Regards.
Fr.Ivo

Cures and Miracles
Near the busy medical bureau is a fascinating photographic display of
pilgrims who have been cured, with notes about their conditions. This is
open to the public. A lot of faith lies behind a cure but how do you
demystify the beliefs surrounding Lourdes? Current medical opinion is hugely
important in helping to define a miraculous cure, requiring an alliance
between science and the church.

A miracle is "an extraordinary event, believed to be due to a benevolent
divine intervention, to which is attributed a spiritual significance."
Today, after intense medical and ecclesiastical refinement, the recognition
of a cure or miracle requires four stages.

Submission to an examination by the medical bureau of Lourdes
When a pilgrim claims a cure he or she is examined by the pilgrimage doctor
before being referred to the doctors at the medical bureau, which was
established in 1947. This body is responsible for the first level of
assessment when validating a cure. The pilgrim, along with their case notes,
is examined by the presiding doctors, all witnessed by the rector of the
sanctuary and the pilgrim's priest.

The medical criteria for a cure must be satisfied.

a.. The illness has been authenticated and the diagnosis is correct.
b.. The prognosis of the disease must be clear cut, including those
regarded as permanent or terminal in the near future.
c.. The cure is immediate, without convalescence, complete, definitive,
and lasting.
d.. The prescribed treatment could not be contributed to the cause of the
cure or an aid to it.
When a cure is confirmed, collegial assessment requires the pilgrim to meet
with the medical bureau over a further three years. If the majority of
doctors wish, the file of the cured pilgrim will be sent to the Lourdes
International Medical Committee (CMIL), which was established in 1954.

Submission to an examination by the international committee
The international medical committee assesses the cures over 10 to 15 years
and observes the patient's development. It certifies medically any proposed
file, so constituting the final judicial process. After a positive decision,
the file of the cure is sent to the church authorities.

Convening of the Diocesan Canonical Commission
The duty of pronouncing a cure as a miracle rests with the bishop of the
diocese of the person who has been cured. The Diocesan Canonical Commission
of priests, canons, theologians, and doctors is called together and when its
conclusions are positive the bishop asks the diocese to recognise the cure
as a "sign of God," a miracle.

[Goanet] MOPA a boost

2008-08-09 Thread Dr . Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão

The recent spate of paid singers singing the tune of “MOPA” is very much a
surprise. It also includes the Governor as quoted in Herald
http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=8133&cid=2
The new verse to the song now is “world-class airport will boost tourism”. And
the tourist will come in hordes, because they have not seen modern airports,
Garbage plantations, Bollywood style police, drug pushers, beggars, cheats,
concrete jungles, filthy beaches, raped hills, and you name it. In fact after
all these years the world know that Goa struggled to attain these distinctions.
And tourists will surely come. By the way, why do people go on tour?

[Goanet] BJP to seek special status for Goa under Article 371 of the Constitution

2008-08-09 Thread D'Souza, Avelino
BJP to seek special status for Goa
Press Trust of India
Saturday, August 09, 2008, (Panaji)

Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will move a resolution in the
ensuing session of the Goa Assembly seeking special status for the
tourist state.

"There is large-scale migration into the state because of which the
infrastructure has collapsed. We have limited resources within which we
have to manage," leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar told reporters in
Panaji on Saturday.

The BJP has worked out a strategy for the Assembly session beginning
from August 18.

"We want the special status on par with Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand
wherein we can control the financial and land dealings while stopping
the demographic changes happening in the state," the former chief
minister said.

The BJP has taken strong objection to both mega housing projects and
slums, mushrooming across Goa due to increased migration into the
coastal state having a population of 14 lakhs.

"The land dealings should be controlled or else we will not leave any
land for our posterity," Parrikar said.

The Opposition party has clarified that they are not seeking special
status on par with Jammu and Kashmir (under Article 370).

"The status will be sought under Article 371 of the Constitution," he
said, briefing media at state BJP headquarters in Panaji.

The Opposition expects the ruling combine legislators would also back
the move, he added.

[Goanet] WORLD GOA DAY - 20.8.2008 - WORLD DAMAN DAY

2008-08-09 Thread renebarreto

Dear Damaneses,

Just a line to remind all country coordinators that whatever you do - food,
dance, song, music, plays, even sports, etc.,
should be typically Damanese for WDD.

In your enthusiasm, don't let the culture be diluted with alien cultures -
leave Bollywood, South Indian, Bhangra, etc.
for other occasions. Keep WDD purely Damanese all the way!

But by Damanese, I don't mean Portuguese culture - nor do I mean
Indo-Portuguese culture.

I mean Indo-Portuguese culture of Daman which also includes fellow Damaneses
like the Tandels, Patels, Muslims,
Parsis, etc., of Damao.

Remember the prize-winning performance of our Umbrella Dance? Or the
fishermen’s dance? And our century-old mascot -
the toddy tapper silhouetted against the setting sun as he descends down the
palm tree? The same goes for the languages -
they’re Portuguese (whatever the dialect) and Gujarati.

The purpose of WDD is to highlight OUR culture, assert our identity and
ultimately turn Damao into a brand just as
Goa already is.

Kindly monitor this and safeguard our culture - don’t let it be hijacked!

Dear
Alfred,

(1)
Per my knowledge, ‘askin’ = apron; ‘bontor vo banddxirem’ = rag - in Bardez, we
use the word ‘banddxirem’.

A
girl/woman supposedly ran short of a piece of rag (Before introduction of
disposable menstrual pads in 1895, women often used strips of folded old cloth
[rags] to catch their menstrual blood); hence, she tore her askin (apron) and
made use of it as a rag.

[Goanet] 22 member delegation calls upon Goa Chief Minister

2008-08-09 Thread sebastian Rodrigues

Monday, August 4, 2008

22 member delegation consisting of People from different parts of Goa today
called on Chief Minister of Goa Digamber Kamat at his official Altinho
residence. People coming from Goa's mining belt had joint discussion on the
impact of mining on the villagers in number of villages. The Villages from
where people came for the meeting with CM includes Advalpal, Sarvan, Bicholim,
Sirgao, Maina-Quepem, and Colamb. Besides people from the organisations such as
GAKUVED, and Goa Foundation.

Goa government has come under increased pressure from the public and media to
curtail mining industry that has been terrorizing Goan villages by ruining
their agrarian economy and ecology. Chief Minister declared that he has no
interest in protection mining industry in Goa and he will take steps to
regulate the same. Mining policy is the first step in that direction.

Dr. Claude Alvares began the discussions by pointing out gross illegalities by
mining companies in Goa. Rama Velip and Dr. Avadooth Prabhudesai presented the
scenario of Colamb village with Maps. They told Chief Minister that their
village stands to disappear in case mining leases gets activated.

Ramesh Gauns sounded warning bell by getting into technicalities as to how
mining is detrimental to the interest of Goa. He explained as to how it will
adversely effect tourism and fisheries industry of Goa, besides creating major
water shortages due to mining inside water reservoirs of Selaulim and Opa water
works.

Shamsunder Naik, presented case of Advalpal mining and dwelt on how his village
is suffering due to mining and their agitation is going on since 2005.

Dinanath Gaonkar along with a former Sarpanch of his village narrated a tale of
tragedy of Sirgao village where in over 70 village wells are gone dry. They
called upon Chief Minister to look into the matter.

Hartman D'Souza represented the case of Maina in Quepem where in two MLAs of
Goa Legislative Assemby Joaquim Alemao and Anil Salgaonkar are involved in
illegal mining in pristine forest land.

Durgadas Gaonkar, President of Gawda, Kunbi, Velip and Dhangar Federation
(GAKUVED) told the Chief Minister that tribal community of Goa is worse
affected due to mining expansion in Goa. Chief Minister agreed with Mr. Gaonkar
and said the tribal community is particularly vulnerable in Quepem and Sanguem
taluka as mining expansion is concentrated in these two talukas.

Mr. Umarye from Sarvona presented the case of Vathadev, Sarvona Zantye mining
wherein if the mining activities begin then it stands in the middle of major
risks including flooding as the mine lease is located in flood prone zone on
Bicholim River.

Sebastian Rodrigues, Co-ordinator of Mand introduced himself as the one who has
been tagged as Naxalite. Chief Minister said he do not share that view and he
never called any one Naxalite.

Chief Minister requested that he be given the list of all the illegal mines
operating in the State of Goa so that he can take action against them. Mr.
Kamat, when pressed by the delegates for action he told villagers to physically
block operation of mines that are illegal.

Environmental Activists Sandeep Azrekar and Nilesh Naik were amongst others
present during the meeting with the Chief Minister.

2008-08-09 Thread Frederick [FN] Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या
Check the (seemingly Western) definition of the term Mau Mau. Wonder
how many Goanetters were caught up in this issue decades ago... FN

Meaning
*1 : to intimidate (as an official) by hostile confrontation or threats
 2 : to engage in mau-mauing someone

Example Sentence
"Going downtown to mau-mau the bureaucrats got to be the routine
practice in San Francisco." (Tom Wolfe, Radical Chic & Mau-mauing the
Flak Catchers)

A great relationship starts with compatibility. Try eHarmony today!

Did you know?
The Mau Mau was a militant secret society that operated in
colonial Kenya during the 1950s. The ferocity with which Mau Mau
terrorists rebelled against British rule was well-documented by
national news sources, like Newsweek and Time, and by 1970 "Mau Mau"
had become synonymous with "hostile intimidation," especially when
used for social or political gain. Novelist Tom Wolfe was the first to
use "mau-mau" in print as a word for "intimidate."

[Goanet] Chris Parry in the neighbourhood (another one for Dubaikars)

2008-08-09 Thread Carvalho
In the seventies my parents moved to Yousuf Baker road just a few miles away
from the creek that cuts through Dubai. In the evenings, the sparseness of the
landscape, allowed the wind to blow a salty-sea smell our way. Life seemed
almost languid. By the nineties seedy hotels and Russian prostitutes would
abound, but back then we lived in one of the two multi-storied buildings in the
area, surrounded by a cluster of mosques, minarets, flat-roofed Arabic houses
and tiny shops run by Iranians and Keralities. The Iranians had the bakeries
and groceries, selling fresh produce that came in by dhows from Iran. The
Keralites had the barber shops, the laundries and the general stores, selling 7
O’clock razor blades and Patra perfume.

Most of the Keralites came from the Muslim dominated Malabar coast of Kerala,
and earned themselves the rather pejorative appellation of “Malabaris”. As
Muslims they found It easy to lean Arabic. Yousuf Baker street was a mingle of
Arabic, Farsi, Malayalee and Hindi. Many Arabs spoke fluent Hindi having
frequently traveled and traded with India.

To the Goan, the Keralite was an enigma. His indiscernible language, his
ability to live in cramped quarters, work under the most rigorous of conditions
and his almost obsequious manner made him unpalatable to a Goan disconnected
from India for a good 450 years. To this day, in the Gulf, there is little love
lost between Keralites and Goans. What we failed to appreciate was the
Keralite’s relentless capacity for hard work.

By a strange quirk of fate, in the early eighties, Chris Parry, his wife and
sons moved into the neighbourhood barely five minutes of walking distance from
where we lived and set up the Dubai Music School. My brother, Gary, attended
this school which, in the beginning, comprised of three large rooms and a
handful of students. My father knew Chris Parry going back to his days in
“Kunbi Jackie” tiatre. Chris Parry for some odd reason was dubbed with the
sobriquet, Bab Pinto in Goa.

His sons Glen, Miles and Giles were more actively involved in running the
school. My brother called them the long-haired musicians but they instilled in
him a life-long love of music. Chris Parry confined himself to teaching the
wind instruments, although when it came time to prepare Gary for the London
Trinity college piano exams, he tutored him personally. He had a penchant for
safari suits, wearing them like the jazz legend that he was, with the top-two
buttons open. The Yousef Baker area by the late eighties was growing grimy and
they moved the school to Karama where it established quite a stellar reputation.

Chris Parry lived the life of a musician, feted in his prime and almost
forgotten in his twilight years. It is ironic perhaps that while the man of
Bhuianrantlo Munis fame died in relative obscurity, Lorna picked up her mike
and made a comeback.

[Goanet] A Golden Jubilee of service and half a century of Management Institutes.

2008-08-09 Thread Miguel Braganza

Fr. Romualdo de Sousa SJ. completes a another Golden Jubilee
“Clearly, a vocation is a gift from God, and no human effort can replace the
action of the Spirit. God uses human instruments.”  Interim documents of the
34th General Council of Society of Jesus

The mother of Alfred de Tavares, young Romualdo’s "Prima Maurinha", recounted
what perhaps is the earliest account we have of Romualdo, the boy. She was
bed-sitting him as he battled a particularly vicious bout of typhoid which
stubbornly would not subside. The worst was feared.
His brother, the distinguished surgeon Dr. Wilfred de Souza, tells how much
salutary influence their "Tio Faústino" exercised over them all, especially in
infusing and nuturing the holy vocation in Romualdo. Not that Romualdo needed
much of either infusion or nutrition in this regard”, he reminisces .
“Romualdo, since earliest years, made it quite plain that he was headed towards
priesthood”. Several aunts and cousins, used to chuckle recalling how at the
slightest opportunity, the young Romualdo was wont to mount the nearest
elevation, stool or piano, and render them all a very solemn ‘sermao’ [sermon].
This apparently took place, often, at the prodigious family gatherings at
the ancestral hub in Quítula ward of the village Aldona on the banks of the
Mapusa river that flows into the river Mandovi.
“On our way home from schools for holidays and return, by train through
Margao”, says another illustrious brother, the Texas-based oil virtuoso,
Orlando, “our Papa and Mama (Fermino and Anna Maria) made it imperative that we
visit and spend some time with Tio Faústino.” adding “Not that we required any
persuasion. That visit used to be a virtual highlight of our journeys up and
down. We got off the caminhao or the ferry at Cortalim and tramped the three
kilometres or so to beautiful Sancoale, occasionally getting a bullock-cart
lift; there to be pampered and spoilt with multitude of mangoes and sweets by
his assistants.”
Continues Orlando: “Tio Faústino scrupulously saw to it that we were indeed in
holidays and never imposed any extra spiritual or scholarly tasks upon us. That
may have also favourably impressed upon our Romualdo, that being priest was not
all hardship but included fun ... joy as well. Our uncle had a most endearing
manner in inculcating instruction into those close to him ….and he seems to
have bequeathed that manner copiously to Romualdo, Noémia and, indeed, all of

Romualdo’s Jesuit formation in the 1940s began at Vinayalaya in Andheri-Mumbai,
with a good dose of Latin and Greek and the sound of the bell ringing out
clearly in the silence of the seminary. There sermons and declamations in
Latin, the language of the Catholic Church in the pre-Vatican –II synod that
ushered the language of the people for the services. He always had a good sense
of humour  and , according to a Jesuit magazine, “Romualdo had the knackof
leading the conversation: he spoke with gusto about his college experiences,
taking time to deliver the message, having interesting things to entertain
people, and, for that matter, he always remained a great spinner of yarns and
anecdotes and was a good reporter of local politics, news and events …with a
pinch of salt.”

After studies in Vinay, Romualdo went on to Shembag for Philosophy. Either here
or during his Regency, he developed a penchant for psychology. “He had a knack
for getting things done and a sense of resourcefulness” recalls one of his
contemporaries. For theology, Romualdo went to Louvain in Europe and then he
was off to New York for his doctoral studies. He had completed his Masters from
the Jesuit Univeristy Fordham in New York , and Ph.D. form University of
Columbia, USA.

When Fr. Romualdo de Souza sj completed his Golden Jubilee of entry into the
Society of Jesus in 1995, a FAX message sent from Fr.Socius sj of the Goa
Province to Fr. Julian Fernandes sj in Rome, documents part of Fr. Romualdo’s
tumultous life with the Jesuits. Fr. Vasco do Rego SJ was kind enough to locate
the document for me.
It begins matter of factly, “Romualdo, a trained clinical psychologist, stood
out as an educationist while he was the Principal of St.Vincent’s High School,
Pune.” It goes on to say in the very next sentence, “As Principal, he engaged
himself in education, promoting social concern and forming men for others,
committed to bring about a new society, and following the main thrusts that
were engaging Jesuits elsewhere in the world.”

Dr. Jose Colaco, now a practicing paediatrician in Bahamas, remembers Fr.
Romauldo with a deep sense of gratitude for the guidance he received at St.
Vincent's High School, Pune [then spelt as  Poona]. In a personal email to me
he wrote, “Fr. Romualdo was my guidance counsellor at St Vincent's High School.
He guided me away from engineering into medicine. He is not a psychiatrist but
a psychologist.”

Sir,

Sub: Special Status for Goa.

The public announcement made by the Opposition Leader Shri. Manohar Parrikar
of the Goa Bharatiya Janata Party that the 'BJP' will seek to pass a
resolution in the coming Goa Legislative Assembly session to seek 'Special
Status for Goa' on the lines that is availed by states like Himachal Pradesh
and Uttaranchal, comes as a very welcome and long awaited news.

The Goa Su-Raj Party feels happy that such a realization has dawned on Goa's
leading political party when Goa has lost most of its lands and resources
since 1961, where Goa should have been accorded this very status after the
liberation. Having said that , the Goa Su-Raj Party believes that it is
better late than never.

The Goa Su-Raj Party congratulates the Opposition Leader Shri. Manohar
Parrikar for thinking like an endangered Goan atlast, who is about to lose
everything precious to him with the onslaught that has been taking place on
Goa's meager resources.

Goa Su-Raj Party hopes that the Goa BJP will not have second thoughts on
this most positive stand it has taken, which stand should be a very good
reason for Goans to commence rejoicing, as this happens to be the best news
Goa and Goans have received since 1961.

The Goa Su-Raj Party will certainly hold Shri. Manohar Parrikar and the Goa
BJP to its 'word' and await for the passing on this unique and sensitive
resolution in the House of Goa's Representatives. It is expected that the
House will pass this resolution unanimously as there is no reason for any
political dispensation wanting to see the good of Goa to oppose this
resolution.

Thanking you,

Yours Sincerely,
for Goa Su-Raj Party

[Goanet] BJP for special status a la Himachal to protect land

2008-08-09 Thread Samir Kelekar
This needs to be welcomed.

However, couple of issues.
1) This will need an amendment to the constitution (Article 371) which
needs to be done in Parliament. Certainly possible!

2) There should not be loopholes. I see corrupt Goans teaming up with
outsiders buying land first in their name, or even leasing it to outsiders
and making big moolah. Also, what about companies? They can be registered
in Goa but they need not have Goan directors. What is the status if they
want to buy land in Goa?

Finally, what about the govt. itself acquiring land in the name of some
fig-leaf projects such as IT parks and food parks and then giving out
to big time developers?

BJP has supported the TCP amendment that allows the above. Why is that?

BJP would do well to bring out a private bil that scraps this amendment
first, and then go for new legislation.

Samir

Re: [Goanet] Lourdes Miracles

2008-08-09 Thread Fr. Ivo C da Souza

From: "Santosh Helekar" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
As you can see, the procedure described below is clearly not a scientific
procedure of any kind.
***After all kinds of tests and monitoring, after all research by physicians
of different nations and faiths (or no-faith), after long follow-up, it is
un-scientific to say that it is not scientific procedure.

A committee meeting chaired by a Bishop deciding by a 2/3 majority vote
whether something is unexplained or inexplicable based on current
knowledge, is possibly the farthest one can get from a scientific
procedure.
***Dr.Santosh is again confusing the issues and not handling scientifically
what has been presented to him by the Committee itself. The Bishop may or
may not accept as a "miracle" what the majority of physicians, dealing with
the case and consulted for the cases, deems to be medically not feasible.
After a strict medical procedure, the case is defying medical science. An
incurable case has been cured in that specific manner, as it is given by the
criteria for miraculous cases.
Out of 7,000 healings, only 68 are considered to be "miracles". To deny is
as un-scientific as to call any case a miracle.

What's more, the fact that the committee members are presumed to be
pious Christians, as stated below, with a strong ideological conflict of
interest, and a vested desire to continue their hallowed traditions,
makes this exercise not even a nominally objective one.
***By the fact of being Christians, they do not cease to be scientists.
"Pious Christians" do not call any case a "miraculous cure", but discover
that Science could not do what has happened in the present case. We
Christians do accept miracles, worked out by the power of God, as signs of
his love, precisely because our reason tells us. Science tells us that it is
objectively so. It is a long process. If we had just to find out miracles,
one could easily find. In spite of medical progress, we know how difficult
it is to cure diseases. The Christian does not invent miracles, nor expect
that every suffering will be healed by medicine or by miracle, but accepts
also suffering, for s/he knows the redemptive value of suffering.

The deck is undoubtedly loaded and stacked in favor of affirming their
preconceived beliefs.
***This is another un-scientific, gratuitous affirmation coming as it comes
from a scientist. It is coming from his "preconceived belief" that there is
no God, no miracles. It is his biased ideology...

The claim that this is a scientific procedure is therefore laughable by
any standard.
***The conclusion is clear: One cannot deny miracles by laughing at a
scientific procedure. The procedure itself leads us to accept that it is
beyond the scientific realm, to faith in miracles. It is laughable to find
such a statement among scientists.

Regards.

[Goanet] Toronto Goan Convention

2008-08-09 Thread George Pinto
A short perspective
by Mrs. Acaria Almeida, Treasurer, Goa Sudharop

A reflective question as a delegate who attended the convention: What were our
take aways from this convention? My hope is that all delegates ought to have
left the convention with more food for thought which will translate into
fruitful action. What can each of us, either individually or as a group, from
every nook and corner of the Globe, do for Goa? First we must begin with
ourselves, then our families, then the immediate communities we live in, and
then of course Goa. This ought to be the expat focus.

My family and I left with more friends and ideas from this Convention. Upon our
return to California, Goa Sudharop has committed to the following in addition
to its other volunteer work:
1. Sponsor Fashion Design workshops for the young and booming talent in Goa in
co-ordination with well-known fashion designer Wendell Rodricks who we met at
the convention.
2. Sponsor environmentally-friendly Natural Dye projects (also with Wendell) to
help poor and village women in Goa.
3. Sponsor the USA distribution of the book "GOA, of Sun and Sand", a
thoughtful and serious look at Goa's tourism, by Goa-based Valerie Rodrigues.
4. Organize an awareness day in California to promote some of the challenges
facing Goa and how expat Goans can connect to the motherland.
5. Initiate a program so young Goans who have never been to Goa, can visit and
discover their Goan idenity on their own.
6. Spread information on current land-abuses in Goa as indicated by architect
Dean D'Cruz during his excellent presentation at the convention.
7. Support Goan wild-life activists and environmentalists like the young
Clinton Vaz whose presentation was shown at the convention (he could not
attend).

I am pleased to write we have already begun action on each of the seven ideas
above. To all those in Toronto and elsewhere who wish to support Goa
financially, you are welcome to channel your financial support through Goa
Sudharop (click on the DONATE button - PAYPAL) on the Goa Sudharop website,
www.goasudharop.org.

Please accept my deepest thanks and appreciation to the Toronto Convention
organizing team for doing an amazing job in bringing great quality and content
to this convention. The cultural flavor took us back to our roots through the
Tiatr and Mando Mogi's performances. We are very grateful for this rich and
entertaining experience the convention made available to us.

Also, thanks to the ALL the doers. Those who made time, at personal cost and
hardship, to organize the workshops and events which Filomena has written about
in detail from a doer/activist perspective.

May you sail on Goan winds and soar and touch the sky.

Thank you Toronto.

[Goanet] Goan Music: HERALD(Goa), Aug 10, 2008

2008-08-09 Thread Valmiki Faleiro

GOAN MUSIC
By Valmiki Faleiro

Among my many debts of gratitude, one I owe is to Goan music. To ‘Cantorists’
and
lyricists of Konknni songs. To those who set the verses to music, and produced a
repertoire very dear to a substantial segment of Goans. From old-world
gramophone
records, transistor radio and the first cinema, it was the music that took me
to the songs.
The songs then took me to the lyrics.

That is how Konknni songs, among few other things like Konknni-speaking friends
and
the ever witty, wise, and often wacky, world of Konknni adages, improved my
otherwise
severely limited vocabulary of the mother tongue. To them all who scripted,
scored and
sang all those great Konknni songs, here is a humble salute.

I met Frank Fernand, producer of the everlasting songs in his pioneering,
early-1960s
films ‘Amchem Noxib’ and ‘Nirmonn,’ in the late 1970s. I carried his angst, on
the disdain
of Goa’s elite and government towards Konknni, in a Sunday piece in the
Margao-based
‘West Coast Times’ I was then with. The ‘Father of Konknni Cinema,’ who tried
adapting
the ‘Tiatr’ to celluloid, is, to me, also the greatest Konknni music composer.

Frank Fernandes – born Curchorem, May 3, 1919 – played the violin and trumpet
like
they were toys. He was maestro to Bollywood greats like Shankar-Jaikishan and
Kalyanji-Anandji. He set the tunes of ‘Amchem Noxib’ and ‘Nirmonn’ to musical
magic.
This great son of Goa passed away in Mumbai, April 1, last year.

My good neighbour and friend, Francisco C. Colaco, no less a cardiologist than
a singer
he also is, opines that late Chris Perry was the greatest. I have no problems.
Both Dr.
Colaco and I were blessed to be born in an area, 100 metres in radius, that
gave birth to
several Konknni greats (the list is long, but allow me to mention a few):

Joao Agostinho Fernandes, “Pai Tiatrist” (father of Tiatr.) Mestre ‘Fancu’ of
the Holy
Spirit church and its music school, who spawned a generation of famous
musicians. His
reconstructed house at “Tepodi Pandd,” leading to the house of some “Tepodd” –
catch
Margaoites nicknaming people charitably! – still stands, as does the original
quaint
residence of the ‘Pai Tiatrist’ at Modsai.

Roque Bernardo Barreto Miranda, scion of a great literary family, kept Konknni
traditions
alive with his ‘Enfiada de Anexins Goêses’ (Imprensa Nacional, 1931.) Amazing
that
such a tiny geographic area also produced the likes of Mestre Nunes Fernandes
and
Anthony Mendes, to me the greatest Konknni comedian. His role of ‘compounder’ in
‘Amchem Noxib’ is yet unsurpassed. And, of course, Chris and Joe Perry.

Another 100 metres from here, then tiny ‘Pequeno Madel’ gave Goa musicians of
the
meter of Mestre Agostinho Carvalho. Also the much decorated singer-comedian,
Manoel
Santana Aguiar (State Award-1985, Sangeet Natak Academy’s-1995, and Padma Shree
in 2005 – an award every decade!) Born in Madel, “M. Boyer” settled in
Santemol, Raia.
His stage brother, though, the unique Jacinto Vaz, Goa’s own Charlie – Sir
Charles
Spencer – Chaplin, came from Mandur, Tiswadi.

I am under no illusions that any justice can be done to the world of Konknni
music within
one or even a series of newspaper articles. Permit me, though, to reminisce a
bit.

Half a century ago, when I was a child, Konknni was shunned both in schools and
in
upper class homes. Konknni, our identity and heritage, thrived on the laps of
the red
lateritic soil of the central of Parashurama’s seven Konkanas. Our ancestors
made that
identity bud, bloom and blossom. Konknni writers, musicians and songsters kept
the
language going.

Some have chronicled Goa’s film and stage music. Andrew Greno Viegas, who fell
to
cancer at 40 last year, was among them. Between his teaching job, he collected
memorabilia of Konknni song, wrote, and brought out the ‘50 Years of Konknni
Cinema’
(2000.) He worked at building an encyclopaedia of recorded Konknni music.

There is the almost self-effacing Bonaventure D’Pietro of Anjuna. He not only
writes
copiously – his ‘Songit, Doulot Goenkaranchi’ (2004) is a treasure – but plays
and
produces Konknni music as well.

We have our own inimitable storyteller, Mario Cabral e Sá, who, between his many
books, edited ‘Location Goa’ (2006.) Another journo Frederick Noronha has
pointed out
that this State-sponsored volume lacks adequate exposure. Selling books, even
one as
good as Mario de Sá’s, I reckon, would not fetch our ministers the kickbacks
that
outsourcing deals do. (To conclude.)

PS: Hats off to the Music Lovers’ Society for starting the Nauzer
Dharuwala-conducted
Goa String Orchestra concert at Margao’s Holy Spirit church, August 3, with the
18th
Century Konknni hymn, “Dipti vonti, Sulo kinni.” (Ends.)

[Goanet] Goa stares at bleak tourist season (Alexandre Moniz Barbosa, TNN)

2008-08-09 Thread ralph rau

The drop of 10-15% in tourism is not only in Goa. Dubai too has experienced a
similar drop. This may not have anything to do with the absence of
infrastructure of which Dubai has plenty.

It is more likely related to the falling spending power of consumers seriously
impacted by double digit inflation. In the UK and Europe it is compounded by
the declining housing market and consequently the wealth of potential
travellers.

If oil prices continue to decline the airlines will be able to offer better air
fares and the inflation monster may recede allowing business and individuals to
prosper again.

Re: [Goanet] Lourdes Miracles

2008-08-09 Thread Santosh Helekar
Many years ago I had written why the bureaucratic procedure of certification of
a miracle described in the post below is not a scientific procedure at all. A
modified and updated version of my write up is give below:

Simply put, any scientific procedure requires that properly blinded and
objective researchers obtain quantitative data about the probability of
occurrence of the phenomenon under observation in the special condition under
study, and then compare this probability with that of its occurrence in a
control (properly matched) group of people under appropriately controlled
conditions. Since the so-called miracles are by definition rare events, this is
a monumental task.

In a real scientific procedure one would have to track down at least a large
random sample of people suffering from the specific type of disease in
question, who have ever made a pilgrimage to Lourdes, and investigate what
happened to them. This is obviously extremely difficult to do. But if one could
do this, and it turned out that all these other 167,323 individuals were dead
or dying from the disease, in spite of undergoing an intensive regimen of
prayer or immersion in holy water, then one would have to find out if the tiny
probability (let us say 2 out of 167,323) of "miraculous" recovery from the
dreaded disease was significantly higher than the probability of this recovery
occurring in a comparable sample of control (properly age-matched,
gender-matched, etc) people who had the same disease but did not go to Lourdes
for treatment.

It should be obvious to those of you who have followed the logic here
that if it turns out that two or more individuals from this latter
group had also recovered spontaneously from the disease, then no
particular benefit from the pilgrimage would be deemed to have occurred.

Well, the actual situation is even more complicated than what I have just
described, as those with some statistics background would realize. However, the
impossibility of performing the above simplified, yet massive, project to
scientifically demonstrate that anything extraordinary has occurred, should be
fairly plain to most people.

The descriptions provided by Fr. Ivo in his last two posts, and all other
published information on this miracle business, show that nothing of this
nature has ever been done.

But suppose you undertake such a genuine scientific project, and it turns out
that there are 50 other cases of spontaneous cures in the Lourdes group and
only 10 in the control, and the difference is statistically
significant. Would we then conclude that we have witnessed extraordinary events
or miracles? Would it entail any kind of supernatural explanation at all?
Absolutely not! There is a much more parsimonious explanation for this
observation. This explanation has been codified in several decades of clinical
trial literature as the Placebo effect. It is an umbrella term that groups
together all possible psychological and social factors that might emanate from
the self-knowledge that something is being done to cure your disease, and from
the personal self-confidence that this ritual will cure it. The biological
basis of this phenomenon is being currently unraveled, and it won't be long
before we know how this occurs exactly, unless the guardians of the unsupported
belief in the constricted
potential of the human intellect attain their vindication, and this
indeed turns out to be their last impenetrable bastion of complacency - of
being content with living in a state of blissful ignorance.

Cheers,

Santosh

[Goanet] AMI KHORENCH SVOTONTR ZALEAT?- Fr. Teo Fernandes, OCD

2008-08-09 Thread Venantius Pinto
A translation of Fr. Teo Fernandes, OCD, Ami Korench Svontontr zaleat? The
original is appended below.

 Did we truly become Independent?
 Fr. Teo Fernandes OCD

On Aug 15th, 1947, the British government after having imposed its rule
(Raj) on Bharat for about a hundred years, lowered its flag the Union Jack,
while the Indian flag was raised -- announcing to the world that the India
nation had gained its Independence. Hearing this joyous news the people of
India were filled with happiness, and Lomanya Tilak's famous words, "Swaraj
is my birthright, and I shall have it" became a reality.

To achieve India's independence, the great leaders of India such as Mahatma
Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and other leaders suffered a lot having faced
beatings and encountered shootings. In British prisons our great leaders
shed blood. As the result (fruition) of that blood, was that India was freed
from being enslaved.

It is 61 years since our India attained its independence. The British
government who subjected us have gone and now we have our Indian government.
So have we truly become independent. Have we truly profited from the
liberation that our great leaders attained by wrenching it for us.

This question provides us with two answers. Yes and no. "Yes," meaning that
we got our freedom from the British government. Now we are the Indian state.
The second answer "No" -- we are not free. The Indian nation did not gain
real independence. If we were to watch the conditions in the nation, it
appears as though we are still minions. Let us take a casual glance.

Recently the bomb blasts by terrorists caused the deaths of many people. No
one other than God has the right to take the life of a another person on
earth. Since man murders his fellowman, then it appears that in this world
mankind has no right (deserve to) to live. Considering the recent events
it is apparent that man lives in a fearful environment. When and where will
ones death take place -- bearing these thoughts; a man looks at the
remainder of his earthly days as if being his first day, while tending to
ones being. Indeed are we truly independent.

Seen another way, the events taking place these days are very frightening.
Upon reading the papers and when news reaches ones ears, the body
but shudders. Mothers and fathers are selling their children to traffickers
who prey on their holy bodies (as manifested by their Creator). Some
mothers even take the lives of the children in their wombs. Little
children are being raped. Sitting on school benches children who are there
to study appear as adult laborers; having been robbed of their childhood
(the stage of chilhood having passed them by). Have these children truly
become independent? Undoubtedly no pride here.

Thirdly, in our India there are so many who are impoverished. The
government via sloganeering loudly (crassly) proclaims, "Garibi hatao"
(Abolish poverty) Some people live in hunger. Those who have wealth
and means are becoming even richer. The have not continues to remain stamped
upon. We have communalism in India. What is taking place in the name of
Dharma (Religion)? Killings, stealing (also robberies); before taking one
lives make sure to take the name of God. Well, is this true independence.

Fourthly, the central government makes this state government benefit itself
(controls it). The populace is cheated, the public treasuries are emptied,
the government is toppled or formed as and when it suits them (their fancy).
Injustice abounds, pockets are filled while the populace that cast their
votes are shown the ultimate betrayal. If India was independent should its
impoverished citizenry (population) not deserve a clean government?

We cannot say that we have received the fruits of Independence. If Bapuji
Mahatman Gandhi, our great Indian leader who achieved independence were to
be alive today; he would have have been disgusted by the current leaders--a
band of looters. Watching from above, observing the manipulation of the
freedoms of independence, he must have cried out saying, Oh, Ram what is
happening in my independent India?

We can still attain true independence and this is dependent on each and
everyone of us. We may only gain real independence, if we keep pounding our
steps like Bapuji, otherwise, we will enslave ourselves. So beginning now
without wasting any time, each and everyone should to gain an independence
without worries, on this here today -- Independence day.

[Goanet] 2008 International Goan Convention , Part 2 - July 23, 2008

2008-08-09 Thread LISETTE SALDANHA
The July 22, on Tuesday night, a showing for Wendell Rodricks held on the
evening before the Convention was described in Wendell's own words as,
"Lisette and Kevin Saldanha got Placido involved and he swung the show on
the road. Between him and Olinda they gave me the best "In house" boutique
show I had in my entire career." This was a fitting debut to the exciting
2008 International Goan Convention which promised interactive learning and
inspiration from high caliber speakers to a fun filled social calendar.

On Wednesday July 23,2008, delegates were welcomed to the University Of
Toronto Mississauga (UTM), with a hot breakfast, and registration was
underway from 8am-10am. At approximately 10am delegates were led to their
choice of workshops. These included a Konkani workshop led by the seniors
and coordinated by John D'Souza, a writers craft workshop led by author
Victor Rangel Ribeiro, a fashion and design workshop led by Wendell
Rodricks, A Goan Identity Workshop for the youth facilitated by Christine
Pinto and Ranvir Jangi of "Facilitation at work", and last but not least a
music workshop led by GNAT's president Francis Rodrigues.

The Konkani workshop was the result of many months of hard work put in by
the seniors and coordinated by John D'souza. In the end the seniors showed
us that commitment, experience and wisdom can master the most challenging
tasks and they produced a Konkani book called "Konkani for everyone" that
includes such gems as Konkani prayers, hymns and proverbs. An excellent
handbook for all seeking an introduction to the Konkani language. These
seniors were "determined to see that Konkani has a place in every Goan
Cultural Organization. The highlight for Kevin and myself was when we
checked in on the group late afternoon and they read us a thank you speech
in Konkani. The group then proceeded to sing Konkani songs which set the
mood and flavour for a nostalgic moment in Goa.
Paul Nazareth, Frank Fernandes, Lynn Souza-Marques, Lourdinho Rodrigues,
Pliny Noronha, Lazurus Pereira, Joao Manuel Pereira and John J D'souza were
the team that produced The Konkani For Everyone Book. Special thanks should
also be given to Joao M Pereira and Frank and Lucy Fernandes for their
courage to stand up and lead the Konkani Workshop together with John J D'Souza.
The seniors were an inspiration to those attending the class, and their
enthusiasm and love of Konkani was the motivation needed to propel this
class forward, and leave the attendees looking into the windows of a world
where Konkani is a beautiful language not only to have and hold close to our
hearts, but to also speak with pride. To the seniors, Deu Borem Coruum.

The Writers Workshop was filled with potential novelists eager to learn from
the experienced Victor Rangel Ribeiro. His small, diminutive stature does
not prepare you for his great sense of humour, wit and finesse with which he
delivered his writer's craft workshop, and left all the participants hungry
for more. The participants from this workshop formed a writer's club and
will continue to master their craft and complete their works with
confidence.

The Fashion and Design workshop run by Wendell Rodricks was filled with
participants ranging from age 16 to over 70. This three day workshop was
exciting, inspiring and fun as Wendell had promised. Participants worked
hard and in the end left artistically challenged and fulfilled.

As one participant Margaret de Souza wrote:
" The Creative Fashion workshop was fascinating and illuminating. It tapped
on one's inert creativity. The workshop provided us with tools, tips, visual
and verbal metaphors bringing the art to life in three days. We all were
honoured to be at this prestigious workshop because Wendell Rodricks is
definitely the world's most renowned fashion designer and creator."

The workshop that represented the theme of the Convention was the "Goan
Identity workshop" for the youth. Professional facilitators Christine Pinto
and Ranvir Jangi were the ideal duo for this workshop. Christine, although
petite had a force and presence that won over the youth, and captured their
attention while bringing out their thoughts and perspectives on various
identity issues. Many delegates were observers and sat in on this workshop.
The preparation and professionalism with which this workshop was carried out
was evident in the room and later in a summary that Christine gave on the
last day of the convention.

Here is a  comment from a youth who attended the session;
"Thanks for inviting me to the workshop, it was definitely time well spent
Met some nice people and learned a lot about my heritage", A.V. (23)
The response by the youth about the workshop was summarized in part, as
being
" an extremely necessary action you are taking to educate Goan youth about
our culture and it is extremely appreciated."

GL,
The G.O.A. holds a festival called VIVA GOA every year, here in Toronto. About
7,000 people attend the festival. When we were planing the Toronto convention,
we thought that we would capture more delegates if we held it on the
same weekend as VIVA GOA. Well, this year, for the first time, VIVA GOA did not
take place. The organizers had problems securing a venue, etc. They did not
know till the last minute if VIVA GOA would be held. It costs the organizers
about $40,000 to host VIVA GOA.

We went ahead with our plans. Kevin went to every Goan social for the past
three months informing people about the conference. On some weekends, he went
to two or three functions, trying to sell our convention. The response we got
from Toronto area residents was not what we hoped for. The response we got from
Goanetters was similar.

The convention was very stimulating to me. I learnt a lot from the writers
workshop. I also learnt a lot from the presentations that were made, some by
those who came all the way from Goa on their own expense. I made new friends
and met for the first time, whose writers on Goanet who I have admired for
a long time. I came away from the convention enriched by what I had learnt and
by those I had met.

Others, perhaps, had different experiences.

One delegate, who I am told was sued after the 1988 Goan convention in Toronto,
rushed to the internet with every negative item he could find/was fed. His
first post, set the tone for all that followed and essentially destroyed six
months of hard work.

Let me give you a small example of the work involved. We invited a Mando group
from Goa. The Canadian High Commission in India denied their visa application.
We had a deadline for printing the convention program and had to go ahead.
Members from the committee then contacted the local politicians and managed to
get a letter that eventually secured the Mando groups visa. The Mando group
suddenly informed us that they were coming and arriving on the Monday of the
convention week. They arrived a day before, on Sunday. Suddenly we had to find
accommodation and venues for them to perform.

This type of situation was repeated a hundred times during the convention.

BTW,
1) we missed you.
2) someone came up to me on the opening day of the convention, claiming he was
Mario. He disappeared when I asked him to return my money :-)

[Goanet] Tax implications in selling Ancestral Property to Goans.

Tax implications in selling Ancestral Property to Goans.

I have been approached by many people seeking clarification on Tax
implications when selling an Ancestral Property.

Can someone kindly explain what and how much tax is involved when selling a
property in Goa.

Apparently, the property is worth Rs. 90 Lakhs.

Thank you for sharing this information.

Thank you Oscar. Goans must boot-strap themselves to success. Focus, hard-work,
and staying positive will make a real difference in the long-run.

[Goanet] Literary congregations (sahitya sammelans)

2008-08-09 Thread Frederick [FN] Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या
Economic and Political Weekly, EPW [http://www.epw.in], is a magazine
that's usually thought-provoking, and I recently renewed my
subscription to it (Rs 3200 for individuals for three years). In the
July 12, 2008 issue, there's an interesting article of relevance to
Goa, titled 'One for the (Cyber) Road". It's by that iconoclast who
writes under the initials of GPD, and says: "The Marathi Sahitya
Sammelans have been th evictim of the crass vulgarity that
characterises our literary culture."

The Konkani sammelans -- of various shapes and forms -- have also been
patterned on their larger, Marathi counterparts. So it's anyone's
guess how relevant this debate is to us here in Goa.

GPD writes: "During colonial times, there was a justified feeling that
all cultural and social activity of people must have a collective
aspect. Cultural professionals should meet once a year at least and
exchange views and experience. It was justice Ranade who started it
all towards the end of the 19th century. The idea was that one of the
senior cultural activists, in this case, a Marathi author, would be
selected to give a lead to the discussions. Being so elected acquired
before long a status of (a) Nobel. Or nearly so! Year after year the
celebratory nature of the collective increased and now the process of
election has acquired a status akin to that of the election to the
chairmanship of a sugar cooperative."

He adds: "It is a part of the Indian psyche that we seem to be
reluctant to see that literature si basically to be privately enjoyed.
I think our poetry readings are responsible for it. In none of the
advanced societies the phenomenon of a score of poets and 50 odd poems
being applauded in one evening ever takes place The Marathi
Sahitya Sammelans have been a victim of this crassness. And yet,
ordinary people throng these celebrations with great enthusiasm. They
buy books worth several lakhs of rupees. They venerate their idols and
icons"

[Goanet] Fw: Lourdes Miracles

2008-08-09 Thread Fr. Ivo C da Souza

From: "Santosh Helekar" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
As you can see, the procedure described below is clearly not a scientific
procedure of any kind.
***I am giving here the report of the Eucharistic miracle. We believe in the
real presence of the Risen Lord in the Eucharist under the species of bread
and wine. Christian faith is not based on miracles. The miracle confirms it.
What would be Dr.Santosh's scientific procedure? "For my neuroscience this
can never happen!"... This is laughable! Let us humbly accept the reality.
We know how much we do not know!

Regards.
Fr.Ivo

The Eucharistic Miracles

The first Eucharistic miracle took place in the Naju Parish Church on 5th
June 1988 during Mass when Julia Kim received Holy Communion and the Sacred
Host turned into flesh and blood in her mouth. Since then, she has
experienced this miracle on many occasions, both in Naju and abroad. It has
been witnessed by many people, including priests, the Pope's representatives
and even the Holy Father himself when Julia visited the Vatican in October
1995. During a private Mass celebrated by the Holy Father, Julia received
Holy Communion and the Eucharistic miracle occurred again, for the twelfth
time. The Sacred Host turned to flesh and blood on Julia's tongue. The
newsletter, Mary's Touch, reported, "Immediately after the Mass, the Holy
Father, came to Julia and witnessed this miracle. His Holiness blessed Julia
and her companions. "On 17th September 1996, a Eucharistic miracle took
place in the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Sibu, Sarawak (Malaysia), when Julia
Kim, together with about 3,000 people, were present for Mass concelebrated
by Bishop Dominic Su, Mgr William Bos, Fr Tom Connors, Fr Francis Su, Fr
Jacob Ong and Fr Paul Chee. During the homily, Bishop Su emphasised the Real
Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and the healing power of the Eucharistic
Lord. When Julia Kim received Holy Communion a short while later, the Sacred
Host on her tongue turned into flesh and blood in the shape of a heart. Many
people witnessed this miracle and, as on previous occasions, photographs
were taken. A few minutes later, Julia consumed the flesh. In his testimony,
Bishop Su said,"Our Lord performed this miracle in order to confirm our
faith in his Real Presence in the Eucharist. To him be the glory and praise
for ever and ever!"

Other miraculous signs that have occurred in Naju include a vision in July
1995 during a service to celebrate the anniversary of the first time Our
Lady's statue shed tears. Julia saw the wooden figure of Jesus on the cross
turn to flesh and bleed at seven places on his body. The seven wounds then
turned into white round hosts which floated down to rest on the altar before
Our Lady's statue. When Julia consumed one of the sacred Hosts later, it
turned into flesh and blood. The two priests celebrating Mass, dipped their
fingers in the blood, showed this to the people and wiped their fingers on a
piece of white cloth, which is preserved in the chapel at Naju. All these
signs and wonders have touched many people and a committee has been formed
to investigate and examine the evidence. The Church in Naju hopes that the
revelations there will be officially approved by the Pope, and the Church
and the whole world will be renewed by the mercy of God through our Blessed
Mother.

From the Nunciature

The Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Korea, Most Rev Giovanni Bulaitis, wrote to
Bishop Dominic Su, "It has come to my knowledge, the wonderful manifestation
of the Holy Eucharist which took place in your presence last September.

This Nunciature is gathering material relating to events involving Julia and
I should be most grateful if you could share with me the experience with a
documentation, witness-reports and photographs.

As you may know, I myself assisted at a marvelous presence of the Eucharist
in November 1994"(Page 50, The Holy Eucharist and the Blessed Mother.
Publisher:Sacred Heart's Audio visual Centre, PB-495, 96007, Sibu, Malaysia)

Bishop's report

In response to this letter, Bishop Dominic Su wrote, "Thank you for your
letter, dated 1st November, 1996.

I was caught totally unprepared when this extraordinary Eucharistic
phenomenon occurred in our Sacred Heart Cathedral, Sibu on 17th September,
1996 during our Eucharistic celebration from 7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m.

When I think over it now, I can see that it was good for me to be caught
unprepared. Had I expected before hand that this mysterious incident would
happen, I would have got a pyx ready to get this "flesh" and "blood" from
the mouth of Mrs. Julia Kim for laboratory analysis. This would show that my
faith in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist would have to depend on
scientific proof. What Jesus wants from us is our child-like faith in Him
and not an intellectual type of faith based on science and reasonings. That
is why some Catholics, including a few priests, no longer believe in the
r
