Floriano's Sunday Ramblings-14 - SOS for Amchi CONCANI

And we have just finished with the Peace Day celebrations remembering the
devastations of Hiroshima by the 'Little Boy' on 6 August and the by the
'Fat Man' of Nagasaki on 9 August, 1945. And while we were remembering these
far away occurrences which took place some 61 years ago, we Goans in Goa
have been totally unaware that the Congress Party in Goa, which has been
nurtured by Goans for the past 26 years since 1980 has been quietly putting
together a deadly bomb named 'Mad Man' to be exploded over Goa with a
special capacity to cut away the mother tongue of Goans. And threatened by
the invasion by the Goan Tiatrists, demanding concessions for their
secondary tongue, the Congress Party's war room decided to explode the 'Mad
Man' right over the heads of Goans so that they could lose their tongue
altogether and go mad in the bargain.

And I could understand all this coming from the war room of the Congress
party in Goa which has been heavily infiltrated by people like Rane,
Khalap, Ravi, Shirodkar, Narvekar and others whose first love is Marathi,
the language of Maharashtra, rather than Konkani, their mother tongue
which has given them their strengths and positions in life. Once a traitor,
always a traitor is all I have to say. But I will never understand our very
own prominent tiatrist Goan in the person of Wilmix Mazarello who has the
cheek to give the following statement in the Goan Observer in the aftermath
of this devastating CLP's decision: "Romi script protagonists are not
objecting to giving equal status to Marathi. We want all Goans to live
happily as first class citizens of Goa - no Goan should be treated as a
second-class citizen of Goa" The question here is "Who is Wilmix Mazarello
to make a statement like this??"

Having been just back from Chorao, where I had attended the Peace Day
function organized by 'NEST', when I went through the Sunday papers and came
to read the above on the Goan Observer, with Wilmix's cheesy smiling mug
pasted on it, it was like a bolt of lightning that struck me. This was the
man I had called just a few days ago, as soon as I came to know the CLP's
decision on giving the official status to Marathi along with Romi Konkani,
to ask him if he had wetted his pants enough being happy with hocking Goa's
mother tongue for petty concessions at the feet of people who do not
recognize mother Goa itself, let alone its tongue. All they are interest in
is the next election. And this is the man who had allayed my fears and had
said "Let us sit down and talk this out" he being aware of my stand that
tiatrists had no business falling at the feet of the likes of Babush
Monserrate for Konkani which belongs to Goans as a whole. I had warned the
Romi brigade that the politicians will use them for their own ends. As a
reflex action, I picked up the phone and put a call through to Wilmix. And
the conversation that followed at after 3 p.m. Sunday, is something like
this:-

Flo: Hello Wilmix, Boro mhure? Floriano here.
Wil: Hello Floriano, tell me.
Flo: I have the Goan Observer with me. A lot of photographs and views about
the
Konkani issue on page 6. But yours takes the cake. Have you seen the
GO?? Here, I
shall read it for you
Wil: I have not seen the GO but someone called me to tell me that.
Flo: Well, Wilmix, I just called to tell you that you are a b*d and a
prostitute for
saying something like that, and also to tell you that I want to
punch your by
face when we meet next.
Wil: Good you called me. That is not the statement I have given to some
woman who
called me for my views. I never said something like that. I have
been totally
misquoted. I promise you that.

Flo: If that is so, which I doubt, you better tell Rajan Narayan to put a
disclaimer. The
sooner the better. Otherwise with a statement like that you are
finished.
Wil: Are you attending tomorrow's meet at Grace Church Margao?
Flo: Yes, very much. See U there.

At the Grace Church meet Monday evening, if I am given the opportunity to
say a few words, I shall vehemently denounce Wilmix's statement in the Goan
Observer to start with. Secondly, I shall state that tiatrists are not the
only stake holders of Goa and Konkani. That Goa's mother tongue belongs to
all Goans, wherever they may be. That Marathi is not Goa's mother tongue.
That it

Dom and George, Could I add a suggestion? We need to also lobby with
the postal authorities in India to launch more Goa-related stamps. I
think Goa has been very unfairly treated when it comes to appreciating
its diversity in the form of postal stamps.

As far as I recall, apart from one stamp on T B Cunha, another on the
beaches of Goa, and maybe a third on the Exposition, no stamps on Goa
have been issued on Goa in the past four decades. Someone more aware
of the field of numismatics could correct me here.

Of course, we also know from the essay 'Orientalism for Kids' from
Robert S Newman's book, that the Portuguese made a political game of
issuing stamps, and did in a way that suited their own interest. This,
however, is no excuse for not issuing stamps pertaining to a colourful
part of South Asia currently.

Maybe we should all campaign for the release of more Goa-related
stamps. Something small to be proud of.

Dom's suggestion is a good one! FN

Guys, let's discuss apostarnahistoria.blogspot.com ... preferably it's
view of Goan history, it's biases and perspectives, and related
issues.

Why do you'll guys fly off to Israel, the West Bank and other parts of
the globe at the slightest pretext? As you probably know, we humble
South Asian residents and 'desi' citizens have a lot of difficulties
in getting visas to visit different parts of the globe. (I almost got
refused a visa to Bangladesh recently! But that might have had
sometime to do with my disreputable profession.)

So let's stay in *Goa* while on GOAnet. Stay ONtopic, unless you have
a good pretext not to. Avoid abuses and name-calling, however you
dislike another Goanetter's point of view. This is what Goanet rules
requires us to do. --FN

Actually Santosh and Cornel and George and Vivek have
been falsely classifying people who live an entire
life of crime and evil as God-fearing. Then Elisabeth
comes along and blythely re-classifies all evil as a
"dysfunction" and further disqualifies all atheists

their rejection of God.

Dear Val,

Mario would never be party to such a heinous act. Were
Mario to be in any rape-room, after assuring the
perpetrator that he had a black-belt in Karate which
he lost or otherwise would have been wearing, he would
have had a lengthy discourse with the would-be rapist
on the history and immorality of rape, using as many
compound sentences and Wikipedia references as he
could muster, and effectively putting the rapist to
sleep :))

Dear GIlbert,

Do you personally know of any Goanetters, who preach
one thing and practice another? This being a cyber
forum, one would assume that what posters practice
remains unknown to other cyber posters. Perhaps you
know of someone who professes to be an agnostic or
atheist on this list but religiously goes to church
every Sunday, or writes a thesis on God. In which
case, you must out these posters. Tell us their names.
Hang a scarlet letter around their cyber necks. Or at
the very least give them a chance to defend
themselves.

[Goanet] DEVCHAR (Evil Spirit) and the VOIJINN MAIM – Part II!

DEVCHAR (Evil Spirit) and the VOIJINN MAIM – Part II!

Besides mid-wife's role, the voijinn maim also played a vital role as far as
peoples' general health was concerned; she prescribed them local medicines and
cured them.

A voijinn is the one who helped the villagers when they caught cold. She
simply handed in a mixture of bark chips from several trees like fatorfodd,
zamboll, jeel, etc., and asked mothers/grandmothers to prepare a "cuzument"
(decoction) in a "chaecho buddkulo" (tea kettle) and give it to the
child/children thrice a day; a little sugar was added for taste, and voilà,
within two or three days the cold would be gone!

If anyone was down with fever, the voijinn maim asked to collect
enough "addoxeachim panam" (leaves of a plant known as "addoso" which was
mostly found at an "addo/goddgo" [mud fence]) which had to be boiled until the
water turned reddish. The patient was then given hot bath of the water; he/she
was also made to drink a glass of the water before meals. After that, he/she
was not supposed to leave the house but sleep wrapped in a bed sheet or
blanket. The next morning, the person was up and going about as if nothing had
happened. While the hot water bath treats the body and relieves the pain, a
glass of water treats the inner system and makes the tongue palatable.

Another way to treat fever is to extract juice of "losunn" (garlic), "khavchim
panam" (betel leaves) and "alem" (ginger) by grinding these together and then
applying the juice all over the body - the result? Fever drops almost
immediately.

If a person had high fever "ani madon uloilear" (and if he was delirious), the
voijinn maim suggested "udkacheo goddieo" (wet cloth fold application) on the
forehead until fever dropped. Parents sometimes spent the whole night placing
the goddieo but it was worth it because by next morning the fever would drop
and the child/adult was able to sleep.

When we sprained our joints while playing, we rushed to voijinn maim who
meticulously examined the sprained part, found the damaged nerve, massaged it
with oil and set right a twisted ankle, knee, wrist, fingers, etc. The process
was called "xir kaddop." She also took care of minor fractures. She
ground "kombi holdichim jitim pallam" (fresh turmeric plant roots) along
with "asnnanchi sal", made a paste, applied it to the area, covered it with a
cloth and secured the fractured arm/leg with flat bamboo pieces wrapped with
cloth bandages.

If we woke up with a stiff neck, we went to the voijinn maim who again
massaged and set it right. Actually, stiff neck cases were referred to and
treated by "mottvem Jakin" (short Jakin) from Gaumvaddy who was gifted with
the power because she was born with ‘legs out first' instead of the normal
birth in which the head comes out first.

Whenever we received deep cut, we approached voijinn maim who cleaned the
wound with maddanchi fenni, went to a "kavoto" (small coconut tree),
collected "maddache suvecho ghusso" (fine powder found around the shoot of a
coconut tree), applied it to the wound - if applied in time when the wound is
fresh, it is as good as suturing; firmly holds the wound together - and then
tied it with a tir (strip of cloth). If she didn't find one around, she cut
off a tir from her "kapddacho pallov" (top end of a woman's sari). Will any
nurse do that for you today?

If a wound was infected, the voijinn maim took a piece of "kattakunvor" (Aloe
Vera) leaf and buried it in embers for a while. When it was done, she broke
open the leaf and placed it on top of the infected area while it was hot and
tied it tightly with a "tir." The aloe plant is classified as succulent. The
sap from Aloe Vera sucks the "vikar" (poison), reduces inflammation,
alleviates the pain and swelling and helps heal it quickly. The process was
repeated a couple of times or more as needed. Aloe Vera was also prescribed
for treatment of abrasions and burns or scald, blisters, insect bites,
athlete's foot, fungus, etc. Each house then had at least one vase containing
Aloe Vera plants which was kept on the "argol" (border) of a water-well.

If a person looked pale and yellowish, the voijinn maim immediately diagnosed
it as "kaikoi" (jaundice) and asked the person to stop eating poultry
products, oily food, pork and liquor. She then prepared a mixture in a bottle
which had to be taken thrice a day and here again voilà, within a week th

Hi Velho
Just a small point re your post to Gabe. In the early 1900s, the major power
was Britain, not the USA. The USA began to take over at the end of WW1 in
1918 and effectively did so at the end of WW2 in 1945. So, you had a little
problem over your chronology!

The suggestion that if the Axis powers had won the war in 1945, many would
be speaking German is a possibility and you Japanese. So would the Americans
speak German as Hitler definitely intended world domination which included
America. He was after all a "rock solid Christian." Believe this or not, he
probably would have gone in for a
coronation as king Hitler I'm sure! In London, he had ear-marked the
Selfridges building in Oxford Street or Whiteleys Store in Queensway as his
command headquarters. I am sure he had his eyes on the Whitehouse USA too.

However, even if there was German
hegemony, I do not think it would last that long (not withstanding his
vision of a thousand year Reich) and as English was already spoken in many
parts of the world (the former British Empire and in North America), I think
the international language could probably have been English rather than
German. Also note that Hitler was a racist who believed in Nordic
superiority and for this reason, non-white people would have been confined
outside Europe. Neither Gabe nor I would be living in Europe nor would you
be travelling for a Masters at King's College! Pure speculation of course
which is sometimes good fun!

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the compliment. I am not sure mine are smart posts. Quite a few
posts I read, I think of the well known saying, "A sucker is born every
minute". This may apply to the writer or the readers who respond.

I have met many well-known experts in many fields. The mark of a good expert
is one who says, "I do not know the answer to the issue ... or ... not sure of
the best was to solve this problem But this is what I think / I do I do
not know if the answer is correct."

Compare this to the current fashion on Goanet. Please answer yes or no. :=)).
And there are some who comply.

Kind Regards, GL

/The Creepy Times: By Rahul Alvares/

Dear Creepy Subscriber

On the 13th of May my neighbors phoned me – quite like the pizza
delivery boy – shouting through the receiver that I needed to come
rightaway and catch a snake from their house.
The snake turned out to be the biggest bronze back tree snake I’d ever
seen and although it was not more than a meter long, it still scared me
a little. Yeah I’ve caught snakes over three meters in length. But
there’s something uncanny about a specimen that exceeds by very much its
average size. Wouldn’t you feel anxious if you saw a mosquito the size
of your thumb?
The giant bronze back behaved very well though and so I managed catching
the snake quite easily. While I guided the snake into the bag, however,
I noticed lumps at regular intervals on its underbelly. I guessed that
it was a female about to lay eggs, so I decided to hold onto the snake a
couple of days. On the 15th of May the snake laid a clutch of fourteen
cream colored rectangular eggs.
I released the mother immediately (they do not participate in the
hatching of their eggs). The eggs I kept in a plastic cheese container
in my room. I buried them half in sand and sprayed their exposed tops
regularly with water.
By the beginning of July I’d almost given up on them hatching (bronze
back eggs usually hatch in six weeks at the most). Still the eggs looked
healthy, full, and they hadn’t been attacked by fungus. I decided to
leave them a few days more.
On the 15th of July – exactly two months later – the first baby ripped
its egg shell with its especial egg tooth and poked its head out. It
spent the entire day absorbing the surroundings with its large bulging
froggy eyes while its belly continued to absorb the last remaining part
of its yolk sac (its only food during the two months it spent in the
shell). On the 16th it was dashing around in the container, over the
peering heads of three more eggs that had begun to hatch.
I picked up the little fellow (or was it a felly?) and took him out in
the garden to photograph. While I was doing so, the little tyke bit me
thrice! I’ve rescued dozens of bronze back tree snakes from people’s
houses and never ever been bitten while doing so. Isn’t it a crying
shame I should get bitten thrice by one that was barely learning how to
open its mouth? After the photography session I dropped him in a lush
patch of our garden. He disappeared in seconds.
By the 18th only three eggs remained to hatch. They never did. The
photographs I’m including in this newsletter illustrate my wonderful
experience with eleven baby bronze backs that bit the hand that fed.

Yours creepily

The Ribandar Citizen’s Action Committee has today
demanded that the Corporation of City of Panaji should
once for all shelve the idea and dream of setting up a
garbage disposal plant at Bainguinim.

The Committee has stated that the Corporation of City
of Panaji may have had luck over the years dumping
all the stink at Curca but warned that the residents
of Ribandar and the neighbouring villages would not
allow even a gram of garbage to be dumped or processed
at Bainguinim which is in the vicinity of an upcoming
settlement zone and a heritage cum historical area of
Old Goa.

It has been further stated that even the Supreme Court
has very clearly laid down that your garbage has to be
treated within your jurisdiction and that the
Corporation of City of Panaji could not choose to
conveniently decide to set up a garbage disposal plant
at Bainguinim, which comes under the jurisdiction of
the Old Goa Panchayat.

Ridiculing CCP Corporator Mr. Surendra Furtado’s
statement suggesting Bainguinim as the site inview
that Panaji is sitting on a time-bomb, the committee
has suggested that the time-bomb should be allowed to
explode in Mr. Furtado’s own ward by setting up the
garbage treatment plant on the parade grounds at
Campal.

The Committee has appealed to Chief Minister Mr.
Pratapsingh Rane, Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Wilfred De
Sousa, Transport Minister Mr. Pandurang Madkaikar and
Town & Country Minister Atanasio Monserrate not to
succumb to undue pressure being exerted by vested
interests and to keep to their commitment that the
garbage treatment plant would not be set up at
Bainguinim.

As a US expatriate and recently enrolled reader of the Goanet news, your
publication reports tremendous development projects planned and executed in
Goa.

I am interested to know what safeguards are currently in place to preserve
the natural beauty, historic monuments, cultural milieu, etc. and to promote
balanced regulated growth and prevent environmental pollution and sociological
disruptions. Does the Goa Government have bodies like the USA's Environmental
Protection Agency with mandated rules and regulations and related
administrators with statutory enforcement powers?. Are public hearings held
on social and environment impact of development and new business( such as SEZ)
projects? I've not yet observed reports of such activities. Please let me
know whether there are other internet sources devoted to this area. .

I enjoy reading Goanet's coverage daily. It opens an engrossing and
enlightening window to keep abreast of Goa's and the rest of India's important

Dear Mr Fernandes:

Thank you for your valuable input into the sinking of the Ramdas. You have
helpfully corroborated your story with an extract from the "Times of India".
In the bargain, you've also cleared the cobwebs from my memory about the
exact date and location of this coastal plying vessel's sinking mishap. It's
also interesting to note the passengers were not predominantly Goan. You have
also dispelled a misimpression I had about the Ramdas being called the
the "Queen of the Konkan Coast" by Mumbai's proletariat. I do remember
vaguely the illfated ship went down during the early part of the monsoon
season. I understand, notwithstanding the Indian Ocean's monsoon-related
hazards facing small ships, short voyages may have been made infrequently
if storms were not imminent. I wonder whether we can get more information about
this tragedy from the ship's owners and the Bombay Port Trust.

Your thorough research is commendable. I looked up "Google" too some time ago
but did not have your alertness. Your find is definitely enlightening.

Regards

Sincerely

Arnold

To George Pinto’s Aug. 3 post (copied below), I would like to append the
combined contents of my June 3 posts:

I ask Goans worldwide to purchase three postcards. The first postcard to be
addressed to Mr. Sachin Kishore , Assistant Director General, Ministry of
Communications & IT, India -- with whom, I have been in contact with and who
is somewhat hopeful on the issuance of an Abbe Faria stamp -- urging him to
prioritize the request and consideration of an Abbe Faria stamp when India’s
Philatelic Advisory Committee next meets.

Mr. Sachin Kishore’s mailing address is:

Ministry of Communications & IT
Department of Posts
Dak Bhawan
New Delhi 111
India

The second postcard to be addressed to CTT Correios of Portugal, thanking for
the gift of a commemorative postcard in Abbe Faria's name and memory.
Furthermore, requesting CTT Correios to reconsider the issuance of a postal
stamp during Abbe's 250th Birth Anniversary year, since a colorful marquette
of the would be stamp has been created and the same test-printed on the
commemorative postcard with stunning results!

CTT's mailing address is:

CTT - Correios de Portugal, SA
Philately
Rua S. José, 20
1166-001 Lisboa
Portugal

The third postcard to be retained and subsequently -- hopefully -- affixed
with an Abbe Faria stamp issued by India, and the postcard then circulated
worldwide to ensure Abbe Faria’s legacy among Goans and non-Goans, as also to
educate them on one solitary Goan’s epic contribution to science more than 2
centuries ago.

The Abbe Faria Commemorative postcard can be purchased directly from
CTT Correios of Portugal via this link:

Dear Fred,

Since Aug 20 is almost upon us, a quick possibility for this year to
make WGD meaningful: Jose Colaco suggested a few months ago that WGD could
remember/celebrate Abbe Faria this year, his 250th anniversary.

I would urge Goan organizations to go to the website created by Dom Martin at
http://www.abbefaria.com/ and:
1. Sign the petition as it can still get the Indian authorities to commemorate
Abbe Faria with a stamp.
2. Print Abbe Faria's bio as a flyer and distribute to those in attendance or
in the newsletter.
3. Perhaps have a discussion about the man.
4. It may be too late to purchase the video from Cecil Pinto/Isabel
Santa Rita Vas, otherwise that could be shown. I am assuming the video is

Dear Friends

Having an account in nationalised bank is a problem. Every one cannot have
atm facility either due to less education or old age. In many banks one will
notice the staff take their own time even though there is a computer before
them. The whole problem is the staff do not have will to work for the
customers. Witdrawing or depositing money, updating a pass book or even F/D
take long time. Those who own lockers find that the bank charges keep on
going high and no explanation is given no intimation is send. It looks like
the nationalised banks are doing us a favour. Name any bank and the
treatment is same. Sometimes the staff have no smile on their face and it
looks like they are carrying the world's tension on them. At the cash
counter one is at the mercy of the clerk and he will give you notes the ones
he wants to give and not what you want. The zonal managers should take
rounds and meet customers at the respective banks instead of having once in
a while customer meet where many customers like me are not even aware about
it.

[Goanet] Exposure of misconceptions .. God fearing & evil

I have not been following this thread. But happened to run into "Exposure of
misconceptions ... God fearing & evil" post by Elisabeth. The post appeared
logical, but deep down does not make sense. Elisabeth is making a logical
argument on (normal) human behavior based on a pathological / abnormal /
disease process. She uses Andrea Yates as her example. Andrea Yates' fear of
God (leading her to kill her five children) was pathological, and she was under
intensive medical care for her mental condition. Complicating her management
was she could not take her medications while she was pregnant.

The sad situation was Andrea embracing strange, new thoughts and ideas from
self-proclaimed authorities. (see below). This is not uncommon in today's world
where everyone can propound a theory with little qualifications or
substantiating data. Those with a predisposed mental condition are prime
victims of such "new thinking". Contrary to Andrea thinking, most religious
people love their God.

Yet following Elisabeth's (and atheist / agnostic) argument, all human thinking
appears physiological or pathologically driven. As she puts it, "To me all
"evil" is just mental dysfunction". And as a consequence man / women have no
capacity to think of free will. Is Elisabeth saying that humans are robots
driven by pre-designed and in-built control mechanisms? And the evil is the
dysfunction of these control mechanism? Some of this may be true in that,
there are still undiscovered chemical imbalances in the brain leading to
psychosis and other neurological problems. However society and medicine have
to deal with the issues NOW as we best see them.

Her theory below on Good and Evil is strange to me. Even Mother Teresa facing
many ills of this world did not claim that "evil emanates from the devil." To
me this sound a bit like Michael Woroniecki (see below).

Elisabeth appears to do what many Americans do. They use a solitary / rare
abnormal situation(s) to make generalizations, express opinions on and make
rules and regulations for the vast majority of normal people / situations.
Defense attorneys would love to have Elisabeth as an expert witness.
Kind Regards, GL

--- Elizabeth Carvalho wrote:
Evil, as we traditionally define it, cannot exist if one is either an agnostic
or atheist. The concept of evil, is a corollary to the concept of God, hence
evil emanates from the devil and goodness from God.

Andrea Yates
Michael Woroniecki was a traveling minister from whom Rusty (Andrea's husband)
purchased their bus and whose religious views had influenced both Rusty and
Andrea. Rusty only agreed with some of Woroniecki's ideas but Andrea embraced
the extremist sermons. He preached, "the role of women is derived from the sin
of Eve and that bad mothers who are going to hell create bad children who will
go to hell." Andrea was so totally captivated by Woroniecki that Rusty and
Andrea's family grew concerned.

I was four when she had me plead with Jesus, Mary and Joseph to assist me in
my 'last agony' : read Irish nuns in Karwar, her boarding school in 1930.
This hyperactive brat was compelled to kneel through a three hour sung mass,
famished, we had to show up hungry ! I understand Nasci's baggage,
perhaps he belongs to mother's Sangolda - Assagao bigot belt, only, i dont
think any of them had access to that mirror George and i discovered in the
West. Certainly, my mother would have learnt that half the village could not
be compelled to squat on the church floor because of their origins !

We here live with the 'pain' of another kind of deliverence : our Jesus
is also Oxfam, Ban the Bomb, Debt Relief, Stop Aids, how i wish Nasci's
piety could diversify. Don't get me wrong now, mother fed every last stray
dog down the street, but her concept of 'reeth' meant she had to admonish
the kid who showed up to chop our firewood wearing slippers: she was genuinely
indignant !

Dear Mario,

Your disdain for fellow posters knows no bounds.

First off is your assertion, that evil has nothing to
do with God. Actually incorrect. The concept of evil
as a separate entity came into common ideology with
the Abrahamic religions, which separated evil from
God, thus creating "God" and the "Devil". (Former
polytheist religions encapsulated both in one God.
Hence you have Zeus who didn't think twice of raping
women and Shiva who is both the destroyer and the
regenerator.) The modern ideological concept of evil
is closely tied to religion and its tenets.

Secondly, enough with the compound sentences that
manage to obscure the meaning of every post. My
premise is simply that all that we define as evil, is
redefined when more information comes to light.

My father once told me only "immoral girls smoked
cigarettes". Growing up, I was a terrible asthmatic.
He should have told me the truth. That smoking would
kill me. Luckily, I found that out for myself. In the
world he grew up in, his version WAS the truth.

At one time homosexuality was considered "evil". Then
psychologists labeled homosexuality as a sexual
aberration. Much money and time was spent in
"cleansing" this evil from oneself. Fortunately, we
know more about homosexuality to be accepting of it
without labeling it.

Many "thought disorders" such as paranoia,
schizophrenia, bi-polar, were considered to be
manifestations of the "devil" in people, and they were
said to be possessed. Today, we rightfully treat this
dysfunction.

Other dysfunctions such as kleptomania are now treated
by therapy rather than punishment. As our knowledge
grows even pedophilia is being treated as a disease
and addressed through measures such as chemical
castration.

Sometimes, we are painfully aware of what is right and
wrong, but compulsions are so over-riding, that we
clamp down on that part of the brain which sends out
signals of caution, remorse, empathy etc. In this
respect too, there is work being down on brain
circuitry and there is evidence that some aspect of
criminal brains are different from that of more
functional human beings.

Far from absolving people of their "evil", I place the
entire onus of their dysfunction on themselves. They
are either the victims of mental dysfunction or
cultural conditioning (such as bigotry) that leads to
mental dysfunction of sorts. The original purpose of
prisons is lost on our modern societies. It was to
remove the dysfunctional person from society, hence
offering society protection from him, and secondly to
provide the person an opportunity to meditate on his
crime.

As far as I know, there's no evidence of "rape rooms". I must admit
that most of my knowledge about Iraqi affairs is acquired through the
media. There's evidence of "torture rooms", plenty of it, and they
were used against political rivals.

Saddam's sons, particularly the elder one Uday, were said to be
extremely cruel. Uday allegedly took saddistic pleasure in torturing
whoever crossed his path. But, according to eye-witnesses, he never
actively participated in the process though he apparently enjoyed
watching his preys getting roasted by his minions. He once shot a
friend to death just because the latter refused to part with his
sports car! He publically beat a woman to death for "fixing" a keep
for Saddam.

"Rape rooms" seem to be a figment of the neocons' imagination. For
them, truth is what Dubya tells them it is!

Cheers,

The banking services of the nationalised banks is very poor. Sometimes one

The essence of the communist philosophy is a denial of
the humanity of the individual, and a denial of their
personal rights, including property, free speech and
assembly, all under the cover-up of altruism. The
hostility towards religion is a corollary because
communism is incompatible with religion. The
repression was necessary to impose an ideology that is
alien to the human spirit, unless of course you
believe that people's lives should be micro-managed
and controlled by others.

because they cannot practice their diabolical

brutality and repression in their manifesto? They

The brutality and repression becomes necessary when
they try to implement their philosophy of coercively
confiscating wealth and distributing it, thereby
bringing everyone down to the least common
denominator. How hard would you work if you and your
family were not the primary beneficiaries?
Conversely, how hard would you work if the state gave
you everything? Communism kills incentive on all
sides. That's basically why it can never work.
Capitalism is just the opposite, personal incentives
all over the place.

Hi Aristo,

Looks like you missed a lively discussion by AMATEURS on Believers and
Non-Believers in God.:=)) The conclusions that I arrived are, and these may
help answer your questions: The specific answer to them are at the end of the
post. My apologies to you and other goanetters for the length of this post.
This is my last post on this thread. Though I may have started a new one.:=))

SUMMARY
1. It's difficult to rely on labels and generalizations. So Believers may not
follow their faith and what they claim they believe. And Non-believers
(atheists), deep in their heart, may believe in a set of moral codes making
them "believers" in something. And as some have publicly written, they
practice one and preach another so as "to sound intellectual." So the next
time we meet a Goenkar, unfortunately we will not take him at his label, but
investigate in advance his / her true beliefs and practices.

2. Fundamentally, atheists believe they have No Soul and there is No
After-life. On this basis, it stands to reason, they do not believe in a God
or that there is a need for a God. Unfortunately due to some love-hate link,
many atheists love to hate their former religion. It is frequent for atheists
or their pseudonyms to return to the faith as "Born Again" after their walk in
the wilderness.

3. On an individual basis, presence or absence of a belief may or may not have
any effect on behavior. There is a greater probability of practicing a code in
True Believers' society because those norms are well known, and, among other
things there is "internal policing" by members of their society. Thus an
individual believer is dissuaded from "pick and choose" one's own moral codes
and practices.

Most of your questions in your post are related to atheism and theism. For
you, this thread of religious belief has / should become a theological one.
Hence, you should address your questions to theologians. Then you and us will
have opinions from some recognized experts. Or else we are just going round in
circles, as you alluded in your post. And going round in circles is not
enriching us, as individuals or as goanet community. You may not believe it,
but I find this a sterile subject. This is my last post on "Rock Solid Moral
Codes."

My interest in the religion thread is more sociological rather than
theological, Perhaps you and others may have perspectives to these issues on
Goan Society (see below) which I would like to hear.

We are now into what I think is more important for Goan society. It is the
impact of "pick and choose" of moral codes and cultural practices on the entire
society. Some may not know what this is. It is among other things includes,
living the religion, its codes, and not engaging in divorce, pre-marital
live-in relations, extra-marital sex, abortion, etc., unless of course the
religious / moral codes permit them. These issues are not new. Western
society has traversed this path over the last forty years. So we have their
experience to guide us if we use that model / experience. These statistics are
being discussed in a parallel thread.

Impact on Goan Society:
1. If Goans CHANGE their religion or moral codes, that they and others rightly
or wrongly identify them with, can we then claim to have a cultural identity -
called Goan?
2. Does / can a religiously and culturally UNDEFINED "Goan identity" be
protected and preserved as a socio-political unit called State of Goa?
3. What makes Goa and Goans DIFFERENT from Maharastrian or Kanada? Is it just
the territory that had 450 years of Portuguese rule with no lasting impact on
its populace?
4. What is the common BOND between Goans with widely differing cultural
practices and moral values?
5. Do parents who do not practice a cultural code have a MORAL RIGHT to expect
their kids live by the same cultural code?
6. What LEGACY (cultural codes and practices) do Goans who are 50+ years old,
will leave behind to the next generation?

On a professional level, it is my experience that people who have faith accept
death and dying more easily and peacefully than those who do not have faith.
Though some believers are angry with God for their plight and impending
situation.

As it tends to happen on Goanet, you may produce papers and web links
contradicting the following. In my conversation, our social worker with hands
on experience of terminal p

CITIZENS’ INITIATIVES FOR COMMUNAL HARMONY

Final Solution

Dir: Rakesh Sharma
India 2004
149 minutes

Final Solution is a study of the politics of hate. Set in Gujarat during
the period Feb/March 2002 - July 2003, the film graphically documents
the changing face of right-wing politics in India through a study of the
2002 genocide of Moslems in Gujarat. It specifically examines political
tendencies reminiscent of the Nazi Germany of early/mid-1930s. Final
Solution is anti-hate/ violence as those who forget history are
condemned to relive it .

Part 1: Pride and Genocide deals with the carnage and its immediate
aftermath. It examines the patterns of pre-planned genocidal violence
(by right-wing Hindutva cadres), which many claim was state-supported,
if not state-sponsored. The film reconstructs through eyewitness
accounts the attack on Gulbarg and Patiya (Ahmedabad) and acts of
barbaric violence against Moslem women at Eral and Delol/Kalol
(Panchmahals) even as Chief Minister Modi traverses the state on his
Gaurav Yatra.

Part 2 : The Hate Mandate documents the poll campaign during the
Assembly elections in Gujarat in late 2002. It records in detail the
exploitation of the Godhra incident by the right-wing propaganda
machinery for electoral gains. The film studies and documents the
situation months after the elections to find shocking faultlines,
voluntary ghettoisation, segregation in schools, formal calls for
economic boycott of Moslems and continuing acts of violence.

Rakesh Sharma began his film/TV career in 1986 as an assistant director
on Shyam Benegal's Discovery of India. His broadcast industry experience
includes the set up/ launch of 3 broadcast channels in India: Channel
[V], Star Plus and Vijay TV and several production consultancy
assignments. He has now gone back to independent documentary
film-making. His last film Aftershocks: The Rough Guide to Democracy won
the Best documentary film award at Fribourg, Big MiniDV and Big Muddy
and 7 other awards (incl. the Robert Flaherty prize) at various
festivals in USA/ Europe in 2002-03. It has been screened at over 90
international filmfests. Aftershocks was also rejected by the
government-run Mumbai International film festival in 2002. Note : The
209 minute version, structured in 4 parts, is available as a 4-VCD set
and on VHS.

Final Solution was banned in India by the censor board for several
months. The ban was lifted after a sustained campaign (an online
petition, hundreds of protest screenings countrywide, multi-city
signature campaigns and dozens of letters to the Government sent by
audiences directly). Final Solution was rejected by the government-run
Mumbai International film festival and was screened at Vikalp: Films for
Freedom (http://www.freedomfilmsindia.org), organised by the Campaign
Against Censorship. Rakesh Sharma has been an active member of the

Cornel,

I honestly feel your questions below ought
to have been directed towards Mario himself.
RKN said he was in Kwt, not Iraq. It could
just be that Mario is privy to some 'insider'

as I never did Ole Xac Bernado's.) It could
even be that Mario speaks first hand ...
he might have been in one of those rooms.

Cert. 'A' Tiatr: KITEAK HO BAZAR CHOLTA ? as I see it... (with 4in1 photos)

KITEAK HO BAZAR CHOLTA ?

 - This was the second show at Panaji, first one being at Margao on 4th
Aug.2006.

 - It was to start at 7.30 pm but was started at 8.15pm (finished at 11.45pm)
due to
the late finishing of Shri Ramakant Kalap (ex-Union Minister and MGP) 60th birth
anniversary felicitation ceremony there, which started at 2.30pm.

 - Sr. Tiatrist Sabina , see pic, (wife of Late Greg) played the role of
brothel
‘bai-i’. She is still too good and her voice still the same. Excellent
performance.

 - Another Senior Tiatrist/Kantorist Shri Remie Colaco, see pic, also done very
well. Same style/voice/action. It really brings back the memory of then famous
trio
with M.Boyer-Remie Colaco-Jancit Vaz.

 - Yet another senior Kantorist Shri Marcelin de Betim, see pic, sang two songs
with
same old style and voice, although visibly seen lot of signs of aging.

 - Four brothel girls, Felcy, Ana, Buska and.?, see pics, played very good
roles but
Buska was really, to me, was a sex bomb shell.

 - Brothel ‘Dalal’ or agent Mr.Ronny, seen first time, see pic, played excellent
role.

 - Our Willy (tall and long hair) played the role of typical bollywood villain,
was
excellent too.

 - There was one knatorist Shir Neves Oliveira from Bombay, I see him for the
first
time, see pic, sang a song of Bombay serial blasts which received big public
applause. In another song, he tells ladies not to take lift from strangers or
even
from known people, use public transport instead.

 - Yet there was another young and new tiatrist/kantorist, Elvis, I see him for
the
first time, sang two songs one duo with Buska as bridal couple, see pic, and
one
solo, see pic, where he says all ministers who are 60 years and above should
retire
now.

 - Comedians like Selvy, Aurellio, Peter D costa, Fernand etc, see pic, also at
their best.

 - Ever seen the age old traditional ‘Zagor’ if not , see pic. Zagor were
existed
even early 70s, in salcette, maily from Kunnbi/ Gauddi communities. With
colourful
dressing, ‘Gumott’ etcm. This was shown live on stage. This has really brought
back
those memories.

 - Also traditional ‘Zotkaxi, Render & Kharvi’, Mini Mario-Aurelio-Peter, see
pic.

 - Although it was for adults only, there were many youngsters of age group
8-17.
Inlcluding Young Chico and Jr. Chico and other child tiatr artistes.

There were many other famous tiatrists like Anil, Tony Dias etc etc

 - There is nothing so called 'adult' material except some brothel girls in
their
mini-skirts and in typical prostitute pose (as they do for soliciting customers
etc)

 - I feel, these tiatr can be watched by all under ‘U’ certificate. There is
something to learn for both young and old.

Every one should watch this unique Tiatr

It shows you how and why some girls end up in taking prostitution as their
profession. All songs/singers received louder public aplause.

Congratulations to Mini Mario and his entire team.

Dear Fred, I am delberately restricting myself; since
I am only interested in protesting against those Hindu
practices In India, which offend others in PUBLIC
Areas, as also which are being all directly and
indirectly imposed on other non believers. I am not
concerned with what is anyone's belief and practiced
strictly in private.
Globally as you say; it may be as you say about
Christians; therefore there are movements and wars to
counter these! What is anyone doing in India, in the
Indian context of Hindutva dadagiri? I am trying to do
my bit. That's all.

In India/Goa, the freedom for religious practice,
is isolated to parts of the country; and is
effectively stymied by the majority Hindus (caste
Hindus) in large parts of the country. How about that?

  Nasci replies:
I know all about this Hindutva business! It actually
started soon after the Nehru era; but gained momentum
from as early as when Indira was PM for the first
time. If it is not religion, as you say; then why is
anyone and the Govt. allowing this to go on under the
'guise of religious freedom'?? Why is there no public
movement to ban this behavior and put the same into
'Constitutional Law'? Is that not a trampling on the
freedom of other religions?
I am only protesting against the caste prejudices and
animal worship as these inpact on other non believers
in a major way! I am only demanding from them, their
respect and tolerence of others' beliefs; as also not
to impose their beliefs on others! So then WHO IS the
BIGOT? I am not forcing my religious beliefs on
others.

FRED asserts:

NASCI:
If my ancestors were hindu, does not mean that I have
to remain primitive in thought and worship, in this
day and age!

FRED asserts:
To call Hindus animal worshippers is akin to

NASCI responds:
Vasant and Vivek and Santosh have testified and
support that Hindus 'worship' animals; and Vasant even
said that the people have been asked to refrain from
doing that. I do not care who worships what; as long
as these have no public impact on others' day to day
life.

Fred, the Hindus actually 'WORSHIP' animals and other
deities like Ganesh; that's their business! Christians
do not worship the 'Wood of the Cross' but do only
venerate that 'Wood'. They do not worship the statues
made of wood; they do venarate the persons whom the
statues represent, as also the Virgin Mary. Only The
Father in Heaven and Jesus Christ and The HOLY SPIRIT
are God and worshiped as such.

 FRED quotes:

Hindus believe in treating all living things equally

Many Hindus believe that the cow is a living symbol of

the cow, thought to have been the first animalHindus

milk, milk products, labor, and dung. Because cows
would give all its possessions for the benefit of

important parts of the family.

Hi Peter
Further to your brief comment that my view of Hitler and Stalin as
Christians was a "dose of humour" and implicitly, a source of amusement to
you, I felt the need to provide you, and others, data that may make
you realise that I was indeed making a very serious point in relation to the
Goanet debate on a "rock solid Christian moral code."

To put the two characters (Hitler and Stalin) in particular context, perhaps
I should indicate that, many years ago, I taught, Advanced Level History in
a Further Education College--the equivalent to the American Community
College. What I taught then, was Modern European History which covered 1870
to 1950. Needless to say that, colonial history, two World Wars and the
peace in between, featured strongly within this demanding programme which
determined competitive university entry for students.

As this was before the advent of the VCR, I often went into Central and
Eastern Europe, by car, to generate audio visual teaching aides. A total of
15 weeks vacation a year easily permitted this! I was immensely interested
in this area of work and therefore photographed many of the places where
Hitler and Stalin (and incidentally, Napoleon too) effectively
'staged' their careers. Throughout, I was intrigued by one significant
question---how
did the two murderous monsters (who sometimes worked colaborately but never
actually met) emerge in relatively recent historical times, to cause so much
devastation?

All this was in the 1960s, at the height of the Cold War and well before the
Berlin Wall came down. My many photographs and slides are now of
considerable historical interest in today's significantly changed Europe.

Thus, when I claimed in my recent posts that Hitler and Stalin (who trained
for the Russian Orthodox priesthood until age 20) were Christians, from
birth, I was quite serious in my claim and now want to elaborate on this
claim by focusing on Hitler specifically. After all, Goanet is a learning
instrument!

For lack of time, I will present details in numbered form below so that it
will also be easy for anyone to focus on or question one or more points made
below. My data is
obtained from wide reading and also from the Internet. I would be
particularly interested to hear your comments, hopefully, after you have
done some exploration on this theme too so that there is a genuine exchange
of ideas. I have no interest in scoring points on issues nor in putting
anybody down regarding alternative ideas in relation to the content of this
post. I will leave habitual 'put-downs' to the recognised 'experts' in such
activity on Goanet!

It amazed me to discover that, although an absolute fascist, Hitler was
definitely, more than a cafeteria Catholic. This was despite his acute
racism and intense hatred of the Jews. He also hated communism and the
Slavs whom he wanted to conquer to create living space for the Germans. He
kept his hand in Catholicism throughout his life for understandable
strategic reasons, but also, most intriguingly, because of his deep belief
and faith in Catholicism. He was bred in this faith by his intensely
Catholic mother to whom he was entirely devoted and utterly heart-broken at
her Catholic funeral.

A long time ago, I had read Hitler's rambling massive tome Mein Kampf. It
was pretty
boring and easy for one to skip pages at times. I now recall that I only
focused on Hitler's convuluted rationale and construction of Nazi ideology
and somehow missed signs of his Catholicism in it. At that time, I took it
that, Hitler was some kind of godless lunatic as most people believed. It is
only more recently that I began to read much more about this character out
of sheer curiosity and was surprised at what I discovered from the available
huge bibliography about him and from the internet. In general, I am not
terribly enamoured by the 'quick fix' internet which draws from texts
anyway. I still have a preference for scholarly texts re Hitler that have
stood the test of time such as Kedward, Bullock, Chambers and Carrie.

There are those who reject the notion that Hitler was a Catholic and are in
'understandable' denial of this fact. Indeed, what I have to say below,
pains me personally as I was, after all, brought up a Catholic. However,
Catholicism has invariably had two sides to it. One, benign, soothing and
appealing to many. The other, sadly, has been linked to pr

I disagree. One does not have to call out the name of God while committing a
crime against fellow
beings to be indicted in this manner. Actions speak, not necessarily words.
Bush has been quoted
as saying he makes decisions on bended knee. In the 2000 primary, he said
Christ was his most
important philosopher. He endorsed the Republican Party Texas platform in 2004
which refers to God
as a Christian nation. His view on stem cell research is driven by his faith (I
doubt he
understands the science).

For your statement to be true, would mean Bush excludes God from areas of his
life inspite of
being God-fearing. I doubt in his thinking he can make that leap, especially in
matters of war. In
1998 he stood on the Temple Mount and wept, his ties with Israel go back to at
least then.

So it is possible for God-fearing men to commit crimes, because of the
influence of their religion
or inspite of it. For your statement to be true, he would have to live on two
separate paths. Not
possible. This is why Santosh and others are correct in saying God-fearing
people commit evil,
just as atheists and agnostics do. One cannot say the Mafia were Catholic when
they went to church
in the morning and received communion, and in the afternoon were not Catholic
when they killed a
rival.

Hi Jim
I had worked out privately, and for myself, the very logical presentation
you so well made, re the wisdom, or not, to invest in relatively cheap,
easily maintainable, property in Goa.

I have no skills in the use of money for investment purposes but it seemed
like commonsense to me, to predict/anticipate exactly what is now happening
in Goa re foreign investment in homes etc and the value of the rupee
compared to sterling.

Thank you for echoing my gut instinct on this issue. However, there is of
course, another side to the issue in that, many Diaspora Goans may simply
want the serenity of parts of Goa and an attachment to 'their own soil'
regardless of monetary considerations.

Gilbert,

Did you read the rest of what you wrote, and notice
your double standards? Did you notice that you have
not changed the luck of Goanetters at all because you
have provided extremely selective and limited data,
even less than me? Moreover, you have claimed that
Japan is a "traditional" country as opposed to a
modern one. You have also made up your own rules, and
modified them with each post according to your
convenience. But since you imply that "traditional"
societies have lower incarceration rates than "modern"
ones, why stop at only 3 countries, namely India,
Pakistan and Sri Lanka? Why not take the mean of the
incarceration rates of all "traditional" countries and
compare it with that of all "modern" countries?

The mean incarceration rate of all 183 "traditional"
countries for which these data are available is 167.8
per 100,000 people.

The mean incarceration rate of all 25 "modern"
countries for which these data are available is 126.2
per 100,000 people.

The standard errors of the mean for the two sets of
countries are 9.5 and 25.8, respectively. These data
should settle the question of whether "traditional"
countries have a lower incarceration rate than
"modern" countries or not. Unless, of course, you want
to move the goal post further, and modify the
definitions again, or claim something else.

Now regarding the apples and oranges confusion that
you have presented with regard to divorce rates, here
is the U.S. divorce rate trend for the last 34 years
again, this time denoted as rate per 1000 people.

1972 – 4.1 divorces per 1000 people
1981 – 5.3 divorces per 1000 people
2000 – 4.1 divorces per 1000 people

Furthermore, in 1946 the divorce rate had peaked at
4.3 divorces per 1000 people. I have also noted
earlier that divorce is not considered immoral by
modern secular society, and by at least one ancient
religion, namely Islam.

I told you to refer to the 10-year Goanet and Goa-Goan
archives to find out about my views on religious
issues. If you had done that you would have noticed
that my path is that of a naturalist and a realist.
You would have also noticed that I do not claim to
have any reason to either disbelieve or believe in
innocuous spiritual beliefs, and that I practice
desirable practices and expose harmful ones.

Hi cornel,
To be short and to the point;I must assert that I
want:

1) banning of "Ban of Cow Slaughter" leglislation in
every State and Union Territory In India. There is no
such 'ban on cow slaughter' leglislation in Goa, as
far
as I know. It is presumably a State Subject.

2) I also want legislation 'banning of protests and
violence' on public places like resautrants etc,
serving any type of food, like beef and or pork etc.
There should be legal and social tolerence and
freedom.

3)No, I do not and did not support the ban on da Vinci
Code, in any form. But I also ask that the ban on
Satanic Verses and another similar one on some thing
relating to Hinduism and Hindutva, be withdrawn and
these be allowed to be read and be available
worldwide.
Take on these Muslims and Hindus and Christians who
say otherwise.

Dear Members of the GOACAN,
I am proud that you are focussing the attention of the authorities on the
crux of the problems. But it is pitiable that the authorities can not do
much on these things due to their own limitations in intentions know-how and
systems.

Then where lies the solution?

One Valmiki or One Mario or one Mascharenhas from Germany or one Goacan
CANNOT settle the issue.

What is lacking?IS THE FELT-NEED or the IMPORTANCE of Road Safety. The
importance of Road safety is felt only when the Unsafe Roads reach your door
steps! Or when your blood is attuned to Road safety from the beginning due
to concern for the fellow beings-irrespective of their creed/colour or
political background.

GOA NEEDS A HIGH POWER COMMITTEE ON ROAD SAFETY!

The High power committee should be formed by the Government with a Gazette
Notification catering to the Road Safety problems of the Entire state of Goa
and all about road safety including legal-medico problems and Trauma care.

TO DO THIS, THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD RECEIVE REPRESENTATIONS FROM PUBLIC AND
THERE SHOULD BE A LOBBY FOR THAT.

NEXT THING: NO POLITICIANS AND VESTED INERESTS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO ENTER
THIS LIFE SAVING ACTIVITIY- TAKE PERSONS WHO HAVE EXPERTISE AND WHO KNOW
ROAD SAFETY.

Road Safety cannot be preached by a person who has no knowledge of driving
and accidents and violations and some part of Road engineering.
Road safety cannot be preached from the top of the World by one who has not
lived outside the Local Roads.
Road safety is a Movement with out a destination. It is a lifelong journey!.

THE THREE PRINCIPLES OF ROAD SAFETY CALLED AS THREE 'E' S
ENFORCEMENT/ENGINEERING AND EDUCATION
are the essence of Road safety and Traffic Management.

ROAD SAFETY IS NOT ONLY FOR THE DISTRICT COLLECTOR AND THE DISTRICT
SUPERINTENDENT OF POLICE. It is for every Road user, who has to implement at
his own level without blaming the authorities. Enforcement alone cannot
solve the problem of accident spots. How many of us drive properly? Why do
you blame the Roads and why do you blame the pedestrians or why do you blame
the authorities-solely?

Maintaining good roads is a requisite for the Road safety. But providing
good roads for bad and drunken drivers will not reduce accidents and blood
shed!

ROAD SAFETY IS NOT A MATTER TO GET POLITICAL MILEAGE OR Publicity Stunt.

STAND ON THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD; REGULATE TRAFFIC YOURSELF FOR ONE-HOUR. You
will realise the woes of the SUFFERINGS OF THE TRAFFIC POLICEMEN. I have
donel it myself on the roads of CHENNAI, BANGALORE AND DELHI- over 30 years!

DISCUSS A PROBLEM ON THE VARIOUS CRITICAL POINTS AFFECTING THE ROAD SAFETY.
YOU WILL FIND THAT YOUR OWN ROAD USERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE VIOLATIONS.
WHAT THE AUTHORITIES WILL DO IN THIS?

MY CONCEPT OF ROAD SAFETY IS: BRING AWARENESS. TALK OF BLOOD SHED.
REPRESENT TO THE AUTHORITIES INCLUDING THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE AS A
CITIZEN CHARTER.

Enough of muddle created in the Traffic Circulation Plan at Panjim, by NON
ROAD USERS AND NON EXPERTS.

First they all should keep off the debates. Give opportunity to the Experts
or the so-called, till you bump on another!

MY IMMEDIATE SOLUTION TO GOACAN is a PUBLIC INTEREST LITIGATION. If YOU CAN
: goacan?
have Road Safety.

How to go about this? consult seasoned experts in law or administration.
Keep the Non-experts, vested interests and other politicians off this
agenda.

GIVE A PATIENT HEARING TO THE TRAFFIC POLICE and also the ROAD TRANSPORT
AUTHORITIES. In addition to this, Give a role to the Kadamba Transport
through a member and also the Bus Transport Operators Representatives. THEY
KNOW MUCH MORE AND MUCH BETTER.

am i clear in this small message?

This is way offtopic. I would still like to know whether allegations
of rape in Goa in 1961 are (a) largely true (b) largely false (c)
unestablishable at this point of time (d) part of the propaganda
campaign of the propaganda war of the

Really surprising that you missed the simple answer, Mervyn. It's
there in that story iteself:

"And with that, poor Herman had had enough. He turned to Mary and
said, "I don't want to hurt your feelings, Honey, but you know if it
weren't for your money, I probably wouldn't be here either!"

Just replace Mary with Saudi Arabia and you've the answer.

Don't be troubled anymore, Mervyn!

As a very close friend of Rene's, Vivian's comments should be taken with a huge
grain of salt. If
the idea what mooted in Oct 1993, then what was done about the idea? What was
done from Oct 1993
till Goa Sudharop built WGD in 2000. Or was it one of Rene's other failed ideas
prior to WGD?

Sorry Vivian you not fooling anyone with your email below. WGD would not have
happened without the
founding efforts of Goa Sudharop and I am amazed that you who were not involved
ONE BIT, should
pretend to know now. However, I agree with you. Lets give credit to everyone
who made it happen.
I have already listed them previously, including credit to Rene. Do not let
friendship blind you
to truth.

The indelible mark of caste -- has been the hallmark
of rise or fall in the Indian social ladder. It is
merit by birth and not ones worth that dictates your
social status. It was former PM Mr V P Singh who
through the battle of Mandal ensured that of the over
52 secretaries of the Government of India all of whom
were Brahmins the first Secretary a non Brahmin was
appointed in early August 1990 after the
recommendations of the Mandal commission were
accepted. This was the real Independence Day for the
Indian society.

Yet we are often fed with a hatred towards the SC --it
is the ignorance of the non Brahmin masses to be fed
by this hatred against this community. A community in
whose ears hot oil was poured or books burnt to
prohibit them from learning. This discrimination
overtly since time immemorial and now covertly post
Independence has been the dominating force of
jettisoning the rise of other castes. The recent
agitation over the reservation policy in Central
Institutions the demolition of the Babri Masjid the
vengence against the minority communities are an
expression of the frustration that the Brahmin
community cannot tolerate post Independence.

They fear that their status as incarnates of God on
Earth will be comprimised notwithstanding the fact
that this Brahmin community consists of just 3 % of
the Indian community but corner 85% of the jobs in the
public and private sector in India ---merely by virtue
of merit by birth and not by ones worth.

Therefore it is not a surprise to realise that it is
the miniscule Brahman Caste that control the Executive
the Judiciary and dictate terms in the Legislature.

It is a fact that there are four general caste streams
ordained by Manu and codified in the Manu Smriti
according to the Hindus.

The Brahmans (Bamonns)( considering themselves as
incarnates of God on Earth ) the Kshatriyas (Chardos)
the traditional warriors many of them who fought
battles and emerged victorious, the Vaishyas ( traders
)and the Shudras (Sudirs). The Scheduled (because a
schedule appended to the Constitution of India enlists
this group) Castes "Untouchables" or Mahatma Gandhi's
Children of God and the Scheduled Tribes ( native
aborigines ) our own gawda kunbi dhangar etc.

Traditionally the superior caste in each region has
sidelined the other for social supremacy.

The science involving such discreet sidelining is
termed as "Social engineering".

Therefore there are today clubs exclusively based on
caste denomination in this country, and now comes the
latest in Mumbai where the High Court has accepted
that it is not wrong for a Co-Operative Housing
Society to restrict its membership to those of a
particular caste.

Therefore when one writes Hindu Brahmans, or Bahujan
Samaj or Catholic Bamonn ( notwithstanding that the
Church ---only preaches BUT does not practice---a
casteless society remember how the priests are
transferred in various parishes -- the confrariars the
various lay groups in the Church the allotment of
feast celebration to various groups based on caste )
it should not hurt any particular section or group
that has been so branded.

Rather it is a hypocrite's attitude to talk of one's
caste in private under covers and lavish praise on him
or her in public.

Have we not heard on Saraswat Bank, Vaishya Mandal,
Daivadnya Brahmin Saunstha then why fear the caste
overtones when such references are made.

Catholics should not fear to wear the caste traditions
up their sleeves for it will only be to their benefit
to rise up in the social ladder unitedly.

The ST in Goa ought to have been given four to five
constituencies if not seven of the forty assembly
constituencies in Goa. But having been forced to
brand themselves as OBC's (other backward
communities)they have lost their rightful status as
"niz goencars" and today the SC's and non Goans have
risen up in the legislative, executive and political
ladder.

The Hindus admittedely are the most divided community
--- rather they fully wear their caste lables up their
sleeves and from here they have moved to gain social
positions in all the three arms of the Executive the
Legislature and the Judiciary.

It is only the Hindu Brahmins who purposely project
the Hindu community as one as it helps their miniscule
numbers 3% of the total population to grab all jobs
and positions in private and public sector.

The language issue must be viewed in the light of the
above.

It must b

George:

Since we have been informed that all letters emails to various groups were
drafted for Rene’s signature, it can be seen that the Rene’s acknowledgement
was well scripted as well. As the script (acknowledgement) rightly points
out —it is “TIME” dedicated that is a valuable contribution. My post is
simply saying that Rene has spent relentless hours (perhaps more than most
that now claim a stake in founding/propagating the Goa Day). This is NOT
meant to take any credit away from anyone, except to acknowledge the FACT
that Rene’s effort in this endeavor has been paramount and therefore
deserves DUE CREDIT.

In fact, credit goes to everyone in the Goan diaspora who provided support
to Rene in his effort in forming their own groups in their respective
countries and organizing/celebrating the Goa Day, —without which the event
would NOT have been a success. Therefore, in the wide world of the Goan
diaspora there is no denying that significant credit deservedly goes to Rene
Barreto.

Joe Vaz

PS: You’ve taken your share of the credit through your own recurring
publicity? So what’s the gripe?

Dear Santoshbab,

Four quick points:

1. Please allow me to correct yet another typo from me. The above from me
should actually read 'It is my belief that NO God fearing person will EVER
commit violence against another ... except in self-defence.'

2. I believe that by your comment, you may have agreed with me in that 'NO
God fearing (i.e. Peace Loving) person will EVER commit violence against
another ... except in self-defence.

3. Yes, all of us can change, or allow our fanaticism to change our
behaviour. When we change from Peace Loving to Peace-Not Loving, we cease to
be God Fearing. I'd go further and add that those among us who support Peace
Not-Loving individuals, could hardly be objectively described as God Fearing
- the pious self proclamations notwithstanding.

4. And yet, the Emperor Ashoka changed after the most horrible battle of
Kalinga. He changed for the better.

good wishes as always
