equipment and such. The battle screen
I think has been workable from the start, though I'm not entirely sure.
Either way I believe the patches upgrade from any version to the latest
version, so if you unzipped everything odds are you've got the latest
version.

As for the scan mode, that's mostly for finding pirates and getting into spy
missions and abduction missions and such. The options are actually attack,
communicate and back, and back's the one you want.

Dark, as of right now fleet combat isn't very accessible. Basically it looks
a bit like this. You have 3 options. Attack target yourself, selected escort
attacks and emergency shield recharge. Well I guess you have retreat as
well, but who in their right mind would ever use that option? *grin*. What
you can do, with jaws at least, is click on the graphics that are across
from eachother. In all the fleet missions I've seen, you get a fleet of 3
ships escorting you, 2 destroyers and a cruiser, and you go up against the
same and 3 battleships, so you're actually pretty heavily outnumbered. Once
you've beaten the two destroyers and the cruiser on the enemy side though,
the 3 battleships don't show up as graphics, so your only real option is to
run the mouse straight up from the attack buttonand hope for the best trying
to click on the next ship symbol to select your target. The one thing I
haven't tried yet is ground combat, I can't figure out how to engage it, but
supposedly there's supposed to be missions or raids of some kind where you
can take your crew to a planet and drop your marines planet side and kind of
supress the planets army in that fashion. I'm not sure if he scrapped that
idea or not. Either way, even without it, smugglers4 has tons of features
and is probably the closest thing to a completely accessible RPG we'll get
in a long time. I love it.

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-16 Thread dark
hi shadow dragon.

apparently fleet combat is next on the list, but sinse I haven't got a
battleship yet, I'm not sure how accessible or not it is at the moment.

my only problem with clicking around is that you have to muck about a bit to
see all the trade prices for goods in the system, that's the main
reason I think the tutorial is problematic. i actually did complete it, by
altering the position of the trade window so that hal's vf would read the
information on the planets at the top or bottom of the screen which were
obscured by it, though as i said, i think niels is going to fix this.

the tutorial marker itself didn't show up, but just look for the planet with
the lowest price good of whatever good your told to buy and it'll be that
one.

for the mission in the tutorial, just read the text for the appropriate
location.

Even though the crew hyering is perfectly easy by counting down the columns,
Niels is going to lable that screen as well so as to make things even
easier.

personally as I said, I absolutely love the game.

Beware the grue!

dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-16 Thread Shadow Dragon
Have to say I'm a bit confused. I don't have the problems with having to
click around a lot and such. The tutorial is kind of a pain I admit. I've
never made it through the tutorial, don't think its very accessible. But the
developer is constantly working on the compatibility mode. Maybe he'd be
willing to fix up the tutorial so the icons would show up? Odds are they're
highlighted oddly when the tutorial wants you to look for it, so it doesn't
read as the text icon but instead as the graphic. Personally I think the
game is pretty awesome. Especially when you get up into the later missions,
get yourself a battleship and can participate in fleet combat, crew combat
and ground raids. Yeah you have to use the jaws cursor quite a bit, but
that's sort of what the jaws cursor was made for. *shrug* Are you guys all
running the latest version? In the version I have almost everything is
accessible. There's a little guesswork, for example when you're required to
go somewhere for a mission the textualized icon changes to a graphic because
it gets highlighted differently, and fleet combat isn't very accessible yet,
but I'm sure in the next update both issues will be either fixed or have
work started on them. I reported both this morning. Hope you all start
having better luck with the game.

No temper tantroms I think, i'm already pleased with what niels bauer has
done accessibility wise, remember he doesn't have to. as someone has already
said, the compatibility mode is a work in progress, and already a lot more
of the game is playable than when it first came out.

i think when the trade window is fixed, and he's made the fleet combat
screen accessible (though havn't quite got to the point where I need that
as yet), the game will be one of the all time greats.

Hi Michael.

as i said to che, the trade window does unfortunately obscure several
planets, which makes trading a real pest. if locations are vanishing
suggest making sure the trde window is closed before going somewhere else.
this does make trading a lot slower than in smugglers 3, but I've suggested
that nielsbauer include a minimize button, so that you can look over all the
planets of the system and the prices of the various goods without the window
in the way.

2008-09-16 Thread dark
Hi tj.

As i said to che, if you download the most recent update, 1.0 H, the sensor
screenis accessible, making it much easier to pick out good fat trader ships
or pirates with high bounties on their heads, this makes getting out of your
fighter a lot quicker, even without trading. I think it took me about an
hour and a half, combining missions, bounties and piracy.

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-16 Thread dark
Hi che.

firstly, i'd suggest using the update patch.

then, at the moment trading in the game is a bit of a pest, because the
trade window covers up half the planets of a system, so to see the prices of
goods it's necessary to keep closing the window, clicking a planet at the
top or bottom of the screen, then opening the window again. this is what is
necessary for the tutorial I'm afraid.

i've had a chat with the developer about fixing this, but he hasn't inserted
it into the game as yet.

to be honest I don't bother with trading, sinse it's so long winded to keep
opening and closing windows as is necessary at the moment, i just do
missions and pirate other ships, especially good now that the most
recent update has made the sensor screen accessible, and I currently have a
patan destroyer, about a million dollars, and have stopped several
invasions.

if you really want to do the tutorial, you can do it by opening the trade
window as described, but to be honest right clicking on anything in the game
(i assume you can do this with the jaws curser), willgive you information.

i think the developer would be very interested in discussing jaws scripting,
and I know he's very good about taking suggestions on board. Of course sinse
i use Hal i'm afraid i can't give any jaws specific suggestions though. the
compatibility mode of the game is a bit of a work in progress at the moment,
but I've stil been absolutely addicted to it for the last couple of days,
and i'd recommend it to anyone.

beware the grue!

Dark.

Hi Che. The accessible mode is still a work in progress. You should explain
your troubles to the developer so he knows what to work on. I think you're
having the same problem as I am where locations seem to disappear off the
map just when you need to go to them. It certainly isn't as easy as
Smugglers3. That's for certain. Still, when the accessible mode is all done,
Smugglers4 is definitely going to be a far supperior game. We just have to
be patient and vocal about what does and doesn't work for us.

I went through the tutorial fine. I had a little problem at first finding
out the buy all button but outside of that I was fine with the game.

I've had some luck, and can do it. I use hot spot clicker to simulate some
of my clicks, however, I've never actually done the tutorial.

Also, if you were to have created scripts, I'd help in any way I could!
Good game, a pain indeed to click around a lot. That and I'm tired of
killing over and over and over and over and over and over to try to get the
next ship *grins*

  Hi all,
I purchased Smugglers 4 this afternoon, as I like to support any
mainstream developer that is willing to include features to make their games
more accessible.
But so far, this is a joke I must say. Either that, or I am seriously
missing something here.
I understand this game wasn't designed with the blind in mind, so I
figured I'd have to use the jaws cursor a good bit, I have no problem with
that, but I haven't even done the first part of the tutorial and I am
showing signs of carpel tunnel syndrome here.
When the tutorial says the planet you need to go to has been marked for
you for example, I arrow all over the place trying to find said planet to no
avail, so here I am stuck with no planet to go.
You folks that are playing this game, is this thing actually fairly smooth
to play with a screenreader, or should I just go back to playing Madden 09
on my Wii and forget about it if I am not willing to arrow around dozens of
times to get one thing done? I had thoughts of creating scripts for this if
it turned out to be playable, but right now I don't see that as a
possibility.
Someone please tell me I am missing something here, because the game
sounds really cool.
and yes, I have turned on compatibility mode, (thanks ShadowDragon), and I
have looked at the relevant parts of the manual, even though it is in the
dreaded .pdf format.

[Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-15 Thread Che
  Hi all,
I purchased Smugglers 4 this afternoon, as I like to support any mainstream
developer that is willing to include features to make their games more
accessible.
But so far, this is a joke I must say. Either that, or I am seriously missing
something here.
I understand this game wasn't designed with the blind in mind, so I figured
I'd have to use the jaws cursor a good bit, I have no problem with that, but I
haven't even done the first part of the tutorial and I am showing signs of
carpel tunnel syndrome here.
When the tutorial says the planet you need to go to has been marked for you
for example, I arrow all over the place trying to find said planet to no avail,
so here I am stuck with no planet to go.
You folks that are playing this game, is this thing actually fairly smooth to
play with a screenreader, or should I just go back to playing Madden 09 on my
Wii and forget about it if I am not willing to arrow around dozens of times to
get one thing done? I had thoughts of creating scripts for this if it turned
out to be playable, but right now I don't see that as a possibility.
Someone please tell me I am missing something here, because the game sounds
really cool.
and yes, I have turned on compatibility mode, (thanks ShadowDragon), and I
have looked at the relevant parts of the manual, even though it is in the
dreaded .pdf format.
