I followed the instructions for creating a panorama from 4 pictures in the Beginning Gimp book (Apres - AkkanaPeck) and it looks great except I have a dark vertical shadow where two of the images meet. How do I get rid of it? I am working on Linux Debian testing with Gimp 2.6.10. Briefly, this is what I did: 1. Make an new image a little larger than 4 X the width of one picture 2. Add first picture as a layer. 3. Add the second as another layer 4. Overlap image two over image one until they line up. 5. Add layer mask to image 2 6. Add gradient to layer mask - black to white from edge of second image to 3/4 of the way to edge of image 1 7. Repeat as needed for each new image By looking at the image, I would say the vertical band of darkness is the area of the gradient/overlap of the two images. I am a complete novice at this Thanks! Your shadow on the seam is caused by a general color mismatch between the right part of the left image and the left part of the right one. Creating panoramas requires to set the camera in manual mode to make sure it won't change exposure parameters between the various shots. And even once you have done that you still have shadow problems to sort out because your photo has vignetting (slightly darker in the corners) and the seam may be done between the border of a picture (dark) and a more inner part of the next (slightly lighter). And this assumes of course that you have got the geometry right, and corrected any tilt in the pictures, etc... To make it short, assembling panoramas in Gimp is a lot of hard work. The only pictures that aren't too hard to assemble in Gimp are those from a flatbed scanner. Invest you time in making Hugin work. This will be a lot more rewarding in the end. Hmmmthat is very discouragingthe panorama from Gimp looks great, except for the two vertical black shadows where three pictures were joined. The sahdows are over water and sky.Gimp is so powerful, I am surprised there isn't some way to get rid of them. They're just using the existing thumbnail that's embedded in the file. Most cameras embed a thumbnail in the JPG file, some do not. Your friend's camera probably just doesn't have those thumbnails embedded. I tested a bad image and a good image using Jeffrey's Exif viewer ( http://regex.info/exif.cgi), and both images had an embedded thumbnail. The only difference I saw in the two files from the two cameras was that the image from the bad camera had this warning;thumbnail size does not match image size. The image size from the bad camera was 5,184 × 3,456 and the thumbnail was 160 X 120. I think this warning is referring to aspect ratio. Anyway, I could not see any difference in the data from both pictures, but then I am not an image expert. To keep this on-topic: Gimp and most other image editors have an option to include a thumbnail when saving a JPG file. [Gimp-user] OT - Having Problems Displaying Image Thumbnails
My apologies for this OT post, but I need some help from an image expert, and I thought the Gimp list might have one or two. When I upload images from a friend's digital camera, a Java web app is not able to create thumbnails (they appear black with the title of the image in the image area). However, clicking on the missing thumbnail renders the full image. When I upload images from a different camera, the same app generates the thumbnail and also renders the full image. Is there a special setting that camera's have to have set to allow thumbnails to be created? Both file types are jpeg. I am not seeing any error messages from the app. I have the same problem with a Python based web app that displays thumbnails of images - all the thumbnails from the one digital camera are not rendered (ie white), but the full image is displayed when I click on the thumb nail. Images from other digital camera's display both thumbnails and full images. The only reason I mention this is that the Python app (obviously) does not use the same image rendering code to generate the thumbnails, so this leads me to believe the problem is with the image itself as opposed to the Java software. I am not an image expert, but I hope there is someone on the list who might be able to enlighten me as to why some images do not render a thumbnail and what I can do about it. Is there some JPEG setting that prevents an app from generating a thumbnail? Thanks! [Gimp-user] Annoying Initialize Error
Having installed Gimp 2.6.10 I get this file-mgr application error box popping up - The application failed to initialize properly bla bla. I can OK to continue and no other problems occur. I did have this happen previously but found an easy method to stop it but I can't remember how or what it was I did! Am running XP SP3. I have found the simple answer and I post it for anyone that might, like myself, have over looked the obvious. Ignore the Tool Box and click Select and in the Drop Menu choose From Path. Choose the color, select the fill tool and click once on the text, you'll see the ants marching when the tect is selected. Thank you, Bill. [Gimp-user] Edit Zoom ratios?
I do a lot of picture rendering and find myself zooming images to ratios of 3:1 and 6:1 (300% and 600%, respectively) for a majority of jobs. Can these be added to the popup menu at the bottom of the window instead of having to manually enter these values each time via View Zoom Other? [Gimp-user] Genius Pensketch tablet
I'm using a Genius Pensketch tablet 9x12 under Windows XP SP3 AMD Athlon 64x2 dual core 4200+ to run GIMP v2.6.8 and experience a problem with the pen mouse not drawing. The tablet mouse and all other mice draw okay. The pen mouse will move about and select buttons but will not draw in GIMP, Inkscape or Synfig but functions okay in Microsoft paint, Artrage and OpenOffice draw. The input device selection does not correct the problem. In GIMP (and Inkscape/Synfig)the moving arrow is missing on the X axis. Anyone any ideas how to rectify this problem? Problem solved. I received a driver for the mouse stylus pen via KYE systems and can be downloaded from http://download.geniusnet.com/2009/Tablet/Gimp_Beta.zip I hope this information is beneficial to other users. -- Mark C. [Gimp-user] Scaling a foto
If I were trying to reduce the size of an image while preserving definition I would look at changing its resolution ie from 72pix x 72pix to 288pix x 288pix, reducing the images apparant size (to 1/4 the starting size) while keeping all the pixel information. HTH I agree with this completely. I make a lot of sigs for people that normally cannot exceed 500x200px. As such I will use many photos/pic that need to be rescaled to a much smaller object. The only way I have found to maintain clarity is to change the resolution to a much higher res. Nothing else has worked for me. [Gimp-user] Can a default cursor be changed?
I would like to use a 'Paths' cursor that offers more precision. I currently use GIMP 2.4.7 + Windows Vista on a PC. Can the default cursor for Paths be changed to something more precise? Crosshairs, fine pointer or something similar to what is found in Photoshop would be ideal. If you let Ubuntu do it for you, then you have to accept the limitations that come with that. Ah, named pipes can be quite useful, mostly for one-off situations where there's a better solution that just isn't in place yet. Note that mknod is primarily for device files and doesn't actually support the p type for named papes on all systems; if you find one where mknod blah p doesn't work, try mkfifo blah. -- Mark J. The comma isn't the problem; there's nothing special about commas in Scheme strings. It's the output function you're using - (write) formats things in Scheme source-code form so they can be (eval)'ed when read back in. To just output some text as text, use (display) instead. The layer you get get when you paste is only temporary, and automatically anchors as soon as you do something layer-related. If you want a pasted image segment to become a new permanent layer, select Layer-New Layer while there's a floating selection. Note that the new layer will still only be as big as the selection you converted. [Gimp-user] Scrolling with the keyboard broken? (2.6.3 on OS X 10.5.6)
I did a cursory search to see if anyone else has this problem; apologies if I'm repeating a known bug. I've just installed 2.6.3 (I was previously running 2.4.x) using the Gimp on OS X prebuilt package. For some reason I can no longer scroll with the arrow keys. I tried resetting keyboard shortcuts; then I tried manually mapping the scroll functions to the arrow keys. Neither step helped. Nothing at all happens when I press the arrow keys. This is really slowing me down when I have to reach for the mouse to pan around a zoomed-in image. Has anyone else seen this behavior, on any platform? Any suggestions? -- Mark J. I'm using a windows version of Gimp, 2.2.1.3. I notice I don't have the capability for multiline text, which I believe is provided by the gdyntext plug in. I've been unable to find a windows version of this plug in, and cannot build it from source using MS C++. Would anyone know where to turn for this? [Gimp-user] Save For Web Option?
Hi All, am a rather experienced Linux user for the past 2yrs or so, but, not much with Gimp. I used to use Fireworks/Photoshop on Windows some time back, and am wondering where within Gimp I can just save as for web, and it allows me to resize etc. I can't seem to find that option anywhere in the menus. All I see is, save, save as, save a copy, save as template. I have a 14.5mb file that I need to get to under 500kb or less. Could someone point this non-gui fool in the right direction? Cheers. Uninstalling the Gimp is totally unnecessary just to try to correct a problem which is not really a problem. In Windows Explorer, you can simply click on Tools Folder Options and then File Types to look for the file extensions that you wish to re-associate with a different program. Secondly, even if you do uninstall the Gimp, you will not lose any of your images. Not even the ones you may have created with the Gimp. After all, they are just images, not an integral part of the program software itself. The uninstaller would not know of their existence. Also, they will remain with the name they were given in the location they were saved. If I click the button next to the font name, with images of Aa in that font, I get a font selection dialog. I can then select Sans Bold or Sans Italic or Sans Bold Italic or any of a wide range of other such fonts. YMMV. Then yoiu can try different ways of getting this sillouete layer to the layer mask of the top image, to trying to let only the parts where people appear transparent. You will need to work a lot to find good combinations of operations to do on the layer masks (you will have to blur + play with curves or levels on them) I think what you desire would be easier with three instead of two photos from the same place - or your sillouete layer will contain data of people on both photos. With three photos you have to further generate a second sillouete layer, and then combine both sillouetes to generate a suitable mask for one of your layers. It will requiere quite some experimenting - and I know this I am writing must be sounding confuse. If you have three photos of the same place, mail me (it can be reduced resolution version) of then, and I might try to document all the steps in detail. If you just have two images, send then anyway ... but it may be harder. Discovered that my inability to open a .jpg was due to a missing libexif.50.10. After finding the right version, Gimp worked. This is, of course, updating version 2.0.2 on Novell Linux Desktop, SuSE 9.3. Never had any issue like that running Windows, but I still prefer my penguin. This seems rather arbitrary. Why is 2.0.4 considered more stable than 2.0.6? 2.0.6 is purely minor bugfixes over 2.0.4, so if anything, 2.0.6 should be considered more stable than 2.0.4. To install 2.1.9, you must first uninstall Mozilla and Firefox. For me, however, they would not recompile afterwards (I'll have to try again later and see if it was just a fluke). So the current state of gimp 2.2.x on gentoo seems to depend on the freetype/Mozilla issue. Except there isn't an issue with freetype 2.1.9 and mozilla. Other distros are working happily with this combination. Again, this doesn't make any sense. This didn't really clear anything up. It just looks like a bunch of arbritrary rules not grounded in reality. :) Who knows. Ask the developers. :) Well, I found postings in the forum about how to go about the upgrade and not break stuff (there's a slightly newer version of firefox in portage that doesn't have whatever issue the last one did), So I'm now happily running gimp 2.2.0 (2.2.2 isn't in portage yet). i think we are having some problems because i dont really understand how gentoo works. hehe. Basically, it uses a package tree system (similar to debian I believe). When you tell it to install a package, it downloads the source and specified patches from the gentoo archives and compiles the program. When the maintainers for the specified package in the tree (for instance gimp), deem a package to be properly stable on gentoo, they set it stable. Packages that are not quite deemed stable are masked, but you can easily tell the system to try to install it anyway. This is what I did to go from 2.0.4 to 2.0.6. A package that is in the tree, but not deemed stable enough to even try to install (probably very new or has not been tested yet or depends on something funny) will be hard masked (set to masked in a file). To install these you need to unmask the package in the mask file and then tell it to install. Gimp 2.2.0 is currently hard masked. As I dug around (and tried compiling gimp2 from the stock source), I discovered that gimp 2.2.x require freetype 2.1.7 or greater. If you can get freetype to upgrade and Mozilla/Firefox to recompile afterwards (don't want to lose those obviously), you could then try to install gimp 2.2.x and see what happens. sorry for the lack of understanding of your distribution on my part and if all this work does not lead to getting your tablet working. on the other hand, many people do have their tablets working with that gimp you have and with the current stable gimp, so perhaps the best approach for you right now is to provide more information. Yeah. And I believe several people in gentoo (there are posts about the graphires in the gentoo forums) are using them successfully. [Gimp-user] Graphire3 flakiness in gimp (1.2.5 and 2.0.4)
I just got a new Graphire3 tablet (yay!) and have been trying to get it to work properly in gimp. It works fine in X normally. And works fine in Windows and in Photoshop Elements in Windows. However, in gimp under linux (I haven't tried in gimp for win), it does some odd things. First, after switching to the pen, it will seemingly lock the input device. The pen will only work within the drawing window (except for movement, it will move wherever). When it does this, my normal mouse cannot do anything other than move the cursor around. After much running around with the cursor in and out of the drawing window, the input is eventually released back to the system and I can switch devices (other end of pen - which will end up with same results, or my normal mouse - which will work normally, I don't use the mouse from the tablet.) or use the current end of pen as a normally (until I start drawing with it again anyhow). Second, after drawing with the pen for a short time, gimp starts reading the motion of the pen when not actually on the tablet as tool input. Basically, where I should be able to lift the pen off the tablet and use it at just a cursor to move or whatever, gimp continues to draw with it as if I was using very light pressure until the pen is out of the tablet's reading range (about 1/2 inch). Needless to say, this is rather annoying. I'm using gimp 1.2.5 and 2.0.4 on gentoo with kernel 2.6.10-gentoo-r4, xorg-x11 6.8.0-r3, and linuxwacom 0.6.6 (including the wacom X driver). I would use the path tool to trace the outline of the bottle, then change the path to a selection. Then you can float the selection and put the layer on a different background. Hi! I have just started to use Gimp 2.0.5, under Mandrake Linux 10.0. I have a really serious problem with the text tool. If I do the following: 1. Start Gimp 2. Create a new image 3. Select the text tool 4. Click on the new image 5. Start typing any text Both the image window and Gimp closes without any warning after the first 1 to 3 letters. I've got some script's I'm porting over from 1.2 to 2.0. (I'm using the windows version, if it makes a difference.) There have been some changes, but I've gotten the scripts working again. I had to add an alpha channel to my layers so I could raise/lower them, add gimp-edit-fill after gimp-edit-clear because of the alpha layer. I also had to change how I created my text layers, using gimp-text-fontname instead of gimp-text: (tLayer (car (gimp-text myImage -1 0 0 inText -1 TRUE 110 1 * Myriad Roman bold roman normal * * *))) Changed to: (tLayer (car (gimp-text-fontname myImage -1 0 0 inText -1 TRUE 13 1 Myriad Bold))) Calling it is easier (no foundry or anything to remember), and the text is close, but not close enough. I can actually get it right if I disable Hinting in the text tool options if I manually create the image, but there doesn't appear to be any way to control the hinting via script-fu. Is there some way I can set it to disabled globally so it will be disabled in script-fu too? I have to create a *lot* of these images, so help would be much appreciated! -- Mark R. Ok, turns out, I need to do both hinting and kerning (the letter spacing was off too). So, some searching found that I need to use plug-in-freetype, which takes care of all of this, and produces *perfect* text for me, at least in interactive mode. I seem unable to specify the font_file correctly to be able to call it in non-interactive mode though. The font file name is actually wmb_.pfm. I've tried that, with and without the full path (c:\Windows\fonts\wmb_.pfm), and I've tried the font name by itself (Myriad Bold). I am able to select the font correctly in interactive mode. Title: Installing gimp with libraries in a non-standard place Hi, I am trying to install gimp-1.0.4 and when I run the configure script I get warning saying that the: aa mpeg xpm png jpeg plugins will not be built because it can not find the associated .h files. On my system these files are installed under /opt/sfw/include. Anyone know if there is a way to get configure to look somewhere else beside the standard places. I have tried different flags but have had no luck with --includedir=/opt/sfw or --with-incs-from=/opt/sfw. Thanks in advance, Mark

[Gimp-user] Paste into mask works manually but not in script
I searched the archives for this, but can't find an answer. I have a script which needs to make a layer mask in the shape of some antialiased text. I've tried many different ways, and now have something that works except for one crucial step. The step works if done manually in the GIMP, but not if done via the script. After the successful part of the script runs, I have the following layers: eye icon image preview text layer eye icon image preview mask preview middle layer eye icon image preview background The middle layer is active, and its mask is active. At this point the script has copied the text layer using gimp-edit- copy. If I manually do Edit-Paste in the image window and click the anchor icon in the Layers dialog it does what I want: It copies the antialised text into the middle layer's mask. However, if I try to do the same thing in the script using gimp-edit- paste and gimp-floating-sel-anchor, the text always goes into the middle layer's image (not its mask). It even does this if I do the gimp-edit-paste in the script and the anchor manually. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug? Going back to the desktop wallpaper I created for myself: The wallpaper utilises only two colours, one for the background and one for any graphics/objects on the background, basically a black white background but using two differant colours instead of b w. I would like to take a photographic image and convert the image to only two colours ... with the subject of the photograph (say, a person) in the foreground colour and the rest in the background colour, effectively making a silouette(sp) of the photo's subject. Nope. Maybe I can explain better. I created a desktop wallpaper for myself using the gimp. It is saved as an xcf file for further editing, and as a jpg for actual use. The machine I am doing this on is a Sun box using CDE. I use xv to set the desktop wallpaper. I want to make an addition to the wallpaper I created. Specifically, I want to take a photographic image and incorporate it into the wallpaper. That is easy enough, just add a layer to my xcf file with the photo in it, but it is the particular visual effect I want that has me lost. The effect I want is that of hammered out metal. You may have seen artistic works made of hammered out copper sheeting. That is the effect I want (but using the color of my wallpaper) which visually gives you a hammered out 3 dimensional view of the photograph.
