Using the graphical for the first time in a qemu VM ... very spiffy and I like it so far! goodbye console installs - I have (not) fond memories! I didn't keep error. 3) ran revdep-rebuild It came up clear after one shotting a couple of things I think. I ran it because of the error attempting to install strace. I didn't keep the error but after revdep-rebuild one shotted kpdf-? and maybe something else, strace emerged without error. I can't think what in that activity would cause a disk error especially since none of the activity involved /dev/hdb6 which is not a system directory (/dev/hdb6 = /anex2) And is primarily a backup disk. There may have been a backup run though... The last one happend at 9:30 and this boot problem showed up fairly soon after. If you get a message to run fix-fixable, then follow those directions. It could be as simple as not shutting down properly or having had to reboot without shutting down at all. A status bit is set on the drive which tells fsck that it was not shutdown properly. Reiser is unique in that it can't really check the root partition carefully because it is always mounted read-only when it checks it. I noticed that I get requests like the following in my apache log: 70.121.133.60 - - [07/Mar/2006:21:31:05 -0500] SEARCH /\x90\xc9\xc9\xc9\xc9\xc9\ The above is one line and it is 30,000 characters long in the log file. Near the end of that line should be the HTTP return code Apache gave for that request. What is it? On my box it always returns 414 (Request-URI too long), so I doubt it would be a problem, beyond a major annoyance when going through the logs with 'less'. A URI string like that is almost certainly a client trying to exploit a buffer overflow. I've never seen it being a problem with my (limited) experience running apache. [gentoo-user] Bind Questions
Hi, I am learning Linux DNS server (named) and I found that the host hostname command worksonly if there is an entry in the corresponding domain zone file(i.e. localhost.zone) and the dig -x ip command works only if there is an entry in the corresponding reverse domain zone file(i.e. 0.0.127.in-addr.arpa.zone). And itis not necessary to enter hostname in hosts file. Also in the same network there are many linux and windows clients but the Linuz DNS server (named) is not giving any response to the host or dig command by its own. Can any one tell me how the Named/DNS server works? Howit discovers neighboorhood(local LAN) hosts? Also can we check/list all the hosts/ip addresses thatare cached by dns server? If yes, then HOW? The machine no longer boots to any level that a user could use. I'm told there are lots of messages on the screen about being unable to find files. (/usr/bin, /usr/sbin sort of things...) That happened to me too ;-) But the reason was quickly clear: I had deleted /usr instead of /usr/*! Remember: OK, so far I cannot get into the machine so I don't know how to double check that but I'm pretty sure I didn't do this. The issue in and around these instructions, for me was that: 1) I'm in a completely out of disk space situation 2) I'm trying to move /usr 3) /usr includes /usr/bin and /usr/sbin which is where all commands are to basically use the machine and make the changes. (mv, cp, ls and all the normal stuff.) so I 1) Copied everything to the new partition 2) Removed everything from the original /usr except /usr/bin and /usr/lib. The only copy of /usr/sbin is on the new partition. /usr/lib had to remain for me to use vim to edit fstab. 3) The new partition was labeled using e2label 4) fstab was edited to mount the new partition at the existing /usr direcotry which still contained /usr/bin and /usr/lib 5) As a backup, since I had removed most of /usr to create space I now made a new directory /usrBACKUP and placed a copy of what was left in /usr there so I could get to it if I needed to. 6) Unmounted /mnt/usr_temp and rebooted. The messages (I'm told over the phone by a 78 year old man who is hard of hearing) are in and around not being able to find /usr/sbin. I don't know what they really say as we didn't try to get that detailed. He has decided to ship the machine to me via FedEx and I'll have to fix it here when it arrives. He didn't want to mess with Knoppix or the Gentoo install disk as he felt it was way beyond what he could do. Again, thanks for the ideas below, but since the machine is 350 miles away it's hard to do the experiements below. I'll do them when it arrives next week. Cheers, Mark 9. delete the old /usr directory to free the unused space: cd /mnt/something/usr rm -rf * NB: do not delete /usr itself, just its contents, as /usr is the mount point for the new partition; Let us suppose that your /etc/fstab looks like: /dev/hda1 /boot type opts dump/pass /dev/hda2 / type opts dump/pass /dev/hda3 /usr type opts dump/pass The first and simplest try: reboot from a livecd, then: mount /dev/hda2 /mnt/something ls /mnt/something/usr If /mnt/something/usr doesn't exist, then: mkdir /mnt/something/usr reboot You could check that the new /usr partition is there, before rebooting: mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/something_else ls /mnt/something_else The old /usr contents should be there. Why not? So, if your reboot doesn't work, reboot again from a livecd and check /etc/fstab. Let me/us know! Sergio Hi Sergio, OK, the machine arrived here about an hour ago overnight express. It's now up and running. The mistake was mine, but I think it wasn't something that was very clearly warned about in the online docs, or at least I don't remember being warned about this. I created a new partition and copied all the information over. I labeled the partition USR using e2label and then carefully copied an existing line from elsewhere in the fstab file and changed the specifics to mount the partition, or so I thought. When the machine arrived here and I booted the new partition was not mounted, but I was able to immediately mount it by hand. Inspecting the fstab file quickly revealed that the line I had copied from elsewhere in the fstab file had the options 'noauto, noatime' sort of line. I removed noauto, rebooted, and the machine appears to be working fine. Since the machine is here I'll do a thorough set of updates and hopefully get it shipped out again on Monday. Live and learn! Both fbsplash/framebuffer and fglrx work fine; aside from the fb console background, I can even play mplayer videos in the getty console, which is also a framebuffer operation as far as I know. I have heard that enabling the radeon framebuffer is a bad idea, though (it doesn't work well with the fglrx drivers). But stick to vesa or vesa-tng, and you should have no problems. I haven't, from 2.6.13 kernels up to my current (2.6.15-r7), and with fglrx versions from 8.8.whatever to my current 8.22.5. Could you tell me the options you are passing to the kernel at boot time (I am using grub) for the vesa-tng ? Sure, sorry it took so long to get back to you; I've been busy in RL. (from an old grub.conf backup; ignore the kernel version, as the options don't change-- I just change the title as I upgrade). Gentoo_current (2.6.12-gentoo-r10) root (hd0,1) kernel /vmlinuz ro quiet root=/dev/hda5 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr:3,[EMAIL PROTECTED] splash=silent,fadein,theme:livecd-2005.1 CONSOLE=/dev/tty1 It's pretty much exactly the same as the example on the Wiki (http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_gensplash#GRUB_Example), except that with the upgrade of splashutils, I now need mtrr:3 so that the splash comes up in a timely fashion (there's an einfo in the ebuild about this iirc), and of course changed for my system specs. The only thing that gave me a problem is that I had to set [EMAIL PROTECTED] as my default resolution for vesa-tng in the kernel config itself; you're not supposed to /have/ to, but if I didn't, I got errors when using the livecd themes (no 8bpp pictures, which is correct, since the livecd themes don't have 8-bit pictures, but this meant that the drivers were for some reason defaulting to 8-bit if I didn't specify 32-bit in the kernel. Which according to another thread on this subject is not correct behaviour-- if I specify 32-bit in the grub kernel line, it's supposed to use that instead-- but that's what it did on my system anyway. Specifying CONFIG_FB_VESA_DEFAULT_MODE=[EMAIL PROTECTED] solved the issue, since I don't like the Emergence theme, which does have 8-bit pictures, so worked correctly in all cases). Hope this helps, Holly -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

James A few notes on your bugzilla submission. 1) The component should be Ebuild 2) After you submit the original bug, edit the Keywords field and add EBUILD and submit again. I know, it's redundant, but that's the way it's supposed to be done. Bugzilla should have more fields open on the original submission page. 3) Your summary should contain a little more info, like (NEW EBUILD) or (VERSION BUMP) along with the category the ebuild should belong too. Something like this: /net-mail/courier-imap-4.1.0 (VERSION BUMP) This helps the bug wranglers properly assign the bug. You also could view the changelog and email the maintainer privately with this request. Something as simple as renaming an ebuild for a new version could occur quickly. The 3rd line, # $Header: $ needs to end with a $ after the : and space. The /var/cvsroot stuff does not apply for new ebuilds until the maintainer publishes it. Lastly, I notice that there are a fair amount of patches going on, and with these you need to be very careful. The patches should be examined against the new files and make sure they are even required. Sometimes, simply renaming a file is insufficient. I hope you don't mind these comments. They are designed to protect you from the wrath of the bug wranglers who have a low tolerance threshold sometimes for incorrectly submitted bugs. I have discovered it uses a newer codec however (FMP4) that prevents viewing the videos on older Xine install, but installing mplayer and/or vlc on those machines is a workaround. I guess it's a problem of building XIne with the right libraries but not every distribution makes it as easy as re-emerging in Gentoo. Xine on Gentoo amd64 works however. Now putting the video back on a DVD is another problem. I've been playing with DVDauthor so far but my standalone players won't play the DVDs (that do play on computers however...) I'm trying to find something that I can use to rip and then remake DVDs. I have some japanese dvds that won't play on almost any regular dvd players because of the stupid region thing. K3b didn't seem to have anything for doing that, so I tried dvdrip/dvd::rip. Whenever I run dvdrip, it just goes to the next line and says [filterlist] (re)scanning transcode's module path /usr/lib/transcode... and sits there for as long as I let it without actually doing anything. I can't seem to find anything to skip that process or anything. Can somebody please recommend another tool or show me how to fix dvdrip? As another participant pointed out, fetchmail has long delays when compiled with ipv6 support, on an ipv4-only machine. Probably it does an ipv6 lookup, waits for the timeout, then falls back to ipv4. Since I use fetchmail, that is more than a hypothetical consideration for me. The whole point behind -* is to prevent future surprises. Yesterday it was emboss and ipv6. Today it's apache2. What's next; and when? The apache2 USE-flag is enabled on your system, causing one or more packages to depend on Apache. Run `emerge -pvuDtn world` to find out what package is depending on Apache and echo 'cat-egory/package -apache2' /etc/portage/package.use, or simply add -apache2 to your USE in make.conf to disable Apache completely on your system.
