I appreciate the nomination by you and others, but after a whole month
of thinking on this, I must decline, mostly for reasons of time commitment.

Council actually isn't a job I'd want to do; I'm not out to be in
charge. I'm sure I'd take the same approach that I would to everything
else I do; do the job that's before me, but I don't think I'd be able to
devote enough time to do a *good* job. I've no problem doing any
necessary keelhauling etc., but I'm not sure that I have the time. And
no matter how fast I'd try to learn, I'm not starting off with the same
detailed knowledge of ebuilds and Portage that the other candidates have.

Meanwhile, I'll continue making a difference within Gentoo by doing
documentation for any and all interested parties, and anything else I

While any efforts you put forth if elected to the council will
appreciated. Let's not take a malicious stance against our current
council. I don't thing they are intentionally alienating, or delaying in
summaries.

Anyone notice no more GWNs? IMHO they like many of us are simply over
committed. So things don't always get done in reasonable or ideal time
frames. I doubt there is any intentional delay in presenting the
summaries and etc.

Then again, their meetings aren't held in private, and one should not
solely rely on summaries. Unless there is a policy stating such
summaries are required or etc.

GWN (was: Re: [gentoo-dev] Nominations open for the Gentoo Council 2007/08)

2007-07-14 Thread Lars Weiler
* William L. Thomson Jr. [EMAIL PROTECTED] [07/07/14 13:29 -0400]:
 Anyone notice no more GWNs?

Well, I noticed it. And I read the news from June 14 on
http://www.gentoo.org/

Unfortunately, all our GWN-Editors stop working on it after
some months. It's a really time-consuming job. Think about
four to five hours just for collecting all articles, put
some glue between them, create the XML and posting it on the
list. And count in another four to five hours for writing
most of the stuff yourself (which is the default, as the
contributions are very rare).

So, currently we don't have a GWN for two months already.
It was our main publicity medium for telling users about the
current development inside Gentoo, showing the faces of some
devs and notice them about updates in the tree. We have
other media which can compensate the GWN, like the Forums,
the GLSAs, the dev-mailinglist etc. But the GWN was a good
compendium of all.

Don't let it die!

Thank you, Jan, but I have to respectfully refuse the nomination, as
the council simply isn't what I'd like to be part of in Gentoo. I'd

Arrr me mateys!

err, that's not until Sept. 19thmy bad. Reading over the current nominees,
the field looks pretty varied. It'll be a fun race. So I suppose I'll throw my
hat into the mix to make the race even more fun!

My campaign pledges:

 - Pikachu Petting zoo (great for kids)
 - Cement mixer in the lavatory (don't ask)
 - Orange sherbert dispenser in the lounge (after we expand it to
accommodate all the other proposed vending machines)

But the best is for last: A MIPS Roller coaster!
- 4 different styles of roller coaster with 3 separate tracks each
- One track will be simple, yet quite mundane, another semi-functional,
but a bit unstable, and the third wholly untested.
- They'll range in size from some of the biggest coasters you've ever
seen to some being embedded in the lounge (after expansion, of course)
- All the parts will be requisitioned from eBay, so the price should be
  quite cheap.

Agreed. We could decide we do not elect the council members based on
their coding skills or any other type of technical skill. But instead
have the nominees do some campaigning before the elections, and make
direction-setting propositions for the coming year.

Another thing that bothers me is the possible overlapping between
council members, trustees and devrel. I wouldn't mind at all that any
dev could only be one of these at most at the same time. I know that
resigning from a position won't end the relationship between you and
your ex-fellow devs from the group you've just quit, but at least
functionally the link doesn't exist anymore. Plus, taking into account
that we have a life outside of gentoo, and that these functions are
the critical ones, having only one of these positions means a better
chance to be efficient.

On Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 09:53:36 +0200, Seemant Kulleen wrote:

 Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to put a few thoughts out there as people contemplate
nominees and the elections for the Gentoo Council. I personally am on
the fence about running this year, because I think there are a lot of
talented people who *should* be on the council.

Now that I've said that (the *should* bit), let me expand on its
meaning a little. I think the Council idea is great. However, I think
the Council should be charged with a little bit of direction-setting and
leadership as well. In the past year, the council did make some
decisions, and helped to mediate some controversial issues.

There were a couple of things which I thought were lacking, however:

 1. The council was (by design?) a reactive force, rather than a
 pro-active force.

 2. There's no way to follow through on the Council's decisions.

I think these points involve *every* gentoo developer (and would-be
developer) and not just the Council. If you have a GLEP or an idea and
it gets approved by the council, now what? That's the thing: follow
through on it! A question is, perhaps, should the council follow-up with
previously approved GLEPs and inquire as to status updates?

For an exemplar of the way I think the council should be is
Spanky/vapier. Solar also does this well. Both of them take a
leadership role in general in the project and are generally respected
and admired for it. They both have great ideas and a vision. I think
that should be explored further. This project needs some leadership, as
the events of the past few months show fairly clearly.

Encouraged by this email and hoping that it is ok to do so, I will
nominate myself.

Thanks,
/Alexandre

Re: [gentoo-dev] Nominations open for the Gentoo Council 2007

2006-07-06 Thread Seemant Kulleen

Thanks for listening,

Mike Frysinger (vapier)
Michael Sterrett (mr_bones_)

I would also have proposed Donnie Berkholz (spyderous), but he already
declined nomination.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but there is no point in nominating

Anyway, I would like to nominate:

As you're nominating and voting, please keep in mind that council
members should be highly competent and experienced in the technical
aspects of Gentoo as well as our philosophies. The former is the primary
realm in which their decisions lie and the latter is the basis for them.

Probably only that one will be productive, two disruptive, and the other we'll
know when we'll see.
