Randy and friends

I am not afraid to say that I am pulling for Georgia against GA Tech. I do
so for three reasons:

1. Georgia is an SEC team. To further increase the reason to pull for
them, they are playing a pretender conference in the ACC.
2. I want Georgia to be able to go to a bowl to represent the SEC.
3. I want their coach to keep his job. He is beatable.

Florida State talking points: Seminoles insist their attention will not

The Seminoles are in the unusual position of playing a game that means
nothing to its ACC title chances while the N.C. State game at Maryland
determines if FSU plays in the ACC Championship game the next week in Charlotte.

But the Seminoles insist what’s on the line at Doak Campbell Stadium is
even bigger than playing in an ACC title game: A chance to break a six-game
losing streak against their most hated rivals, Florida.

“My focus will be on the Gators,” receiver Bert Reed said. “You can’t

The Wolfpack wins the Atlantic Division with a victory at Maryland
Saturday and secures a spot in the title game on Dec. 4 against Virginia Tech.
N.C. State wins the tie-breaker over FSU because of its 28-24 victory over the
Seminoles last month.

The Seminoles will advance to the title game for the first time since
2005 with a Maryland victory.

“I told all the Maryland guys we’d appreciate it if they’d beat up on
N.C. State,” FSU quarterback Christian Ponder said.

Now comes the big question for Seminoles fans:

Would you rather a win over Florida coupled with an N.C. State win,
meaning FSU finishes the regular season 9-3 but misses out on the ACC title
game and thus a chance to play in a BCS bowl, or a loss to the Gators coupled

for the ACC championship with an 8-4 regular season record.

Nick Moody sealed the Seminoles victory with an interception and 96-yard

interception return for a touchdown in school history and the longest since
Deion Sanders returned one 100 yards in 1985.

Maryland faced a fourth-and-7 from the FSU 19 yard line when Moody sealed
the game.

Fisher was pleased with the defense that limited Maryland to just a field

controlling the line of scrimmage and giving us some opportunities,” Fisher

FLORIDA STATE TALKING POINTS: SEMINOLES INSIST THEIR ATTENTION WILL
NOT BE DIVIDED DURING SATURDAY’S GAME AGAINST GATORS

by Tom D'Angelo

IS A VICTORY OVER FLORIDA MORE IMPORTANT THAN PLAYING IN THE ACC

and will be televised by ABC.

The N.C. State-Maryland game will start at the same time and be
televised by ESPN2.

JIMBO FISHER PRAISES THE DEFENSE

Nick Moody sealed the Seminoles victory with an interception and
96-yard return for a touchdown with 36 seconds remaining, the fourth
longest interception return for a touchdown in school history and the
longest since Deion Sanders returned one 100 yards in 1985.

Maryland faced a fourth-and-7 from the FSU 19 yard line when Moody
sealed the game.

Fisher was pleased with the defense that limited Maryland to just a
field goal in the second half after giving up 13 points in the first
30 minutes.

“Our defense did a good job in the second half creating things,
controlling the line of scrimmage and giving us some
opportunities,” Fisher said.

What he wasn’t happy about was Moody, who added a career-high 13
tackles, taking back his interception for a touchdown and not falling
to the ground.

Although he made it a two touchdown game, the only way the Seminoles
could lose was by scoring. If Moody falls down, FSU is guaranteed a
win by running out the clock.

If not. … A quick score followed by a successful on-side kick and
another Hail Mary and suddenly you are facing overtime.

To be consistent, the home team. It rotates.

Which brings up an interesting dichotomy: if both sides rushed the field every
year, who benefits?

This is an interesting question.  It brings up another.  Who would you fine in
the  Gator Bowl (and yes I know it is not the Gator Bowl anymore) if the fans
rushed the field after the Florida-Georgia game?

SEC fines Kentucky after fans rush field
by Jason Lieser
The University of Kentucky will pay a $25,000 fine to the SEC because its fans
rushed the field following the Wildcats’ win over South Carolina on Oct. 16.

The conference policy went into place in 2004 and start with a $5,000 fine for
the first offense. The second is a maximum of $25,000 and the third is up to
$50,000. If a school is penalized and goes three years without another
infraction, the next violation is considered a second offense.

This is the fourth such penalty for Kentucky in football. The school had one in
2006 and two in 2007.
To the best of my knowledge this has not happened in Florida over the past two
decades. Anybody know the last time fans rushed the field at Ben Hill Griffin
Stadium?

Does it always rain in Tally when we play there? There were torrential rains
during the 1984 game there, too. I was there, had been sick for a week but
refused to stay home and miss that game. We got SOAKED, and the old Doak
Campbell stadium was a freakin' mud puddle when it rained. That was gross. I
remember watching as the rain rushed down the stairs of the bleachers like
there was a creek there. The cheerleaders were muddy and finally just gave up
and started running and sliding in the med. They were right in front of us.
We came from behind to win that game and, despite still being sick and
ultimately getting sicker, it remains one of the best games I've ever attended.
We were sitting amongst Gators but there were some obnoxious Semis near us who
were VERY loud as long as they were ahead. When we came from behind to beat
them, they were extremely quiet. My sister had just married a Semi the
Saturday before that, and I think he was wishing he had found another family to
join. LOL.

I remember Gator fans rushing the field twice, both away from home. The
first time was in the Gator Bowl after the 1984 win over the dawgs - the
goalposts came down that time.

The next was in the win over the semis in Tally in 1986. They turned on
the sprinklers to try and get the fans off of the field, but since much of the
game was played in a downpour, that had little effect.

I think Spurrier made the remark about "maybe they should have let the
fans on the field to celebrate" after the 1997 32-29 win over then ranked #1
FSU.

LOL.  Jacksonville to NYC is about twice as far if you're measuring by driving

LOL. Jacksonville to NYC is about twice as far if you're measuring by
driving time but less than twice as far in miles. I've driven them both.
I'd much rather go to Key West from Jacksonville.

2010-10-07 Thread Jerry Belloit
When I lived there in the early 80s, Miami was truly and international city.
The population back then was about 1/3 Anglo, 1/3 Hispanic, 1/6 Black, and
1/6 Haitian. Of the Hispanic population, there were significant Columbian,
Venezuelan, and Nicaraguan populations. In the Black population there were
also a good sized African community, particularly Nigerian. In addition, in
the Anglo community, there were significant Canadian, German, and French
groups. At the time I lived there, there were more international banks in
Miami than anywhere else in the United States, including NYC, Chicago, and
San Francisco. At that time, Miami was one of the most awesome places I
ever had lived. There was something to do all the time. We could go to a 3
or 4 star restaurant every evening and not repeat for months-the cuisine was
incredible-Indian, Spanish, Columbian, Argentinean, Cuban, Hungarian,
French, Belgium, Thai, .

Let's not get carried away. Miami is South Florida. While it has a
population of Yankees, native Floridians, and immigrant Caribbean islanders
and Central Americans, it's still Floridaa and American. Florida has other
multi-ethnic areas: Tarpon Springs and St. Augustine come to mind.

When native Floridians say South Florida they usually mean Palm Beach, Broward
and Dade counties.

It's not a geographical definition; it's a cultural definition.

There is 'Old Florida' and then there is 'South Florida.'  The definition may
be
broadening to include the Fort Myers area of the SW coast due to recent rapid
growth and immigration.  These areas include high levels of immigrants
from other parts of the country and foreign countries. Much of this growth has
occurred since the invention of air-conditioning, which I well remember.  Key
West is part of 'Old Florida,' but you may be right that it is Caribbean, like
many of 'Old Florida's' coastal fishing villages.

When native Floridians say South Florida they usually mean Palm Beach,
Broward and Dade counties.

It's not a geographical definition; it's a cultural definition.

There is 'Old Florida' and then there is 'South Florida.' The definition
may be broadening to include the Fort Myers area of the SW coast due to
recent rapid growth and immigration. These areas include high levels of
immigrants from other parts of the country and foreign countries. Much of
this growth has occurred since the invention of air-conditioning, which I
well remember. Key West is part of 'Old Florida,' but you may be right that
it is Caribbean, like many of 'Old Florida's' coastal fishing villages.

TT was a bit taller than Brantle and, more importantly, left handed. Perhaps
both Pounceys snap high and to the left, but we never noticed it as it fit

Well if you want it that way, Miami is an international city. Some argue
that it is not even in the USA.

Generally, the term "south Florida" refers to the greater Miami area, and
implies everything urban that goes along with that.

Geographically,as pointed out here by the pedantic among us [smile], there is
much more to south Florida.

In terms of culture, I'd put Key West closer to the Caribbean than I would to
south Florida.

Looking at a map, there ain't much South of Pahokee.  It looks like it's all
swamp!  I am dropping out of this, becasue evidently the only thing that is
South Florida is the Caribbean Sea being that Key West isn't even South
Florida.  I suppose there is NO South Florida it's all in my imagination and
tour books.  :-)  What is exactly South Florida?  ...and is means is.  :-)

No, I will argue that Key West is South Florida.  If Key West isn't South
Florida, then it's the Caribbean.

Correction: THERE IS NO CROSS-FLORIDA BARGE CANAL.

If there were, the fact that Yeehaw Junction is south of it would NOT make Y.J.
South Florida, either.  Come to think of it, Key West isn't South Florida.

No, South Fl is where on a football weekend you see the following:
100 people wearing Dolphins jerseys
500 people wearing Giants jersey
497 people wearing Jets jerseys
350 people wearing Eagles jerseys
336 people wearing Steelers jerseys
324 people wearing Patriots jerseys
5 people wearing a Gator, Seminole, USF, UCF and a cane jersey.
1 guy wearing a FAU jersey.
That ain't Lakeland.

I've gotten a surprising number of e-mails this week asking why Burton

wanted to get Burton eight touchdowns. Burton will tell you he did
because he wants to be just like Florida cornerback Jeremy Brown, who
also wears No. 8.

The only touchdown not scored by Burton against Kentucky last week?

An interception return for a TD by #8, Jeremy Brown.

Coincidence?

Last week, I mentioned Florida freshman Trey Burton switching his
uniform from No. 8 to No. 13. I glossed over it and so did you —
until you saw him score a school-record six touchdowns against
Kentucky.

I’ve gotten a surprising number of e-mails this week asking why
Burton changed numbers. If you ask Gators coach Urban Meyer, it
was because he wanted to get Burton eight touchdowns. Burton will
tell you he did because he wants to be just like Florida

It's not quite that extreme, I think. If Larry was a first round draft pick
in 1975, he was probably at the end of his college career... so maybe 21 or 22?
Trey is a freshman so he's probably only 18 or so, right? That would make his
grandfather 56 or 57. So two generations in 38 or 39 years.
