NEWS LETTER

30th January 2003

Dear Friend

Friday February 14th is the date to circle in your diaries. Friends of the
Orchestra present the GSSO for a magical evening of Romantic Classics for
Valentine's Day. The venue is The Grand Ballroom at the Goa Marriott Resort,
Panaji. The ticket price of Rs 250 is ALL INCLUSIVE and covers the concert
itself, together with light refreshments and a glass of wine after the
performance (courtesy of the Goa Marriott who are helping the Friends of the
Orchestra in their efforts). This is a fundraiser for the GSSO and all
ticket proceeds will go towards securing the future of the Orchestra. The
time is 7.00pm with doors closing sharp at 7.15. And it promises to be a
lovely evening with a very special programme. We are very grateful indeed to
the Marriott Hotel and especially to their General Manager Philip Spencer
for his help in supporting this cause.

We need more 'Friends' and sponsors like the Marriott, especially since, as
from January 2003 of this year, the orchestra is entirely reliant on
individual donations from well wishers, classical music enthusiasts. And
totally dependent on the hard work and efforts of the 'Friends of the
Orchestra' committee (who are all, incidentally, volunteers.)

Since we no longer receive government funding from the Kala Academy or
anywhere else we therefore need all the help we can get to support GSSO
concerts and to keep this, our tiny states very own orchestra, going.

No longer will 'Friends of the Orchestra' be able to afford to hold
performances at the Kala Academy (other than those already agreed) due to
the prohibitive costs of organising these particular concerts. We will be
concentrating instead on smaller select venues with live performances of
classical music in beautiful surroundings. Our concert programmes will be of
a thematic nature, so that each performance promises to be a unique and
enjoyable experience.

Please tell all your friends, visitors and neighbours about this very
special event and be there yourself on the 14th Feb. for "Romantic classics
on Valentines Day" to help this cause!

The venue only holds 300 people - so book early to avoid disappointment!

We look forward to having a glass of wine with all of you after the
performance.

Tickets are available at:

The Marriott Resort, Panaji. Telephone Lester on 246

Pedro Fernandes Music Shop, Panaji Tel.222 6642

Davlin Electronics (David Coxhill), Treasurer, Tel. 222 9537

£500 reward for informing on a drink-driver
11:39am Sunday, 15th December 2002

A £500 reward is on offer this Christmas to anyone who informs police of a
drink-driver.
The money is put up by Crimestoppers, the national charity set up to
persuade people to shop criminals via telephone tip-offs.
The group has launched a national campaign this Christmas so anyone who
phones police with information about a drink-driver can also give their
personal details to receive a reward.
Once a drink-driver is arrested, charged and convicted the cash will be
paid.
The campaign is being launched to try to cut road accidents over the festive
period.
The scheme was piloted last year but very few people who shopped drink
drivers claimed the cash.
Ron Jessup, vice chairman of the Campaign Against Drinking and Driving
(CADD), said: "Crimestoppers tried a localised scheme last year and I
understand it was quite successful so they have decided to go national."
Police this year have been cracking down with drink-drive campaigns, with
"morning-after" drivers particularly at risk.
Anyone caught over the legal limit faces a fine of up to £2,500, up to three
months in prison and a lengthy ban.
About 600 people are killed each year and many more injured by
drink-drivers.

[GOANET] ' A Pilgrimage of the Heart' cont . part 2

2002-12-02 Thread rbarreto

Goa's phone numbers change from Nov 10, 2002. Prefix old number with a 2. New numbers
will be seven-digit 2XX (where XX is the old number).

cont - A Pilgrimage of the Heart

'A Pilgrimage of the Heart' is meant to be what its name indicates:
a journey that engages the heart into contemplation of the person
and message of Jesus, the great Pilgrim, and of two of the persons
he touched deeply, two persons close to the heart of Goans---
St. Francis Xavier who journeyed from Spain to distant Goa and
other Asian lands, and Blessed Joseph Vaz, a son of Goa( now revered
as the Patron of the Archdiocese ), who was irresistibly drawn, over
a century later, to Sri Lanka . These three Pilgrims walk with the visitor
and share with him or her some of the concerns that motivated them. The
programmeuses a 'physical time' of exactly one hour, within which
it tries to telescope through the centuries the salient moments in the
life and vision of Jesus and these two men who followed in his footsteps.

The stories are told through a wide range of media, from the traditional
Goan terracotta and Portuguese 'azulejo' to the modern fibreglass and
Plaster of Paris and experimental use of copper scrap; modern
electronic and digital media work together with timeless arts like painting,
sculpture and 'painting in thread' to weave a unique tapestry with many
surprises.

Original compositions and traditional melodies form part of a vibrant
musicalbackground, provided by Leon D'Souza of Mumbai, enriching
a presentation that moves through many times, cultures and styles.
All this in a rare location : a floor of an ancient Casa Professa,
now turned from a long neglected "bats' room" to the welcoming
site of a spiritual journey.

A number of reputed artists, including Mario de Miranda,
Subodh Kerkar, Querozito D'Souza and LieslCotta D'Souza,
Zilu Harmalkar, Dominic Cordo,Sadashiv Kunkolienkar,
have worked to giveshape to this unique project, which was executed
under the competent artisticdirection of Francisco Martins.
Ray Kancharla, a media professional from Delhi, experienced in
Son-et-Lumiere productions, was the consultantfor the Archdiocese,
while Arch. Dean D'Cruz and Eng, Silvester D'Souza were the
experts consulted about the structural work.

All the world loves a good story. 'A Pilgrimage of the Heart' narrates its
story in Konkani, English and Hindi, and the group of fifteen who enters
the Gallery can have the language of its choice. Moreover, a Coffee
Shop at the end of the 'trip' offers some refreshment and a choice
of mementosrelating to the programme.

The offering at the entrance is only Rs. 10 to be accessible to every
visitor. However, the Gallery needs to cover a numberof overheads
and maintenancedoes not come cheap. This is indeed a unique project,
one of its kind in India, one that Goans and others will thoroughlyenjoy
and remember for a long time. The Archdiocese hopes that visitors to Old
Goa will make it a pointto spend this one hour at the Sound and Light
Gallery.

Also, to assist in defraying recurring costs , the management would welcome
(and be grateful for!!!) contributions from generous donors.

(This post is being made in two parts to fulfill the requirements of
Goanet. )
Goans and Friends of Goa ,
As many of you will be visiting the the Basilica of Bom Jesus at Old Goa
today , tomorrow and in the coming days , I d like to share the experience
with you of my visit to the' The Pilgrimage of the Heart', in March this
year at the invitation of my friends Francisco and Nanda Martins , on
that visit we met Fr.Loiola , a member of the Core Team that worked on
' The Pilgrimage of the Heart', who showed us around the beautiful
setting. The setting is in the Casa Professa, adjoining the Basilica.

I will now allow Isabel Santa Rita Vas , who is also with The Mustard Seed
Theatre Group, based in Panjim -- to introduce you to this
" Sound and Light Gallery "

The Sound and Light Gallery at the Casa Professa, Old Goa.
 A Pilgrimage of the Heart.

Thousands of visitors ( pilgrims and tourists ) visit the Basilica of Bom
Jesus at Old Goa through the year. They are usually ushered to the
mausoleum where the sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier lie,
and sometimes a tourist guide gives them a few details about the history or
the architectureof this beautiful site. They may take a few photographs
and perhaps buy a curio or two to remind them of their visit. However,
should they wish to know more about this man , venerated as a Saint of
the Church, or about the religious tradition within which he lived and
worked, or about the person of Jesus who inspired him where does
such a visitor turn? For a long time, a need was felt to make available to
the casual visitor as well as the pilgrim a glimpse into the life of St
Francis, whom Goans love and venerate with a very special devotion.

Today, this need is met by a colourful and artistic presentation in
Son-et-Lumiere, entitled 'A Pilgrimage of the Heart'. The Gallery that
houses it adjoins the Basilica, ( on the ground floor of the Casa Professa)
so that, in a way, the ' Pilgrimage' flows straight from the visit to the
sacred relics of the Saint. It was undertaken by the Archdiocese of
Goa and Daman, under the initiative and leadership of the Auxiliary
Bishop Filipe Neri Ferrao. It took over two years to complete
and is the fruit of the collaboration of a large team of artists, and
technical experts. Since the Papal Nuncio was visiting Goa on the
date of the Feast of St Francis Xavier, he was specially requested
to bless the Gallery at a private function on 3rd December 2001.
Many outstanding details were then completed and the 'Pilgrimage'
was thrown open to the public on 1st May 2002.Since then,
numerous visitors to Old Goa have been quite astonished
and delighted at what awaits them at the Gallery.

dedicated to emperors and queensbut has towering churches signifying hold of
religion over political power, during their construction.Dr
Kamat, stressing on the fact that uncontrolled tourism and unplanned
development could be detrimental to the society, stated that linking heritage

[GOANET] This first ever Konkani Christmas Pantomime

GCS KONKANI PANTOMIME
Written & directed by Mike Alfonso

Christmas is here again, and as part of the British tradition and culture,
Christmas Pantomimes are staged all over UK. Most if not all the pantomimes
are based on Fairy Tales and also include a few Christmas songs. The
setting is just like our Konkani Tiatrs.

The Goan Cultural Society UK will host its Annual Christmas Party for the
cast, helpers and their families on 1st December this year. The GCS
Committee decided to embrace a little bit of British culture, and will
include a Christmas Pantomime in the party. That's not all, the Pantomime
will be in Konkani and will star the GCS Children.

The GCS Committee made this suggestion to the team, and Mike Alfonso of the
legendary Alfonso brothers took on this challenge. Within a few days, Mike
wrote his own version of CINDERELLA.

We had to work fast, time was limited and the children were all busy with
school work, but with the help of the parents we managed to have just over
four rehearsals. Once again our confidence in the Goan children has been
proved. They have a lot of talent and if given the chance, will prove
beyond doubt that hey are second to non.

This first ever Konkani Christmas Pantomime, includes only two adults, Ida
D'Souza as the mother and Johnny Alfonso as Fr. Johnny. The three sisters
are Lucinda Pereira, Caesarea Alfonso and Cianna Rodrigues. Mirose Alfonso
plays the part of Cinderella. The three potential grooms are
Adrian Alfonso, James Fernandes and Sean Furtado. In addition there will be
a sing along of Christmas Carols. Music
will be provided by Chilliboy and Camilo.

There will be a repeat performance for the public at 3.00pm on 7th December
2002 at St Johns Hall, Bourne Hill, Palmers Green, London N13. For tickets

Cont ...from 1.

The Tiatr was replete with a rich repertoire of
songs , most of which were based on topical issues, ranging from terrorism
to Goa. This varied fare was well received by the audience. The live music
accompaniment - Mr.A D'Mello on Saxophone, Mr. Mario Fernandes on the
Guitar ,Francis Rodrigues on the Bass, Mathew Fernandes on the Keyboards
and Mathias Sequeira on the drums-enlivened and injected a festive
atmosphere into the hall.A song on the legendary Chris Perry by Cassey ,
Anthony and Xavier ( Alphonso Bros.) was much appreciated. Popular artist
and Fantasy Band leader from Goa, Connie M, who was in the UK around
the time won the hearts of the people with his two beautiful songs.
Rev.Fr.Oliver Antao who sang a touching song on priests received a
thunderous ovation. Amongthe others, who entertained the gathering
by their renditions were A.Perry
,
Damaciano and Ida D Souza, Paxiao, Larry Boy , Zeferino , Tony , Anthony
and Felix Gonsalves. The acts on stage were enhanced by brilliant light
effects, managed by Simon Fernandes. The were further supplemented with
song specific scenes and pictures of Goa and other places which were
effectively handled by Jayson Goes. The sound system was provided by
Mr.Gregg Carvalho and the stage managed by Mr.Caetano Braganza.

Earlier , the meet was addressed by Fr.Oliver Antao sfx,Asian Chaplain of
the the Archdioceses of Southwark and Westminster in London. He
congratulated the hosts for putting up the splendid show and complimented
them for their efforts in keep the heritage of Goa , alive in the land of
their domicile . He reminded those present, that only we,the sons and
daughters of Konkani, can give our mother tongue its due and identity, and
called for the whole hearted support in preserving and promoting the unique
art and culture of Goa,amongst the Goan diaspora . In this connection ,
it was decided to rename the nascent organization as 'The Goan Heritage-
UK 'in order to broaden its scope and reflect its aims of fostering the
Goan identity through Art,Dance,Drama,Music and Language.

The director Mr.Lawrence Mascarenhas then profusely
thanked the people for their support and encouragement , and further
promised to stage a few more shows in and around London and UK.,
yielding to the popular demand.

Friends ,

I am re-posting this report in two sections -
as I believe the original post exceeded the allowed limit.

thanks

rene

The jam packed gathering of Goans at Willesden School Hall ,
North London was offered a rare and refreshing treat,in the form
of a Tiatr on Sunday 27th October 2002.

The Tiatr was staged by a group of young Goans ,calling themselves as the
Youth of Goa (UK ), and was written and directed by Lawrence Mascarenhas ,
hailing from Betalbatim in Salcette, Goa.

The show was a great success , with the tickets having been
sold out much in advance. Even the inclement weather of the day did not
dampen the
spirits of Goans nor deter them from attending the show. A few who had made
it,
braving the rain and the high -speed winds had to goUK back disappointed
for
want of tickets. It is to the credit of the organizers , that people were
seen remaining seated , much after the show was over, as if expecting some
more fare ! The downside of it , however was the delay in commencing the
show on time although one can fully appreciate and understand the
difficulties
faced by them in putting up such an event in a foreign land. However it is
hoped , that
they would lay a little more emphasis on this aspect , whilst organizing the
next stage.

The Tiatr named 'ASRO' meaning shelter , is set in
a Goan household. The story revolves around a respectable and elder
citizen , patrician Mr Caldeira , who suddenly finds himself abandoned by
his two prosperous sons ,in his attempt at securing a sum of Rs..5 lakhs
towards the heart operation of his only daughter . The play reaches its
climax
with the prodigality of his two sons.

Rosita Pereira and Jimmy Braganza who played the lead roles as the son
and the daughter in law, respectively, captivated the crowd by their superb
performance and melodious voices. They were ably backed by Cassey
Alphonso, who acted as the younger son, Estelle asthe only daughter ,
Ubaldo as the businessman friend and Lawrence as hapless father.
The comedy - trio of Santano,Judith Pacheco and Antonioexcelled in their
roles. The threesome kept the people in peals of laughter by their
wisecracks
 and stage antics.

 Goan English Fiction Writers

By Cecil Pinto

Last month I decided to do a little research on Goan
Fiction writers (in English only - no translations)
who are featured somewhere on the Internet.
An excellent place to start is at
http://www.colaco.net/writers.htm. The menu reads like
a Who's Who of contemporary Goan writers.
Unfortunately most of the writers featured are
'unclickable' as the site is still in the
construction stage. Also most of the writings archived
are essays or viewpoints of an 'activist' nature,
rather than the pure fiction I was searching for. I
also stumbled on an interesting archive of short
stories and 'time pass' writings at
http://www.goa-world.net/magazine/.

After many hours of searching and browsing I have
narrowed down to these few writers

Lino Leitao (born 1930) grew up and did his education
in Goa before moving to Canada. His stories have been
published both here ('Xemai' was serialised by Goa
Today) and abroad, and his recent novel 'The Gift of
the Holy Cross' was well received. Leitao's writings
are characterised by his strong Goan roots and
upbringing. An interview with Frederick Noronha is
archived at
http://www.goa-world.net/magazine/soulofgoans.htm
(E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED])

Ben Antao (born 1935) grew up in Goa and this is
evident in his writings. Antao has been a journalist
in Bombay and Goa before migrating to Canada in
1967, where till recently he taught and was also a
financial planning consultant. Antao's self published
book 'Images of Goa' is not easily available, but he
is currently wrapping up another novel which will soon
be published. A decent selection of Antao's writings
are archived at
http://www.colaco.net/1/ben.htm
(E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED])

Victor Rangel-Ribeiro (born 1925), currently living in
New York, shot to fame when he received the Milkweed
Prize for fiction for his first novel 'Tivolem', set
in Portuguese Goa. Rangel-Ribeiro, in his varied
career, has been the literary editor of The
Illustrated Weekly and music director of
the Beethoven Society, New York. Last year
Rangel-Ribeiro conducted a Creative Fiction Writing
workshop in Goa on behalf of The Navhind Times at the
International Centre, Dona Paula. Lengthy extracts
from 'Tivolem' are available at
http://theliteraryreview.org/tlrsu-vr.htm
(E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED])

Margaret Mascarenhas (born 1960) is a consulting
editor, columnist and novelist, and the author of the
best-selling novel 'Skin'. Of Goan origin,
Mascarenhas grew up in Venezuela, went to college in
the US and currently divides her time between Goa and
California. Till recently she used to write an well
read newspaper column 'Wake up and smell the coffee'.
Mascarenhas is the only Goan writer I have come
across, who has a comprehensive website with her
biography and samples of her writing at
http://mmascgoa.tripod.com/. Mascarenhas is currently
working on her second novel 'Passion Fruit'.
(E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED])

Heta Pandit (born 1954) is well known in Goa for her
work as a heritage conservationist. Her book 'Houses
of Goa' brought her to the attention of the
international media as a writer. Pandit's recent book
'Dust and other short stories from Goa' has proven her
forte as a splendid fiction writer
too. An entire short story from 'Dust' is archived at
http://www.goa-art.com/gallery/Heta/snakeman.htm
(E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED])

Peter Nazareth (born 1940) is of Goan origin and
European, African and American domicile. Currently
Nazareth is Professor in African American World
Studies and the Department of English at the
University of Iowa, USA.
In addition to a vast anthology of work - primarily
revolving around the African peoples' socio-economics
and politics, Nazareth teaches a popular course 'Elvis
as Anthology' which has been given a lot of media
attention.
An excellent biography of Nazareth can be found at
http://www.goacom.com/culture/biographies/mprofile.html#4

(E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED])

Lambert Mascarenhas (born 1914) strides the world of
Goan fiction writers like a colossus. Founder editor
of The Navhind Times, founder editor of Goa Today,
author of the best selling 'Sorrowing Lies My Land'
(in its fourth reprint) and 'In the Womb of Saudade'
(a collection of short stories). Mascarenhas continues
his excellent writing in the local Goan press on
issues that effect us all. Mascarenhas resides in Dona
Paula. An excellent essay by Mascarenhas 'The Enigma
that is Goa' is available at

[GOANET] News round up from all over the GOANWORLD.

2002-11-06 Thread rbarreto

A News round up from all over the GOANWORLD. This one comes from -GSSO - 'Friends of the Orchestra' in Goa I have pleasure in sharing with you a News letter from Carole - of GSSO - 'Friends of the Orchestra' in Goa , please take some time to write to the organistion encouraging them on the work they do . Please support them in any way you can , your support will be OUR Success. rene barreto NEWS LETTER 6th November 2002 Dear Friend A belated newsletter which I'm sure you will forgive. The 12th October concert went well despite all. Thanks to 'Friends' who came to our rescue when the Kala Academy pulled out (we discovered later due to a cash crunch). They were unable to meet the costs of the performance. So thank you 'Friends' from the orchestra for your help (receipts & acknowledgements following shortly). We now have a small action committee so hopefully Nigel and I won't have to fight these battles on our own. You can imagine how much hair we both lost when we were left in the lurch three days before a concert! The Action Committee is made up of people who are giving of their time and expertise. I am especially grateful to Pia Rinaldi who has joined me to help raise sponsorship, to David Coxhill who is our treasurer and. Celina Andrews (Maestro Figuiredo's daughter). At our first meeting it was decided to hold a special concert as a 'thank you' to 'Friends' who have helped sponsor the orchestra. Amounts of donations will be kept private but we feel that a special event, say in an old Portuguese house or another lovely location as a big thank you would be great. The month of May will be the GSSO's first anniversary so we were thinking of this date. If any of you have other suggestions please do let us know as this event is especially for you. The next concert is November 16th at The Chapel on the Mount, Old Goa. Tickets are limited so please contact the Fundacao, Panjim ASAP. After the experiences we have had dealing with unprofessional organisations it is a real joy to deal with the Fundacao Oriente; their publicity is so beautifully designed and the venue is exactly what the orchestra needs. We have been looking forward to this concert since May when they asked the GSSO to participate and we are hoping that more bookings will result from this one. The more concerts we can give in lovely locations like this, organised by other people, the better as we are not in the event management business and want to concentrate on the music which is getting better and better all the time. November 16th should be a magical experience - when we stood outside the Chapel the other day and looked at the glorious view, just white churches and trees, not a concrete building in sight, I know this is the Goa we have in our hearts and see in our minds - wherever we may be in the world. Hope to see some of you there! Best wishes Carole GSSO - 'Friends of the Orchestra' Administration address: 'Arcadia', Ho. Caring & Sharing in Unity
September-December 2002

Dear Members

All's well that ends well!

The tremendous success of the 3rd East African Goan Convention held in
Nairobi 23rd to 25th August, 2002 is the result of several months of hard
work and planning by a Team fully committed to achieving this goal!

Our pride and joy was to see so many Goans from East Africa gathered
together in Nairobi in a show of friendship and togetherness. A measure of
our success is the numerous congratulatory messages and acknowledgements
that have been received from many of the participants and more interestingly
from those who simply could not make it, from within the East African region
and abroad.

On the basis that, "Individuals play the Game but Teams win Championships" -
the entire Goan Community of Nairobi should be proud to have won the hearts
and admiration of so many - that's our trophy! So much was done by so many
to realize success and I wish to express my sincere thanks and appreciation
to them all.

To my committee, the sub-committee heads, the convention coordinator and the
numerous teams of helpers and volunteers for their individual support,
dedication and commitment in working tirelessly for long hours to ensure a
successful Convention. Thank you all for the Team-work and Team-spirit. You
did us proud!

To the numerous host families who shared the warmth of their homes with some
of our guests, Dev Borem Korum to you all.

To the numerous advertisers and well-wishers, I thank you very much for your
support in the Convention Souvenir brochure.

We would not have been able to host the Convention in Nairobi successfully,
were it not for the cordial support and co-operation of the NAIROBI
INSTITUTE and the GOAN GYMKHANNA. To the Chairmen, the Management and the
entire Membership of these two great Goan Clubs of Nairobi, the Goan Welfare
Society thanks and salutes you for your unreserved support during the
Convention.

Finally, my thanks go to the Goans of Nairobi for attending the Convention
activities and for being such wonderful hosts to our guests from Mombasa,
Kisumu, Kitale, Eldoret, Kampala, Tanga, Arusha, Moshi, Dar es Salaam and
Zanzibar. I apologize to those whom we had to disappoint by turning down
their entry after the closing date. You will appreciate that accommodating
and catering for 480 Goans was no small task.

To all who made this an enjoyable and self-funded Convention, thank you.

Jack de Souza
Chairman - G. W. S.

PAST EVENT:

The last few months were characterised by lots of activity and excitement.
Some highlights:

PICNIC:

On 4th August 2002 GWS organised a picnic at the White Water Rafting Base of
Savage Safaris, a beautiful site on the banks of the Sagana River 90 Kms
from Nairobi. All who came had a great time! A biriyani lunch and dessert
were provided for over 150 people, and Johnny Rodrigues donated great
tasting homemade wine. There were games for the young and old; the GWS took
the opportunity to introduce the East African Goan Convention scheduled for
later in the month.

GOA DAY MASS:

Goans around the world celebrate their heritage during Goa Day, an event
held on an annual basis toward the end of August. On 17th August 2002 the
Nairobi Goans celebrated Goa Day with Holy Mass held at the Goan Gymkhana.
It was an enjoyable evening service, marked by Fr. Wilfred's humorous but
thought provoking sermon, wonderful singing from the choir and young Merwyn
Goes sang the Besaum. Guests were later treated to gram and a delicious
dinner with cocktails, sorpatel and sannas, and desserts all donated by
well-wishers. The Goan Gymkhana looked so much like Goa with whispering
palms and lights, and candles and balloons floating in the swimming pool.
Nairobi Goans now look forward to the next Goa Day.

GWS also took this opportunity to register almost 276 people for the EAGC
that evening.

Please support them in whatever way you can.

26th September 2002

Dear Friend

Time passes so quickly nowadays - we judge it by how many rehearsals are
left before our next performance and there never seem to be enough time! The
12th of October is the date to make a note of in your diaries, as the GSSO
will be performing at the Kala Academy. The programme will include works by
Corelli, Bach and a wonderful suite of dances by a composer called Peter
Warlock. The orchestra members say the pieces are great fun to play. It's
the first time we think they have been performed in Goa so it should be a
very interesting performance on the 12th.

This particular concert is all the more special since we were recently
contacted (via a third party, Colin Da Cruz,) by the late Daniel Pearl's
(the journalist) father and asked if we could take part in The Daniel Pearl
music day which will feature world-wide performances on the reporters
birthday, Oct 10th. This is part of a series of musical events to promote
Pearl's message of global harmony. Daniel himself was a talented violinist,
fiddler and mandolin player and Bach and Brahms were amongst his favourite
classical composers. Nigel agreed most happily to dedicate the 12th of
October concert to Daniel's memory. 'Friends of the Orchestra' are also
broadcasting a classical music programme on Sunday 6th October at 2.30 in
the afternoon on the FM stereo service (105.4) of All India Radio. On this
programme we will promote the GSSO's 12th October concert and highlight
performances taking place in Mumbai for the music day itself on the 10th
October as well as play some of his favourites. This concert is of
particular interest to me, being a freelance writer and broadcaster and it
has a very special meaning for journalists. As well as everyone who hankers
after global peace.

We would like to welcome some more 'friends' who have offered support to the
GSSO: these are Eric Pinto, Dr. Julian & Mary Gonsalves, Noel & Sher O'
Brien, Prava Rai and Gaston Eben. After the last performance 'Friends of the
Orchestra' were able to pay all the players a performance fee. They were
thrilled to bits! The orchestral players are really beginning to feel that
they are part of something where they have a future. It's just as well we
took matters into our own hands since the Kala, who booked the 13th August
concert in the first place, still haven't paid the players for the
performance due to some bureaucratic error on their part which they assure
us they will rectify before the next concert! Anyway keep your fingers
crossed for the next performance on the 12th October.
With God's help - the orchestra is working - slowly but surely.

To sponsor the GSSO or for clarification on any points, please do email us
at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hope to meet some of you at our future performances!

All the best

Carole Lobo Dixon

I am so very pleased to share with Goans world wide - a post
which I recieved from Sylvia Pires -the Hon. Secretary
Goan Welfare Society, Nairobi.

WORLD GOA DAY .

Sorry for the delay in making this post on this forum , I ve

Thank you

Dear Rene,

The Goa Day Mass celebrated by the Goans in and around Nairobi was nothing
short of a success in bringing people together. It has been a long time
since we've seen over 250 Goans together. Thank you for giving us the
opportunity to celebrate being Goan! And also keeping us so well informed
about Goa Day and other events of interest.

Below is a small write up on what happen that day and I am also cc the
organising committee who put this great event together. The idea of the
mass was Joyce Shamsudhin, and later bringing to life was achieved through
the team efforts of Jane De Souza, who headed the Goa Day Mass - Johnny
Rodrigues and Cheryl De Souza. The food from the traditional grams to
cocktails and sorpotel & sannas and desserts was donated by well wishers.

Kind Regards,

Sylvia Pires
Hon. Secretary
Goan Welfare Society, Nairobi

HAPPY GOA DAY

It was a grand evening on the 17th August 2002. From Museum Hill one could
see a myriad of cars in the Goan Gymkhana car park. Walking into the club
guests were greeted by the warm lights of the club, the beautiful sound of
the choir singing Kokani hymns. The celebrant, Fr. Wilfred De Souza gave a
humorous and thought provoking sermon about the origins of Goa Day and our
heritage and tied it well into the sermon about our Christian faith. Young
Mervin Goes gave a fine rendition of the Besao (Blessings) for the East
African Goan Community composed by Philu De Souza. The mass ended with all
congregants singing international song "Proud to be a Goan" with re-written
version of lyrics by Egid Barretto (Mombasa).

After the mass the 250+ Goenkars received the traditional grams and entered
into the pool area. The whispering palms and warm candlelights floating in
the pool created an ambiance of being in Goa. The guests were treated to
delicious cocktails followed by sorpotel and sannas, mutton mince, fruit
salad and ice cream donated by well-wishers.

The evening was made complete music and feni.

Every Goan who attended this first Goa Day celebration in Nairobi truly
enjoyed the evening and look forward to the next Goa Day.

Viva Goa!
