[Goanet] Aleixo, Kavlekar, Luizinho involved in SEZ land scam, alleges Churchill
Aleixo, Kavlekar, Luizinho involved in SEZ land scam, alleges Churchill NT News Service Margao, Oct 24 Terming special economic zones as a major scam in the making, the Save Goa Front president and PWD Minister, Mr Churchill Alemao today alleged that three persons the Power Minister, Mr Aleixo Sequeira, the Quepem MLA and GIDC Chairman, Mr Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar and former Navelim MLA, Mr Luizinho Faleiro -- were involved in the SEZ land scam. Mr Alemao said he was not in favour of SEZ projects that would threaten the identity of Goa and Goans. I have opposed SEZs from the beginning and demand that the project should be scrapped forthwith, he said. Giving the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat a pat on his back for deciding to review the SEZs in the state, the SGF president opined that SEZs should be immediately done away with. Taking a similar stand on the proposed food park at Quitol, Balli, he said the food park should also go. The PWD Minister argued that land in Goa was a scarce commodity. Land in Goa will not increase but population will, he explained and added that with the advent of SEZs there will be influx of migrants in the state, which will invariably put pressure on the infrastructure. In yet another flip-flop, Mr Alemao said that Goa can do with only one airport in Dabolim. Vouching for the Dabolim airport, he said Mopa airport project should be scrapped once for all. He said physically and economically another airport was not feasible in Goa and quoted the Montreal-based consultant report to confirm his stand. The Montreal-based International Civil Aviation Organisation on Tuesday reported that two airports were not financially viable for the state. The PWD Minister observed that since Dabolim was centrally located, the government should drop plans on the Mopa airport and vigorously pursue on upgrading the infrastructure at Dabolim. He said there was no problem if the airport came up at Sindhudurg. Land in Mopa can be used for some other constructive purpose, he added. He sought to remind that last time he had spoken to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, who had agreed to provide financial support to upgrade the Dabolim airport. I even wrote to Defence Minister, Mr A K Anthony to shift the navy training base to Karwar, near the Sea Bird project, Mr Alemao disclosed. Still sulking over the South Goa parliamentary by-poll ticket issue, Mr Alemao promised to support the Congress candidate, Mr Francisco Sardinha but refused to publicly share the dais with the Congress candidate. Central leaders have requested me to attend at least one public meeting with Mr Sardinha, he disclosed and added that he will decide on that only after talking to his workers. He also disclosed that the state government was providing Rs 10,000 crore to the Centre by way of mining cess. In return the Centre was allotting a measly Rs 300 crore to the state, he added. Mr Alemao said he will place a proposal in the next state cabinet meeting to request the Centre to provide 50 per cent of the mining cess share to Goa, as was being done in other states like Bihar. http://www.navhindtimes.com/articles.php?Story_ID=102512 Sanny de Quepem [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com
[Goanet] Goemchem KOLVONTH???
Diana Pinto - Herald Oct. 25, 2007 [editorial] What an insult CM?? It is insulting to Goans that Chief Minister Digamber Kamat and Francisco Sardinha expect us to be satisfied with their assurance that the Government will not supply water to SEZs. coming up in the state. So then, are the SEZ developers going to import water from the rest of the country or maybe even abroad? The Government makes lopsided policies and the locals are compelled to pay a heavy price. If the Chief Minister is willing, I will be happy to personally escort him around the Verna Industrial Estate, where almost every industry has sunk borewells indiscriminately because the Government had promised a quantity of water that it could not supply. As a consequence, the ground water table in the surrounding villages has been seriously depleted. Even today, in the proposed SEZ in Verna, the developers are certainly not depending on the Government's erratic and undependable water supply but have already started sucking the ground water through borewells and the locals can brace themselves for a future of long, hard, dry days. Rules and laws are made to be followed by the 'aam aadmi'. But the GIDC Board apparently, is above all rules and all laws as can be seen from the manner in which the Board has allotted huge tracts of our precious land for SEZs in Verna. When elected Governments who are supposed to function as custodians of our collective assets are the ones who are responsible for selling it off, then they compel the people to come out and assert their will. In the case of RO 2011 and SEZs, where huge tracts of land are being handed over on a silver platter to private developers, it is a matter of shame for the Government of the day. The Chief Minister has brazenly assured the people that SEZs have been put into cold storage, even as work is proceeding at a frenetic pace at the Verna SEZs. Either in his administration 'the right hand does not know what the left hand does' or it is a deliberate attempt at hoodwinking the people now that the Parliamentary elections are upon us. And the CM certainly cannot be serious when he says that the state government cannot go against the permissions given by the Centre for SEZs in Goa. This is a life changing policy for Goans, affecting their demography, environment, infrastructure and even identity. Does the CM need to be reminded that he has been elected to look after the interests of Goans and not serve as a puppet of the Centre? If necessary, he has to fight against any policy thrust upon Goa by the Centre which goes against the interests of the people he has promised to serve. Lambert Mascarenhas - GT- Oct. 25, 2007 Inauguration Spree? WHY should or must the Chief Minister Digamber Kamat opt to accept invitations to inaugurate some trivial association or be chief guest at some inconsequential functions da in and day out when he is expected, as head of the government, to concentrate on the affairs of the state? Is this his 'aam aadmi' concept of good governance? In no democratic government of the world is the Chief Minister, or even the other ministers, are seen wasting their time in such useless performancies over which I think, the Goa media is highly responsible in high-lighting. As a retired journalist, I also feel that the media in Goa is lionising Churchill Alemao, who is surviving in Goan politics on bombast, and does not realise his limitations. COMMENTS: We Goans had the pleasure of enjoying one of the fabulous tiatrs of old named THE PORTUGUEZ KOLVONTH Today Goans have the pleasure of seeing the 'GOAN KOLVONTH' on display in Goa's political show. What did Diana Pinto and Lambert Mascarenhas expect? 'nach gho Kolvontha nach' - 'Gagro fuloun nach' floriano goasuraj -- GOA needs a 'REVOLUTION' if it is to see better days. [Goanet] 22 injured in chemical leak at scrapyard
22 injured in chemical leak at scrapyard HERALD CORRESPONDENT MAPUSA, OCT 24 Twenty-two persons, including two infants and two children, were injured when they came in contact with a hazardous chemical at a scrap yard at Karaswada, here on Tuesday afternoon. Five of them are reported to be in a serious condition. According to police reports, a truck collected about 70 barrels from a factory at Dhargal and offloaded them at the scrapyard, owned by one Yasr Mohammed on Tuesday. At about 1 pm, the 18 labourers began cutting the barrels, when they noticed obnoxious fumes being released from the barrels and began to feel some burning sensation. The labourers, however, continued their work after lunch without realizing that they were dealing with a hazardous chemical. By evening, the labourers and the children at the site struggled for breath and the burning sensation spread all over their bodies. The labourers along with the children were rushed to a private hospital. Police went to the scrapyard and found the disassembled barrels of Dymethyl Sulphate lying in the scraypard. The barrels contained labels, stating that the contents in the barrels were hazardous chemicals. http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=3312cid=10 Sanny de Quepem [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com

[Goanet] Pro League to begin on Nov. 24
Pro League to begin on Nov. 24 The Telegraph: Thursday, October 25, 2007 OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT New Delhi: Defending champions Dempo Sports Club and newly-promoted side Salgaocar will kick-off the Professional League on November 24, at Nehru Stadium in Goa. Both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal will start their campaign at home. While Mohun Bagan will take on JCT on November 25, East Bengal will play Viva Kerala the next day. AIFF sources said the inaugural matches of the erstwhile National Football League (NFL) had always been played in either Calcutta or Delhi; this time, for a change, it was decided to kick off the tournament in Goa. Moreover, the AIFF president, Priya Ranjan Das Munshi, will be in Goa during that period because of film festival, sources said. It would be easier for him to attend the inaugural match in Goa. The Pro League, the launch of which has already been delayed because of change of dates in the World Cup qualifiers, is likely to run uninterrupted till February 2008 before a break. With the AFC Challenge Cup scheduled in Chinese Taipei from March 1-16, the Pro League will be halted temporarily to accommodate the national camp. National coach Bob Houghton has attached huge importance to the AFC Challenge Cup, specially meant for the middle and lower ranked Asian teams. The champions will automatically make the final round of the 2011 Asian championships. Houghton is believed to have asked the federation to hold the national camp for AFC Challenge Cup for at least a fortnight. It means the Pro League will effectively remain close for nearly a month. There could be further interruptions for the AFC Club championships as East Bengal and Dempo SC have qualified for the meet. The AIFF will make a formal announcement about the Pro League only after the India-Lebanon World Cup qualifier in Chennai on October 28. http://inwww.rediff.com/newshound/ga.html Sanny de Quepem [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com

[Goanet] Zita Falcao: school founder with a sense of commitment
Zita Falcao: school founder with a sense of commitment BY DR JOSE DE SOUZA A month of remembrances and recollections is rolling down in the fast moving wheel of time over the passing away of Maria Zita Pereira Vas Falcao, the founder of St. Anne School in Borda, Margao. It was on her return from East Africa, armed with her Kenyan K.G. School Training, with unfaulting support of her husband late Antonio Vas Palcao, tha Zita founded St. Anne School in 1970. From a modest beginning with 20 tiny tots, in a small rented house, a school van and she herself being the only teacher, today the school is housed in its own building, with about 3000 students, spread oyer units in surroundings, a fleet of school buses and with nearly hundred teachers and staff members. In 1995, on the grand occasion of the school silver jubilee, Zita had openly acknowledged in the jubilee brochures It gives me immense pleasure and a sense of fulfillment to participate in the silver jubilee celebration of the school which I founded in 1970. Earlier, in the year of foundation of the school in 1970, in the magazine Flame (The Voice of Teachers) in an article About a nursery teacher she had written: A great man once said that the secret of education lies in respecting the pupil... To these little ones a nursery teacher must be a mother, a nursemaid, a teacher and a protector all rolled in one... There is a word of wealth in the trusting smile of a child. Last July, on the occasion of her 85th birth anniversary, the teachers, staff members and the students paid an honour to her in the following poem Our Founderon the school board: Z - Zealous and zestful I - Imaginative and impressive , T - Talented and tolerant A - Ambitious and abiding F - Friendly and fashionableA - Administrative and accomplished L - Liberal and loving C - Cool and calm. A - Admirable and accurate 0 - Optimistic and outstanding . Thirty seven years full of accomplishments have rolled since the foundation of the establishment by this ambassador of education in South Goa and her school stands today tall, great and famous. http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=3227cid=26 Sanny de Quepem [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com
[Goanet] IAR comes to the aid of injured cows in Goa
October 2007 IAR comes to the aid of injured cows in Goa Regular visitors to the IAR website may recall our story from October 2006 about a bull in the town of Candolim in North Goa. The bull had been injured when local residents had thrown what appeared to be boiling oil over its back to get it off their property. Recently similar cases have presented themselves, this time in the town of Bicholim, also in North Goa. Local workers at an industrial estate have injured several cows and bulls by throwing acid on them, presumably because the animals were in the wrong place, at the wrong time. IAR Goa attended two calls on 16th and 18th October where individuals had reported cows in distress. Upon attending the first call it quickly became clear to the drivers and the vet that the cow could not be treated on site. Despite having an owner (the IAR shelter in Goa normally only admits stray animals) the cow was admitted at the shelter in Assagao for immediate treatment. If treatment is not given urgently the wounds caused by the acid burning away the skin become infested with maggots and once such an infection takes hold it becomes an extremely difficult task to get the wounds to heal. Vets attended to the cow immediately and although it will take time, the animal is now on the road to recovery. Unfortunately, the other cow which was picked up on 18th October did not have such a lucky escape. Judging by her condition it is thought that she had been attacked with the acid at the same time as the first one. She however had sustained even more severe wounds and had been wandering around for 2 days without treatment. Her entire back and hip area was an open wound and already flies and maggots were eating away at the raw flesh. Upon examining the cow the vets had to make the merciful decision of peacefully putting the cow to sleep. Sadly these two cases are but two of many. It is not uncommon for boiling water, oil or acid to be used to scare away cattle. Due to the nature of the lives of these animals in India - as sacred animals they walk around freely on the roads and in the fields - it becomes difficult to control and confine them. Although local authorities have set up so-called cattle pounds in an attempt to store unclaimed cattle out of the way of local residents, there simply are not enough resources to catch and transport the cattle to these pounds. The two incidences above were both reported by local residents to the police as well as to IAR, but as yet the culprits have not been found since no one is willing to admit to knowing who may lie behind this immense cruelty to these poor animals. http://www.iar.org.uk/news/2007/oct07-6.shtml Sanny de Quepem [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com

Re: [Goanet] Goa bishop to Sao Francisco - a request, a demand to keep silent............
So why are we on this forum if not to comment upon society, with good grace or ill-will, this forum is made up of Goan, non-Goans and those who have an interest in all things Goan. This includes talking about religion, its priests temples, churches, mosques and so on. To simply allow things to go unabaited, to not discuss or put straight, on the record or off it, is to allow things to go from one extreme to another. This is not about the Catholic Church, whether or not Albert is part of the cause or the solution, we all have our own private and personal ideas of what is right and wrong. To discuss it in detail brings out the best, (and worst) in all of us. Discussions Debates is the raison d'etre of this forum, lets keep it that way. If anyone feels they do not wish to take part, then fine, dont take part. If you feel so strongly about a subject, then by all means put forward a view. To keep silent is to associate oneself to the negative .. let not go there! How do we develop wisdom? Surely the elders and those with experience will impart this, by actions. Talking, writing and corresponding is one way, by example is another. John Monteiro Berkshire, England. - The topic about Bishop going to Sao Francisco has been blown out of proportion... I do not wish to comment further... May I request the Goan net members to stop throwing dust at each other.. the affairs of the church is concerned the less we talk better it is, for our own health and peace of mind keep praying to our clergy that they may be ruled by Divine hand..Accusing the bishop or the clergy on one side and abusing Albert on the other side will not make us grow rich in mind or wisdom. Paul Mascarenhas ---
Re: [Goanet] archbishops visit - Albert The Church Collection Plate
I agree, this is a true fact. An open and honest discussion on what is and what is not correct should be discussed on this forum. The subject was raised by a Catholic who constantly critises his own religious leaders blames all of societies ills either upon the religious leaders or the current generation. The subject was brought up, it was discussed we have all reached various conclusions, albeit not in the same way as all Catholics would have hoped. But is was discussed, and we know darn well the Bishop of Goa had good reason to go abroad, but what of it? Why was this brought up in the first place? It IS none of our business, it is the business of the good offices of the Bishop of Goa. But as we speak / write, there are dozens of perplexed Goanetters who wonder why we are discussing it, we should shut up and say no more. I agree, no more. But I dont think we can simply say nothing when one Goanetter brings up the subject in a negative way, accusing the Bishop of Goa of being a big spender taking the money from donations. This is a negative and false accusation and this Goanetter ought to make a public apology on this forum to the Bishop of Goa and his office. It is everyone's right to comment on this forum, but with rights come responsibilities. John Monteiro Berkshire, England nelson ferrao [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: the Hindus and Muslims must be having a good lough at us. Have you ever heard them crtisizing their spiritual leaders or asking them what they do with their donations? Archbishop is the head of Catholic church and he has followers. By attaching him, you are insulting all his flock.there are some people on goanet who like to just talk and criticise for the sake of it and generate unnecessary controversies. These people should look at their own lives first. If they have any personal scores to settle, they should do it in a civilised way.Religion is a very sensitive and personal issue which should be handles with care.

Re: [Goanet] Goa bishop in San Francisco - A reply to Joaquim Pereira
Thank you Fr. Pereira for clearing the gossipy air from the bolcao of Albert. I think someone from the US needs to sponsor Albert and send him a ticket. That's the real issue. The mentality is 'If I don't get a chance to go to San Fran. why should another person go? Good old goan crab mentality. Secondly, regarding Roland's reply to Fr. Pereira's apt email and then an emotional out cry on Caste System in the Church. Roland makes it appear that Caste System is like a aeroplane owned by the church, piloted by the priest and the brahmins ride in the first class, and the rest of us are stuck in the coach class with one toilet. Well, as per my knowlegde that comes from studying History, Sociology, Religions and Anthropology I know that Caste System is a much bigger beast and reality, dates back to Before Christ and primarily has it's roots in Hinduism. It started out well as a way of division of labour or roles in society but later the Brahmins - priestly and teaching class used it as a way to exert authority over the rest. They claimed that they came from the head of Brahma(God), while the Shatriyas(warrior class) came from the shoulders of Brahma, the Vaishays(trading class) came from the belly of Brahma and the Sudras(manual labour) came from the feet of Brahma. This description was given by the Brahmins for obvious reasons. I donot know what caste i belong to because I never spoke about it with my family or friends but I know for sure I don't belong to brahmin Caste. Now my parents were never deprived of any educational or working opportunities. In fact it was the Church that was there for them when they needed help. I don't think Fr. Pereira needs to address this issue because the ball can never be in Altinho or for that matter Rome. It's all over the place including in mine and your heart. Whenever we refer to people as Sokoile(southerners) and Voile(Northerners) there is the prejudice of caste system. Whenever we are anxious that our daughter may fall in love with a non-goan or a goan of a poor background or locality or schedule caste there is caste system. The church used to recruite candidates for the priesthood from mainly the brahmins but that practice died 3 or 4 generations ago. I think we need to move on and stop playing the blame game and work to fight the bigger elephants and tigers in our Global world and ask questions like – Why do our Goans have to leave Goa and struggle in a foreign land? Are we providing them opportunities to earn their bread and butter, fish and curry in Goa? What are we doing about corruption? What we doing about the sale of our land in Goa in the name of development? Sale of our land by our greedy politicians as if it's their father property. What are we doing about pollution? What are we doing about our educational system? What are we doing about our inadequate and depleting infrastructure? What are we doing about further degradation of our environment especially our beaches and rain forests? For Roland in Canada these may not be issues that affect his life? And Albert in Goa, now you will realize why he wants to go on a vacation to San Francisco. Let's talk about issues that are touching our daily lives, why goans want to leave goa? Why Roland does not want to go back to goa? Why Albert want's to take the first flight out? Fr. Pereira does not have to waste his time on issues that need to be laid to rest with history and should be busy tackling the burning issues of today. I'm of the opinion that the Archbishop needs to travel. He needs to know what’s happening around the world not just from newspapers and televisions. It is good for his leadership. He will be a better leader. He has a very important role in Goa, not just in the spiritual domain but in every aspect of people’s life. I know he works very hard and holds very, very important responsibilities and I thank him for his dedication. He has spoken on issues that no one dare speak in Goa and he has my respect. So, let bygones be bygones, Roland I would suggest you to come to goa and get in touch with some of our burning issues and ground realities that affect us today rather then seek to heal old wounds which are irrelevant today because that will not bring food to our table. Thanks, Agnelo

Arvalem Water-Falls and 6th Century Caves http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=236830357size=l click on pic/link above for larger view (Mayem lake also seen) Well, recently, we decided to go there (waterfalls) locally known as 'Dhobdhobo' and not dhogdhogo as said earlier, We took public transport this time as we were more than 4. We too KTC buss at Panjim 11.45pm to Valpoi via Ribandar, Oldgoa, Banastarim, Marcel, Amona bridge (see pic/link below), Navelim, Sanklim, Arvalem...Valpoi. http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=234650130size=l Clik on pic/link above for bigger view It took about one hour to reach there and the fare is Rs.15 per head. Once you get down there, it only takes about 5 minutes walk to the waterfalls. However, if one gets off a stop before it, it may take about 15 minutes but on the way you will also get a chance to see the 6th century ancient caves (see pics video here) Alternately, one can take this road to Caves/waterfalls and coming back one can take the other shortcut road. Close to the waterfalls there is a beautiful temple too (see pic abv) Besides, one can see arecanut plantations etc Passing through the Sanklli bazaar, I smell fried fish. I said, whatever it is (I mean big or small restaurant) will go for it. And we found not so decent restaurant where they serve in Thali. Four of us ordered 4 fish curry rice plates(with rice, two pieces of friend Bangda, some veg, Fish curry, Pickle and 'solakodi'). We also ordered chilled 7up bottles one each @7. (it was not a bar restaurant). With no extra rice, but one extra fish portion (that's me, @Rs.5) can any one guess the bill for all 4 of us? It was unbelievable!! Less than Rs.100. (Rs.93 exactly). I asked whether the soft drink was included, he said yes. Then again reconfirmed at the counter. That means the rice plate is for Rs.15 only? At Panjim and other places, fish curry rice plates starts from Rs.30 Plenty buses to Sanklim from the main road Arvalem (fare Rs.4) from where one can take return bus to Panjim. We took pvt. bus via Bicholim-Mapusa-Panjim time taken 1.5 hours fare is the same Rs.15. A return taxi would cost Rs.1000 atleast plus waiting charges etc. but for 4 people, to fro public transport will cost Rs.136 only i.e. 4x30 + 4x4. [Goanet] NEWS: Two reports... real estate goes beyond reach ... sea-level rise along Indian coast
http://www.deccanherald.com/Content/Oct242007/national2007102432059.asp Deccan Herald National Detailed Story Goa out of reach to Goans, say builders From Devika Sequeira, DH News Service, Panaji: [EMAIL PROTECTED] If you are in the middle income bracket and living in Goa, chances are you will not be able to afford a reasonable two-bedroom apartment in any of the towns or the tourist coast. The May 2005 freeze on Goa's Regional Plan 2011 and the frenetic speculation by Delhi-based property brokers has pushed land costs to all-time highs in Goa. Real estate prices have gone up between 33 per cent to 50 per cent in less than 18 months, said Datta Naik, president Goa Chamber of Housing Industry (GCHI). Take for instance the 200 square metre sea-front apartment which the local builder Dinar Tarcar was selling in Dona Paula for Rs 35 lakh two years ago. The flat is now worth Rs 2 crore. The appreciation is both unbelievable and absurd, but the fact is I cannot afford to buy a flat in my own building, Tarcar said. Even a regular 100 square metre flat in the suburbs around Panjim costs over Rs 35 lakh today, say builders. Though prices around Margao, south Goa are marginally lower at Rs 20,000 per square metre built-up, this represents an appreciation of 33 per cent from prices that prevailed last year, Naik said. Closer to the coast, land prices have scaled even higher peaks as more and more North Indian speculators and big realtors are muscling in into the hotel industry in Goa. The problem is that Goa is a small state which has been turned into a big brand, and everyone from rich businessmen to NRIs want to own property here. Throw a stone anywhere in Goa and it's bound to hit a broker these days, said Naik. The freeze on the Regional Plan, the frenzied buying and the scarcity of land in the market has put housing beyond the reach of the local population. Goans can no longer afford to buy property in their own state, and unless the government puts a cap on buying by outsiders there will be serious issues over the changing demographic composition, Tarcar said. The GCHI wants the state government to create land estates on the lines of the industrial ones, to provide affordable housing to locals and those living here for a minimum 15 years. * * * * * Sea level rise along India coast is a reality, scientists say From Pamela D'Mello [EMAIL PROTECTED] Panaji, Oct 22: Mean sea level rise along the north Indian ocean coasts has rise at an average of 1.30 mm per year, slightly less than a global average of 1.7 mm per year, says national institute of oceanography scientist and IPCC team member A S Unnikrishnan. Dr Unnikrishnan's study published in Global Planet Change this year, quantifies an average rise for the region, using tide gauge data from several Indian ports, including Mumbai port's longest 113 years data. The relatively recent presence of tide gauges (most under forty years old) in the Indian ocean regions made if difficult for scientists to calculate mean sea level rise in the area. Data for the region is therefore not included in calcualtions for the global average. The same holds true for other southern hemisphere countries as well, says Dr Unnikrishnan. His joint study this year has however concluded that the regional rise was consistent with global average rise. There is incontrovertible evidence, he told a media workshop on rising seas -- that mean sea level has been rising along with global atmospheric temerperatures. As the atmosphere heats, oceans warm and expand, and this with glacier melts, cause a rise in mean sea levels, he stated. While the nature of India's west coast, especially along Karnataka, made it less vulnerable, mean sea rise at Diamond Harbour, West Bengal was calculated at 5.74 mm per year. This above average rise is due to its location on the Ganges delta where land is subsiding at upto 4 mm per year, he said. Kandla port and the Gujarat coast also showed higher than average mean sea level rise. Though global mean sea level rise averages out to a 17 cm rise in a hundred years, Dr Unnikrishnan pointed out that scientific models forecast a speedier rate of rise if green house gas emissions increase. Reversing any changes though would take hundreds of years, as seas are sluggish and don't easily change. In February 2007, IPCC fouth assesment report linked rising global mean sea level to human induced climate change. Scientists and environmentalists at the workshop though were appalled at attempts by policy makers to amend coastal regulation zoning laws to open coastlines to building activity. Aleady far too many cities and human settlements located too close to the seas were creating potential human disasters out of otherwise normal natural phenomena, said Dr Antonio Mascarenhas. Re: [Goanet] Paan, Piss, Panji
From: Rajan P. Parrikar [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Goanet] Paan, Piss, Panji The first sight in Panjim during my drive home from the Dabolim airport last evening was that of two tourist buses offloading products of their metabolism on the Miramar beach, near Sharda Mandir. We get information about the return of certain people to Goa by the arrival of a fresh load of ordure in our inboxes. It's not just the prejudice and bigotry that is on display -- in fact, by now I have developed a certain admiration about the way these attributes are proudly and shamelessly flaunted, as a kind of badge of honour, to an extent that even Bal Thackeray is yet to match. Admire me, I'm more bigoted and abusive than anybody else, seems to be the mantra here. Truly, nirlajjam sada sukhi! They say in a pithy proverb in Marathi (which happens to be the mother tongue of this particular ghati), 'Hagnara tari lajto nahi tar baghnara tari lajto' (if the defecator isn't embarrassed, the watcher is). Well, in the role of 'baghnara', the person who writes these posts seems to be unfazed and, leave alone feeling embarrassed, is perpetually heading out in search of more 'hagnaras'. Verily, seek and ye shall find -- in unlimited quantities, at every turn, all the time. You'll even find yourself dreaming about it if you persist... The posts themselves are repellent and abusive loads of crap about, predictably, shit! But I, as a 'baghnara' in this case, am by now acutely embarrassed at this outpouring of effluvium and am in future just going to be pressing the delete button when such mails appear. In any case, this particular psychological problem seems to be so deep-rooted that it is more deserving of pity than censure, and bothering to respond is just a waste of time. But here are some links that may cast some light on the problem and maybe help to alleviate it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anal_fixation -- Question everything -- Karl Marx
[Goanet] Locals stage anti-mining rally in Bicholim
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM OCT 24: About 200 villagers from Vathadev Bicholim including the workers from the cosme Pharma Ltd today organised a rally in protest against the proposed mining in the village. It may be stated that a mining company has been given the sanction to start mining activities at Vathadev inspite of opposition from the locals. As of now several morchas, demonstrations have been carried out by the villagers in protest against the same. The panchayat through a special meeting had strongly disapproved any plans to start mining activities which would harm the Bicholim river. Today as a part of the protest the villagers and the workers of the cosme Pharma Ltd carried out the rally which began at about 10 am from the village and culminated at Shivaji Maharaj Maidan at Bicholim. In the rally men, women and children participated in large number. The workers of the Cosme Pharma Ltd, a company which is likely to be affected due to mining activities, also protested the move of the mine owners. After reaching the Shivaji Maidan the meeting was addressed by the labour leader, Chiristopher Fonseca. Addressing the gathering Fonseca extended the full support of the workers' union for the cause of the villagers and the pharma workers. We fully support the workers of the cosme pharma and this is only the beginning of our agitation Fonseca warned adding the pharma company should make their stand clear in the matter or face severe consequences. He also demanded with the state government to cancel the lease given to the mining company to start its activity in the area. We would fight till the end and the government would be forced to cancel the lease given to the mining company he told. Environmentalist, Ramesh Gawas came down heavily over the sanction given by the central government to the companey. Inspite of the local opposition they have cleared the proposal without even taking into consideration the ill effects on the environment that the mining will cause Gawas explained warning if the company sets up its unit we will stall the work at any cost. He also called the sanction given to the mining as illegal and called upon all the people of Bicholim to save the river. Labour leader, Raju Mangeshkar; villager, Jitendra Sawaikar also spoke on the occasion.

Hello Anne Marie Fernandes from Calangute Goa, Bosco D'Mello from Canada ani mogall ixtt, Anne, in response to your request In the volume 944 this Fr.Aristo J Coelho becomes Mr.Aristo J Coelho PhD. Why? Could Fr.Aristo Coelho explain to the readers whether he is afraid to write on the goanet as a priest? below is a brief response. THE PRESENT: Since my marriage to Vivian[a] in 1994, I'm an Independent Catholic Priest incardinated with the White Robed Monks of St. Benedict and live in the San Francisco Bay Area in California. The White Robed Monks of St. Benedict [WRB] serve the Contemporary Catholic and all people. Their outlook is that of a Catholic Spirituality rather than religion. THE PAST: A Salesian of Don Bosco for 25 years [1968-1993] I've worked in Goa since March 1978, after Archbishop Raul Gonsalves ordained me to the Priesthod in Navelim, Goa on Dec. 21, 1977. I collaborated with Fr. Felipe Neri Ferrao on the Vocation Commission in Goa and along with him shared good times with the Goans in Rome when both of us studied there in the late 1980s. If you go to http://www.spiritualdirection.org/Ariosto-Coelho.htm, you may read the following: He [Ariosto] represented the Pia Sociedade Salesiana de São João Bosco in Goa (1980-88) in Civil and Criminal Courts starting at the Supreme Court of India in New Delhi. As a member of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council of Goa (1982-84) he espoused the cause and causes of the religious men and women. As the founding Vice-President of the Trust for the Education of the Socially and Economically Disadvantaged he collaborated with a dedicated group of men and women at Jesuit House in Margao, Goa to sponsor activities that would address the needs of the marginalized children in Goa. A Trustee of the Bombay Salesian Society and a Councilor to the Salesian Provincial of Bombay (1982-88) Ariosto held a number of responsibilities in the governance and development of the Salesian Institutions in Western and Central India, particularly in the Goa and Gujarat regions. I hope I have not confused you. If you have any further questions, I'll be happy to answer. Please note, my first name is Ariosto not Aristo. Whether I use or do not use the prefixes Fr. or Mr. before my name, I'm still the same crook, :). Like Pope Benedict XVI in Jesus of Nazareth (2007, p. xxiii) I, too, would like to confess that this series of meditations is solely an expression of my personal search for the face of the Lord (cf. Ps 27:8). If my paintings and meditations help you seek and see your face of the Lord, Ill be more than delighted, grateful. Mog assom di ani vaddom di. [Goanet] References to Fr Loiola
Hi Roland I am currently unable to retrieve posts on my computer screen, after the first two pages/scrolls, for reasons totally unknown. I therefore apologise in advance when responding to a small point in one of your posts, entirely from fleeting recall of what you had said. I definitely do not feel hurt that Fr Loiola did not reply to the five questions I had sent him after he himself had indicated a keeness to reply to me! I am merely disappointed about this but this is no big deal for me. If Fr Loiola, on reflection, considered it unwise to reply to my straightforward questions about the linkage between caste and the Catholic Church, he could have indicated among many possibilities that: a) he had no wish to reply, b) he did not know the answers to some or perhaps all the questions, c) he had a preference to respond privately i.e. out of Goanet public glare or even through a telephone conversation etc. I would have been happy with any response from him but it was his silence, despite gentle reminders, that was disappointing to say the least---especially, after his expressed initial inclination to respond to my questions on Goanet. Despite all this, I have absolutely no quarrel with Fr Loiola and will probably ring and have a chat with him one of these days. Regards Cornel

[Goanet] Airport issue takes centre stage yet again!
Airport issue takes centre stage yet again! BY HERALD REPORTER Dabolim forever: Churchill BY HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, OCT 24 Save Goa Front supremo Churchill Alemao has said his stand that Goa cannot have two airports has been finally vindicated and urged the Union government to immediately upgrade the Dabolim airport and shift the Naval base to Sea Bird at Karwar. Alemao further said the people of Goa want the Dabolim airport to be retained forever and has no problem if another airport comes up in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. Addressing a press conference, Alemao said the report by the Canadian agency has clearly said only one airport can be economically viable in Goa, adding its time the government upgrades the Dabolim airport by building two runways and aerobridges to cater to growing air traffic. Thanking the people of Goa, especially the taxi and shack owners, for supporting his movement to retain the Dabolim airport, Alemao said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has promised him to retain Dabolim airport forever. Goas tourism industry will see a further rise if Dabolim is upgraded to meet the requirements, he said The PWD minister informed that he has asked Union Defence Minister A K Anthony to shift the Naval base from Dabolim to Sea Bird Karwar and hand over the 1400 acres of land to the Civilian airport. Dabolim airport has always been a civilian airport. It does not belong to the Navy, he added. He contended that Dabolim airport could not be used for imparting training to navy pilots, saying Vasco would go up in flames if theres a crash of fighter planes on the oil tanks in the port town. Never say never to Mopa: Sripad BY HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, OCT 24 BJP President Sripad Naik has said Goa would definitely need a second airport in the future to meet the increasing air traffic requirements. He said theres is no question of closure of the Dabolim airport since it belongs to the Navy, but the State would have to think of building a second airport in view of the 12 million air traffic project in Goa in the next few years. BJPs consistent stand is that the State requires both Dabolim and the proposed Mopa airport. One is catering to the existing requirements, while the other would take care of the future needs, he added. Naik reminded that he was instrumental in getting Rs 220 crore to construct a terminal building at Dabolim, and accused the government of not spending Rs 105 crore sanctioned by the Centre to build a structure for charter flights. http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=3314cid=2 Sanny de Quepem [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com

This is the sort of thing that shames every city in every country in the world, except in Holland where the girls are in the windows in seedier parts of Amsterdam, or in the mid-West where brothels abound. But at least the women are working in these places at their own choice and with medical and other checks made on them. There is a law a pension involved in some of these places but really, can we say the same for these girls women working in this massage parlour brothel where Mr Singh found himself. As he did not quite finish his story, did he finish his visit there with a massage, and if yes, did he indulge himself in some extras while he was there? Mr Singh sounded very perturbed at this massage palour so I am GUESSING he left without any further ado? If he left there, was it trouble-free or did he have to pay the guide, or the girl, or both? Re: [Goanet] Paan, Piss, Panji
To Goanet - A reader from Mumbai emails, Isn't it the responsibility of the Goa govt to provide tourists with sanitation facilities? The short answer is: no. It is first and foremost the responsibility of the tourist to ensure that his needs are accounted for during the entire portion of his visit even before he has stepped out of his home. The primary responsibility of the Goa govt is to Goans, to provide for them a clean environment in which to live and thrive, and its upkeep. Unless I am headed for the deep Amazon jungle or the middle of the Gobi desert I have a fair idea where I'll be sleeping and showering. Don't you? Or do you just plan on showing up in town and taking a rousing dump in the nicest open yard available? The question posed above is a red herring. Indians simply don't want to face up to the truth - that they really have rotten civic and personal habits. You don't have it this bad even in the poor regions elsewhere in southeast Asia. It is only in India that you have the phrase Kiska baap ka kya jaata hai? or its variant, Tere baap ki property hai kya? This syndrome is better known as the tragedy of the commons. The place belongs to everyone, therefore it belongs to no one. Consequently you have carte blanche to stomp and sh*t on it without let or hindrance. In Mumbai you have housewives living in luxurious Breach Candy apartments who think nothing of sending down household waste from the balcony. Unkempt, broken, potholed, garbage-strewn sidewalks in every Indian city - same thing. Bathroomization of city pavements and city gardens - same idea. Through a peculiar set of historical circumstances - for which the Portuguese have to be given due credit - Goa had stood apart in this department. Not any longer, with ghatis, rich and poor, streaming in. Ghati huggers would have us believe that if only the employers provide ghatis with toilet facilities the issue of sanitation will be solved in a trice. This view is so off the mark that I am reminded of Professor Pauli's scathing retort that it is not even wrong. Throw open a spanking new toilet for the Indian's use and within 5 minutes it will be transformed into an unusable bog - clogged to the nines and stinking to high heavens. Potty training and education have to start early. So what next? Is it the Goa govt's responsibility to provide potty training to ghatis? And then is the govt also responsible for washing ghati a** so that he doesn't walk out smelling like a sh*t-demon? Where does it all end? Should we have the Goa govt assume responsibility for the ghati's entire alimentary canal, all the way from the entry point to the exit orifice? Nothing less would satisfy the lovers of ghati rights, it would appear. To them, the ghati is a noble animal exploited by all you lazy Goans. Warm regards, r
[Goanet] Aisha de Sequeira appointed by Morgan Stanley to head Indian operations
Morgan Stanley, which split with JM Financial in India, has announced that it has received an investment banking license for India. In February this year, JM and Morgan Stanley ended their 10-year old partnership. As part of the deal, Morgan Stanley sold its 49 per cent stake in their investment banking joint venture to JM Financial for $20 million, and simultaneously bought out JMs 49 per cent stake in their brokerage joint venture for $445 million. Morgan Stanley was handicapped in the last eight months since it did not have an investment banking licence. It was able to advise only on cross-border MA, and underwrite non-domestic capital market transactions, says Dow Jones. The firm has been provided a licence by Securities Exchange Board of India. The license gives us access to what is an important and vibrant domestic investment banking market, Dow Jones quotes Hans Schuettler, chief executive of Morgan Stanley in Asia, as saying. The firm will now be able to provide onshore investment banking advisory and underwriting services, as well as underwrite domestic IPOs. The company has also announced the appointment of Narayan Ramachandran as its chief executive and country head for India. He is currently the head of the firms investment management operations in the country. It also appointed Aisha de Sequeira, a senior banker at Morgan Stanley in New York, as head of investment banking in India, to be based in Mumbai. The company, which has 1,100 employees in India, also has plans to develop its private-equity operations, and expand real estate investments. ___ Yahoo! [Goanet] MANOHAR PARRIKAR
Dear friends, I am a non-entity based in a small south Goa village of Salcete,a housewife with a very supporting husband who is involved in a relatively small scale marketing business. We are very happy with what the good God has given us in terms of our middle class lifestyle and our 2 young kids. It is no business of mine to interfere with the highly intellectual discussions on your forum ( and certainly have no intention to get involved in the murky world of goan politics ) HOWEVER, I happen to be a graduate in political sciences and wish to make a few humble comments on the current and future political scenario in Goa ( and only the love for my homeland has prompted me,after much afterthought and considerable discussion with my husband and elders in my family to write on this forum ) I may be ENTIRELY incorrect in my assessment of Goan politics ( but with the kind permission of the moderators ), wish to express my thoughts over this forum , in particular regarding Mr Manohar Parrikar.a person I have never had any contact with personally but an entity who fascinates my family and friends. I ( and my family ),are ashamed to say that we never voted in a single election since liberation ( the main reason being that my family were too busy making both ends meet )till the day when Mr Parrikar sought re-election after his first term as chief minister. The simple reason we did this ( and i stood in a queue for over 2 hours in hot sultry temperatures ,with a baby in arms desperate for her next breast feed ) , is simply because we thought ( and still think ) , that Mr Parrikar could change the lives of Goan the ordinary Goan people like me. I find it quite amazing that considering the undeniable mess Goa is in today, that we do not have a Mr Parrikar led government to guide us out of this situation.for reasons I outline below : 1) It is an unquestionable fact that he is the best administrator ( and stands head and shoulders above the bunch of idiots who are currently part of the congress alliance ).The four odd years he was the CM was probably the only time i can remember when there was some semblance of order and direction. 2)He is an incorruptible person himself ( and had successfully curbed corruption overall during his term in power ) 3)In spite of being a BJP and RSS man, he is clearly a moderate (certainly at present ). There is no doubt he commited errors, like all human beings do,in his term as CM,particularly hurting the sentiments of the Catholic community...but a) has had the humility to apologise on the eve of the last assembly elections b) has clearly learnt from his mistakes and made a positive attempt to re-concile with the catholics ( both of which have been extremely courageous steps considering he has run the risk of losing support from the RSS hardcoreand probably has lost some core voters ). 4)Unlike the current CM ( and most other CM's Goa has had ),he is a man of action and not empty promises. This ( and the fact that his intelligence and ability for rapid decision making, stuff which other politicians in Goa cannot even dream of possessing ),has almost certainly given him a dictatorial image. But then, should Sachn Tendulkar lower his standards just to make others feel like they are overshadowed by him ? 5) Above all,he is a man with a clear vision and sincere affection for Goa and the ONLY sensible explanation I can see for anyone other than Mr Manohar Parrikar being CM of Goa today is that the politicians and the power lobbies behind them are concerned that he will curb uncontrolled corruption. LETS DISCUSS,please ! -Anamika Naik

[Goanet] God and you -Today's reflections
Albert, I have read some of your postings with interest. Some of them even touched my heart as they were so true in this hard and hypocritic world. However, one of my observations is that though you seem to have a very good knowledge of the Holy Bible, you are better at preaching to others rather than practicng. I would like to quote a few examples. You passed judgement on the Archbishop who was visiting San Francisco even though you had no information on the purpose of his trip and who was paying his fare, Does it not say in the Bible 'judge not, lest you be judged'? Secondly, I have noticed many critical comments on the priests for not donating money or not able to counsel. Are priests superhuman? Are they not made of the same flesh and blood as you and I? Do you and I possess all the finer qualities needed to perform multifarious tasks like a priest is called upon to do? Sometime back you posted a request for helping some poor woman whose house collapsed in the rains. Did you do anything to help her, other than call upon others to do so? In my opinion, practising is better than preaching. Walking the talk will convince like no words can. Kindly do not take this as criticism but as some constructive suggestions. [Goanet] Archbishops visit
Hi Nelson, I do not entirely agree with you. People of other religion DO criticise, but they do it secretly, in case their tongue be cut off. Secondly, the person who criticised our Bishop on Goanet tried several times to go abroad, he has got malice within him, towards all the people going abroad. It is not in some peoples stars to go abroad, however hard may they try. Others go abroad within a month (passport, visa, ticket the lot), it happened to me, and I was not even 'thinking' of going to a foreign country I am in, such is life. Try telling some people to look into astrology, and they will call you a devil worshipper. ED. From: nelson ferrao the Hindus and Muslims must be having a good lough at us. Have you ever heard them crtisizing their spiritual leaders or asking them what they do with their donations? Archbishop is the head of Catholic church and he has followers. Re: [Goanet] Bishop/Diocese.
Irrespective of whether he may receive answers or not, Albert de Souza has an inalienable human right to seek information about the finances relating to the office of the Bishop of Goa. Interestingly, Fr Loiola, working for the Bishop's Office, did volunteer on Goanet, some information on the matter. Clearly, Eric Pinto is seemingly unaware about human rights as per his inane response regarding Albert's query. Further, whenever and wherever monies are involved one key principle is accountability whether by convention or legal requirement and Eric Pinto ought to know this. Any 'infringement' of this principle risks putting individuals and institutions into disrupte. The Catholic Church is not exempt from this kind of requirement in Goa nor even in Rome. Indeed, the Vatican has a poor reputation on the principle of financial accountability and there have been many scandals on this issue in recent times. One of the worst was when the last Pope refused to 'surrender' his banker to the Italian State for criminal investigation into serious financial irregularities. The so called 'God's Bankers' in the Vatican have a seriously dubious reputation internationally. Cornel DaCosta eric pinto [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I get the impression that Albert has opted out of his former membership in the 'association' that is known as the area Catholic Diocese. If indeed he has, he then forfeits any moral claim to raise the demands listed in his complaint on Goanet.
[Goanet] Support Romi Konkani
Hi Goaneters, After reading so many articles about the Romi Konkani on this net and newspapers the voice is lowered by our leaders. There is no favours to our Romi. By having our own elected/selected CM, MLAs and MPs, whom we will believe or think who will be the care taker of our Romi Konkani? Instead of keeping on top position/place to our Romi Konkani there is no luck now, I feel very sad. Nobody support till today to keep it on stable. As I heard from the song of Alfred Rose . Konkanik salan addun mann diunk zai. No Father/Mother/Godfather/Godmother only few caretakers I assume. It is very pity to note that our leaders are trying to put our Romi to the Old Age Home. In the dark place where the brightness will never seen or shine. That will be the end of our Romi Konkani. All Goans come out hand in hand and please, please . support Romi Konkani. Hi Selma, The word gypsy may have come from the English word to mean Egyptian , just like they (The English) call the coloured people 'wogs'. These words are colloquial e.g. apples and pears means upstairs. Actually the word 'wog' means any foreigner, English can be called wogs in USA too. But they dare not say that, coz they will be calling that to themselves. Further to the explanation you have given, it also says. GYPSIES ORIGINATED FROM INDIA. I had written to Goanet about this before and the area they generate from but it was not posted, (the moderators might have thought that it will infringe). [Goanet] God and You -Today's reflections
Dear Friends Jesus always spoke with confidence. He spoke with power. He spoke with love. All the three he inherited from God HIs Father. It was not earthly power which can decompose, but it was eternal power. Who can say this I am the truth the way and the life whoever comes to me will be saved. If you want to come to my Father you have to come to me. I and the Father are one. Foolish are we not to go to Jesus. Foolish are we to dream that we can go to the Father without Jesus. Foolish are we who use earthly yardstick to measure the property in heaven. Foolish are we not to hear the voice of our shepherd. Jesus says the sheep can hear the voice of their master and recognise it. Are we sure of the property of heaven which is promised to us by God ? Are you sure of inheritance of the kingdom of God promised to us by God himself through Jesus ? I do not think we are sure. When Moses saw the people worship the pagan god he was very angry. we are still in the midst of paganism and false belief. we still do not have the proper knowledge of the bible and what it contains .We have not learnt to use the bible and make it part of our life. we have not learnt to hug our brothers and sisters and call them their own. we have not learnt to forget about the colour and creed and call each one our brothers andsisters. Jesus has just given us one commandment and that is love God with our whole heart not lips, and love one another as I have loved you. what a glorious commandment that is but very difficult to follow in practical because we are too selfish with ourselves albert _ Windows Live Spaces is here! [Goanet] Cardinal Oswald Gracias
CSF Salutes an Asian Cardinal for the World Why Archbishop's Appointment is Significant for India the Asia Pacific The Catholic Secular Forum (CSF) - India 's Mumbai-based activist community NGO welcomes the elevation of Archbishop Oswald Gracias as Cardinal by the Pope, Benedict XVI and congratulates the prelate on his being conferred this high ecclesiastical office. As the only Asian to be thus elevated, the elevation signifies the importance of the Archdiocese of Bombay in the Holy See. It is particularly true since, Archbishop Oswald will be one of the electors to decide on the successor to the present Holy Father or the next pope. In a communication to the pope, The CSF thanked Benedict XVI for giving due recognition to India by this honour, which indicates that the Church in India has come of age and the region plays a vital role in Vatican's worldwide strategy. The CSF, which has had most cordial relations with the Cardinal elect, during his Archbishoprics of Agra and Bombay, has had an occasion to study him from close quarters over the last almost a decade. The CSF is committed as a premier laity organization to collaborate with Cardinal Gracias, in his efforts to spread the spirit of love in a country, that needs it desperately. In Cardinal Gracias, the universal Church in general and Asia in particular, has a clergyman, sensitive to needs of the every human, irrespective of any distinction. Reacting to appeals, the Archbishop did not hesitate to issue an Official cautioning against SEZs in the country, leading to mass protests, particularly against the Esselworld-promoted SEZ in the Gorai-Uttan belt, off Mumbai. He wanted the government to consult local people before implementing projects that affect them. Archbishop Gracias urged priests and laypeople to join public rallies and lobby with others to save the common man from the ill effects of such policies. Mr Joseph Dias, the CSF general secretary noted, as leader of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), Archbishop Gracias, last April launched Save the Farmers, Save India, a nation-wide campaign in favour of farmers burdened by debts and ignored by local administrations. At the time he said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's package has not brought a solution to the plight of distressed farmers across the country. Their rising suicide rate has become a national disgrace. According to the CSF, he becomes the fourth cardinal from Mumbai and only the 10th from India since Independence and has held several important positions in the Church, including being consultor to the Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts. Cardinal Gracias' book, Conciliation Code offers useful advice to solve many of the problems the Church faces. His Doctorate in Canon Law and Diploma in Jurisprudence from the prestigious Gregorian University in Rome, will stand him in good stead, even as he assists the Holy Father and serves the Church. In India , the Church appreciates Cardinal Gracias' diplomatic skills in bringing unity in a Goa-based religious congregation that had split into two groups in 1977. He has been a campaigner of inter-faith dialogue, who is known to have said - Only this type of dialogue can eliminate potential causes of tensions and disagreements between the religious and ethnic groups that make up India. Dialogue is vital and fundamental. Ln Joseph Dias, MA (Eco); General Secretary, The CSF Ex-Special Executive Magistrate, Govt of Maharastra 09324803279 / 09869481357 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[Goanet] BJP releases list on Verna land sales
BJP releases list on Verna land sales NT Staff Reporter Panaji, Oct 24 Brushing off the information provided by the Power Minister, Mr Aleixo Sequeira in the capacity of a director of the Goa Industrial Development Corporation that a meeting of the board of directors held in September 2005 decided to hike the rate of land at the Verna industrial estate from prevailing Rs 375 per sq mt to Rs 600 per sq mt, the Bharatiya Janata Party today released a list which showed land in different phases of this estate being sold at an absurdly low rate after September 2005. Addressing a press conference this evening, the leader of the opposition, Mr Manohar Parrikar said that in a reply to a starred question dated March 6, 2007, the government had informed that a number of lands had been sold in the phase I of the Verna Industrial Estate after September 2005, when the rate of land according to Mr Sequeira, was already revised to Rs 600 per sq mt. The list informed that M/s DLink India Ltd was allotted 1,361 sq mts area on June 30, 2006 at the rate of Rs 375 per sq mts, while the same company was allotted 3,900 sq mts of land on October 8, 2005 at the rate of Rs 375 per sq mt. M/s Sumit Print and Pack was allotted 1,820 sq mts of land on October 10, 2006 at the rate of Rs 225 per sq mt, while M/s Smitha Engineering Works was allotted 3,252 sq mts of land on November 9, 2005 at the rate of Rs 225 per sq mt, the list pointed out. Speaking further, Mr Parrikar said that Mr Francis Fernandes, Ms Antonette DSilva, Mr Laxmikant Vernekar and Mr Shrihari Kerkar were allotted lands on September 19, 2005, September 22, 2005, February 13, 2006 and February 13, 2006, respectively, under the utility land category at a rate of Rs 100 per sq mts, when utility plots are actually priced at Rs 1,300 per sq mts. The opposition leader said that a number of lands in phase II B, phase II D, phase II E, phase III A, and phase III B have similarly been allotted to a large number of companies and people, under the electronics, engineering, utilities, warehousing and logistics, fabrication and packaging categories at a throwaway price, causing serious loss to the state exchequer. Mr Parrikar also maintained that while these lands were being allotted at cheap rate, the process for setting up special economic zones in the state started and the GIDC authorities, including its directors started allotment of lands for the SEZ in Verna industrial estate in the same manner. Re: [Goanet] archbishops visit
May God bless you and your family for standing up for your religion/religious people or that matter any religion and making the criticizers aware what great harm they do to this society which is so sensitive igniting wars upon wars and now through the net at the nick of the button who have no peace within themselves and just dont know how to go about.Just becos they are idle or have the facility to do so using it for the wrong purpose.Let us pray for them that God may forgive them for they know not what they are doing and that very soon they may realize how far they are leading their lives away from God and also leading others too.We have a great moral responsibility not only for ourselves but also our immediate neighbor. _ Explore the seven wonders of the world http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=7+wonders+worldmkt=en-USform=QBRE
[Goanet] Setting Issues straight...On Muslims, Hindus and christians
Jason wrote: I'm going to ignore the rhetoric about causes and effects. but the fact that a fire cannot be started from outside a locked compartment was stated by one of the Government commissions, i forget which. Comment: Jason, it was the report of the Forensic dept of the Govt. of Gujarat, a government body. I also recollect reading in the report that- 1.the persons who died in the compartment were mainly women and children. 2.They were burnt from waist downwards, which suggests that the fire emanated from within the compartment. 3.the list of those who died did not tally with the railway manifest even though it was a reserved compartment. 4.Those whose names were contained in the manifest were found travelling in other compartments. The Nanavati / Shah commission which was appointed to inquire into the incident is yet to complete the inquiry even after 5 years. This is a classic case of procrastination where governments appoint Inquiry commissions to take the heat off and then these commissions go on forever so that the guilty can go scotfree.eg:Liberhan Commission which is inquiring into the Babri Commission and is yet to submit its report even after 15 years or the Mishra Commission which looked into the killings of Sikhs in 1984 took an inordinately long time to submit its report. Unfortunately, the U C Banerjee which inquired into the incident and completed its job within the time frame became a political football because the timing of its release coincided with that of the elections in Bihar, where the Railway Minister was interested. -- My life has changed.
