[Goanet-News] TRI Continental Film Festival - Day 3
http://www.GOANET.org TRI Continental Film Festival - Dona Paula, Goa, Sep 28 - Oct 2, 2007 http://www.moviesgoa.org/tricontinental/tricon.htm Online Media Partner: http://www.goanet.org Moving Images and International Centre Goa are organizing the TRI Continental Film Festival in Dona Paula, Goa from Friday September 28 to Tuesday October 2, 2007 Initiated in Argentina in 2002, South Africa in 2003 and India in 2004, the TRI Continental Film Festival has since become an annual platform for narrative, documentary, feature and short-length films from the three continents that form part of the global South. Throughout the year, the Festival's Travelling Screen also tours various cities across India, taking these award-winning and critically-acclaimed films to universities, cultural institutions and citizens' groups, and sparking discussions, diatribes and debates around human rights and social justice. Here are the movies that will be screened on Day 3. Ask Me, I'm Positive (South Africa Lesotho, 2004, Dir. Teboho Edkins, 48 min) Sunday, 30 September, 2007 - 10:30 am Thabo, Thabiso and Moalosi are young, urban Basotho men on a mission. They travel with a mobile cinema unit through the mountains of Lesotho, screening their film to very remote communities. In a country where almost a third of the people are HIV+ they are the nucleus of a tiny group that is living openly with the virus. They are pioneers, they are also film stars, and are very attractive to women. How does one go about picking up girls if you have just publicly disclosed your HIV status? The three young men open up in a way seldom seen on screen. This film gets to the heart of their lives and dilemmas. The Journey (Sancharam) (India, 2004, Dir. Ligy Pullapally, 107 min) Sunday, 30 September, 2007 - 11:30 am Set in lush, rural Kerala, Sancharam begins with the childhood friendship between beautiful, outgoing Delilah, a Christian girl, and the sober, idealistic, and inwardly focused Kiran, whose Nair family settles next door. They quickly become inseparable, and in time Kiran feels attracted to Delilah, but suppresses it. She finds an outlet by writing love letters to Delilah for Rajan, a local boy pursuing her. When Delilah learns the truth about the letters, she responds - to Kiran. As neighbors begin to talk, Delilah's family flies into panic mode with arranged marriage plans; meanwhile Kiran fights back, leaving Delilah in the middle of a tug of war. No More Tears, Sister: An Anatomy of Hope and Betrayal (Canada, 2004, Dir. Helene Klodawsky, 80 min) Sunday, 30 September, 2007 - 3:00 pm A story of love, revolution and betrayal, No More Tears Sister explores the price of truth in times of war. Set during the violent ethnic conflict that has enveloped Sri Lanka over decades, the documentary recreates the courageous and vibrant life of renowed human rights activist Dr. Rajani Thiranagama. Mother, anatomy professor, author and symbol of hope, Rajani was assassinated at the age of thirty-five. 15 years after Rajani's death, her charismatic older sister Nirmala, a former Tamil militant and political prisoner, journeys back to Sri Lanka. She has decided to break her long silence about Rajani's passionate life and her brutal slaying. Joining her are Rajani's husband, sisters and grown daughters, as well as fellow activists forced underground. Stunningly photographed, using rare archival footage, intimate correspondence and poetic recreations, the film recounts Rajani's dramatic story and delves into rarely explored themes - revolutionary women and their dangerous pursuit of justice. Leila Khaled Hijacker (Sweden, 2005, Dir. Lina Makboul, 58 min) Sunday, 30 September, 2007 - 6:00 pm Sitting in the departure lounge at the Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Rome she looked like a stylish lady. No one would have guessed what she was about to do. She had bought the white dress a couple of days earlier in the exclusive shop by the Spanish steps to match her handbag and her white sun hat. She held her handbag tight. It was only a couple of minutes before the departure of flight TWA 840. She had just met her fellow hijacker, Salim, for the first time a couple of hours earlier. They had first class tickets. The gun hurt her hip. She had taped it inside her panties. It was August 29, 1969 and TWA flight 840 had just taken off. The destination was Tel Aviv, Israel. A short while later she left her seat, threatened the crew with hand grenades and entered the cockpit. She took hold of the microphone announcing, Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please, kindly fasten your seat belts. This is your new Captain speaking. The Che
[Goanet-News] Goanet Reader: We Are Mightier Than Death (By Ravindra Kelekar, translated by Augusto Pinto)
http://www.GOANET.org TRI Continental Film Festival - Dona Paula, Goa, Sep 28 - Oct 2, 2007 http://www.moviesgoa.org/tricontinental/tricon.htm Online Media Partner: http://www.goanet.org RECOGNITION FOR A PROMINENT WRITER: A HONOUR FOR RAVINDRA KELEKAR The Sahitya Akademi conferred its most prestigious award, the Fellowship, on Konkani writer Ravindra Kelekar earlier this year. In a country of 1.1 billion, there can be only 21 Fellows of the Sahitya Akademi at any given time -- hence Goa and Konkani literature are honoured by the unique place accorded to Ravindrabab in the pantheon of Indian literature. The formal conferment of the Fellowship is to take place on October 6, 2007 at the Kala Akademi at 5pm. The function is being organized by the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi and is open to all. More than sixty writers from various States will be present. The award is a recognition of Ravindrabab's pioneering service in the resurgence of the Konkani language, and his eminence as a writer. It is not possible to list his prodigious contribution to Konkani literature, with a voice of sanity in the increasingly intolerant atmosphere and warped vision that clouds our landscape, not least as editor of the prestigious monthly magazine JAAG which he has edited for more two decades. A scholar, freedom fighter, activist, politician and creative thinker, he is a secular Hindu who has been called a modern acharya. Writing has been, for him, a form of action, an intervention of profound significance in our giddy world where few have time to think, let alone read. He is a communicator and his favourite forms are the diary, the travelogue and the essay. Like the poets Bakibab Borkar and ManoharRai SarDessai, Ravindrabab straddles cultures and languages, both Indian and European and these influences had a catalytic effect on their uniquely humane sensibility. Ravindrabab is also indisputably the most erudite Goan of his generation with a wide range of interests and reading . Apart from literary works in Indian languages (he translates and writes in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati and has won awards in these languages) he has delved into French, Portuguese and German literature, philosophy, economics, astronomy and much else. All this wealth of knowledge sits lightly on his shoulders and is distilled even more delicately in his prose. A selection of his essays has been translated by Vidya Pai and is due to be published soon. Moira-based translator Augusto Pinto (with help from Suresh Amonkar) has translated the essay below. It has been selected for readers of Goanet by Ravindrabab himself. -- Maria Aurora Couto [EMAIL PROTECTED] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - We Are Mightier Than Death By Ravindra Kelekar I need a siesta of at least half an hour every day, for when I get up I'm so completely refreshed, that I can attack the evening with as much enthusiasm as I did the morning. Yes, I feel it's a new day altogether. Yesterday was Sunday. There were quite a number of guests, and so I missed my afternoon nap. By evening I was dog-tired and so I went to bed at nine -- pretty early for me. As a result I woke up at 4.30 in the morning. I had a wash, and then I thought I'd read, but then I realized that I'd have to put on the lights and wake everyone up, so I went out and sat in our razangovn, which is what we call the quadrangle of our house in Konkani. I said to myself -- let me watch the sun rise. There was dead silence everywhere, a silence which the occasional screechy chirp of an insect or two made more eerie. Slowly the eeriness began to assume a character of its own. I glanced upwards and recognized quite a few constellations and stars. As I gazed at them, I don't know when, but I dozed off to sleep. When I woke up again it was a little later in the morning but still dark. The clock in the sitting room went tick tick tick tick. I've no idea why this sound gripped my attention but I began to feel that this tick tick tick tick was being deliberately directed at me. I shuddered. Somehow a feeling began to creep over me that this sound was the sound of Death, striding purposefully towards me, and every-time I heard it go tick tick tick tick, I felt it had moved that many steps closer to me. I got a start and said, is He coming so soon? Damn it, I've so many tasks left incomplete, I must get them done and owe (over) with or else they'll be left unfinished. I got up and went inside to work. I am quite like anybody else. I know I've got to die some day and I also know that no one but no one can escape death. That even the very greatest have had to suffer this fate -- that too I know but somehow I've always lived my life

[Goanet] MUSIC: Bands hunt for new musicians
TRI Continental Film Festival - Dona Paula, Goa, Sep 28 - Oct 2, 2007 http://www.moviesgoa.org/tricontinental/tricon.htm For public viewing. Registration at The International Centre Goa. (Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org Bands hunt for new musicians BY FRANKEY FERNANDES VASCO, SEPT 23 - While football clubs in the State are busy headhunting for new talent to strike the ball, beat groups are involved in a similar exercise to hunt for new musicians to strike the right chord. Bands and beat groups are busy scouting for musicians from rival groups or are ushering in fresh talent, as they gear up for dances, weddings, parties and beat shows for the forthcoming season. While popular groups like Lynx, Forefront and The Big City Band have managed to keep their members intact, the situation is quite different for other bands, as they find it difficult to keep their band mates together. Renegades have been disbanded as most band members have left for greener pastures. While keyboard player Trevor Mendes, vocalist Michael Fernandes and guitarist Arthur D'Costa have moved to the Gulf, Xavier and Jerry have joined the Crimson Tide. Lead guitarist Errol has joined a gospel band. The Lynx lost their young drummer Joe for a lucrative job on a cruise liner, but netted in a bigger catch with Goa's best-known percussionist, Assumption Nunes, a music teacher and guru to most upcoming drummers. Forefront has added in another member and saxophonist Joaquim Fernandes, a versatile musician who also plays drums and keyboards. The Cascades, who have been successful with female vocalists in the past, will witness yet another change this season. The band's earlier female crooner, Beverelly Menezes, has taken up a job in France and replacing her will be young singer Silvina Lopes. In North Goa, bands such as Alcatrazz, Crimson Tide, Brothers in Arms, India, Blue Waves, Lace and Cream have also got one or two new members for the season. There have been changes among some bands in South Goa as well. While the petite crooner Marushka Rebello and lead guitarist Glen Pacheco have joined Archies, the Silver Strings have replaced Joaquim with Joe (ex-Seby and Wings) on the drums and Gavin has come in to replace guitarist Terrance. Other South Goa bands, including Pure Magic, Big City Band, The Big Country Band, Status 4 and Sky High have so far managed with the same line-up, as the bands are all set to usher in the new season with the latest hits. http://www.oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=1652cid=2

And you will hopefully excuse the length and insanity of my post. I feel that it is perfectly fine to speak misturad Konkani. So you should do what comes to you, based on what you imbibed and keep at it. I used to speak it with my mother, and over time the admixtures from other languages are not intruding as much. But some of those inflections should be maintained. It is fine for the linguists to suggest (by any form employed) otherwise. We must remember that Konkani is not entirely being nursed at the teat of the linguists, lexicographers, or critics (books, etc.). It has also been fed some formula (think Farex). Hence when we see these various fanttea, it gets overwhelming. There are writers and many others doing their part towards expressing in various forms and grammars-- a continual process. A language such as ours will have various flavors; this is how stored insights and experiences from various regions through their dialects make us see our analects, and shape a composite tounge. Mai bhas. Never a Pai Bhas or a Shappai Bhas, or even a Shamai Bhas. The Mai is always current and worthily fecund. If one wishes one may come to Konkani later in life, but options have to be presented to children. So imagine ones child who takes to South Asian languages or translates, from the German into Konkani, or the Konkani proverbs into Japanese. I can guaarantee there will be a market. But one would need to know the Japanse too or at least have an agent. There are doctors and engineers writing poetry and essays in Konkani. And they chose that path or saw it fit to do so, accordingly. The arts though are not an option for everyone in the sense of a profession. But this should not be a concern to parents who are well off, although such choices have impact, as in perceptions and stature. I could study art, and assorted madnesses because I was materially and financially helped in my art/design studies; besides have a fellow mate, who is unconcered with the ostentatious, and how much money I bring home. I understand that few are born to the manor. My feeling though is that some are born to have their cake and eat it too. For the others it is about who their child will marry, what profession they will have, how will society view them and the parent, etc. Most of these questions arise because at the institutional level--state, church, they have consistently let people down, while laying down one sided options. So we have this Romi and Nagari script horror, furthermore, in the Church we have a language usage that purports to levitate us but essentially busts our kneecaps. None of that Konkani thinking seems to have made much of an overall impact, and neither do we use it at home. So the only option left is to study more. Some have the tools, many others do not and so, have to find them. So I have to reach out to find specific words much before I can even comtemplate writing cogently. And it is hard, as one of my earler posts will make it apparent. But for certain reasons children in Goa (being educated in Englsh) are easily bashful, even those who speak Konkani. We very rarely see a product that has a Konkani name, or hair styles for that matter, that one may request in Konkani (Bai/Baba maca kaaru, or shaggi cut di ghe/go/re: kaaru and shaggi are used in Japan! We use English), or a bathroom sign that says Ostoreo/Ostreo/Bailmunshayan-Women. My point being that as one steeps tea, so could a language be pickled. In doing so one steps into it, much as one does a jive, the twist and the swing, with that same urba (a loan word quite possibly). The Maharashtrians say, Amchi Marathi, valavte tashi vallte. Our Marathi, as it is swayed, it sways (or bends). Its much less now, but Goans would form demarcations, by simply being taken askance at the sounds of the others Konkani--Bardez or Shassti or Dharwar Konkani; in doing so implying division. I have been working towards developing some bilingual, and some visual projects that will see print but am a few years away. I hope many others are thinking the same thing. Bringing poets together, getting scientists to write tight 1000-1,500 word essays, in English and Konkani, with glossaries, a small DICTIONARY of DOMESTIC ABUSE terms. Aside from knowing, if one goes to court one is able to reasonably articulate. But few would consider this to be their lot. I am also concepting some ideas on stalking. One can only imagine how deep such fangs have sung into Goa. I have a relative who came on the

You and I will be dead in less than 50 years from now ...and no one is mourning for us yet! I cannot say whether you speak a bastardized version of Konkani any more than I can certify that the Konkani written in Sunaparant is the language I know. The child of parents who are legaly married can be a bastard in the eyes of a religion and the child of religiously married parents can be a bastard in the eyes of the law. It all depends on who is judging whom! BUT, as Voltaire advised, if a Mother calls her son a Bastard, believe her. Some time back we were told that Konkani in Roamn script would die with the presently dying generation. Then came Gemma, a little girl from London with a Konkani speaking grandmother still in UK. From Divar she started sending emails to her grandmother in Konkani and Roman script. To help persons like her write better, the Govt. run Goa Konkani Akademi published an Orthography Romi Lipint Konknni Borounchi Nemavoll with two stalwarts of exclusive Devanagri Konkani in its committee. On 29 Sept. 2007, the TSKK is releasing its Konknni Course in Roamn Script with explanations in English for the new learners. It already has a similar book in Devanagri script. Eighty seven schools in Karwar and Mangalore areas teach Konkani in Kannada script. 126 Diocesan schools teach Konkani in the primary section in Goa. Most schools offer Konkani as a subject upto SSC. Eleven year old London-returned Gemma, acted in tiatr that won the first prize at the Kala Academy, Panaji. She played a major role as a child artiste. She will live more than 50 years more. Konkani will live with her. If someone still thinks Konkani is dying in the next 50 to 100 years in Goa and rest of the Konkan, he or she is in another world ...perhaps virtual reality. It is not based on ground truth. People are not crazy to publish books that no one will read ...and there are at least five books in Konkani being released every month. Three were released last week at the first anniversary celebrations of JIVIT, a colour magazine for Konkani readers who love it in the common dialects and in Roman script. (Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org The swashbuckling revealation of the pseudo secularists that there is no freedom of religion for Muslims in Goa looks like they have lost their balance and coherence. They have mislaid their wisdom and do not know what to say. Flabbergasted, they seems standing in the ruins of their make believe world. They are shouting on the rooftops with choked cries in their throats and shedding crocodile tears as sympathizers of humanity. The gloom on their faces is loud and clear. Doleful, dejected, disconsolate, they are unable to reconcile with the turn of events. Ask any Goan Muslims who are co existing here for generations peacefully with other communities if anyone has prevented them from practicing their religion throughout their life. A stray incident in Curtorim/Chinchinim can not be set as an paradigm for above topic unless proven in depth the ground realities. To trace the communal tension in Savordem or Chinchnim issue is a travesty of truth It does not require anyone to tell that killing is inhuman in he name of relegion. The madrassas which are funded by Jehadis and ISI are finding to sprawl its wings in usually serene Goa. These madrassas are the breeding ground for terrorist in the name of imparting religious education they sow seeds of hatred towards other religions in the young minds. There is nothing wrong if the local people are opposing this move. So do not create a divide between Mulslims and majority community with your prejudiced views. It is important for perverted notions of secularism for majority community to learn. So long as Hindu politics were divided on caste and region secularism was safe. Appeasement of Catholics communalism was a matter of fact, conceived by cunning, corrupt Congress party to conceal their gluttony and questioned by none without inviting the stigma of communalism. This brand of secularism is practiced unabashedly and indeed is a passport to secularism or to put it more appropriately, pseudo-secularism. But there was marked indifference and insensitivity to the Hindu senti-ments by the intelligentsia, the media especially the English dailies of Goa which are edited by sold out Editors and sections of political leadership styling themselves as secular. In Goa the secularism is sought to be justified by criticizing the majority Community and its organizations. The intransigence of the entire spectrum of political leadership is no less callous. The Hindus are taken for granted in the name of secularism The politicized secularism did not provide for any room for consideration of Hindu majority which largely remained inarticulate, disorganized and lacked the political value for the secular political leadership to take cognizance of inspite of being in the majority, the Hindus are lacking a political constituency in Goa. It is not Pseudo Secularists faith in secularism as much as their concern for the minority community vote bank and has become a defining manifestation of anti-Hindu communalism that is packed and marketed as secu-larism. The selective morality has redefined secularism as a politically convenient and expedient concept to mean maligning of majority community and exploitation of minority vote banks. What kind of mankind is this if one religion do not have a healthy respect for each other. If the minorities cannot be suppressed in a democracy, neither can the majority be subjugated. And that is the dilemma the lack of moral leadership in Goa. The failure to rationalize and deal with the communal monster in a detached manner can never be a motivating factor unless the political parties give up vote bank politics or shed anti-majoritism in the name of secularism. The secular fundamentalism and bigotry is equally responsible for vitiating the communal atmosphere in India. It neither combats communalism nor promotes secularism. In fact, there is a marked reluctance to even as much as to reprimand the minority communalism. Such is the inhibition that if at all there is token criticism, it is unfailingly attributed to something because of the Hindus and their organization. Secularism has come to be redefined as anti-Hindu communalism. We have a Government in Goa which promotes not true secularism but pseudo secularism, not to protect the Goan welfare but to protect the political interest of the Congress party. Hold onto anything but the US dollar or any currency that is not pegged to the US currency, with one notable exception - the Chinese Yuan. The Chinese Yuan is expected to climb up in value w.r.t the USD (inspite of the pegging) for a considerable period of time, that is, for the next 5+ years. Except for the money I saved this year and about 25% of my old money, all of my remaining investments are in non USD based assets since the middle of last year. I must say, it turned out to be a pretty good hedge. My only big screw-up is a bad timing on a bungalow we are building in Goa. The construction is currently in progress and very soon we would be forced to exchange a substantial amount of money in USD to get Rupees to pay the remaining balance. As months go by, it's only going to get worse, but I am hoping to see if I get a little lucky to change big bux during a small window. This may be of interest to many non resident Goans. You see, it has been my experience (with a frequency of 2 out of 3 times in the past 12 years that I have been in the US), that the Indian Rupee tends to fall in value or tends to stay in the neighborhood of the year's low, towards the last quarter of the calendar year. I didn't quite fully understand the phenomenon, but it's possibly because of a sudden rush by Indian importers to buy USD to pay their bills by year end. There are probably many web sites on the INTERNET where you can see this stuff for the past 12 years. So if I am lucky, I could find a nice deal in the next 3 months, after which the Rupee could zoom back up. But then again, if you analyze the fundamentals, the chances of the Rupee coming down in value in this year's final quarter are more than remote Jim F New York -- Original message -- From: CORNEL DACOSTA [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Jim Many thanks for an interesting analysis re the value of the dollar. But he died a martyr at 23. The title Shaheed (martyr) has become synonymous with an inspirational icon born in the Khatkar Kalan village in Punjab. Bhagat Singhs family was passionately patriotic and had participated in numerous movements supporting independence of India. However, it was the Jalianwala Bagh Massacre of 1919 that deeply impacted young Bhagats mind. At the tender age of 13, he turned freedom fighter. In his teens, Bhagat ran away from home to escape marriage, and enrolled with Naujawan Bharat Sabha. Bhagat was a voracious reader and a very expressive writer. He read a lot of poetry and literature which was written by Punjabi writers. At the age of 16, Bhagats essay grabbed the attention of the Punjab Hindi Sahitya Sammelan and professor Bhimsen Vidyalankar. At the latters request, Bhagat joined the Hindustan Republican Association. He wrote for and edited Urdu and Punjabi newspapers. Along with Chandrashekar Azad, Ramprasad Bismill, Ashfaqulla Khan, Bhagats revolutionary activities became the stuff of folklore. In 1928, Lala Lajpat Rai succumbed to injuries inflicted by the violent lathi charge on a non-violent march. Bhagat vowed to take revenge. Along with Rajguru, Gopal and Sukhdev, he plotted to kill the police chief, Scott. However, in a case of mistaken identity, Saunders, instead of Scott, was shot. He quickly left Lahore to escape the police. To avoid recognition, he shaved his beard and cut his hair. To counter the revolutionaries, the British enacted the draconian Defence of India Act. To voice their protest, Bhagat and Batukeshwar Dutt threw non-lethal bombs in the assembly on April 8, 1929. Whilst shouting Inquilab Zindabad! they also threw leaflets stating that it takes a loud voice to make the deaf hear. Bhagats leaflet stated that 'It is easy to kill individuals but you cannot kill the ideas.' While in jail, Bhagat launched a hunger strike advocating the rights of prisoners. His philosophical and political thinking is well documented in the diary he wrote in jail. When accused of vanity of not seeking salvation in the face of death, Bhagat wrote a pamphlet entitled Why I am an atheist. On March 23, 1931, Bhagat, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged. He was just over 23 years then, but he had developed an immortal dimension of inspiration for the youth... Bhagat Singh has shown that the length of the road does not matter... We must develop new dimensions NOW, dont wait to do it later... Regards Pravin 24 September 2007, Goa. To make a short story long :) contrary to your belief, Goa and Goans have actually benefited from an undervalued Rupee, along with the rest of India. In plain English, if one has been struggling to find enough money to buy simple bread, he can't dream of investing whatever little resources he has, to build a bakery to make the bread cheaper! You need external guys to bring in the capital, so that they can invest and build efficient bakeries and generate enough competition, so that eventually, the price of bread comes down, to the level of affordability. (Damn, do I sound like Alan Greenspan ?). Because of several factors, including the artificially low value of the Rupee and in response to offers of higher yield, foreign investors came to India with big money, which is in part helping the country to propel to new heights. Now go a step further: Take the case of Goans who left Goa to work in the Arabian Gulf and other parts of the world (that includes me ofcourse). Why would they leave Goa to work elsewhere? Not because there are no jobs in Goa. There are plenty of jobs, but those jobs in Goa aren't paying enough to suit the lifestyles of these Goans!!! These Goans decided to emigrate, because their foreign earned currency could stretch a lot further back in Goa. Much of the foreign earned money, stashed in the banks in Goa, is re-cycled back into the economy by issuing loans to entrepreneurs in Goa/India. Furthermore, if one Indian Rupee was worth one US Dollar, nobody would buy anything from India - because it would be just too expensive to buy Indian goods and services, compared to the competition. Starved of exports and foreign capital, India would have been in perennial recession. Jim F. CAC Cansaulim were in virtual command of the match but found the well-organised defence of their opponents hard to beat. Raias keeper, Manuel George, was the hero as he produced a string of saves, especially in the second-half, to earn his side a valuable point. He was later voted man of the match. In the second match of the day, Dino Dias and Noel Fernandes were on target to give Vanxim Divar a 2-0 victory against ABC Benaulim. Russel Rodrigues of Vanxim Divar was named man of the match. Cansaulims early pressure could have earned them one or two goals through Remedios Rodrigues and C. Dias but both woefully failed to apply the finishing touch. Between Empires offers the first systematic analysis of the relationship between print culture and colonial rule in Goa. Rochelle Pinto discusses the development of print culture and its implications for larger questions of nationalism, modernity, and colonial politics. Drawing succinctly from available literature on print, reading publics, and linguistic hierarchies elsewhere in India, she offers a persuasive account of the possibilities opened by print media and the manner in which it reordered social, cultural, or political ties within Goan society. Through a careful reading of print produced in Portuguese, Konkani, and Marathi, this book examines the contesting claims about Goa and the terrain of its politics. It shows how this highly contested public realm was deeply reflected in the novels, pamphlets, and newspapers produced by the Catholic elite, Goan migrants to Bombay, and litigants in the rural districts in the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Presenting detailed studies of the emergence of various forms of print, the author discusses how questions of representation, genre, publicity, and literary history followed different trajectories among the non-elite and elite writers. Rich in scholarship and rigorous and wide-ranging in its argumentation, this work makes an important contribution to current discussions on the emergence of print spheres in colonial India. -- Frederick Noronha http://fn.goa-india.org Ph 0091-832-2409490 List of Indian e-lists http://wikiwikiweb.de/MailingListsInIndia

Dear Pravin: I think you do know the difference between a ghanti and a niz goenkaar ..dont waste my time with such frivolous questions..as regards your own status I am sorry I am not qualified to declare you as ghanti or someone else because i do not know you... regards B . Dear Pravin, . and the DIFFERENCE is just simply this: Ghati or Ghanti is a person who is DIFFERENT from US [whoever US may be] NIZ Goemkar is one who is superficially easy going and likeable ...like Chinmay, for example. If he has adjusted to our way of life, so much the better. The Chowgules are Niz Goemkars, the Chaugules are ghatis from Azra and Kolhapur. Shaikh Hassan is Niz Goemkar, Shaik Hussein is ghati Vishwanth Lawande is a Niz Goemkar [he almost always wore a suit] , Suresh Lawande is a ghati. Pravin Sabnis is a Niz Goenkar [he is also my friend. ...and I am a Gaunkar besides being a Niz Goemkar] but Atul Sabnis is a ghati. Ghati is the guy WE do not like. Don't not ask who are WE, even if we came to Goa just a few days before the bloody ghatis!! We learnt to wear shirt and pant and shoes first. We even eat sorpotel and vindaloo ...which the religion of these ghati muslims does not permit them to do. They are forever ghati, not WE. We change to survive. We are even NRI Goans and Mumbai-born Goans. These bloody ghatis are ghatis .. even if they are born and brought up in Goa. Mog asundi. You must tell me your definition of Niz Goenkar and a Ghanti. (Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org From: vinay natekar [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Goanet] (Goanet) No freedom of religion for Muslims in Goa? Ask any Goan Muslims who are co existing here for generations peacefully with other communities if anyone has prevented them from practicing their religion throughout their life. A stray incident in Curtorim/Chinchinim can not be set as an paradigm for above topic unless proven in depth the ground realities. The problem is precisely that there is a pattern, not only in Goa, but elsewhere as well. Whenever Muslims try to build a mosque or madrasa, they are greeted with suspicion and hostility, and attempts are made to block them. There are invariably 'objections' raised by various people. Even a legitimate demand for a kabrastan in Goa has yielded nothing. Apart from the incidents that I have mentioned, many others have also been recorded, see for example the 'Broken Peace' report on the Sanvordem violence, available at http://www.sacw.net/DC/CommunalismCollection/ArticlesArchive/brpeace.pdf It does not require anyone to tell that killing is inhuman in he name of relegion. The madrassas which are funded by Jehadis and ISI are finding to sprawl its wings in usually serene Goa. These madrassas are the breeding ground for terrorist in the name of imparting religious education they sow seeds of hatred towards other religions in the young minds. Of course all religions oppose killing -- and that includes Islam. But there are people who use religion for political ends -- like Osama bin Laden, Pravin Togadia, Narendra Modi, etc. Religion is only a cloak for their activities. These are not 'religious' people, they are the enemies of true religion. Here you have once again come out with the hoary equation 'Madrasa = Jehadis = ISI = terror'. It is this kind of thinking that causes the problem. There is no evidence for any of this. Which are these madrassas funded by Jehadis and ISI which are coming up in Goa? Be specific, a general statement like this is meaningless; without any evidence, it is just malicious rumour-mongering, and part of an attempt to deny basic rights to Muslims by creating a fear psychosis. It is important for perverted notions of secularism for majority community to learn. So long as Hindu politics were divided on caste and region secularism was ‘safe’. This is the stale and discredited 'psuedo-secularism' mantra chanted by the RSS and L.K. Advani. Standing up for minority rights is 'psuedo-secularism' according to such people. India is an overwhelmingly Hindu-majority country, and the religious rights of Hindus are rarely threatened. But the religious minorities face such problems on a regular basis, and secular persons naturally stand up for their rights. If that makes them 'psuedo-secular' in your view, it is your perspective that is at fault. Look at the data on communal violence in India. The overwhelming majority of those killed in such violence have been Muslims. Then again, look at what happens after such violence. Those who have been involved in killing Hindus are generally brought to book, whereas those involved in killing members of minority communities go off scot-free. Take the case of the Mumbai riots and the Mumbai blasts. The Mumbai blasts case has been concluded and those guilty have been punished. But what has happened to the Shrikrishna report, which identified those involved in the killing of Muslims? No action has been taken. Madhukar Sarpotdar, the Shiv Sena chappie who was caught red-handed by the army transporting arms, was,far from being punished, rewarded by being made a minister. It is in this assymetrical and unjust situation, where minority rights are trampled upon and justice denied, that secularists stand up for the rights of minorities. callous. [Goanet] Goanet Reader: We Are Mightier Than Death (By Ravindra Kelekar, translated by Augusto Pinto)
TRI Continental Film Festival - Dona Paula, Goa, Sep 28 - Oct 2, 2007 http://www.moviesgoa.org/tricontinental/tricon.htm For public viewing. Registration at The International Centre Goa. (Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org RECOGNITION FOR A PROMINENT WRITER: A HONOUR FOR RAVINDRA KELEKAR The Sahitya Akademi conferred its most prestigious award, the Fellowship, on Konkani writer Ravindra Kelekar earlier this year. That even the very greatest have had to suffer this fate -- that too I know but somehow I've always lived my life without ever feeling that I was going

FN -- First of all let me say I have the utmost respect for Mr Gadgil. Sitting here in the US I cannot vouch for the veracity or lack thereof of his article, but I do have the following questions and observations: a) The article is too amplified which gives one the impression that Goans (especially South Goans) collectively are an intolerant lot, which they are not. One paragraph states: The attempts to thwart the fundamental rights of Muslims have included cases where they have been denied the permission for a burial ground, those where they are prevented from praying in their own premises, and others where they are not allowed to build structures for religious education From what I recall reading, the purchase of that land for burial was itself in dispute. As for praying in their own premises is concerned, can we as Christians pray at anyone's house and then steadily or (stealthily) convert that house into a Church? Surely not! The same rules have to apply to Muslims. Makeshift premises for prayers cannot then be turned into permanent Masjids. As for the imparting of religious education, this should not be the concern of individual citizens but it should be the concern of the state machinery. In this day and age, should we be party to children being denied a secular education and in lieu be the beneficiaries of a religious education that is a great dis-service to them in life? Surely, this puts into action a self-perpetuating cycle of being disenfranchised by lack of education, opportunities, of being forced to live on the economic fringes of India and then finding themselves to be fertile ground for radicalisation. These are tough questions, but their answers cannot be the superficial appeasement of minorities, whoever they are. selma Moody friends. Drama queens. Your life? Nope! - their life, your story. [Goanet] Plea to the Mayor of Panjim
TRI Continental Film Festival - Dona Paula, Goa, Sep 28 - Oct 2, 2007 http://www.moviesgoa.org/tricontinental/tricon.htm For public viewing. Registration at The International Centre Goa. (Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org To Goanet - This morning I met the Mayor of Panjim, Shri Tony Rodrigues, and drew his attention to some of the problems the city currently faces on account of the ghati invasion. I handed a letter to him as as well to Elvis Gomes, the city Commissioner. The following five concerns were highlighted: 1) Ghati encroachment of city spaces footpaths, illegal hawking on pavements, setting up of paan stalls etc. These activities have spread to most of the city including Miramar. 2) The riverwalk has been turned into a public bathroom by the ghatis. Gangs of ghati men congregate and loiter from late evenings until into the night rendering the areas unsafe, especially for our women and children. [I have already written on this topic, how they seek to turn Goa into a heap of garbage just like it is back home whether in Karnataka, Bihar or UP] 3) Ghatis have now taken to assembling under bus stop shades at various points in Panjim from late evenings, using the benches there as a den for chatting, smoking, spitting etc. These are not ghati passengers awaiting the arrival of a bus. These are loiterers, and this nuisance has to stop immediately. I spoke to a Goan lady yesterday at a bus stop. She said she no longer feels safe at these shades with these ghati men milling around. 4) Bhelpuri stalls along the riverwalk have multiplied rapidly. They contribute in no small measure to the litter and trash. The handling and disposal of food are unhygienic. And equally crucial, these ghati-run stalls encourage congregations of fellow ghatis. 5) The tourist season will shortly get underway and busloads of Indian tourists will come, park their buses/cars, and use Miramar as an outdoor toilet. The CCP has to ensure that our city is no longer used as a trash bin by Indians (not particularly renowned for their civic comportment). The Mayor said he would look into it. The Commissioner was receptive when I spoke to him on the telephone. But an isolated letter here, a sporadic protest there, won't amount to much. A large number of Panjim residents must demand action from the Mayor and his administration for surely there are vested interests sheltering the ghatis. Likewise, villagers must question their Panchayats - ghati hawkers, squatters and encroachers are not a Panjim-only problem. The choice is stark. Either we live the civilized existence we have enjoyed for so long or we let the ghatis turn Panjim - our beautiful Panjim - into another sewer of an Indian city. Warm regards, r

[Goanet] Unreported World: Civil Rights Issuesin India's Caste System
TRI Continental Film Festival - Dona Paula, Goa, Sep 28 - Oct 2, 2007 http://www.moviesgoa.org/tricontinental/tricon.htm For public viewing. Registration at The International Centre Goa. (Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org The electronic Goan Voice (UK) edited by Eddie Fernandes is now read widely across the international Goan Diaspora. There is daily reportage and a summative weekly presentation relating to Goan people and events worldwide. One small section is titled Goanet Highlights. This provides a precis of selected items appearing on Goanet. Thus, the Goan Voice and Goanet liaise well progressively in the furtherance of issues of interest to Goans. Goanet readers, especially those from outside the UK, who may be interested in the Goan Voice (UK) should contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] Last week, the GV(UK) informed its readers in advance of (among others), a particular UK television programme (21/9/07) titled Unreported World: Civil Rights issues in India's Caste System. There have been many excellent TV programmes in the UK about the 60th anniversary of the independence of India and Pakistan but the one on the Unreported World was outstandingly good. Here are a few points raised in that programme: 1. There is massive ill-treatment of the 170 million Dalits in India by the upper castes. 2. Ill-treatment is varied in form from denial of most basic human rights, forced segregation, poor schooling, the feeding of whole families on rats, the worst jobs possible, physical attacks, banishment from homes and murder. Indeed, there were 24,000 murders of Dalits last year with virtually no prosecutions of the murderers even when there were witnesses. 3. There was widespread intimidation of the Dalits. On the programme, this was pictured as it happened with the upper castes threatening the Dalits if they spoke to the programme makers. 4. Many Dalits were forced to work in removing upper caste human excreta by hand even when this function is illegal in India. Alternative work was largely unavailable to them. 5. The Dalits were now becoming radicalised and determined to use the methods used in the anti-racist Civil Rights Movement in America of the 1950s to obtain their human rights through recourse to the law. They appeared to be confident that change would come about through such means reasonably soon. 6. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India, declared the caste situation in India as a blot on humanity. [Please note, not just India but humanity]. Commentary 7. There appears to be revolution in the making. It is likely to be a showcase situation with India simultaneously presenting itself as a civilised emerging economic superpower whilst the world keenly watches how India dismantles some of the most foul social practises on earth. If apartheid could be dismantled in South Africa and the blacks in America could win their civil rights, the time may be right for a concerted effort to dismantle the worst manifestations of casteism. Bear in mind that, across the world, all kinds of racism, from the old ones like anti-semitism, and casteism to the more modern ones like ethnic cleansing are no longer amenable to contemporary values of democracy, freedom, equality, and fairness. 8. While I have focused intensely on casteism among Catholic Goans on Goanet, I believe it is opportune to now ask our Hindu Goanetters about their attitudes to caste and casteism in today's globalised world. Their response would be much appreciated especially if the Dalit situation in India is interpreted differently by them. 9. So too, it is time the Catholic Church in Goa put its cards on the table and explained why it has avoided any criticism of casteism and casteists among members claiming to be Catholics. Periodic criticism of virtually everything else, but not casteism, from the Archbishop of Goa and his office can have no validity whatsoever in civilised society. It is high time (and with much evidence available), for the one billion plus Catholic community worldwide, to get to know about the accommodation and complicity with caste by the Catholic Church in Goa over the past 500 years. It is indeed fortunate you have a plan for the betterment of Goa, without any political ambitions, and certainly not wanting money or fame for what is your sacrifice toward others in your country. This is very noble of you and I wish you well in your ambition to do good for everyone, gaining nothing in return. You have sidelined a quite a few people who make up Goanet forum by pushing aside those who have been contributing much over the years, forgive me but I am just a new guy on the block as it were, but I can see you will not receive the support of those you have just pushed to one side to get near front of the queue. I hope pray that you find a better way to get to the top because you will the support of the majority to do anything in this world, let alone Goa where unfortunately differing forms of corruption is obvious at many levels, not only in parts of the local goverment but also in day to day dealings within politics where the MAJORITY of voters ARE interested in their daily bread coming to them, no matter how its gained. Your first point that you have NIL political ambitions has put you at the back of the queue already! You have to show you have affilitations to one or other party, maybe take in a coalition or similar. Goans are no different to the rest of the human race, everyone of Goan or other neighbouring State(s) origins look to WHO will give them the best deal (and there begins the corruption within without its too detailed to go into but I am sure you understand). My way would be to fight the corruption from within if you succeed you will be hailed as God-given to humanity. In all its ills, politics is dirty only because we are all too afraid to confront it. Just look at Zimbabwe their political leaders, it makes Goan politics look pure innocent. But that is because they have accepted ONE person as their leader her surrounded himself with a party HE runs with an iron fist. Dictatorships are on the way out but it will take a long time before it is totally eradicated, one-man parties leaders who profess to do good ALWAYS fall by the wayside, taking most of the country with them. You sound a sensible man with many good qualities, certainly not in it for money or fame as I said earlier but you will find that religion also has much to do with whether you succeed or not, if you believe in God as you say you do, you have to declare which God you believe in, the Muslim God or Catholic God, Hindu God or maybe you worship another God, but you say you believe in God, yet you say you dont mind others who are believers in a particular God, also the fanatics .. are welcome. Sorry but you need to put ALL your affiliations on the desk so that the VOTERS can decide WHO you are, WHY you are as you are but above all WHAT is it that you want? No-one will take you at face value, you need to be PROVEN first and this takes time. You are still young therefore you may well do good in other ways, but politically you will not get passed those you pushed aside twice. Once bitten, twice shy is the saying and its true in all forms! If you do not intend to hold any political post, then HOW will you go forward with the rest of your plan. The only other way to get Goa back on its feet is by industry, big industry. A large company that will do good such as a benefactor, but that is Charity! Goa does not need Charity, it need its charisma back serious minded politicians who WILL do better, its up to the voters to decide that the Indian Government who will step in to ensure no corruption at the polling station certainly no threats of violence from one team to another, and visa versa. The problem is world-wide when you MIX the two biggies, politics religion. Some affiliations between the two go hand-in-hand such as the extreme parties but such is politics. It's the majority of the population that needs convincing but when the largest percentage is also extreme in its views, you have a long fight on your hands. Good luck but remember that if you have no more vision of Goa other than giving it a helping hand, you WILL have a queue of people letting you get to the front of the queue but in return you will have to pay the

During my trip to India,i dont miss any oppurtunity to visit Goa besides my regular holidays to my hometown in GOA. What made be write this post is the two articles on goanet_SORROW LIES MY LAND AND START NEW REVOLUTION.I have been reading GOANET for years as it would give me some news about Goa.But, sadly as the time pased by, i found that it has been HIJACKED by few individuals who are intelligent and literate, for mudslinging and settling their own scores instead of contributing articles which would help GOA make a better place. My humble plea to all those indivisuals is to forget their personal differences, pride and ego and put up a united front, if they really care about GOA. After all i know that all of them are passionate about goa and want the same results but may differ on what means to adapt. I was very young when LIBERATION took place, but remember OPINION POLL, having carried DON PANNA- everywhere.Everybody then thought GOA would be heaven to live in.OVER the years i could hear my fathers generations which included HINDUS AND MUSLIMS that we were far better off in many respect during PORTUGUESE time and you still hear it in many places. What happened to goa after so called LIBERATION. First of all, DELHI BABUS ruled us as their slaves. Many of them came to Goa for one Big Holiday to Feather their own nests and look after their own kith and kins. They didnt care about goas development as they were deputionists and made hay whilst the sun shined and Goans were enjoying their so called FREEDOM. Next came the BANDODKAR ERA. He brought as many outsiders to rule goa who had least interest in goa for precisely the same reason as the DELHI BABUS. Then came STATEHHOD FOR GOA and we had ALL GOAN poltiticians who were behaving same as OUTSIDERS To BECOME RICH OVERNIGHT ANY COST.AND the stoty goes on. SO, whats the real issues threatening goa now. 1. Corruption. It is the singlemost issue threatening the very existence of goa.Delhi babus and CONGRESS should get the NOBLE PRIZE for introducing it in GOA..It is interlinked to power.COMMUNAL card had been greatly exacerbated during the last election and unfortunately, THE MEDIA, CHURCH AND LEADERS OF MOST NGOS LINKED TO GOA BACHAO ABHYAN WERE USED BY CONGRESS TO DIVERT THE ATTENTION FROM REAL ISSUES FACING GOA . 2. garbage. It is real menance. WHEN i was young, i did not know what MALARIA WAS. People are dying of this problem now. There is filth all over and many genuine tourists are thinking twice about visiting GOA. 3. Uncontolled immigration. Lot of immigrants to goa have contributed towards GOAS well being.THEY CAME AS VISITORS AND SETTLED IN GOA FOR ITS UNIQUE NATURE AND CULTURE. BUT, THE MASSIVE UNCONTROLLED INFLUX OF IMMIGRANTS IS PERPETUATED BY POLITICIANS FOR THEIR VOTE BANKS.THEY GET RATION CARDS, WATER SUPPLY, ELECTRICITY AND HOUSING ON FREE COMMUNIDADE LAND ON PRIORITY WHEN MOST GOANS ARE STRUGGLING.THEY HAVE OVERSTRETCHED OUR HEALTH FACILITIES, SCHOOLS AND OTHER INFRASTRUCTURES. CRIME, PROSTITUTION, DRUGS, DISEASES AND PEOPLE DEFAECATING ALL OVER GOA IS THE PRICE GOANS ARE PAYING FOR BEING GOOD HOSTS. IS there any hope for goa? yes.Goans have come a long way since Liberation in terms of education, knowledge, money and the rest.WE have to take controls of things ourselves. We know our problems better than any outsiders as our culture is unique. Also, we have enough resources and competent people in GOA to manage ourselves. There are thousands of GOANS WORLDWIDE with as many talents who are more than willing to help their motherland.THOSE WHO THINK THAT MOST NRIS COME AND ONLY ENJOY IN GOA AND DO NOTHING ELSE ARE MISLEADING OTHERS.DURING MY TRAVELS TO DIFFERENT PLACES, I HAVE MET PEOPLE WHO GENUINELY WANT TO HELP BUT ARE PUT OFF BY THE DIRTY POLITICS AND THE LACK OF INTEREST BY THE LOCAL POPULATION ITSELF. THE NEED OF THE HOUR IS-. COMBINE ALL THE FORCES, IRRESPECTIVE OF CASTE, CREED AND RELIGION.EVEN ALL NON-GOANS WHO ARE LONGTERM SETTLERS SHOULD JOIN HANDS FOR THEIR OWN INTEREST AS THEY HAVE MADE GOA THEIR HOME.FIRST, CHANGE THE POLITICS OF GREED AND CORRUPTION BY GETTING RID OF THEM ALL. FORM A NEW FRONT COMPRISING OF ALL PEOPLE WHO ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT WELLBEING OF GOA AND HAVE NO PERSONAL AGENDAS.DONT FORGET THE WORLDWIDE GOANS,COMBINED TOGETHER, THEY ARE A MJOR FORCE TO RECKON WITH AND CAN BRING IN THEIR WORLDWIDE EXPERTISE BESIDES FINANCIAL CLOUT. iT IS NEVER TOO

However, the key issue was not about Hindus in general, but Hindus from Goa migrating compared to the Catholics. A further slightly mischievous, but perhaps rhetorical question, is whether if they had indeed migrated in large numbers like the Catholics, would they have been integrated into the Diaspora we tend to take to be Goan? On another issue, I am strongly opposed to state funding for religious schools even though this happens in the UK and was further boosted by someone called Tony Blair---now thankfully out of the way and thus unable to do even more harm in UK politics. The resultant religious segregation in schooling cannot be good for the secular ethos and cohesion of a democratic society. Indeed, Homi Bhabha possibly has more kudos on this side of the pond than Spivak. Not withstanding her brilliant 1985 essay Can The Subaltern Speak? that received a certain degree of misplaced notoriety here are some of my speculative reasons for this paradox: 1. Spivak invariably writes in an impenetrable style rather like the recent French theorists that appeal to her. 2.On this side of the pond, there is in general, more acceptance (rightly or wrongly), of the grand seminal social theory narratives from the likes of Durkheim, Weber and Marx and the neo Marxists like Gramsci compared to some of the newer entrants with ideas in post-modern and post-colonial studies. 3. Perhaps, America's shorter existential rootedness and thus, historical/intellectual ideas of its own genesis, makes it more receptive to new ideas from outside. The thoughts of the 'outsider' but also American, Edward Said (of whom I am most impressed), taking root in America is perhaps an illustration of this and probably also provided the impetus for the American grounding of Spivak and others of her persuasion. 4. Rightly or wrongly, I think some post-colonial theory is slightly 'suspect' on this side of the pond. Many thanks for briefly injecting a welcome but unusual element into Goanet, even if possibly, it could bore the pants of many! I won't be saying more on this topic if I can help it. GoaNet isn't supposed to edit the material and distribute it to the list in piece meal. Either send out the entire response or don't distribute it at all. Anyway, I have reproduced it once again, along with the second para. Yes Cornel, you are absolutely right. I must say, it turned out to be a pretty good hedge. ... ... Jim F. New York.
[Goanet] CHURCHILL LOSING GRIP OVER SGF?
TRI Continental Film Festival - Dona Paula, Goa, Sep 28 - Oct 2, 2007 http://www.moviesgoa.org/tricontinental/tricon.htm For public viewing. Registration at The International Centre Goa. (Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org Churchill losing grip over SGF? BY HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, SEPT 23 Does Save Goa Front (SGF) supremo Churchill Alemaos writ no longer runs large in the three-month-old political party which he founded on the eve of the Assembly polls? His detractors within the SGF say Alemao indeed finds himself isolated on a host of issues, including his stand on Mopa, Congress ticket for his lawyer daughter and talks about the partys merger. Churchill, on the other hand, rubbishes claims by his detractors. Barring just two, all the members are solidly behind me. These two members are backed by the BJP and Luizinho Faleiro to create confusion in the party. I have maintained silence for the moment. I would soon call a meeting to prove who are with whom, Alemao asserted. Sources said SGF general secretary Dr Wilfred Mesquita and founder President Sidhanath Buyao have become the rallying force for many a SGF member to oppose Alemaos moves, especially his plan to field his daughter on the Congress ticket. In the game of one-upmanship, party MLA Reginaldo Lourenco has rallied behind the party leaders in opposing the move and also to retain partys identity. Many say Reginaldo has turned out a rallying force for the anti-Alemao group within the outfit to counter Alemaos moves. Sources say Reginaldo has an axe to grind against Alemao after getting a raw political deal from the party supremo. While Alemao has got the prized PWD portfolio and is now lobbying hard for a Congress ticket for his daughter Valanka, the Curtorim MLA is peeved over being cold shouldered by Alemao on his host of demands, including claim for a ministership. In fact, Reginaldo is believed to have sent a message to Churchill not to consider him as another former Curtorim MLA Anton Gaonkar. It is learnt that while Alemao is pushing for awarding a chairmanship for party treasurer Ganashyam Shirodkar a strong Alemao loyalist the move has come in for opposition from Reginaldo and others. Incidentally, sources said the Election Commission still treats Sidhanath Buyao as the SGF president as correspondence from the EC is sent in his name. Alemaos overt and covert lobbying for a Congress ticket for his daughter has earned him the ire of his party leaders. Can you imagine a party leader, considered supreme by the rank and file, lobbying hard to field his daughter on the Congress ticket? Presuming the Congress agrees for Alemaos demand, where will the SGF and other leaders stand in the political scheme of things, questioned an anti-Alemao leader. http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=1647cid=10 Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com

(Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org Dear Friends . In today's world we do not see Jesus in the life of the catholics at all. We pray into the darkness and cannot see light. While the senior citizens are left to themselves to fend for themselves the younger generation only wants to gather riches .They want the parents' money but not the parents. Look at the number of old people in the old aged homes. These very people once upon a time forgot themselves and sacrificed for their children without any claims. They did not have any dream of the future and never laid their future in the hands of their children but did their best to give their children a happy life. Many times while the children are having a gala time the parents have practically nothing. Once Pedro put his father in the home for the aged. The father did not protest. As Pedro was about to leave the home for the aged the superior came to the room. Pedro's father asked the superior. Sister what will be the cost of this room ? Sister superior was surprised at this question and asked Pedro's father as to why he was asking this question. Pedro's father said sister I want to buy this room for my son. Today he is young and has one son and one daughter who are small but tomorrow these childen might not have enough money to pay for the father's stay at the home and you may not have place for my son. I love my son and before I die I want to see that my son Pedro has a place in this home at least. Pedro was stunned. He did not know what to say. He knew that he too will reach this place one day. Yes his son may not be able to pay for his stay at the home. what will he do then ? He decided to keep the father with him and love him till his end. Aiz maka falea tuka .Why are we so rude to our parents ? Imagine a mother begging with her sons who are come from the gulf ? Baba maka kitem- ie tori dhi re puta. mhoje lagim kaim naim. Tuka chau ditelim aslim punn dhud nam, chavcho pallo nam, sakor nam. Can you bear to hear these words ? It will really tear your heart into pieces. I would never have allowed my mother to beg like that. Old people eat very little but they like to talk lot. Their heart is very big and it is full of love. Though fragile they have endless energy within them and want to do something for their kin. that is love.albert _ Download the latest version of Windows Live Messenger NOW! http://get.live.com/en-ie/messenger/overview

[Goanet] Plea to the Mayor of Panjim
TRI Continental Film Festival - Dona Paula, Goa, Sep 28 - Oct 2, 2007 http://www.moviesgoa.org/tricontinental/tricon.htm For public viewing. Registration at The International Centre Goa. (Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org Dear Rajan, That was a positive step you took: Making the authorities aware of the problem and demanding that they set it right. That is the raison d'etre of the local self government bodies like the Panchayats and Municipalities. They must be made to perform. The devolution of powers and responsibilities to the Panchayati Raj Institutions is the subject matter of the Constitution of India [73 and 74 amendments]. No law or rule or circular stands legal scrutiny if it is ultra vires of the Constitution. Yet, Goa has been lagging behind in giving powers to the PRIs. Even to this day, the CCP does not have full control over Panaji. Its main garden is with GSIDC, the promenade is with ESG, some of the roads are with PWD and its street lights are with Electricity Dept. What exactly it governs, I doubt even the CCP knows for sure. These ambiguities can be removed by citizens actions like the one you propose. Power to your hands. May your tribe increase. It is not just ghatis and the like who need to be corrected. The builders who dump debris on the roadsides in the dead of the night, the contractors who do not make good the site on completion of their works, the architect who designed the gutter around the Azad Maidan that does not drain out at all [it is lower than the gutter in to which it is supposed to flow now. When built, it was not connected to any outlet.] The owners of all the cars that create a traffic jam outside Sharada Mandir twice a day, six days a week, are not much more civilised than the ghatis. Neither are those who fling plastic bags containing flower garlands into the river from their posh cars or public buses. One law for all. Mog asundi. Miguel Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2007 07:58:34 -0400 From: Rajan P. Parrikar [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Goanet] Plea to the Mayor of Panjim This morning I met the Mayor of Panjim, Shri Tony Rodrigues, and drew his attention to some of the problems the city currently faces on account of the ghati invasion. I handed a letter to him as as well to Elvis Gomes, the city Commissioner. The following five concerns were highlighted: 1) Ghati encroachment of city spaces footpaths, illegal hawking on pavements, setting up of paan stalls etc. 2) The riverwalk has been turned into a public bathroom by the ghatis. 3) Ghatis have now taken to assembling under bus stop shades at various points in Panjim from late evenings, using the benches there as a den for chatting, smoking, spitting etc. 4) Bhelpuri stalls along the riverwalk have multiplied rapidly. They contribute in no small measure to the litter and trash. 5) The tourist season will shortly get underway and busloads of Indian tourists will come, park their buses/cars, and use Miramar as an outdoor toilet. (Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org Asian Junior Champion WIM Mary Ann Gomes (ELO 2274) was upset by Commonwealth Girls Under 18 Champion Bhakti Kulkarni (ELO 2112) in the fourth round of the National Junior Girls Championship being conducted at Nagpur, Maharashtra. Bhakti, who is also the three time Goa state Seniors Champion, had beaten Mary Ann in the Commonwealth Championships in Mumbai last year. She proved that the victory was no fluke when she convincingly beat the Woman International Master for the second time in their two meetings. Opening with her pet Colle System, she gradually built up an advantage and even sacrificed an exchange to develop a crushing attack. When faced with queening pawns, the World Under 18 Bronze Medallist Mary Ann had no option but to resign. Mary Ann, who is also a Woman Grandmaster Norm holder, is coming back to chess after a long layoff, and perhaps was a tad rusty in this particular encounter. Also losing in the 4th round is WIM Kiran Manisha Mohanty (ELO 2247) of Orissa. Kiran, who lost to Ch. Divyasri (ELO 2063) in the third round, suffered another setback when R. Preethi (ELO 2109) of Tamil Nadu beat her convincingly. Mohanty is the current National Women's 'B' Champion and will have to score heavily in the last seven rounds to have any chance of finishing in the medals list. Bhakti next plays WIM P. Lakshmi Sahiti (ELO 2142) who is the two time and current National Subjunior Girls Champion. If she can make it to the top 6 in this tournament, Bhakti will be part of the National Junior team which will play in prestigious international tournaments next year. Her coach Dronacharya awardee Raghunandan Gokhale is in daily contact with her from Mumbai and is guiding her in opening selection and game strategies. SOURCE: Sameer Salgaocar - President, GSCA
