So, does that mean you don't have conversations with passengers in your car,
or sing along with the radio? Those are equally as distracting..

It's not just your hands and eyes that you should be worried about, though.
Even talking while using a Bluetooth creates a distraction for drivers. You
know darn well that your brain can be "seeing" something completely
different if you're engaged in a phone conversation instead of giving your
full concentration to the road. Sure, it's marginally better than having to
drive with your pinkies while using your thumbs to text and looking down at
the phone screen (or over it to see the road peripherally)... but the
difference really is only marginal according to what I've read. Your brain
is still the most important body part to use while you're driving, and you
should be focusing as much of it as possible on your driving and not on
phone conversations.

So don't call me while I'm driving because I won't answer you! :-P~~~

That's why I silence my Blackberry while driving. My Bluetooth, however,
still tells me when a call is coming in, and just simply reaching up and
pressing a button on it will answer the call. A Bluetooth is also handy for
making a call to a number in your address book. Just push the button, and at
the prompt, say "Call Leon Polhill mobile" and it dials the number for me.
Hand is never away from the wheel for more than a couple of seconds, and
eyes are NEVER off of the road.

Kind of reminds me of Mick Jagger back in 1968 saying he didn't want to still

Years later, when he was, he responded to a question about his earlier remark.
He said "well, it's a good song."

I hope Spurrier is still coaching (effectively, not like Blowden) and enjoying

It's your Daily Football Fix! Gainesville Sun staff writers are here to help
get you through the long, hot summer with a daily dose of college football. The
series runs every day until the start of fall practice.

Shortly after he left Florida following the 2001 season, Steve Spurrier went
from being the Head Ball Coach to the Ol' Ball Coach. How did that happen?
"I got to the ( Washington ) Redskins and somehow or another it happened,"
Spurrier said. "I guess I was just another old ball coach, like I'm another old
salesman. It sort of stuck up there. Boy, the Head Ball Coach, I liked that
better. But it doesn't really matter. I don't really think much about it."
So, feel free to call Spurrier the Head Ball Coach or the Ol' Ball Coach.
But don't call him the Old Ball Coach.
Spurrier recently turned 65, but he may be in the best physical shape of his
life. Mentally, he's as sharp as ever — and he's fired up about trying to get
South Carolina over the hump this season. Spurrier always ran and worked out
during his 12 years at Florida . But he's really taken his workout regimen to a
new level in recent years. The result: He feels great and he's eager to coach
for another three or four years.
"Age has nothing to do with how you perform," he said. "Life is all about your
health and your fitness. I'm sort of proud that I've lasted this long and have
not gotten fired. One of my goals is to be a coach that never got fired. I'm
hoping in three or four years I'll be able to hang it up on my own."
Back in the late 1990s, when Bobby Bowden started coaching less and less at
Florida State, Spurrier used to say he didn't want to stay in coaching too long
and become just a figurehead at a program.
At 65, Spurrier is coaching (and running his program) as much as he ever did.
"I never thought I'd coach at 60 when I was 40 or 50 years old," he said. "But
it gets here quickly. All of a sudden it's here and you feel as good as you did
15 or 20 years ago. I still hope to put together a ( South Carolina ) team that
will win one (an SEC title)."
Spurrier credits his long run in coaching to his workout habits.
"I've been working out for 30 years," he said. "I enjoy doing it. I try to
recommend it to everybody, but a lot of people don't listen very well."

That's why I silence my Blackberry while driving. My Bluetooth, however,
still tells me when a call is coming in, and just simply reaching up and
pressing a button on it will answer the call. A Bluetooth is also handy for
making a call to a number in your address book. Just push the button, and at

Sorry. It's just my latest "soapbox". I actually DO have a sense of humor,
but observing drivers weaving while looking down or oblivious to the traffic
around them because they are engrossed in a cell phone conversation is
becoming alarming.

You shouldn't TOUCH your cell phone while driving. Use a Bluetooth and if
your cell phone doesn't support "voice commands", upgrade to one that does.
My cell phone stays in it's holster while I'm driving. I check email/text
messages when I stop. Distracted driving is killing people.

Thanks again, Leon.

I hope you and Paula enjoy the tour of the southwest, and are able to post
when the mood strikes you. Just remember: don't text and drive.

By the way, if you're there, watch out for the speed traps between
Albuquerque and Santa Fe. They are awful.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Ken. I enjoyed doing it.

This is a very special baseball team that we have this year and I want all
Gators to know it. I know Bob Williams up near Bangor, ME couldn't get the
broadcasts on radio or TV, so I kept Bob in mind as I thumb-typed away on
the Blackberry.

Paula and I would be going to Omaha for the CWS, hopefully following the
Gator team, but a family wedding in North Hollywood, CA is launching us this
Monday on a 5-week motorhome tour of the SW. We will be watching the CWS on
TV on the road.

Kind of reminds me of Mick Jagger back in 1968 saying he didn't want to

Years later, when he was, he responded to a question about his earlier

I hope Spurrier is still coaching (effectively, not like Blowden) and
enjoying it for many more years. I also hope we beat him every time we play.

Don't call Spurrier old

Steve Spurrier

The Associated Press

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier is looking to coach another three
or four years.

By Robbie Andreu
Gainesville SUN Staff writer

It's your Daily Football Fix! Gainesville Sun staff writers are here to help
get you through the long, hot summer with a daily dose of college football.
The series runs every day until the start of fall practice.

Shortly after he left Florida following the 2001 season, Steve Spurrier went
from being the Head Ball Coach to the Ol' Ball Coach. How did that happen?

"I got to the (Washington) Redskins and somehow or another it happened,"
Spurrier said. "I guess I was just another old ball coach, like I'm another
old salesman. It sort of stuck up there. Boy, the Head Ball Coach, I liked
that better. But it doesn't really matter. I don't really think much about
it."

So, feel free to call Spurrier the Head Ball Coach or the Ol' Ball Coach.

But don't call him the Old Ball Coach.

Spurrier recently turned 65, but he may be in the best physical shape of his
life. Mentally, he's as sharp as ever - and he's fired up about trying to
get South Carolina over the hump this season. Spurrier always ran and worked
out during his 12 years at Florida. But he's really taken his workout
regimen to a new level in recent years. The result: He feels great and he's
eager to coach for another three or four years.

"Age has nothing to do with how you perform," he said. "Life is all about
your health and your fitness. I'm sort of proud that I've lasted this long
and have not gotten fired. One of my goals is to be a coach that never got
fired. I'm hoping in three or four years I'll be able to hang it up on my
own."

Back in the late 1990s, when Bobby Bowden started coaching less and less at
Florida State, Spurrier used to say he didn't want to stay in coaching too
long and become just a figurehead at a program.

At 65, Spurrier is coaching (and running his program) as much as he ever
did.

"I never thought I'd coach at 60 when I was 40 or 50 years old," he said.
"But it gets here quickly. All of a sudden it's here and you feel as good as
you did 15 or 20 years ago. I still hope to put together a (South Carolina)
team that will win one (an SEC title)."

Spurrier credits his long run in coaching to his workout habits.

"I've been working out for 30 years," he said. "I enjoy doing it. I try to

Spurrier said:

"I never thought I'd coach at 60 when I was 40 or 50 years old," he said.
"But it gets here quickly. All of a sudden it's here and you feel as good as
you did 15 or 20 years ago. . . ."

Kind of reminds me of Mick Jagger back in 1968 saying he didn't want to
still be singing "Satisfaction" in his 40s.

Years later, when he was, he responded to a question about his earlier
remark. He said "well, it's a good song."

I hope Spurrier is still coaching (effectively, not like Blowden) and
enjoying it for many more years. I also hope we beat him every time we play.

Steve Spurrier

The Associated Press

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier is looking to coach another three
or four years.

I try to
recommend it to everybody, but a lot of people don't listen very well."

Not sure that our locked in rivals would be two traditionally strong
teams.

I would wager that LSU and Miss St. would be our traditional rivals.

We had a pretty long tradition with MSU before realignment. Granted,
not as long as our game with Auburn, but from Auburn's perspective, I
can't see it agreeing to have both us and Ga. as its locked in rivals.

Personally, I'd love to have two locked-in traditional non-divisional

championship game, it is not as if fans are denied the chance to see
the top teams from each division play each other.

I would mostly agree.. but these are also (usually) ppl who try to txt as if
they normally would (vs peck letter check road repeat..this way your not
taking your eyes off any longer than if you were to check to see if you have
the clear to change langes.. and even then you still have your peripheral
vision). Before I got my iphone i could text without taking my eyes off the
road because I could feel the keys (knowing where they are). Obviously its
not as easy now.

The ones that are texting while driving are a real hoot. I was behind a guy
the other day going 20 mph in a 45 mph zone. When I finally got around him I
glanced over and he was just texting away, thumbs were flying.

Thanks, Ken.  Paula holds my Blackberry when I drive. :)

I will keep in touch by Blackberry and notebook.  Almost all of the places we
are staying have WIFI.  So I'll be reading along and checking in occasionally.

As for speed traps, the motorhome has cruise control and I always set it for at
least 5 mph below the speed limit, 10 mph less in some circumstances and
conditions.  The GPS also gives my current mph along side the speed limit, so
it's easier to keep up with changing speed limits.  Ther GPS also monitors
traffic congestion on the route ahead, predicts time delays and warns if route
detours are needed before we are caught in traffic jams.

65 mph is about the max I drive, mainly for concerns about fuel mileage.  The
motorhome is very stable at much higher speeds, but costs go up exponentially
past 65 mph. You also don't want to get into a hard, panic-braking situation.
All that stuff behind you in the motorhome can catch up with you fast. :)

Before anyone asks, I'm happy if we get 6.5 mpg.  At 75 mph, we would approach
5 mpg.  This trip will cover 5,549 miles.  6.5 vs. 5.0 mpg is the difference
between 854 gallons and 1,110 gallons on this trip.  At $3 a gallon average,
that's an added cost of $768.  I'll try to keep our fuel costs at $2,500, or
less.  Speeding really doesn't pay when you're driving a motorhome.  That's
what the Firebird is for.  :)

Thanks again, Leon.

I hope you and Paula enjoy the tour of the southwest, and are able to post when
the mood strikes you. Just remember: don't text and drive.

By the way, if you're there, watch out for the speed traps between Albuquerque

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Ken.  I enjoyed doing it.

This is a very special baseball team that we have this year and I want all
Gators to know it.  I know Bob Williams up near Bangor, ME couldn't get the
broadcasts on radio or TV, so I kept Bob in mind as I thumb-typed away on the

Paula and I would be going to Omaha for the CWS, hopefully following the Gator

The

past 65 mph. You also don't want to get into a hard, panic-braking situation.

6.5 mpg? Whew! The oil spill must have you in a panic! J

Thanks, Ken. Paula holds my Blackberry when I drive. :)

I will keep in touch by Blackberry and notebook. Almost all of the places
we are staying have WIFI. So I'll be reading along and checking in
occasionally.

As for speed traps, the motorhome has cruise control and I always set it for
at least 5 mph below the speed limit, 10 mph less in some circumstances and
conditions. The GPS also gives my current mph along side the speed limit,
so it's easier to keep up with changing speed limits. Ther GPS also
monitors traffic congestion on the route ahead, predicts time delays and
warns if route detours are needed before we are caught in traffic jams.

65 mph is about the max I drive, mainly for concerns about fuel mileage.
The motorhome is very stable at much higher speeds, but costs go up
exponentially past 65 mph. You also don't want to get into a hard,
panic-braking situation. All that stuff behind you in the motorhome can
catch up with you fast. :)

Before anyone asks, I'm happy if we get 6.5 mpg. At 75 mph, we would
approach 5 mpg. This trip will cover 5,549 miles. 6.5 vs. 5.0 mpg is the
difference between 854 gallons and 1,110 gallons on this trip. At $3 a
gallon average, that's an added cost of $768. I'll try to keep our fuel
costs at $2,500, or less. Speeding really doesn't pay when you're driving a
motorhome. That's what the Firebird is for. :)

Leon:

I think we can give you the weekend off.

Thank you for live-scoring the other games for us. I know I was very happy
to be able to follow the action via your updates. It was the next best thing
to being there.

Paula and I are really looking forward to this series. I'll not be
play-calling this series on Gatortalk because it's being broadcast on ESPN
Friday and ESPN2 on Saturday and Sunday.

I would have fallen on the floor in total shock if A&M had won that game.
