Re: [GNC] Upgrading to 5.3 from 2.6.15

2023-12-04 Thread larry johnston
Hi,

I just had not scrolled down far enough.

If you deselect Include Collapsed Periods then you get the report for just
the month that you selected with the accumulated totals to the end of that
month. In that case the report seems fine. I am not sure there is a bug. To
get the equivalent of Phil's report I have to do 3 reports. A budget report
for the month without Accumulated Totals. A Budget report of the
month with Accumulated Totals and a Budget report for the year or the 12th
month with Accumulated Totals which will show me how much I have left to
spend or receive until the end of the year. It is a bit more cumbersome but
doable.

Thanks,

Larry

Possibly. I see that I filed it while using 5.3.

I don't recall exactly, but it might be in the Experimental folder, but
I'm uncertain.

In ver 4.14 I don't see any other options than Range Start and Range End,
maybe Collapsed Periods did not come until Ver 5 or maybe I am missing
something.

Re: [GNC] Upgrading to 5.3 from 2.6.15

2023-07-27 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Note, I did some testing this morning and it seems there might be a bug
in how the 'include collapsed periods after selected' works.

Follow along here or subscribe to the bug:
https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=799046

If this can be resolved, you should be able to get close, but not quite
to Phil's report.

The first set of columns would be the period of interest. You would
*not* want to use 'accumulated amounts' here if you want to see how that
period's actuals faired against that period's budgeted amounts.

The second set of columns (the subsequent collapsed periods) *should* by
necessity of being collapsed, show what is left, as YTD numbers.

The third set of columns would be Totals, which is for the entire budget
period.

Note, if the second set isn't quite what you are looking for, I'm not
sure you can duplicate that old report in one shot. In that case, you
would then simply only report on one period (and the Totals) and choose
either 'accumulated amounts' or not based on if you wanted numbers for
just that period *or* YTD as of that period. In which case, you can't
get both at the same time.

2023-07-26 Thread Adrien Monteleone

You should be able to get close.

You can see monthly periods, you can 'use accumulated totals' for each
month as they progress. (YTD) You can show a yearly 'Totals' column set.

For each set (period & total) you can see Budget, Actual, and Variance
columns.

I don't think it is exactly just 1 month, YTD, Total though.

But you might try playing with the Range & Consolidated options on the
General tab. So maybe set the range to 'current period' for a start,
'last period' for end, and then consolidate the periods after the
current one which should then show up as a single set of YTD type
numbers if using Accumulated Amounts. And then display a Totals column
and of course include Budget, Actual & Variance options.

Note too, you can customize the budget time frame itself. It doesn't
have to be an entire year. Maybe a combination of all of the above will
imitate Phil's report.

In Phil's old YTD report you could have a nine column report that showed
the current month, YTD and to the end of year, with the budgetted amount,
amount soent and the difference. That way you could see how you did vs your
budget in the month and year to date and how much you had left to spend to
the year end. I haven't been able to replicate that. Do you know if it is

There were certainly kinks in 5.0 and 5.1 in that regard,

It seems they have been fixed in 5.3, but then potentially new quirks
were discovered, or introduced there. (I might have found/confirmed one
myself which I don't like, but it isn't a deal breaker for me, just an
inconvenience.)

If you really are hesitant, just stay on 4.14 for now and keep an eye
out on this list for discussions around that and other topics that you
find of interest which reference changes in the 5.x series. Then make
the upgrade when ready.

The 'Accumulated Totals' preference is part of the Budget Report. Before
the introduction of this feature, you could only see each period (month)
in isolation, and a 'Totals' column, but that Totals column was for the
entire budget. So you could see your actual spending YTD, but the
variance was based on the entire year. (showing you how much you had
'left' in a budget, but not how you stood at that point in time.)

I find both Accumulated Totals, and the Totals column to be helpful when
understood what they report.

Re: [GNC] Upgrading to 5.3 from 2.6.15

2023-07-26 Thread larry johnston
I think we will stay in 4.14 for now.

We found the 'use accumulated totals' function under budget reports and it
gives us the basic information we need.

Do you know if it is
possible, or do you have any hints?

TIA,

Larry

Re: [GNC] Upgrading to 5.3 from 2.6.15

2023-07-26 Thread Adrien Monteleone

Good to know that you made it to 4.14.

As for which version of 5.x to land on, that's up to you.

Some folks aren't keen on the changes to the auto-fill for the
Description field. (I like it personally)

2023-07-26 Thread john
That sounds like the preferences didn't migrate. We had to change the GSettings
schema from org.gnucash to org.gnucash.GnuCash to get preferences to work
correctly in flatpak. We did that change in GnuCash 4.7, and there's a function
that's supposed to transfer your preferences to the new schema.

Can you open your files by navigating to them with File>Open? Have you modified
your preferences (via Edit>Preferences) from the defaults enough to motivate
you to try to recover them, and if so are you comfortable with using regedit?

2023-07-26 Thread Adrien Monteleone
That looks like GnuCash thought it wasn't opening your file, but
starting a new book.

How did you 'start' GnuCash *exactly* after the 4.14 install?

Also note, you can click Cancel on that first screen, or if it doesn't
show again, and you just get a blank app with either no book or a new
empty unsaved book, you can open your file via File > Open and
navigating to where you last saved it.

That should then clear it up and next time you open GnuCash, it should
remember where your book was and open it for you.

Then do the Check & Repair step once you verify you can open your book.

Adrien

This was only 1 part of the speedup: each typical (2 or more splits)
transaction was being scrubbed as many times as they have splits. This was
PR 1651.
The more significant speedup was to eliminate the xaccTransBegin/CommitEdit
before the scrub, and only call them if the transaction needed to be
scrubbed. PR 1654.

Sort of. There are a bunch of routines that we call "scrubs" that run at the
