2007-08-10 Thread Che
  Hi Robert,
Those 192.168 numbers are for your local network.
Depending on the router you have, the router itself will be addressed to
192.168.1.1 and the first computer to link up with it will be 192.168.1.100
followed by 101 and so forth.
So if you need to change router settings you can do so by going to
192.168.1.1 in an IE browser, again, depending on the router configuration,
but this is generally the case.
Regarding how to program for internet play, I use a dedicated server for
Rail Racer, not the cheapest solution, but probably the best overall.

I have a linksys wireless router.
when I turn on my computer in the morn..it gets an IP address of

when I turn on my second computer downstairs..it gets an address of
 192.168.1.101

 on some occasions..
my first computer gets an IP address of

Now I'm speaking backwards. A dynamic ip address has no guarantee of

Raul a. Gallegos said the following on 8/10/2007 9:21 AM:
Tristan. Please don't spread false information smile. You have it
completely backwards. A dynamic IP address is one which changes often or
one which is not guaranteed to change. Some isps like Comcast hand out
dhcp addresses which may refresh only once a month while other isps like
Verizon may hand out ips depending on when you connect via dsl and so
your ip may change more often. Again, these are prime examples of a
dynamic ip address. This is why there are such services like
www.dyndns.org and www.no-ip.org so that one can map a hostname to an ip
address no matter when it changes. This way, if you are running a game
server for example, people only need to know your hostname, IE:
topspeed.asmodean.net and that way they can connect to you regardless of
 what your IP address is.

Static ips on the other hand do not change. If you have a static ip
address, it means that no matter how long you are or are not connected
to your ips, you will always have the same ip address. Verizon only
hands out static ip addresses to business type of accounts. Other
companies like Qwest and speakeasy will give you a static ip even if
your account is a residential one.

Hopefully this will clear up any misunderstandings.

Re: [Audyssey] game idea:Battle Bot match

2007-08-10 Thread Trouble
Ok, what you got below is through your router. That will give any
computer connected to it a static ip, because the router holds the dynamic ip.
Now just for your info on your wireless connection. Changing the
password to get into the router is good, but won't keep anyone from
stealing that bandwidth. To stop that you have to enable the wireless
security features on the router. if you go with the standard setup
and go. it will hold the router at what is called open, and everyone
in range can hook up to it. When you set the security up you will get
a key that has to be put in for you to hook up. That will let people
still see you but not connect, and there is a feature on linksys to
shut off the broadcasting, so only you with the keys can get on.

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, that 192.168.1.200 address is a private

in the below email you are totally wrong in your understanding of
dynamic and static ips.
Dynamic ip changes every time you connect to your provider, and is
what all providers give there customers.
Static ip never changes and costs allot more for not changing.
now just because you have seen your ip not change. That don't mean
you have a static ip. it just means that your provider has control of
when it changes and everything else that your modem does.

I have verizon dsl too. My ip dynamic IP changes about every week and a
half, and my static IP changes like every hour or so. The static IP on my
verizon dsl account changes also when I do something on the internet. No,
not like go to a website, but when I download something is a good example,
its weird. I have my wireless connection status showing up on my system
tray, the IP it shows changes the last number about every week and a half.
Usually changes the last didget, and the 1 I get on whatismyip.org, is
always changing.
So, if I hosted a gaming server like you guys are talking about, I would
simply go crazy! Every hour I would have to update the ip. oh My GOD! That

so, while I could test the program on my local network..I would not be
 able

I have no programming skill to make a program to run on a web site to

I am going to have to read several books on AI...artificial

There's only one problem I see. Either the programming for the bot

make it do what you want it to do as an observer. Also, there could be
none of the random hit/miss chance of most games like that, because
the result would need to be the same on both systems. Now, I still
think it'd be cool because you could try out different bots on your
own system and it'd be fun...but I'm not sure how you'd make it much
fun as an observer if every shot hit unless a wall was in the way or
if every shot from the arena hit just because it was fired or dropped
or what have you.

I'd still like to see it.

Let me say up front I am not a great programmer.
but I have this Idea I may work on.
It would be a play by mail game.
Each player would design a fighting battle bot to play against an
  opponents battle bot.
Each player would design the bot and then program the bot.
The game would be based on a certain amount of money to buy the
  parts...defensive and offensive.
when the bot was fully designed..and it would be designed for a specific
  play field.
you would click on save and a text file would be generated that you can
cut and paste into an email to your opponent.
He would then load in his bot..and the text file you sent..and click
  begin
  match.
a SAPI voice would then call off the battle to you.
there would be appropiate sounds for the battle.

you would not be able to change the bot during the match.
you would be stricly an observer.
If the programming is done right..both people should hear the same exact
  battle on their own computer.
The outcome should be the same on each system.
the text file would be encoded so no cheating would be permitted.
No IP address would be needed...as the only internet you need is the
  EMail
  your opponent will send you.
an editor would be provided to create the playfields.
things like power up pads to recharge the bot, obstacles like walls to
  block shots,
maybe some offensive and defensive weapons laying on the playfield to
  pickup?

this is the basics I have hashed out so far..
any ideas on this from the gaming gallery?

think it'd be cool because you could try out different bots on your
own system and it'd be fun...but I'm not sure how you'd make it much
fun as an observer if every shot hit unless a wall was in the way or
if every shot from the arena hit just because it was fired or dropped
 or what have you.

I'd still like to see it.

I had originally thought the same way you do.
but then I found out that with my Verizon DSL account...my IP address is
always changing.
so, while I could test the program on my local network..I would not be able
to test it and make it work like Jean Luc's Sound RTS program.
I have no programming skill to make a program to run on a web site to
re-direct the game like Jean Luc's program does on his web site.
I am going to have to read several books on AI...artificial
intelligence...to learn how to make the drone robots for the player to
battle against.
I often asked Jim Kitchen why he did not take his wonderful games and make
them work thru the net.
Now I see the trouble involved in that request.

Re: [Audyssey] game idea:Battle Bot match

2007-08-09 Thread Robert Montowski
I thought long and hard on the random factor of the game...
to make the game run exactly on two computers..the random function ov VB6
could not be used.
I am considering letting the robot creation program create a file of random
numbers from 0 to 9.
Perhaps a list of 64, 128, or 256 numbers.
This sequential file of numbers would pull a number from the list each time
a random factor was required.
this will ensure both computers pull the same random number and react the
same on both systems.

This will not in any way be an arcade type game...it will be a strategy
game...a programming game.
Just like the programmers at NASA had to program those robots on mars to
react to conditions by themselves according to certain paramaters...so
willthis robot run its program.
I am considering making groups of commands that the user can cut and paste
into their robots programming.
a particulary good piece of code could be shared to other users.
I even considered making the program create encrypted financial dealing with
other users.
Say I sit down and make a kick-whoop-fantastic piece of offensive code..
and another player wishes my code.
I say I will sell you the code for 20 robot credits..and he says yes.
I cut and pasted the encrypted code into email to send to him.
He gets this code and then clicks on pay for the code.
another piece of encrytped code is created which he send to me.
I click on accept payment.
I get 20 robot credits from him..and I generate a passcode to send back to
him in another email.
He cuts and pastes this code into the program and he is debited the 20
credits and he gets full use of the code.

now one thing to consider..do I give him full use of the code? to maybe
resell as his own?
or perhaps he can sell it but as I created the code I get 25% or 40% of his
sale?

This system has to be weighted so the programmers get their moneys worth for
the hard work they put into the design of good offensive or defensive code.

2007-08-09 Thread Christopher Bartlett
This would be interesting. A long time ago, there was a game called
CRobots (pronounced C Robots) where you programmed a robot in a
bastardized form of C and up to four robots competed in a 1000 X 1000
arena shooting one another until only one was left standing.

One might base the proposed game on this engine, which is available
open source I believe, since it was first published in a computer
magazine way back in the early eighties I think.

There may be more modern implementations of this concept; I stopped
paying attention to it many years ago.

I kind of remember playing or seeing something like this battle bot game on
the Radio Shack color computer 3.
You had to program the bot..how far to travel..how often to use radar to see
what was around it..what to do if it bumped into something.
when attacked do you fight or run?
it was a most interesting game..wish I had payed more attention to it..sigh.

I'm not a programmer either however I am more into realtime games.
This would be good.
However.
YOu would need the following things.
1. the generator for all the parts, probably a dll library or some such.
Some random generator for random events, placement of variouls objects, etc.
a place to design bots and fields.
A player vs computer mode and maybe practice modes with no battle.
Some sort of server, to send data to.
Ok, an email would be ok, but well I don't know, I have never played
that before.
