Re: [Gimp-user] HOWTO: stroke a path with the current tool?
saulgo...@flashingtwelve.brickfilms.com wrote (in part) (on 2009-09-15 at 10:57): Your script would have to manually traverse the paths. I have written a Script-fu which does this for Fuzzy selections; the command is added to the context menu raised by right-clicking on a path in the Paths Dialog. The script can be retrieved from http://flashingtwelve.brickfilms.com/GIMP/Scripts/Temp/sg-fuzzy-select-along-path.scm Saul - interesting script but it seems to take a very long time. Just to see what the difference it would make, I drew an arbitrary path through an image and ran your script against it, copied the selected region and pasted it to a new layer ... then on the same path, using fuzzy select tool (with same parameters) with Shift key down (additive select) clicked manually along the path where by eye I detected changing colors and again copied resulting selection to a new layer ... then set difference mode to compare what had been selected by your script vs what I had selected "manually". two layers were almost identical but "manual" took a fraction of the time. Next tried a complex path (the result of a Fuzzy Select Tool followed by selection to path). This took a **very** long time and eventually stalled - per Process Explorer GIMP was consuming 1.25 GB of memory :-( Suggestion: Would it be possible as you "walk" the path, to compare each pixel to prior and if they are the "same" to within the threshold tolerance skip that pixel and proceed to next? My theory being that if two adjacent pixels on a path are within "threshold tolerance" of each other then fuzzy select on either is the same as fuzzy select on both. -- Regards ... Re: [Gimp-user] How to import Photoshop .pat files?
Followup re Akkana's script: a minor niggle ... I had created this environment variable: GIMP2_DIRECTORY=D:\Data files\gimp-2.x_resourc...@gimp_settings_all_versions Your script is creating the patterns in that location in subfolder + patterns ie. D:\Data files\gimp-2.x_resourc...@gimp_settings_all_versions\patterns but I had not changed Preferences-File folders-Patterns to point explicitly to that location. ie the gimprc file which gets used by GIMP at startup: D:\Data files\gimp-2.x_resourc...@gimp_settings_all_versions\gimprc includes these lines: * (pattern-path "D:\\Data Files\\Gimp-2.x_resources\\patterns;C:\\Documents and Settings\\Alec\\.gimp-2.6\\patterns;D:\\Program Files\\GIMP-2.0\\GIMP2.6.6\\share\\gimp\\2.0\\patterns") * (pattern-path-writable "D:\\Data Files\\Gimp-2.x_resources\\patterns;C:\\Documents and Settings\\Alec\\.gimp-2.6\\patterns") The point is that in your script you concatenate "/patterns" to contents of GIMP2_DIRECTORY with (I think) the line (path (string-append gimp-directory "/patterns/")) but in fact that location does *NOT* automatically get used by GIMP-internals to find location of patterns. Note that in the gimprc extract above (originally created by the installer I guess) it still points to: C:\\Documents and Settings\\Alec\\.gimp-2.6\\patterns which for MOST users who have not set GIMP2_DIRECTORY would be where (path (string-append gimp-directory "/patterns/")) points. I'm not sure whether there is a way for script-fu to get the contents of the gimprc(?) - technically I think it "ought" to offer the user a chance to select in which of the "authorized" writable folders (or possibly in a user specified sub-folder thereof) it will create the patterns. Okay, done. I started with save-anim-layers, but then during the course of simplifying it to deal only with patterns I ended up rewriting pretty much the whole thing. http://shallowsky.com/software/gimp/save-pat-layers.scm works for me on Windows with both 2.6.6 and 2.7 It still registers in Animation, as "Save layers as patterns". Animation isn't the right place for it but it wasn't obvious what would be better. Any thoughts? Maybe both Saul's [Save layers as ...] and your [Save layers as patterns] would be more discoverable on the layers menu? Start with the original multi-layer image and run Animation-> Save layers as patterns, and it will save each of the layers to your GIMP profile patterns directory with the appropriate layer name. I've only tested it on one pattern (the animal one) but it seems to work. It does change the original image -- the layers stay autocropped, I didn't bother to try to revert them since I figure most people will just be closing that image anyway. I'll put it on the registry after I get feedback on whether it's working okay for anyone besides myself. YES I'd especially like to hear whether it works on Windows, since it builds up paths with "/" (which I think script-fu is supposed to translate automatically). Re: [Gimp-user] How to import Photoshop .pat files?
I was following along as did Akana - I found two "Photoshop pattern files" one alleged to contain 162 patterns, the other 109 patterns. Also found this plugin by Googling [use photoshop patterns in gimp]: http://registry.gimp.org/node/10879#comment-872 I needed the windows version noted in the comments: http://registry.gimp.org/node/11003 (by schumaml -October 30, 2008) With the EXE dropped in my plugins folder and after restarting GIMP I can now open the .PAT PS-pattern files by drag and drop from Windows Explorer. They are opened as a multiple layer file (apparently one layer per pattern). I now need to write out all layers as individual GIMP .pat files As an experiment I dragged one of the layers to a new image and did [Image-Autocrop], then [Save as ...] into the Patterns folder (actually a subfolder thereof) as testpattern.pat (it exports, requests flattening and a name) After refreshing Gimp patterns - the saved pattern *IS* available in the Patterns dialog - YIPPEE! To get them created individually it looks like [Filters-Animation-Save Layers] does the trick. If renumbering make sure to include enough ~'s to cover total number of pattern files being written and specify an extension] eg: "/devart_PS_pats_~~~.pat" (If insufficient ~'s in the file-spec an error is generated. This is "script-fu-save-anim-layers" by Saul Goode 3/11/2008 - not sure if it "came-with" GAP or I got it somewhere else? Ok ... this "sort-of" worked :-( I've now got 162 files in my sub-folder of patterns directory (each 2.0 MB) and when I do refresh in pattern dialog all these appear to be loaded. I do get an error showing in the error console: "Failed to load data: Failed to open file 'D:\Data Files\Gimp-2.x_resources\patterns\Photoshop patterns - converted\ademmm.deviantart.com': Permission denied" I'm not sure whether above error really "matters" - I got the same error on my manually created pattern described above ... However ... the patterns created don't seem to be the individual layers - they are all sized 526x1024 and contain multiple images - what you would see if you merged visible with (I think) one fewer layers visible each time. Any suggestions as to how to get the job finished? ie. each layer needs to be cropped I think. Re: [Gimp-user] Masking for Contrast Control - Can this be done in Gimp?
Thanks Saul. (Leaving text below in case this s/b the basis for a bugreport ...) a) I can drag and drop in the Layers dialog - but never see the '+'-sign in the cursor. b) In your video (I stepped through it frame by frame so I'm pretty sure I have this correct) as soon as you grabbed the layer and moved it up to the channels icon to open the channels dialog the '+' sign appeared and (I think(?)] was visible until you dropped it "below the line - below the components section - into the channels section. When I do it (again Windows XP, same in both GIMP 2.6.6 and GIMP 2.7 r28070) the '+' sign never appears while dragging in the image dialog and only appears when dragging in the channels dialog if I position my cursor to the right of where a fairly short channel name would appear - or if none yet, to the right of where it would be. (If description is 10 characters (say) "background copy" the "+" sign appears when cursor is over the 'c' in "copy" or further right - otherwise it is not shown). When '+' displayed drop will be successful otherwise it fails. . When I was first trying to follow your description I didn't have my cursor far enough right and first time I managed to do it had confused myself into thinking it was a matter of how close cursor was to the separator line :-( For improved discoverablity suggest that the '+' sign s/b added to drag-drop anywhere its legal to drop and in particular only be removed in the Channels dialog when cursor is over the components section but reappear when cursor is *anywhere* below the line. I *think* but not sure about this, that '+' sign should appear when cursor is over the "Channels " icon allowing drop there - which should automatically drop it in the same place that a new channel would be created if user keyed Shift+[New] button. can anyone confirm/refute above using Linux/Mac/Windows build? btw: Once I got the above straight your "recipe" worked great on the sample image. saulgo...@flashingtwelve.brickfilms.com wrote: > Quoting Alec Burgess : > >> Saul: >> You said >>> 1. Also, don't forget to reinstall GIMP after installing Python, because the GIMP Python components aren't installed unless Python is present on the system. This is a related GIMP 2.6.6 Python problem ... (using WinXP SP3) I had GIMP 2.6.6 installed and working with Python 2.5. I ran into a problem with a Python script by Chris Mohler posted here a couple of days ago. Count tiles for a mosaic - http://registry.gimp.org/node/15080 the command pdb.gimp_message() eg. pdb.gimp_message(u"foo") shows its output in either the separate GIMP-output window if GIMP started with parameter -c or the internal Error console instead of in the expected dialog box. At Chris' suggestion I checked version of Python I had. Mine was Python 2.5 and checking http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/faq.html#py found that GIMP 2.6 is now available as are new versions of the three sub-packages PyCairo <http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/binaries/win32/pycairo/1.4/>, PyGObject <http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/binaries/win32/pygobject/2.14/> and PyGTK <http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/binaries/win32/pygtk/2.12/>. These three have new versions for Python 2.6 released Jan 12, 2009 So I installed Python 2.6.6, then the three sub-packages. At first Gimp python-console was working as before (though pdb.gimp_message() continued not to display the expected dialog box). Then I noticed / remembered that GIMP has to be reinstalled after installing the Python "stuff" so I did that. Now I'm getting error message in Error Console as soon as I try to open python console Filters - Python-Fu - console: === GIMP Error Plug-in crashed: "python-console.py" (D:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\GIMP2.6.4\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\python-console.py) The dying plug-in may have messed up GIMP's internal state. You may want to save your images and restart GIMP to be on the safe side. Note I tested with previously installed GIMP 2.6.5 & 2.7.0 - Python-Fu still works with them (presumably still using Python 2.5) install. Note: in an attempt to correct this, I reinstalled GIMP 2.6.6 again but unchecked the python support option. It warned that python files would not be removed, requested reboot and after reboot GIMP 2.6.6 still shows Filters - Python-Fu entry. Selecting it gives error in console above. Re-installing GIMP 2.6.6 and turning Python option on again does not request reboot and attempt to run Python-Fu console still gives above error. I've already rotated and cropped all the images, using ImageMagick and the bash shell scripting language. Is there any way of batch coverting all the PNM files to XFC files without opening each one of them and saving it to an XCF file? ImageMagick's 'convert' tool doesn't recognize XCF image files. In Gimp 2.6.1 (in Windows - I assume its the same in Linux) just open an image of the same size as your PNM files. In your Explorer equivalent in Linux select all 62 images, drag them as a group to the toolbox with the Layers dialog shown and drop. Result should be 63 layers (lowest the background) and above that the 62 PNM images named to match. Delete the lowest one. So in the next release, there should at least be some sort of error message that will hopefully be useful when it comes to locating the root of the problem. Thanks for the clarification. So help DOES work for some or most Windows users? I had missed that part - along with everything else I misunderstood :-[ -- Regards ... I have downloaded the Windows installer and it runs OK but no help/F1 despite getting the gimp-help2-2-4.0-eng-setup.exe and running it, so can someone point out the errors of my way!! as I must be missing a vital simple step:-(( Hi Peter My layman's understanding was that when the Gimp 2.6 was built for Windows some version of something was out of sync with something else. Problem was located and fixed in CVS shortly after but unless/until a new Windows version is built and released, unless you know how to roll-your-own you (and all other Windows users ) are SOL. Usually Goggling [gimp doc whatever_term_you_wanted] turns up as first hit. -- Regards ...
