Re: [gentoo-user] pgadmin3 - SOLVED

2004-01-18 Thread steve fox
No one really seemed interested in this subject, but if anyone is
curious, I did get this response from the pgadmin mailing list:

 snip ---
They moved the pgsql includes out of /usr/include and into
/usr/include/postgresql/pgsql in the lastest ebuilds.
I got the pgadmin3 ebuild to install by running:

  cd /usr/include && ln -s postgresql/pgsql/* .

before emerging pgadmin3.
-- snip -
works like a charm. pgadmin3 is a nice tool if you're managing a lot of
dbs.

Hi,

After being away from my system for over a week, running my daily

updates. Things ran fine until getting to gnome-vfs, which doesn't
build, and gives the following error:

I've checked the forums and found this thread

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=84685&highlight=gnomevfs&sid=0f9967a614a7178817cbc6caa3075a28

which discusses this exact error. I've attempted the suggested fixes
herein and gnome-vfs still won't build.
I've also rolled gcc back to 3.3.1-r1 and recomplied glib, and the error
persists.
I will appreciate any suggestions.

[gentoo-user] apache won't start after upgrade to apache 2 and php 4.3.2

2003-07-15 Thread Steve Fox
Hi,

I've upgraded to Apache 2.0.47, php 4.3.2 and mod_php 4.3.2-r3 and see
this error when I try to start apache:

Syntax error on line 84 of /etc/apache2/conf/apache2.conf:
Cannot load /etc/apache2/extramodules/libphp4.so into server:
/etc/apache2/extramodules/libphp4.so: undefined symbol: ap_block_alarms

libphp4.so is located in /etc/apache2/extramodules, apache was emerge

Any hints would be appreciated.

I know but nobody seems to have a solution for this problem :-/
See my remarks below ...

I suggest that you use the full path to
startkde (/usr/kde/3.1/bin/startkde) in your ~/.xinitrc.

It does not matter how I start KDE, it always crashes. I tried your suggestion
also :)

KDE starts up, but as soon as it tries to restore the session, it crashes.
In the console I can read 2 lines:
Session Management error: Could not open network socket
the rest is scrolled of the screen
Perhaps that is en error I must solve?
After KDE crashes, copy ~.xsession-errors to a new file so you can
review the errors or post/email them.
When using startx, I can only start KDE as root :-/
try 'chmod 1777 /tmp' to set the 'sticky bit,' then try startx again as
non-root user.

Otherwise, try 'unmerge xfree' then 'emerge xfree-4.3.0-r2' from
/usr/portage/x11-base/xfree . That's how I've gotten KDE to run, and
certainly beats re-installing your entire system. (;

[gentoo-user] kde/gnome won't start with xfree 4.3.0-r3

2003-06-24 Thread Steve Fox
Hi,

KDE 3.1.x and Gnome 2.2.x won't launch from KDM into xfree 4.3.0-r3.
The result in KDE is a 'ksmserver crashed' error; Gnome reports that it
can't start. I've backed down to xfree 4.3.0-r2 and all seems to work
just fine. In fact, KDE has never run better, and for the first time in
my experience it's faster than wmaker.

This is on a v 1.4 rc3 system. Anyone else getting these errors, or
able to run the combination of kde + xfree 4.3.0-r3 successfully?

Re: [gentoo-user] problems starting kde

2003-06-23 Thread Steve Fox
I have been able to get kde to start again by unmerge'ing xfree and
emerge'ing xfree 4.3.0-r2. I tried a re-emerge of 4.3.0-r3 to no avail,
and I don't think I should have to back down my versions just to be able
to log in, especially considering that in a few minutes I will run my
daily 'emerge sync && emerge -UpD world' only to see that emerge will
suggest upgrading to 4.3.0-r3, which will lead to the problems that
caused me to begin this thread. Any suggestions?

On another note, to answer the question of a previous post to this
thread, I do not know the specific advantages to setting one's CFLAGS to
match one's cpu, but I do know that I everything runs more quickly and
with more stability if I have CFLAGS set to 'athlon-mp'.

I was looking at this thread and was wondering why I don't have the

#CFLAGS="-march=pentium3 -O3 -pipe"
CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe"
# If you set a CFLAGS above, then this line will set your default C++
flags to
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

I notice that I don't have the {CFLAGS="-mcpu=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe} line.
Am I missing out on some optomisation here? Or could this be a factor in
why my KDE starts and others' doesn't?

[gentoo-user] problems starting kde

2003-06-20 Thread Steve Fox
Hi,

Following a recent reboot, I'm having problems logging into kde 3.1.1a
or 3.1.2. I get the error 'ksmserver crashed' s and then I'm suddendly
returned to kdm.I am able to log in to wmaker, and I've cleaned out
all kde references in /tmp on this system which is updated daily with
'emerge sync && emerge -uD world'

This system is also running X 4.3, here are the entries from
.xsession-errors for a typical crash, looks like I'm having problems
with a network socket, but I am welcome to any advice on how to proceed:

Cool, just making sure we don't double up on the reporting, assuming

I'm following Kurt's advice, I've backed off some of the USE flags and
trying to rebuid. Have you submitted a bugz?

[gentoo-user] emerge -u world fails at Qt

2003-04-03 Thread steve fox

Hi,

After doing 'emerge sync' I've attempted 'emerge -u world'. The build
works fine until it gets to x11-libs/qt-3.1.2 where it fails,
with the following errors:

make[3]: *** [.obj/main.o] Error 1
make[2]: *** [sub-psql] Error 2
make[1]: *** [sub-sqldrivers] Error 2
make: *** [sub-plugins] Error 2

!!! ERROR: x11-libs/qt-3.1.2 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 125, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)

psql and mysql are installed ... I've tried unmerging mysql 4.x and
re-emerging mysql 3.x, based on some advice I got, but I still get the
same errors. Does this look familiar? What else should I check?

This is an upgrade from 1.4_rc2.

Thanks,

Steve

I do indeed get the same error. Looks like I'll be rebuilding on a new

[gentoo-user] emerge sync gives i/o errors

2003-04-01 Thread steve fox
Hi,

After running emerge sync I get the following errors:

!!! Rsync has not successfully finished. It is recommended that you keep
!!! trying or that you use the 'emerge-webrsync' option if you are
unable
!!! to use rsync due to firewall or other restrictions. This should be a
!!! temporary problem unless complications exist with your network
!!! (and possibly your system's filesystem) configuration.

individual errors preceeding this final output read, for example,

readlink dev-perl/Date-Calc/Date-Calc-5.0-r2.ebuild: Input/output error
readlink dev-perl/Date-Calc/Date-Calc-5.0-r3.ebuild: Input/output error
readlink dev-perl/Date-Calc/Date-Calc-5.0-r4.ebuild: Input/output error
readlink dev-util/xdelta/xdelta-1.1.3.ebuild: Input/output error
readlink dev-util/xdelta/ChangeLog: Input/output error

I have run the 'emerge-webrsync' followed by an 'emerge sync' or 'emerge
rsync' as recommended, but end up with the same errors.

[gentoo-user] emerge -u world fails at qt build

2003-04-01 Thread steve fox

Hi,

After doing 'emerge sync' I've attempted 'emerge -u world'. The build
seems to work fine until it gets to x11-libs/qt-3.1.2 where it fails,
with the following errors:

make[3]: *** [.obj/main.o] Error 1
make[2]: *** [sub-psql] Error 2
make[1]: *** [sub-sqldrivers] Error 2
make: *** [sub-plugins] Error 2

!!! ERROR: x11-libs/qt-3.1.2 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 125, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)

psql and mysql are installed ... does this look familiar? What else
should I check?

This is an upgrade from 1.4_rc2.

Thanks,

Steve
