Re: [gentoo-user] Reading emails from both Gentoo Linux and MS Win

2003-10-26 Thread Larry Wright
I'm doing the same thing. I bought a barebones system from tigerdirect, and
run Gentoo + imap + fetchmail + squirrelmail. My wife can check mail from her
Windows XP box, I can check it from KMail, Evolution, Thunderbird, mutt, etc.
There's a little setup involved, but worth the effort IMO.

There is another very sane option... switch to IMAP, keep all the mail
on the server. :-) Then you have LOTS of choices for clients in any OS.

If all you have is pop accounts, turn a box into a local IMAP server,
and use fetchmail to pull stuff down and deliver it to the "server" machine.

I switched to IMAP a number of years ago and haven't looked back, as
long as the server's backed up, my mail's there and accessible from
anywhere with squirrelmail (web) or an IMAP/TLS client.

Hall was right, my ISP offers POP as the only option.

Setting up another computer to act only as a mail server seems a bit too
much for me. I guess I'll try at least Mozilla and Opera, perhaps KMail
&
Eudora combo too.

Thanks for all the help!

This was exactly what I was looking for - I would like to be able to see
my local folders in Windows too. Now I'm just wondering whether this
can be accomplished with KMail and any Windows mail client?
I just checked Eudora's website and it appears they use MBOX format, which
KMail also does (or can). There seems to be some gotchas with it, when
mixing between Windows and Unix filesystems though.

Here's the page that explains it:

Haven't found a way to do that with Kmail (which I agree is a comfortable mail
client) -- kmail does allow you to store your mail in mbox or dir format, so
maybe something is possible.

Also a good way to go. At www.clarkconnect.org you can find a download which
will turn a spare PC into a gateway/web server/mail server and automatically
provide you with IMAP, POP3 and Webmail (Squirrelmail) if you don't fancy
doing the set up work yourself.

Have your Outlook (or whatever you use in Windows) set to "leave a copy
of message on the server". This way when you get back to gentoo the
mail will be available to download with Kmail.

I do this also (using WinXP and Eudora at work to check personal mail)
and what I do is set the Windows mail client up to leave messages on
the POP server with the option to delete them from the server *if* I
delete them locally, i.e. empty my mail trash. This way, I delete 90%
of the messages I see daily (mailing lists, usually). The ones I
want, I usually just leave in my inbox. When I get home, I check mail
and those messages that I didn't delete get delivered here.

I have one email account set up in Kmail and Outlook Express. I have no
problems using the email account at all. If I have an important email, I
make sure to send it to my other email aliases on Kmail so I can retrieve it
later.

Also, if you have SSH access to your emails, you can always check your emails
by using Secure Shell.

I guess, you will need to create a fat32 partition for data exchange and use
Mozilla email client.
Keep your emails on the fat32 partition.

I am assuming that LINUX and windows both can write on that partition.

let me know, if it works.

[gentoo-user] Reading emails from both Gentoo Linux and MS Win

2003-10-22 Thread Sami Salonen
I have a dual setup with Gentoo Linux and MS Win XP. My wife uses Win XP
and sometimes while she's working I would like to be able to check my
emails without having to reboot to Gentoo.

In Gentoo I fetch my mails from my remote server with KMail & POP. I
have a shared disk with Win and now I would like to know what kind of
setup I need to have to be able to fetch my mails either from

a) Gentoo
b) MS Win

and have the same local mailbox available in both systems?

Can this be done with KMail and do I need to tell it to store mailbox in
some specific format? What software should I use in MS Win? Have anyone
else tried this?
