Hi, Maybe that person is running JAWS, and they don't quit or put it to sleep before playing the game? That seems to cause issues with most games. I am able to use the games just fine. He, on the other hand, for some crazy reason, can't click on a menu option to start the games or anything. Any idea why this is happening to him. Re: [Audyssey] Game Help, Please
He has turned his UAC off so I was told that should work. The games install fine. He doesn't get an error, just can't click on any menu options in Jim Kitchens Games, Top Speed 3 or River Raiders. He can play some games that are ones that do not require an install but those that we have installed so far, he can't go past the menu options because he cannot hit his enter key with any results. The game just sits there.. -Original Message- From: Valiant8086 Sent: Sunday, April 01, 2012 11:36 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Game Help, Please Hi there. The person who is having trouble starting those two games might try running them as administrator. Hit the context key on the menu item that you would normally press enter on to launch the game and arrow down to run as administrator. Are they getting an error message? On Mar 31, 2012, at 9:40 PM, Phil Vlasak wrote: Hi, It could be that those games were written in a language that isn't supported by windows anymore such as Visual basic 6. Some game companies have added vb6 libraries to their game installations that fix that problem. If you downloaded and installed Shades of Doom or Jim Kitchen's WinKit, then you have those vb6 libraries and those games will work. Another hint is to install the games as an administrator instead of just install them. When you installed the games did you choose install as administrator? This choice is found by using the context menu key, which is to the right of the space bar between the alt and control keys. Yep, that is where I had him install them to. Here is what happened when he tries to play. He clicks on Kitchens Inc on his desktop. The game loads just fine. He is able to arrow through the different games. He lands on say Spanker. He is able to click on that. Now when he arrows through these options, start game, change voice, change volume, etc., he can't click on anything, not even exit. So he tries to get out of this, but with no luck. He can't hit escape or alt f4, it just seems to have locked up his machine. He has to reboot his machine in order to make it go away. Re: [Audyssey] Game Help, Please
The only thing that springs to mind immediately is that Jaws or another screen-reader might be interfering. If your friend can put the screen-reader to sleep or just unload it while he plays, that would likely do the trick. Just be certain that you make hotkeys that are easy to remember for loading the game once you quit the screen-reader. Most screen readers make a hotkey such as control-alt-n for loading NVDA as an example. Hope that helps. On 4/2/12, MamaPeach mamape...@charter.net wrote: What, that he deleted it? That is, in a word, bizarre. I've never encountered that problem on any of my computers. Not even my newer laptop which has an AMD64 processor and Windows 7 on it. I've even run several of Jim Kitchens games on my Linux computers using Wine, the Windows emulator, without experiencing that issue. Hi, Hmmm...It shouldn't matter If he quits Jaws before or after the game starts. Once Jaws is unloaded it frees up the keyboard hooks it uses to monitor keyboard input and DirectInput can acquire full control of the keyboard. Although, it might be worth a try to test this just to be sure. However, I don't really see this making any difference. Re: [Audyssey] Game Help, Please
Hey Mama Peach and all I think I recall what the issue might be your friend is having. Since Jim's games automatically extract themselves to the winkit folder when installed, I believe they extract to the program files folder as opposed to the programx86 folder where the main Kitchen's in should be. I just remembered someone else having a similar issue. All that needs done is to just copy the game files into the other folder. Re: [Audyssey] Game Help, Please
Hi, The only explanation I can come up with that hasn't been mentioned on this thread so far would be to make sure an antivirus program or firewall isn't blocking the game. I don't see why it would try to block the Kitchensinc games, since none of them connect to the internet, but Top Speed will almost certainly make your firewall pop up a few times. You just have to click on the allow button and it should work after that. A hotkey for jaws would be useful for figuring out if this is the problem. Then your friend can load Jaws and see if a window from his firewall or antivirus is there. If the music is too loud, he can go into the volume control and turn down the volume for the application. It's probably not his computer that's frozen, probably just the game, and after he figures out whether this is the problem, he can either click on the appropriate button to run it properly or simply go into task manager by hitting control shift escape and killing the program that way, saving him from having to do a reboot. Re: [Audyssey] Game Help, Please
Hi MamaPeach, Did you install games on your computer that he hasn't installed on his? If so, tell him to install them. Another example is Swamp. The instructions are a little complicate but it does tell you how to get it to work with windows 7, but the WinKit and Shades of doom installations make the process easier. Okay, here's an update on what is going on with this issue I wrote about before. I had him install winkit from Kitchens Inc games along with all of the games, because he wanted all of them installed, and he installed the Shades Of Doom demo and he is still experiencing the same problem. When he opens Kitchens Inc Games, he can click on a game but he cannot click on any of the options inside of the game such as start game, change volume, change voice, etc. He can't click on exit to exit the game, he cannot hit escape to exit the game and he cannot hit alt f4 to close it either. He has to reboot his system to get it to go away. And the same thing on River Raiders, he cannot click on any menu options. I am so lost as to what to tell him. Hi, Ok, I think I know what the problem might be. Is your friend running a screen reader like Jaws. If so the way Jaws handles keyboard input it conflicts with Microsoft DirectInput. The only way to resolve this problem is to A, quit Jaws, or B, put Jaws to sleep while the game is running. That will resolve the conflict between DirectInput and Jaws. Cheers! Hi, It might be a problem. By default Windows 7 comes with Program files, where 64-bit apps goes, and Program Files (x86), where 32-bit apps goes, and the other directory shouldn't exist. I recommend he check what was installed to Program Files (86), and then try and install them to the proper location. In 90% of the cases most apps should go in c:\Program Files (x86). Hi there. The person who is having trouble starting those two games might try running them as administrator. The kitchenSink games need to be installed under program files (x86) since that's the sort of backward compatibility installation path for windows7 etc. HTH Jacob Kruger Blind Biker Skype: BlindZA '...fate had broken his body, but not his spirit...' - Original Message - From: MamaPeach mamape...@charter.net To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, April 02, 2012 5:24 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Game Help, Please Me either. Re: [Audyssey] Game Help, Please
Hi, It could be that those games were written in a language that isn't supported by windows anymore such as Visual basic 6. Hi, Does he have all the required dependencies. By that I'm specifically asking if he has installed the Visual Basic 6 and DirectXS 8 legacy runtime libraries. Re: [Audyssey] Game Help, Please
Hi, Not necessarily. While Windows 7 comes with most of the DirectX 8 libraries the file dx8vb.dll was removed from DirectX quite some time ago and does not ship with Windoews Vista, Windows 7,or Windows 8. So confirming he has installed and registered that library manually would go a long way to seeing if he has a compatible version of DirectX. Hi, That's not stupid at all. As long as you install from the primary account and if UAC is disabled then you are running as an administrator. You only have to use the Run as Administrator option if UAC is enabled or you are attempting to install something from a standard account. I am not sure, I really doubt it. He is just getting into gaming. I must have obviously just picked up the necessary things by installing games because I know nothing about getting these things or even how to help him go about getting them. Is there a certain game or games that would give him what is needed to play some of the other games that are out there, such as the things you mentioned, if he just installed the game? -Original Message- From: Thomas Ward Sent: Saturday, March 31, 2012 11:12 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Game Help, Please Hi, Does he have all the required dependencies.
