Re: [GNC] First Day of the Week

2019-08-12 Thread Catscrash
Hi,

at least for Ubuntu this is definitely not a problem. I don't know if
the mailinglist allows pictures, but the date-chooser definitely shows
the monday as first day of the week:

I have the date settings in gnucash set to system default and my ubuntu
is set to german

I'm not sure how to get to that report you are talking about, I'm
certainly happy to check there...

best regards

Re: [GNC] Transaction Report Sign Reverses

2019-08-12 Thread Christopher Lam
Maybe I'm being thick here, but it's still not easy. We need to start with
the knowledge that *internally* income amounts are negative -- after all
they usually balance with positive asset amounts. Also, liability amounts
are also internally negative, but no one seems to have a problem with that.

Second, the Transaction Report historically needs to handle multiple types
of grouping and sorting -- not only account-name, but also
other-account-name. Running a TR with sort=other-account-name may not be
that common, but is still supported.

Third, we can select both income and expense accounts for reporting. If
during a period I earn $100 and spend $80, I expect the grand total to be
$20 (or -$20) rather than $180. Conversely if we select both asset and
liability accounts, we'd expect the grand-total to be a net-worth-type
amount.

The TR internally will:
1) get all splits from all specified accounts
2) sort them accordingly - typically stable-sort by account-name (or
other-account-name) and date.
3) keep a tally of subtotals, adding split-amounts which are currently
negative for income amounts.
4) add split details onto table. When the sort-criteria (e.g. account-name)
changes between rows, render the subtotals.

How to design a subtotal strategy that handles all possibilities as above?
Do we want the *split* amounts to be negative for expenses and liability? I
don't know. A better strategy can be used as along as it can handle all gnc
peculiarities as above. I would hope that the TR can produce a useful
output, with subtotals & grand-totals which are consistent irrespective of
the global sign-reversing strategy.

Anyone wishing to try the old strategy, can patch trep-engine.scm as
follows:
(map (lambda (cell)
   (let ((cell-monetary (vector-ref cell 0))
+(reverse? (and (vector-ref cell 1)
reversible-account?))
 (subtotal? (vector-ref cell 2)))
-(and subtotal? cell-monetary)))
+(and subtotal?
+ (if reverse?
+ (gnc:monetary-neg cell-monetary)
+ cell-monetary
 cells)))

The main issue for us is a report we use to keep track of our income work. It
reports the amount billed in the current week and each of the weeks since the
beginning of the previous month. Each of those weeks starts on GnuCash's
default week-starting day rather than the day we would like to start on. I set
this up with a simple transaction report by setting the date range to run from
the "start of previous month" to "today". I then set the primary sort key to
"Date" and the primary subtotal for date key to "Weekly". If there is a way to
get this level of granularity to start on a different day, I would like to hear
about it.

I'm sorry, but (as I said) I have a lot on my plate. Spending the time to
write up clear bug reports that probably won't be looked at for years and
certainly won't be addressed any time soon does not seem like a good investment
at this time.

Re: [GNC] First Day of the Week

2019-08-12 Thread John Morris
Hi Frank,
Thank you for thinking about my little problem.

I don't understand why we would assume this is a bug in GTK. If GnuCash tells
GTK to create a calendar with Sundays as the first day of the week, it should
obey. The problem is that some code is not looking at the locale setting on my
computer. Since this is a completely new test build, I think I can rule out a
corrupted operating system. Also, other date-aware applications are correctly
picking the first day of the week.

I guess a real test would be to find some other application that uses GTK to
display calendars and see if it picks the correct first day of the week on my
system. I'm not aware of any I could try.

Best,
John

Re: [GNC] First Day of the Week

2019-08-12 Thread John Morris
Hi Ken,
Thanks for thinking about my little problem. However, I don't see how this
would help. The regular Mac interface gives me the option to change the start
of the week from the locale's default. GnuCash should be reading that change
like all the other date-aware applications. It does not. Also, as I mentioned
in my first post, I have tried changing my locale to a region that defaults to
Monday as the first day of the week. GnuCash still insists on using Sunday as
the first day of the week. I don't see why GnuCash is any more likely to obey a
custom locale than it is to obey one of the default locales.

Have you tried doing this on any system? Did it work? My Windows experience
is extremely limited and my Unix experience (other than poking around under the
hood of MacOS X) is more than thirty years out of date. I was really hoping to
hear from some Mac users living in regions where the default first day of the
week is Monday. There must be some. Do they simply ignore this problem or have
they found a way to change what seems from my end to be a hard-coded default?

Best,
John

Re: [GNC] Get online quote for Canada Fund

2019-08-12 Thread Kaman Wu
Hello Ove,

I try to change the code by myself. I am using windows 10 right now.

I find the perl code
at:
C:\Strawberry\cpan\build\Finance-Quote-1.49-0\lib\Finance\Quote\Cdnfundlibrary.pm

BUT after I made the change, it looks like the GNC still call the old
code. Can I change that file directly?
Does GNC keep a copy of this file? (I cannot find the it)

Thanks a lot.

Running ver 3.6 now but one of the prior versions allowed me to use my mouse
scroll wheel to cycle through the open tabs. I can no longer do that, so I
have reverted to putting the tabs on the left side instead of across the top

Any tab open when you exit should be re-loaded when you next open GnuCash.

So just have the Cash account register open when you close the app.

Re: [GNC] First Day of the Week

2019-08-12 Thread Adrien Monteleone
From that page it seems that they didn’t provide a means for setting first day
of the week.

A cursory search of how to set first day of the week to Monday using Gnome
(Ubuntu forums) explained to edit the /usr/share/i18n/locales file for your
locale and either edit or add the line:

first_weekday 2

to the LC_TIME section.

I tried on a whim copying this file with the above edit from my Ubuntu vm to
~/Library/Application Support/GnuCash/gkt-3.0/ in my Mac filesystem but to no
avail. (maybe it needs a /locale subdirectory? does it even look here for such
a file?)

I also tried setting the Mac’s calendar (and GnuCash’s date) to ISO-8601 which
allegedly uses Monday=1, still no dice.

I’m not sure how GNOME users are getting their calendars to switch to Monday=1
unless GNOME doesn’t use GtkCalendar for that feature.

Looks like this is a GTK bug unless someone knows how to setup a custom locale
in MacOS for it.

Regards,
Adrien

Re: [GNC] First Day of the Week

2019-08-12 Thread Adrien Monteleone
John,

Thanks for the insights.

How does first day of the week affect reports in GnuCash? The only report I can
think of that might be an issue is the Expenses/Income vs. Day of the week, but
each day is reported separately, though Sunday is listed first in the key, it
is a pie chart. All other date selections I can find are based on month or
longer, or use specific dates. (do some reports give weekly subtotals for
example? I haven’t seen or used that yet)

I didn’t think about the date picker as I always enter my dates manually, but
certainly, I can see how that could be annoying.

Certainly, the software should be able to match your life. You shouldn’t have
to change to work around a bug.

And please report any issues you find. While previous reports may not have
received attention (yet) that does not mean some other issue won’t. It might be
that someone else with developer skills and time might jump in and fix one or
two. One issue may shed light on others. A discussion may ensue on how to
address the issue for when it is actually fixed. So reporting isn’t a waste of
time even if they don’t get fixed right away. (or even for an extended period)

I know some calendar issues were looked at in the move to 3.x. Perhaps one of
the devs familiar with this part of the code might take a look or chime in.
There might be a good reason why this is still an issue.

Re: [GNC] First Day of the Week

2019-08-12 Thread John Morris
Hi Adrien,
Thank you for your interest. The first day of the week is, of course, a
personal preference. However, because it is set to Monday everywhere else in my
life, it would be more convenient if GnuCash were set similarly.

Yes, I am aware of System Preferences > Language & Region; that is where I
have set the first day of the week for the rest of my computer. Thank you for
pointing that out.

The main issue that makes life difficult with GnuCash using Sunday as the
first day of the week is in our business. We have a small editing business, but
we don't work conventional hours. Basically, we work whenever we can fit it in.
That means we might be working at 11p on a Sunday or 6a on a Tuesday. However,
we still find it convenient to break our time up into weeks. Reports from our
time-tracking software help us know if we are doing enough income work to make
our goals. Reports from our accounting software (GnuCash) help us know if our
income is matching expectations and helping us reach our goals. However, it is
just a little more difficult because the time tracking software is set to use
Monday as the first day of the week, but GnuCash refuses to accept that
setting.

A second place this problem makes trouble for me is entering transactions.
Sometimes I type dates and sometimes I select them from the drop-down menu.
That menu puts Sunday on the far left of the block instead of the far right
where I expect it. Thus, I sometimes click the wrong date because I forget that
GnuCash does this. Of course, this is just one example, but I think it gives
the flavor.

Naturally we could change our whole life around to use Sunday as the first
day of the week, but we don't want to do that. Computers should adjust to the
users' lifestyle, not the other way around. We can also just make do, accepting
that the accounting week starts on Sunday and the time-keeping week starts on
Monday. That is how we have functioned since we switched to GnuCash about five
years ago.

I understand that the developer pool is small. This is why I have not bother
reporting the many bugs I work around every day. When I first started using
GnuCash, I reported what I saw, but it quickly became clear that the developers
feel they have bigger fish to fry. Given that I have no time to offer to this
effort, I stopped wasting my time. I would love to help with the development. I
even have some of the skill required and could probably get up to speed fairly
quickly, but my to-do list is way too long for me to take on any new projects.
Frankly, if I were going to get back into development, I would seriously
consider starting from scratch rather than trying to fix the mess that is
GnuCash.

Best,
John

System Preferences > Language & Region is where you can set first day of the
week. (I’m on Mojave)

But I see it has no effect on the calendar displayed in the Scheduled
Transaction editor. (not sure where else this would matter)

I’d have to ask (because I have Sunday as my first day and I don’t understand
the utility of changing it), how does not being able to change it impact your
use of GnuCash? What is more difficult by the day being set to Sunday? I really
mean this as a curiosity. Is it merely a matter of you’ve always seen calendars
start on Monday and it looks odd and sometimes hard to comprehend at a glance?

What parts of the app other than the Scheduled Transaction editor is this an
issue for?

Please note, the developer pool is small, their time is not infinite, and they
are all volunteers. (and I’d guess they all have day jobs) They have a roadmap
for prioritizing their time. If something is an annoyance but the app is still
usable, it is likely to be pushed to the back burner unless someone new decides
to jump in and help address it.

I could understand why a chart with more slices might default to a larger size,
but it appears the bottom two charts both have 3 slices, yet are different
sizes.

However, since they are set to all be the same size, they should all be the
same size.

What happens if you use the percentage option instead of pixels?

[GNC] First Day of the Week

2019-08-12 Thread John Morris
Hi All,
I've been using GnuCash for several years now, tolerating the bugs and
idiosyncrasies on the hope that it would improve with time. That hope has been
borne out to some degree, but I'm still waiting on many issues. It's been a
while since I bothered to install a new version, so I am again hopeful when I
finally start using 3.6.

However, I have begun testing and found that at least one of my most-desired
fixes is not in place. Years ago, I wrote about my inability to make GnuCash
start the week on Monday instead of Sunday. Other people reported not problems
in this regard, but we were not able to find any setting that would make it
work on my computer (macOS 10.10 at the time, soon to be 10.14). My system
region is set to United States and the system's first day of the week is set to
Monday. However, when I open GnuCash (opening an existing .gnucash file or
creating a new file), I always get Sunday as the first day of the week.

Since I am testing (on macOS 10.11 for now), I tried opening an existing file
and creating a new file with the system region set to France (which
automatically gives Monday as the first day of the week). I even tried choosing
French Franc as the currency when setting up a new set of books. No luck. I
still get Sunday as the first day of the week. How do I get GnuCash to use
Monday as the first day of the week?

For what it's worth, I was also disappointed to see that GnuCash 3.6 still
suffers from the focus problems I have been suffering through in 2.6. I will be
very happy when the backend is fully rebuilt and these bugs can get the
attention they deserve.

Best,
John

It is definitely a terminology confusion.

In the old days, especially with "cash book" accounting*, a "journal
entry" referred to a transaction that was not affecting any of the cash
accounts. So mainly corrections and adjustments (example: recording
depreciation).

It has no real meaning in a "virtual journal" system like gnucash.

Michael D Novack

* A shortcut where there was a special part of the ledger called the
"cash book" which had the account for cash and a half dozen or so of the
most affected other accounts. Any transactions that could skipped the
"enter into the journal first" step and were entered directly in the
cash book << usually 90+% of transactions could be >> Any transactions
that affected OTHER accounts were entered the usual way, in the journal
and then posted to the ledger.

When I did this, I usually reserved a pair of columns in the cash book
for the journal. For example, using 12 column paper, I could have the
journal, cash, and the four "most popular" other ledger accounts. Or
possibly more if only keeping one side here << the "real" ledger had all
the accounts, even those in the cashbook. At the bottom of each cashbook
page the totals were posted to the "real account" >>

The reason for using a cashbook was to reduce posting. Transcription
errors during posting were by far the majority of all errors.

I think Frank is on the right track. The original poster is coming from
Quicken which I have never used. I think it is similar to Quickbooks
which I have used a little. Journal entries are used for corrections,
some transfers between accounts, etc., in Quickbooks.

Gnucash does not have a special notion of journal entry. The General
Journal is just a view of all transactions from all accounts. This may
be what is confusing the original poster.

In the times of ink and paper, you had to enter (parts of) a
transaction 3 times:
Journal, Account A, Account B.

On computers it is different, e.g.
you enter all details in account A and the relevant parts appear also
in account B and Tools->General Journal.

I'm not sure how this is a challenge, especially since both John and
David C. pointed you in the right direction in the docs. Perhaps you are
associating the term "Journal entry" with something special?

To begin, set your View preference to "Basic" and on the
Preferences:Accounts tab, uncheck "Use formal accounting labels."

In the Chart of Accounts, double-click Assets:Cash

In the Cash account register:

 * Type the date of the transaction, for example, today is August 12,
2019, so I would enter 8/12/19 because I use US style dates. Your
date preferences might have this as 12-08-2019, or even 2019-08-12!
 * After entering the date, press the Tab key twice, which will move

Enter the date and description. On the first time Credit Cash for the amount.
On the second line, Debit Drugs for the amount.

That should do it.

Re: [GNC] Transaction Report Sign Reverses

2019-08-12 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
Well, it seems odd to me that "Double" display (as Adrien noted)(thank
you, Adrien!) is able to display the figures as the user prefers. It is
also odd to me that the report knows to switch the values of the
individual transactions, but is unable to remember that fact when it
comes to the totals. That right there is the problem.

As for the FAQ, it seems to me that there is a mistake in the example
there: the GnuCash option is to change signs for Income *and* Expenses.
But the example provided reverses Income but not Expenses. Were it to
reverse both sets of accounts as the preference indicates, then the math
should work out correctly ($100+10-20=$90). Or am I missing something here?

Why is it not possible to perform the calculation for totals and then
apply a display modifier so that the user sees numbers as they prefer?

The current solution is a poor one.

This issue could be fixed if the scenario addressed in this FAQ can be
resolved. I don't really know how to handle that particular case.

Hello,

I am trying to create a YTD Capital Gains report, and am
encountering a
problem with how the Transaction Report implements the Sign Reverses
setting.

I recall some time back a discussion about the fact that the Sign
Reverses setting reverses signs in these reports in a confusing way.
There was some discussion about reversing the individual transactions
but not the totals. Although I do not recall the specifics of the
discussion, I am encountering the same situation now, where the
transactions themselves respect the user setting, but the totals
do not.
To say this is confusing is an understatement.

It seems to me that other financial applications must have
encountered
the problem of displaying income to users as a positive value (since
that is how most of us view income!) while still finding a way to
display the correct accounting information.

To display my YTD report of Capital Gains, I ran a Transaction Report
and selected the Income:Realized Gains accounts for the current year.
The result shows losses as positive numbers, and gains as negative. I
don't know about you, but my expectation is reversed from this. If I
change the Sign Reverses setting to Income and Expense, then the
transactions switch, but the totals do not. This result was the
gist of
the discussion in an earlier thread. Bleah!

Now, I know that I can copy the data, paste it into another
program and
change all the settings to my heart's content, but I am looking for a
way to run a report in GnuCash that directly and unambiguously
shows me
whether I have gained money (a positive) or lost it (a negative) over
the current year. Does anyone have suggestions?

FWIW, I attempted to turn this report around and have a report that
lists transactions in the asset accounts, filtered by the
Income:Realized Gains accounts, but that seems to report only the
Asset
account currency--in this case, the mutual fund or stock shares
involved
on the Gain/Loss transaction. Unfortunately, that's not the actual
Gain/Loss value...

It would be nice if the sign reverses setting could be fixed. Barring
that, does anyone have a workaround report setup that can give me a
sensible YTD Capital Gains total as described?

David T.

Re: [GNC] Price in Register Account report not decimal

Interestingly I opened the html report in Libreoffice Calc directly and
it had the decimal not the fraction.  Didn't even need to put the "=" in
front of it.  So thanks John for your suggestion. I'll use it as a work
around. Bit of formatting to do but minor issue.

Should this be reported as a bug or just leave it as is.?
