In the past some of that has been done at GIMP developer meetups, in
person. We've also had occasional jit.si video meetings but nothing
specific about planning recently as far as i know.

And yes, we need more people on the team who know about colour
management at a fairly deep level. But yes, we also need to get GIMP 3
out, and a lot of changes will have to wait until then.

Thank you, Elle, for what you have done so far!

GIMP is being very actively developed. It's just that there are not
_many_ developers, so larger changes and more complex changes tend to
take a lot longer.

Yes GIMP is being actively developed. Yes GIMP needs more developers.
The current main goal is getting GIMP converted to GTK3. Supposedly at
some point in the future fixing color management will be a priority.

I'm not sure what a good way to respond to feature requests that users
need/want actually is. I think maybe Krita devs have a handle on the
problem but I don't know for sure. The problem is that everyone has "an
interest" that they think should be "the most important feature".

I'm not sure that currently there is enough teamwork and planning for
GIMP as a whole, with respect to needs of users. I think there might be
a bit too much "What developer A wants and what developer B wants".

Personally I've run out of time and interest to devote to GIMP color
management. It's a lot closer to being truly useful than it used to be.
It's still got a long way to go.

I'm hoping some new developers/contributors to GIMP show up who have a
good knowledge of color management/color science plus the time, energy,
and patience that I used to have. Even if you can't write code, if you
have the ability to compile GIMP from source and test new code carefully
and systematically, and report problems with color management, that is a
good contribution, a necessary contribution.

I guess there are some people who'd say new features get a bit too much

Of course you didn't do anything wrong. It's an excellent tag to let

It would be great if you could find the time to go through the links I

[Gimp-user] GIMP-2.10 and GIMP2.99 are still sRGB-only image editors

2021-02-04 Thread Elle Stone

A misconception I keep seeing on various forums needs to be corrected:

GIMP-2.10 does *NOT* produce correct editing results in color spaces
other than sRGB. Neither does GIMP-2.99.

Editing in AdobeRGB, ProPhotoRGB, Rec2020, etc WILL produce *wrong*
results for many operations, and unless you are thoroughly conversant
with the underlying code, or else have a way to compare results with a
properly color-managed editing application, you don't have any way to
know what's right and what's wrong. It's best to stick with editing only
in GIMP's built-in sRGB color spaces.

The same is true if you are using GIMP-2.99: Some things that don't work
in GIMP-2.10, do work in GIMP-2.99. Other things that actually do work
in GIMP-2.10, don't work in GIMP-2.99.

About two years ago major changes were made in babl and additional
changes were made in GIMP-2.99, messing up stuff that still works in
GIMP-2.10. For awhile progress was being made in GIMP-2.99 on extending
the arena of "what actually works", some of which progress is from bug
reports I filed and in some cases helped to fix - it seems nobody else
was testing the new code to see what actually did work.

I was able to write code that fixed some of the bugs I reported for
GIMP-2.99 color management. But once I reached the point where further
coding requirements exceeded my coding ability, progress simply stopped,
with everyone else saying "some day" proper color management for GIMP
would be a priority. I began to feel like the best way to make sure a
bug would never get fixed, was to have the dreaded "Concepts: Color
Science" tag attached to it.

Since autumm of 2013 I've been participating in GIMP development, mostly
in the area of color management (editing in color spaces other than
sRGB) and color science (making sure GIMP code produces correct results
for things like layer blend modes, Curves and Levels, AutoStretch,
Luminance, and so on; and adding code for things like LCh color pickers
and blend modes).

Participating in GIMP development used to be challenging and enjoyable.
But over the last couple of years my interest in and patience with the
slow pace of progress regarding GIMP color management have dwindled to
the point of disappearing altogether.

If someone else feels like helping with GIMP color management and color
science, here's a list of still-open bug reports that I reported after
the migration to gitlab, most of which have to do with color
management/color science:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues?scope=all&utf8=%E2%9C%93&state=opened&author_username=ellestone

Here are bugs that I opened before the migration to gitlab:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues?scope=all&utf8=%E2%9C%93&state=opened&author_username=bugzilla-migration&search=ellestone

The most important color management bugs still open from before the
migration to gitlab are these:

* Replace hard-coded sRGB parameters to allow editing in other RGB
working spaces (opened 6 years ago):
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/594 - in some ways this bug
is obsolete as current GIMP color management issues are less about
actual hard-coded values and more about a lack of any way to convey the
required "not sRGB" color space information to various sections of code
that need this information.

* Decomposed to LAB images have the wrong ICC profile assigned (opened 4
years ago): https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/883

* Address various limitations of LCMS soft proofing (opened 4 years
ago): https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/976

the
and hoping very much that GIMP will find new developers that them a lot
of energy and some interest and expertise in color management and color
science.
* Support for high bit depth RGB (and LCH?) color palettes for painting
(opened 2 years ago): https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/1328

Similar searchs in https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gegl/ and
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/babl/ will turn up a few additional color
management issues.

Best of luck to all,
Elle Stone

When you do Save As in 2.10, you'll see the bottom of the dialogue
gives you the chance to save with "slower but better compression", and
if you hover there you get a list of 2.10 features you are using that
prevent 2.8 from interpreting the file.

The least obvious is probably layer modes - you will need to switch
each layer back to the legacy layer modes by clicking on the icon just
to the right of the layer mode drop down.

The most obvious is probably that 2.8 is limited to 8-bit per channel
encoding (precision).

So if you go through and remove new features you can save for 2.8, but
of course this may affect the appearance of the image.

Okay, so I grabbed the file and opened it in FontForge. I'm guessing

They all have '-1' Unicode value. This is so messed up. Basically you
have two options:

1. Find software that would access glyphs that don't belong to any
Unicode block. I think the only one that did that was Fontmatrix, and
it's not in the Ubuntu repository anymore. Maybe in some PPAs.

2. Use FontForge to map the glyphs that you need to real Unicode
characters inside known blocks. As a quick hackaround, you could use
smth like Latin Extended A or Latin Extended B:
https://unicode-table.com/en/blocks/latin-extended-b/.

For that, if my understanding is correct:

1. Use 'Encoding > Compact' to see everything in one window
2. Click to select a glyph you want to remap
3. Use 'Element > Glyph Info..."
4. Set new value using reference in the link above, press OK

When you are done, uncheck 'Compact' encoding option, export the font
file, install it instead of the one you already installed.

In fact, there's option 3: annoy the type designer just enough to get
this fixed :)

Alex

Just a user here, but I assume GIMP only accesses the Unicode CMAP for a
ttf/otf font.  For freeware Font Forge is probably your best bet to get
at the full glyph index.  There's some better payware for Win or Mac, no
idea about Linux distros.

Oh, I'll be damned, you are completely right, and I messed up. They
are referenced via the aalt table. Yes, not much we can do in GIMP

[Gimp-user] Gimp 2.10 and Streetwear font (glyphs)

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your test !

I have installed Fontforge, loaded the font, mapped some glyphs (yes those at
the bottom) with Latin Extended B using "Glyph info", generate the fonts
(Truetype .ttf), but no help. If I use shift+ctrl+u, I still see the Latin
Extended B characters ...

Did you manage to do it on your side ?

Thanks !

GIMP does not have a glyphs palette i’m afraid, and also it can only
use glyphs that are mapped to characters. The Streetware font has
access to the glphs at the end via the OpenType alternate glyphs
mechanism, but GIMP doesn't support OpenType features and alternates.

Okay, so I grabbed the file and opened it in FontForge. I'm guessing

They all have '-1' Unicode value. This is so messed up. Basically you

Hello,

Any half-decent font manager, including free ones, will give you the
possibility to open the full map of characters, pick the one you need,

Thanks Rich. I used the PPA under Ubuntu 16.04 but after upgrading to 18.04 I
had huge problems with libgimp2.0 and 3.0 dependencies, with GIMP and Xsane

straight away. If new requirements force a change I'll report back. I'll
document the ImageScan workaround in a couple of days.

The snap will be the problem. I went the other way, used to use a flatpak and
had to side-load lots of lib files into the flatpak folders just to get a few
plugins working. Never managed to get xsane working. Used a regular Gimp 2.8 for
scanning.

Now using kubuntu 18.04 and Gimp 2.10.x from the PPA The installation is much
less fraught than before. I put some notes here:

[Gimp-user] Gimp 2.10 scanner integration under Linux

2019-07-18 Thread grepnil
Hi all. Has anyone succeeded in scanning from Gimp 2.10 under Linux? In older
versions the File/Create or earlier File/Acquire options would give options to
run Xsane or ImageScan! for Linux. I've copied the executables to the plug-ins
directory without any effect.

I know Windows users may be able to use TWAIN drivers but that was the way it
used to be done under Linux in earlier versions, and still works with compatible
plugin executables.

I'm using Gimp 2.10.12 under Ubuntu 18.04, from the snap install in Ubuntu
Software. I used to use the PPA install but I had huge problems with
dependencies when I tried that for 2.10. The problem might not be the PPA
itself but I'm very chary of trying it again now I've got a few things working.

If nobody has got scanner integration working for Linux I have a workaround for
ImageScan! that I can post, but would like to know if there's a direct solution
first.

Disregard the last 2 paragraphs above as I found that these were due to an
incorrect setting and bugs probably unrelated to the error message. But while
I'm on that subject, some text in existing XCFs don't seem to want to be
reformatted; font, etc keeps reverting. As a workaround new text needs to be

[Gimp-user] GIMP 2.10 / WACOM Issues?

2019-05-18 Thread 2ward2
Sadly, I found that the Wacom app doesn't always know that your tablet has the
latest driver. I had relied on that for many problems, including loss of
pressure sensitivity. When I went to the Wacom website, I downloaded the latest
driver for Windows 10, which fixed most of my problems. Now, I just have to
solve Gimp's not recognizing the eraser tip. It works with other apps, however,
making me think it's an incompatibility between Gimp 2.10.10 and the Wacom
driver that isn't common to other apps. My opinion is that since the function
works those "non-Gimp" apps, it's more likely to be a Gimp problem than Wacom's.

My workaround is to use the pen tip for every tool just by selecting them from
the toolbox.

Hope this helps!

lost the possibility to open raw files. I get the message proposing to
install either Darktable or Rawtherapee. But I have installed and working
Darktable in my system. Looks like v2.10 just cannot detect it. Also I
cannot setup particular raw processing program in preferences.

I use Gentoo (stable branch), GIMP 2.10.8 and Darktable 2.6.1.

Does anybody have a clue what's happening? Thanks in advance.

They don't have yet manual for Gimp 2.10 that you can install on your
computer. They have other versions.

[Gimp-user] GIMP 2.10 Manual

2019-04-23 Thread Jo Van Rafelghem via gimp-user-list
Hello

Can someone point me to a download link for both the GIMP 2.10 manual and the
help package for the application.
My version instellend without the contextual help and pressing F1 keeps
pointing me to the online manual.

I suppose this question has been asked several times but I cannot seem to find
an answer readily.

[Gimp-user] GIMP 2.10 embedded color profiles

2019-01-26 Thread docrob
This issue refers to GIMP 2.10.8 and Darktable 2.4.4, running in Linux (KDE).

When using GIMP's Darktable plugin, I think I am right in saying that that
closing Darktable always imports the image into GIMP in the form of a
floating point EXR file with profile linear Rec709 RGB. This is logical
since it is desirable to work with floating point precision in GIMP 2.10.

In most cases the desired final output from GIMP is a JPEG with sRGB profile
but I can find no settings which give me confidence that this is working
properly. In my case my starting point is Nikon NEF files. The Colorspace
information for the image that Darktable exports shows up in Image ->
Metadata -> View Metadata as:
Exif.Nikon3.ColorSpacesRGB
Exif.Photo.ColorSpace Uncalibrated

I have been advised that some images that I sent out as JPEG files did not
contain an embedded profile, although GIMP's Image Properties insist that
they have the GIMP built-in sRGB. To add to the doubt, the Gwenview image
viewer, while it shows the full-sized image correctly, displays the
thumbnails much too dark.

I have found the only way to show the thumbnail correctly in Gwenview is to
reload the JPEG into GIMP, ensuring that the option to promote imported
images to floating point precision is unchecked, specifically assign the
GIMP built-in sRGB profile, then re-export as a JPEG. Curiously, this does
not change either of the two ColorSpace tags above.

This is obviously unsatisfactory in itself, but owing to the
Exif.Photo.ColorSpace tag remaining as Uncalibrated, I cannot be sure the
image has the sRGB profile embedded. By contrast, if I load a JPEG file from
the camera into GIMP, both tags are set to sRGB and there is no problem with
thumbnails.

I would be grateful if someone could confirm whether the above behaviour is
expected and if so, what would be a suitable work-around.

Rob

[Gimp-user] Gimp 2.10 Tool Options

2019-01-26 Thread Carusoswi
So, I click on the quick mask tool (or whatever you call it), and then I open
the Brushes "pane", select a brush, but cannot size it unless I then open the
tool options "pane". That actually worked once. Now I get nothing when I click
Tool Options at the top of the "pane" which offes "Layers Naviation" tag, "Tool
Options" tab, "Gradients" Tab, and "Brushes" tab.

If I click the "Brushes" tab, the familiar "pane" showing various brush options
appears, so I must be on the right track.

I cannot do any selecting with the quick mask until I can at least resize my
brush.

I am certain it is something simple that I am missing.

Please help.

Thanks.

Thanks so much for solving my problem:) The answer was there under my nose all
the time but I didn't register its importance until I read your reply. In both
"straightening using the measure tool" and "straightening by corrective
rotation", then using clipping with the "crop to result " option gives a
result in which "Image: crop to content" gives what I want.

[Gimp-user] Gimp 2.10 autocrop equivalent

2018-12-12 Thread mgwong
Dear Helpers

I have recently updated to Gimp 2.10 (under Ubuntu 18.04). I use Gimp
extensively for processing photos. One very common problem is having the photo
tilted by a few degrees. It is easy to straighten it using the rotate tool or
the new way via the measurement tool. In Gimp 2.8 it used to be very easy to
crop off any excess using the autocrop tool. However nothing I have tried works
that way in Gimp 2.10.

I created a small image to demonstrate what happens. On the left is my "photo"
a bit out of whack;). IN the middle is a screen shot of the image after
rotation. The third is what I would like, which autocrop under Gimp 2.8 would
create. In GImp 2.10, if I "crop to content" (under Image menu item) then I
get an error message saying "cannot crop because the image is already cropped to
content". Using "crop to selection" then the grey border inside the yellow
dotted lines disappears which is what one would expect. I would like the crop
to be such that it crops off the outer section plus all the transparent
sections.

I have searched for an answer but could not get the results as described in
http://www.gimpusers.com/forums/gimp-user/20922-crop-to-selection-not-working

Any help would be much appreciated:)

Thanks

Margaret

It is the alpha channel which interferes.

1. Using the Gimp 2.10 measure tool for straightening, recommend set "Clipping"
to clip.

2. Apply that and then consider the background colour. If it is white as your
example the skip the next. Photographs often have an off-white value .

3. If needed, colour-pick the background color and then Layer -> Transparency ->
Remove alpha channel. That should give a solid uniform background.

4. Apply zealous crop or crop to content.

A better way for the background colour might be using the
resynthesizer/heal-transparency plugins. (***don't use*** the registry-plugin
deb package for this, grab them separately) then remove alpha.

Apologies, as usual not paying enough attention to what you want as an outcome.

You could try this plugin StraightCrop. Comes from the now defunct
gimp-plugin-registry site. Tried in Kubuntu 16.04 Gimp 2.10.8 flatpak so should
work on your 18.04 installation.

The plugin attached, unzip and put in your Gimp user profile
~/.config/GIMP/2.10/plug-ins

The permissions should already be set but check for executable anyway.

In action, make a straight path then menu Image -> Transform -> Straighten &
Crop

[Gimp-user] GIMP 2.10 / WACOM Issues?

2018-11-29 Thread HobbyArtist
Hey, with 2.10.8 up, I had a lot of issues. I made sure I had the latest driver
from Huion; didn't work. I tried uninstalling and re-installling 2.10.8. Nada.
I switched back to 2.8. It was abysmal, and wouldn't work for me.

I fixed my issue by going into the update mainframe on gimp, and downloading
2.10.6, It still has occasional issues with closing suddenly, but they had a
pattern, instead of randomly happening. 2.10.6 would only suddenly close if
there was too much taxing your system, and if it had been up for more than 3
hours. But, and with my h420 tablet button set to press and save, I can
anticipate this and save at the drop of a hat.

This worked for my issues with 2.10.8 when nothing else would. I hope that this
at least provides you with ideas on finding your fix!

Cheers!

[Gimp-user] GIMP 2.10 / WACOM Issues?

2018-11-05 Thread bunnyninjaface
I don't know if you've gotten an answer to the issue with the pen and the cursor
not lining up, but I made this account so I can give you my solution.
What worked for me was turning off the "force proportions" button in the tablet
settings, and instead manually trying to match up the active area with the
screen. It's a bit annoying, and if you ever have to change the active area you
have to match it up again, but it works. My active area is set to 4046 x 7337,
and that is the perfect ratio for me, but your screen might be a different size
or aspect ratio.

You seem to want to drag me into this.

Reread the bug report, and you will realize that you got some comments
wrong.

I kept the report open back then because that fact that I couldn't
reproduce it in 2.9.22 does not necessarily mean that the original
reporter (with 2.8.18) would see the same. Unfortunately they never
wrote any further comments.

The messages you interpreted as issue 1007 being closed were your issue
being closed as a duplicate.

Looks like it was reported a year ago. The anti-aliasing toggle does work for
me in Gimp 2.8.22 (kubuntu 16.04)

but not Gimp 2.10.4 (kubuntu 16.04 flatpak)

I think I will update that bug report.

Hi,

I use a Wacom Cintiq and  from time to time the same problem has

I think it's not a GIMP's problem: After calibrating my Wacom everything
was fine. Hope this will work!

What can I do to make GIMP recognize the correct position of the

Re: [Gimp-user] GIMP 2.10 / WACOM Issues?

2018-07-17 Thread Richard via gimp-user-list
Sadly GIMP (and/or GTK+) isn't entirely predictable when it comes to tablet
problems

I've never had problems with Wacom tablets on my GIMP installation (aside from
the occasional failure to detect the tablet at all), unfortunately I'm not
quite sure I understand the description. Nonetheless, here's a few quick
things to check / rule out:

- Screen/window mode. It should definitely be set to "Screen", so this doesn't
seem to be the cause

- Pen/mouse mode. If, for example, you pick up the pen from point A and put it
down on point B but the cursor doesn't immediately snap to the new location,
then you've got the stylus set on mouse (relative movement) mode. Check your
Wacom tablet control panel to be sure it's on Pen (absolute movement) mode.

[Gimp-user] GIMP 2.10 Toggle between image window and toolbox

2018-07-07 Thread programmer_ceds
In V2.8.xx it was possible (on Windows at any rate) to toggle between the image
window and the toolbox by simply pressing the Tab key. This made using
multi-window views easier when using a single monitor.

In V2.10 with the image window displayed (the toolbox hidden behind it) pressing
Tab just causes the Toolbox button to appear or disappear in the taskbar. If the
toolbox is in front of the image window pressing Tab simply steps through the
options/fields in the toolbox.

Is there any way that I am missing to get similar behaviour to V2.8 ?

Re: [Gimp-user] Gimp 2.10: bush default size

2018-06-21 Thread Richard via gimp-user-list
Personally, I'd think the idea behind the "Link" buttons is that any changes
you make to the brush settings in the Tool Options will be reflected in the
brush file (as if you'd made those changes in the Brush Editor) and, thus, when
you pick that brush again it will have the same settings you left it at the
last time.

HOWEVER, this does not seem to be the case at all (nor is it helped by the
built-in brushes being read-only) so essentially, the "Link" button is just an
"auto-revert" function, which I cannot see any practical use for currently and
have to wonder why someone thought it should be enabled by default.
(anyone...?)

Just turn it OFF.

Sorry, misread your question as the brush size varying between tools.

I don't know whether this is a deliberate decision or an unwanted side-effect of
the changes to the brushes - either way I can see what a pain it would be to
those who use a number of brushes (it even resets the size when going back to a
brush for which you have set the size!)

You could try reporting it as a bug - then we would find out if it was a
deliberate change.

In the meantime I have a couple of suggestions.

Firstly the third post in the following thread describes how to set GIMP so that
you can adjust the brush size using the mouse wheel.

http://www.gimpusers.com/forums/gimp-user/17876-changing-the-brush-sizes

Secondly it should be a simple exercise to write a script that would take as a
parameter the brush size that you want to use. Running the script should set the
brush size (using (gimp-context-set-brush-size size)). When you change brushes
you would then simply have to re-run the script - use "Filters/Repeat Last"
short-cut Ctrl-F (or you could change this short-cut to a single key press if
you want). This would probably be the best approach short of getting the problem
fixed. If you have problems writing a script let me know and I will see what I
can do.

[Gimp-user] Gimp 2.10: bush default size

2018-06-20 Thread programmer_ceds
I have just written a script to set the brush size.

Put the script in your personal scripts folder.

The first time it is run (each GIMP session) it offers 15 as the default brush
size - if you want a different default size just edit the 15 in line 40 to the
value of your choice.

The script should appear in "Filters/Set Brush Size/Set Brush Size"

As I said above pressing Ctrl-F will simply repeat the script and set a new
brush to the size last set by the script. Changing Ctrl-F to a single keypress
would speed things. (this does assume that you aren't running other scripts in
the mean time. If you are you could assign a short-cut to the Set Brush Size
script - use the short cut, press Enter and you will have the last brush size
that you set.

To set a different brush size for the script simply re-run it.

Hope this helps

never the size I want.

Can I do either of the following:

-Barring that, change the default brush size. This must be for ALL brushes--I

I need to do one of these or else I'll have to revert back to 2.8. I don't have

It's a feature that I find very useful when I am using Photoshop, although, to
be truthful, I rarely use PS these days. I maintain my subscription, and I dug
in to actually learn how to use LR (which raised my tolerance to actually give
DT an honest try), but the open source aspect of GIMP, and now, darktable
(which, for me is far superior to LR in actually manipulating images) has always
appealed to me. Additionally, Linux has always seemed to just run with less
fuss than Windows.

Back to that cloning feature, it's very useful, but, otherwise, I find the GIMP
implementation of cloning to be the cat's meow. Perspective cloning, IMO, is
just so intuitive and useful, straight forward and easy to use. I love it.

OK, I shall descend from my soapbox, now.

It probably would be a good idea to be a little more specific
which version of GIMP you (pl) have, and for which operating
system. Also, probably, what you did to get to the point at which
you are having the problem.

For instance, I have GIMP 2.10.2, with which I just tested this
issue on Lubuntu Next 17.10. The version I have was obtained from
the PPA @ http://ppa.launchpad.net/otto-kesselgulasch/gimp/ubuntu/
which was added to the Ubuntu repositories.
The specific package version for my system was:
2.10.2+omg-0ubu17.10.1~ppa

For ME, the "Line Style" sub-dialog shows up just fine, whether
I click on the "+" or press Alt-L (as M_ Lork described).
[I had previously opened up a .jpg, did a rectangle-select, did a
Select->To Path, right-clicked on the path and opened the Stroke Path
dialog.]

Hi,

had to switch back to version 2.8 because in 2.10, I can't open "Line style" in
the Stroke Path dialog. With "Stroke line" selected, neither clicking on the
plus sign nor pressing Alt-L will show any reaction.

Anyone else experiencing the same issue?

Now there's an idea - an option so once the clone source is set, instead of /
in addition to the normal brush outline it shows a translucent preview of the
source region (masked by the brush shape).

Alright, I hit reset for all parameters in this dialog, and that seems to have
done the trick. I have always thought Gimp's implementation of the cloning tool
(especially its perspective cloning) was better than anything else out there.
Working in 2.10 this evening reinforces my opinion. The only thing that I would
wish for is PS's anticipatory view such that, when trying to align during
cloning (say a row of barbed wire), you see where your destination pixels will
fall before you commit to the clone. Absent that very nice feature, I would
wish for a way to undo a destination click such that the source remains in place
so that you could click several times by trial and error to fine tune position
of the source pixels.

This is an issue with which my concerns are mild. The clone tool as is does a
wonderful job.

Ubuntu must have pushed 2.10 out to me in an upgrade, as I had been running a
2.9x version.

It was a pleasant surprise to open Gimp and find 2.10 installed. Seems to run
nicely on my Ubuntu 18.04 setup.

Thanks and congrats to the developers.

[Gimp-user] GIMP 2.10 TIFF EXIF metadata stripped on Windows 10

2018-05-27 Thread MartinFa
Ok, fixed, but don't know what was causing the problem.

The metadata was being correctly imported & exported in tiff files on my Win 10
laptop running Gimp 2.10.0. On my Win 10 PC - also running Gimp 2.10.0 - the
metadata was getting stripped when loading a tiff file into Gimp.

I just uninstalled Gimp 2.10.0 & installed Gimp 2.10.2 on my PC and problem no
longer exists.

[Gimp-user] GIMP 2.10 for Mac

2018-05-22 Thread user07
[User Manual]
Hope I won't go OT (or, at least, not too much...)

Anyway, I'm on OsX and I'm using Partha's Gimp version (which run great :) !)

I was just wondering if anything is doable about an up-to-date version of the
User Manual...

So far, the only way I was/am able to have offline help while using Gimp was:
- to create a 'help' folder [share → gimp → 2.0]
- to copy in it a folder (downloaded can't_even_remember_where o.O ) containing
.html copies of the whole 2.8 GIMP User Manual ( https://docs.gimp.org/2.8/it/ )

Actually I've copied these files and I'm still using them, but I see an updated
version of the Manual is out ( https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/it/ )... so, is there
any known way to use it offline?

Thanks for help!

[Gimp-user] GIMP 2.10 TIFF EXIF metadata stripped on Windows 10

I'm away from home right now, since last night, & using GIMP 2.10 on my laptop -
Win 10, once again. I can't reproduce the problem on this machine. I thought it

[Gimp-user] GIMP 2.10 TIFF EXIF metadata stripped on Windows 10

2018-05-18 Thread MartinFa
Thanks for the reply.

I start off with .tif files which have EXIF (and other) metadata within them -
as added by my photo scanner, photo library software (Synology's Photo Station)
and/or from ExifTool - Original & create dates; User note; copyright, GPS,
various tags. These are all present and displayed in ExifToolGUI. As soon as I
open the .tif file in GIMP 2.10 and go... Image -> Metadata -> View Metadata,
nothing is shown. When I then export the modified image as a .tif and check it
with ExifToolGUI, all the metadata has been stripped out.

If I try this starting with a similar .jpg file, the metadata is displayed
correctly in GIMP. Exporting an orginal .jpg as a .jpg preserves the EXIF
metadata correctly, as does exporting it as a TIFF.

I do have the settings to export all the metadata types in Edit -> Preferences
-> Image Import & Export, but it looks to me like the metadata is being stripped
out on opening the TIFF file in GIMP and not during the export.

However - taking this a step further - If I start with a ,jpg that contains
metadata; open it in GIMP; export it as a .tif, close & re-start GIMP (not sure
if this bit is relevant); open the .tif file I just created from the original
.jpg, then the metadata is preserved.

I'm wondering of there's some strange formatting of my original .tif files that
GIMP is struggling with?

[Gimp-user] Gimp 2.10 very slow

2018-05-17 Thread wireless112
Thank You Michael for the link to the bug report. I went and downloaded
Partha's portable 2.10 and it performed as expected for a portable app.

I will try the install version some other time. But for now, my non expert
opinion seems to concur that not all windows builds are impacted. Partha seemed
to confirm that the core Gimp is the same as the official build, just the
compiler is configured differently.

[Gimp-user] Gimp 2.10 very slow

2018-05-17 Thread wireless112
I should add no one here claimed to be experts, no one claimed to have wasted
money, the car references were simply a different way to explain the performance
gap. The lambo being the fastest current production car and the pinto being one
of the slowest.

A gimp expert would dig in and fix it. A photography expert would use a paid
alternative.

an open source product can not be great without bug reports and forums like
this.

Like others in this thread, I did start with a clean slate. My current build had
never had GiMP installed on it. However wasn't a total fresh win install. So I
may try to clean things up better, but to be honest, the installer program
should be doing that cleaning.in a perfect world. Without feedback open
source gets no where near perfect.

I am not trying to start a flame war, just trying to understand that severely
off base comment. Chocking it up to sarcasm for the moment. Comparing someone
to edsel implies the someone is a business, yeah not so much. Just someone who
used gimp to make some images for a pet project.

As someone who values all of my time, that paid alternative would have been less
expensive. Just saying. There is no such thing as free. Everything has an
expense. This is not a complaint, it''s a fact I chose to go the "Free" route, I
then chose to upgrade to an untested (by me) product for a project I wasn't
quite done with yet. I then chose to make my experience known so that those who
are experts at gimp can have a look and see what's going on, and if I am lucky
can fix it. Most importantly of all, someone who hasn't upgraded yet may read
this thread learning to go about the process differently than I did and as a
result have a much better experience. Lord knows forums have saved me numerous
times.

While I am at it, I should clarify, I don't have a load time issue with 2.10, I
have an everything else is slow issue. It frequently stops responding for the
most mundane of tasks, well nearly every operation. Merely out of curiosity,
when I am done with this project I will attempt a deep clean and see what
happens. It does sound like a registry reference to a deleted file didn't get
cleaned up during the install process.

The corresponding bug report is:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=795880

Different compiler flags are likely the reason for speed differences
encountered in different builds, and figuring out those which provide
fast, yet still accurate results is the constructive way to go forward.

We are not here to discuss how much we spent for gimp.
This forum is to discuss bugs and other issues we are facing and to share
opinions and maybe ways (if someone found) to improve gimp. If noone ever
discuss the issues / bugs cause the gimp is free, then the developers wouldnt be
able to improve it.
If you think that we cant say our problems cause gimo is free, i am sorry my
friend but this forum is not for you.
