Re: Max Wi-Fi connections question

I spent some time in Cambridge on Broadway street working for Sonos wireless
speaker company. I enjoyed running 'Kismet' watching the most interesting wifi
scans. Two dozen businesses, public transportation buses passing by in and out
of
range. The classroom environment you describe should present no problems.

Kismet also provides some interesting (sci fi) audio sounds while it scans,
raising your geek creds.

Then go into your router settings and change 802.11bgn to 802.11bg save and let

mnolin-ws520:/etc/modprobe.d # cat rtl8192ce.conf

Used to think Lenovo was pretty good stuff still struggling with Optimus Nvidia

I was lucky the Realtek Wifi produced some quick google hits.

bug here, cache or memory related... the debug continues.  perhaps some log files have left clues.

There are a lot of processes that are kicked off during start up and it

takes an abnormal amount of resources. After you are up and running

these resources are freed up as the start-up processes die.

The resource that comes to mind is virtual memory "swap" space, and it

may be that you need to expand that, particularly on machines with

smaller amounts of main memory.

  Lots of lessons learned.

I ended up pulling out a SATA USB 3.5 hard drive enclosure, booting Knoppix
6.01. Several 'fdisk -l' and 'dd if=/dev/baddisk of=/dev/gooddisk' I was able
to copy partition information, a working boot sector, and the HP recovery
partition. The first whole disk copy was not successful as it stopped on the
bad OS sector, a second attempt to copy the 2nd largest recovery sector worked.
I was able to run the recovery program which was essentially an entire
reinstall of the OS. Rebooting windows after configuration confirmed a
correctly installed and booting OS.

I must have spent at least 6 hours on the phone and rebuilding hard drives. My
recovery CD should be here in 2 more days. I was lucky to have Knoppix Hacks,
knoppix CD USB hard drive enclosure. ready to go, and previous experience
upgrading dual-boot laptops. I couldn't recommend HP to anyone, outside of this
group who had time to burn rebuilding a laptop.

My user experience is still being enhanced on the phone with HP techcenter. New
replacement hard drive arrived, installed passed hard drive diagnostics. 'No
operating system installed' apparently no HP recovery partition either. I'm
sure Knoppix would confirm I received a perfectly working but blank hard drive.
The return center passed me back to the techcenter which is processing a
recovery CD order which of course I had already asked for along with the
replacement hard drive.

Just asked, "you did not create a recovery CD"... not possible from a hard
drive that failed diagnostics.

New order #, for a recovery CD, free of charge and under warranty and all,
guess I'll need to call back for that RMA# I had originally called for.

reviewing (for the 4th time) hp.com/go/techcenter/startup and additional
frantic F9 F10 pressing I was able to get to the BIOS configuration and change
the boot order, to CD/DVD driver first and bad hard drive 2nd. The previous

F10 quickly and frequently.

New HP dv6 laptop and Knoppix

2009-12-13 Thread Michael Nolin

The laptop I bought the kids for Christmas arrived and it did not boot windoz
7. After an hour and a half on the phone with HP tech support I got a case# and
an order number for a new hard drive due to arrive on the 17. HP's diagnostics
test 'hard drive:failed'.

The BIOS on this laptop seems pretty weak: F2 'run system diagnostics' RETURN
run windows normally. I had to remove the hard drive from the laptop to get the
knoppix CD to run, I tried 5.0, 5.1 and finally 6.01 which worked.

Perhaps I can upgrade the BIOS when I get a working hard drive? can I find a
similar discussion in the archives? I checked last months but cannot remember
any particular discussion.

I did not originally intend to dual boot this laptop but now I fear this weak
BIOS (if it is actually the BIOS I'm looking at) will lead to certain data loss
or removing the hard drive to recover any data which will have to be done on
another machine.

I have another HP dv5 I ordered from newegg, I'm quited happy with the way it
has been preforming since May running openSUSE
mno...@linux-lap:/etc/sysconfig/network> uname -a
Linux linux-lap 2.6.27.29-0.1-default #1 SMP 2009-08-15 17:53:59 +0200 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux openSUSE 11.1 (x86_64)

If the new hard drive does not just work, I'll be forced to spend another hour
on the phone with HP to get a RMA#.

Last year I found many ARM packages were moving from 256MB on chip flash and
up. Off chip nand flash comes in even higher densities. Not a cost or size
issue but a power concern in battery operated devices.

The TI Davinci board had a Monta Vista Linux with ARM9 core, TI did a good job
refining Monta Vista's install into a nice package. I found ARM9 can easily
support the memory needed to run most any embedded linux feature.

If your needs are more on the micro controller end you can also use u-boot with
the provided scheduler example code for a small micro controller like project.

I been interested in the Timesys package much lower price point compared to MV.

well as linux partitions to a new larger harddrive for my old Dell 600m one
hard drive in the laptop another in an external USB enclosure. I like Knoppix
5.1 for this as well but it was having a problem with old RedHat 9 partitions.
I've gotten away from Partition Magic it was not able to read all linux
partitions. dd "Unix Power Tools", or Knoppix Hacks.

Allot of embedded CPU sites give you a good idea which releases go together.
http://users.rcn.com/rneswold/avr/c51.html the fsf.org releases used to do a
better job of organizing this..

It looks like you already have a pretty good match, binutils does not change
nearly as frequently as gcc, though I was not able to find a reference to the
version of binutils the following mentions a dependency on GMP and MPFR.

http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-4.3/changes.html

Perhaps it is just a build order,

The following suggests you are not alone as well as binutils needs to be built
first.

I'm usually building cross compilers for ARM and such, I often get errors when
I try to build a gcc cross compiler before building the related binutils tools
which will make the linker tool and dependencies. I have to be sure I get

I would recommend "Understanding the Linux Kernel" and "Linux Kernel
Development Second Edition"

kernel/init

do_mounts.h do_mounts_md.cKconfig Makefile version.o
do_mounts.cdo_mounts_initrd.c initramfs.c main.c
do_mounts_devfs.cdo_mounts_rd.c version.c

These files and kernel initialization is explained in these references. Very
little if any ARM specific dependencies here.

grep -i ARM *
Binary file built-in.o matches
Binary file do_mounts_initrd.o matches
Binary file do_mounts.o matches
Binary file do_mounts_rd.o matches
Binary file initramfs.o matches
Kconfig:default y if ARM || H8300
Kconfig:config OBSOLETE_MODPARM
main.c: printk("early_parm_test: %s\n", rest ?: "(null)");
Binary file main.o matches

My own project had a generous block of DDR memory for the creation of this
ramfs.

The Texas Instruments Davinci platform uses a ARM926 core. U-Boot with a Monta
Vista Pro Linux kernel. I would start with U-Boot/arch/ARM to get started on a
new evaluation platform. This platform was not free about 7K for the licenses,
I thought this was a good value considering rolling your own from uCLinux.org
is work. The hardware was only $500.00

I'm using an MMU less ARM966 with no OS, GNU Linux development environment .
ARM embedded question might best be answered on some of the
comp.arch.embedded.. GNUARM Yahoo groups?

Working with a embedded platform using a TI part and
Monta Vista Pro embedded linux. A programming utility
was offered for this platform Flasher.tar.gz.
Working on a SuSE workstation for this project I
un-tar this host independent tool, and the readme.txt
tells me it was built with Windows .net and to build
it for linux I need to run 'mono Flasher.exe'. Sure
enough the Flasher.cs source file mostly written in
C++ style, hooks a couple of mono library builtins.
After tying 2 versions of mono to get the correct one
I was finally able to build a resulting binary
executable, certainly I had to run 'dos2unix' on the
un-tared source. My head is still swimming with
Windows<->Linux issues around this. With the resulting
executable you can program flash memories with a new
u-boot executable.

I decided I didn't want to program my u-boot image
with this utility after all. Hope this helps.

My own experience with mono on a SuSE 10.2 10.3
fizzled. It seemed that SuSE was trying to provide a
migration path for Windows GUI's into Linux and
embedded platforms. I had a few lines of C Sharp in a
flash programming utility written for linux, (beats
all I've seen to date). I had to try a couple of
versions of mono on SuSE before I got the right one
for the source I was looking at. When I moved forward
on to the embedded GUI portion of the project I found
it was easier to implement an embedded GUI in almost
any other language GTK+.., freedesktop.org ...
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/4870
I was not able to find any significant ongoing
development of mono based projects, like SuSE thought
there would be a demand for GUI projects moving from
MS to Linux but it never materialized.

SUSE 10.1 install difficulty

2006-08-07 Thread Michael Nolin

I'm having some SUSE 10.1 install difficulty, I'm
hoping a few users on this group may be familar with
these problems.

The SUSE install CD#1 ended in a reboot of the
machine. After installing CD#1 two more times with the
same end result I realized I had enough installed to
boot the installation. Booting the installation I was
able to later install CD's 2 and 3.

Now that I am unable to login I realize the login
account configuration on CD1 never ran. Verifying with
KNOPPIX sure enough the shadow file has a root with no
password, and no user account for my default login.

opensuse.org indicates that there was an earlier
graffical login problem which would require more than
one login attempt before succesfully acknowledging the
login.

Despite the fact the the root appears not to be
password protected I have not been able to login from
rescue mode. The repair app on CD#1 was unable to run
to completion.

This is my first SUSE install so perhaps someone with
more experience....

'ethtool -d eth0' may help in determining if the PHY
in fact is in half duplex while the remote end
advertises something else.

Not a far from what you are using there. The biggest

they checked out fine. Installed fine on 2-3 machines.

supported especially on thier desk top machines.

Dell support seems useless (reactive), my machine was
shipped with the wrong drivers disk, and multiple
requestes ended in a dead end. Lots of phone calls
very little help. The web support channel has some
good driver updates.

Re: FTP Download issues -- resolved

2004-07-12 Thread Michael Nolin

Great! hours of debug can be saved by a 14.99 card.
I'll keep that in mind nextime I spend multiple days
debugging flakey 4 port Intel Pro 100e cards with
ethtool and ethereal. Great idea looking for
pretested, Linux compatable hardware, it seems buggy
hardware is starting to plague the PC market at higher
and higher volumes.

Re: FTP Download issues (was: Destination show up twice in traceroute)

2004-07-06 Thread Michael Nolin

I've seen this behavior on PPP configured links. I
used ethereal to determine that each time the ftp
session sent a > 1452 byte frame it was dropped up
stream. A "Missconfigured" router/firewall was the
source of the problem.

This problem is common to many ISP's that have not
compensated for this bug. As well as other router
vendors that have stollen intellectual property bugs
and all.
