Dear Mario,

It is not the homosexual male per se that is given to
promiscuous behaviour. It is the male gender, which is
designed biologically to engage in promiscuous sexual
activity.

The heterosexual male balances his need to raise
children in a stable environment under the influence
of one partner, against his desire to be
indiscriminately promiscuous.

Neither the homosexual nor the heterosexual male can
claim moral superiority over the other. With the
possibility of being able to raise children either
through adoption, or with the aid of artificial
insemination, homosexual males are now faced with the
prospect of monotony er I mean monogamy :))

(Not to minimise those homosexual relationships that
seek monogamous unions without involving children)

[Goanet] Online Ticketing In Goa: A convenient & efficient way to travel

Dear Goanetters,

Booking your tickets online a few years ago was unheard of. Besides, you
almost always need to have a credit card to make the purchase.

AIR TRAVEL
However, while airlines were the first to offer online ticketing, it still
requires you to have a credit card. The nice think however, is that some
airlines let you even choose where you want to sit in the aircraft, after
you've bought your ticket. Tickets issued this way are simple printouts and
I've bought myself a couple of tickets this way and found it rather
inconvenient (as I don't have a credit card).

RAIL TRAVEL
While some railways such as Konkan Railway had the possibility of purchasing
tickets online, they too went the credit card only way and was generally
ignored. In 2000 or 2001, IRCTC, a railway body associated with catering &
tourism actually took the initiative to launch e-ticketing with multiple
payment options such as credit cards, debit cards and online banking funds
transfer for issuing tickets to all rail destinations in India. To purchase
a ticket, you would have to initially register (for free) and IRCTC and
sometimes your bank would charge you a small commission which would
collectively amount to Rs.50 -70 per ticket. However, given the fact that
you don't have to deal with long queues, travel to the nearest station or
pay more to a booking agent, this service has gained popularity
tremendously. i-Tickets bought are actual tickets that are couriered to your
address anywhere in India within 3 days. (For Goa its 2 days) and e-tickets
allow a printout as a ticket. I've personally vouch for this service, having
bought more than 16 tickets this way since 2002.

BUS TRAVEL
It's only recently that online bus ticketing was made possible. Redbus, a
South India based travel company that primarily operates in Bangalore is one
of the first private operators to start this service. They now offer
Bangalore-Goa bus ticketing, and the other way around is on the way. On a
lookup of their site, I was happy to note that a search for a bus revealed a
Sharma Travels Bus had a seat for me for Rs.400/- Other routes will slowly
come up too, with presently only a Goa-Pune and Goa-Mumbai option through
another private operator. All these operators also accept payments via
netbanking and debit cards which makes it convenient for those of us that
prefer debit cards to credit cards.

Perhaps its time that Goa's own Kadamba Transport Company starts issuing
ticketing or monthly passes online. The first step could start with the
opening of a website though! :-)

Have a nice day,

Clinton..

Hi Peter
Thanks for your response on China and Russia. I have been following China's
serious failure on human rights reasonably closely but am not at all
uptodate on Russia returning to communist ways. If you have anything recent
on this specific Russian issue, I'd appreciate a reference. I am aware of
the mafia role there and the oil and gas boom which supplies much of Europe
now but would need to be persuaded that there is a significant return to its
communist past re religion and state socialism that I had witnessed first
hand. A lot of Russian billionaires make a bee-line to the UK and where
money speculation is now a great earner in the place of traditional
agricultural and industrial output.

My own hunch is that Russia may either seek independent military super power
status once again to compete with China especially, but there is also a
feeling in me that, alternatively it may wish to join the EU sometime as it
has a significant concern over a shortfall in birthrate/population while
surrounded in the south and east by states with expanding populations. The
EU would welcome such a move I think primarily because of Russia's massive
natural resources. The latter thought may sound absolutely crazy for now but
I had correctly predicted the timing and demise of the Soviet Union some
time before it actually happened.
Cheers

In north America, HIV/AIDS was associated with male
homosexual behavior because it was initially almost
exclusively found in the male homosexual community. I
read somewhere that the original incidence in north
America was traced to a male homosexual Canadian
airline steward who contracted the virus in Africa and
passed it on to his friends in the community. Since
then it has also spread to heterosexuals, but the
overwhelming number of HIV/AIDS patients in north
America are still male homosexuals.

Blaming homosexual promiscuity on mainstream attitudes

frowned on heterosexual extra-marital relations as

kind of massive, indiscriminate and often anonymous

of mainstream attitudes. Also, most female
homosexuals do not engage in the level of wholesale
promiscuity and anonymous sexual activity as many of
their male counterparts.

What is new in society is the growth in committed

it is far too risky in this day and age to engage in

None of this has anything to do with the opposition to

for committed homosexual relationships.

Dear Sunil,

Attitudes will never change as long as there is a 'law' that upholds
discrimination. That is why it is so important to have section 377 removed
from the Indian Penal Code. That would be the first step to changing
attitudes just as the legal acceptance of SAME-SEX MARRIAGE in Canada is
one large step to changing the attitudes of those who, unfortunately, have
been misguided by their spiritual leaders into believing that this is
'wrong' in the eyes of their gods.

Discussing individual attitudes towards contentious issues brings the topic
out of the closet and into the glow of enlightenment. It is no longer a
'debate to be won' but providing the right information to those who wish to
learn and grow. Others, who don't wish to have it stuffed in their face,
will be content to live their bigoted lives in ignorance.

HIV/AIDS has been associated with homosexual behaviour in the west
precisely because mainstream attitudes forced it into clandestine
promiscuity. This is now changing as we discuss the issue openly. The
Anglican church was split wide open on the issue with most of the world
against the Canadian/US Communion who have accepted openly 'gay' bishops
and celebrated same-sex marriages.
http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/0701/p02s01-ussc.html
The Catholics are still way behind, with other conservative religions,
coming up with pathetic arguments like 'God created the first marriage with
Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve'.

Wendell Rodricks has jeopardized his successful and illustrious career by
'coming out' under the suspicious eye of a deeply conservative religious
community. He has put much more on the line to live his life according to
his principles and for that he should be commended by us and other
activists fighting for the same recognition. It is not for the celebrities
that this wrong has to be righted, it is for the common men or women who
have to live their lives everyday in fear of being caught out on the 'wrong
side of the fence'. It will be won when we fail to notice the orientation
of another human being.

Dear Readers,

Abolishing this section will not be of much help at ago, what we need to
abolish is our negative mentality towads this subject. Before we look down
at people who are gays or lesbians in the Goan soceity, a question should
arise in mind what if one of our/my family member happens to be in such a
situation , how am i/we are going to handle it?

The isse of are Goans Homophobe being discussed on the net has nothing to
offer ,if one reads it carefully its mere an act of strenght as to who can
win this debate , it's more like playing minds of each other and that's not
encouraging.

Homosexuality/lesbianism etc etc, subject and issues should be discussed
openly , an awareness should be created about its pros and cons, discuss it
at home , school or any place just as we discuss sex, crime, adultry,
divorce, murder, rape etc we should be able to discuss such issues with law
makers like how/ what/if/why/when and the day is not far when things will
fall in place at it's right time , but we all need to work for it now not
for pure sexual satisfaction but mere understanding the feelings of same sex
partners.

Discussing the subject of Homosexuality and related issues should be a
constructive topic to be understood seriously due to HIV/AIDS.

The article by Mr.V.M de Malar where he mentions "THAT HARD WORKING SON OF
GOA WENDELL RODRICKS" does not go well , wonder what was he trying to
convey using Wendell's name , something like Gandhji/Nehruji or someone
else. (I Have a great respect to Wendell and no offence to him whatsoever)
.There must be lots of hardworking Goans who are gays/lesbians but not
successfull like wendell and hence they cannot be termed as hardworking.

If such topics can be discussed it has to be with a sole aim of coming to a
solution for those who are longing to come out of a closet , to those where
there is a hope of meeting their partners at a particular place and enjoy
their privacy and space. Just like the opposite sex would enjoy their
physical relationship at home in the same way the same sex too would do the
same, all they need is ventilation from their closet.

I would appreciate criticism with a solution on thi

A tale of two Popes
By Mohammed A.R. Galadari

22 September 2006

While Pope John Paul is remembered with such esteem as
no other Pole ever would be, Benedict XVI is not
likely to go down in history as a popular pontiff

The world is on the boil once again. The Muslims the
world over are rightly upset over Pope Benedict’s
unreasonable assault on their faith and its noble
Prophet. But why did the revered leader of
Christendom say all those things for which he had to
immediately apologise?

I believe it was chiefly because the Pope felt lost
under the shadow of his tall and eminent predecessor.
So this was in many ways a desperate attempt to seek
world attention and gain eminence in the eyes of his
own followers.

You cannot blame Pope Benedict, if he feels so
overwhelmed by the legacy of his more famous and more
charismatic predecessor, John Paul II. See the
contrast with the previous Pope, Pope John Paul, who
had made name, fame and recognition, all in good
measure. When he spoke, the world listened. And when
he spoke, he spoke sense. That’s how and why he had
gained as much respect, especially from world powers,
including the super power, the US. They were all
conscious of the historic role he had played as
pontiff.

Pope John Paul was the man who, above all else,
inspired the epoch-making political changes in the
modern history of Europe, most notably the downfall of
communism and the disintegration of the mighty Soviet
Union, in addition to the seminal changes that East
European nations have witnessed in recent times. Pope
John Paul provided the moral inspiration for the
changes that started with the labour-led mass upheaval
in Poland, led by Lech Walesa, something that
ultimately sounded the death knell for communism. The
recognition and respect the late Pope got from around
the world, cutting across religions, was essentially
an acknowledgement of the role he played in that great
political transformation.

Pope Benedict who took over as the next head of
Vatican has had the misfortune to start off his
innings on a negative note, namely the revelations
about his Nazi past. It would appear that he has not
really recovered from this initial setback after
ascending the high office of the Vatican. He had
enough reason to fear that he would not get as much
respect as his predecessor did, be it from the laity,
religious hierarchy or the world powers.

It was inspiring to see how, Pope John Paul, despite
his ill health and advanced age, was able to establish
a rapport with his audience wherever he went. The best
evidence of it was the line-up of world leaders, drawn
from around the world, both from the left and the
right persuasions, from the West and the East, and the
South and the North, at his funeral. It is logical to
conclude that Pope Benedict XVI was not satisfied with
the attention or lack of it he got as compared to his
predecessor.

This might have led him to unleash that absurd and
unacceptable attack on Islam and its noble Prophet,
peace be upon him.

Apparently, the pontiff thought this was the quickest
and easiest way of getting global attention and
recognition from his flock as well as the powerful
Jewish-American lobby.

Unfortunately, however, Pope Benedict failed to notice
the fact that his predecessor didn’t become a hero by
criticising other religions. Rather, Pope John Paul
won hearts and minds by talking about freedom,
advocating human rights and speaking out against
social evils like slavery. Communists were at the
receiving end even as the Pope kept his speeches free
of political rhetoric. His stress was on the need for
societies to better themselves. By doing so, he proved
himself to be a man of social justice and principles.

On the other hand, what we see today is one who does
not have tolerance for others’ beliefs; and one who
goes out of his way to demean other religions.

Is extremism limited to only one religion, as this
Pope would want us to believe? Why are Washington and
George Bush faced with the increasing clout of
religious extremists from within the Christian Right,
who are as extreme in their views as the Muslim
fundamentalists are? The Pope failed to see such
things.

This is where he went wrong. And, by indulging in an
act of provocation, and raising an unpleasant
controversy, the Pope has invited allegations that he
has undermined the very aura surrounding his august
office.

While Pope John Paul is remembered wit

Of course citizens can protest anything they want.
The question is how they go about it. Typically, you
want to lead a boycott of Goan newspapers from the
safety of being a non-subscriber living in the US.

In a recent post I suggested that a more effectiuve

EU procedures delaying issuance of passports, says Portuguese MP
NT Staff Reporter

Panaji, Sept 20: The general secretary of Portuguese Communist Party (PCP)
and the member of Portuguese Parliament, Mr Jeronimo de Souza today said
that the European Union has virtually turned Europe into a fortress and this
was the main reason for the delay in issuing Portuguese passports by the
Consulate of Portugal in Goa.

The PCP will intervene in this matter and communicate to the Portuguese
government, the views of Goans in this respect, he assured, adding that "the
PCP would do all that is possible to re-start the process of issuance of
Portuguese passports".

Mr de Souza also said that the PCP, the 85-year old party always supported
Goa in the demand for its liberation from the colonial rule. "Our struggle
against fascism in Portugal was no different from that in Goa, during the
Salazar regime," he maintained.

Stating that PCP was the only opposition political party that could survive
during the dictatorial rule of Salazar, Mr de Souza said that PCP is the
party of the people. He observed that Goa is a true friend of Portugal,
adding "In Portugal there is a saying that good friendships are made under
most difficult conditions."

The PCP general secretary said that Goa set an example for other colonies of
Portugal, to struggle for one's liberation, which was followed with great
success.

Mr de Souza who was earlier felicitated by the Goa state council of the
Communist Party of India (CPI) along with the PCP politburo member, Mr
Anjelo Alves, during a special function organised at the Institute Menezes
Braganza Hall, said that the delay in issuing Portuguese passports was not
entirely due to the bureaucratic reasons.

The commissioner for NRI affairs, Mr Eduardo Faleiro who was the chief guest
on the occasion said that colonialism is a crime against humanity, and added
that the new imperialism was being developed under the United States of
America.

"What is required is total and general nuclear disarmament and removal of
all weapons of mass destruction across the world, democracy in international
relations and respect for human rights including economic and social
rights," Mr Faleiro opined, pointing out that the peace loving people of
the world should coordinate their strategies in this direction. "A luta
continua" he pointed out, meaning the struggle continues.

Mr Faleiro also said that the human rights should also include the right of
development, making an appeal to the Western countries to maintain racial
and cultural integrity.

The city mayor, Mr Tony Rodrigues, in his speech said that the Portuguese
Consulate in the state should continue issuing Portuguese passports so that
the Goan people may get better opportunities to travel to Portugal and other
parts of Europe for employment.

The general secretary of the Goa state CPI, Mr Christopher Fonseca, in his
welcome address said that the 450 years of Portuguese domination in Goa
should not restrict us from recognising that the Portuguese have left an
indelible mark on the language, culture, art, architecture, laws and even
sports in the state, as also on the local socio-economic and political
institutions, in totality. He also acknowledged that Goa has been directly
benefited from the Uniform Civil Code.

Earlier, the CPI secretary for the international department, Mr Pallav Sen
Gupta introduced. Former IAS officer, Mr Albano Couto, well-known
educationist, Prof Suresh Amonkar, freedom fighter, Mr Shridhar Tamba,
senior journalist, Flaviano Dias and veteran trade union leader, Dr Luiza
Pereira were present on the dias.

A condolence motion was also passed on the occasion paying homage to all the
known and unknown people who fought for the liberation of Goa.

When describing a place we don't want to visit, we often use the
(co-opted) phrase "It's so crowded, no one goes there anymore". That
may go from a one-liner to a reality soon, according to an analysis by
English insurance company Churchill.

By 2020, Churchill speculates that many sites near the water may be
closed due to climate change and too many visitors. Their list
includes Goa, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Amalfi and Dalmatian
Coasts. The report also suggests that climate changes from global
warming could put golfing vacations at risk.

A-ha! We knew there was a way to get Republican backing for measures
to combat global warming in the U.S., and there it is: Golf. Threaten
to take away golf, and it hits close to home.

[Goanet] PROTEST MEET ON POPE IN KUWAIT.

PROTEST MEET ON POPE IN KUWAIT.

Because of the recent speech of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI in Germany
there were protests meetings and rallies in many parts of the Islamic World.
In Palestine, angry Palestinian militants assaulted and destroyed some
Churches in Gaza and West Bank. An innocent Italian Nun who went to serve
humanity in Somalia was assassinated by a gunshot. Muslim clerics from
Qatar to Iran condemned the Pope and also asked the worshippers to hunt down
the Pope. In Turkey some fundamentalists asked to stop Pope from paying
visit to Ankara in November and also to put him on trial. Meantime Pope
Benedict XVI has already done the damage control exercise by showing his
regret over his remark that hurt the sentiments of the Muslims. His apology
should have been enough to die down the tempers but still the fury is going
on and how long it will last nobody knows. Though Gulf is fully Islamic
region yet the reaction to Pope’s remark was not as harsh as it was
elsewhere. Even in secular India the reaction of some Muslims in some parts
of India was very ferocious. In Kuwait even the Press was very tolerant and
not harsh as it was elsewhere. Moderate voices played a good role in Kuwait
without exploding the situation. From my long years of stay in Kuwait I
have noticed one thing here that Kuwait is not an extremist country and its
citizens are not extremists, they are very tolerant and because of this
tolerant tradition of Kuwait, Christians are enjoying lot of freedom in this
country.

However, inspite of moderate character of Kuwait, on Tuesday night i.e. 19th
of this month, under one Islamic block, a protest meeting was organized just
opposite to the Catholic Church in Kuwait city to show the opposition to the
remark made by the Pope in Germany. The meet started approximately at
around 10.00 p.m. The strong Kuwaiti Police force manned the area very
nicely and it went on peacefully.

To prevent any untoward incident in the absence of Bishop of Kuwait who is
away in Rome, Fr. Melwyn – the Pe. Vigar of the Church – stopped the evening
Mass in the Church and locked both the compound walls of the Church thereby
not allowing any entry to any of the faithfuls inside the Church nor in the
Church compound. This is the first time that Mass in the Church was
cancelled and Church was closed for the faithfuls. Even during the 7 month
invasion period of Kuwait Church services were not cancelled. Though the
Church compound doors were closed yet the Policemen around were very nice.
They did not disturb nor inconvenience anybody outside the Church. The flow
of passers - by in front and behind the Church was normal and unhindered.
Even my going to the meeting crossing the police force was very smooth and
unhindered. As a further precautionary measure, the Church authorities,
yesterday, the 21st, has cancelled Night Vigil. Otherwise there is
nothing harmful done in Kuwait for any Christian. All Christians are
performing their religious rites as usual and they are all safe. May God
Bless Kuwait and its rulers.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.

Kareena,
which beach are you using for your birthday bash? I called the
tourism dept. a week ago because the garbage on the beach has not been
cleaned for the last 3 months, and as a Goan, I felt ashamed to walk
on the filthy stretch from Colva to Benaulim. The Deputy Director of
Tourism, some lady named Pamela Something informed me that the beach
cleaning contract has not been awarded by the Tourism minister because
he is having *important* discussions with the Russkies in Moscow.
Therefore please do not come anywhere near the South Goa beaches.
However I will inform the Chairwoman of GTDC Fatima Something to send
a special Lifeguard dressed in Baywatch uniform to look after the
safety of you and your bollywood pals. I read in the papers today
that GTDC is now responsible for all drowning deaths in Goa. This is

DAY 3: Campus-Radio FM Career Guidance Series at PES College, Farmagudi

P R E S SR E L E A S E

The Campus-Radio FM Career Guidance Series once again saw a 'house-full' at
the PES College, Farmagudi, on 20 September 2006. Present on the occasion were
Mr V. S. Page, Station Engineer (AIR), Mr Dinghe, Principal, Gerson Rebelo of
Frankfinn and Ilidio de Noronha of Plus Publications.

Speaking on the occasion, Principal Dinghe extended a warm welcome and thanked
the organisers for making their institution a part of the Career Guidance
trail.

The career expert for the day was well-known corporate trainer and life coach
Mr Pravin Sabnis whose presentation titled "Soft skills for hard careers" left
the lively audience asking for more.

Complimenting the first talk was the next by Mr Prasad Joshi who shared his
experience in adventure and eco-tourism. Mr Joshi who is Goa's only A-grade
certified mountaineer was certainly an inspiration to the youth of the area
like Ponda which particularly lends itself to the fast growing adventure and
eco-tourism industry.

>From the mountains to the skies was where Mrs Vidya D'Silva of Frankfinn
Institute, Margao, led the responsive audience with her succinct presentation
on careers in aviation and hospitality.

The Q&A that followed saw the students fielding numerous queries which were
effectively tackled by the expert panel.

The 90-minute session which was interspersed with lively games and spot
contests, was hosted by FM Rainbow's popular RJ Bambino.

This first of its kind event is being organised by All India Radio, Panaji, in
association with Plus Publications, publishers of the forthcoming book
Careers: The Complete Guide, in select colleges around Goa from 18th September
to 3rd October 2006.

The educational institutions forming part of the Career Guidance Series
include Dempo College (Altinho, Panaji), OL of Rosary HSS (D Paula), PES

The forthcoming sessions will see FM Rainbow's popular Radio Jockeys including
like Sachin, Bambino, Savio, Richard, Leeta, Saish, Alfie, Nerita, Usha,
Shakuntala, Sphinx, Charushila, Shyam, Pratima, Elias and others interact with
the students.

The most interesting aspect of this series will be the fact that every episode
will be broadcast on FM Rainbow from 1st October 2006.

TOMORROW'S VENUE:

Dhempe College of Arts & Science and Dempo College of Commerce, Miramar; 11 am.

Career Expert for the Day: Mervyn Sequeira will speak on 'What Corporates look

I have only just seen Fred's comments on the tension between the Christian
West and Muslims worldwide. He may not use my terminology, but I
really do agree with his sentiments strongly that, collectively and even
perhaps unconsciously,
we have invented an unnecessary divide between the two groups. We have
effectively
created folk devils and moral panics and through these, both sides blame
each other.
This simply cannot take us towards mutual understanding for a
better/peaceful world.

To illustrate my point, some on Goanet may have just read from the Goan
Voice (UK), an article by Fr Raymond J. De Souza: Madness shames Muslim
World. To me, such an utter right-wing diatribe on the Muslim response to
Benedict is illustrative of sheer added madness through the writing of a
Goan
Catholic priest in Canada who seems unable to see the wood for the trees in
a seriously troubled world.

Indeed, in terms of substance in Fr Raymond's article, in some ways it is
as bad as all those Muslims keen on Sharia law in today's world, absurdities
like fatwas and literally asking for Benedict's head. I'd like to suggest
that,
Fr Raymond should do some history homework to discover that, the West
has messed up Middle East peoples (well illustrated through Edward Said's
concept of Orientalism) for the best part of two centuries in recent times.
Today's
radicalised Muslims are the chickens coming home to roost and we need to
understand this phenomena through an informed perspective because there
are just too many dangers ahead.

At heart, I passionately believe in dialogue and will never accept that this
is not possible between antagonistic groups. One may not be able to talk
face to face at times, but it is always possible to use intermediaries.
Dialogue
helps to lead us to understand the worries and concerns of different
groups and is a way forward to get out of the cycle of conflict. It is
definitely better than the pr-emptive vogue for militaristic solutions today
but I want to add that I am no pacifist. There will be times when force may
be
necessary in some circumstances but would like to add that a seriously
unfocused
blanket 'war on terror' is not the way!

In many ways, I see the tension today between the Christian West and Islam
as rather manufactured in much the same way when communism and "reds under
the bed" featured as a problem until the demise of the Soviet Union when it
basically imploded under its own contradictions. All Muslims, Hindus,
Christians or whatever have their rotten apples but are generally in
brotherhood and sisterhood across religious parameters. We need to draw this
aspect out today via the moderates across the spectrum instead of creating
wholesale enemies unnecessarily. Above all, there are serious problems in
the
Middle East that need to be addressed honestly and with sincerity by both
antagonistic sides as a prelude to a semblance of peace worldwide.

Before I am accused of appeasement, I claim that my vision is a pragmatic
one rather than
an idealistic one. I also know that my views will be anathema to some on
Goanet. However,
I am not necessarily determined to persuade people to my way of thinking. I
only seek that my
points of view be heard.

Peter,

I appreciate the following post from you. It is frank,
direct and devoid of any unnecessary put downs. I
accept your apology, and I apologize in return for all
the negative things that I have most certainly said
about you.

However, there are a couple of things that I would
quibble about in your post. They both tie into the
matter that you have claimed you resent about me.
Whether I take up a harsh adversarial position against
somebody does not depend on my disagreement with them,
as you suggest. It depends on a strong need to defend
myself against a very personal accusation or affront.
The people who receive favorable treatment from me
have not found themselves in this type of a situation.

Each of us is biased in one way or another. My bias is
not ideology or mutual agreement, but basic human
interactions. Just as an example, Frederick and I have
some strong disagreements. But I have never tried to
put him down nor said anything negative about him. The
same is true with Viviana.

In any case, I am happy that you spoke your mind, and
I hope we can now turn a new page.

Cheers,

Santosh

Hi Mervyn, Just to clarify... it doesn't take money to get to a
village in Goa. At least, not money worth talking about. With a
digital camera (and rechargeable batteries), it doesn't even take
film!

What does help vastly, of course, is to have local guide to show you
around the village. In the past, I've made a standing offer to create
any number of pics (within the time available ... this isn't an issue
usually except very occasionally) of any region in Goa. This works
specially if someone local shows me around the pace. Otherwise, as an
'outsider', there's only that much you can get infront of your own
horizon.

So, when Jaime de Melo was down in Goa some years back (where are you
now Jaime?), we 'did' Moira one sunny evening. My long-time
Galgibaga-based friend and colleague Anthony "Tony Martins" Barreto
helped me hugely when we needed to photograph coastal Canacona one
monsoon day, 3-4 years ago.

My friend and colleague Shashikant Punaji ferried me on a two-wheeler
through the length and breath of Pernem. We even took a detour via the
Maharashtra border and ate a simple lunch there. This was when he
needed pics for a site meant to be called pernem.com The site didn't
happen; but we got some very nice photos and memories!

Maybe it's simplistic to think so, but digital photography (specially
sharable photos) can make Goans aware of the need to preserve and take
to future generations the scenic legacy that nature and their
forefathers (and mothers!) have left for them. We are only trustees
here, of course. It doesn't "belong" to us!

Anyone wanting photos for your voluntary ventures out there, just let
me know. Of course, these will be put out in a sharable Creative
Commons or GFDL license. So that Goa's charm remains in the sharable,
copylefted, public domain ... and we shouldn't be privatising this. --

Mario writes:
What continues to confound me, however, is the utter lack of civic sense and
respect in India for the physical space of the general public and one's
neighbors. This manifests itself in the urinating and
defecating in public, the spitting and throwing of thrash wherever one can
get away with it and the strange transformation from sane to insane as soon
as a car door closes behind the driver.

Sunith responds:
Actually what is truly confounding is how Indians are obsessed with personal
and domestic hygiene, and once out of their house doors all sense of hygiene
is lost.

The traffic situation is completely beyond my understanding. We have the
highest accident rate in the world and everyone knows too many people die in
traffic accidents here, but no one cares. I know of at least 5 class mates
and many more family members and acquaintances who have died in vehicle
accidents (an abnormal figure anywhere else in the world), yet adherence to
traffic rules has only gotten worse. Witness the massive protests against
wearing of helmets and compulsory seat belts. Goans have proven that wearing
helmets causes hair loss, and hair loss is one of the prime causes of motor
cycle related deaths the world over! I remember when the protests against
helmets were going on, my company driver told me of an incident in his
village where a dumper truck(weighing over 10 tons) ran over a fellow
villager, and that the helmet did nothing to save his life. So obviously
helmets were useless and just another money making ploy.

Maybe it has something to do with the Indian brain and the sound of shutting
of doors! Once a door is shut(car or house) reason and intelligence
disappear.

[Goanet] HAWALDAR CRUMBLING UNDER HIS OWN WEIGHT.?

All officers may look like normal human beings. But
some of them are considered super human beings and
their case becomes like that of weight lifters who
lift weight many times more than their own body
weight.

Take the case of Daulat A. Hawaldar, Goa's Civil
service officer who is the Director of Municipal
Adminstration and the Joint Secretary to the
Government and also the Commissioner of City
Corporation of Panaji. As if that is not enough , he
is also the Member Secretary of the Goa State Urban
Development Agency. Then there is the unofficial
weight on him of his weighty Urban Development
Minister and the Minister's equally weighty PS and PA
who carry more than required calories.

But like in the case of all weight lifters, strains
are beginning to show and Daulat Hawaldar's over
burdened shoulders may be forced to shed some of the
weight as the Sonsoddo garbage plant is opening
it’smouth to swallow him although contrary to it's
claims, the company granted the tender, HYQUIP may not
be highly equipped.

[Goanet] Kator re Bhaji: Sequeira Signs Off (Brian Mendonca)

Kator re Bhaji: Sequeira Signs Off
A tribute to Isaac Sequeira of Hyderabad, 1930-2005

Brian Mendonca
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

On a rain-swept evening on July 29, this year at the
Secunderabad Sailing Club I met with Sir -- he was always
'Sir' to me -- for the last time. To the tempest of the angry
Hussain Sagar lake in the background, Sequeira was to
introduce me on behalf of the Poetry Society of Hyderabad to
read from my debut volume of poems 'Last Bus to Vasco: Poems
from Goa' (2006).

In some ways Sequeira's life was pretty poetic itself. The
youngest of five children, he lived on his own terms, did
what he most enjoyed -- made a career of it, in fact -- and
was loved and respected by one and all. Though he hailed from
Sequeiravaddo in Saligao, Goa, Sequeira was born in Abids,
Hyderabad on Jan 5, 1930. All his life he travelled widely.
"He was a true humanist, a teacher, multifaceted and rare,"
says Professor Rana Nayar, University of Panjab.

At ease in Latin which he quoted that evening, Sequeira would
often regale us in the ASRC auditorium, Hyderabad, in its
heyday in the 90's, with passing quotations from Italian,
Greek and Portuguese.

From there it was a short distance to his whipping
out his mouth organ and playing a blues tune, for
the by-now unforgettable lecture-dems on American
music. Though he had over 80 research articles to
his credit it was his book 'Popular Culture: East
and West' (1991) which best defined him in the
scope of its discussion from the Goan carnival to
  Bob Dylan.

He had the gift of making you believe in yourself. His
twinkling eyes made everything seem alright. He spurred you
on to what you could become -- to perfect yourself.

In Chandigarh for the MELUS conference at Panjab University
in March 2005, after playing for him the customary Goan
dulpods which he loved, he pointed out that my guitar recital
of a Giuliani 'Andante' needed brushing up. He was a
connoisseur of the arts and everything of taste.

Sequeira was a father-figure for so many of us.

And on the 29th evening he quipped that he had now achieved
'grandfather' status since he had taught Professor Lakshmi
Chandra, CIEFL Hyderabad, my own PhD supervisor, back in '71
at the Nizam college, Hyderabad.

"His dedication to the ASRC, his willingness to listen and to
help," are fondly remembered by Professor Chandra. "An era
ended with him. He was a person of the first magnitude, an
institution by himself," says Ms. Tanutrushna Panigrahi,
Fulbright scholar and Assistant Professor of English, Bhubaneshwar.

"Books, music and food, these were his loves -- in that
order. He used to encourage people who wanted to study and
helped them financially too," recalls Mrs Marie Sequeira,
wife of Sequeira's nephew Hector. "On Sunday mornings he was
part of the church choir; in the afternoon he would visit the
Widow's Home to spread the sunshine of his bonhomie,"
reminisces Manju Jaidka in her moving tribute on the net
[http://dearer.blogspot.com/]

And on the 29th I left the company of those partaking of the
banquet of snacks and hastened into the plush hall. I wanted
to compose myself for the reading from my poems which he had
enjoyed immensely for the "sights and sound of Goa." There in
the vast hall was Sir, a lone figure, in his light grey
safari, proud in his ideals and life long values, already
sitting on one of the chairs. Always conscious of time, Sir
was there before time near the dais. Alone-ness, however, was
no stranger to Sequeira -- he remained a bachelor.

I seized those precious moments with him and he asked me
about my work. I told him about my poetry reading in
Calangute, Goa the week before. And of the earlier reading
at Cafe Literati of "Kator re Bhaji".

He was saddened by the dwindling numbers who actually spoke
or understood Konkani these days. So full of his joie de
vivre, he once more urged me on to write more and continue
what I was doing. And after a pause he burst out in Konkani
"Kator re bhaji!" the colloquial idiomatic expression to
roughly mean "Carry on! Press ahead with what you are doing!"
(I am most grateful to Daniel F de Souza of Vasco for his
insight on the expression.)

Sequeira would mean that for all us who knew him, to realize
our dreams as he would want us to. The partial lunar eclipse
on the night he left us on September 7 must yield to a new
day imbued with the spirit of
