My two cent on the topic 

Before I zeroed in to GNU Cash for my personal finance accounting, I
evaluated many open source softwares like Money manager Ex, Skoorage,
Kmymoney and likes and eventually I decided to settle in GNC for
multiple reasons.

However, I remember one feature (either in skoorage or Kmymoney), which
has a feature of grouping Chart of Accounts (COA) Institution wise.

While posting the transaction, one can select the Institution and
transaction flows in that institution. While generating report, one can
generate report for all Institutions or for an individual institution.

Now, this “Institution” can be an either a family member, or a company
or a company business division.

This feature is very relevant, if one wishes to monitor family finance
along with individual finance, or separate business line finance.

So configuration can be like Family (All Institutions)-->
Institution1(family Member 1) + Institution2(Family member2) and so on.

GNC manages accounts as an individual file. So, to achieve above, if a
report can be developed to combine multiple files (Accounts) to generate
a report !

Of course, this is a suggestion of a layman, without giving cognizance
to the technicality involved and basic software structure of the GNC and
limitations.

I just thought of sharing this idea, when I came across the discussion
on the topic.

Paras,

Just include a blank split (no entries in shares, price, buy, or sell) to the
mutual fund account and the APR will pick it up.

Thanks John for your prompt feedback.

Yes, I am posting it manually. Only down side is that i can not assign this
income to that specific Mutual fund account and hence it does not reflects in
Advance Portfolio Report, I guess.

Of course, this is not the big deal.

That's not a scenario that's coded into the stock assistant so you'll have to
enter it manually. Since dividend payments are presumably periodic it sounds
like a good candidate for a scheduled transaction.

[GNC] Posting of Dividend through Stock Assist

2024-01-16 Thread Paras Desai

Hello,

Greetings!

I was trying to post the Dividend income from a Mutual Fund through
Stock Assist. But I encountered an issue. I am narrating my issue as below.

When I receive the dividend, 10 % of TCS (Tax Collected at Source) is
deducted and deposited to the Tax authority on my behalf and the
remaining amount is paid to me. Such Tax deducted and deposited to Tax
authority is My Tax credit and in my books of account it should reflect
as Assets (Tax Credit)

So my posting should look like this

Dividend : Rs 1000 Cr (Income Account : Income from Dividend)

Cash : Rs 900 Dr (Asset Account : My Bank)

Tax deducted : Rs100 Dr (Asset Account : Tax Credit)

There is no expense involved in the transaction.

Now, when I try to post this transaction through Stock Assist, It offers
me two options

1. Either I show the difference between the Dividend and Cash (which is
Tax deducted) as expense, or I capitalize. There is no option to post
the difference as tax credit in Assets account.

AS a result, I need to post the transaction, with manual split, but in
that case, I'm afraid I can not show return in form of dividend income
for the Mutual Fund Account in portfolio report.

Has anyone come across such a typical situation ?

Thanks

Re: [GNC] posting of Switching of Mutual Fund

2024-01-09 Thread Paras Desai

Hello Geoff,

Firstly, I must salute you for your very methodical and illustrative
explanation. It is really heartening to see the kind of special efforts
you put to first create the accounts, posting illustrative transactions
yourself, taking screenshots and arranging them beautifully, so that one
can understand easily. My profound and heartfelt thanks to you.

I adopted your second approach, as I need to report the taxable STCG.
However, I took little different approach by splitting the transaction
manually following the examples in your screenshot, and every thing fell
in place, closing balance of both the Mutual Funds, their current
valuation, STCG in Income head, realized gain in Advance Portfolio
report. I need little practice before I scrub my portfolio
automatically, as it has many entries, and I was bit hesitant,  so I did
it manually but will certainly learn the same.

Once again thanks a ton and wish you a very happy new years ahead

My best regards to you Geoff.

Hi Paras

This is very easy to do in GnuCash, and it will even calculate the
prices and capital gains (or losses) for you.

1. Use the Security Editor to create the Securities for both funds.
2. Create the Accounts for the funds and link them to the Securities.
3. Enter the Buy on Liquid - note how GNC calculates the Price.
4. Enter the Sell on Liquid, with Equity as the second account.

See attached "gnc_paras01.jpg" and note:
A. Price Database is automatically updated
B. Gain does not appear on any of your Accounts
C. Balance Sheet shows your Capital Gain as "Unrealised"

And that is all done and dusted...

...unless you need to "realise" your capital gains(losses) as
Income(Expenses) as tax time.  If so, please read on.

GnuCash has a sensational feature called Lots that is designed to track
and realise your capital gains & losses, but it can be a bit daunting
for new users.

1. Open the Account for Liquid Fund
2. Actions -> View Lots
3. In the Lots window, click on "Scrub Account"

See attached "gnc_paras02.jpg" and note:
A. New Capital Gain/Loss transaction in Liquid Fund
B. Gain now shows in your Accounts***
C. Balance Sheet shows your Gain as "Retained Earnings"

*** By default, the GnuCash Lot Editor puts all Gains & Losses in an
account called "Orphaned Gains" - you need to edit the Gain transaction
and assign it to the appropriate Account - in this example, "STCG".

Hope this helps.

Regards

Geoff

Hello Michael,

Thanks for your time to reply my queries

However, I think I have confused you with my question or term used in it.

The term of "Equity Fund" was meant to signify the name of Mutual Fund that
invest in all stock (Equity of the companies, that is the term used here in
India for such types of fund as in like Debt Fund, Liquid Fund, Multi Assets
Fund etc)

I did not mean to Debit Equity as it is a standard of the accounting parlance.

[GNC] Moving from quicken

2024-01-07 Thread Paras Desai
In order to have tax report GNUCASH offers some options

1. If you are from USA, you can use GNUCASH inbuilt tax report

2. For non usa users, there are few work around, which i have adopted

A. Create income account and in its name add suffix taxable

Or

B. While posting income add "tax" in description.

Then run account or transaction report, in option menu filter "contains tax in
description"

Or select account including child account which contains tax in its description.

All transactions or balance for the period selected will be there in the report
generated.

This may need some practice or couple of attempts, but the report will be
useful for knowing taxable income

Of course while posting you get to know which income is taxable and which is
not.

Hope this helps

[GNC] Indian rupee symbol ₹

2023-12-29 Thread Paras Desai
Hello

I was trying to introduce Indian rupee symbol ₹ instead of Rs. In GNUCASH

I tried to follow following steps..

1. I went to regional setting of my windows 10 and changed the currency symbol
from drop-down option to ₹. After doing this when I opened GNU, Rs. Was
replaced by ? Mark.

2. Then I tried to go to currency setting (security setting) found Indian
rupee, pressed edit at bottom and tried to change currency symbol from Rs. To ₹
by pressing control+ alter+ 4. I could type rupee symbol but after pressing ok
it reverted to Rs.

3 So GNU recognises rupee ₹ symbol neither through window setting nor setting
from within GNU case nor combination of both.

It does recognise other currency symbol however.

This is not absolutely critical, but thought of sharing.

With my best regards

Re: [GNC] Gnu cash Version 5.5 error message

2023-12-19 Thread Paras Desai
Hello John

It seems that this issue is bit adamant.

After uninstalling and reinstalling, the message disappeared as i reported.

But when i set to enter transactions this evening, the message again reappeared.

So I restarted computer and open gnucash, it opened without error message. I
tried to close gnu cash and reopen few times the error message appeared
randomly.

Worse, i decided to update gnu cash on another laptop used by my wife. It
failed to install stating that it is unable to close service. I was forced to
abort the installation, re-start the laptop and then i only I could install the
update.

So there seems some problem with New Version or the legacy issue of back ground
service running interfering the successful update.

Thanks

Paras

Sorry, I misinterpreted

I find a message about lock file stating gnu cash instance is already running

That's normal after a crash, which prevents GnuCash removing the lock file. You
can safely click "Open Anyway" in that case.

If you get the entry point error again could you take a screenshot? I can't
find any references to "xmllOFTPClose" in any of our dependencies nor does
Google find it.

Try killing the gnucash instance in Task Manager and restarting GnuCash 5.5. I

[GNC] Balance column Lost

Hello Adrien

Thanks a lot for sparing your time to check on my problem. Really appreciate
your support.

I did what you have suggested and i could get back my balance column and along

This made me think, in order to prevent this from recurring by some careless
guys like me, is it possible to restrict the width of each column to a minimum
dimension of pixels? This way we can prevent it from accidentally disappearing.
Some suggestions are easier said than implemented though ! And i do understand
that.

Paras,

Sorry, I misinterpreted

I find a message about lock file stating gnu cash instance is already running

That's normal after a crash, which prevents GnuCash removing the lock file. You
can safely click "Open Anyway" in that case.

If you get the entry point error again could you take a screenshot? I can't
find any references to "xmllOFTPClose" in any of our dependencies nor does
Google find it.

Try killing the gnucash instance in Task Manager and restarting GnuCash 5.5. I
hope that's a leftover from 5.4.

Yes the installation completed successfully.

That message was there .

Little Google search points to the possibility of a corrupted XML file in
windows.

Thanks.

In trying to track down a Total (Period) issue, I used Edit -> Preferences ->
Accounting Period to change the Start Date and End Date fields to Absolute
dates.
After doing Close of that dialog,
there appeared to be no change
in the values in the Total (period) column.
I expected a change, but maybe it is working as designed.

However, after closing and reopening GnuCash, there then were changes in the
values.

2023-12-17 Thread Paras Desai
Hello Gyle

Thanks for your reply .

I did try that too.

The problem is, line parting balance column and credit column are so
overlapped, i am unable to separate them.

So when i adjust other columns, scroll bar does appear at the bottom, but still
balance column is not visible.

It appears that in my quest to adjust column width manually, i have lost
balance column irreversibly, or that is what it appears to me. As i have tried
every suggestions i could find.

Thanks

If your columns are too wide the balance column may be out of view. If that is
the case, you may have a scroll bar at the bottom of the screen, which you can
use to see the balance column. If you have the scroll bar and don't want to
scroll all the time, you will have to make one or more columns smaller.

[GNC] tax report for india

2023-10-12 Thread Paras Desai

Hello Adrien,

Thanks for your reply. Much appreciate.

I was running the transaction report, without selecting child account (I
assumed that by selecting “Income” account all children accounts would
be selected automatically, but that was not the case). I selected all
the children accounts (there is a separate Tab for the same in
Transaction report) and I could generate the report, which is close to
what I had expected.

I also tried to run the Account Summary report, which was cleaner and
concise, (though I had to select individual “Taxable Income”
separately), but it could not generate the Grand Total.

Yes, I am aware that I can filter based on the note/description text to
generate the tax report, as you kindly highlighted. But I always fear,
if I may miss tagging a particular transaction as Taxable while posting,
and eventually it may lead to an error in figures I get. So I chose
little foolproof way, though I have to make few extra entries, but it is
OK for me!

Thanks again for your suggestion and wish, one day we will see a tax
report for India too !!

With my best regards

[GNC] Tax report for India

2023-10-11 Thread Paras Desai
Hello friends

I was trying to find work around for getting summary of taxable income at the
end if financial year end. I tried following

1. I put In discerption field as "TAX" while creating different income accounts
for incomes which are taxable (like salary, capital gain, interest, annuity etc)
2. So practically, while posting income, I seperate them out as taxable and non
taxable
3. I also selected "Tax" in tax report for such accounts though it is for USA,
but just to identify such income
 as taxable
4. When I run tax report all report generated with INR value in peranrhesis as
part of text, and income as 0, because it took currency as USD.
5. I tried to run account summary / transaction report with filter word as
Tax, but could not generate desired report.

Is there any good and efficient way to achieve my above mentioned objective?

Thank you in advance for your kind attention

With best regards

[GNC] Advanced Portfolio Report - Brokerage Fees

2023-09-13 Thread Paras Desai
Hi

The tax deducted at source before payout is kind of advance tax, and it becomes
your tax credit.

So ideally you should create an asset account named "advance Tax" or "Tax
deducted at source" and post the deducted amount by bank in this asset account.
You need to identify the brokerage fee seperately and post as brokerage expense.

By thing this, you advance portfolio report will come correctly and will match
with the capital gain tax posted by you as a result of split.

Hope this will work!

[GNC] Advance portfolio report between two dates

2023-09-04 Thread Paras Desai
Hello Michael

Thanks for your feed back.

I fully agree that Dynamic COA can create havoc while comparing two period
(dates) financial report.

That is the precise reason, I have very precisely structured primary account
and secondary sub account so far my work accounts are concern. No one can
change without authorisation. No created account to be deleted even if have
zero balance and so on. There is a detailed SOP implemented as how to handle
COA.

Having said that, i would believe that certain reports does not have much value
if they are not compared. For example, balance sheet - it reflects balances. It
will be one of the most important comparison for example, as how much account
payable has increased between two period and stuff. Even if I have to make
indirect cashflow statement, i need balance sheets between two dates to
calculate increase / decrease in working capital and its effect on operating
cash flow.

Unfortunately, out of habit, i try to mimic such things from my personal
finance too, which I know is over kill. And i must understand the limitations.
But as they say old habit die hard.

I have been trying to adopt GNU Cash fully, though I started using it since
last few months only. My idea was to look no further, if I can get most of the
things from GC.

Thanks again for your time in addressing my question.

With best regards

Hi Ken

Thanks for your kind reply and efforts in explaining a way.

Apparently, it appears that there is no alternative but to run reports on two

Any reports comparing two period is a desirable thing in finance and
accounting, may it be personal accounting.

If you have limited pension funds you use, the easiest way is to use the price
upload feature in GNUCash after you get the pricing from the website.
As you have also mentioned it is long term and i update my pension funds once a
month

Yes your are right.

Subscription to pension fund is for very long term. And can get nav after
logging into fund.

Of course we have an option to switch between one find to another, if one if
one feels other fund option is providing better return. To thst extent we need
to monitor fund performance.

So I raised the question. The investment in pension fund are not liquid except
occasional switch between find.

While it may be possible, is it needed? My company also has a pension fund,
and they put out regular reports, but as it is beyond my control, I've never
been concerned with trying to see how their management of the fund is doing.

On the other hand, I have a 401K, but because it was added to regularly (each
paycheck), entering those transactions (and the dividends, etc) would update
the prices regularly, so I don't really need automated price updates for it,
and that was good enough. If I really needed the correct value, I could log
into the fund and look at it.

Just another thought.

Re: [GNC] NAV of pension fund from India

2023-08-18 Thread Paras Desai
Thanks Losey

Dear all thanks for your kind response. As it turn out to be an unanimous

At present, i am using a mobile expense posting simple app, which I use to
record day to day transaction, which almost mimic my chart of account in GC.
MY only objective was to check if auto sync was possible

[GNC] GNU Cash for Android

2023-08-16 Thread Paras Desai

I looked for Android fork for GC and was presented with two apps
1. GNU Cash
2. GNU cash mobile.

I think they are independent and not connected with GC ORG.

However, I just wish to understand if I use any of the two android app just
for basic day to expense posting, sync with say.. gdrive. And on desktop, if I
access the file from gdrive folder (synced), then my account stays in sync. Is
this possible with kind of GNU cash file structure.?

Re: [GNC] Consolidation of family member accounts

2023-08-14 Thread Paras Desai
Thanks for a sharing fundamental understanding of accounting, that too coming
from a person who seems to have actually done booking keeping with pen and
paper is a real treat. 

It crossed my mind to treat family members as partners but it would have been
more complicated than maintaining individual and independent books for every
member.

Yes, when I raised question about consolidation, i had in my mind that singular
entity (I do work for a public limited entity having few subsidiary) and i was
kind of trying to mimic the consolidation done between such entities by
elimination of inter company transaction.

But I will stick with your suggestion to use equity account to post "within
family" transaction. That is the cleanest way and future ready way.

Thanks again.

That's a misunderstanding of equity coming from the (very common)
special case of "sole" entities. But say, for example, the entity were a
partnership. Then under equity would be the accounts representing the
shares of the partners. And let's say a partner took a "draw" (or in
reverse, made an increase to their investment). Then "cash" would be one
side of the transaction and THEIR equity share the other side.

And of course, back in the days of pen and ink on paper when we did an
actual "close the books" every so often, just like accounts of type
"income" and "expense" are really temporary accounts of fundamental type
equity*, there would be other temporary accounts under equity. Notably
"profit and loss" because the income and expense accounts would first be
closed into that account and then it closed to equity by the net gain of
loss amount << and that account would be the "profit and loss" report >>

IF you were insisting on keeping just one set of books for the family
(but all having their own banks accounts, income, expenses, some
individual and some shared, all doing their own tax reporting, etc.) it
COULD be done using gnucash. But I would strongly suggest you first had
a good understanding about accounting for partnerships, especially
professional partnerships (where partners have income and expenses
considered just theirs as well as income and expenses shared -- often
law firms like this).

Michael D Novack

* Notice that if accounts of type income and expense were actually in
the tree under equity (as opposed to having their own top levels) then
the fundamental equation assets = liabilities + equity remains true in
its simplest form.

Hello Stan

Thanks for your response.

As I have replied to Liz and addressing your valid point, i am maintaining
three separate books for each one of us, independent to each other. And that is
why I raised a query how I can combine or consolidate three books to create one
virtual book which I would call a family book.

Your and Liz point is absolutely correct and fortunately I am following the
same.

Thanks a lot

Well, that's one possibility. Another would be to have a placeholder
account, "Family Equity", with three subaccounts for the three of you.
(No transactions to a placeholder account can be made directly.
Transactions are always made to a subaccount. In reports, you can set
placeholder accounts to have value equal to the total of their
subaccount values.)

Please understand, however, that your question is not really a question
about GnuCash. GC is just the old pen-and-ink accounting translated to
computer files. The question of how to structure a transaction has the
same answer in GC as it would have if you were making pen-and-ink
transactions in one of those old leatherbound journals.

I didn't see you respond to the person who suggested that you should
perhaps have a separate book for each of the three of you. As that
person suggested, if you have everything in one book, when your son
leaves to establish his own household, it may be significant work to
separate his affairs for yours. The same is true if you and your wife
should ever establish separate households, or if one of you should
predecease the other.

[GNC] Consolidation of family member accounts

2023-08-13 Thread Paras Desai
Hello Liz

Thanks for your point. It is absolutely correct and relevant.

As such I am maintaining three separate books for me, my wife and son
independent of each other. And that is why the question came up, how do I
consolidate three separate accounts or books to have a report as what is
happening at family level.

When he goes his own way, once he completes his studies, he can. Bring his
account and his NetWorth both. And when that happens, my family NetWorth will
be mine and my wife's combined ( provided we will together, which is more
likely than not )

Hello Flywire

Thanks for your option. Tagged report is an interesting feature to add. I can
certainly tag transactions, had I been using same books for all family members
to generate report. But I am maintaining three separate books.

However, I have a different user case in my mind, with your report.

[GNC] Consolidation of family member accounts

2023-08-13 Thread Paras Desai
Hello Micheal

Thanks a lot for your kind reply.
Yes I am maintaining three separate books for three family members, as that is
the way to go.

Your idea of debiting equity is good. May need to create a sub account of
equity specifically to capture related party transaction (as they call in
legal parlance ). This will certainly take care of duplication!! This is
excellent suggestion. I have to transfer all past transaction from expense or
receivables to this equity account.

Generally, I consider equity as a holy account, as it is a result of all we do
with all other accounts, but this case could be an exception.

As regarding consolidation, Of course I can arithmetically add three books
having avoided duplicates, but it is a good feature to have if GNC can have an
engine to do this! Of course this is just a desirable and not an essential
feature.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion

Re: [GNC] Consolidation of family member accounts

Thanks for your reply

The question arises because;

My wife and I maintain separate accounts. She has her own income and tax
filing. So we need to maintain accounts independent of each other.

But at the same time, we wish to maintain family level account which generally
gives us idea about

Total Family income, total family expense and total family investment.

This is the same scenario as two independent legal companies wherein one is a
parent company and another is subsidiary company. Both legal entity has to
maintain their own accounts/ books for their respective tax filing and legal
compliances but have to report consolidated financial statement at group level.

Hope I am able to explain the scenario unambiguously

Thanking you

A transfer between two asset accounts (your account to your wife's) doesn't
need any further entries, unless you're considering these transfers as some
kind of bookable event. Are you paying them, or just transferring them funds?
If the latter, then just two entries crediting/debiting the two assets.

When your wife receives the funds this way, there's no change in the family net
worth. When she buys something, the transaction includes her bank account and
the proper expense account.

The problem was caused by the Finance::Quote BSEIndia.pm inserting an invalid string into
the JSON return value, causing the parser to not parse anything. I've reported that to
Finance::Quote ashttps://github.com/finance-quote/finance-quote/issues/335. I'll also

In the meantime you can disable quotes on that stock while you figure out how

Thank you.

Paras,

GnuCash and gnucash-cli use the same code for Finance::Quote integration, so
it's not that. You reported that updating your book worked until 26 July, so
something must have changed around that day. Do you remember changing anything,
like updating GnuCash or Finance::Quote, that might offer a clue?

There may be an error in your tracefile
(seehttps://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Tracefile) that explains why the prices
aren't being updated.

When trying to retrieve quotes in the GUI are you getting the message box
saying that it couldn't retrieve quotes for some stocks followed by a list of
stocks that fail?

John Ralls

Paras,

If you're on Windows or Mac you need to give the full path.
Windows:
 " C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin\gnucash-cli"
***Including the quotes!***
Mac:
  /Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/MacOS/gnucash-cli

[GNC] finance Quote Not working

2023-08-06 Thread Paras Desai

Hello Jim,

Thanks for your suggestion and efforts to test finance quote  for me !

I tried to run the command prompt, and I received the following message.

I run command from as an administrator,  the same message received as below.

gnucash-cli' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

I also tried to use Perl Command Line but without success, the same
message as above was diplayed.

I am not sure, If I am making any mistake, in running command line !!

With regards

[GNC] finance quote not working

2023-08-04 Thread Paras Desai

Hello Jim,

Thanks for replying to my query regarding "Finance Quote Not Working"

My response to  your questions are as below

1. I am looking to update prices of Stocks and mutual Fund both _from
India__only_. After I created stock account and mutual fund account,
the prices of all mutual funds and stocks updated successfully
twice. ( last update was on 26-7-2023) , there after update is not
working . For example, I have tried to update following stock
1. Reliance Industry : Ticker is "RELIANCE", listed at NSEIndia
2. Infosys : Ticker is INFY listed at NSEindia

So far, Mutual fund is concerned, following is an example of the fund

        1. Axis Special Situation Fund , symbol for fetching price
   is INF846K01Y05

2. my source for fetching prices are as below ( from the options offered
by GNUcash)

Stock : Type of quote source --> Unlnown --> nseindia-->time zone (local)

Mutual Fund: Type of quote Source --> Single--> India Mutual --> time
zone (local)

both the sources were working fine, prices were updating successfully
till 26-7-2023, but thereafter , they are not working.

3. I am using following version ( as it appears in help--> about menu of
GNU Cash)

Version : 5.3

Finance Quote : 1.57

I am using Window 10 home

I tried to install GNU cash on another laptop running on Windows 11
student, using the same account  file which I created on my computer (
xml), as well as creating nwe account and configuring the same way, but
still without success so far the finance quotes are concerned.

Before starting posting my regular accounts and suing the GNU cash at
production level for my accounts, I studied it detail, particularly the
finance quote and investment accounting, as one of the purpose of using
GNUcash over other software was to track my investment.

Hope above information is useful to you for anylsing the issue. Thanks
again a lot for your kind support and eagerness to hep me. Very much
appreciate,

With my best regards

Paras

[GNC] Stock assist does not post transaction, Finance quote does not update price

2023-08-02 Thread Paras Desai
I am from India.
When i try to post stock purchase transaction, even though i finish without
error, the transaction does not get posted.

It appears the stock assist features has more of cosmetic value than functional.

Since 26th the finance quote does not update price. When I press get quote
button, program runs without error but fails to update quote.

This is my second attempt to post the issue but without any reply.

Will any one pay attention and try to help me , or I have to give up!

Thanks in advance and in anticipation.

Paras
