On 7/8/06, Frederick [FN] Noronha questioned:

<< . . .What is more important is who is a Goan -- how do we definewho a Goan
is. . . .>>

ANSWER:

A Goan is a fellow patriot who has the exemplary foresight to defect overseas
and then come down with a bout of incurable nostalgia

Cornel was pilloried by Gilbert, i step in to cool things off, next thing

It was not tabloids and, perhaps, you dont recognise him any longer, but i
remember this lament on our forum : Polish arrivals demand white school
teachers, assault non-whites, etc. This was followed by a plea, on Goanet
no less, for both state and church intervention in the form of plan of
education, to bring them in line with the thinking and ethos of ' a
muticultural British society '.
I dont intend to comment further on your plan to to educate church
officials in the West about what you consider the prevailing system of
racial prejudice amongst Goan catholics: I even wish you well. I hope my kin
in Goa finally see the light of day, and are able to see you in a more
kindly light.
They no longer sell our kitty's favourite treat, Tender Vittles, but
uncooked meat does just fine the little monster. If you do convince the
Vatican to write off that sordid bunch you left behind in Velim, then i
suppose we can ask George and Gabe and Merv and all the rest to work a
liitle harder for our sudharop: Victor RRibeiro and i did our little bit
when we met George today. The good folk in New Guinea have not known the

Dear Carmo,

Oh! Not this old crap re-cycled again, please.

Parrikar NEVER had a BJP-majority in the Assembly and NEVER could
complete even one FULL term in Office as CM. the BJP could garner only
14 seats this time [down from 17 seats last time]. So why exactly do
we need Parrikar now??

Mog asundi

From: "CARMO DCRUZ" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: [Goanet] Goa Needs highly qualified, clean. non-corrupt.
efficient Parrikar As CM Now !

Putting aside partisan politics, Goa needs the most highly educated CM the
state or nation has ever had - IITian Manohar Parrikar as CM now. There is
much talk at the center of him being called to Delhi to be the next Prime
Minister of India because of his excellent credentials, organization skills
and past performance as Goa Chief Minister. But India's gain will be Goa's
loss. We need Manohar Parrikar to provide excellent, efficient, no-nonsense
government to Goa once again at the earliest opportunity. The current
government of Digamber Kamat is a do nothing, lame duck government. It needs
to be overthrown and we need Manohar Parrikar in the CM post as soon as
possible ! see below for the announcemet when he was first elected CM.

IIT graduate is Goa chief minister

Sandesh Prabhudesai in Panjim

Bharatiya Janata Party's first chief minister in Goa, Manohar
Parrikar, is also the first Indian Institute of Technology graduate
to take over the reins of the tiny tourist state.

The BJP has reached the seat of power only after roping in eight
Congress defectors. This time, Sardinha is accusing him of
backstabbing.

Another challenge is that of completing the remaining
three-and-a-half-year term without facing a revolt, which Goa has
become accustomed to.

Whatever the name of the Saint may be, the registered name of the
Jesuit school in Margao is LOYOLA HIGH SCHOOL. Fr. William Rodrigues
sj is the Principal/HM and Fr.Cedric Fernandes sj is the
Vice-Principal. Both of them are alumni of the Jesuit school in which

I applaud Averthan for this excellent exposure of the thinning of the walls,
so to speak, of our social/moral fabric, requiring drastic remedy such as
tissue replacement surgery to strenghten the same before too long.

I readily agree to every thing, every item, that Averthan has felt fit to
mention in his write-up except for just one, i.e. 'adultery'

I suppose that adultery takes place with the mutual consent between to
persons of the opposite sex (or perhaps it is valid for the same sex?).
Therefore, how does one punish adultery in terms of a crime? It is a fact
that in olden times the adulteress used to be stoned to death. But I haven't
read anything about the male adulteror ever having been stoned to death.
Even this stonning to death of an adulteress was once stopped by none other
than Jesus Christ, so the bible says.

What I am talking here is the mutual consent or just consent. Salman Khan
would probably go scot free if the pavement dwellers gave their consent for
him to run them down. Otherwise it is a crime and nothing else. If one had
sex with the next woman he met without her consent, it would be a 'rape'
and he would go to prison.

Prostitution, on the other hand, I would think, would be the same. There is
mutual consent here and nothing can be done about it. Besides, prostitution
has been around since the beginning of the world, I think, and it will
never be stopped. In Istambul, Turkey, for instance, prostitutes are
shown-off in show-cases in a particular street. How that is done in an
Islamic country beats me. In Scandinavian countries, one never asks who
one's father is. Only the mother is recognised for all purposes. Also,
couples can live together as husband and wife without getting married and
may have children too. Besides, the state handsomely compensates for
producing more children. Higher the production, more the compensation. It is
believed that in Austria, turkish people have become millionaires by just
registering themselves in Austria and producing children. No work, no
nothing.

Not to deviate from the basic topic, I absolutely agree with Averthan in
what he says. But the only remedy for this insane world to come to its
senses is: each one of us to hit our heads against the rock, hard enough to
draw blood.

In my synopsis to the writ petition that I have filed in the Bombay High
Court at Goa against the three marauding hotels in Calangute against CRZ
violations left right and centre (which is ongoing), I have told the
honourable justices that if the laws, rules and regulations which are framed
are not implemented in earnest, then let these be disbanded altogether so
that citizens may do what they like, when they like, with no one to ask.
That the society at large should be left to decide if it wants to be on the
side of the law or not. That, only then things will come into shape out of
total chaos and lawlessness.

To my mind, it cannot be any other way.

Floriano

Dear brothers and sisters
We cannot afford to become agnostics. The presence of God is felt only when
the earth turns against you .We tend to turn our eyes to wards God when we
are helpless and we are in agony .The body has become weak and the blood
does not flow. We are thrown into the dark tunnel and we see no light.Yet
our faith that we will see light makes us to walk in the direction we
think it is right and with this faith we keep on walking in the darkness
for a long time and then suddenly we see a faint glow of light. We keep on
marching for we know the faint glow will turn into a bright focus. This
time we see brighter light and we really know that we have come to the end
of the dark tunnel and as we still keep walk ing we see someone standing
there and trying to reach his hand to hold ours and that is Jesus. Maim
hoon nam? The problem with us is that we are overruled by egoism, greed and
hatred.Criticism comes as an end product of egoism.Criticism comes when we
think we are great. Glory should be given to God alone and if God wills it
that glory will be passed on to you.Mother Theresa was the receiptant of
Nobel Prize not because she was great person but because God had made her
great.God wanted that glory should be given to her for her never ending
service to humanity. It is useless cutting down people who write on the
net.Everyone likes to be active members of the goanet. It is a public
forum. Our system governing religious places is faulty.I have already
highlighted the vacum in the system. This vacum in the catholic church does
not make anyone as true disciples of Jesus Christ who did not follow any
religion except the religion of love.

"Losers club" tried to derail Vodafone deal
Sun Jul 8, 2007 1:22AM BST

By Eric Auchard

SANTA CLARA, California (Reuters) - Vodafone's top executive said on
Saturday his hopes that India's regulatory bureaucracy has modernized
was shaken by last-minute moves to derail his company's $11 billion
(5.5 billion pounds) takeover of Hutchison Essar.

Arun Sarin, the chief executive of global wireless operator Vodafone
Group (VOD.L: Quote, Profile, Research), called for greater
transparency in India's merger approval process to defeat backroom
efforts by vested interests to manipulate India's political
bureaucracy.

"I really did not expect people -- the 'good and great' of India -- to
be calling cabinet secretaries, ministers, to say, 'You have to unwind
this deal, because we want a piece of it,'" Sarin told a conference of
Indian business and academic leaders taking place in Silicon Valley
this weekend

Dear Nalini

I thank you for informing me reg. the Contacto Goa programme. I saw it today
at 13.00

Some comments:

1. Almost as usual the programme DID not start at 13.00 but some 12 minutes
late!! but that I think it is a characteristic of the Portuguese people. :
total lack of punctuality !!
Here is story related to me by a member of the Portuguese Committe of
Historians who had gone to TOQUIO for a meet of Luso Japanese History.
Making fun of his own group he told me: "The Japanese group would arrive at
the site of the meets two minutes before time, ,,,while we arrived twenty
minutes later. In the evening we had a dinner party, After the drinks and
snacks we were invited to the banquet hall> The Portuguese group being the
guests, would rush to it on seeing all the Jap delicacies,The Japs would
come later,.,,and find the table almost empty!!"

2.The first episode had nothing much for us locals, because it depicted a
Goan restaurant like those which we have by the dozens.

3. Ditto the second: learning Portuguese with the Help of a Scrab.( if my
spelling is correct).having studied Portuguese in the Escola Primaria, I
dont think that it is the ideal method, even though one of the damzels said
that within 24 hrs she would speak and write perfect Portuguese!!]
. It appeared to me to be a "doctored' declaration of the girl ...and in
English !!

4. The third Episode, O yes, just wonderful !! the "Banda da Musica" which
we in Goa used to see in our Processions, weddings, and even...funerals. The
last one which I attended, was that of Vasco Alvares who had given written
instructions for it !! Those who knew him will recollect his always jovial
personality.
But...one of the musicians said that the "Bandas"were dead after the
Portuguese had left. !
True, but not exactly that: the Brass bands vanished from the Goa musical
panorama because other forms of music cropped up like musical groups with
which they could not compete.
And now, once a year we have the Indian Navy Brass Band giving concerts of
Indian and Western Classical Music at the Kala Akademy. IF it comes in
Nov,as generally done, I would like to sugggest to you to make an EPISODE of
the event.

One point which I did not find proper that you should interview Fr.
Eufemiano Miranda, parish Priest of Santa Ines INSIDE the Church, You had
done the same with our Vicar of Pangim, fully dressed for the Sunday
Eucarist in Portuguese at 10.30.,in the previous series.
One can film an Eucarist being celebrated, but interviews within the
Church, I find objectionable. specially when it had nothing to do about the
Church as such.

Besides, you did not give a chance to the poor Vicar to say what he wanted:
the camera focussed upon him 3-4 times, but hardly for 2 seconds, and Zoomed
to some other subject.
It is things like this, which belonged to our past folklore which I feel the
'contactos" should focus.
Once you are in contact with RTPI please request them on my behalf:
Yesterday around 20.50, I went to the TV to see the 21.00 news of NDTV. But
as some mts were left I changed to RTPI: another programme about Porto (
repeated today ) was on at the end"
"Contacto GOA: Amanhã "
But amanha at what time ?!! Unfortunatelly this is a common feature of RTPI
just like that of a announce programe starting later and NOT to the Dot of
the time fixed. like BBC, CNN. Goa 365, NTDC. Star news, etc.

Thanks once again and kind regards to you and to you partner,,,a Rego also
!!

I totally agree with Santosh.

Those who know Alfred well, or at least have heard of him from
objective quarters (among whom of the latter I do not count my
priest-uncle), will have heard of the many incidents in Alfred's
chequered life that would make interesting Goanet reading.

I would encourage people like Alfred, Eric Pinto and the scores of
others who come to mind but whom I cannot name for reasons of brevity,
to regale us from time to time with details of their many
life-adventures that would undoubtedly provide us with lighter moments
on Goanet.

There were in 1961 at the time of Goa's liberation/annexation, a bunch
of spirited lads, many from well-to-do families, for whom December
1961 was a defining moment to undertake a sea-change in their lives.
They went in semi-formal groups departing Goan shores as stowaways on
merchant ships, TAIP (Transportes Ares da India-Portuguesa) aircraft
and by other adventurous means, many landing on distant shores without
any game-plans. They went without the blessings of their parents,
ending up mostly on European shores, living hand-to-mouth as dish
washers in Paris, apprentices in German factories, seamen on ferries
plying Norwegian fjords, and even kitchen help in Swiss chalets (the
real chalets, not the American franchise chain). From then on, quite a
few emigrated to British and North American lives.

They have to a man, prospered, married well, and have lovely sons and
daughters many of whom must be having nary an inkling of the
tremendously exciting lives their paters lived. Especially when they
are told by their Dads from the comfort of a big Toronto suburban home
"OK Denise you may go to France for a holiday, but here are your
travellers cheques and here's a cellphone with which I expect you to
keep me posted daily about your well-being".

If only their children knew.

Cheers,
Roland.

Architecture : A serious look at Dar`s face

2007-07-01 09:12:55
By Lucas Lukumbo

The just premiered documentary of Dar es Salaam\'s architectural
heritage `Many words for Modern`, has sparked off criticisms from both
architects and the public at large, saying the film has focused more
on negatives of the country`s architectural outlook than its
positives. Staff Writer Lucas Lukumbo reports on the response the film
received from viewers.

`Many words for Modern`, a tantalizing documentary by Jord den
Hollander which was premiered this week, chronicles the architectural
heritage of Dar es Salaam using Anthony B. Almeida, one of the first
Tanzanians to introduce the new architecture in the country.

The documentary however drew fire from its critics, saying its has
failed to fulfill its objectives in documenting Tanzania`s pursuit for
modernity both in architecture and contemporary urban life.

A prominent architect in urban design, Bernard J. Chagula, told a
panel discussion on the film that it has vividly shown negative
aspects of the country, arguing that more time of the documentary has
been used to film slum life and the bad side of the Tanzanian
architecture.

``It is very unfortunate that half of the time in the film is spent
showing the negative side of us. Slums have featured prominently,``
Chagula who is also Estate Manager at the Dar es Salaam Institute of
Technology (DIT) told the panel.

`` This is typical of films directed by Europeans on Africa. The film
has not shown the good side of the Dar es Salaam environment,`` he
retorted.

He said the timing of the filming was also bad, ``as the film maker
has chosen the rainy days of all days to film the documentary with a
negative aim of showing how filthy the city is.`

He also said that Kariakoo market, the largest in Dar es Salaam poorly
featured in the documentary saying that the chief character, Anthony
B. Almeida, was not given enough time to explain on the glamorous
structure.

``What we observed was a good footage of the filth surrounding the
market as if there were no other good surroundings,`` he noted with
concern.

Another expert, a lecturer at the University College of Lands and
Architectural Studies (UCLAS) Kamugisha Byabato, had this to say, ``Do
not call what you have filmed in the documentary as modern.

The documentary is typical of misrepresentation of Africa\'s good image.``

There was also Professor Lussuga Kironde of UCLAS who said the film
has not addressed the issue of overcrowding of people in the Dar es
Salaam houses which he said was an issue in the construction industry.

He also said that there were no local architectural values in the
documentary which could give a view of the of national architectural
models.

The architect also wondered why the film had not shown the impact of
Almeida`s expertise on other professionals saying, ``we should be glad
to be shown how other architects have emulated Almeida\'s works.``

The expert also said the documentary lacked a footage on the effects
of rampant shortage of electricity and water in Dar es Salaam on
architecture. It did not also address the question of empty spaces in
Dar es Salaam.

``All in all the country`s cultural identity was not manifested in the
documentary,`` he said.

There were however others who said the documentary has to a great
extent managed to address many modern architectural aspects in the
country.

The President of the Architects Association of Tanzania, Subira
Mchumo, said that the film has shown that Tanzanians could also be
making their own films as many of the characters featuring in the
documentary were prominent Tanzanian architects.

They include Anthony B. Almeida, Beda Amuli, Nuru Inyangete, Joe
Horould and Daniel Mbisso.

The Vice-Chairperson of the Zanzibar International Film Festival
(ZIFF), Fatma Alloo, says the film has made it possible for Tanzanian
architects to recognize their place in the world of modern
architecture.

The Chief Executive Officer of ZIFF, Dr Martin Mhando, said the film
will be one of the films featuring in this year`s Zanzibar
International Film Festival during the Dhow Countries Festival
starting June 29.

The Director of the documentary Jord den Hollander has termed the
criticisms he has received from viewers as developmental.

He said as a foreigner he has tried his best to develop a positive
image of the modern architecture in the country with the help of
Tanzanian experts.

In a humiliation of sorts the septugenarian four time
lone women MLA of the Indian National Congress from
the Santa Cruz Assembly Constituency will now have to
reluctantly accept the office of Chairman of the State
run Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd.

Ironically this "gift" comes to the now recuperating
Ms Fernandes after her three day fast ordeal and
ahead of her seventy third birthday (26th Jul) from
the CM Digambar Kamat with an assurance that the loss
running undertaking " will receive his personal
attention " meaning that there will be an "outflow of
funds to revive the ailing sector" and no interference
from any quarters.

This also seems to be the conditional compromise on
the denial of Cabinet status agreed upon by the voters
of her constitutency.

But many argue that this is indeed a humiliation to
the lone women who emerged successful in the last
hustings from among several otherwomen of different
political parties who failed to make it.

Moreover this is a demotion of sorts, for the
rebellious women who has become an icon of women in
the State. Be it the opinion poll of 16.1.1967, the
Konkani language agitation the Town and Country
Planning ordinance the Regional Plan 2011 Ms Fernandes
demonstrated in her own inimitable style either by
presenting a memorandum to the President of India in
the august Goa legislative Assembly protesting the
draconian ordinance on TCP or by staging dharnas even
while holding the post of a Deputy Speaker to protect
the interests of Goa and Goans.

The four time MLA held Cabinet Minister status for two
terms, later a Deputy Speaker and now finally a post
of Chairman of KTCL which comes under the Minister of
Transport Mr Pandurang Madkaikar junior MLA who made
to the Cabinet rank (only owing to his defections and
his ST status0.

This is no way the INC ought to have treated Ms
Fernandes its lone women especially in the year when a
precedent of sort is being set in the worlds second
largest populated country with the certain election of
the first women President of India a Marathi speaking
advocate turned politician and now Governor of
Rajasthan Ms Pratibha Patil (she speaks only a spatter
of English and Hindi ). Even the US of America did not
have a women President not even a Vice President until
one may make it later next year.

The KTCL is the worst corporation that any MLA would
accept unless one intends to plunder it of its meagre
resources while the commuters bear the brunt. It is a
corporation where the staff and its workers draw heavy
salaries owing to the V Pay Commission. There is no
accountability. The Board of Directors had made a
record of sorts last fiscal year 2006-07 by indulging
in freebies like the much fancied "pilgrimage
package tours" at concessional rates for their
voters. There are a number of disciplinary
proceeedings against the workers of the KTCL and also
the top officials. The recent one involved the
VOLVO bus airconditioned luxury buses episode where
the costs overheads of "repairs and maintanence" got
the Government to set up an enquiry into the gross
losses. Then there is the spares and tyres racket.
Most of the buses on intrastate routes are rickety.
It is the buses that are pressed on the interstate
routes that are worthy of travel. Obviously the KTCL
would not intend to risk the damages they may have to
pay for the Inter state routes operations which is on
an interstate reciprocal basis.

But the woes of the commuters are many. Endless Q's
for the much fancied "shuttle" service at any given
time ---the Margao KTCL displays a gross mismanagement
in Traffic control. The unclean chaotic bus stands at
Margao Mapusa Ponda Panaji. Beleive it or not there is
now a Managing Director an IAS to set right the
working of the KTCL but there is no professional
available with the KTCL in the transportation sector
who could work out the logistics of an efficient
transport system.

Most of the drivers and conductors are alcoholic
"gutkha" chewing some deserve a Voluntary Retirement
or a golden handshake to spruce up the ailing KTCL.

Even at the time of filing this post there is news of
KTCL bus turning upside down injuring over 21
passengers. Earlier two "shuttle" services met the
same fate a week ago.

Ms Fernandes would now have to take up the challenge
of turning the KTCL into a profit running efficient
system. It is no mean excercise but given that Mr
Laloo Prasad Yadav a "dehati" without the knowledge of
Management sciences has turned the Indian Railways
into a profit making in

Someone recently wrote on Goanet: "There are over 12000 families and
individuals of Goan origin living in Victoria besides many other
people of Indian origin"

As you probably know, a lot of discussions on Goanet spin off into
off-the-list discussions. Cecil posted me a query, which simply copied
those two lines, and had, as its subject-line: "Is there any way to
confirm this statistic?"

Which meade me think.

My skeptical reply to Cecil, with a cc to Bosco D'Mello (also cc'ed
earlier for some reason) said, inter alia: "Ask the guy who made it.
Often these figures are boasts, and may not tally with reality. I've
heard 60,000 Goans in Lisbon (more than in Panjim), 100,000 in Mumbai
pre-1961 (when Goa's population was 600,000), 10,000 in Toronto,
10,000 in Karachi at one time, and so on."

And, if you'd forgive me for quoting myself, I went on to add: "But
then, Churchill Alemao claims tourism gives 300,000 Goans jobs (this
was in the early 1990s!), and Miguel will tell you how statistics are
manufactured in the Agriculture Department."

Bosco had his own take on the subject. (And while I'm getting some
free publicity, please let me comment that I *don't* call myself FRED
... had to use this in email addresses for technical reasons since the
mid-nineties ... and that I unsuccessfully tried to change the way
Bosco addresses me, but that's another issue.) He wrote:

"I think the figure could be higher...just like Fred's 10,000 in
Toronto. What is more important is who is a Goan -- how do we define
who a Goan is. Lets assume for a while here that there are 12000 Goan
families in Victoria. I can assure you several thousands of them are
second and third generation Goans who have assimilated into Australian
society and there must be very little of Goa left in them -- not
physically but mentally and intellectually."

He gave an example of someone he had himself run into: "At the beer
break I met the Goan guy and asked him if he was from Goa. He said
"Yes". I asked him where he was from. He said "Saligao". I said I had
a cousin married there and where was he from Saligao. He
responded.."somewhere on the hill"...I asked him when did you
go to Goa last. He responded.."Never". I said to him.."You
should go sometimes, at least before the hill disappears".and
we laughed it off."

So, to come back to the point: how many Goans do you think are settled
in different cities or parts of the globe, outside of Goa (including
in the rest of India)? May I add that for me, this is an academic
issue. I'm not that chauvinistic about number, and
'strength-in-numbers' or 'we-are-getting-subsumed' theories. I'm also
fairly flexible on definining who a "Goan" is.

Now, please don't turn around and tell me I'm contradicting myself --
by asking how many Goans there are globally, and by being very
flexible on the definition of "Goan" at the same time. As I said, it's
just out of curiosity that I ask. My belief is that Goa has long been,
and will probably continue to be, a melting pot, a fruit-salad or a
South Asian goulash (should we say 'khatkhatem' from the world of
Saraswat cooking?)

Your thoughts please?

Provocatively yours, FN

Hi Eric

Just a couple of things:

1. I could see no connection at all between what I had said in a very polite
reply to Jerry about his reference to "twisted minds"and your response to
it. Please can you clarify?

2. You refer to hordes from Eastern Europe in the UK. I put it to you that
you really must be reading material from the much derided UK tabloids with a
consistent record of anti-immigration rhetoric in order to sell papers to
those with a reading age of about 10. The facts are that there have been
substantial numbers coming to the UK as of right, mainly from Poland,
because of the expansion of the EU. Yet, there is a desperate shortage of
labour here. For instance, vegetables and fruit (especially strawberries)
are currently rotting because of a lack of pickers. They are not even
available from Bulgaria and Romania presumably because upward labour
mobility consequent to open access to the UK is making it difficult to get
workers at the bottom end of the labour market.

While there is plenty of work of all kinds, the poor guys from Eastern
Europe are having to struggle over accommodation. Did your tabloid reading
tell you that some have taken to sleeping in public toilets and also that
the Polish Government has had to help thousands of their fellowmen who are
desperate and depressed that their dream of plentiful money has not
materialised in the UK and are consequently being resettled back in Poland?
And yes, I have established myself here through brain power and sheer hard
work and I hope you are also achieving something likewise in New York.

3. Your reference for [enlightenment] to the bishops in New Guinea is too
opaque for me to figure out.

While I note your occasional quips on Goanet, I am sure many of us would
appreciate something at least a little coherent and substantive from you
instead of vague one-liners. Please will you try to do this now that you
have safely returned from Oyster Bay--the place I had once loved outside Dar
es salaam?

Good wishes
Cornel

PS Your subject heading of "if Cornel Does Really Care!" is also totally
lacking in being informative in any conceivable way. Can you kindly throw
some light on what you had in mind? And re "vittles", did you correctly mean
victuals?

eric pinto wrote:

Funny thing, i don't want to imagine our site without either Gilbert or

Things dont happen in a vacuum, and if Gilbert should ask around, he will
learn about the social scene of our crowd in East Africa in the early
decades of the century that just ended.

Perhaps it was a natural in a colonial set up that required a pecking order,
and we filled in the gaps eagerly, but mean is mean, and Tony Barros/Cornell
have expanded on the
subject in the past. i gather that Cornell has seen recompense over a
fruitful career in Britain. If at all, i picture deja vu all over again for
him with the arrival of hoardes of Slavs
in London.

and i imagine those nice folk are going to keep Cornell pretty uneasy in
the years ahead.
And now to the real point : Goa/Goans need the vittles [ did you mean

Dear Goane tters
I like to write Konkani tiatros. In the past when I was living in Saligao I
have staged many tiatros with the help of my village friends. In 1984 I was
able to stage at the old Kala Academy tiatr competition and get the second
prize. My play also got the first prize for script and direction.Since the
time I have changed my residence I am unable to stage any plays but that
has not stopped me from writing the plays.I feel sad that I do not have

We have to establish a pension / retirement home type of system for
our retired secular priests. We cant leave them to fend for themselves in
their old age after they have spent a lifetime serving the parishes
of Goa. Thanks Albert for exposing this situation.

I do not criticise any person but our system. While walking along the
road you see a poor beggar all dirty and looking at you for some money or
food or a lame person who cannot walk and needs help.Your son is studying in
the school. He cannot study mathematics and science and is helpless
though he is good with his hands but the world recognises him as useless
fellow. We have priests working with us. Specially the secular priest. Some of
them
are under privedged as they are posted as chaplains or vicars of churches
situated in remote areas. You visit these churches and you find the priests
all
alone and has to cook for himself, clean for himself, etc. His income is
very low. He has to do everything by himself. Take for example the church of
Badem after Assagao. It is situated right on the top of the hill and no soul
within one kilometer/. Take example of the; church at Torsem on the way to
Dodomarg. The church did not have a toilet .It was only when the; church
was
handed to the Paloti fathers and a certain priest was posted there he
constructed toilets by literally begging for alms. Many of the priest due to
old
age are sick. Most of them have diabetes. Even though they have completed
sixty five sometimes they are never retired. Some of them do not have
anything to rely on at their old age.I met an old priest .He was sick and
there
was no one to help him.He could barely walk to visit a house which supplied
him for food. He even ;had to spend the night all by himself. Lonely .His
room is dirty as he himself has to clean it and his sickness has made him
dull. For many years he had served the church and its people with
dedication

Hei,

Let me say at the outset that I do not know who the CM's are or have been in
Goa nor do I much care. What I see is what I see on the ground when I visit
goa. Well, Goa has progressed inspite of the goa administrations maybe.

My personal yard stick for measuring the achievement of any CM is simple.
Bring back our small lovely towns to the standard they were when the
Portuguese were driven out.

When I was young and impressionable I recall when I first saw my local town
of Mupuca. I remember it as a beautiful town. All the buildings were freshly
painted, the roads were clean and tidy, passageways and shops were bright
and organised. The people too made the place vibrant and friendly. The
restaurants and teashops were exciting places to relax, meet people, chat
and gossip as is a goan want. The cakes and service was memorable at C
De'souza I recall. The town was alive and sparkled. Friday market day was a
"buzz day" full of excitement and promoise each week every week. Mupuca was
a "wish you were here" place to be. In short our towns had atmosphere and
something one could be proud about.

I am not a portuguese fan but I think their administration had something to
do with it. Having bright well maintained town centres provided a window
dressing to Goa which belied a country in neglect. Panjim too was great but
I loved Mapuca more. Remember, my mental map of goa covered meerly my
father's and mother's villages, the sea and river fronts in Bardez and the
two towns Mapuca and Panjim. I was young and impressionable and I felt I
belonged to Goa.

I thought I would give my children that same experience of belonging to Goa
when I took them on a visit. They loved it at the village. They loved it in
the country side. They absolutely hated it in Mupuca.

I tried to pump up Mapuca's image telling them of how it was in its glory
days. They would have none of it. They put their feet down when any mention
was made of going into Mapuca. They said it stank annd I can confirm that it
did and still does. I lost my battle with my children because I knew deep
down that I agreed with them and they were telling me like it was as
children no older then 7 and 10. Unfortunately, they still think the towns
of goa are no better then open sewers. And polite foreigners I have no doubt
think so too. That cannot be good. The towns are an eyesore and a blot on
the landscape. It reflects the utter mindlessness of the goa administrations
over the years.

I think that any CM with a head on his shoulders would immediately realise
that a blitz on our towns would make him a Star overnight. And it does not
have to cost the administration much. The onus has to be on the property
owners to get their property up to scratch by law. There has to be some form
of town planning involved too to ensure that the whole town is under the
scope. It may even be necessary to put in a toll charge to curb the traffic.

With all the revenue pouring into goa any achievement in the country side is
diminished by the appalling state of our towns. To have allowed our towns to
degenerate into slums has been a tragedy for all and not only for goa but
for all goans home and away.

Our towns are small and tiny. Any CM who cannot get our towns back to their
former glory or better should be shooed off. You have to be blind to
recognise that our towns are in a terrible state of neglect. Our yard stick
for measuring the character of our CM should be "is he for town dwellers or
slum dwellers". Wnen our towns can be places to be proud of, then it will
want to know who we have for CM. I am sure you would too.

Hi Gilbert

If you find Goanet postings somewhat irritating, please ignore them or use
your delete button. What you shouldn't do, as you so often do, is imply that
you are somehow, the barometer of the irritation threshold or that your
posts are perfectly acceptable on the Goanet menu.

Let me also remind you of a famous author (perhaps it was Salman Rushdi) who
said that, nothing is worth writing about if it will not irritate anyone.

Hi Cornel,

Thanks for your post. From the first paragraph in your recent response (see
below), it would appear that your remarks to the Catholic Cardinal of London
(see below from your prior post) were not really true. You mean to say you
actually "fotti matha" to of all persons the Cardinal of London? Ok, he is not
the Anglican Arch-bishop of Canterbury. Do you know people have gone to the
Tower of London for confusing the Archbishop of Canterbury? Back to your
contradictory statements, this disconnect raises a lot of questions. Like your
friend across the pond, please do not come up with some lame explanations. Or
Bommaim amchem tempar munta "cockamamie excuses".:=)) Did you have this term in
Nairobi?

As to the remainder of your post, it is the same old ... same old.:=))
Additionally, you have shifted from "caste among Goans" to "Gilbert's views
". Thanks for giving much consideration to my views and for telling me
what I am saying. Yet just because you and a few others make a claim, it does
not become a statement of fact. Remember Goebels, stated (to the effect) "lie
often enough and soon, it will be accepted as truth".

Bhandare gave you a pretty good summary of the issue of caste in India and Goa.
I suggest you stick with that in your IP (International Paper). You in turn
will provide Bhandare ample material for his writings or for the RSS web site.

To what Bhandare said, I may add, for the benefit of the Goan victims, that any
discrimination (caste, religion, economic, social status, region, state of
origin, skin color, hair texture, beauty etc.) is overcome through education,
hard work and job mobility. All Indians have access to all of them. The
Catholic Church has been in the forefront of education irrespective of the
above discriminatory factors.

While caste considerations undoubtedly exists in India, Goa and in the West,
many use this excuse (victims of discrimination) in Goa, India and the Diaspora
for not working hard and progressing up the academic and economic ladder. The
next generation of "lower caste Goans" are / will be the school and college
dropouts, and again we will see national and international papers terming it
discrimination.

Kind Regards, GL

 CORNEL DACOSTA

Let me provide a brief response to you in your mistaken view that somehow
Catholic Goan caste matters afflict places like the UK. Thankfully, they barely
do if at all.

 CORNEL DACOSTA

However, I did get a chance to have a five minute conversation with the
Cardinal in a one to one situation. He expressed much praise, to me, for the
Catholic Goans in London. But I did put him right by disclosing, to his seeming
astonishment, but clear understanding, that many Catholic Goans carried caste
racism in their hearts and minds.

Demanding a thorough probe into the incident, Utt

Hei,

Is there some reason why Christianity is brought up ad-infinitum in almost
every topic in goanet-request?

Come on, it is about time we stop bringing up christianity or any religious
belief system into topics for serious discussion. No wonder we spend so much
time chasing our own tails unless of course we want to confuse the cats.

The christian faith has a chequered history. Christianity has slept with
apartheid, the final solution, murder and pillage, money laundering, doggy
popes and clergy in rome let alone goa. And these are just the servants of
God.

God himself/herself has changed a bit. He appears to be less omnipresent
and less into 1:1 communication or even mobile phones. His nature too
appears to have changed a bit from a merciless God of the old testament (
you could be forgiven for not knowing the punishment disobeying god for
simply turning your head round. A crime punishable to being turned into a
pillar of salt or salt lick.) to a forgiving God of the new testament at the
stroke of a pen. I dare say King Herrod passed away peacefully in his sleep
even after crucifying the son of god. Frankly, I really don't much care
either if he did or not.

It appears that the more incredible a yarn the more likely it is to have
takers. Religion has a wonderful way of being associated to anything however
irrelevant or accommodating anything however subverse.

What is more to the point is that as a belief system religion has nothing to
do with serious topics like Education, Science, Politics, Economics, Social
System let alone Goan Christian Goalkeeping paradigm shift. lol.

When catholics were worried about going to war to the Falklands on the
grounds that it was not "justified". Cardinal Hume promptly gave his
blessing to the war to catholics in the UK with the statement that the war
was "justifiable". :) so keeping faith with the protestant christian.

I have known the Irish catholic clergy charge Africans, the very people who
could least afford it money to receive Holy Communion. White catholics were
reserved front pews. The compliant and subservient goans went along with it
all to secure a place with God no doubt. hahaha.

The bottom line is that with christianity anything goes. Just what is
amazing is that people need any belief system. Well, in my view those who
need religion should feel free to keep it. Those who do not should give it a
wide berth. And please lets not confuse the issue of associating religion
with serious topics. We would not be goans if we were not allowed our time
honoured hypocrisies and our hypocrites. hahaha.

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat may have all the tactful
and diplomatic skills but the power supply situation
in Goa has not improved in spite of him being at the
helm of the Power Ministry for over six years.

Constant power failures and voltage fluctuations in
spite of all the so called upgrading of the
infrastructure is a matter of concern. Is one to
presume that all the transformers, feeders and cables
being installed are sub-standard?

Over the last few years I have had to wake up the ever
so obliging Digambar Kamat in the early hours of the
morning to complain about power failures. Even last
week I had to pick up the phone after midnight and
Digambar as usual was very polite.I had probably not
disturbed his sleep as he was himself having sleepless
nights cobbling the cabinet expansion.

In Digambar Kamat's bio data on the Goa Information
Department web site it states that his special
interest is ?helping needy people?. Please give us the
uninterrupted light we desperately need though we are
fully aware that politicians prefer to operate under
the cover of darkness.

Mogall Miguelbab,
Thanks for the clarification. I appreciate your
views.
But I could not agree to the view that the poor,
uneducated, kas'sachi nov-vari sari clad fisher women
of Harmal etc. say “tis ani ek” because they *cannot
differentiate between “un-tis” and “ektis”*. [By the
way, the Konkani word is “ekunn-tis” which becomes
“un-tis” in Hindi]. I am sure they say and understand
“pavunn-tin” (a quarter less than three); and not
convert it to “don ani tin chovantte” (two and three
fourths). If they can understand “pavunn-” as “pav
unnem” I don’t see how they cannot correctly interpret
“ekunn-” as “ek unnem”. But it is their *business
sense* which makes them to strive to better
communicate with their valued clientele which uses
“tis ani ek”; I am sure they don’t use this type of
terminology to communicate among themselves. I know
doctors (in Cuncolim) who have learnt Kannada in order
to be able to communicate with their patients drawn
from the Kannadiga labour class. But these doctors do
not converse in Kannada among themselves. Aren’t we
converting a necessity into a virtue? Should we not
treat these words as "colloquial" and “not suitable to
be used in FORMAL writing"?

I would agree with you that “ag-gaddi” [and also
“ag-bott” (steamer)] were brought by Bomboikars. But
I doubt they were influenced by Marathi; it is more
likely to be Gujrati and Hindusthani with which they
were more familiar. [These words are found in Gujrati
as well]. I say this because even in the early
1960’s, I did not hear Marathi being spoken in
Dhobitalao where most Goans have resided; the language
of communication in the market-place was Hindusthani
(much akin to the Hindi I had learnt at school in Goa)
and Gujrati. [This included the fisherfolk who are
Marathi-speaking Kolis.] I never felt the necessity
of learning Marathi for the entire duration of my
residence in Mumbai. It is only now (after the
arrival of the Shiv Sena on the scene) that Marathi is
heard everywhere. I learnt Gujarati before I did
Marathi because I was doing my field-work in rural
Gujarat. I learnt Marathi only later (in late
seventies), by speaking with Maharashtrian peons in my
College. But “ag” is not exactly alien to Konkani; we
have an indigenous word “agttem” (furnace).

Although you said in jest that Bardezkars (Bardezkarns
as well!) like things feminine, the statement does
seem to conform to facts; foreign words are generally
assigned the feminine gender. But this tendency is
found in all the northern dialects, Antruzi more than
Bardexi. It is also a trait they share with Marathi,
where this propensity is even greater.

We do use “ponntti” in Salcete, though not for a
kerosene lamp, but for an oil-lamp made of clay or
stone. The container has a beak (as in a beaker) or a
groove which supports the wick made of cotton. Such
“ponntteo” (made of stone) are commonly found at the
foot of village crosses where one may go with some oil
and cotton wicks and light lamps for whatever
intention. Disposable “ponntteo” are made of shells
especially for illuminating one’s frontage or compound
wall when the procession of St. Sebastian passes by,
in January.

Transition of colours

Influenced by Goa's history and culture, Yolanda de Sousa explores the
undiscovered and the unknown. TANYA ABRAHAM

There are no careful sketches or outline from where her work emerges.
Instead, it is the speed of emotion waiting to be poured forth.

Emotional: Her paintings are always depictions of the moment.

TRANSCENDING from a time when art grappled to attain position as a
source of exploration and intense creativity to a point where it is
exalted as the medium for discovering the gods, Yolanda de Sousa has
moved through its transitions to a style of it s own niche. A Goan
artist highly influenced by its history, culture and ambience that
finds itself in her work, she has managed to explore the undiscovered
and the unknown. Belonging to a period when Goan art was still in the
throes of being appreciated or even completely accepted, Yolanda, like
many of her peers, appears to have struggled and fought through the
mental nuances that art has always required to battle with. Although
not of a time when explorations in painting were completely rejected
like those of Angelo da Fonesca,
Challenges

Yolanda says the journey was one of challenge and struggle. A
challenge that required the product of the Goa College of Art in 1977
to put aside her deep desire to paint in watercolour and oil for
better paying murals. But Yolanda eventually gave up her job as a
designer with the Government of Goa and allowed her spirit to freely
explore the canvas in 1997, when art in its diverse ways began
attaining a platform in Goa to expose itself. To her, it "appeared a
ripe moment of discovery wherefrom a journey would begin" to the
eternity of colours, form and texture. Using acrylic, a medium was
then beginning to gain popularity, Yolanda's paintings gathered a feel
for themselves.

Key moments in her life initiated an emotion or an outburst of thought
and experience of great intensity expressed through her strokes and
blend of colours, which led to the discovery of a technique she now
delves in and marks her as an artist of calibre discovered during the
Football World Cup, a sport with which she once had a love affair.
Expressing the momentum and excitement of the game in progress on
canvas at a time of extreme energy, she found a corner of the board
bearing a confluence of colours and fine texture that portrayed an
almost ceramic-like appearance.

Creating and recreating by submitting to the lucidity of acrylic
paint, Yolanda concentrated upon a procedure of its usage that remains
the highlight of her work today. There are no careful sketches or
outline from where her work emerges. Instead it is the speed of
emotion she is consumed with waiting to be poured forth. The colours
blend in an almost coagulating manner, thick and full of texture,
causing special blends of colour and form at points of juncture.

To Yolanda, working with this technique is almost like working with
watercolours, where she allows coats of paint to dry and repeats
colours by using fine shades and darkening at points to give the
required effect. The 'crack effect' is also deliberate; it extends to
her entire work with a precision that allows one to believe it to be a
jigsaw of ceramic pieces glued together.

Although the procedure allows a natural sheen to the painting, Yolanda
explains, she seals it offering a much greater shine for a glossy,
ceramic appearance.

Highly influenced by emotions, her paintings are always depictions of
the moment. As in a series with images of her childhood: an ancestor,
a church or her old Goan home; or the presence of architecture,
remnants of a previous job of designing the Crafts Complex in Goa.

And the influence of Picasso, an artist she recalls having deeply
studied at college: "I like his style of emotion and the strength in
his paintings." Or the use of writing on her paintings, the need for
expelling a feeling or thought, often in Portuguese that she scripts
in Hindi. Some that can be comprehended; others a hidden mystery but
all merge into her painting to create a certain unique style.

In truth, Yolanda's works are a mixture of expressions that take a
strong position with the use of monochrome colours that then slowly
flows into an almost transient sense of being through her special
technique and then a sudden creative burst that converges to the
interpretation of the spectator. A transition of colours that to her
are on a constant voyage of exploring and depicting, of a journey that
began long ago to find answers wrapped in the mystery of a

CORNEL DACOSTA wrote:

Intellectually, I disagree with your conclusion. I would agree that
"pure" Christianity and caste are theologically incompatibility. As
for Catholicism, it spread across various civilizations by finding
creative ways of incorporating the "pagan" rituals of that
civilization into the Catholic religion.

Ever wondered why there exists an Easter *bunny* that, of all things
lays *eggs*? See
http://altreligion.about.com/cs/alchemy/a/mpreviss.htm, or google
"catholic pagan" as a starting point for an internet research.

Ever wondered why Catholicism has saints? Saints replaced the pagan gods.

Ever wondered why there is a Christmas Tree, and what that has to do
with Christianity? Another "pagan" tradition of cutting down branches
and decorating the homes during winter solstice.

Why is Christmans on Dec 25? Is there any evidence that Christ was
born on that day? Think again. Quoting from
http://www.religioustolerance.org/xmas_sel.htm, "The winter solstice
occurs about DEC-21 each year. It is the day of the year when the
night is longest and the daytime shortest. Using the crude instruments
available, ancient astronomers were able to detect by DEC-25 of each
year that the daytime had become noticeably longer. This date was
chosen, and remains, the traditional date for followers of many
different Pagan religions to celebrate the rebirth of the sun."
Re-birth of the Son.

How about Santa Claus, that jolly old fella? St. Nick? Think again.
Quoting from http://www.religioustolerance.org/santa1.htm, "Some
religious historians and experts in folklore believe that there is no
valid evidence to indicate that St. Nicholas ever existed as a human.
In fact, there are quite a few indicators that his life story was
simply recycled from those of Pagan gods. Many other ancient Pagan
gods and goddesses were similarly Christianized in the early centuries
of the Church. His legends seems to have been mainly created out of
myths attributed to the Greek God Poseidon, the Roman God Neptune, and
the Teutonic God Hold Nickar."

Coming back to the point, I can therefore see how Catholicism, in
India, may not have just condoned, but perhaps even continued to
support and encourage traditional customs in India including the caste
system.

The evidence of the cultural blend is all too visible even today. Go
to some rural parts of India (not Goa) and witness the mass in the
ethnic dialect. Aarti, bhajans, katha during a mass. It is a treat.

Same, I have heard, of Africa.

Personally, I think that this "blend" that Catholicism allows is one
of its strong virtues that indeed makes it an attractive religion.
What better way to get into peoples homes than by first accepting
their current lifestyle?

As to caste discrimination by birth: Firstly, I agree with something
Bhandare said. There will always be some form of discrimination by
birth. We are human. If we are rich, educated, and powerful, we want
to pass these "virtues" on to our children. We want the "best" for
them.

Unfortunately, the only way we determine whether we are "rich",
"powerful", or "educated" is by comparing ourselves with others around
us. It is not sufficient to be "rich". It is important to be richer
than "them". And thus the social stratification.

Are you educated? How do you determine that you are educated? What
makes you think you are educated? It is only a matter of comparison.

Are you scientific and rational? What makes you think so? Only
comparison. The people who concluded that the earth was flat were
just as scientific in their process as the people who later concluded
that the earth was round.

If there were no discrimination by caste, there would be some
alternate form of social stratification. The "haves" create the "have
nots" and pass on this "wealth" to their children. We are all too
human and, except for a few (Christ, Buddha for example, perhaps), we
cannot escape that.

It is of course worth the attempt and I commend you for that.

Allwyn.

Restoring Communal Harmony in Goa
Where to begin ?

By: Wilmix Wilson Mazarello

In any of the "States" of India, or for that matter, in any of the
'Developing Countries' of the World, once the seed of communalism is sown,
it is very, very difficult to stop it growing, if not impossible.

The "seed" of communalism just keeps on growing and growing, multiplying in
leaps and bounds, destroying the very basic "fibre" of the Society.

This is because, the soil of "illiteracy" is a very fertile ground for such
a seed/weed of communalism, to grow and flourish.

To help in this cause, are plenty of Religious Fanatics and Politicians who
work as "full-time-farmers" in this field of destruction, growing and
nurturing the seeds /weeds of communalism.

There are numerous, such examples before us.

This is not a hypothesis, but a "stark reality".

Have a look, at what's going on in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir,
Arunachal Pradesh etc. in India. ('States' plagued by communalism)

Have a look at what's going on in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq,
Ireland, Congo. Libya etc. in the World. ( 'Countries' plagued by
communalism )

As long as "illiteracy" exists and thrives, Politicians and Religious
Fanatics all around the world, will continue to exploit and divide the
people on communal lines, for their selfish gains. Now, let's try and
analyse the situation in our "very own" Goa.

As reported, by our Seniors, the "level" of communalism, that exists today,
was never ever seen in Goa, till its "liberation" from the Portuguese rule
in 1961.

There could have been a slight "slant" in favour of the Christians, during
the 450 odd years of Portuguese Rule, in Goa.

However, the Portuguese Rulers never, really, succeeded in dividing Goans on
communal lines.

In fact, all throughout, Goa has been a fine example of "communal harmony",
to all in India, till it's "Liberation" set in.

But, with "Liberation" also came in, a lot of Literacy and Education, which
should have actually, served as a deterrent, to communalism.

The"high rate" of literacy, should have made it very difficult, for any
communalistic element, to survive here. But, it did not.

What is it then, that went wrong, and worked against the "tide", to promote
the cause of communalism in Goa ?

The fact is that, where Religious Fanatics failed, our Politicians
succeeded.

When our Politicians started talking in "communal tones", they also backed
their efforts with "money-power".

That is, what set in motion the "wind" of communalism in Goa.

It is now, growing and flourishing with every passing day.

What else, can we expect with communalists like Udhay Bhembre. Nagesh
Karmali. N. Shivdas, Dilip Borkar, Prashant Naik etc.who are working
overtime in their 'mission" to eliminate the minorities? To make it worse,
these communalists are openly backed by major political parties in their so
called "mission" to eliminate the minorities.

The seed/weed, of communalism has already been sown in Goa., by these
fanatics, and it is now multiplying, destroying all along its way, the
"communal harmony" that once was a "hallmark" of Goa.

What do we do ?

Can we just, sit quite in helplessness ? The answer is, No!

We must do something. We have to do, something.

The Government of Goa, which is responsible, to quite an extent, for the
present situation has also, to do it's bit.

But, what can the Govt. of Goa, really do in this regard ?

To begin with, the Govt. of Goa, must "analyse the reasons", and "arrest the
causes" that are responsible, for destroying "communal harmony" in Goa.

I for one, can very distinctly, see one causative area, where the Govt. of
Goa can do something, immediately, to "restore confidence" of the Christian
community in Goa.

It is a common fact, that a section of the Hindu community in Goa, is
exploiting Goan christians in the name of "Konkani Language". This "divide"
is seen to be widening, with every passing year.

The Christian community at large, have already started "looking
suspiciously", at all their Hindu brethren, little knowing, that it is not
all the Hindus of Goa, but a small handful of them, that are responsible for
their 'exploitation', both economically and culturally.

I strongly feel, the Govt. of Goa, can start the "healing process" by
immediately giving "official-recognition" to the Roman Script in the
"Official Language Act"

This will, not only, send a "right signal" to all Goans, but will also win
over, the "confidence" of the entire, Christian comm

It was great to witness Taj Mahal getting first place
in the New Seven Wonders of the World at a spectacular
show in the Luz Stadium in Lisbon.
Portugal did itself proud by hosting the event, though
the stadium which can hold more than 60,000 spectators
was less than half full at the beginning and then was
about 60 per cent full towards the end.
Aishwarya Rai was replaced by Bipasha Basu as one of
the three compreses with Ben Kingsley and Hillary
Swank.
Though Ben announced that the Mayor of Agra received
the prize, it looked to me that it the UP chief
minister Mayawati (perhaps I am wrong).
In the end, numbers count. I was interviewed by a TV
channel and what I thought of the event and whether
this was a commercial venture and if it is the right
way to select the wonders.
Great job, Portugal in this great exercise to win
global acclaim.

I had been forceful when i cautioned a good friend against persisting in his

events, i do know that he looked forward to his frequent visits to the only

gather and use information on dissent after small Sikh groups in the West

Now consider this for counterfoil: a Dow Jones weekly claims, today, that a

No matter how deviously one attempts to hurl a cat towards the ozone hole,
it will reorient itself and safely land on its fours. Humans also have a

A spider on the other hand, is a cosmopolitan sage. It does not indulge in

CRIME OR DISEASE ?

Averthanus L. D'Souza.

In the very recent past, strange things have been happening to people in
prominent public office. This, of course, is a reflection of the strange
things that are happening in society. It appears that society is losing its
ethical moorings and is beginning to drift. This drift is affecting not only
the political establishment, but is also becoming manifest in the legal
system, which, in many ways is the guardian of the social mores of any
society. If we look around us, we see clear signs of this ethical erosion.

A well-known film actor drives his heavy SUV on a footpath on which homeless
people are sleeping. This happens in the early hours of the morning, and
there is very strong indication that this film actor is in a state of
inebriation. Several of the poor footpath dwellers are killed or injured.
The culprit is charged with negligent driving instead of being charged with
murder or manslaughter. Some months later there is another incident of a
businessman killing two infants by driving his vehicle on the footpath also
in a state of drunkenness . All kinds of excuses are offered for his crass
action and, again, he is only charged with rash and negligent driving. A
celebrity model and hostess is shot dead at point blank range in Delhi by
the son of a prominent politician. The entire legal process is subverted and
the villain nearly gets off scot-free, until a television channel rakes up
the whole issue and creates public awareness about the dubious role played
by the police establishment and the public prosecutors office in the
subversion of the judicial process. A member of Parliament, belonging to a
political party which cries itself hoarse about its high moral standards is
caught trafficking women to Europe using forged Passports and tampered
documents. These cases are only the tip of the iceberg which have managed to
catch the headlines in our newspapers and TV channels. The more widespread
morass is hidden from public view.

Public reaction is very mixed. Some people are dismayed but remain unmoved.
"What can I do about this?" Some simply pass it off as inevitable in
society. Why are there different standards for the poor and for the rich and
influential?

The erosion in the ethical standards of our society is slow, widespread,
almost imperceptible, insidious and camouflaged by verbal subterfuge. The
High Court of Bombay, Panjim Bench recently banned all bull fights (locally
called "dhirios" ). A local TV channel carried a news item showing a leader
of a local political party claiming that these were not, in fact,
bull-fights but head buttings. He took great pains to explain that the bulls
were not made to fight; they were merely coaxed to butt each other. He
failed to explain how bulls "fight" normally. This is consistent with the
verbal camouflaging of otherwise socially undesirable behaviours. Drunken
drivers who kill children and pavement dwellers are charged with negligent
driving. School children who shoot their teachers and companions are excused
on the ground that they are "emotionally disturbed."

Very recently, the National Commission for Women proposed to the National
Commission for the Revision of the Criminal Law that adultery should be
"decriminalized" and should be treated merely as a "social offence." This is
in line with the "decriminalization" of prostitution and treating it merely
as a social offence. Now the homosexuals are agitating that "same sex
marriages" should be legitimized. Paedophiles have already been active in
brainwashing society into believing that their sexual exploitation of
children is, in fact, a socially desirable activity.

The worrying aspect of these trends is that they attempt to create a
distinction between what is socially "offensive" and what is criminal. The
assumption (?) that adultery can be acknowledged to be a "social offence"
and not be treated as a crime is preposterous, to say the least. What is
even more worrying is that the National Commission for Women proposes to
exempt women from all liability (criminal and moral) even when they are the
initiators of the adulterous relationship. If this thinking is pursued to
its logical (illogical?) conclusion then women will not be liable for the
crime of murder - just because they are women! One can see the crassness in
this way of thinking. This is what has led to the epidemic of unethical
social deviants claiming all kinds of "rights" based on their deviance. Thus

Hi Cornel,

I think you misunderstand Alfredchacha. What you see
is neither pomposity nor arrogance. It is simply the
pixyish emulation of old English wordsmiths such as
William Evart Gladstone, Gilbert Keith Chesterton and
George Bernard Shaw. From what I know of his youth his
affinities lie squarely among selfless satyagrahis,
cuttichhaap (penniless) Konknniche mogi, Khaadi-clad
Gandhians, and perhaps, harijans as well. He is the
last of the Mohanicans (friends of my idealistic uncle
Mohan).

Cheers,

Santosh

Dear Bhandare,

Thanks for your clarifications on the caste system in India and Goa. I agree
with much of what you wrote.

However, I have been reading your other posts with a bit of disappointment. For
an intelligent guy, you have been contradicting yourself. I think you started
the thread "No more religious postings" from you. Then you went on to do
precisely the opposite ... with some interesting research. You had some
excuses, most of which were irrelevant - and you know it.

I have not read any (to quote you), "self styled champions of secularism who
use the caste system, devdasi and other ills of the Hindu society to justify
things like colonialism and religious persecution by missionaries of bygone
colonial era." I will be more than happy to debate this lie on your RSS web
site. Just like the perpetrators of the "bygone colonial era", (the middle
ages), you are making-up your own excuses to justify your actions. FYI
champions of secularism on Goanet are generally not very religious.

Please ask yourself whether your posts are adding heat or light to the issues
being discussed or more likely those that you generate. Thanks for your
consideration. Also can you do something to the RSS-like web page about the
Inquisition in Goa by Teo De Souza; which the author claims he never wrote?
Por Favor, use your influence.

After your post, are abstracts from an Internet web page of an interview with
an author who wrote a novel / historical account about the Inquisition in Goa
- Richard Zimler's novel Guardian of the Dawn. Goan authors and wannabe
authors would find the following of great interest, especially after our last
discussion about writing.:=)) Likely in two years someone on Goanet or on the
RSS web site will quote this book as authoritative.

Kind Regards, GL

-- Bhandare

Dear Gilbert: My 'tirade' was not directed against any of Cornel's posts or
against Goan catholics in general. They were more against those self styled
champions of secularism who use the caste system, devdasi and other ills of the
hindu society to justify things like colonialism and religious persecution by
missionaries of bygone colonial era.

Abstract from the internet web page interview with Richard Zimler: Author of
Guardian of the Dawn.
http://www.rediff.com/news/2005/sep/14inter1.htm

The research involved in Guardian of the Dawn is obviously immense. Could you
tell me a little about the kind of preparatory work you had to put in?

To write the book, I tried to read everything I could about daily life on the
west coast of India -- more specifically, in and around Goa -- at the end of
the sixteenth century. The Internet has made that sort of research much easier
than it used to be, and I was able to order books about everything from
traditional medical practices -- including recipes for specific ailments -- to
animals and plants indigenous to that region.

When I write a novel, I want to get all the details right, so this is very
important. Of course, it was also vital for me to know as much as I could about
Hinduism and Catholicism. As you mentioned, I studied Comparative Religion at
university, so this was pretty easy. One of the main characters in the novel is
a Jain, which is a religion I have always been curious about, so I read three
or four books about Jainism as well. It was wonderful to be able to learn a bit
about Jain belief and practice. Writing is always a great opportunity for me to
keep learning.

Did you visit Goa at any point? If not, what did you base your descriptions of
the state upon?

No, I decided not to go to Goa, because I didn't want any images from modern
Goa to infiltrate into the novel. I didn't want to risk inadvertently putting
something from today into it. So I based my descriptions on other areas of the
world I've visited that have similar flora and fauna -- Thailand, for instance.
Also, I read all I could about the city so that my descriptions of the
buildings, for instance, would be accurate. I then used my imagination, which
is the most important thing for a writer. I now have a landscape in my head
that is Goa -- and the surrounding region -- in 1600. I don't know how it
developed. It's almost magical.

GOANET HIGHLIGHTS BY CORNEL DACOSTA

There is a 'raging controversy' over the issue of public holidays in
Goa/India. Readers of the Goan Voice (UK) will be quite surprised, as
I was, to discover that, there are so many angles to perceive what
such public holidays represent, and how difficult it is to determine
how many there should be in a calendar year so as to please as many
people as possible.

In a short perceptive piece titled Hands Off, Pravin Sabnis provides a
discussion on the merits, or not, of human touch upon others. He
explores the problem of touch by way of physical punishment on erring
students by teachers, the loving touch upon others and misconstrued
touch deemed to be sexual harassment.

On Goanet we have an interesting presentation of Michael Moore's
recent prize winning film Sicko at the Cannes Festival. The film, now
on general release, severely castigates the American health system. It
also praises the socialised health care systems of several European
countries. Posters on Goanet are keen "to hear the positive and
negative experiences of health care from those living in Canada, UK,
France etc". Hopefully, GV(UK) readers will oblige in this respect.

In several hilarious pieces but with some serious underpinnings, find
out from [the] Hit and Make approach to Konkani Vocabulary Building,
how new words are accommodated into Konkani. Not only do we find
details of many unusual terms, but there is also absorbing commentary
on their origins and usage.

Zena Costa tells us about the achievement of Goa's Steffie Cardozo
(18) who won a gold medal for the Shot Putt in the Federation Cup
National Athletics Championship in Madurai. I am sure we will want to
wish Steffi well in future competitions.

Finally, several recent posts on Goanet had informed readers about the
difficulty of obtaining labour in Goa for building work as well as in
running restaurants, hotels etc. This was linked to an in-depth
discussion about the mobility of capital and labour in thriving
economic conditions. Likewise, UK media has told us a lot about Polish
workers such as plumbers, builders and others who have made a beeline
to the UK and indeed undercut British wages. The paradox now is that
Poland itself suffers from an acute shortage of labour and has had to
make arrangements for substantial replacement labour from India. Will
this have a further deteriorating impact on Goa?

Hei Rui,

GoaNet is predominantly Christian forum with a Roman Catholic bent
although it would like to be perceived as nondenominational and
secular.

For those who believe that a Christian 'belief system' has NOTHING to
do with 'Education, Politics, Economic, Social System' probably also
believe that to be a good Catholic, one must attend weekly Mass and
receive the Eucharist only after going to confession, and that too
only if deemed necessary. I will concede that I, too, don't see the
connect with goalkeeping but I'll let Dkr. Karmo reply to that.

Can we ever have a serious discussion about anything without having
our opinions influenced by the belief system by which we have been
brainwashed from before we could even think? Catholicism has taken
this technique to an incredible art, causing millions of anguished
parents to cower protectively over their infants until the stain of
Original Sin could be washed away by the waters of Baptism. Their
fear that, in the event of neonatal death, their tiny souls would be
lost in Limbo has now been thankfully alleviated by the learned
Vatican theologians. That has not stopped Catholic parents from
beginning this indoctrination process as soon as a toddler can hold a
prayerbook. In jurisdictions like Ontario where there is a perceived
benefit to publicly funded Catholic education, baptisms are only to
ensure the child's acceptance into the local Catholic school.

It is said that 'curiosity killed the cat' but what wasn't mentioned
was that what didn't kill it, made it smarter. Ever since we parted
ways with our simian ancestors, we have been getting progressively
smarter as a species since we didn't have a tail to keep us going
around in circles. Most of what we have today we owe to the concept
of gods and supernatural entities which pervaded every facet of
ancient civilization. Our legal system is a prime example.

I do agree with others on this list that we should keep our
discussions civil but I don't think that there is any logical basis to
remove religion from the discussion. My ONLY function on GoaNet is to
provide a secular viewpoint, illuminating the inconsistencies of
belief on topics I see relevant.

Sincerely,

Kevin Saldanha

Hei,

Is there some reason why Christianity is brought up consistently in almost
every topic in goanet-request?

Christianity is a belief system and has nothing to do with Education,
Politics, Economic, Social System let alone goan Christian Goalkeeping
paradigm shift.

Come on it is about time we stop bringing in our pennies worth of
christianity or any religious belief system into topics for serious
discussion. No wonder we spend so much time chasing our own tails unless of
course we want to confuse the cats.

The Phantom of Cyberspace

He haunts the innards of cyberspace
Like a spectre, a spirit he darts across the internet;
To this forum he is a valuable asset
But no one knows the identity, not yet,
Of this wondrous phantom of Goanet.

He regales us with his mystifying anecdotes,
Quizzes us with his photographic vignettes,
Riddles us with flowers and fruits, houses and bridges,
And many a time have I not in vain tried to identify these?
Is a celebrity, a star or just a benevolent and humble soul,
An enigmatic phantom of cyberspace?

He amuses me with nostalgia,
Film clips and tunes of the sixties and seventies,
He keeps me close to home with his photography
But his cover is not blown, not yet,
Of this phantom of cyberspace, spectre of goanet.

He doesn't find himself steeped in forum squabble,
Nor does he post any twaddle,
His statements are not boastful,
Nor his arguments bashful,
But for sure this phantom surely loves his homeland,
And in turn keeps me in touch, firsthand.

Goa's Woman FIDE Master Bhakti Kulkarni (ELO 2112) added yet another feather
in her cap by winning the Silver medal in the Asian Girls Under 16 Chess
Championships which concluded in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Bhakti started off the tournament terribly by losing in the first and third
rounds. However, she recovered superbly thereafter winning the next six on
the trot and beating the top seed and hot favourite WIM Padmini Rout (ELO
2212) in the process. The first place was bagged by Nakhbayeva Guliskhan
(ELO 2024) of Kazakhastan whereas Padmini had to remain content with the
Bronze medal.

Bhakti thus gets the unique distinction of having won three medals in three
consecutive Asian Championships. She won the Bronze in New Delhi in 2005,
the Gold in Teheran in 2006 before completing her treble in Tashkent this
year. Bhakti also has won the Commonwealth Under 18 Girls Gold medal in
Mumbai in 2006 to cement her place as flagbearer of Goan chess.

She will be received in New Delhi on her return by her parents and AICF Vice
President and GSCA President Sameer A. Salgaocar. The last mentioned stated
that this was a proud day in the history of Goan sports and that Bhakti, her
coach Dronacharya Awardee Raghunandan Gokhale and parents should be lauded
for their efforts!
