Hi... I seem to be getting some kind of problem with nvidia drivers. I
have them worked before.
The module is in fact working now, however the glx extensions are not.
If I try to compile a package that uses opengl, it fails configure
because it can't find GL/gl.h.
I'm not sure what went wrong, but I filed a bug in gentoo's bugzilla.
Anyone else got into the same problem? (this happened both on 6111 and 6229)

Not seen the rest of the thread, but surely it's an

emerge nvidia-kernel nvidia-glx

opengl-update nvidia

(maybe modprobe nvidia & add to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 if
not already)

while you are booted into the kernel that you wish to use, run

emerge nvidia-kernel

then for good measure

emerge nvidia-glx
opengl-update nvidia
modprobe nvidia

then start X in the normal way, which for gentoo is:

/etc/init.d/xdm start

the nvidia.ko module needs to be re-emerged for every new kernel. it is
specific to the kernel version.

Re: [gentoo-user] Nvidia with Kernel-2.6.10-r6

2005-01-30 Thread Captain FantastiK
Hi
I did this at last: I installed the 6111 of both nvidia-kernel and glx
(emerge "
&& nvidia-glx-1.0-6229) but I have the same problem again. I think maybe its
because of X server. Should try to remerge it

Other thing I found strange: when I used startx before the error occured ''
No device detected... No screen found) on the top of the screen there was
somthing like:

Build System: Linux i686 kernel-2.6.9-gentoo-r13
Current Build System: Linux i686 kernel-2.6.10-r6
The thing is when I installed X for the 1st time I was with
kernel-2.6.9-gentoo-13 but Now I am using the 2.6.10-gentoo-r6...

Cheers

The GF4 was a MX440 card. I don't know about the TNT2, it's inside a

I don't see the AGP module in the list of loaded modules. I would make

make sure to load the module for your specific AGP chipset.

Just a shot in the dark, but do you have AGP support compiled into the
kernel, both generally and for your specific chipset?

I simply don't have this problem. I recently upgraded to 2.6.10-gentoo-r6
and (after the requisite re-mergin' of media-video/nvidia-kernel)
everything just works.

I'm using the latest nVidia kernel module (66xx) and a GeForce 2 chipset.

You'll hear differing opinions about the nvidia driver; many folks will
tell
you they work fine, and many folks (including myself) will tell you they
don't.

Before I dumped the nvidia card, my only working nvidia setup used an older
linux driver from www.nvidia.com (the 6111 driver).
I can tell you the nvidia module (whichever one you use) is sensitive to
the
settings in the xorg.conf file (i.e. dri should be disabled).

Send us the /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the relevant sections of the xorg.conf
file and we might be able to help identify the issue. Also try some kernel
modules from the www.nvidia.com site (shouldn't have to go back too far to
find a working version).
And don't forget to a) rebuild/install/emerge the working driver after a
kernel install and b) modprobe nvidia when your system is starting but
before X starts.

So which GF4 and which tnt2?

I ask as I've seen certain Nvidia cards not work at all, pre-6xxx drivers
because the Mfg. had some specific bios loaded on the card. And, from
reading some of the various posts, seems to to indicate that there are
race conditions induced in certain cards - slower ones, or those with
a bios that has had previous, known problems.

fwiw - both my GF3 and my 5950XT work fine with the new driver.

It would probably be pretty useful if there was a checklist of things
to try out - reducing the AGP settings, reducing resolutions, etc., along
with some increased ability of - lshw, uhinv, etc. to actually read the
bios version of the Gfx card. But Gfx card vendors seem to hate letting
end users know anything useful about their Gfx cards and consider the
bios version almost a secret.

I didn't say it failed for all older cards (or all users).Search Google
and the forums and you'll find plenty of other examples of this.

It's not. This happened as soon a 6629 was released, when I was running
kernel 2.6.8 or .9. I had both a GF4 and a TNT2 stop working in exactly
the way described with that driver version, irrespective of kernel
version. Dropping back to 6111 fixed it.

Huh? I'm running a GF3 with those drivers.

I think what the issue here is the original poster is running 2.6.10-r6
and it's that specific kernel with the newer nvidia cards that is failing.

gentoo-dev-source 2.6.10-r4 is working with the 1.0.6629-r1 nvidia-kernel
and no problems for me. But I've not upgraded to the -r6 sources, thus
there may be some new feature causing the breakage.

You shouldn't need to re-emerge nvidia-glx, only the kernel modules.

I do it automatically by putting this in /etc/conf.d/local.start

# Re-emerge NVidia drivers after a kernel compile
lsmod | grep --quiet nvidia || \

Which Nvidia card and which version of the driver? The 1.0.6629 drivers

I have the nvidia driver working under 2.6.10...

1) Did you re-emerge the module after you compiled the new kernel? (I
always forget to do this).
2) did you remmeber to type "modprobe nvidia" to load the module?
