Plans afoot to rehabilitate Baina sex workers
--
In a significant development, the Goa State Women's Commission
(GSWC) and the Karnataka State Women's Commission (KSWC)
have decided to work jointly for the rehabilitation of commercial sex
workers of Baina red-light area.
Last week, the members of the women's commissions from Goa
and Karnataka visited the red-light area in Baina with the objective
to explore the prospects of rehabilitating the sex workers.
The GSWC chairperson, Ms Swati Kerkar told The Navhind Times
that the sex workers given a chance, would like to give up the flesh
trade and go for an alternate, more respectable mode of livelihood,
adding that the sex workers are more than willing to shed the gaudy
paint off their faces, provided they are given an option to choose a
'good alternate job'.
She also pointed out that even though the sex workers are ready to
turn over a new leaf, it is the pressure from the runners of the brothels,
more commonly known as Gharwalis which make them think twice
about the offer.
The Gharwalis who are not ready to give up the goose which lays
golden eggs, are yet to support the project, Ms Kerkar said,
observing, "they feel that the government is trying to uproot them
from their `well-settled' position, when it is the judiciary which has
given directives regarding the rehabilitation of the sex workers''.
Last year, the Panaji bench of the Bombay High Court had instructed
the South Goa District Magistrate and the National Commission for
Women (NCW) about presenting a compliance report regarding
rehabilitation of the commercial sex workers in the Baina red-light
area, by April 2004.
"Though GSWC is not a party to a related writ petition, earlier filed
by Savera, a non-governmental social organisation, regarding
rehabilitation of the sex workers, the Commission has decided to
assist the individuals and institutions involved in the reformation
process," Ms Kerkar added.
With a possible solution of sending back these sex workers to their
native places, mostly situated in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh
states, GSWC had established contacts with the women's
commissions of these places, and even received favourable
response, she added.
The deputy Collectors from Belgaum and Haveri districts have
already visited Baina, in the past and the members of the Karnataka
State Women's Commission had a detailed interaction with the
sex workers last week, Ms Kerkar, who accompanied them to the
red-light area pointed out.
The adverse effects of prostitution on the sex workers themselves
as well as on the community in general, have been impressed upon
them during the joint visit by both the commissions, she said,
informing that "the disgraceful irony wherein the middle-aged
commercial sex workers (CSWs) send their teenaged girls to
school, while import the girls in the same age group from
Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, for continuation of flesh trade,
has also been discussed in detail, with them''.
Further speaking, the GSWC chief said that presently the sex workers,
especially young girls operating in this area, prefer to function
temporarily and move away to a married life, once they are able
to collect a substantial amount, which may be anything above
Rs 25,000. "So, there is a fluidity among the flesh-trade operators
in Baina red-light area and no girl operating in the region wants
to involve herself permanently in this trade," she noted.
Meanwhile, the police have kept a strict vigilance around the
Baina red-light area and are working as a deterrent for those,
especially youth, who try to sneak into the area.
Ms Kerkar, referring to a recent incident wherein some of the
sex workers had gone to the Marcaim Industrial Estate in search
of customers and were eventually driven away by the local residents,
said that since the presence of police had reduced the visitors to
the Baina red-light area, the sex workers might have ventured in
other parts of the state.
The Karnataka State Women's Commission has invited the
members of the GSWC to visit few of the probable sites in
Karnataka which would be used for the rehabilitation of sex workers,
and further offer suggestions regarding improvements, if needed,
she said. Ms Kerkar, however lamented that the Andhra Pradesh
Women's Commission has been a little too slow in its response.
In the meantime, the battle for survival continues for sex workers,
who more than anything else fear most the thought about their
next meal. The problem of livelihood, which gave rise to this profession
of disrepute, almost at the beginning of

RE: [Goanet]Helmets and other safety gear!

2004-01-23 Thread Nasci Caldeira
Hello all,

I do agree with Salus and do believe that all safety measures with adequate
safety gear, should be in place, without any further waste of time and life!

Easier said than done! People like me and Salus and others in Canada, USA
and Britain etc. are used to it and grow up with it. More imprtant is
"Safety Consciousness" not only in using appropriate gear, but also in
'driving' and 'working'. Goa and indeed all of India has still a long long
way to go.

Good roads, very good traffic management in road alignment and construction,
supervision of road construction by experts and stringent driving capability
and a proper crack down of driving teachers and their skills, in the first
place, will go a long way to emeliorate the 'suffering' of the Goan
Community.

Crack down should not mean 'hafta taking'!!! The traffic cops in the first
place and others supervising have to be trained first and made aware of
intrinsic skills and perception, which they should then pass on to drivers
and enforce the same not by merely 'legislating' but safety should be
enforced in the 'field' and without let or mercy!.

Drink driving must be immediate taboo and strictly enforced. Two children
riding with both parents on one scooter should be immediately banned. Not
more than two persons on a two wheeler at any time, should be strictly
enforced.

After all these and like measures are taken and people properly informed by
many sessions in many places; then only should helmets be made 'cumpulsory';
as of now it should be advisory; but the other more basic and imprtant stuff
should be made 'cumpulsory first!!! Without basic amenities, like I have
said above, the helmet rule becomes more like " washing off hands" by the
authorities!

I'm going to find out if the Australian or Melbourne traffic authority can
take on Goa to help with traffic management; driving schools and other
related tasks, on a sister status basis. Much knowledge and skill needs to
be imparted!

There is a lot, and plenty to learn by our Goan and Indian people from the
advanced countries in everything. The Indian/ Goan polies/ persons who tour
abroad should make a first hand proper study of systems abroad ; then they
will have put the tax payers money to good use. Not return and change the
look of the policeman's uniform, only to re-change it later. What matters
more is the training and capability etc of the person inside the uniform,
not the look of the dress itself. The Singapore police force is an all
officer force; there are no pan chewing uneducated havaldars there taking
hafta and turning a blind eye. U see, 'perception' and real action is
important.

Bye for now.
Cheers. nasci.

Hello Cecil,

I live in Melbourne, and cyclists over here have to use helmets too. It is
a good idea to use the helmets when riding on any two wheeler, motorised or
not. Somehow Goans in Goa seem to be having a problem with that, and we
find it hard to understand why. Safety starts with self, and I think the
Government is right in putting its foot down with the helmet law.
It is also high time safety conciousness and awareness arrives in the
various industries in Goa. Over here all factory workers have to wear
steel
capped safety shoes and safety glasses at all times while on the factory
floor. A lot of minor and major accidents are thus averted. So after the
helmet issue, maybe the next thing on the Government's agenda could be the
introduction of 'Safety at the workplaces', and this should also include
the
many garages all over the place.

Salus

* Highlights for January 1 - 15, 2004 *

The discussions in the first half of January revolved around many issues. Visits
to Goa were definitely talked about. The lives - successes and shortcomings of
Bl Jose Vaz and SFX were strongly debated too. Baina, Goa's red-light district
was discussed. Another subject that drew quite a few responses was choosing a
new word to replace Diaspora when we refer to the Goan Diaspora. The discussion
on assembling a list of all Catholic last names from December 2003 ran-over into
the New Year. The shortcomings and successes of the 2004 Gomant Vishwa Samelan

Here are some highlights from the first forthnight of twenty-O-four:

Wilma Pereira gives us her point of view as a reposte to Zarine Chinvala's
opinion on how to handle the Baina issue.

As expected Wilma got her fair share of responses of opposing views on how to
handle the situation.

Bill Seixas wrote in supporting the search for a new word for Diaspora.

Hello Peter,

You've written an excellent reply to Emilio and others like him who have
been angered by the Vatican.

While I agree with your reasoning and sentiments, still, I have
difficulty in understanding the human and divine processes at work at
the Vatican. It is my opinion that as a human [imperfect]institution the
Vatican, too, perpetuates some structures of sinfulness! Consequently,
the faithful have many a reason to be angry with those structures and
the Popes responsible for perpetuating them and have a right to express
their rightful sentiments.

May God's Holy Spirit, who transcends religions and religious
affiliations, bestow upon us Her Light and Strength "where giving is
infinite and forgiving is infinite."

[Goanet]Protestant/Evangelical Christianity in Goa

2004-01-23 Thread Daniel_Soares
To answer Peter D'souza's question, there is a fairly large, albeit undocumented
(in numbers) group of Evangelical and Pentecostal Christians in Goa. Some of
them are part of churches planted by foreign missionaries and others like
Cornerstone Fellowship (Margao) started by ex-Jesuit Victor Affonso, New Life
Fellowship (one of the fastest growing Pentecostal churches in India), Good News
Church (Margao) were started by churches in Bombay or other large metropolitan
areas.

Besides the churches I mentioned which on an average have 200 members and
upward, there are a number of other fellowships (groups of Christians) that meet
in homes all over Goa. These born-again Christians refer to themselves as
'believers' although I'm not sure if the group that Alfred deTavares is
referring to calls themselves by that specific name or if that is the generic
term being used to describe them. Re: Cradle to Grave security, perhaps he
refers to the 'Eternal Security' doctrine which SOME evangelicals hold to. If
you would like further information on this doctrine, please email me.

I think you will find that the Pentecostal churches tend to outnumber the
evangelicals. As a former member, I have a number of friends in Cornerstone
Fellowship (Goa) and New Life (Bombay). I had the occasion when I was in Goa
last Dec to go to a healing crusade organised by the Cornerstone Fellowship. The
visiting preacher was from Canada. We didn't stay for the whole meeting but
there were about 500 to 800 people that first night. If you need any contact
information, I would be glad to try and obtain it for you. Please email me
off-list for it.

Cornel,
First of all, thanks for making your underlying
concerns clearer. It's hard to know how to reply and
to whom to reply and what's going on in everyone's
head. Therefore, I still recommend using the delete
button for those who want to move on to other issues.
All I can say is that saints just happen in all
religions and non-religions - here we are talking
about the formal canonization of saints by the
Catholic Church. When I got interested in the truly
wonderful life of Joseph Vaz and wanted him canonized,
I honestly did not know what was involved in time,
costs, consulting with others, interchanges on the
topic etc. in order to get someone canonized.
Now I know and think differently. A formal
canonization is a matter of having the right
connections in Rome, most often having the backing of
a religious order or group, it takes I believe at
least U.S. $2 million if not more, and many other
factors to pull the whole thing off.
Therefore, each person would have to decide for
himself/herself whether this expensive process is
worth it or not to have someone declared a "saint."
Uncanonized saints happen, whether we want them or
not. But we can decide whether we want to go through
the bureaucratic channels to have a saint "canonized"
which means being enrolled into the Catholic Calendar
of Saints.

[Goanet]Reply to Cornel - re: Saints

2004-01-23 Thread Daniel_Soares
Cornel,

I'm quoting two of your statements from two different posts:

<<< Sainthood is not a concept and cause about which I personally can get
excited about. >>>

<<>>

While religion is, for the most part deeply embedded in the Goan psyche (in my
limited experience), discussion of religious issues like Sainthood in a public
forum where there are Catholics, evangelicals, agnostics, atheists all
participating, is bound to get responses that will stir some very strong
feelings. Hear me out. I am not saying that religion should not be discussed at
all. As long as the ground rules are clearly established and enforced and
opinions are not summarily dismissed and motives are not judged, it is quite
possible to have a civil discourse on the above topic but for this to happen,
the moderators of the forum need to step in when tempers get heated and
accusations start being levelled and names start being called.

Even though I am evangelical and do not subscribe to the practice of praying to
the Saints, I try to follow this thread because it gives me some understanding
about how people feel.

Daniel

[Goanet]Re: Rickshaws, Tricycles, Baby Taxis, Tuk Tuks, (Bajaj) Auto, Safa Tempo

2004-01-23 Thread Venantius J Pinto
All,
This is me indulging in my idiosyncrasy of going after specifics. Those
interested in going down my merry path read on. Others, please hit the
delete key.

Venantius

Hello Nasci, Gabe et al,
I was in Thailand in 2001 and yes they do refer to rickshaws as tuk tuk on
account of their two stroke engines. This is the understood diminutive (in
this case, as in affectionately) for the rickshaw in Thailand. They just
dont shout it from the rooftops but you do hear the drivers say it. While
in Thailand, I had confirmed whether what I was occassionaly hearing was
indeed - tuk tuk, with my Thai friend Pharanai Suwannatat whose wedding I
was there to attend. He affirmed. I also Iooked up the ubiquitous web for
some references from Thais and those living in Thailand. The last piece is
on South Asian tackling Rickshaw pollution.

Now we may have our own legends - as the one which Nasci C mentioned of the
sound made by the ticket punch used by ticket conductors on trams and buses
in Bombay(Mumbai) of recent yore. But grant the Thai their tuk tuk. We can
have our tuc tuc, khat khat, khit khit, tik tik, tick tock, dhoom dham,
dham dhoom and other onomatopoeic variants. : )

Anyway, this was fun putting together.

This is a site maintained by a Thai woman based in England.

Transport.
Transport in Thailand is very cheap. Cheapest would be SAMLOS (bicycle
powered rickshaws) followed by motorised rickshaws called tuk tuks because
of the sound they make. Negotiate your fare in advance.

1. SOUTH ASIA STARTS TO TACKLE AUTO RICKSHAW POLLUTION
Air pollution from South Asia's 3-wheeler taxis (known as
Auto Rickshaws or "baby taxis") is prompting action. These
vehicles are South Asia's version of Thailand's "Tuk Tuk"
or the Philippines' "tricycles".

In India, Bajaj auto, the manufacturer of the three wheeled
autorickshaws, has announced that it will stop production of
its two-stroke model, as it had developed a less polluting
four stroke engine. In addition, a four stroke CNG autorickshaw
is being released. The vehicle is claimed to deliver 50 km per
kg of CNG. A three litre stand-by petrol tank is also included,
for emergencies. Bajaj hopes to produce the vehicle at the
rate of 1000 a month by July at its Pune plant.

In Nepal, diesel-run auto-rickshaws, have been banned altogether
after a campaign by environmentalists against them. They have
been at least partially replaced by battery-operated three-
wheelers, called "safa tempo" (clean tempo), which do not emit
smoke or the loud noises associated with diesel auto-rickshaws.

In Dhaka, about 400 auto rickshaw mechanics recently took part
in the first of a series of training programs. It focused on
maintaining and repairing engines, and advising drivers on the
proper quality and quantity of lubricant oils. These are two
simple practices that can drastically reduce emissions. For
example, baby taxi drivers typically use as much as 10 percent
four-stroke engine oil with their petrol. But by using only
3 percent of quality two-stroke engine oil, they could save
money and reduce emissions. The workshops are being run by an
NGO, the Society for Urban Environmental Protection and Uttara
Motors, with funding from the World Bank and the Energy Sector
Management Assistance Program, a global technical assistance
effort funded by the World Bank, UNDP, and 15 public and
private donors. There are an estimated 50,000 auto rickshaws in
Dhaka, most of them using two-stroke engines. They contribute
approximately 35 percent of particles and nearly half of
hydrocarbons emitted by all vehicles.

Dear Alfred,
These examples of long-delayed canonizations are not
new to us - we have consulted the history books, canon
lawyers, historians, bishops, cardinals, postulators
and the like. The case of Joseph Vaz is unique as
Archbishop Henry D'Souza of Calcutta clearly said in
Rome in 2000 because it was affected by past church
policy on canonizations. He would not have agreed
with you that the delay for Joseph Vaz' canonization
was reasonable and said it publicly.

Re: [Goanet]Re: Manuel Antonio de Sousa

2004-01-23 Thread Jorge/Livia de Abreu Noronha
Dear Dr. Teotonio,

The commemoration in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) was promoted by the
"Instituto Goano de Lourenço Marques" which was founded in 1905 and of which
Paulo Nazário Pinto was the President in 1930 (year of its silver jubilee)
and maybe also in 1935 (year of the birth centenary of Manuel António de
Sousa). MAS was at some time elected "sócio benemérito" of the Institute.
Paulo Nazário Pinto, whom I knew personally and whose only son is a
pharmacist and lives in Lisbon, was one of distinguished personalities of
the Goan community of that city, where he owned a pharmacy, the "Farmácia
Internacional" in the "Baixa" and a very good residential house in the
city's posh Sommerschield ward.

Could you send me that scanned image file which you received? I will then be
able to see whether that portrait in military costume is identical to the
one I have.

BTW did you notice that the first letter of each line of Paulo Nazário
Pinto's poem (I have no idea why he wrote it in Konkani) goes on to form the
full name of MAS? - It would indeed be interesting to know what wordings
were engraved on the MAS pedestal in Mapusa and whether there was any poem
in Konkani there.

[Goanet]APARANT MAAND - display of traditional Goan crafts at Mapusa Goa

2004-01-23 Thread godfrey gonsalves
The four day 23rd to 26 Jan 2004 "APARANT MAAND" 2004
got of to a belated start at 6.45 p.m. instead of 4.00
p.m. at the Sri Bodgeshawar Devasthan grounds at
Mapusa. The expo intended to showcase handicrafts art
and culture had just 54 stalls displaying the same the
others like solar heaters automobiles kitchen
appliances were celarly out of place.

The dusty storm played spoil sport and many of those
exhibiting their wares had a tough time.
CM Manohar Parrikar inaugurated the function and
introduce "diwza" as the traditional Goan product to
be presented as State momentos for future.

Mr Ramnath Shet from Chaudi Usgao gave a presentation
of making clay items at a specially erected Maand.

The settings were tastefully decorated. Mr Vasant
Mahalshi from Shristhal Canacona with a 30 member
troupe of women agricultural labour under the banner
"Nuvem Shristhal Lok Kala Patak "presented a colourful
dance. But the winds did not allow the "divlis" to
glow. Speaking to this writer Mr Mahalshi stated that
his troup performs "dhalo fugdi Tonia, mel, goft,
Ghode, Modni at several cultural functions. "In fact
we are now being noticed" he added.

While Mr Damodar Naik Chairman of Goa Handicrafts
Rural and Small Scale Industries Development
Corporation GHRSSIDC demanded that funds be made
available to enhance the scope of artisans coming
forward CM Mr Manohar Parrikar canvassed actively for
his CM Rojgar Yojana which is intended to help those
who lacked finance and others who had problems of
storage. Unlike the Banks who ask for guarantors
collateral security etc his scheme was more flexible
he said. He was confident that 14 Corporations are
steering towards profitablity and atleast 4 or 5 were
definitely like GHRSSIDC and GTDC were showing
positive signs.

The first exhibition of this kind was organised last
year at Fatorda in South Goa. The credit goes to Mr
Damodar Naik the CM added.

Most of the artisans who this writer spoke to had
actually undertaken the activites on their own they
are registered with the Corporation but have yet to
avail assistance others sell their products to them.

Given the Lok Sabha elections the organisor have
spared no efforts to ensure that the CM's and MP North
Goa Shripad Y Naiks photographs have been prominently
displayed on posters and stuck on State Transport
buses. Election stunt one wonders.

Mr Damodar Naik Chairman GHRSSIDC speaking to this
writer when pointed out that the automobiles stall
displayed at the vintage spot marred the otherwise
beautiful settings, explained that they had sponsored
part of the expo and therefore they ought to be given
prime spots.

Mr S Y Shirodkar Manager GHESSIDC agreed that the
exhibits should be on permanent display he said two
such spots were earlier located but abandoned by
previous Governments.

CM Parrikar however assured that this budget will give
a boost to traditional crafts. He demanded that
Ganesh idols only of clay and not of Plaster of paris
be used not owing to environmental concerns but Goa
was a mine of traditional artisans. It was sad to see
that people from Rajasthan and Kashmir sold products
in Goa whereas Goans are not aware where the
traditional items are made. The idea was to spread the
artisans so that the Baga Candolim Calangute belt does
not experience the traffic jam one witnessed this
Christmas season he said. A directory was being
compiled. There was a grand display of fireworks. He
lamented that while artisans from other states filled
the Campal grounds Goan artisans niether had an
opportunity to diplay the same nor had moved outside
the state in the past.

The CM visited all the stalls and evinced keen
interest specially the aritisans and self help groups.

The first day was a poor response being a week end and
friday bazaar but one can expect it to pick up in the

[Goanet]BENEVANGELISTO’S TIATRO IN KUWAIT

2004-01-23 Thread A. Veronica Fernandes
BENEVANGELISTO’S TIATRO IN KUWAIT

All preparations are underway for staging Benevangelisto’s well acclaimed
tiatro “DEVAK ZAI ZALEAR” in Kuwait on 13th of next month at Indian Arts
Circle Funaitees, starting at 3.30 p.m. Beautiful handbills showing
attractive photographs of the artistes are already released today near the
Church and displayed and pasted at some of the strategic locations in
Kuwait. Gate Passes are already available at Raja Stores and with the
organizers. These days there is nothing but talk of “Devak Zai Zalear”
tiatro and all the lovers of tiatro are anxiously awaiting to see this
tiatro. Those who are come forward to help Benevangelisto to stage this
tiatro in Kuwait are very busy with the task ahead and they will leave no
stone unturned to attain success for this tiatro. The organizers besides
being charismatic people, as per my information, are assured total support
by the tiatro lovers in Kuwait, including Goan Organisations and Clubs.
Secondly, this is the first time after a long gap a tiatro troupe is coming
to Kuwait and because of this tiatro lovers are anxiously awaiting seeing
this tiatro of Ben.

About Benevangelisto, he is known as Goa’s best character comedian having
won many times best comedian awards. He rose into fame with his master
piece tiatro “KIDD”. The other masperpiece tiatro of his was “CHONDRIM”
Gulf is not new for him as he already has acted in Kuwait a number of times
earlier. A year back in KKK organized “Songit Sanz” his character role as
“Garamae” and a solo as “Elvis Presely” surely mesmerized the hall packed
audience. Billed as seasons best tiatro in Goa, Ben will this time perform
super character role of late Jacinto Vaz and will render much admired song
of Jacinto Vaz “Abi Tum Lok Bombay Deko”. This song has recently won him
innumerable fans in Dubai where he participated in Mario Menezes tiatro.

The other aritstes who deserve mention are versatile Felcy one of the most
experienced and seasoned females of Goan stage whose acting and singing
styles are unique; Rosy Alvares belonging to the clan of Alvares family
that has given so much for Konkani stage. Rosy Alvares’ beautiful looks,
smart way of singing and very good acting will surely delight the audience.
As it is Rosy Alvares has recently won the prestigeious “Gulab” award for
being the best actress of 2002. She will pair with one of the giants of
Konkani Stage Mario Menezes and both of them will do justice to their roles.
Father and son duo of Young Chico and Jr. Chico first time in Kuwait will
perform together and as promised they will capture the hearts of the
audience by rendering best of songs as never sung before. As per the
organisers, Jr. Chico will devote his best of talents only for this show
along with his father. Mathew Araujo de St. Cruz, the best actor award
winner of Gulab will do his role in a style totally different from what
normally done by normal actors. Baby Hayzel the daughter of well known
stage artiste Milagres de Chandor will perform her role to the best of her
abilities and since she is the daughter of Milagres de Chandor, surely all
eyes will focus on her tenderness. Comedian Sally who is having a vast
following in Kuwait need no much elaboration but along with Benevangelisto
and tall boy comedian Boney (Colva) will keep the audience at the edge of
their seats. Ben will perform a unique role in which audience will see him
as the tallest man on the stage. Connie M. of Fantasy Band fame will render
best of his solos, so also Lawry. Especial musicians will accompany the
troupe from Goa and hence musical part will be taken care of nicely.
Additionally, local artistes will also perform in this tiatro the main one
being by public demand “Michael D’Silva” whose enormous following in Kuwait
will give extra boost to this tiatro.

Since this tiatro will comprise best of artistes consisting of best of
singers and performers of character roles, the audience will surely get
fabulous entertainement. One will hav feast of songs namely solos, duos,
duets, trios etc.

For Entry Passes or for any other information contact the organizers on Tel.
Nos. 7808473 & 9531863.

Dear Emilo Dias,
I have received your article on the Vatican and Racism.

Will an Indian ever become a Pope? Never! Why?
Cos he will not agree to being stripped naked in front of Cardinals, before
the white smoke goes up.
Why are popes stripped naked before, being declared Pope, (Ask ur Cardinal,
if he will talk to u!).
Emilo Joe Dias.
The allegation is based on another rumoured Vatican gossip (there are tons
of which) that an English woman, Joan, succeeded, under male disguise, in
getting elected pope.

Salus,
I was out skiing last week.
A father and his five year old son were waiting
infront of me for the next ski chair to arrive. As the
chair approached, the two of them tried to move
forward to the line where they needed to be to get on
the chair.

As they were moving forward, the five year old slipped
and the ski lift swung forward at the exact same time
and hit the child on the head. The child was thrown
five feet with the impact.

Luckly for both of them, ski helmets are compusory for
kids here in Canada. Else, that ski trip could have
turned into a life long disaster for the two of them.

RE: [Goanet]Protestant/Evangelical Christianity in Goa

2004-01-23 Thread Alfred de Tavares
During the last couple visits to Goa, I have been surprised with a
Gulf-imported sect called "The Believers". However, I din't probe into their
beliefs, having been in no condition to believe in anything much. But, it
was a growing movement, allegedly offering their members enviable insurence,
most importantly temporal, something like craddle-to-grave sucurity.

I would like to learn about them.

Greetings,

I have been asked by friends here in the U.S.A. whether there was any
kind of evangelical Christian movement in Goa similar to the one in
Brasil. Last I'd heard--about 15 years ago--there were a hundred or so
evangelical Christians (mostly ex-Catholics) in Goa. Could somebody
provide me feedback on the current state of protestantism in Goa? (Off
list..if you prefer)
Many thanks,

[Goanet]Helmets

2004-01-23 Thread Salus Correia
Hello Cecil,

I live in Melbourne, and cyclists over here have to use helmets too. It is
a good idea to use the helmets when riding on any two wheeler, motorised or
not. Somehow Goans in Goa seem to be having a problem with that, and we
find it hard to understand why. Safety starts with self, and I think the
Government is right in putting its foot down with the helmet law.

It is also high time safety conciousness and awareness arrives in the
various industries in Goa. Over here all factory workers have to wear steel
capped safety shoes and safety glasses at all times while on the factory
floor. A lot of minor and major accidents are thus averted. So after the
helmet issue, maybe the next thing on the Government's agenda could be the
introduction of 'Safety at the workplaces', and this should also include the
many garages all over the place.

RE: [Goanet]Rickshaw (TUK TUK) Goan Voice

2004-01-23 Thread Nasci Caldeira
Hi Gabe and all interested persons,

The word 'tuk tuk' in english and hinglish refers to the 'tuc tuc' sound
coming from the ticket punch used by tram and bus conductors in Bombay of
yore! My Maths and Science teacher, one Mr Keni also of Goan origin; used to
goad us to study and pass with distinction; saying that if not then the only
job possible would be that of 'tuc tuc' the tram conductor! And how right he
is and was too. I have travelled widely in Thailand, Burma and also in
Calcutta, where rickshas are plying; and they are not called 'tuc tuc'. I
hope this goes some way in clarifying this matter.
Bye.

RE: [Goanet]Excerpt from the Daily Telegraph. Re. SFX. (Goan Voice latest)

2004-01-23 Thread Alfred de Tavares
The Daily Telegraph source is bonkers, whatever that means.

St Francisco Xavier's body was hardly a gift from Cosimo. The silver casket
that contains the body was, I believe. The sarcophagus is also fine
florentine work, Tuscan artisans having been brought over for the purpose.

Had the Medici had any say in the matter the relics might have lain in their
chapel, under the altar Michaelangelo designed for Il Magnifico.

Dates are also wrong. His body was translated to Goa, having earlier been
translated from his original grave on Sangchwan to Malacca, all within under
two decades. The process for canonization, which involved lengthy medical
examinations as well as transfer of an arm and various other body-parts to
Lisbon and Rome was accomplished much under 150 years.

SFX died, accompanied by a Goan-mestizo ("half-caste", in most records), at
the age of 46, December 3, 1552, and canonized 1622.

May he bless us all!

17 Jan. The Daily Telegraph. (London). Perhaps the finest example of
baroque
architecture in India is the Basilica of Bom Jesus, in Goa. The church is
the resting place for the remains of the 16th-century saint, Francis
Xavier,
who was credited with sundry miracles including raising the dead. His body
was brought to Goa almost 150 [sic] years after his death, a gift from
Cosimo III de' Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany.
The feast of St Francis Xavier, celebrated on December 3, attracts
thousands
of pilgrims. However, many hold that the saint initiated the 16th-century
inquisitions, resulting in the destruction of Hindu temples and "infidels"
being burned alive.

Cheers,

2004-01-23 Thread alschultz

Dear Madam , Dear Sir

first of all i want to intoduce myself briefly : my name is Alain SCHULTZ ,
i am french , 38 years old ,married without children for the time being ; i
have been
working for Air France Cargo for 13 years , before that i have been working
for 2 years in a 4 star hotel as a receptionnist ; my wife is a chief
waitress in a restaurant
and has a professionnel degree in that field ;
actually i contact you to ask you for an information : we would like to
establish in Goa and build a new life in your country as we do not see any
good future for us here and therefore decided to emigrate to Goa ; our idea
is to buy a big house or something like that and to do a guesthouse , so to
work in the turism offering acco
modation with a good standing with quality but with average prices ; of
course all this in the local style and so on ;
Goa is interesting too because first the area is pleasant and sunny and
then on the economic and turistic point of view it is a very developing
region with a lot
of opportunities and the state of Goa , i think , is one of the healthiest
state in India ; on an other point of view Goa has a very special position
in India with very
specific traditions and past which is very interesting and caught our
attention .
my problem at the moment i do not know whom to contact in order to know how
to do for all procedures to establish in Goa : could you help me giving me
contacts at local administrations' ? the best would be email in Goa .
so our different questions are as follows : 1/ is it possible for us to
immigrate to Goa ?
2/ is it possible for a foreigner to buy real estate in Goa to grant an
enterprise like a guesthouse ?
3/ what are the different steps we have to do ? etc...
i hope you can help me giving me good tips and emails
looking forward to hearing from you soon
best regards - have a nice day

[Goanet]Bogus News

2004-01-23 Thread A. Veronica Fernandes
---"BHANGAR TUKA" FOR KUWAIT: Rafael de Majorda is proceeding to Kuwait
with his Konkani tiatr "Bhangar Tuka Dilem", which will be staged on
February 13 at the Indian Art Circle, Fanaitees, Kuwait, under the
production of Hilton de Assolna and his troupe, which includes Ana Pereira,
Sharon, Wilmix, comedian Ben Envangelisto, Platilda, comedian Sally,
Marcelin de Betim and Prem Kumar. (H) ---
The above news item appeared in this forum on Goacom Daily News Clippings by
Joel D'Souza on 21.1.04. By reading this news item many people in Kuwait
are surprised. The above news item is fake news, there is no truth in it.
I have already sent my reply to Herald on this news item and I am awaiting
their response. Meantime let me state here why I say the said news item is
fake. First of all on 13th February i.e. next month one Tiatro is already
fixed at Indian Arts Circle and that tiatr "Devak Zai Zalear" is of Ben
Evangelisto who is coming to Kuwait along with his 15 member troupe. Ben
coming to Gulf tour and first stage will be in Kuwait. Secondly, Rafael de
Majorda is no more in Kuwait. Thirdly Hilton de Assolna's name is
unnecessarily involved.

It is my sincere request to all those who are involved in releasing news on
Goan community affairs in Kuwait to make it doubly sure that what they
publish is genuine. Currently in Kuwait we have fake writers and the hero
of all of them is one Webster from Bardez having Camellian height but
cockroachian brain. He is very well versed in changing email addresses
under different names and yet pretends to be totally innocent. Once when I
suspected him of his involvement in such acts of Dr. Jeckeyl and Mr. Hyde he
flatly denied. He is such a rascal Goan that his only motto is to bring
about disgrace on Goan community. He thinks he is Frank Moraes of Kuwait
Goans but in reality he is nothing. His only job is to "Cut the matter from
X source and Paste it on his Y source". Even some of my articles without my
consent he plaguiarised thereby proving that he is nothing but a big "Chor".
Because he is coward to face certain persons, he is pushing either others
or coming out with fake names. The entire Goan community knows his
chickanery. Almost all the cyber persons and owners and administrators of
Websites know that this Webster is a crook. Many times owners and
administrators of Goan Websites told me of chickanery of this Webster. He
is not a sincere person to any one, NOT EVEN TO HIS WIFE. In the past he
tried his best by writing fake news to stop me from writing but he is a
fool. Because he is a chickaner, once he was disgracefully sacked from one
organisation. For the time being I stop here but only hope he will act
saner henceforth otherwise he will not only bring himself into disrepute but
also the forum where he is involved.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.

Dear Joe and all on this trip,
I doubt whether Navy bureaucrats mean any harm but
they don't appreciate history, architecture, etc.
Have you tried contacting someone higher up, or the
CM's of Karnataka or Goa? Some advance planning is
needed to get the wheels turning for such matters. My
best wishes,
Filomena

2004-01-23 Thread Peter Gonsalves
Dear Emilo Dias,
I have received your article on the Vatican and Racism.

I do agree that there are many more saints from Italy, Spain and Europe than
anywhere else in the world. The reason is because of their proximity and
influence in church matters till barely 75 years ago - when the Vatican
state was created, conceding power and prestige to the newly formed
democracies all over Europe (cf. Lateran Pact of 1929)

Metaphorically speaking, yes, there are more Italian saints than people
attending Italian church services. Perhaps, you would be much nearer the
mark if you said there are more Italian saints than there are Italian
children!

But a change has indeed occurred, which your brief article has not taken
cognisance of. In just 25 years, John Paul II has changed the mentality of
the church of Jesus Christ from one that was very Italian (or European) in
outlook to one that embraces the whole world. He is responsible for the
beatification and canonisation of more non-Italian saints than any other
pope in history out of the 474 new saints he has canonised (474 new saints
in all. Between 1588 and 1978, the total number of saints canonized was 296.
source CNS). He has left the Vatican more than a hundred times to reach out
to people all over the world and to make the public statement that the
church of Jesus includes all peoples. His encyclicals and documents that
embrace the world speak for themselves.

For those who have eyes to see, the Holy Spirit is changing the face of the
church - which means changing you and me and making us his people less
prejudiced, less closed in on our cultures and our interests, less 'anti'
and more 'pro' peoples wherever the are found... We need to be part of this
'wind-sweep' that is revolutionizing our narrow thinking... (Joseph Vaz left
the konkan shores to serve a people of a different culture and disguised as
one of those who we consider the lowest even today!)

I can understand your anger at the slow process of the canonisation of
Joseph Vaz, and I do feel it myself. But your article expresses more than
just your anger – it reveals, sadly, a type of irresponsible sensationalism
that could well be accredited to anti-christian fundamentalistic diatribe.
You have written about faith in Joseph Vaz with an attitude that negates all
he ever stood for - faith in the Holy Spirit that has power over
bureaucracy - something that exists in our sometimes all too human church.
The truth is much more subtle and difficult to recognize as it is much more
diffult to accept. If the church were perfect, Emelia, you and I would not
belong!

Let's stop the venom of divisive thinking. Now more than ever we need to be
united in promoting the cause of Joseph Vaz with patience and solidarity
with those who may not understand our urgency - even if they be at the
Vatican. We need to be more united in contributing towards the defraying the
huge costs involved in the making of a saint. We need to be united in
praying for that one important miracle that will help Joseph Vaz make that
leap to sainthood. We need to keep hoping that his documents, lost somewhere
in the thousands of files from a sea of one billion believers that look
forward to the making of their own saints, may be moved ahead so that
sometime soon, the whole church will have St. Joseph Vaz.

Hi Goanetters,
Indian and African priests treated as doormats? who said that!
A doormat will always be a doormat.
As they say in Indian Culture, beating a donkey will not make it a horse.
In the same way, if the Indian priests in Rome are not going to fight for us
from the inside, then we have to fight from the outside.
Fr Agnelo and Pr Jose Vaz has given us faith and Filomena says 'stop it ',
NO we can't. and we will not, Those who tell us to stop, HAVE THEY READ THE
LIFE OF Fr JOSE VAZ?
Lobbying the Vatican is not going to help.
Sri Lankas and Goans should boycot the church. (which will never happen I
know - just a thought).
That will soon make the Vatican make a U turn.
Look at Europe, the pews are empty, churches are turned into Taverns, but
the saints are full, they are every where and more and more white saints are
created WHY? No money coming in.
There are so many white saints they THEY are now praying to the people to
fill the pews in chuches.
39 Married Popes.
Julius the third collected a Male prostitute from the street and mad him a
Cardinal.
Pious the III and Inocent the VI having illegitimate Children.
Just to mention a few, of the atrocities. Vatican Stincks.
There was a time when only Italians could become a Pope.
Pio who was refused priesthood cos he was a dim witt who put acid on his
hands to immitate Jesus is made a Saint, ITALIAN!
Will an Indian ever become a Pope? Never! Why?
Cos he will not agree to being stripped naked in front of Cardinals, before
the white smoke goes up.
Why are popes stripped naked before, being declared

[Goanet]Darya Sangam - explanation in anagram form

Could Joel, Cecil or anybody else clarify what "Darya Sangam" is? I had
never heard or read of a place or locality named thus. I guess it is part of
Campal, a stretch by the river front in Panjim, and that the expression
(nothing to do with Cecil's business!) is in Marathi or Hindi; and I imagine
that "Darya" actually stands for the Konkani word "Dorya" (= Sea). If so,
shouldn't it have been "Nhoim" or "Nodi" which means "River" in "amchi
bhas"? And what is "Sangam"? Shouldn't "river front" be "nhoim fuddo" or
"nodi fuddo" in Goa's language?

Dear Mr. Noronha,

The Campal river/sea front is very difficult to demarcate. When a 5 Star
Hotel comes up in the area it is defined as a 'river front' to get past the
building ban on the sea front. For other technical reasons it is variously
defined as a sea, river, rivulet and stream.

Below are a few anagrams for 'Darya Sangam' for you to understand better.

Say "A Grandma"
A NY gas drama
Mad angry aas
A Madras yang
To answer your query in Hinglish, the anagram below is sufficient:

Damn Sagar ya!

Cheers!

Cecil
