RE: [GOANET] Konkani lessons in the GTA
-- Archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goa-net/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Goanet2003/ -- I think this subject has come up here before. Anyway, konkani classes were started here in the mid-80s under the late theatrist Richard Fernandes. I think for a start there were at least 20 people which dwindled down. The government had provided $800 for this but because of poor response the money had to be returned. Two years ago, a teacher (now retired) said she had recommended teaching konkani to students. The Catholic School Board had okayed the proposal provided there was a minimum number of students. But the efforts failed to enroll the required number and, hence, it never materialized. I attended the event where it was declared with Board officials present. My credit to the teacher (whose name I now forget) for trying. I don't want to sound negative. It would take lot of efforts to draw Goans, specially the young, to the classes. But it's worth a try after so many years. BTW, what's colloquial konkani? [GOANET] Re: Hindu customs deities - why no respect? (Part 2a)
-- Archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goa-net/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Goanet2003/ -- Just happen to read an essay, A Pioneer of Neo_Hinduism -- Bankim Chandra Chatterjee: 1838-1894. As many of us know, Bankim was author of Vande Materam. The current crop of Hindu fundamenlist look at him as a hero, though not taking into account that the Hinduism Bankim advocated was different from the traditional. The essay is by Rve. Fr. R. Antoine, S.J, in INDICA, a journal of the Indian Historical Research Institute, silver jubilee volume, 1953. The instite is the current Heras Instite at St. Xavier's College in Mumbai. Quoted is a para from Dr. S.Radhakrishnan, The Spirit of Man, Contemporary Indian Philosophy (1936). The para: I remember the cold sense of reality, the depressing feeling of defeat that crept over me, as a causal relation between the anemic Hindu religion and our political failure forced itself on my mind during those years. What is wrong with Hindu religion? How can we make it somewhat more relevant to the intellectual climate and social environmentof our time. Bankim undertook of reforming, regenerating and purifying Hinduism as to make it stand forth before the world as the noblest system of individual and social culture available to the Hindu even in this age of progress. As it was said that positivism showed Christianity as being anti-social, Bankim tried to use positivism to show the shallow, devoted to the other world and lacking humanism. No new Hindu regeneration born out of the political fires of the BJP and fanned by the RSS and other groups under the Sangh Parivar is a far cry from the Hinduism that an astute Hindu such as Bankim desired. Bankim wanted India to follow Krishna's humanism and not the Hinduism rooted in sacred scriptures such as the vedas. A India of such a nature would be a welcome relief to its citizenry instead of the saffron-coloured Hinduism propagated by the rulers and their bigoted followers. Eugene Correia __ Do you Yahoo!? [GOANET] dual citizenship
-- Archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goa-net/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Goanet2003/ -- Associated Press New Delhi - The Indian government will enact a new law to provide dual citizenship to nearly 20 million people of Indian origin who live abroad, newspapers reported Monday. The change in citizenship laws will be announced at a conference of people of Indian origin that begins in New Delhi later this week, Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani was quoted as saying in the Hindustan Times newspaper. People of Indian descent who are citizens of countries that allow residents to hold dual citizenship - such as Canada, the United States, Britain, and Australia - will be given preference, Mr. Advani said. People of Indian descent who take on Indian citizenship would be able to purchase and own property and real estate in India. However, they will not be allowed to vote or run for office. Because of security concerns, Indian citizenship will not be automatic but will be decided on an individual basis, Mr. Advani said. They will first have to apply and their application would be considered on the basis of reciprocity, he is reported to have said. The government will formally announce the changes in India's citizenship laws on Jan. 10 at an international celebration of people of Indian origin to begin Thursday in New Delhi. Around 1,500 people of Indian descent, mostly from the United States, Britain, the Caribbean and Southeast Asia, will participate. -- __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. -- What's On In Goa: * Oct 16-17: Ornithology workshop, Bondla southernbirdwing.com * Oct 16-27: Vipasana meditation, Alto Porvorim * Oct 24: Antonio Pereira Puraskar (Award) ceremony, Porvorim -- I attended Patricia Pinto's talk on civic issues in Goa, particularly Panaji. She informed that the People's Movement for Civic Action has been able to galvanize the citizens into activism and, hence, chances have taken place in Goa's civic culture. She spoke at length about the plastic-free Goa campaign, the issue of privatisation of Mira Mar beach, garbage collection and disposal in villages and cities, public hygiene, the problems in the red-light area of Baina, and the boom in residential construction in the cities. Patricia gave the credit to the 73rd and 74th Amendments to the Indian Consitution. The 73rd provides constitutional status to Panchayati Raj Institutions, and the 74th gives women one-third representation in any municipality, among other things. She admitted that she was elected from a seat reserved for women out of the total six in Panaji. One woman councillor was elected from the non-designated seat, bringing the total to seven out of 18. When I asked if 18 was not a high number for a small city such as Panaji, she shot back that Goa is small but has 40 MLAs. She was articulate. Her talk was punctuated with few jokes. Patricia noted that people have become aware of civic responsibilites and environmental consciousness. She said that the process has begun and there's a long way to make Goa a healthier and cleaner place. She also prasied worked done by Goa Foundation, and Goa DESC. As Edgar mentioned, there were not more than 25 people to hear her on a weekday. I was also surprised to see people who came to hear something on Goa as I had never seen these people at major events on Goan issues. Edgar was right that most of them were relatives and friend. Though Al Mathias, one of the office-bearers, if I may use the word of the International Goan Organization, remarked that Wednesday was a group prayer day and many Goans in Mississauga couldn't attend the talk. Some were spouses of the office-bearers in the IGO. In reality, there were just a couple of us with genuine interest in Goa In a way, I was also there for a major reason - to cover the event for the weekly paper I edit for South Asian in Toronto. I wrote an exhaustive report with a big photo of Patricia. If GoaNow is interested I can send the report and the photo. This home-based prayer group is a new phenomenon that has started in the Goan community. I was invited for it, but politely declined. He's right about the IGO in calling itmoribund. I would go further and add that it's an undemocratic body that is presided or ruled by Zulema de Souza. The IGO mayy I have a bias against the organization. As a matter of fact, I have written time and again against it, more so because of its structure and functioning, including a piece in the Opinion Page in Navhind Times on the opening day of the International Youth Conference held many years ago. To the best of my knowledge, IGO has a handful of members. I am told that membership is open and without any membership dues. I don't want to go into details here, but rather keep it for another day. [Goanet] Heeding the Mahatma's words
On Gandhi Jayanti, let's heed the Mahatma's words by Eugene correia Gujarat is once again at the top of the news, the kind of news one sitting in cozy Canada would not like to hear. Neither one would like to talk about it. If one at all wants to talk about it, one can only do with some shame. Shame for what we Indians are doing to each other in the name of religion and at the cost of national peril. Not that violence is new in India, more so religious violence that first and foremost resulted in splitting up the nation into India and Pakistan. The two big religious communities in India, Hindus and Muslims, seems to have not forgotten the bitter lessons of the partition when thousands of people from both communities died. Fifty-five years later we are still at it, provoked often by political motives and sometimes by sheer intolerance of each other. Whatever the reasons, they are not justified for the bloodshed that occurs now and then in the country. Each incident of religious violence demeans us both in the eyes of the international community and within out own hearts. Unfortunately, Gujarat happens to be the birthplace of the apostle of peace, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, revered by millions of Indians as Mahatma Gandhi and as Father of the Nation. On Oct. 2 we will once again celebrate Gandhi Jayanti, as we have often done since his death in 1948. We will praise his name and promise to abide by his principles, some of which may seem irrelevant in modern India. It's a matter of debate if Gandhi himself is relevant today, and Gandhism has lost its way in India. Gandhi said that religion and politics are non-separable. But he spoke about this relationship before India secured Independence. Scholars have said that Gandhi wanted the Muslims to be involved in the freedom struggle in a big way. He once said that the Hindu-Muslim problem is the problem of problems. His words seem prophetic till today. Gandhi always said he was a Hindu to the core, and he remained such till the end. He couldn't be called a secular person, as the term secular is understood today. He was said to be politically secular in the sense that he didn't make political distinction based on religious lines. He didn't want any religion to be a state-religion. The interplay of religion and politics is part of the history of India's fight for independence and as much as part of history of the Congress party, which was in the vanguard of the freedom movement. Neither could Gandhi be called communal, though he was a very religious person. It was later on that he realized that mixing both religion and politics was a powder keg. He admitted that religion is the personal matter which should have no place in politics. During the freedom struggle many socio-religious and socio-political issue came to the fore vis-à-vis Hindus and Muslims, such as music before mosques or cow-slaughter. The seeds of hatred sowed among both Hindus and Muslims by some leaders who wanted to exploit the religions sentiments of each group for their own political gains turned both groups into avowed rivals. Such behavior didn't help the nationalist cause, and we saw the result of what happened in 1947. Many historians such as Bipin Chandra and R.C. Majumdar have sought to understand and explain the cause of Hindu-Muslim enmity. Current historians and social and political scientists have tried to put the Hindu-Muslim question into perspective, but all their analysis have fallen on deaf ears. The political parties that fan communal passions are largely to be blamed for the antagonistic feelings running wild in India. Politicians, particularly those belonging to the motley crowd that forms the coalition government at the centre, blaming Pakistan for such dastardly acts are people with myopic vision. I dare not say that Pakistan is not a factor. Very much so, and India needs to do everything it's capable of to block Pakistan from playing any role in unstablizing India. There's so much talk about cross-border terrorism with regard to Kashmir. But the terrorism that happened in Gujarat is more of a threat to internal security that what's happening in Kashmir. Kashmir has been a flashpoint since Independence, and will remain so for a long time. Coming to Gandhi, he brought both Hindus and Muslims together when he launched his non-cooperation movement. Some historians have said that the unity displayed during this time was superficial. The communalists in both groups were taken aback at the coming together of Hindus and Muslims for independence. Gandhi's role in the Khilafat Movement is an example of how he worked his way into the hearts and minds of the Muslims and harnessed their energies towards the nationalistic cause. When communal riots broke out in pre-Independence India, the targets of attacks often were temples and mosques. One reads in history of the violence that rocked India in 1926 when Swami Shraddhanan was murdered by a Muslim. Commenting on the murder, Gandhi

[Goanet] Re: World Youth Day 2002 - Goanet
By Eugene Correia Tears were streaming from the eyes of many viewers when the lights came on at the end of the world premiere of Mother Teresa: The Legacy, a 55-minute long documentary, at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Canadian Exhibition Place (CNE), on July 24. The Petrie sisters, Ann and Jeanette, who produced and directed the documentary, received a standing ovation for the portrayal of the last days of the Nobel Prize winner who dedicated her life to the poorest of the poor in Kolkatta, and the footage of her state funeral. Present among the 1,300 invitees at the screening were Aline Chretien, wife of Prime Minister Jean Chretien, who represented Canada at the Mother's funeral. Seating next to Mrs. Chretien was India's Acting High Commissioner Parbati Sen Vyas. At least 20 nuns belonging to the Missionaries of Charity, the order founded by Mother Teresa, sat in the auditorium along with many priests. At least 15,000 participants at the World Youth Day saw the documentary projected on giant screen at Centennial Park in the CNE. Winner of numerous international awards, including two Emmy Awards, for their earlier film called Mother Teresa , which premiered at the United Nations in 1985 and was broadcast in more than 60 countries, the producers let Mother Teresa do most of the talking in the film. The theme of the screening event was Works of Love are Works of Peace, one of Mother Teresa's famous expressions. Speaking in monologues, the Mother explains why she in engaged in the service of the poor and offers sane advice on reducing the suffering of those less fortunate. She opens up her heart and her soul as images of her carrying sick infant children or holding the old and the dying in her arms flash on the screen. The film shows black-and-white photos of Mother Teresa's as a child and later when she became a nun. The funeral is very well captured and makes a lasting impression on the mind. The images of Mother Teresa lying in state, people in long line-ups to pay their last respects and the crying and sobbing of people from all walks of life in Kolkatta, are arresting. In an interview, Jeanette Petrie said she and her sister wanted to do this film because of the immense response they had received for their earlier work. We got exclusive permission from the sisters to shoot the funeral. We wanted to use this format as we wanted Mother to speak for herself on her spirituality that brought together Hindus, Muslims and people of other faiths. Jeanette explained at the end of the screening. She said that Mother had let them know that they should not add or subtract anything. We wanted to let the people know what happens behind the scenes. Mother Teresa had tremendous influence on my life, she added. The documentary is likely to be shown on some TV stations, but no dates were available. __ Do You Yahoo!? I don't know where she made the statement, either in The Toronto Star or at the Pope's lunch meeting. The documentary was very moving, with good coverage of the Mother's funeral. Re: [Goanet] Newspaper of Expatriates Goans.
I sometimes wonder where A.V. gets his facts from or if he has read enough of literation on India's liberation. Most historians agree that Krishna Menon wanted to take over Goa because of the forthcoming elections. He was contesting from North Bombay against a stalwart such as Acharya Kirpalani. It was one of the most watched fight. Menon persuaded Nehru to take the action. It has noted that Nehru wasn't in favour of taking Goa by force. Where the theory of Menon taking Goa to provide jobs for Malayalis originated, I am not sure. This is the first time I have heard it, but I hope it will be for the last time. There are other things associated with Goa liberation, but it not be neccessary right now. It's important to debunk theories such as those propagated by AV. Eugene Correia __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Note: forwarded message attached. __ Do You Yahoo!? Sign up for SBC Yahoo! Dial - First Month Free http://sbc.yahoo.com ---BeginMessage--- Dear Mr. Correia, I will no longer be posting to GoaNet. Maybe I did overeach myself in more ways than one. Just in clarification... I am still grateful for your levelheaded intervention in the earlier 'suspension' issue. If I spoke harshly against you recently it was just a natural reaction to you accusing me of having a 'split personality' and sending you unwelcome personal e-mail. The issue of personal e-mail, specially, could have been mentioned privately, I feel. My apologies for that outburst. With regard to the debate matter. Your sources obviously are misinformed. I am not a journalist or a reporter by any measure. My Almost-Live-Reports are just ridiculous figments of my overactive imagination. I just saw a contradiction in terms when journalists fight against censorship in one forum and accept censorship on another. The debate on censorship is as old as the written word. I do not want to go into that again. With my absence I am sure GoaNet will be 'buzzing with positive activity' again. Adios and thanks again. Cecil P.S. You need not worry. This is my last personal e-mail to you. Just to tie up loose ends as it were. = Message: 15 Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2002 08:33:13 -0700 (PDT) From: Eugene Correia [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Note to Cecil I must clarify what Paddy said. I didn't support Cecil but I just felt the whole issue was dragged on for too long. I thought maybe Cecil overeached himself and, on the other hand, the admin team was adamant to take him back for reasons the admin team explained. It was bit of a relief that the issue was buried and goanet was buzzing with positive activity. Till Cecil backtracked. Either you bury the hatchet, at least for a reasonable time or till one of the parties is provoked into counter-attack, or keep the issue going on till one of the paries tires out. What was achieved on goanet was a compromise but, sadly, it didn't last long. Cecil had assured he was going to play by the rules. Now he portrays me as a lackey of the High Command which, for him, is the admin team. Netters can judge for themselves if in my postings during the whole ugly episode I was doing it at the bidding of the High Command. It does show Cecil's personality when he privately thanked me for my efforts but on goanet he berated me. I'm no pop psychologist but I judge people by their dealings with me. Cecil can provoke me, and I do feel like hitting back. But I think it's not worth it. But on the issue of journalism ethics, censorship or any related matter, I'm ready to debate Cecil. Not on goanet but goajourno forum where it rightly belongs. Eugene ---End Message---

[Goanet] re: 4 questions for Margaret
Margaret Mascarenhas' replies to Cecil's 4 Questions are to the point. Here in Canada, columnists are given bigger scope to get their views to the readers. In recent cases, two columnists were fired because they wrote something that was unkindly to the ruling Liberal government. Similarly, the publisher of the Ottawa citizen Russell Mills, was fired. The firing of the publisher raised many questions, including mention in the parliament. It is learnt that the paper carried an editorial unfavourable to the prime minister who's a friend of the owners of CanWest, the group the owns Ottawa Citizen and many big papers across Canada. The publisher said he has right to fire his employers. But it has sparked a debate in the journalistic circles. Even the publisher of Canada's biggest paper, The Toronto Star, said the firing of such a senior journalist who spent more than three decades at the paper and is considered a disciplined journalist was wrong. But the group denied Mills' firing had anything to do with its friendship with PM Jean Chretien. Anyway, this has also raised the possibility of MPs demanding the governemnt set up an inquiry into media concentration. Another columnist, Ashok Chandwani, who incidentally is of Indian origin, was also fired from his long-time job at the Montreal Gazette. The details of his firing are sketchy. I have tried to contact him, but unable to do so till now. Similarly, Lawrence Martin, a respected columnist and biographer of the prime minister, lost his job at the National Post, another paper owned by CanWest. Here's an extract from another Indo-Canadian, Haroon Siddiqui, Emeritus Editorial Page Editor, of The Toronto Star, It is not size alone that has Canadians riled up. Rather it is the toxic brew of a vast empire run authoritatively by its owners. The Asper family of Winnipeg is violating Canada's cherished tradition of a free media. CanWest's 14 metropolitan dailies must carry head office-written editorials on issues close to the Aspers' heart, such as supporting the governments of Jean Chrétien and Ariel Sharon. The papers are also under orders not to editorially contradict those positions, eroding regional voices on those topics. CanWest staff contravene or criticize company policies at their peril. The firing of Ottawa Citizen publisher Russ Mills proved that, as also the earlier departures of Montreal Gazette publisher Michael Goldbloom, Halifax Daily News editor Bill Turpin and many columnists. CanWest has spawned a culture of fear and self-censorship among journalists. This has already translated into shamelessly one-sided coverage and commentary on the Middle East. News of controversies involving CanWest itself is routinely blacked out in company newspapers and TV stations. Or reported with a corporate spin. The erosion in the fundamental freedom of journalists to report without fear of intimidation has prompted calls for an inquiry into concentration of ownership and journalistic independence. Over lunch one day I asked Siddiqui why he didn't get the Managing Editor's job after he was the Editorial Page Editor and then shifted as Emeritus Editor, he told me that he prefers to be a columnist because it gives him a better opportunity to express his views instead of day-to-day running of a newspaper. I have read Margaret's column and I support her stand. I don't want to repeat what Margaret said in reply to Cecil 4 questions. I think I read on goanet either from Cecil himself or someone else that Cecil is a journalist or is involved with the media. That he doesn't understand the concept of censorship and it's application in journalistic practices surprises me. Mixing his own issue regarding goanet and Margaret's issue with GT, is nothing more than confusion compounded. In a recent post to goanet, he told me Ignorance is Bliss. In his case, it's so true. Re: [Goanet] 'Commercial posting' allowed for GoaNet Admin team
Hi Cecil, You started it again. You're really something. Keep to humour and let other things rest. What you say and what you do are totally different things. Maybe it's your split personality. Maybe we have just have to tolerate your. Or best, ignore you. I chose the latter. Frankly, I'm tired of you. HENCEFORTH, DON'T EVER SEND ME PERSONAL EMAILS. Eugene Correia __ Do You Yahoo!? [Goanet] Re:New GoaNet2 / Goa World News Mailing List
A email to me says that the Cecil-Goanet issue has been ended, and that's the good news. I had said in my earlier posts that I have no problems if other mailing lists or discussion groups pop up. But I have one problem with Uly's new list. It's the name that bothers me. Now Uly, you could have chosen any other name for your mailing lists instead of goanet2. For anyone not familiar with goan mailing lists, this could cause confusion. It definitely gives the impression that the new list was created because of the fallout between Uly, Cecil and their other friends and goanet admin team. As one issue is resolved, we now face another one. It could be nice for Uly and others not to create more friction. Though I have mentioned Uly, Cecil and other friends, I am not sure if Cecil and the others are with Uly or Uly has acted only. I believe Uly will continue to be member of goanet since he hasn't yet indicated he is going to leave goanet. Uly must exercise better wisdom and change the name to something else. Maybe he could invite suggestions for a name. If Uly continues with his new game, it would definitely give credence to what Marlon has been saying that there's conspiracy against goanet. Would Uly take the moral high road? Eugene Correia __ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [Goanet] Goans Making Headlines in USA.
I either read or was told that Dinesh is a Goan from Bandra, Mumbai. His father used to work for Johnson and Johnson. I know a woman in Toronto who knew the family as she too lived in Bandra. I was under the believe he is of East Indian origin. Eugene Correia __ Do You Yahoo!? [Goanet] Re: Whats on in Canada !
So much about Chrystal Gomes. Last year, sometime in October, I did a big feature on her in a local South Asian paper. She had invited me to her performance at a comedy club. I also did a small feature on her in India Today (international edition). She was happy. After that I got her to perform at the Miss Canada-India Beauty Princess pageant. I thought of sending the piece to GOANOW, but, as it often happens with journalists, I forgot. I have known her since she served for a brief time on the Goan Overseas Association executive committee in the 80s. She was young then, and still young. I have known her father, Danny Gomes, who has been president of GOA and a trustee. In fact, it was he who suggested to her to invite me for her show when we bumped into each other at the Viva Goa festival last year. She and I are in constant email communication. Coincidentally, she's from Colva, my village. She's a wonderful person. Two months ago I was passing by her house and called her if we could have dinner as I had an invitation at a newly-opened Indian-Chinese restaurant. She's couldn't as she had a show, but insisted I visit her house. It was my first visit to her place. Surprisingly, she had left a scotch bottle with her dad to give it to me. It's unfortunate that such a lovely person is stricken with MS, the dreadful disease. But she wants to use her own success to let the world know that the disease can be fought and a person can lead a normal life. She's an inspiration to lot of MS victims, particularly the young and the youth. Eugene Correia __ Do You Yahoo!? LAUNCH - Your Yahoo! [Goanet]Re: Recent trouble on Goanet
Herminator the Terminator has once again rise from his long sleep. Praise be to that. It's nice to know that his the chairman as in Chairman Mao. He isn't happy that the Goacom vs Goaworld tit-for-tat battle is fought on goanet. May I ask why shouldn't it fought on this forum? What's wrong with it. Goacom hosts goanet, and that's a given fact. That both goacom and goanet are autonomous is also a fact. But the issue is what went in the background. The goaworld team has alleged of some wrong tactics or unethical methods in doing some things to affect goaworld's image or work. So, in this context raising the issue on this forum is fair game. However, how long it should be played out and to what length each one must be allowed to attack or maling the other is a matter for the admin team to decide. Debates go on forever in some cases. It's for the admin team to say enough is enough. Herman's warning saya that those who want to split the Goan community has no place on goanet. Does anyone purposely want to split the goanet community? Hasn't other mailing lists branched off goanet and even other Goan discussion forums because some weren't comfortable with goanet? What did the admin team do in these cases? I wish Chairman Mao keeps his warnings to himself and goes back go sleep. In a way, thanks for waking up and making your presence felt on goanet as I has forgotten you still exists. Eugene Correia __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
