I was a Florida High School Activity Association referee for about 15 years, and I can assure you that we were paid, including mileage...at the start of each game in cash. We always rode together in one car to the game and were the first out of the parking lot after the game for obvious reasons...someone didn't like us after the game at every game. Let me assure you that referees earn their money. We attended required training sessions monthly and prior to every sport, bought our own uniforms, whistles, flags, etc. The rulebooks for each sport had to be studied and memorized. Quizes were given frequently by the association. After-game videos were watched by the crew and the officiating was self-critiqued. For those who think officials try to influence the outcome of the game, I couldn't tell you which school had the ball most of the time...it was just a color to me...'white ball.' Probably. I really wouldn't bet on making the playoffs either. They run too hot and cold. Who knows who'll show up from one game to the next. They trade off their good talent every year them management complains when no fans come to watch. But, it's great fun to go see them play. Thats the Lightnings (and several other franchises) problem too. Very hot n cold.. and a attendance to match. Example:... I am going to see the Senators vs LIghtning in Tampa on 4/8. I am 5 rows back from the ice... and right near center... normally.. that would be impossible (and really expensive) tix to get right? Less than $200 (still no chump change I know... )... Im not sure if thats entirely a factor of the economy.. or if its just fairweather fans. They do have a lot of FSU fans down there.. Most of the club sports get some funding from the university. Some use that for coaching stipends, others for travel or training needs. I played Lacrosse at UF and we had two coaches that received stipends, our jerseys were paid for and the officials, etc all came out of the student activity fees. Now of course, that was 20+ years ago, so never mind. They don't work for free. And I'm not sure I would want to play in a game where they did! Most of the club sports get some funding from the university. Some use that for coaching stipends, others for travel or training needs. I played Lacrosse at UF and we had two coaches that received stipends, our jerseys were paid for and the officials, etc all came out of the student activity fees. Now of course, that was 20+ years ago, so never mind.
