You won't be uninstalling using "emerge -av --depclean =sys-libs/binutils-libs-2.27" becuase there will be dependancies. You would have to "emerge -C =sys-libs/binutils-libs-2.27" You can either reinstall it using "revdep-rebuild" or "emerge -1av =sys-libs/binutils-libs-2.27" Be warned the strip command is also part of the package. If you have a 2.0 sounds system you will have to tell VLC to downsample the channels to 2.0. If you are using pulseaudio you have to tell pulse that you only have 2 speakers. I am sure that you have a 5.1 surround card and that is what it is trying to use. What can I do about it and why can't I have both as previously. Many thanks for a hint, Helmut I think what the want you to do is put app-misc/tracker -gstreamer or app-misc/tracker -ffmpeg into your /etc/portage/package.use file. Re: [gentoo-user] evince / firefox will not print to a specific directory
That is interesting. I have the exact same problem. Tried to save it to the desktop and it saved to my home directory. On the second try I typed in the directory that I wanted to save the file. Instead of "output.pdf", I put "/home/ill/Desktop/output.pdf". It's not a fix but it works. I just started another Xfce session by typing "startx -- :1". I am pretty sure you can also use "startxfce4" without editing the file that you are editing. [gentoo-user] [Slightly, but not entirely, OT] Help Python!
I don't know whether this has percolated to Gentoo users yet. http://pyfound.blogspot.ch/2013/02/python-trademark-at-risk-in-europe-we.html A company in the UK is trying to trademark the use of "Python" for IT related products. The Python Software Foundation is seeking evidence for consistent prior use of the term Python in the software and related goods context to defeat the trademark application. Considering that portage is largely python under the hood, I think it would not be wrong to say that Gentoo has a bit of a stake in this. Cheers, W

[gentoo-user] revdep-rebuild ignoring Ctrl-C
Hi list, just discovered something slightly unexpected. I am on gentoolkit-0.3.0.7. I started running revdep-rebuild on the console. The process starts, found the broken deps, and started with the emerge. Before it starts the emerge process, I can interrupt revdep-rebuild with Ctrl-C After it starts the emerge process, hitting Ctrl-C on the console drops me to bash, but evidently the emerge / revdep-rebuild continues running. (The processes live on and continue to compile and spew messages on the console.) I honestly don't remember whether it has always been like this or is this some new behaviour on my computer. But it is somewhat annoying (just discovered that earlier when I suddenly needed to pack up and go in a rush). Thoughts? [gentoo-user] continue an installation
Hi list, Suppose that I tried to emerge a package, and the compilation phase went through without problems, but it got stopped in the installation phase. Is there a way to (after I fixed the problem) to tell portage to install the (now all already compiled binaries sitting in /var/tmp/portage) directly without having to redo the compiling phase? Case in point: I just tried to update dev-lib/boost to 1.52. The compilation went without a hitch, but the installation died because of file collision against (I think) boost-1.49.0-r1000. Now that the colliding files are no longer there, is there a way to tell portage to go ahead an install boost-1.52 from the compiled sources in /var/tmp/portage ? Unless you want to load the math module every single time you start Python, it is perhaps better to create an alias (say, python-calc) in bash (or shell of your choice) using the `-i' option of python like alias python-calc='python -i loadmath.py' or if you only need one single command alias python-calc='python -i -c "from math import *"' which will give you an interactive session with the math functions preloaded. I end up with the same result when it comes to the 8400GS. I have also tried the nouveau driver with the same result. I have to disable the acceleration for it to work. When I change the bios setting to use the PCIe it doesn't show the 6150 at all in lspci (I Think). I am using the same xorg.conf file that I use for my 8400, nothing about it has changed except for the addition of the suggestions of Paul. Even that change still have the 6150 still working. I started using it as a headless server for awhile and playing around with CUDA, now I am back to using it as a desktop but more for XBMC connected to a TV. I still use it to share the net, DNS, DHCP you know all that good stuff. Kernel Version 3.3.8-gentoo-r1 Tried to build 3.4 series but it just crashes out this computer, haven't tried the 3.5 series yet. I also just looked through my /var/log/messages file. It is nothing in there about the crash. It just jump time 2 minutes. That is the same thing that would be in dmesg right? I will switch back to the 8400 to take a look at dmesg for the crash if I can ssh in still. -- Willie Matthews matthews.wil...@gmail.com

[gentoo-user] I am tired of this one.
Hello everyone, I have been dealing with this problem for awhile now. I have two nVidia video cards, one is a PNY 8400 GS PCIe and the other is a 6150 LE built onto the board. Problem is I want to use the nVidia driver with my 8400 GS but when I do try to use it, it will just lock up the entire computer. Sometime I can ssh in and sometimes I can't. I don't have compiz or anything like that. I am using the xfce compositor. While I do get to use the card for about 30 seconds to a minute, I can't open the nVidia X Server Settings panel, display panel nor anything that has to do with flash in chrome. A couple of the things that I have noticed about the Xorg Log is that the 8400 GS is reported as having 512mb or video memory when I know it is only 256. The 6150 is reported as having 256 and I am not sure how much that one is using. I have a feeling it is shared. When I am using the 6150 LE and I have the 8400 GS in also. The nVidia X Server Setting also says the same amounts of video memory. I haven been using this install of Gentoo for years now. The only thing that has changed in that time that has to do with Video Cards is Cuda. I use to use it a little for experiments. All in all the 6150 doesn't support Cuda and the 8400 GS does. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. -- Willie Matthews matthews.wil...@gmail.com

Re: [gentoo-user] Need Help!
Fist thing I do is start XDM, login with my normal users. I can't open Session and Startup. Like I said before, I haven't been on it in XFCE for a long time. When I do that the screen becomes blurry, no keyboard, mouse or ssh access to the computer. I assume that the entire computer is frozen. There is nothing in /var/log/messages but a jump in time from when it crashed to when it started to boot again. Can't read dmesg, if I am not mistaken that starts over when you restart the computer. Haven't tried to read the Xorg.0.log or the .xsession-errors yet. I am going to try it again now and see what it says about this. [gentoo-user] Need Help!
Hi All, I have been running a gentoo box for quite some time without a desktop manager. Did a lot of upgrading in between time also. The problem I am having is when I login I can't open any Windows. The only one that has open without crashing the entire computer that I know of is VLC. Any help is greatly appreciated. -- Willie Matthews matthews.wil...@gmail.com
Re: [gentoo-user] revdep-rebuild
I have decided to upgrade my system. I haven't done it for awhile because it takes so long on a Intel Nano with 1GB of RAM. I normally only upgrade the programs I use to most along with any upgrade requirements that it has. This may be what is causing all of my problems.
