Re: [brlug-general] Eatel wants in Baton Rouge

2011-08-18 Thread Shannon Roddy
I've always liked Eatel as a company. I wish they served my area. I know a
very good network guy that went to work for them a couple years ago... I
think they both benefited from that deal.

I had eatel dialup for many, many years

Re: [brlug-general] Eatel wants in Baton Rouge

2011-08-18 Thread Edmund Cramp
Previously EAtel were a phone and Internet access company when they last
supported Baton Rouge customers - I'd imagine that EAtel's interest these days
has more to do with their TV/Video delivery opportunities.

Eatel phone and Internet were delivered in Baton Rouge at that time by
reselling AT&T lines. When AT&T pulled the rug from under EAtel by raising the
line fees to drive them out of the market EAtel quit servicing Baton Rouge.
What's planed now seems to be a fiber delivery network to the end-user...
Something my buddies inside AT&T promised me was "just around the corner" 20
years ago.

I've got AT&T, let me run outside and check ...

... nope - it's still moldy old copper. Sometimes I feel like I'm living in
the dark ages.

Re: [brlug-general] Botnet building?

2011-08-18 Thread Edmund Cramp
The .exe deliveries stopped today - well, back to the normal half dozen or so.
This has been typical of previous "outbreaks" - we get flooded for a few days
then it all goes quiet.

I would imagine that the 'bot herders attempt to recruit continuiosly - so
perhaps they simply dole out a range of IP addresses to each agent 'bot for
targetting and when that computer gets discovered and shutdown, the attacks
agains my IP addresses cease?

Until the next time...

Looking at the time stamps it all went quiet after midday but it had started up
around 3am - so I'm guessing the net sending this out is based over the pond.
When they took Rustock down the first thing I suspected was that my Internet
connection had gone south on me!

I've added .xls to the "not permitted in" list recently to stop the asian speak
fishing spam which has been popping up regularly for a while ever since we started
selling into China.

We run Spamassasin and Kaspersky on everything coming in - Kaspersky is really
a backup, SA does the heavy lifting.

Re: [brlug-general] Eatel wants in Baton Rouge

2011-08-18 Thread Edmund Cramp
Let's face it, COX does not want any competition because otherwise COX would
have to start offering competitive rates.

As for the "build-out" clause - I can see the reason for it, essentially it's
social engineering but I think a better way of encouraging universal service
would be to simply tax the service areas differently - this would give all of
the companies an incentive to support the less densely populated areas.
Otherwise "build-out" becomes a monopoly for COX preventing smaller businesses
from entering the market.

Does anyone remember the maneuvering when the Lafayette decided to offer
internet service locally? Both COX and AT&T fought tooth and nail to stop them.

As a business I was with EAtel when they did service Baton Rouge and they were
a pleasure to work with - this is back in the days when ISDN was cool - and
they knew how to provision a line in one visit. I've love to give them a try
again. I don't like monopolies.

Personally I think Eatel should have a build-out agreement, but
36-months is too short. Maybe 120 months. But honestly, that is
between Eatel and the parish. It has nothing to do with Cox. If Cox
doesn't like their own agreement, then they should renegotiate with
the parish. If the parish is no longer profitable for them, then they
can leave.

In short, screw Cox. Typical case of a large provider whining cause
they're not making any money and they don't want any competition.
It's BS.

I have mixed feelings about the controversy that Cox brings up.
One the one hand, they should be held to the same standard as everyone else, but
on the other hand, i would like to see local businesses get some
advantages over national business.

what do you guys think?
