How did we allow one of those Nigerian scam artist's
appeal letter get published on GoaNet ?
I have been inundated with appeals from various
official sounding Nigerians, appealing to one's greed,
where if one is dumb enough to give them one's account
number or forward some money, they will get a bounty
worth millions of dollars. Now they have penetrated
GoaNet. We may consider Goa corrupt, but we are
definitely out of the league when compared to the
corruption in Nigeria.
Well YEAH ! Unfortunately, a sucker is born every day
and someone may be dumb enough to take the bait. I
hope the management of GoaNet can filter such nonsense out.

2003-08-28 Thread Miguel
Dear Netters,

How can the people who stand by the truth be said to 'have muddied the
issue' with respect to Edgar calling Fred 'mediocre'? An apology from Edgar
would have 'cleared' the turbidity. Who is he to suggest what Fred should
do? Did he consult Fred when he gave a cheque book to his CA ? or when he
filed a complaint with the police without any evidence to back it up?

But Goans as usual have caught the bull by the tail. Is Edgar claiming to
be a *non-Goan* or an *outsider* ? If not, does the tail he is holding belong
to a cowand that makes him different from the *other*Goans?

Cheers ;))

Laxman like many on Goa net who pander to individuals have muddied the
issue about criticism of Fred. In the first case, Fred posted an article
regarding Sikhs and their international achievements. I objected to this as
it as goanet requests its members to stick to the subject of Goa. I do not
subscribe to Sikh-net. He does in a subtle manner admit to his misleading
posting.

. The reasons are that he does not wish to lock horns with the political
bosses in Goa. Aiyres Rodrigues often does what Fred should.

I too know Fred and have been to his place. I appreciate his

No one was asked to solve a problem that is outside their capacity. *But

Re: [Goanet]Re: Soglleanche randni kodde tench bannxirem!

2003-08-28 Thread Rui Collaco
No, I do not forget that Goa entered the age of democracy before Portugal.
God forbid, it would be a mortal sin to forget such a major event of world,
rectius, universal history. Besides, how could one forget such a recurrent
boast made on Goanet? I am only too aware of it. I am also aware that Goa
has come a long way since entering that golden age. It has perfected its
democracy to such levels that known criminals get elected to the highest
offices of the land. Members of the Legislative Assembly change parties the
moment they are promised a seat in the next Govt., thus toppling the Govt.
they were supposed to support! It is called defection, that unique feature
of Indian democracy (political version of defecation). Governments last only
a few months, on average. Politicians invariably leave office far richer
materially than they were when they took office. So advanced is Goa's
democracy that one could describe it by its equivalent names (used only for
advanced forms, democracy being the designation for its simple and basic
form like the one praticed in Portugal) : mobocracy, moneycracy, plutocracy,
goondacracy, etc.

I have to humbly acknowlege that Portugal has a long, long way to go to
catch up to Goa's amazingly high level of development of its democracy. And,
alas, as much as I try, I don't see things heading in the direction they
took in Goa. It is a case-study of an ex-colony ouperforming the former
colonial ruler!!!

By comparison, Portugal's democracy has achieved little: this year we are
23rd in the Human Development Index Rank of the United Nations (Human
Development Report-2003), banded with the most developed countries of the
world in the High Human Development bracket.

But that's nothing compared to the fact that Goa entered democracy before
us. I have to learn to live with that.

I wish to assure you that I do not waste any energy to help the future of
Goans and their identity, for twol reasons:
- I am not a Goan, I am a Portuguese citizen (since birth) of Goan origin
(and proud of it);
- The identity of Goans (specially that of the catholics), the distinct
identity that J. Nehru spoke about, is all but vanished already.

I never heard about the alma portuguesa I know a different version:
A minha Pátria é a língua Portuguesa, which was said by the great poet
Fernando Pessoa, who wrote in Portuguese and in English, and means My
Fatherland is the Portuguese language.

I have read the article. So what? What are you trying to prove Mr.
Souza?
Can anyone draw conclusions from the fact that an anonymous citizen
makes
some criticism regarding the conservation….Anyone interested can check
on the very interesting work carried out by Portuguese institutions in
the restoration of the Fort
of São João Baptista de Ajudá (west coast of Africa) and on the
Portuguese
fortifications in Morocco. These are just 2 examples, there's a lot
more.
……….
The writer of the article has a name, and as such is not *anonymous*
(if I understand the dictionary meaning right). She is a researcher on
themes relating to conservation. Perhaps, what Mr.Rui Colaço meant to
say is *insignificant* or *selective informer* ! One wishes Mr.Rui
Colaço did a better job than renting and fuming on Goanet! Could give us
more comprehensive picture (and be less selective himself )by disclosing
who had destroyed the Fort of Ajudá in the first place! And to stop
being selective it is not enough to say “there’s a lot more”.
*apparently* hate so intensely, betraying yourself, your ideals and
your
fellow Portugal-haters. …..
Criticism, even when crude or hard, is translated as *bashing* or
*hate*, Mr. Rui Colaço is perhaps still suffering from the hangover of
the Salazar regime and its half a century of culture of censorship!
Fortunately, the Portuguese, sepcially the younger generation, are
getting over it.
Mr. Rui Colaço should not forget that Goa entered the age of democracy
at least a decade of years before 25 of April of 1974! Perhaps Goanet
will have to see more renting and fuming following this reminder!
I couldn't understand your Konkani proverb and I do not intend to take
and Konkani classes.
What a pity to hear this from someone who wastes so much energy to help
the future of Goans (and their identity)! The Portuguese believe
ardently that *Alma portuguesa é a lingua portuguesa* [Portuguese soul
is the Portuguese language] That should be true of Goans as well? It is
not without sense the other goan proverb: Chodd firangi bhas, haddank
urta mas.

[Goanet]Re: SINQUERIM NEEDS PROTECTION

2003-08-28 Thread Miguel
Dear Plant/Heritage Lovers,
Environmentalism is not just about planting trees.A tree protected has more
value today than a seedling that will grow into a tree twenty years hence.
We have to protect while we plant, simply because we cannot live in the
future or in the past...the present is ours!
Sinquerim is going to be a part of the GIFF--the Goa International Film
Festival. GIFF is a gift to Goa, we need it to survive as a tourist
destination in the face of competition from other states and other
countries. We need to be careful about the wrapping with which this gift
comes...specially if strings are attached instead of ribbons!

I am for the GIFF.[ I am aware that quite a few persons and organizations
will be against it in any form.] I also would like the possible damage to
the beautiful Aguada plateau to be avoided. We do not need a Sagar/La Marvel
colony type of construction to mar the beauty of the place. Let the venue
be designed and built like the Hermitage or THV. Let the faciclity be
environmentally, ecologically, functioally and aesthetically correct for Goa.
Let it not be a structure like the Goa University...designed for the desert
and built in a high rainfall area. Let it not be designed like
CannesCannes is not on the West Coast of India.Let the plans be made
public and open to public debate. Let it not be implemented like the A/C
auditorium of the Kala Academy where the first five rows are below the level
of water in the Mandovi River from the mudflats of which the venue was
reclaimed in the late 1960s. The first agricultural exhibition of the Green
Revolution era was held on this very land in 1967 .That was under Bhau
Bandodkar's Chief Ministership. We have never had an exhibition on that
scale ever after. We do not have land for that in Panaji any more. Let it
not be the same story in Sinquerim( Sin-querim,the land of the *kegdi* or
*antho* plant, *Pandanus terrestris* that once abounded here. The name
Querim/Keri and its variants like Naquerim,Conquerim,Sinquerim,Sinquetim in
Pernem,Sattari,Bicholim,Bardez,Ponda,Sanguem and Quepem talukas have an

The Sinquerim Heritage Nature Club is a response
by the people of Sinquerim to the recent attempts
by powerful business interests to commercialise and
privatise our beautiful village and its natural and
historical heritage in the name of 'Tourism'.

We are people of good will who are deeply in love
with our tiny village and fearful of loosing the wonderful
natural and historical heritage endowed upon this tiny
 piece of land.

Amidst rampant cutting of trees, ground water pollution,
leveling of sand dunes and mushrooming of ugly buildings
in the neighbouring villages, Sinquerim has inadvertently
become the lungs of the Calangute - Candolim tourism belt.

We believe that this rich and priceless natural beauty
of undulating hills, washed by the foaming waves
of the Arabian sea, historical Fort Aguada and the Church
of St. Lawrence, should remain for posterity as our gifts
of Health, Wealth Recreation to our children and our
 children yet unborn.

It is towards this end that we have set up the Sinquerim

1.To protect the historical, architectural and natural Heritage

2.To protect the natural biodiversity and maintain the serene

[Goanet]NEWS-DAMAN: Bridge collapses, nine children die

2003-08-28 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
Bridge collapses, nine children die

From Indo-Asian News Service

Ahmedabad, Aug 28 (IANS) At least nine school children died Thursday when a
Portuguese-built bridge over a river crashed in the union territory of Daman
and Diu, plunging several vehicles into the fast-flowing waters.

The bridge over the Daman Ganga came down at around 1.00 p.m. when some
two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws and a car were passing over it. All these
vehicles fell into the river.

Fishermen jumped into the river and rescued about 10 school students.

They retrieved the bodies of nine children too.

The rescue operation is on. We have recovered some bodies but more people
are feared dead, Daman municipality president Vishal Tandel told IANS over
telephone from Daman, about 400 km south or here.

Witnesses said more than 25 people may have died in the disaster.

The bridge was very old and badly in need of repair, according to sources.

The bridge, made by the Portuguese, links the adjoining localities of Nani
Daman and Moti Daman.

A 90-metre portion of the 300-metre long, narrow and one-way bridge has
fallen in the river.

[Goanet]NEWS: Pope to make key appointments

Pope to make key appointments

From Indo-Asian News Service

Washington, Aug 28 (IANS) Pope John Paul II has spent part of his summer
vacation at Castel Gandolfo deciding on nominations to fill top Vatican
posts soon to be made vacant by compulsory retirement, UPI reported quoting
church sources.

He needs to find a replacement for Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the
Bavarian-born, rigidly conservative Prefect of the Congregation of the
Doctrine of the Faith who has been second in importance only to John Paul II
himself in putting the clock back -- as many observers see it -- on the
progressive reforms of the Second Vatican Council.

At the same time the pope faces key vacancies in the area of Vatican foreign
policy at a time when the church is seeking to play a more active role in
international affairs. Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano --
effectively the prime minister of the small city state -- is among the
senior prelates who have reached the mandatory retirement age for Catholic
clergy of 75.

A successor will also have to be found for the Vatican's de facto foreign
minister, Archbishop Jean-Luis Tauran of France, who is only 70, but wants
to resign because of ill health. In addition, the sources say, the pope
needs to name prelates to several other senior posts ranging from a new head
of the congregation for religious communities, and the governor of Vatican
City.

John Paul II, 83, is suffering from advanced Parkinson's disease. He gets
about only in a wheel chair or on a small wheeled platform. But at the
Vatican there is no longer the same concern of a couple of years ago that he
was close the end of his life.

October 16 marks the 25th anniversary of his papal election, when his
pontificate will become the second longest in history -- after Pope Pius IX,
who was pontiff for 35 years and seven months.

The sources say this explains why the new nominations do not seem like
stopgap appointments. On the contrary, one commentator says Pope John Paul
II appears to be filling the Roman Curia -- the Catholic Church's central
bureaucracy -- with relatively young conservative prelates who will shape
the course of the next pontificate because they would be hard for a
successor to dislodge.

Although no official announcements are likely until the pope returns to the
Vatican from his summer palace in Rome's Alban Hills, Ratzinger's successor
at what used to be known as the Holy Office, which directed the Inquisition,
will almost certainly be his deputy, Archbishop Angelo Amato.

The 65-year-old Italian theologian, who is a member of the Silesian order,
can be expected to follow the ultra-orthodox line as his superior and
mentor.

Sources say Amato was the author the recently issued controversial Vatican
document Dominus Jesus. Its theme is that Christianity is the true faith,
and not all religions are equally valid ways to salvation -- a position that
had one critic complaining that the document had sent the ecumenical
movement almost back to square one.

Last month, Amato also published a letter in the Italian magazine Famiglia
Cristiana challenging what he called the myth that the 16th century
astronomer Galileo was imprisoned, badly treated, and even tortured by his
church interrogators. He said recent evidence shows that Galileo was
comfortably lodged and well looked after during his trial on charges of
heresy for saying that the earth rotates round the sun.

To succeed Cardinal Sodano the pope is reliably believed to have picked
Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, currently Prefect of the Congregation of
Bishops, and himself sometimes mentioned as papable, that is, a possible
pope.

Re is a veteran career diplomat of ripe experience who rose to the level of
substitute (deputy) secretary of state. In his present post he is
responsible for advising the pope on the appointment of new bishops
throughout the world.

He also persuaded U.S. bishops to tone down the tough one slip you're out
rule adopted two years ago for dealing with suspected paedophile priests.

The changes in the political branch of the Roman Curia come at a time when
Pope John Paul has shown signs of wanting the Holy See -- diplomatic speak
for the Vatican -- to play a more direct role in international affairs.

At the U.N., for example, the Holy See has been discreetly lobbying -- so
far unsuccessfully -- to change its current observer status to a more active
representational role.

The GOA-Toronto, under Oscar Furtado, dedicated this year's Viva Goa 2003 as
Toronto's community event as part of the World Goa Day celebrations.

I guess Maurice Clarina/Goa Academy did not attend/participate there. Just for
the record the Viva Goa celebrations in Toronto are the largest gathering of
Goans outside Goa (at the same time).

Would like to hear more on the activities of Goa Academy.

[Goanet]Goa PWD killed Rajendra Kudnekar with contaminated water

2003-08-28 Thread Goa Desc
--
Documented by Goa Desc Resource Centre Ph:2252660
Website: www.goadesc.org Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Press clippings on the web: http://www.goadesc.org/mem/
--
-
PWD Killed Rajendra
-
The death of the 37-year-old Saligao resident,
Rajendra Kudnekar, the first victim of the jaundice
epidemic under scores one very grim ground reality.
It is the poor who are most vulnerable to every epidemic
and indeed every disease.
Rajendra, though a resident of Saligao was living in
rented accommodation in Merces with his wife and two
children. Rajendra worked as a peon in the Employees
State Insurance Corporation at Patto in Panjim. Rajendra
had no vices. He had no history of drinking. Otherwise,
we are sure the government and the health authorities
would have very happily attributed his death to chronic
alcoholism.
Rajendra contracted the disease because he regularly
frequented two of the contaminated restaurants. But unlike
in the case of the other jaundice patients, the epidemiological
officer had no record of his eating patterns.
In fact, Dr Tamba was apparently not even aware that Rajendra
the humble peon from Patto had died of jaundice. Since Rajendra
was only a peon, his death due to jaundice went almost unnoticed
even in the Goa Medical College.
Rajendra died at 5.30 a.m. in the morning but as of 11 in the
morning the Dean, Dr Dhume was not even aware that jaundice
had claimed its first victim. Perhaps, the head of the medicine
department did not consider the death of a mere peon important
enough.
When we asked Dr Dhume, he informed us he would have to
check with the medical superintendent who was away all of
Monday morning attending a meeting of the Productivity Council
or some such thing. Till well past noon the Chief Epidemiological
Officer was not even aware that jaundice had claimed its first victim.
Nobody had bothered to inform him.
Dr Tamba came to know absurdly enough only after we informed
him that jaundice had claimed its first official victim. It was only
then that he rushed to the Goa Medical College hospital and
confirmed for himself that jaundice had claimed its first victim.
But even after the Chief Epidemiological Officer had finally
discovered that jaundice had claimed its first victim nobody
thought it fit or necessary to inform the acting Chief Secretary,
Vijay Madan who is heading the jaundice containment mission.
It was we who first informed Vijay Madan that jaundice claimed
its first victim.
We are not putting all this on record to demonstrate that our
intelligence and surveillance machinery is better than that
of the government. But to dramatise the total lack of co-ordination
even between the Goa Medical College and the Health Services.
If the medicine department of the Goa Medical College does not
consider it important enough to communicate the first jaundice
death to the Chief Epidemiological Officer why blame the
private nursing homes and private practitioners?
And we have been consistently and persistently told that
jaundice or hepatitis A and hepatitis E are not serious life
threatening diseases. We are told that they are self-limiting.
The Indian Medical Association in its press note called it a
symptom, not a disease. So will somebody please explain
how and why young Rajendra died of a self-limiting,
not life-threatening condition which is not even a disease
and just a symptom according to the Goa branch of the
Goa Medical Association?
The Goa Medical College has, of course, its stock explanations.
That he was brought to the Goa Medical College hospital only
at a very late stage. The alibi of the Goa Medical College has
always been the lament that patients go to private doctors and
nursing homes. Who aggravate the medical conditions of the
patient and shift the patient to the Goa Medical College only
when the patients is in a terminal condition.
Not that this does not happen. But did the Chief Epidemiological
Officer attempt to find out who treated Rajendra and who
recommended his admission to the GMC?
The probability is that Rajendra either went to the ESI doctor
or went directly to the GMC. Because unlike the rich and the
powerful and the bold and the beautiful, the poor have no choice.
And since the GMC did not seem to be too anxious or in a hurry
to inform the Epidemiological Officer of the first jaundice death,
is it possible that private nursing homes have been even more
reticent.
Has the nodal group checked if any of the deaths in the private
nursing homes are due to jaundice. This is because private
nursing homes are prone to suppress details of their failures.
What all this adds up to is that the machinery is not functioning
even at the level of basic communications.
The other lesson from this tragedy is that it underscores that
it is the poor who are most vulnerable.

Re: [Goanet]World Goa Day

2003-08-28 Thread Miguel
Dear Mr.Botelho,

There are three English dailies in Goa; the third one is 'Gomantak
Times',which has more Goa-centric news than any other English newpaper
available in Goa.
All Goans are not readers of English newspapers. They do not become less
Goan than those that are net savvy or English reading type. We have to think
of them ,too,if we want to unite.

Personally, I would rather try and get a news item on world Goa Day into all
the newspapers and free-sheeters like Vasco Watch and Mapusa/Panaji/Margao
Plus(with a supporting advertisement ,if needed,to motivate publication of
the news item) than to publish a supplement which is rather expensive and
not cost effective at all. Nonetheless, your suggestion to spread the
message beyond the net is very good indeed.

We had exhibitions of plants during the last three years to coincide with
the WGD.We did not formally link it,but brought Goans together and made them
proud of being Goan. While the NRIs had cultural programmes, picnics and
parties on 23 August, we focussed on the wealth of coconut, the goodness of
cocnut oil and the Mexican pest that is playing hell with coconuts during
the last three years. We even published a book to inform the goans who have
coconut trees how to rid themselves of this problem. We also showed them how
to enjoy tender coconut water intead of getting kidney stones by not
consuming enough water because of the jaundice scare and the detection of
pesticide residues in almost all brands of bottled Mineral Water and soft
drinks in Delhi and Maharashtra,Pepsi and Coke inclusive.Tender coconut
water is packed by Nature in a cent percent biodegradable container. The
world is growing tender,are we?

Finally, would you contribute in part for the issue of supplement/advertising
support?

Warm regards,
Miguel

[Goanet]World Goa Day – A cultural eye opener and binding force

2003-08-28 Thread Bernado Colaco

Young Stan a Goa Day participant in Macau once wrote
in a school competition as being a tree among the
paddy fields. This years first Goa Day and the Konkani
mass were an eye opener to Goan identity and culture
for young Goans such as Stan.

The various celebrations world wide is another example
that Goans can bind themselves forgetting petty and
immature differences that often prevail in Goan
society.

Rene Barreto has shown us the way, it is important
that young Goans participate actively in future Goa
Days celeberations.

A good example of such a situation is Dr. José Colaço.
Today the good Doutor has a Portuguese flag hoisted on

I have witnessed several times the real shock and
 awe that Goans arriving
here for the first time feel. Nothing that they see
 in Lisbon and in the
rest of the country seems to match the picture of
 Portugal and its people
that they were fed upon by some local (and now

It is a dramatic moment of truth. I just wish a lot

[Goanet]Morya mhunnat... MORYA!! Morya mhunnat... MORYA!! (Legend,101 Names celebrations)

2003-08-28 Thread Cecil Pinto
A) The Mythological Legend of Lord Ganesh's Origins.

In Dravidian times, Ganesha was worshipped as an elephant, signifying the
wisdom and majesty of the universe. The invading Aryans, adopted the
Dravidian godling and affirmed their belief in Ganesha. Ganesha made a
ceremonial entrane as an Aryan god. 'The auspicious god', he would be
worshipped at the beginning of all rites, an unbroken tradition that
continues to this day.

In myths, the birth of Ganesha is celebrated as a divine twist of fate. The
most popular myth brings alive the story about the elephant head. It all
began when Parvati, wanted to bathe. She needed privacy and since there was
no one at hand, she created a guard with the sweat and oils from her body.
She brought the figure of a young man to life and told him to stand guard
while she bathed.

When Shiva, her husband returned and strode towards their home, he found
his way blocked by an unknown soldier. The soldier blocked Shiva's entry.
Shiva was furious, a duel began. The soldier fought well, but was no match
against the might of Shiva, who killed him. Parvati came out and saw the
dead body, she demanded he be brought back to life.

Shiva sent his hordes to collect the head of the first living being, who
was sleeping with head facing north. The north was associated with wisdom,
and was also the direction from which the Aryans had invaded.

Airavat, Indra's white elephant paid the price for Shiva's blunder. While
Airavat slept facing the north, Shiva's hordes beheaded him. His elephant
head was carried away for the dead body. An incensed Parvati demanded that
her child be promoted to the status of a primary god. Shiva and all the
other gods knew this was the only way they could placate her and Ganesha
took his place before all the gods.

All rituals (samskaras), begin with the worship of Ganesha. His image
invokes the universe, his head signifies wisdom and his body is globular,
Vishwaroopa. Ganesha represents the majesty of the animal kingdom with his
head and his vehicle the mouse shows subjugation of pestilent rats.

His trunk is twisted into an embodiment of 'Om', the syllable that created
the world. To combat evil, he carries weapons the discus, trident, sword
and shield. A broken tusk is a reminder of his battle with a demon, and the
fight with the forces of evil. Yet, the same tusk is used by him in the
writing of the epic, the Mahabharata. When Vyasa wanted to compose the
Mahabharata, Brahma suggested Ganesha be his scribe. Vyasa agreed and
Ganesha brought his broken tusk to writing quill. Vyasa dictated the entire
epic in verse. Ganesha recorded every word for Gods and men alike.

He carries a modak (sweet dumpling) in one hand, for his appetite is
insatiable, and conscious of his role the other hand shows in the 'abhaya
mudra'(do not fear, I am here to protect).

Another legend, explains Ganesha's role in changing astronomy. In the month
of Shravan/Bhadrapad, after a feast of modaks Ganesha was on his way home.
He was riding his mouse, a snake slithered into their path, the mouse
tripped and Ganesha took a tumble. His stomach split, and the modaks fell
out, Chandra (the moon) was watching and he began to laugh. Ganesha picked
up the snake and used it as a belt to hold his stomach together. He looked
up, cursed Chandra and banned him from the night skies.

Soon the gods and humankind were dazed glare of the relentless sun. There
was no respite of darkness when the moon was banished from the sky. The
gods took a delegation to Ganesha and pleaded their case. Ganesha gave in,
but made an astronomic condition. The moon would never shine like before.
Full moon would be just once a month (earlier every day was a full moon).
On other days the Chandra as a reminder of his misdemeanour would wax or wane!

Ganesha straddles the divide between the believers of Shiva and Vishnu.
Ganesh idols are worshipped both by Shaivites and Vaishnavites. Ganesha
temples are seen in almost every village in India. Chubby and gleeful and
elephant headed, Ganesha easily finds his place in the hearts of Gods and
people.

 Edgar Martins,

 Your 3 points regarding gypsum.

  1. I am no dud and

  2. gypsum is alkaline not acidic. Edgar

 gypsum CaSO4 is ph neutral.
 limestone, dolomite CaCO3 are alkaline.

  3. It will raise the ph value of the soil if used. Edgar

it lowers ph *only* in sodium induced alkalinity as in the case of
sodic soils.
for raising ph, use limestone (ref. point 2) Agnelo

gypsum is ph neutral. it works by removing sodium from
the soil. removal of sodium *lowers ph* and improves
soil aeration. (by promoting flocculation and aggregation)

most, but not all agricultural/horticultural crops
require mildly acidic soil for the uptake of
 minerals/micro nutrients.

[Goanet]NEWS: Canada's Shastri Institute to revive ties with India

2003-08-28 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
Canada's Shastri Institute to revive ties with India

By Eugene Correia, Indo-Asian News Service

Toronto, Aug 25 (IANS) After a period of strain, the Canada-based Shastri
Indo-Canadian Institute (SICI) and the Indian government may see better ties
soon.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between them will be renewed on
September 1.

Arun Prabha Mukherjee, newly elected president of the institute, will kick
off the Shastri Applied Research Project (SHARP) inception workshop which
will be held in New Delhi from September 1 to 5.

The renewed MoU has at least two significant developments.

For the first time, it opens SICI's membership for Indian universities.

Since SICI began in 1968, only Canadian universities have been allowed as
members. It currently has 19 members, including the Museum of Civilisation.

Mukherjee, who teaches at York University in Toronto and was the institute's
vice president in New Delhi for around a year, said at least 18 Indian
universities currently have Canadian studies.

Funding from both the Indian and Canadian sources has increased, with the
Indian government raising its contribution from Rs.12 million to Rs.20
million and the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs committing $4.1
million over four years.

The Indian government has also emphasised that research be extended into new
areas like intellectual property, IT, new media, films and biotechnology.

Two assessment reviews were conducted, Mukherjee said, the one on management
issues being done by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore and
the other relating to academic matters by the Indian Institute of
Philosophical Research.

The reviews called for structural changes and more funding from the Indian
government, which responded by setting up a six-member joint task force with
three members each from the Canadian and Indian side.

Terming the institute unique, the task force stressed that it must continue
and recommended parity of voting. From four members in 1969 to an all-time
high of 23 members in 1995 to 19 in 2003, the institute has shown steady
progress.

While each Canadian university pays $5,000 as annual membership, Indian
universities will be paying less at around Rs.10,000.

It was in 2000 that matters had come to a head casting doubts on the future
of the institute that was set up to promote bilateral intellectual discourse
and mutual understanding.

The issues that threatened to destroy the organisation were the hosting of
the Dust on the Road: Canadian Artists in Dialogue with SAHMAT (Safdar
Hasmi Memorial Trust), an exhibition that highlighted the spread of
communalism in India and which ran in Toronto, and an academic seminar,
Accommodation Diversity: Learning from the Indian and Canadian
Experiences, to be held at an Ontario university, which was cancelled at
the last minute due to pressure from the Indian government.

Under the MoU, the Indian government's approval must be obtained for all
projects. Then Indian high commissioner Rajnikanta Verma raised objections
to the anti-government bias in the exhibitions that led the Shastri
Institute to withdraw funds of $5,000 to the exhibition that had been held
in four Canadian cities before Toronto.

Subsequent tensions between the Shastri Institute and the Indian government
called for an assessment of the body and two reviews were then initiated by
the Indian government.

It was felt that the Indian government should have a say in the
administration of the institute, which is based at the University of
Calgary, and has been run by a board elected by the Canadian universities.

The institute has an India Studies Programme, Library Programme, Microfilm
Programme, and the Canadian Studies Programme.

SICI helps students and scholars from both countries continue their research
and offers scholarships that are open to others, besides academics. The
library exchange programme helps Canadian scholars receive books from India.

SIMPUTER SURFACES AT GOA'S MINES

[ GNULinux CORPORATE VIEW ]

The Reuter's report of the use of Simputers at Dempo's mines in Goa (see
http://in.tech.yahoo.com/030731/137/26i2o.html ) was good news for GNU/Linux
fans in Goa. After all, the core of the Simputer is Free Software.

Only goes to underline the point: technology can become relevant to the
commonman if only knowledge is not hidden or blocked.

Journalist Anshuman Daga, writing from Bangalore, reported that like many
companies worldwide, Indian mining group Dempo uses handheld computers to
help it manage data about its business.

Says the report: (T)he device Dempo uses to update its inventories is a
home-grown product called the Simputer.

It quotes Demop stragetic planning official M.R.Aravindan saying: Earlier,
it used to take us more than a week to compile and analyse details of the
iron ore picked up by our trucks.

Two years after a launch marred by marketing and funding concerns, the
Simputer is spreading quietly into small towns and schools, as well as to
business users such as Dempo. There are plans to put it on retailers'
shelves across the country this year.

FROM MAPUSA... TO SHIRODA?

[ CAMPUS TALK ]

Students at St Xavier's College in Mapusa came across a range of new ideas
and options in recent weeks, during a workshop over GNU/Linux that spanned
much of the day.

Before the event -- executed well by the college and ILUG-Goa volunteers --
students played around with many Free Software 'distros'. Needless to say,
there were no artificial or legal blocks on anyone copying this software,
experimenting with it, or learning more.

Ashley Delaney [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote in to say prior to the
event: I went to Xavier's this morning, and was plesantly surprised to see
a few guys installing Red Hat 9 on a few PCs albit with a few hardware
problems. (They've got access to) a whole lot of distros and were trying to
install all of them!

This workshop went off well. Many students sat glued to their seats, long
after the time for demos was over. Bright young students went home with
fresh ideas and inspiration.

Next to take the step was RIT, the Rayeshwar Institute of Technology, which
incidentally is Goa's third and youngest engineering colleges. They're keen
to learn more about Free Software (free as in freedom, not price) and
probably set up a local group to take their understanding further.

User-groups are an excellent way of promoting self-study. The Net also
allows for the sharing of knowledge of an unprecedented pace. In Goa itself,
there are two mailing lists, ILUG-Goa (search for it at yahoogroups.com) and
teach-yourself-linux (located on the same site).

Anyway, the Shiroda engineering college would be following in the footsteps
of the older engineering colleges in Goa. GEC at Farmaguddi has a core-team
that well understands the power of Free Software. Last year, Free Software
Foundation head Richard RMS Stallman visited and lectured here. PCC too
has been quick to realise this potential. Earlier this year, they hosted a
team speaking about TeX -- that simple but amazing piece of software that
can make publishing a breeze!

REPORT FROM GEC: The first LaTeX report from the Farmagudi-based Goa
Engineering College got ready recently. It was a final year Mech project
report.

This report with graphs, tables, figures, biblio, contents etc. (complete in
all respects) is with Prof George Easaw [EMAIL PROTECTED] in pdf format. He
generously offered to upload it to a public site for curious members who
would like to see how the report looks like.

This pdf doc was only about 650 KB.

Says Prof Easaw: LaTeX (has arrived) in the GEC with a bang ... and the
four students -- Sameer, Anil, Swapnil and Dharmaraj -- promised that they
will henceforth try to use Free Software whereever possible and spread the
good word around. i have personally seen that they are quite well versed in
preparing the LaTeX reports independently.

MORE ON TeX: Ms. Kshama Fernandes [EMAIL PROTECTED] is a young prof at
the Goa Institute of Management, Ribandar, who won the wows of GNU/Linux
geeks when she recently demoed her skills at using TeX to compose academic
papers, and even a book.

TeX is, incidentally, pronounced at Tek.

Says Fernandes: I started using Tex two years ago and it has been a great
experience. It helped me do a lot of things, including publish a book As
an academic, I should be spending my time on putting across ideas (not
wasting it on doing typesetting).

[Goanet]How Baby Bear got his name

2003-08-28 Thread Cecil Pinto
A Goan Fable for little children.

Like all Ancient Fables, this one too is based on reality. Names and
descriptions have been altered to hide the identities of the participants.

This is the house of the Three Bears. Dada Bear, Mama Bear and Small Bear.
One more Bear, a Baby Son Bear has been recently added to the family. Baby
Bear has not yet been given a name. Mama Bear, Dada Bear, Small Bear, Baby
Bear, Grandpa Bear, Grandpa Bear and Grand Mai Bear (Mama Bear's mama) are
all gathered in the hall of the house of the Three (now four) bears to
choose a name.

Mama Bear: So what options do we have now?

Dada Bear: I've got you the best Baby Bear Names Books. Downloaded the
best Baby Bear Names Internet Sites. We've discussed this matter enough
times already. So today we decide.

Grandma Bear: Just keep it simple. Easy to pronounce. Easy to remember.

Grandpa Bear: And it has to be meaningful too. Preferably something from
the Bible.

Grand Mai Bear: Get the Almanac. You young people of today don't refer to
the Almanac. In our time there were no Baby Bear Books and Internet Sites.
We just saw the name of the saint in the Almanac and that was the name
given to the child. If anyone had just died in the family, then that name
was given. Nowadays you people have no religion, nor respect for the dead!

Dada Bear: How about Digambar?

Everybody: Naaah

Grandma Bear: Carl sounds nice

Grand Mai Bear: We have a Carl in our village who is a perpetual drunk. No!

Mama Bear: Tim is short and sweet and easy to remember

Grandma Bear: Your cousin's son is already named Tim

Dada Bear: But he's in Australia. We have'nt seen him in twentyfive years!

Grandma Bear: Doesn't make a difference. There are thousands of names. Why
do we have to repeat the same name in the immediate family?

Dada Bear:Daniel sounds nice. And its from the Bible. And it is easy to
remember and pronounce and...

Mama Bear: And I know at least three friends of mine, in the last two
years, who have named their son Daniel.

Dada Bear: So what of it?

Mama Bear: There's to many Daniels around and there is sure to be
confusion when they grow up

Grandpa Bear: Einstein is elegant

Dada Bear: Yes. Sure. And if he fails in the fifth standard then we will
be the laughing stock of the neighborhood

Mama Bear: In that case, if you're so worried about him failing, let's
name him Jesus!

Dada Bear: Why?

Mama Bear (laughing): Because Jesus Never Fails!

Dada Bear and Mama Bear and even Small Bear laughs. But the elders don't
appreciate the joke. So back again to a sober discussion.

Grandpa Bear (cautiously): Ethan?

Baby Bear: :Waaah! Wah! Wh!

Mama Bear: See even he doesn't like the name!

Dada Bear: Domnick would be nice.

Mama Bear: How come all your suggestions start with the letter D?

Dada Bear: Well me and my brothers were all named with C. So maybe the
next generation should be named with D

Mama Bear: I don't want any of these sequences, and definitely none of
those stupid combi-names like your cousins Hector and Edna. Imagine naming
your daughter Hecna.

Dada Bear: So how about you suggesting something practical for a change?

Mama Bear: I'm thinking. I'm thinking

Grand Mai Bear: Francis, after the Saint who protects us all

Dada Bear: Too common, in fact that's the most common name in Goa.

Grandma Bear:We're never going to get anywhere at this rate. I have a
suggestion. We randomly open the baby Bear Names book and choose a name. If
any one Bear objects, anyone, the name is discarded. Again we randomly open
the book, and so forth. The first name that NOBODY objects to is selected.
Is that Ok?

Everyone: Ok!

Threat to Heritage

Goa hosting the international film festival is a welcome move.
But the venue of the festival is the eco-sensitive Aguada heritage
plateau next to the fort.
We have to unitedly oppose this venue because this will cause
untold damage to the plateau. The plateau will soon turn into
something like the Kadamba bus stand.
What about the people? Have their views been taken into consideration?
The government cannot take arbitrary decisions on its own just because
film makers feel that Goa is the best place to have fun and frolic.
The Aguada venue has to be reconsidered as the people of Sinquerim
do not want the festival there. As it is, the insensitive domestic tourists
litter the place. They spit and urinate on the fort wall. This is the kind
of respect they show to our monuments.
The Mumbai filmwallahs are no better than our domestic tourists.
Let us strongly oppose the holding of the festival on the Aguada plateau.

At the release ceremony, Bishop Cyprian told the gathering that the album
was dedicated to the Asian Youth and commended Fr. Nixon for his effort.

Shirya Laira is a sound of praise to God and, while it is based on the
reflection on my life as youth, the songs highlight youth and peace, said
Fr. Nixon who was ordained priest at the Pilar Seminary just a couple of
 years back.

Two songs from this album are also adopted in 'Vibrations', the official
album released by the Asian Youth Meet committee.

The Asian Youth Meet organised by the Indian Catholic Youth Movement of

97.83 per cent in her top six OAC subjects was the
board's best.

I still don't know what my individual marks are, but
it's a wonderful feeling, the lively 18-year-old
graduate of Brampton's Cardinal Leger Secondary School
said.

This academic year was particularly challenging and
competitive because of the so-called double cohort,
which saw both OAC and Grade 12 students eligible for
graduation and spots in university programs.

The board's top Grade 12 graduate is Dorotea
Mutabdzic, of Philip Pocock Secondary School in
Mississauga, with an average of 97.33 per cent.

With at least $3,000 in scholarships already in the
bank and more expected, DeSouza will study commerce at
the U of T's Mississauga campus.

True to her motto of always being prepared and staying
on top of school work, she's taking some
pre-university programs to be ready. DeSouza said her
summer employer, Sobey's grocery store, has scheduled
her shifts as a cashier on weekends so she can attend
class.

Born in Mumbai, India, she and her family arrived in
Canada when she was 11.

Fluent in English when she arrived, the petite student
established her academic credentials early and won a
succession of awards and prizes throughout her grade
school and high school years. Her best marks were in
economics, accounting, computers, finite math,
algebra/geometry and calculus.

I think it's very important to always stay on top of
your school work — never get behind and never be
discouraged when things don't go the way you expect.

Set goals, focus on them and above all else,
persevere, DeSouza said. But, she continued, you
can't be book-bound, You have to become involved in
your community, to help people, be there for them.

You need to have a passion for life — that's what
makes the experience complete.

She was a member of the student council, worked on the
school's Urban Alliance Social Committee, which
supported a variety of social causes and raised money
to assist in the recovery of the Iraqi people after
the war.

With the help of my family and friends and trust in
God, I have been able to enrich my life and hopefully
the lives of others. I'm thankful for it, DeSouza
said.

Now that I've said all that, I'd better make sure I
say it all to my sister, who is starting Grade 9 in
September, she laughed.

Like her big sister, Aurelia DeSouza, 14, is already
on track. She has been named valedictorian for her
Grade 8 graduating class.

Re: [Goanet]Re:Conservation of Portuguese Heritage

2003-08-28 Thread Rui Collaco
Mr. Souza, you missed the point I was trying to make. Yes, it is true that
in your precious little newspaper article a perfectly unknown (not
anonymous, of course) citizen makes some criticism. So what, once again?
It's a free country, there are more than 10 million of us, each with an
opinion. You are a Portuguese now, haven't you realized that the Portuguese
are world champions at criticising themselves and their country?
But the question remains: Is it legitimate to pick an obscure newspaper
article written by someone that nobody knows, and draw any kind of
conclusion from it regarding the state of our heritage and conservation
efforts? Of course there are problems with some monuments and heritage
sites. But on the whole, we have a proven record in that area, and
considerable capacity to help other countries in this field. What we are
doing around the world is a testimony to that.
You can continue to mislead Goanetters with your petty fait-divers, aimed
at throwing mud at Portugal (your own country, by the way, who would believe
that!!!), but one thing is certain: the moment any of your readers sets foot
in Portugal all those efforts at brainwashing them will be rendered useless.
I have witnessed several times the real shock and awe that Goans arriving
here for the first time feel. Nothing that they see in Lisbon and in the
rest of the country seems to match the picture of Portugal and its people
that they were fed upon by some local (and now global) manipulators.
It is a dramatic moment of truth. I just wish a lot more Goans (and by that
I mean those in Goa) would be able to come here and see for themselves.

My reference to the article in Lisbon daily Diário de Noticias of 24 Aug.
would be relevant, despite Rui Colaço considering it a selective reading.
Full picture may emerge from many fragments. All that we post or produce
can
only be fagmentary and a selection based on one's own criteria, or agenda
as Rui Colaço likes to call it. It is obvious that he has his! No one can
provide full picture of anything. Even the so-called *objectivity of
history* is a myth. Real objective history could result (if it will ever
result) from the subjective expriences / narratives of every single
individual.

For those who could not access the link, follows the text. I shall
translate the last paragraph: «This researcher comes to the conclusion that
our history has seen all along a lack of organization and planning. Her
criticism is: We have a quaint sensibility regarding the heritage. In
reality, there is no single policy of conservation and restoration of
monuments. If there are restoration projects, there is no concern for
archeological excavations. The trend is to capture fast and mass tourism.»

Jangadas de pedra à deriva
by Silvia Costa, Cascais [not anonymous as claimed by Rui Colaço]

no
original», refere a investigadora Margarida Ramalho.
