[Goanet]Is a monster born -- 2003?
This scenario is coming threateningly closer as every day passes. The foll. article was written more than a year back. regards, Samir - 2003 : IS A MONSTER BORN - I? January 30, 2003 The biggest company in India's Private Sector needs to be congratulated for their collective genius. Even the Greeks could not entice the Trojans into buying (the Greeks just left the horse behind and the Trojans accepted it as a parting gift) the horse that converted victory into defeat for Troy. In the fiber optic project this group has succeeded in making the people pay (under the umbrella of infrastructure development) for the very chains that could enslave them. The entire story might make an interesting reading and might pack much more punch than any Robert Ludlum thriller. It might be a bible on HOW TO COMPROMISE AND SUBJUGATE A NATION? We are certainly not talking about creating business monopolies for what the company can now do, if it so chooses, is definitely much more than mere business monopolies. We are gaping at probable centralisation of raw power that the country had not seen even under the rule of Aurangazeb. All of us have seen the slogan in the companies advertisement that appeared in the Times of India of Saturday, December 28, 2002 on page number 11 which says "Kar Lo Duniya mutthi mein". Which duniya and whose mutthi? One wonders. Is this slogan a clear definition of the company's final objective? It is for the people of India to decide and act upon. Is this a possible invasion of the fundamental rights of all Indians? There is a distinct possibility that the company might have 100 crore plus slaves to rule without firing a single shot! If such a thing happens all the Arab slave masters would turn in their graves. Then again, under the banner of installation charges/deposit, people might once more pay for the very same chains that could bind them into slavery. And lastly, under the banner of monthly rental or charges, people might continue to pay for their probable enslavement at the company's hands. Fabulous! Once in place and fully operational (we are only imagining the impact on mobile communication today and the full impact of convergence is yet to unfold) the fiber optic project has the potential of monitoring all the communications of the company's patrons, and if used by the company accordingly, might place the company in a unique position of controlling the lives of its customers. In such an eventuality the company would be virtually ruling the country. Everything that is said on the company's network, it could hear. Everything that is written on the company's network, it could read. All the communication on the company's network could be stored and retrieved at the company's directions and will. All this can happen without the knowledge of the company's customers. The company could zero in on anyone and everyone that they choose (for whatever reasons and this fact has to be understood on the background of the current situation where a judicial order is required to tap a single telephone line). This probable scenario makes poor Edgar Hoover look like a nursery school kid. The company's poor customers might not even know what hit them (they might not even know that something hit them) and they might continue to attribute missed opportunities as mere bad luck or stroke of fate. The Convergence Bill was passed at a time that suited the efforts of the company. A lot of apparently mutually exclusive events have taken place that just happen to work in favor of the company. Monthly rental of BSNL/MTNL are climbing. Monthly charges of cable operators are also ever changing and cable operators are constantly at loggerhead with their customers for one reason or another. Ideal environment for the company to enter into the market as a savior and a high quality service provider. Whether this atmosphere was deliberately created or it is a sheer coincidence is for every individual to decide. The company's offer might become instantly acceptable to customers and might be lapped up without much effort and expense on marketing. The company might certainly have long queue of prospective customers eager (read as willing to pay any amount) for it to bestow its high quality services on to them. Little will the poor customer suspect that he is likely to loose his freedom in the bargain. One does not know how many people would have already seen the fine thread that weaves all these seemingly disjoint events into a noose that can virtually strangle our entire nation. The company might destroy a lot of other companies that are currently thriving in the field of communication and entertainment. And then the reign of absolutism might begin. Unimaginable quantum of revenue could be generated that might enable the company to literally buy any and every other business house in India. A truly diabolic scenario. By the time our populace gets wise to these eve

[Goanet]Revoke Paulo Travel's bus permit (for publications)
To Rajan Narayan, Editor Goan Observer. This is to relate my experiences of Paulo Travels. I booked a sleeper ticket to travel from Paulo Travels bus on the 12 th of this month from Bangalore to Margao. The ticket was booked well in advance by paying Rs. 750/-. On arrival at the appointed time at the bus, I found that my ticket number 26 A was also allocated to someone else. Besides, the sleeper number 26 was divided into two sleepers 26A and 26 B. It was not just impossible to climb into the sleeper but I cannot fathom how two people can share the same sleeper, unless they are a husband wife couple or gays/lesbians. Who gave Paulo Travels permit for such an arrangement? The bus was of course full and all people mostly tourists put up with the arrangement. Paulo Travels bus seems only good for pigs to travel in, not human beings. I demand that Paulo Travel's licence be immediately revoked. This is also to let fore-warn Goans what happens if you book your ticket by this Paulo Travels. regards, Samir Kelekar Bangalore

[Goanet]25 DEC 2004: GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS
GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS December 25, 2004 A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS KHUXALBHORIT NATALAM To all the Goanetters on behalf of Goacom and GoaNow CELEBRATIONS FOR THE NATIVITY BEGIN: Christmas descended on Goa today as all over the world with the pealing of bells and church-choirs singing the song of angles, "Glory to God on high, and peace to man on earth" during the celebration of the midnight mass in all parishes of the State. At the Panaji church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, the midnight mass was celebrated outdoors on the landmark steps of the church. The parish priest, Fr Antimo Gomes, concelebrated the Mass with other priests. Prior to the Mass, an enactment of the birth of Christ was also held on the steps. (NT) TOLLING OF BELLS USHER IN CHRISTMAS: Midnight masses, pealing of church bells and fireworks coupled with messages of love, joy and peace ushered in Christmas celebrations in the state of Goa. Most Catholics attended solemn church services on Friday night which included night vigils and carol singing. While the main churches in all the four cities held indoor midnight services, a special mass was celebrated by the Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao at Old Goa and was attended in large numbers by locals and pilgrims who have descended at this world heritage site for the Exposition of St Francis Xavier. (H) GOVERNOR, CHIEF MINISTER, ARCHBISHOP EXTEND GREETINGS: Governor SC Jamir, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Archbishop-Patriarch of Goa and Daman, Filipe Neri Ferrao, have wished the people of Goa on the occasion of Christmas - a feast of joy celebrated in various forms, ranging from the deeply spiritual to the purely secular. (NT) RAVE PARTY KICKS OFF AT ANJUNA: Its about 2.10 pm and the party is kicking at a well-known party zone in Anjuna. Loud music is playing, but who cares.Rave parties are no new feature to Anjuna residents and the drug tourists who visit the State for drugs and 'Goa trance' music. (Sukumar Shastri in Herald) OPPN SEEKS JAMIR'S INTERVENTION: The State president of the Nationalist Congress Party, Dr Wilfred de Souza, met the governor, Mr SC Jamir, on December 24, and requested him to order the State government to withdraw its recently-released CD on documentary film entitled "Goa Freedom Struggle". Describing the CD as "putrid nonsense" and urging the government to hang its head in shame, Dr de Souza said, "I don't know how the government saw it fit to show this CD to the school children. What are you trying to develop? The culture of love or the culture of hatred?" (NT) 'NOTHING WRONG': Reacting to the CD "Goa KA Swadhinta Sangram", the VHP's Vibhag Mantri Manohar Korgaonkar, said, "It might not have been possible to cover the entire gamut of the Goan freedom struggle in the given time limit of the film. But there is nothing wrong in a historical presentation of facts in the light of the conversions undertaken by the missionaries". He was not forthcoming on the possible effects of the violent scenes in the film. "As I have not viewed it, I am unable to comment on the same," he remarked. (GT) 'DEPICTS HISTORICAL FACTS': The well-known freedom fighter and former state police chief, Mr Prabhakar Sinari, said that the documentary film on Goa freedom struggle depicts historical facts - bitter or otherwise - in an authentic manner, however, they may not have been presented in a manner acceptable to general public. (NT) SS BLAMES CONG: The Shiv Sena has blamed the Congress party for creating what it termed as an unnecessary ruckus over the VCD of the film on Goa's liberation struggle. (GT) GPCC BURNS CD: The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee executive on December 24 burnt, literally, a copy of the VCD of the controversial film on Goa's freedom struggle to protest against its production by the Education department and has demanded that the government withdraw it. (H) "INTENTIONALLY PROVOCATIVE AND BIASED": "A documentary on Goa's Liberation struggle is certainly a praiseworthy initiative and honour to the Goans, but the one in question by the State government, is intentionally provocative and biased production, and unfortunately, has turned out to be very insensitive and regrettable," said Delio Mendonca, Director, Xavier Centre of Historical Research. According to him, the main point of disagreement with the VCD is that the film makes a mockery of symbols of Christianity by focusing intensively and extensively on symbols like the churches, cross and holy images (that too out of context) and associating them with the Portuguese colonial power. (Preetu Nair in GT) 'RETURN THE TAMRA PATRA': The tamra patra that they have fraudulently obtained to benefit from the pension and reservation schemes should be returned to the Government. These so called 'freedom fighters' may one day want us to believe that 'Admiral' Thimmaya (a Camotim?), defected from the Bijapur Kingdom, worked with the Vijaynagar Kingdom and Vasco-da-Gama (1502 to 1508) and then led Afonso
[Goanet]Cheapie Brits, complaints about overcharging in Bangalore etc.
Hi: I have been following the arguments about a hotel in Bangalore overcharging Gabriel and co. I am afraid even if a complaint is filed, unless it is diligently followed up for months and may be years, not much will come out of it. The costs and time involved in doing so itself makes it unviable. Ideally, Gabriel shouldn't have paid, but even there he has to stick his ground, be forceful talking to the management, not pay more and get out of the restaurant. Cheating abounds all over India and really in terms of consequences it is a minor problem compared to communalism and other issues as long as the amount is not much. Today in India, Reliance is buying up the whole govt., breaking laws left right and center, and there is no soul in India who is willing to do anything about it. regards, Samir Kelekar Bangalore

Philip and all: The 9-11 commission report is best used as a paper-weight. It is written by mostly white males in the USA who understand little about the Middle East. It could have been about the most significant problem confronting peace in the Middle East and reducing a significant source of terrorism (the Israel-Palestine problem). Instead, the more popular explanation - Islamic terrorism is used for a Christian audience. Islamic terrorism is code (or politically correct in certain circles) for being anti-Muslim. No mention of any Israeli terrorism is made: neither the terrorism that radical Israeli settlers practice or the state-sponsored Israeli genocide on innocent Palestinians. Imagine a report written by white European cardinals in the Vatican on Islam in the Middle East. What credibility would it have if there was no experience of the real truth? The report would serve as toilet paper - if it was soft enough. Regards, George --- Philip Thomas <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I have recently obtained copies of the following books: > > 1. On Fri, 24 Dec 2004, Eddie Fernandes wrote: No one has questioned the claim by India's Union Tourism Minister that British visit Goa with their chefs, cooks and butlers and enjoy a cheap holiday. In the UK, it is only the multi-millionaires who can afford to employ chefs and butlers and the amount they spend in renting a villa outstrips the expenditure by any other class of tourist. The main provider of rental holiday accommodation has a website at http://www.lazydays.co.uk/ Check their rates. A villa in Nerul, for example, has a peak season rent of Rs 3 lakhs per week ( air fares are excluded) On the other hand, many middle class Indian tourists visit Goa with their cooks/maids/ayahs. Hi Eddie: A politician's hyperbole does not negate the existance of an issue, which has been debated often on Goanet (and which expats tend to view defensively, IMHO). Re the Rs 300,000 per week villa at Nerul at peak season, I wonder who's making the money. Let me know if home-owners (specially those expats who got pushed into going in for rent-backs) make anything of a fraction of this money. Also, the actual impact of tourism -- millionaires, butlers, chefs, cooks or whoever -- on the local real estate reality has not been adequately looked at. I know quite a large section of people who have put in a life of hard work and who would probably never be able to afford a decent home in Goa, thanks to the real estate boom which in significant part is tourism-generated. Are expat Goans willing to call a spade a spade, or just build arguments to be defensive over a situation which is to their advantage? Sorry for this bluntspeak. No offence meant. FN

TO: Tariq Siddiqui <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mario Goveia wrote (to Ronald): > People know WMDs were not found after the regime > change. The question is, what happened to the WMDs > not accounted for. Mr. Albuquerque steadfastly > dodges this question. Before Ronald can reply, his buddy, Tariq, jumps in: Don't you find it a tad bit hypocritical of accusing Ronald of dodging this question? Did you ever think that this question should be answered by those who led this country into a war? But of course, this question will never be asked or answered because all the chickenhawks know there are no WMDs. Instead, this argument is changed to one of democracy and freedom and those who called out the liars for what they were, are asked to answer for the "missing" WMDs and accused of subverting democracy. Mario replies: Tariq, not to belabor the point, but even if you are right about everything (which you are not), and everyone else except you and Ronald and a couple of your cabal are liars, IT DOES NOT MATTER!!! The Iraqis are going to get their freedom and democracy no matter what you guys want to believe! Don't you get it? The era of Sunni Baathist brutality and domination in Iraq is OVER! However, since you asked the question, my answer is, No! I don't find asking Ronald anything I want to is hypocritical. If asking him why he won't answer a question is "accusing" him of not answering a question, then I am guilty of accusing him of not answering the question. You may enjoy insulting US leaders by calling them "chicken-hawks", but the fact is that the REAL warriors who are risking their lives on behalf of the Iraqis, as opposed to the "chicken-little" armchair critics like yourselves, voted overwhelmingly for the re-election of the "chicken-hawks" to lead them. The people who decided to go to war made their decision based on the fact that Saddam was refusing to account for the WMDs as required under UN resolution 1441 and the 16 others prior to that. Since they did not find the stockpiles that they expected in the obvious locations, it is still an open question as to whether they are still buried in the Iraqi desert or moved to Syria. The WMDs have never been accounted for, so for Ronald and you to claim that "there are no WMDs" is to state the obvious as to what has not been found, but does not answer the question of what happened to the WMDs that everyone knows he had. What don't you understand about this question? Wait a minute! Something just occurred to me. Do you two believe that Iraq NEVER had WMDs? Do you believe that Iraq never used WMDs against Iran, the Kurds at Halabja, and the Shia in the delta? Do you believe that Saddam did not acknowledge having WMDs in the 1991 ceasefire agreement and agreed to destroy what he had and provide the UN with an accounting? Do you believe there were no UN resolutions (there were 17) demanding that Saddam comply with the 1991 ceasefire agreement and account for his WMDs? Why do you two believe the UN imposed crippling economic sanctions on Iraq from 1991 on? Do you two actually believe that Saddam lost his dictatorship when he could have saved himself by disclosing to the world, WHAT YOU TWO KNOW FOR SURE, that he had no WMDs? If you two believe all this, I have a bridge in NY I have for sale that your gang can be partners in.

I also hope that the "insourcing" jobs that you refer to, are not the type that all the training required is to say, "Would you like fries with that?" Mario replies: Obviously you have no idea what you are talking about. Regardless of what you read in the Globe & Mail, there are no special tax breaks in the US for sending jobs abroad, but there are no restrictions against sending jobs abroad. Since you seem to be unaware of all the foreign companies that are placing their offices and plants in the US, I will give you a couple: Toyota and Honda are two that even you may recognize. The US has gained far more jobs from foreign companies in the US than the jobs that have been outsourced, many to India.

Re: [Goanet]Cheapie Brits visiting Goa along their butlers, chefs and cooks
Fred, The posts, including yours, seem to be going round in circles. The issue surely is that there are no objections to a surcharge if this is made explicit, even in small print, and drawn to one's attention, in whatever way possible, before one orders a meal in a restaurant to allow the tourist to decide to eat in one place or another. This did not seem to have happened in the case of Gabriel and he surely made this point, ever so clearly, not to require this circuitous series of posts. If an Indian tourist had a surcharge demanded from him, at a restaurant, without due prior notice/attention, in the UK, not only would it be illegal but the establishment would risk censure in the media and even boycott if this came to light. This is regardless of the fact that the same Indian injured crossing the road would receive free emergency medical services and of a quality equal to that for any permanent resident in the country. The point I am making is that the waters do not need to be muddied with irrelevant and extraneous arguments as has happened on this issue. Most certainly, every Western tourist knows he/she is getting agood deal in India because of the current exchange rate. Most would feel comfortable to pay extra, if necessary, as long as they do not feel ripped off. To reiterate, I don't think there is much objection to the principle of a surcharge to tourists but it is a question of how it is yanked out of them. All that is asked for, and very reasonably so, is that they get to know about any surcharge prior to the consumption of a service and not held to ransom by a hidden and undisclosed charge after the meal or whatever. This should be true in India or anywhere else, irrespective, of a country's stage of economic development. Minimally, it is an intelligent way of buying goodwill for better tips and increased tourism. Instead of going round in circles on Goanet, I think all of us would be better served if the simple points made above were drawn to the attention of the Indian Tourist Board. The global competition for tourists is intense and India cannot afford to be out on a limb. Cornel

[Goanet]GoanetReader -- From Verna to glaciers and penguins...
FROM VERNA TO GLACIERS AND PENGUINS, A LONG ROAD FOR HELGA GOMES Was she really the first Goan woman to reach Antarctica? Goans love to debate -- sometimes, seemingly endlessly -- and this became the topic for an online discussion. Whatever the case, we take pride in the fact that an active Goanetter is reaching the icy continent. On December 25, 2004, when Goa and the many tourists that crowd here at this time of the year keep busy celebrating Christmas, Maria Fatima Helga do Rosario Gomes is a long, long way from home. She crosses the Antarctic Circle. In an email interview done from board the ship, she told GOANET's Frederick Noronha <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: "I think there is going to be a bit of hazing. We sited our first iceberg; it was huge and had really sharp edges." And while getting closer to the icy shores, the lady who deftly sailed through many a choppy cyber-debate earlier remembered and requested Goanet's news updates on her on-board address! If you would like to send in a short message to her, send it in via Goanet and we'll make sure it gets passed on. She added: "We are heading south to the Ross Sea at break-neck speed to sample into the big phytoplankton blooms that we see on the satellite images. In the meantime, a huge iceberg has made things difficult for the US Coast Guard vessels that are cutting a channel to allow fuel and supply vessels to get to McMurdo, the US permanent base. As usual all our well oiled plans can turn to chaos if weather gets unpredictable but we are optimistic we can do everything we planned." We took the opportunity of pinning down Helga, as most Goanetters know her, to raise questions about education in Goa, what she sees as the State's missed potential, and how our children can think of opening their eyes to wider horizons. Extracts from the interview: * Do tell us about your trajectory from the Goa-based National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) to now. Also, about your education in Goa... * I studied at the Marina English High School in Verna, and after the customary (for that time!) BSc in Chemistry, I went on to do my Masters in Microbiology at the now defunct Post Graduate Center which was affiliated to the Bombay University. I enjoyed the curriculum and the teachers and especially my project, which was working on mangroves of the Mandovi estuary. It got me interested in pursuing a career in research. Then, I joined the NIO as a CSIR (Center of Scientific and Industrial Research) fellow and began a new career in Oceanography. Subsequently, I got a Ph.D and then went on to do Post Doctoral work in the field of ocean color and satellite remote sensing. I left Goa in 1992 to join my husband in Japan, where he was pursuing his Ph D at the Nagoya University. After seven years of working at the University and enjoying Japanese culture, we moved to the Bigelow Laboratory of Ocean Sciences in Maine, USA. It seemed like we have come a full circle because while at the NIO, we had read and followed the work of Bigelow scientists. Dr. Charlie Yentsch, the founder of Bigelow Laboratory hooked a camera onto the Soyuz and got one of the first ocean color pictures -- a topic that has interested me since my Post Doc days at the NIO. * What's your current assignment about? * Our research expedition is sponsored by the National Science Foundation of the United States, and our mission forms part of a larger effort by the USA and several other countries to understand the long-term consequences of the sun's harmful UV radiation for life on our planet. In human beings, it is well known that prolonged exposure to solar UV radiation can cause skin cancer, but its consequences for animal and plant life on land and in the sea are not well understood. During this cruise to the Antarctic Ocean, the focus of my research will be on photo-synthetic processes in phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are the base of the Antarctic marine food chain which extends from phytoplankton to krill and whales. By virtue of their ability to photosynthesize, phytoplankton are also responsible for removing a large fraction of the excess carbon dioxide that is increasing in the earth's atmosphere. The final questions we hope to answer are: How does UV light effect the food chain? How will the increase in UV affect the ability of the oceans to absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas responsible for global warming? * Were you excited about it? * I am very excited about going to the Antarctica because it is majestic, grand and yet has an element of dan

Gabe, Two brief comments re your posts. Was Sunday mass attendance not made obligatory under the risk of mortal sin so as to ensure that money could be obtained via the collection tray, and was not the concept of 'buying' indulgences for now or the after life a means of sustaining Church coffers? Just a thought as to why you may not specifically have paid your priest, up front, for your last Sunday mass service! Different businesses have diferrent ways of raising money surely. On another point re the often made comment on India and China becoming economic superpowers in the near future, I feel that India has much to learn from China regarding the production of quality goods. Years ago, I used to get really upset when non Indians, said that India produced shoddy goods. I am afraid I think they were right in many cases. My experience over the years has been that Indian made merchandise falls apart fairly soon after purchase. This may be because the idea of a repair man, round the corner, still exists and despite labour costs being similar in both countries. However, when goods are made in China for export, they are made to last trouble-free for a while. China is today the workshop of the world because of its attention to quality from the humble calculator to the sophisticated camera, electrical equipment, and the upper range Mercedes Benz saloon. In contrast, an expensive clock made in India will need repairs within a year in my experience and be best thrown out. As an Indian, it really pains me to say this but I wish this was not so. Cornel
Re: [Goanet]Cheapie Brits visiting Goa along their butlers, chefs and cooks
No one has questioned the claim by India's Union Tourism Minister that British visit Goa with their chefs, cooks and butlers and enjoy a cheap holiday. Why don't you look at the facts yourself and use logic thereafter? a) Why don't you know about all the 17 UN resolutions from 1991 to 2003, and what they were all about? What were the economic sanctions imposed on Iraq all about? How come you can claim that President Bush misled everyone, when he only became President in 2001, ten years after the first UN resolution demanding from Saddam an accounting of his WMDs? If you used your logic honestly and consistently you should be saying that the entire UN was misleading the world since 1991 that Saddam had WMDs. b) Are you against freedom and democracy for the Iraqis? [Goanet]CHRISTMAS JOYS
CHRISTMAS JOYS Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ, who is the saviour of the humanity. Christmas has always been one of my favorite times of the year as also for everyone through out the world. The magical events of Christmas are believed to hold every heart of ours with joy and freshness. These magical events have been re-created in the many traditions followed during Christmas. The Christmas tree, the star, and Santa Claus are some traditions that all combine to form the spirit of Christmas. Christmas is for joy, for giving and sharing, for laughter, for reuniting with family and friends, but mostly, Christmas is for love. However, no matter which part of the world you are in, the tradition of Christmas blossoms with fun and celebration and carries along with it faith, hope and love. It is a combination, which gives a touch of liveliness and harmony to the season of celebrations. The Christmas spirit is all about caring and sharing with your loved ones. Moreover, what best way to express these feelings than gifts? Christmas, in many ways is the season to give gifts to the loved ones. For us, Christmas in a unique experience, as we lay out a variety of Christmas sweets and culinary delights. In certain places specially in the villages, ladies in the neighborhood get together as they draw up a schedule so that they can reach out and help one another in preparing sweets. This is all done in the true spirit of love, goodwill and friendship. Christmas is surely incomplete without Santa. His roaring laughter and gifts that he brings along are an integral part of Christmas, more so for children. They keep peeping out through the windows waiting for Santa's arrival. Santa is believed to have come riding through the snow on the carriage pulled by reindeers, led by his favorite Rudolph-- the red-nosed reindeer. Children just loved the Santa and eagerly wait for his arrival. Children believe that Santa Claus gets gifts for them. As a result many of them leave stockings so that Santa can put their gifts in it, some little ones hang sack of pillows instead of stockings. Others even decorate their Christmas list and put it on the windowsill along with a little bit of sugar so that Father Christmas won't miss them I clearly remember when I tried to tell my son about Santa Clause, he looked amazed and asked me how can the Santa visits all the homes in the world on Christmas eve, especially when he comes down the chimney, which is not the quickest way to enter a home and he also wanted to know what happens to the homes which have no chimney, infact, he was thinking of our home. I was so amazed at the logical question from my child that I just walked away, muttering under my breath!! Midnight mass and day services are held in the Churches during the eve and the day of Christmas. The message and sermons of love and redemption are given out. Large numbers of people gather to pray and thank god for His sacrifices that have saved humanity. May the birth of Baby Jesus bring in lots of peace and love to our selves and to the entire world. The film which my good friend Miguel is (rightly) voicing concern over and Miguel himself are both using the same idiom, on this one aspect. In one of the scene of the by-now famous education department film (everyone should try and see it, to see what happens when a government thinks along communal lines!), a lady hands over bangles to one official. If this is not male chauvinism, I don't know what is. You don't need to be a 'man' to be brave. All men are not brave. Some women were freedom-fighters too. From my college days, I've known quite a few women who were committed to an ideal, and they showed much more commitment and consistency than many men I know. So, what are we talking about? Don't we see through the irony of what this 'wear bangles' idiom means? FN PS: This is a minor side-debate. Otherwise Miguel has done a good job of highlighting an issue which needs utmost attention.
[Goanet]'Twas the night Jesus came
'Twas the night Jesus came and all through the house, not a person was praying, not one in the house.. The Bible was left on the shelf without care, for no one thought Jesus would come there.. The children were dressing to crawl into bed, not once ever kneeling or bowing their head.. And Mom in the rocking chair with babe on her lap, was watching the Late Show as I took a nap.. When out of the east there rose such a clatter, I sprang to my feet to see what was the matter.. Away to the window I flew like a flash, tore open the shutters and lifted the sash.. When what to my wondering eyes should appear, but Angels proclaiming that Jesus was here.. The light of His face made me cover my head... was Jesus returning just like He'd said.. And though I possessed worldly wisdom and wealth, I cried when I saw Him in spite of myself.. In the Book of Life which he held in his hand, was written the name of every saved man.. He spoke not a word as he searched for my name, when He said "it's not here" My head hung in shame.. The people whose names had been written with love, He gathered to take to his Father above.. With those who were ready He rose without sound, while all of the others were left standing around... I fell to my knees but it was too late, I'd waited too long and thus sealed my fate. I stood and I cried as they rose out of sight, Oh, if only I'd known that this was the night In the words of this poem the meaning is clear the coming of Jesus is now drawing near... There's only one life and when comes the last call, We'll find out that the Bible was true after all... Please send this to as many people as possible... JESUS LOVES YOU Cynthia

[Goanet]Press Statement Re: Goa's Liberation Film Documentary VCD by Goa Education Department
24 December 2004 To: Goanet Administrator/s. For kind favour of publication Thanking you and wishing you a Merry Christmas. Sd/- for Goa Su-Raj Party Floriano Lobo President *** PRESS STATEMENT Subject: Release of VCD on "Goa's Liberation" by Goa Education Department: The Goa Su-Raj Party thanks Goa's Chief Minister Mr. Manohar Parrikar in a special way for this unique gift he has given to Goa and Goans through the release of the documentary film on Goa's Liberation focusing on Goa's prolonged fight for freedom from the longstanding Portuguese colonial rulers. From the very beginning, when Mr. Manohar Parrikar took over the reins of Goa's administration as its Chief Minister, we have warned peace loving Goans on several occasions to be alert and watchful for religious strifes of the kind that has never been seen in Goa before. We have known Mr. Manohar Parrikar to be the RSS ideologue, which he himself soon proved to one and all by donning RSS's uniform at the RSS's parade at parade grounds, Campal, Panjim. Subsequently, we have the Panjim's Fontainhas' degrading episode, the Bishop's Palace incidence, the desecration of Sanguem temple and other instances where these should have been an eye opener to all sections of Goans who value secular principles. But the effect of super-camouflaging utilized by Manohar Parriker to deflect the attention of Goans to his massive saffronisation process of Goa's administrative services was to blind gullible Goans to the true colours of the ruling RSS-BJP dispensation. This film documentary is the ultimate expose', not only of the RSS-BJP's ultimate intentions for Goa, but the intentions of Mr. Manohar Parrikar himself in particular. If Goans should opt to remain complacent after this expose', they will only have themselves to blame for what is to come. Goa Su-Raj Party congratulates Goa's freedom fighters who have univocally denounced the compilation and the release of this vile documentary film. The statement made by GPYC's Girish Chodankar is wanting in its definition. Goans have no reason to 'suspect' the RSS hand on Goa's liberation VCD. Goans are pointing their fingers at Mr. Manohar Parrikar and Mr. Manohar Parrikar alone for having a hand in this venture. Goa has had RSS leaders and RSS sympathizers before. But none of them had the temerity to expose themselves openly and blatantly. With Manohar Parrikar at the helm of affairs in Goa, they have been emboldened like never before. And we see their handiwork all too well. Naguesh Karmali, the tamra patra freedom fighter, Mr. Pawar of the education department, Mr. Ramakant Angle, ex-MP and all those who have and are defending this affront on Goa's liberation, stand exposed as RSS family members who would like nothing better than for Goa to follow in the foot-steps of Narendra Modi's Gujarat. We, Goans, cannot wish things away by merely not speaking about them. The Goa BJP delegation has rightly visited the Governor of Goa Mr. S.C. Jamir to submit to him a memorandum, and to remind him of his constitutional duties and obligations. The only constitutional duty the Governor must boldly exercise is to dissolve the present Parrikar government and bring in President's Rule. This constitutional duty of the Governor will go a long way in safe-guarding the secular principles enshrined in our Constitution which are openly threatened by the RSS-BJP government in Goa, more so, through this despicable film documentary. Goans of all walks of life, whether Hindus, Muslims, Christians or others, arise in one voice to hold the Governor of Goa accountable in fulfilling his Constitutional obligations NOW, and not fall prey to indecisiveness and procrastination. END.
Re: [Goanet]Cheapie Brits visiting Goa along their butlers, chefs and cooks
Tim, I think every country discriminates against non-nationals in some way or the other. (Trying being Indian, brown and getting a holiday visa to the US!) So what are we really complaining about? In the case of India, this comes in the shape of an economic surcharge. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but this happens in only a very limited number of hotels, while the rail and air foreigner-rates don't add up for much. On the other hand, isn't it a scam that international tourism today -- specially when involving the so-called 'developing countries' -- is premised on the fact that people from the affluent world can get an almost-free holiday in a world where a lot of people still starve or suffer from a lack of food and resources? (Don't turn around to say there are people who gain from tourism, and hence keep inviting the guests over.) Hi Albertina What Minguel says is better said in Konkani "Samki bail mure!" It simply means the man lacks courage of conviction. And what it means certainly does not belittle women I suppose. It's just a traditional phrase. Of course that is not denying that many women are indeed courageous. The gamble paid off. If India is today, along with China, well on the way to becoming one of the economic powerhouses of the 21st century, much of the credit can be given to Rao. In introducing his reforms, he was ably assisted by his quiet but focused finance minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, who became India's 13th prime minister earlier this year. Although economic liberalisation had started with his predecessors, Indira Gandhi and her son Rajiv, the process was accelerated by Rao when he took over as India's ninth prime minister on June 21 1991, a week before his 70th birthday. By Indian standards this was not particularly old, but Rao had been in semi-retirement for the previous 18 months and had packed his large library of books in preparation for a life of scholarly seclusion in Hyderabad. What brought Rao back from the political wilderness was the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, who had been in power, lost it and was apparently on his way back to the prime minister's job when he was blown up by a female Tamil suicide-bomber in the middle of an election campaign. Since Rajiv's mother, too, had been assassinated (in 1984), there were real worries that Indian democracy might be derailed. With the country in turmoil, Rajiv Gandhi's Congress Party turned to Rao as a stop-gap leader. He took over at a time when India was facing its worst economic crisis since independence from Britain in 1947: inflation was running at 17 per cent and the country had some £50 billion of foreign debt. But having won the election, Rao chose to stay on, and proved to be the leader who dragged the Indian economy from the old to the new. In his personal demeanour, Rao was an austere, erudite man with a long history of service to the Nehru/Gandhi family and to India - he had served as foreign minister and defence minister as well as chief minister of his own state, Andhra Pradesh. This explains why the country was so shocked when he was convicted in 2000 of having bribed four members of parliament to support his government in a no-confidence motion in 1993. He was given a three-year prison sentence, the first prime minister to be thus humiliated; but, because of the time taken over the appeal, he did not actually have to spend any time in jail. A court later quashed the charges against Rao and his co-accused, but his reputation inevitably remained tarnished. After stepping down as prime minister, Rao wrote a long English-language novel, The Insider. Although a dense book about land reform, it was billed as "the novel that tells the explosive truth about Indian politics". The book attracted some notoriety because of a sexually explicit passage, this being completely out of character with Rao's dour, unsmiling image. During a publicity tour, he launched the book at the Nehru Centre in London, where an Indian woman was unwise enough to ask him: "Mr Prime Minister, is the sexy passage from your imagination or your memory?" An angry Rao considered the question to be in poor taste, and chastised his questioner: "I never thought NRIs (Non-Resident Indians) could be so despicable." In recognition of Rao's international stature, Madame Tussaud's made a waxwork model of him, one of only a very few Indians who have been so honoured. When the Indian prime minister flew to London and stood next to his model for the unveiling, as is the custom, a British journalist remarked unkindly: "The wax model looks livelier." Later, when Rao was going through the bribery scandal, Madame Tussaud's removed the waxwork from public view and substituted one of the Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan. Pamulaparti Venkata (always abbreviated to PV) Narasimha Rao was born on June 28 1921 at Karimnagar in Andhra Pradesh, where his Brahmin family had a large farm. After taking degrees in Science and Law at Osmania and Nagpur universities, he found a job as a reporter with a weekly newspaper. In 1957 Rao was elected to the Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly, where he retained his seat for the next 20 years. In 1962 he became a minister in the state government, and in 1971 was made chief minister. In this post he put a limit on the size of agricultural holdings, alienating large landowners in the process, even though he himself gave up all but 120 acres of his 1,200 acres of property (all this would later provide somewhat dull material for his novel). In 1974 he was appointed general secretary of the Congress Party's national governing co

[Goanet]Authors, editors, manuscripts, and fees
Dear Goanetters, Like Margaret Mascarenhas, I am both an author and an editor, and although we work in far different parts of the world---she in Goa and Mumbai, I in Goa but mostly in New York---we have this in common: we help other deserving writers as much as we can. Like writing, editing is a demanding job. It's not just a question of putting in a comma here and a full stop there; in what is called "substantive editing", a good editor will spend hours recasting individual sentences, and sometimes entire passages, in order to make them read more smoothly, or make their meaning clear. Sometimes this type of time-consuming editing has to be done even with manuscripts by authors who have an international reputation. Obviously, there are limits as to how much time we can spare to edit somebody else's work, since we have our own writing to do; and because our time is limited, we need to focus on the most deserving of the many deserving writers who continually seek our help. How do I define a "deserving" writer? To me, a deserving writer is one who already writes well, at or near professional standards, but needs some editorial pointers to put his or her work over the top. A good writer who is poor would be deserving of help; a writer who writes less well would produce work that would need a lot of editing, and that would take up more time than I, for one, would be able to give. A writer in that situation would be better off going to a writing teacher. The pressure on our time, as I mentioned earlier, stems in part from the fact that we have our own creative writing to do. Fortunately, unlike the situation in Goa, here in New York we have a breed of professional editors who are not writers, but focus entirely on editing; alas---one must pay through the nose for their expertise and their services, $50 and more an hour. At that rate, Rs. 5,000 would buy a writer about two and a half hours of editing time, enough to take care of between 20 and 60 pages, depending on the quality of the writing. Why shouldn't editors charge for their painstaking work? We pay carpenters for repairing our doors, electricians for replacing the wiring in our homes, priests for saying a mass or blessing a house, doctors for feeling our pulse and prescribing an aspirin, lawyers for preparing a letter, teachers for tutoring our children; but some of us expect writers to give us their books as gifts, and editors to edit our work for nothing. It does not make sense. Regards, Victor Rangel-Ribeiro

[Goanet]Talking Movies At Xavier's
Talking Movies At Xavier's While the fever of the International Film Festival of India began to subside in Panaji, the Film Club of St. Xavier's College, Mapusa generated its own heat during a three-day festival of "Films with a difference", the club comprising of students interested in theatre as well as films and media, invited Ms. Gayathri Konkar of `Moving Images' to screen and conduct discussions on a selection of special films on the 14th, 15th and 16th of December, 04. The festival coincided with the three-day Fete commemorating the closing of the College Ruby Jubilee Year. 'The Colour of Paradise' is a multiple award winning film by the Iranian director Majid Majidi. The story of the young blind boy Mohammed and his innocent quest for love and acceptance in the 'normal' world around him, moved the audience to silent tears. Majidi's fine handling of the simple story-line, combined with breathtaking cinematography, was a celebration not only of the rare natural beauty of Iran, but also of the 'other kind' of film. Director Antonio Pedro Vasconcelos', Cannes, Best Debut award-winning feature film 'Jaime' was a stark exposé of the dark world of the poor and unemployed youth of Portugal Vasconcelo handles this universal theme with a moving yet unpretentious honesty, portraying the plight of the eponymous hero with a sensitivity rarely seen in most contemporary mainstream films. The screening of Alan Parker's gripping American Civil rights era film, 'Mississippi Burning' starring, Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe, served as an appropriate sounding board for generating a healthy discussion on the differences between Art films and mainstream 'flicks'. The general observation was that the latter category tended to depend largely on powerful background scores and the rapid shifting of scenes to hold audience attention, while the former moved at a more deliberate pace, dwelling on subtle details, using natural sound effects to cater to the taste of a more focused and perhaps sensitive audience. The French film 'The Fabulous Destiny of Amelie Poulaine'and 'The Victor Weeps' a powerful documentary on the plight of the Afghan refugee produced by world class photographer Fazal Sheikh, provided that additional dimension to the viewers perspective of the silver screen. On the whole, the free screening of movies on campus and the interesting discussions on themes, Cinematography, Art versus mainstream film etc. that were generated after each screening, was a truly enriching learning experience. "We were fortunate to be given the opportunity to watch and appreciate such interesting and inspiring films at no cost" and "...even though the films were in different languages, we didnt mind reading the subtitles because they all tell a unique story" said one of the students, echoing the general feeling after the festival. It is interesting to note that in addition to being one of the few colleges in Goa to have a Theatre Club, St. Xavier's is now perhaps the only colleges to have successfully hosted their own film festival. The students are already looking forward to the next St. Xavier's "Film Festival With A Difference" which is set to run for a longer duration and showcase a wider variety of films. The festival was coordinated by Ms. Alice D'Cruz, the Head of the Department of English.

[Goanet]Manifestly, His is a birthday worth celebrating
Manifestly, His is a birthday worth celebrating December 24, 2004/Sydney Morning Herald The death in October of the French philosopher Jacques Derrida saw the passing of one of the more influential intellects of the past 50 years, but not of the school of thought he inspired - deconstructionism or postmodernism. Derrida advanced a loosely conceived notion that nothing can be said to exist beyond the language used to describe it. He held that all knowledge is socially constructed, that the meaning of words is essentially arbitrary and subject to interpretation so that reality is ultimately unknowable. These propositions have been used to argue that there is no such thing as objective truth, only an endless multiplicity of subjective truths. "Outside of the text there is nothing," argued Derrida. And inside it, say his champions, is nothing but a string of infinite possibilities. In response to the latter argument, The Spectator magazine in Britain headlined an article on Derrida's death: "Is Derrida really dead?" The headline was irreverent sarcasm and a comment on the intellectual nihilism of the age which regularly manifests itself in protests at the public celebration of the Christian core of Christmas because it might offend the sensibilities of non-Christians or perhaps because it is judged to be no more than a collective delusion. This intellectual nihilism is interpreted to mean that ideas are less important than the way they are expressed, that an idea has no more value than the way that it is interpreted by anyone who may receive it, and that no firm conclusions can be drawn about anything. The postmodernist critique elevates respect for others into a kind of uncritical celebration of difference. One manifestation is political correctness. Another is the so-called cultural war in the West in which many postmodernists deny the validity of authority, tradition or custom of any kind. Such thinking has obvious appeal. It offers a freedom from the discipline of scholarship and the responsibilities of truth (because all disciplines are arbitrary and all truths relative). It rejects established social, moral and political values (because none can ever have a higher claim than any others). It also suits the individualistic attitudes of the day - the demand that the self is master of its own destiny unbridled by any need to consider others. Derrida might not have agreed with the lengths to which his ideas have been taken. There is no contradiction, for instance, between what he wrote and the need for moral principles such as equality, justice and generosity. And while Derrida did argue that objective truth is beyond our grasp, that is not to say that it does not exist, only that it can never be entirely understood or communicated with precision. If ever there was a story that could be dismissed as a mere social construction it is the story of Christmas. The gospel writers who told the story of the nativity were not drawing on eyewitness accounts or documentary evidence. Their reports are inconsistent, even contradictory. The story has been embellished over the centuries by believers and non-believers to the point where, in its popular representation, Christmas is a strange mix of the religious and the secular, of the spiritual and the purely gaudy, of the inspirational and the crassly commercial. Yet peel back the layers of interpretation and adaptation, dismantle (or deconstruct) the narrative devices employed in the Christmas story and one is still left with a central message that, in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, God became incarnate in human affairs. This incarnation reveals something of the nature of God and the destiny of human kind. God offers new life in the form of a newborn child, and like a child, He offers it unconditionally. Those who accept the offer, however, are born anew and their lives and deaths take on new meaning within the divine plan of redemption. The gospel of John anticipates a postmodernist critique of this message. The spirit of God that dwells in Jesus Christ, it says, was active in every human being before the incarnation. It was a yearning for the light which shines in darkness although "the darkness comprehended it not". This yearning was not created by the doctrines of the church or of other human constructions. It is innate. That is why the central message of Christmas - as distinct from the details of the story - has remained consistent for two millennia and has been received into virtually every culture on earth. Derrida foresaw the dangerous polarisation of the world into fundamentalist creeds held by people who confidently assert that religion offers clear meaning and certainty. Religion, Derrida has argued, is important precisely because it calls into question all certainty and security and the arrogance that parades as conviction. This, too, is inherent in the Christmas story. The Messiah comes

[Goanet]Media and corruption -- from watchdog to lapdog
The article by Rajdeep Sardesai posted by Fredrick Noronha makes for somewhat depressing reading. Particularly when Rajdeep says: "In the years since being a cub reporter, I have realised that a mithai box is only loose change in the institutionalised corruption that is part of the journalistic profession." And: "Some of the old-timers would whisper and suggest that this 'corruption' of the media is only a new trend, that it is only a reflection of a general fall in journalistic norms and values. That is a whole load of rubbish. Let us get it straight: the kind of media corruption that we are witnessing today is no Murdochian conspiracy as some would have us believe. It is the product of an incestuous system and a journalistic milieu which for a long time has survived on mutual benefit." In the circumstances, should we not take any of the investigative reporting, or whatever, with a huge pinch of salt. While reading the article by Rajdeep, my depression increased, because nowhere does he say that he returned the mithai parcel or the bottle of whiskey. Yes, he has said that he pays for the accommodation and travel in one case. But he seems to be selective in his acceptance of hospitality. Perhaps the journalists should have a rule on acceptance of gifts - namely, they should not accept it, and if given should be returned. [Goanet]The Mom Before Christmas
To: All the Moms - may they hv more power to their arms n hearts tooChris Twas the night before Christmas, when all thru the abode Only one creature was stirring, and she was cleaning the commode. The children were finally sleeping, all snug in their beds, while visions of Nintendo and Barbie, flipped through their heads. The dad was snoring in front of the TV, with a half-constructed bicycle propped on his knee. So only the mom heard the reindeer hooves clatter, which made her sigh, "Now what is the matter?" With toilet bowl brush still clutched in her hand, She descended the stairs, and saw the old man. He was covered with ashes and soot, which fell with a shrug, "Oh great," muttered the mom, "Now I have to clean the rug." "Ho Ho Ho!" cried Santa, "I'm glad you're awake." "your gift was especially difficult to make." "Thanks, Santa, but all I want is some time alone." "Exactly!" he chuckled, "So, I've made you a clone." "A clone?" she muttered, "What good is that?" "Run along, Santa, I've no time for chit chat." Then out walked the clone - The mother's twin, Same hair, same eyes, same double chin. "She'll cook, she'll dust, she'll mop every mess. You'll relax, take it easy, watch The Young and The Restless." "Fantastic!" the mom cheered. "My dream has come true!" "I'll shop, I'll read, I'll sleep a night through!" >From the room above, the youngest did fret. "Mommy! Come quickly, I'm scared and I'm wet." The clone replied, "I'm coming, sweetheart." "Hey," the mom smiled, "She sure knows her part." The clone changed the small one and hummed her tune, as she bundled the child in a blanket cocoon. "You're the best mommy ever. I really love you." The clone smiled and sighed, "And I love you, too." The mom frowned and said, "Sorry, Santa, no deal." That's my child's LOVE she is trying to steal." Smiling wisely Santa said, "To me it is clear, Only one loving mother is needed here." The mom kissed her child and tucked her in bed. "Thank You, Santa, for clearing my head. I sometimes forget, it won't be very long, when they'll be too old for my cradle and song." The clock on the mantle began to chime. Santa whispered to the clone, "It works every time." With the clone by his side Santa said "Goodnight. Merry Christmas, dear Mom, You will be all right." ~Author Unknown~ Disclaimer : This message may contain confidential, proprietary or legally privileged information. [Goanet]RIBANDAR MOLESTATION CASE: CHILDREN'S COURT ADJOURNS MATTER TO 7th JANUARY
The Goa Children's Court headed by South Goa District Judge A.D.Salkar today announced that it would deliver on 7th January its order on the maintainability of the criminal complaint filed by Mr. Anthony Frois uncle of the minor girl allegedly molested by Ribandar Parish Priest Fr. Newton Rodrigues. The Court today heard further arguments advanced on behalf of the Complainant Mr. Frois. The Court was told that the offence allegedly committed by the priest was very serious and that though it was a year today the priest was yet to face the due process of law. The complaint, which is the first of its kind before the recently constituted Childrens court, has been filed by Mr. Frois against the Parish Priest in view of the police dragging its feet in filing the charge sheet against the accused priest. On Dec 24th last year before the Xmas midnight mass Fr. Newton Rodrigues allegedly took the 13-year-old Ribandar girl to a room in the church on the pretext of taking confession and molested her. Fr. Newton Rodrigues is the first Roman Catholic Priest in Goa against whom the police have registered an F.I.R for an offence of molestation. When the matter came up for hearing today strong exception was taken that the case was not listed on the board and the Courts attention was drawn to the fact that a officer of the court who happens to be a catholic had directed the clerk not to list the case on the board to apparently avoid embarrassment to the accused priest. Taking prompt cognizance of this complaint Judge A.D Salkar directed that the private criminal complaint against the accused priest be registered and that it should appear on the board whenever fixed for hearing. Meanwhile a contempt of Court petition filed against Inspector Mrs. Ezilda D' Souza for not complying with her statement is already pending before the Panaji Bench of the Bombay High Court. ___ ALL-NEW Yahoo! All people are innocent until proven guilty in a court of Law. What you are doing appears to me is create a "lynching mob" of people to accuse a person, who may or may not be guilty. Re: [Goanet]Some "FFs" need bangles!
Hey Miguel, Excuse me. While I don't disagree with the thread of your views that freedom fighters worth their name should be able to stand up for and stand by what they are supposed to have stood for, I don't see how they would be "better off wearing green and red bangles"? What really are you saying Miguel? albertina > Date: Thu, 23 Dec 2004 09:23:39 +0530 > From: Miguel Braganza <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: "GT-Ed." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Cc: Goanet > Subject: [Goanet]Some "FFs" need bangles! > Reply-To: goanet@goanet.org > > To, > The Editor, > Gomantak Times, > Panaji > > Sub: "Nothing objectionable, only factual" says Nagesh Karmali. Mario, There used to be a time when I wondered whether I should point out to you that you are the ONLY member on this forum that uses crude language. Now I debate on whether your replies here are serious or are only worth reading their "entertainment value." > The US unemployment rate is 5.4%, whereas it is > almost 7.5% in Canada and 10% > in the major European countries (France, Germany, > Spain & Italy), so put away that feni bottle, > Mervyn. When you give a multi-national a tax break for sending jobs abroad, guess what they are going to do? I also hope that the "insourcing" jobs that you refer to, are not the type that all the training required is to say, "Would you like fries with that?" > Mario replies: > It always amuses me when someone from a less > developed country that we support and protect > pities us. > Mario replies: > Our taxes pay for your ability to talk nonsense > about us. It would have been OK *if* we were shown the higher prices at the very start, which is when we would have made up our minds whether to eat there or not. And it wasn't a "Rs 20.00 a rice plate" place either - a bit more upmarket than that. That's my point! You got over-charged (read cheated). I get overcharged whenever they come to know I'm a non-local. It has nothing to do with the fact that low budget tourists don't pay luxury taxes -- which Miguel pointed out. === Fred: With all due respect, this is not the point. The two tier system that was being discussed was the official system where non-resident Indians are charged more than local - not "cheating" by some. I was horrified when my wife and I visited the Taj Mahal two years back. Local residents had to pay Rs. 20/- and foreigners had to pay Rs. 750/-. This was an official charge posted on the wall - not just an official trying to fleece us. I notice now that this has been changed since. I can understand a small surcharge as is being done now to pay for upkeep, etc. - but I would have preferred if it was a voluntary contribution. Other places where this two-tier system is practiced: Hotels Rail fares Air Fares etc. Tim de Mello [EMAIL PROTECTED] CANADA
