[Goanet] Goa Revolution Day /Melinda Coutinho Powell
Hi All, I attended a very interesting meeting hosted by the Cuncolim Civic and Consumer forum, yest June 18th ,Goa Revolution day. After their regular monthly meeting, they had a guest speaker Mr Prajal Sakhardande(Dhempe college History Prof,Goa Heritage Action group) who spoke on After Liberation, are we truly free?.Mr Prajal gave us a background of the freedom struggle, the significance of 18th June, and the fight for lost civil liberties. He threw open questions to the audience on issues of governance, corruption and it was a very interesting interactive session. The fight for liberties must continue today, and each one is responsible for playing their part.We speak and no one listens.Only after repeated protests, there is an impact.More people need to join in the struggle More people need to be aware of what is actually happening in Goa and do something about it.The recent protest at the Zuari bridge where the commuters took to the streets and blocked the bridge ,brought about swift action from the Govt.. Those living abroad and care about Goa (I know many on this forum who do) need to write letters to the editors of different newspapers and shame the Government into doing something constructive. Those living here need to come out of their cosy cocoons and be involved in bringing about change.I also know many on this forum who are doing a lot(political parties, social organisations)of good work ,but my appeal is to the average person who so far has done nothing.Let this be a beginning.Get involved in local issues, your Village Panchayats.,etcAttend Gram Sabha meetings. .Be aware of legislations that are being passed ,dont get fooled by politicians promises - examine, assess, deliberate ,have an opinion. If we want to bring about change, instead of lamenting we need to get involved with issues. Will write to each and await the response. ___ Hi Lawrence, I dont know of any outlet that sells milk at mrp rates. Even if one consumer complains to the Legal Metrology dept - Mr Naik at 9422444948, the dept can take action and raid the shop. The complaint has to be specific, only then the dept can act on the complaint. A few raids on shops have been conducted and shopkeepers have been fined heavily. The campaign against Goa Dairy just begun last month and it is ongoing. It takes a sustained campaign to achieve results. Just for yr info, It took GOACAN years of sustained activity and action in the LPG campaign, and today we get home delivery of gas cylinders, instead of waiting on the streets for the lpg trucks.LPG safety camps are being organised, mechanical checks are being conducted and consumer forums are organising these programmes in different villages in North and South Goa. -- Domnic Fernandes continues (Part II) his reminiscence of Mapusa of the 1950s http://www.goanet.org/index.php?name=Newsamp;file=articleamp;sid=426 -- Hi all, It has been interesting to read different view points on Goa's appalling road sense Ive been living in Goa for seven years, and when I first began to drive here(after driving in Bombay)I was horrified. Not a single rule is followed. Most people merely know to handle and manoeuvre their vehicles, rules of the road are unheard of.To survive here, one has to be a proactive driver. One has to be highly alert for violations of every known driving rule possible. The talking friend syndrome(2 bikers stop to chat in the middle of moving traffic),the nod of the head(meaning you go first),cattle on the streets, overtaking from the left, roundabout chaos, all this and more are a part of driving in Goa.Highways where speeding cars come hurtling at you from the opposite side of the road are scary. But one has to cope.It helps to be mobile.Retaining one's sanity while driving here is difficult..My kids have picked up the stream of invectives I hurl on bad drivers. What saddens me is the number of two wheeler accidents taking place daily, and inevitably it is the youngsters who are dying. I wish traffic education is introduced in schools and colleges itself. The exhibition culminated with a Public Meeting.Everyone who had assembled joined in for a Solidarity March around the garden. Many people carried placards ,highlighting the urgent need for solutions ,to tackle the everincreasing menace of garbage. The meeting began with 9 year old Elizabeth Powell, expressively emoting a poem titled Dont Litter. This was followed by an excited group of children from different schools singing the nursery rhymeBits of paper, lying on the ground with two more verses added about segregating, recycling, reducing,re using concepts. They were proud to be brand ambassadors for a theme Keep Goa Clean. Alisha Faleiro presented a thought provoking elocution piece on The garbage problem in Goa Shalaka Bhembre presented a hilarious one minute monolgue in konkani ,which drew a thunderous applause. Students of Perpectual High School presented a konkani song on the environment. Principals, directors ,teachers of Educational Institutes came forth and shared initiatives about what their respective schools were doing and what they planned to do, to positively contribute to the Waste Management campaign. Sr Annie of Presentation Convent spoke about how different drawing competions were held on the theme of Waste Management.Students were encouraged to develop good habits, and maintain a clean environment.. Mrs Therese Almeida,an environmentalist and the director of Manovikas motivated people and shared how students are taught right from pre primary to act responsibly and not throw litter around. The school was already following garbage segregation practices, and many initiatives were being planned . Teachers from Fatima Convent,a Cuncolim school ,shared about eco clubs and different activities that their schools were involved in. Dear Friends of Goa, The lack of waste management infrastructure for both hazardous and ordinary waste in Goa is shocking, shameful and, quite simply, inexcusable. Successive Goa governments have yet to take the problem seriously, and it is now reaching crisis proportions even as the tourism department continues to lure unsuspecting tourists for the upcoming season, and the government proceeds with plans to host IFFI, which will only compound the problem. Goa can no longer sustain this assault. Ever since the wall at a dump in the village of Curca collapsed last month, spewing filth into the village, villagers all over Goa have twigged onto the fact that the municipal garbage being indiscriminately dumped on plateaus, near water sources, and near residential areas is bad for them, and refuse to allow the cities of Panjim, Mapusa, Margao and Vasco to continue with this irresponsible practice. Meanwhile, garbage continues to accumulate all over the state, secretly dumped into ravines and along highways in the dead of night. Much of it is hazarous. There is no logical reason for the situation in which we find ourselves, particularly given the low density population of Goa. It is a situation is extremely dangerous to the health of the entire population as well as to visitors. If it continues, Goa will find itself in the position of Surat some years ago. Surat, if you recall, was so dirty that in 1994 it was struck with a Plague epidemic-a disease from the Dark Ages. The vector is usually rat fleas, and as we all know, where there is garbage, there are rats. _ HI all, It is really good to see writers/celebrities campaigning tirelessly and being vocal about the serious garbage situation in Goa.Goa is a small state,it can easily concentrate on finding a solution for garbage anagement - instead the Government is concentrating on a second airport, a monorail and other airy fairy projects. Why cant the Govt realise the seriousness of the garbage problem? When there are epidemics, plague and a host of infectious diseases, there will not be anyone left to travel on the monorail or use that first or second airport. I live in South Goa,and right in the vicinity of my children's school is the Sonsoddo garbage dump. The clueless Margao Muncipal Council plan to take up the project after the contract with the Goa Foundation , for treating waste, gets over in November.Untreated this dump is really like a time bomb waiting to explode.I shudder to think of the fate of the school students and residents in the surrounding areas. I dont know what it would take to put pressure on our thick skinnned Government but they need to be attacked from all quarters. The problem is very serious. Melinda Coutinho Powell, Davorlim,South Goa

Ive spent a lot of time in the UK,Canada,USA and Australia and I loved these countries for what they have to offer.Ive really enjoyed holidays abroad and I have great memories of wonderful times. Cecil Pinto wrote: I would like though to examine the concept of telling 'white lies' to children. I have occasionally had to take recourse to such white lies and feel guilty about not having a better solution. The best example is Santa Claus _ Many of us parents,Im sure ,are guilty of telling our kids the occasional white lie.Santa Claus is a good example- the problem is where do we draw the line? One very important thing that we must remember is that kids are excellent imitators .We are their role models.Kids are not concerned with ethics but their fragile little minds imbibe whatever they hear and see.Hence we ,as parents ,need to be careful about what we say to them. Parenthood is awesome and challenging. We along with our kids, learn new things, every step of the way. Happy parenting, Cheers, Melinda

Cecil Pinto wrote Of course simple white lies are acceptable. Like substituting Mamma's stomach for the more incomprehensible 'uterus'. But when he asks how he got there in the first place it becomes a bit tricky. My wife, Beatrice, quite simply closes the matter by saying, God put you there. But I have difficulty in stating something that I am not so sure of myself. __ Cecil, parents in today's world do have a tough job handling questions from children.Media magazines,TV ,commercials, movies do expose kids to a lot of facts, at an early age. Our job as parents is to inculcate in our kids good values which will stand them in good stead, all the days of their lives. Where do we get a standard of good values from?Good is a subjective word, what is good and acceptable for one individual might not be acceptable to another.eg white lies are acceptable to you, they arent to me. I attended a course on Children's sexuality at Hospicio in Margao, and we were advised to be open and truthful with our kids and use questions from children as opportunities to address issues on sexuality.I could share my notes with you,if you are interested. I am a committed Christian by choice and I use a standard of good values from the Bible.I am not going to get into religious debate.Believing in God,believing in Jesus and the Bible gives me a source, from which to draw from and that is what I share with my children.I feel that my job as a parent is to give them a good foundation -children need guidance ,later as adults ,they are free to make choices -- believe/disbelieve,question etc. By the way,Beatrice's answer God put you there is a good answer. Hi all, I was really sad to read abt a few goanetters' bad experiences of inflight service on AirIndia.I still feel a bit loyal to the airline, since I was an airhostess for 15 years(I quit 10 yrs ago) Since I travel a lot,I do tend to compare inflight service on different airlines.Eastern airlines, like Cathay,Thai,Singapore airlines do offer good inflight service - asian warmth and hospitality ,reflects in their dealing with people. Somehow I feel that Indians expect a lot from Air India.Yes there might be an odd case where there might be discrimination, but many of these same Indians travel on foreign airlines and they accept whatever standard of service that is meted out to them. Im sure that people do have genuine grouses against Air India inflight service, but on the whole I think that Air India is an ok airline which could do with some areas of improvement. For example a Captain of ship would be insulted to be called a Shipee which put him in the same category as the uneducated deck hand - as usually was the case at that time with very few Goans being employed in the upper categories both on ships or in the Gulf. In the decades since a lot has changed. Goans hold the top posts on Ships as well as in the Gulf and the word Shippe and Gulfee have now taken on a different meaning. A very respectful one I think. __ Being the daughter of a Gulfee and the wife of a Shippee, here is my contriution to this discussion. GULFEE:My dad went to work in Muscat thirty years ago.It was a hard life, climatic conditions were tough with sandstorms in the desert. People who went to work in the Gulf were nicknamed Gulfees.Far from being a derogatory term,I think Gulfees have to be admired for their hard work. They make a great sacrifice staying away from their families, for long periods of time..Gulfee wives also have to be admired, they manage their homes, raise kids singlehandedly. I do think the term Gulfees was sometimes used in a derogatory manner ,years ago - a lot of the labour class went to work in the Gulf .All Gulfees tended to be classified as unskilled workers, unfortunately. Today, working conditions in the Gulf have improved tremendously.Family visas are granted much easier than before and people are living a very decent standard of living.Working abroad in the Gulf, they live good lives, they can afford to build houses in Goa.When gulfee goans come down to Goa,they spend lavishly-they contribute to the economy.I do not think the word Gulfee is used in a derogatory manner any more. SHIPPEE:Again this word shippie earlier referred to goan cooks and stewards who worked on ships. Many catering staff who have worked on ships have encouraged their children to study and join as deck officers, engineers. So today ,the connotation of the word shippie has changed. My husband is a Captain,he has no problem being called a Shippie.I am a Shippie Wife,I have sailed for quite a long time and I have seen life on board. It is a tough life, without a single day off. .Shippies work hard for their money. They stay away from home for long periods of time. So I do think that today the words Shippie and Gulfie , are seen in a new light and are far from derogatory. Cheers, Melinda
