Hi, I believe this may have gotten lost in the ether, as I myself did not get the eMail I sent, but I recall Charles mentioning that Shredder for the PC is accessible. TO what extent is this true? So far, I've gotten it to read its moves back to me, but not to see any representation o fthe chess board from withn shredder itself. Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind
Keith, There's two forms of notation. Algebraic notation is easier to fathom. In algebraic the files are lettered a through h from White's queen's rook right to white's King's rook. The ranks are then numbered from 1 to 8 counting from white's first rank. So a move of pawn e2-e4 is king's pawn from 2 to 4. As to playing, there are, or were several board game producers for the blind producing peg style chessboards for the blind that used alternating raised and depressed squares to represent the color, and that had pins or bumps on the black pieces to distinguish them from the white. I have such a board and it works well as you can look at board position without messing up the pieces. I tried that charlse with K chess elite, however I think I must have misscounted moving one of my opponent's peaces sinse each game I tried I'd get a ways through and then the computer would tell me to move something I thought was an empty square or the like. It's odd, on the few occasions I played in braille chess tournaments I didn't have that problem, then again there was always an invigilator watching to make sure those sorts of things didn't happen. beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind
There was a step by step guide to the alter quest on the audiogames.net forum i remember, sinse that's the only way I managed it myself, particularly sinse while I'm used to speaking and talking about moves on the board, eg e2/e4, the notation code used for commands I found rather whacky. To explain these are sets where there are holes in each square on the board and the peaces are on pegs so you can put your mits on the board without knocking them over, one side (usually the white, though not always), has pins on the top to tell them apart. I'm not sure where you'd get one from in your part of the world, they tend to be sold by the same places who sell braille cards, dice etc. Personally, while I understand chess notation, I find it near impossible to hold spacial information about the board in mind without the board. I want to put my hand on the white knight and my other finger on the square it will move to, and then put my fingers (and to a very much lesser extent my disfunctional eyeballs), on the surrounding squares and see if that move will be a bad or good one. This is why I've never got on with the various audio Chess games like BGChess challenge, Kchess elite etc. Sinse while they have some good audio overviews for the board, fundamentally you are still just getting the information square by square, and I don't find myself able to old enough spacial information about the board in mind for that sort of overview to really help me or make it possible for me to play chess. There is nothing that prevents you from using your own board and men, as long as they are of the Staunton design, regardless of whether you are playing against a human or a chess engine. Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind
that sounds like a really good chess set bryan. Sinse the old one I used to own pretty much died due to lack of use (several peaces depegged), I tried buying a new one from the Rnib however i was quite disappointed. The peaces are tiny, however instead of black and white it's more like dark brown and slightly lighter brown (the contrast is quite horrible), and the peaces are extremely small and lumpy. Why not use your own chess set to determine your moves? That's what I do when playing against either a human or a program. Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind
Well the Hadley School for the Blind offers two free chess courses, Chess for Beginners and Chess: Principles and Strategies. You even get a free chess set with the first course which is yours to keep after you complete it. Each course has I believe six lessons, each with an accompanying assignment. The chess set is really nice as well. I still have mine from eight years ago, though I don't play so much these days. Oh freddled gruntbuggly, thy micturations are to me as plurdled gabbleblotchits on a lurgid bee. GroupI implore thee, my foonting turlingdromes, And hooptiously drangle me with crinkly bindlewurdles, or I will rend thee in the gobberwarts with my blurglecruncheon, see if I don't! -Original Message- From: Keith S Sent: Friday, June 27, 2014 6:45 AM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: [Audyssey] chess and the blind can anyone suggest the best way for me to learn how to play chess as a blind person? Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind
My personal advice would be to get a tactile chess set (sometimes called a braille chess set, even though they don't have braille on them), and start playing live against a human. Of course this is me, and I will freely admit my spacial coordination is pretty cruddy, (even in mobility I tend to substitute routes and land mark memory instead of working out where I am spacially), you might be different though I'm guessing by your comment you could be in a similar position, hence my suggestion of a tactile chess set.
