Use a skript to run the paket manager automatlcaly by crontab.
I do that on a Bunch of Linux machines without problems.

Next, the Linux side is slow and uses a lot of system resources.
Chromebooks are not designed to run apps.

Now, the biggest headache. Gnucash needs it's data file to be local, so I
have to download the data to my Chromebook, then upload it to my computer
when I return home.

Have you tried NFS (Network Filesystem)?
The Data emains home and you can use it as if it were on your Laptop.

In sum, running Gnucash solely on a Chromebook can be done, while a second
instance of Gnucash on a Chromebook should only be done if absolutely
necessary. Of course, this is just my opinion.

[GNC] How to transfer all my accounts etc. to new computer.

2023-08-12 Thread Shevach Pepper
I’m sure this is really simple but I’m not successful.

I installed gnucash on new computer but I can’t find an option to

asked before, but I can’t find any instructions on how to do it.

On my old computer in the AppData>Roaming>GnuCash>books folder I found
a file with end in gnucash.gcm. Can I just copy that file and put into
the new computer in the same place and I’ll get back old of the old
   info?

Tried that but it didn’t work.

Can someone help me and tell me what to do?

Re: [GNC] How to transfer all my accounts etc. to new computer.

2023-08-12 Thread Geert Janssens
Several option:

1. If you remember where you stored your gnucash data file on the old computer,
use your
system's file manager to copy it to the new computer (either via a network
share, cloud drive
or usb stick. Then on the new computer, start gnucash and use File->Open to
locate your
gnucash data file.

2. If you don't remember where you stored it, open gnucash on your old computer
and
select save as... From there you can either detect where you stored your
gnucash data file
originally, or simply save a copy somewhere you can find it later. The take
step one above to
complete the migration.

Note that besides your data file there are a few files that are managed by
gnucash directly
which you also might want to copy over. They have for example your saved
reports and such.
Under Windows these are stored under
%APPDATA%\gnucash

Hi Shevach.

You're correct - it is "simple" to do, and the question has been asked enough
times before to have an entry in the FAQ:

https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/
FAQ#Q:_I_just_got_a_new_computer._What_should_I_copy_over_from_my_old_one.3F

Basically you need to copy your data file. (Just like you need to copy
your word processor docs and spreadsheets and photos and other data files in
your user's old folders.)

Only you can know what your data file is called and where it is in your folder
tree on the old computer.

Maf.

I guess that needs a translator comment that "splits" means transaction splits

Hi Gregory/Susan/Richard/all,

I think that it is important to remember that GnuCash is an all
volunteer project and not an accounting system suitable for almost any
type of organization, other than a very simple one:

https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/pull/1623#issuecomment-1583966278 -
"But GnuCash isn't suitable for large, or even small, enterprises and
never will be. GnuCash is for tiny and simple enterprises; we often say
individuals and sole proprietorships. Even having employees makes using
GnuCash a dubious proposition (no payroll module), as does carrying more
than a very few line items of inventory (no inventory module) or
performing any sort of manufacturing (no bill of materials or cost
accounting modules).

Adding those modules is a non-starter: Consider that it's been 10 years
since we began working on separating libgnucash from the application,
converting from GObject to C++, and changing from a program that can
load its data from a SQL database and put it back to one that is built
around SQL queries. We haven't gotten very far.

Those seeking a F/LOSS accounting solution for larger enterprises should
look to Odoo." (https://www.odoo.com/ &
https://www.odoo.com/accounting-firms)

I include that last part just to make any expectations you might have
more grounded in the reality of GnuCash's current capabilities.

If anyone is interested in expanding GnuCash's capabilities, feel free
to donate to the project here (https://www.gnucash.org/donate.phtml),
just be aware that for US based taxpayers, GnuCash is not a 501c3
registered nonprofit and does not have a fiscal sponsor like some other
open source projects (https://sfconservancy.org/projects/current/ or
https://www.spi-inc.org/projects/), so those donations may not be tax
deductible if the taxpayer itemizes their deductions
(https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc506).

Good luck!

I used Quicken for about 20 years and then changed to GnuCash... I also
only used it for checking, credit cards, and some investments.

I did not import anything; I just started afresh some years ago with
GnuCash (I figured that if I had to go back to Quicken, I could, but as the
years pass, this is less and less likely to be needed).

I have enjoyed GnuCash very much. I especially enjoy the fact that I can
run it on iMac, Windows, or Linux.

The one warning I'd give is that the reports in GnuCash are nowhere near as
ready-to-go as they were in Quicken. I struggled to get the reports to
report how and what I wanted.

But, on the other hand, people in this list are very helpful.

Think about that for a moment. Think about in what ways this problem

making a copy elsewhere (off your computer -- that's the backup) and
then later bringing it back to your computer (that's the restore). The

I disagree in the sense that in the days of pen and ink on paper all of
those things were done before we had computers. Using gnucash you can do
anything you could pen and ink on paper.

What is being said is that gnucash is not an "integrated business
system" with multiple components sending feeds to each other. Components
like POS, inventory, payroll, etc. are not PART of ":general ledger"
(gnucash as normally used). Those other components would be storing data
that isn't financial as well as what is and is sent to by "feeds".

For example, besides things like unit cost of batch an inventory system
is dealing with things like shelving location, restock level, primary
and secondary sources, etc. A POS system is tracking things like the ID
of the sales person currently at the register. The payroll system things
like emergency contact, length of service, etc.

MY druthers? I am opposed to "monolithic" systems, much preferring
"modular" systems << and remember, I used to work on/design LARGE
systems >> If nothing else, makes changing and testing MUCH easier since
well defined boundaries and data exchange between components. So while I
do not think the developers of gnucash should tackle these other
components PERHAPS it would make sense to make gnucash (the general
ledger component) a module that could receive "feeds". Then others could
decide to tackle one or more of these other parts of "a business
system". Hopefully also keeping them modular (as they might be feeding
each other as well as feeding general ledger. For example, POS would
feed both "general ledger" (the money part of the sale)  AND inventory
(the physical part of the sale).

I was reading up on the Hacker's guide at
https://github.com/finance-quote/finance-quote/blob/master/Documentation/Hackers-Guide

more easier. I'll follow up with what I find.

Thank you, to both, for all these valuable pointers.

Kalpesh,

Many, but not all, of the F::Q modules make use of the Smart::Comments module.
TSP.pm is one of them. The environment variable DEBUG will need to be set, and
with no changes to the Perl code you should see helpful information printed to
STDERR. In the code, these are lines that begin with "###" (note, just 3 pound
signs) in those modules using Smart::Comments.

A quick look at the TSP module and I see two where the "tsp" method will return
*without* setting "success" and "errormsg" for any of the symbols passed to it.
This will happen if the http get call fails, or whatever is downloaded is not 2
or more lines.

 my $reply = $ua->get($url, @HEADERS);
 ### [] url : $url
 ### [] reply: $reply

 return unless ($reply->is_success);

 my @line = split(/\n/, $reply->content);

 return unless (@line > 1);

In the code snippet, there are two examples Smart::Comments use which could be
useful in your case. With DEBUG set the code would print the url to STDERR, and
entire $reply object (status, headers, cookies, body).

Whether or not this helps you, the omission of not returning the proper failure
data is an issue.

Hope this helps.

Re: [GNC] How to transfer all my accounts etc. to new computer.

2023-08-12 Thread Michael or Penny Novack

I’m sure this is really simple but I’m not successful.

I installed gnucash on new computer but I can’t find an option to
import all my old accounts from old computer. I’m sure this has been
asked before, but I can’t find any instructions on how to do it.

On my old computer in the AppData>Roaming>GnuCash>books folder I found
a file with end in gnucash.gcm. Can I just copy that file and put into
the new computer in the same place and I’ll get back old of the old
info?

Suppose  you asked us "I used a word processor to create a document. How
do I move THIS document to another computer?"

You would expect us to say something like "Well what did you name that
document and into what directory (file folder) did you place it?". And
if to that question you answered "I don't know." what would you expect
us to tell you? You perhaps have hundreds of documents ending with the
file extension usual for that word processor.

Luckily you are unlikely to have many files created by gnucash as the
"data file" (the books themselves). Should have the file extension .gnucash

Able to find it now? Or if more than one, can you tell after trying to
open them?

NEXT TIME (once you have managed to find the right file) give it a name
that will be meaningful to you.

[GNC] Convert Money Market stock acnt to Bank acnt

2023-08-12 Thread Fred Tydeman
Is there an easy way to convert a money market stock account
to a bank account?

Since the price is always $1, and each transaction has Trading splits, the
money market accounts are adding extra data to the book file and the price
history file.

The only way I can think of to do that short of editing your database: Export
the transactions to CSV, edit the CSV to change the commodity, delete the
account and recreate it as type BANK and currency USD, then import the edited
CSV.

*Almost* always $1:

Re: [GNC] Convert Money Market stock acnt to Bank acnt

2023-08-12 Thread David Carlson
Actually, not only can money market funds 'break the buck' in some cases,
there has also, even recently, been bank closures where depositors were
temporarily unable to access their cash. At least there is another level
of protection there in the US called the FDIC, but that too has limits. I
would not document these risks in GnuCash beyond identifying the asset type
correctly then only documenting a failure when it actually happens.

Don't forget, the great majority of files ending .gnucash will most
likely not be the data file but backups of it at various stages. The OP
wants to look for a file whose name does _not_ include a 14-digit
number, which is the timestamp for when that particular backup file was
made.

An additional complication is that by default Windows hides file
extensions, so the OP may or may not see ".gnucash" at the end of a data
file's name.

What the OP should do, in my opinion, is

1. Open GnuCash on the old computer.
2. Let it open the most recently used file (as it does automatically).
3. Click File, and look at the list just under the word Properties in
the menu.
4. Hover the mouse over the first of those, without clicking it.

The full path and file name should appear in the status line or in a
popup "tool tip", depending on GnuCash version.

I've just had to do this because I dropped my laptop.
I've gone from 4.14 to 5.1 in the same move.

I've transferred my ~/ (home directory) from one computer to the new
one.
Gnucash opens, but a lot of my preferences are gone, and even which is
my next invoice number.
I open Gnucash > Help > About, and attach the screenshot.

This tells me where to look for my preferences, data etc.
GNC_USERDATA_DIR is /home/liz/.local/share/gnucash
Nope, my data files are in subdirectories of
/home/liz/Nextcloud/gnucash/
My *.gcm files are under books in ~/.local/share/gnucash/

$ ls /home/liz/.local/share/gnucash
accelerator-map deviceidhashsaltsqif-accounts-map storage
booksexpressions-2.0 saved-reports-2.8
stylesheets-2.0 checks hsts-storage.sqlite
saved-reports-2.8-backup translog

GNC_USERCONFIG_DIR is /home/liz/.config/gnucash
Nope, this directory is empty (and I checked two other computers that
have shared this data and all are empty directories here)

What does the FAQ say?
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_I_moved.2Frenamed_my_data_file_and_my_reports_disappeared._How_do_I_get_them_back.3F

"Reports are stored in a separate file in the ~/.gnucash/books
directory."

Nope, no such directory
$ ls ~/.gnucash/books
ls: cannot access '/home/liz/.gnucash/books': No such file or directory

OK, I am supposed to know what I am doing, and I can't this time,
having advanced from 4.14 to 5.1, find where to put my preferences
file(s).

There is a serious disconnect between the documentation and the new
version here.
I can understand that a person less familiar with Gnucash could have a
lot of difficulty moving to a new computer.

And by the way, where does the new version expect to find my *.gcm
files??

Re: [GNC] How to transfer all my accounts etc. to new computer. Linux version

2023-08-12 Thread David Cousens
Liz,

The saved reports are in /home/liz/.local/share/gnucash/saved_reports2.8.
GNC_USERDATA_DIR is the location for the user preferences data and does not
refer to the users gnucash data files which are always stored in a location of
choice under the users's home directory , i.e. it is not specified by GnuCash
but by the users.

Part of the confusion for new users is that there is no one location in the
documentation which discusses the location of the book data files and the user
preference files. The most complete info is in the wiki, but new users are not
going to necessarily go there. It is further complicated by having had to shift
with upgrades to the various libraries used by GnuCash which forces change in
the locations between differnt GnuCash Versions. Add to that that the three
OS's all store such data differently.

Maybe the wiki contents are sufficiently mature to be put in the main
documentation.

all very well, but that file
~/.local/share/gnucash/books/*.gcm contains the data for the registry
displays but where is the date format, the last invoice number,

2023-08-12 Thread David Cousens
I have to confess I don't know where that info is hiding. I tried changing the
format from the default locale for the date but couldn't see anything changing
in the .gcm file. Same for invoice number.
John may be able to tell us where the various bits of info go. I used "find -
mmin -120" to try and locate any files which had changed in the last 120 min
with no luck. if we can get the info then I can try updating the wiki and work
longer term perhaps on getting that info into the documentation.

I just don't know, and having used rsync -av to move everything, I am
not sure what has been missed. If the data has moved in the upgrade I
can understand that my method may have not been a sure method of data
transfer when changing computers.

Certainly once we have the data we can update the documentation.
