It's one of the reasons I don't write so often on Goanette. People start getting very personal. It is true we Indians or Goans are emotional people, but other people are sensitive too. We should respect their opinions if we want ours to be respected. Sometimes I get this feeling, we have a peg of Fenni and then decide, OK, now I'm going to vent out my unbalanced emmotions. But this is only breeding ignorance!. The best results are only achieved when giving one's opinion without hurting anybody else's feelings. Warm wishes, Isabella- Germany.

* G * O * A * N * E * T C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * Renew your wedding vows in Goa, or gift a Ceremony Package to a close couple Multiple options to make your day extra special! http://www.renewalsetc.com Dear Dr. Barad, You have misdirected your questions, if the Times of India is to be believed. Please read the banner headlined article Will Mr. Kamat please clarify? with the self-explanatory sub-title CM's 2007 letter to Centre contradicts present stand on Goa Varsity on page 1 of Saturday, 15 November, 2008. Also read Take Goa Univ off Bill, CM to tell Centre with the sub-title State has realised mistake of agreeing to Upgradation:MP [referring to Shantaram Naik's hindsight, which is perfect . as the US Marines saying goes Hindsight is 20/20 ] in TOI of Sunday 16 November, 2008. The CM's letter of 22 November, 2007 was a well kept secret till now. Please send a letter to the CM [and the then Minister of Education to boot!], Shri Digamber Kamat who sent the letter dated 22 November, 2007 [almost one year old today]to the Ministry of Human Resources Development conveying the consent of the Government of Goa for UPGRADING Goa University Central University, reportedly with the concurrence, or prodding, of the Director of Higher Education, Mr. Bhaskar G. Nayak asking whether it had the cuncurrence of the cabinet, ruling coalition and/or the Goa Legislative Assembly as the case may be. There is a window of opportunity to know the truth: Apply for a certified copy of the proceedings of the Goa Legislative Assembly between 01 August, 2007 [the month in which the GOI Ministry of HRD wrote to Govt. of Goa] and 22 November, 2007. If I am not mistaken, there was no Assembly session during this period. The MLAs were elected in June, 2007 and after the monsoon session took a well deserved rest till the winter session, save for the toppling games in July, 2007, led by Mr. Manohar Parrikar of the GDA [not GBA] fame. The main door to the truth would be access to the agenda of the Cabinet meetings to see if the subjected was ever listed for discussion. Goa University's status would not be discussed as Any Other Business or A.O.B. in a cabinet meeting. An RTI with the Cabinet Secretary/Chief Secretary should do the trick for Rs.10/- and stationary costs not exceeding Rs.100/-, including Rs. 12/- for Speed Post to send the RTI application. One simple question and a request will do the trick: 1.Was the proposal for the change of status of Goa University to a Central University and/or its implications on the agenda of any cabinet meeting between 01 August and 22,November, 2007? 2. If YES, please furnish a copy of the relevant Agenda and extract of Agenda note pertaining to the issue. If SECRECY or CONFIDENTIALITY clauses are applied at the Cabinet Secretary level, the last resort is to file an RTI application with the Director of Higher Education ...still the self same Mr. Bhaskar G. Nayak, former Principal of Saraswat College of Commerce Management [now Sridora Caculo College of C M, Khorlim-Mapusa] and of Government Colleges in Pernem and Quepem, who could not take over the post of Principal in Dhempe College for want of a Ph.D in his Curriculum Vitae but now controls the funding of not only 28 'traditional courses'[Arts, Science, Commerce and Management] or Non-Professional colleges, each of them headed by Ph.D holding Principal without a single exception which cannot deny access to the note prepared by it for the CM in this context. For any researcher in caste dynamics of Goa, it offers a wonderful opportunity to study it in the context of the proposed UPGRADATION of the Goa University ...including the dynamics of the ephemeral CITIZENS of Goa INITIATIVE created by Floraino Lobo at the instance of one Dr. U.G. Barad, Mr. Srinivas Kamat, Dr. Jayant Budkuley, Prof. Madhav S. Kamat and others earlier this year. We have discussed the caste divide on the dais at the contributory [your contribution was Rs.50/- besides free speech for the proponents of the opposition to the upgradation, if I remember right] debate in the Institute Menezes Braganza hall, Panaji-Goa, earlier this year. Why treat Atanasio Babush Monserrate now as you treated Floriano Lobo for the debate earlier this year? Floriano had the courage to admit that he had been had ... almost as if in revenge for the way Admiral Afonso de Albuquerque had taken the pseudo Admiral Timmaji in 1510 A.D. there is a moral in the story: 1. Not all Catholics are dumb or slow witted as they are thought/taught to be; and 2. Not all Hindu GSBs are as smart as they think they are! Dr.

He is the BJP man wanting to be the next MLA of Pale-Kothanbi in the Goa Legislative Assembly. Born on 24 April, 1973, this 35 year old Ayurvedic doctor received the Nehru Yuva Kendra's State Youth Award in 1999 [when he was 26 years old] and has worked at the Ayurvedic College at Shiroda-Ponda [reportedly managed by the current Congress President, Subhash Shirodkar] as a Medical Officer. Thereafter, he was an Active BJP worker for the period 1996 to October, 2003 from October, 2008 onwards. If it seems rather clinical, there is a valid reason: Dr. Pramod P. Sawant served in the Government establishement as Ayurvedic Physician under PHC Sanquelim and PHC Bicholim-November 2003 to September, 2008 and could not be officially active in politics. His previous leadership/political experience includes: 1. CR [elected] of S.Y. BAMS at Shivaji University and 2.G.S. [unopposed] of T.Y. An educated, young, dynamic leader who has proven himself gets rejected in Goa's politics. People vote for thugs who achieve nothing for the state and everything for themselves. The absurdity of us Goans is evident from the way we vote for someone who runs a goondaraj in Taleigaon. We make one who has ties with criminals our chief minister. That gives them an opportunity to ruin what remains of Goa, and makes us spend all our efforts, day and night in protesting against what they do wrong. All because we are loyal to some party and the country's great leaders of the past belonged to that party. Pale will be no exception. The educated and sincere candidate will be rejected and people will go for their regular favourites one of their own kind. Melvyn Ferrao, Agacaim

* G * O * A * N * E * T C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * Renew your wedding vows in Goa, or gift a Ceremony Package to a close couple Multiple options to make your day extra special! http://www.renewalsetc.com Goans take to local protests to fight ills Ketki Angre Sunday, November 16, 2008, (Panjim) Goa means different things to different people. It is the perfect holiday spot for the reclusive or adventurous, a bohemian rhapsody for the hippie and is viewed as prime land for the mining lobby. But over the years, local protests have gathered momentum there as residents try to save their state. Those are angry voices that one wouldn't associate with Goa's 'sussegad' or laid-back image. A case in point is Cheryl Marina De Souza. Cheryl and her family were barred entry to the mine near her property and she paid for it by being thrown in jail for 24 hours. After further threats from the mining lobby, Cheryl hired a private bodyguard for her daughter Aki's protection. Aki's father is cremated there, there's no compromise on a home, said Cheryl Marina De Souza, resident, Quepem. From retired medical officers to the average farmer or housewife, ordinary Goans are coming together to fight the rape of Goa. They are fighting against illegal mining, land grab, political sleaze, even if it means taking risks. It was in fact a people's protest that actually forced the Goa government to scrap the controversial regional development plan, that would have plundered the natural beauty and wealth of Goa. The people's movement has also spilled into other campaigns. Recently, Goans got the government to scrap the SEZ policies, including three of the seven which were already notified by the Centre. Fundamentally what they are doing is trying to expose the corruption and the very fact that they are sought to be silenced or sought to be assaulted. What it effectively means is that the pressure is working on these guys, said Dr Oscar Rebello, Goa Bachao Abhiyan. Last but not the least, Goa is the only state in India that has a special law for children called the Goa Children's Act. It's a remarkable step that was made possible only after a decade-long determined fight by activists against child abuse. http://www.ndtv.com/convergence/ndtv/story.aspx?id=NEWEN20080072781ch=1 1/16/2008%2012:22:00%20PM ~(^^)~ Avelino

[Goanet] Is Kundapur a remote village in Udupi district, near Mangalore?
* G * O * A * N * E * T C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * Renew your wedding vows in Goa, or gift a Ceremony Package to a close couple Multiple options to make your day extra special! http://www.renewalsetc.com Dears, The Sunday Navhind Times of 16 Nov. ,2008, reports thus: Mr Gokuldas Prabhu, briefing the media said that Kundapur village is a remote place, but includes secular Konkani community which loves and respects the language. The TOI report of the same day reported remote village having a huge Konkani speaking population ...and also the Bhandarkar College campus I know that Kundapur is the home village of Mr. Kundapur Dattaram Bhat, the Executive Director of Photophone/PHIL Corporation in Goa. So, it cannot still be a small, remote village with a college. Is the Konkani community always secular or is it only in Kundapur and hence the prefix? What does secular really mean? Tolerance of all religions in one area or absence of religion or exclusion of all but one religion in an area so that the other religions can be tolerated on the outside ... or choosing representatives of other religions who share one's views, though not the religion [as done in quite a few Official language bodies in Goa]? If the All India Konkani Parishad [allegedly an unregistered association] is telling us cock and bull stories about a remote village with a college, the less said about their stand on Konkani [Ek Bhas, ek lipi, ek sanskruti, ek samaj] and the use of internet for emailing prose and poems in Devanagri [Fr. Jaime Couto is the only person who sent me Devanagri fonts and links to rediffmail so that I may read the couple of basic emails in Devanagri he sent to me, obviously with great effort], the better. Nothing has come of their tall promises made at the AIKP session on 10 February, 2007, a t Kala Academy, Panaji, when Dr. Ramdas Nagesh Karmali had made just such a presentation. Possibly the same was done at Cochin in February, 2008. It would be nice if the AIKP actually manages to find some simple way of sending emails and SMS in Devanagri ...and uses it without making the Catholic Church and Goa Government into a donor agency or BPO or both as done for the Primary schools in what is euphemitically called as local language aka Konkani. The other things called local include seedling/sucking mangoes normally used for pickle and the Goan spirit that gets one pickled. So do the GPS [Govt. Primary Schools] in the BPO era. They are used as a last resort ...when one cannot afford the costs of the superior stuff ...just like local mangoes of unknown quality. Incidentally, the AIKP conference and the Carnival are both held in February each year ...and both are partly sponsored by the Government of Goa with the money you and I pay as tax. What a coincidence! Mog asundi Miguel Kundapur meet to discuss promotion of Konkani NT NETWORK Posted on 2008-11-16 Kundapur meet to discuss promotion of Konkani PANAJI - The 19th All India Konkani Literary Conference will be held in Kundapur village of the Udupi district, in Karnataka on February 7 and 8, 2009. The conference will have a number of seminars discussing promotion and expansion of Konkani language at the global level. The president of the All India Konkani Parishad, Mr Shantaram Naik, addressing a press conference on Friday said that the literary conference is being held for the first time in a remote area. However, we have made all arrangements for transportation and accommodation of the participants as well as delegates of the event from Goa and elsewhere, he added. A seminar on effective propagation of Konkani literature through electronic medium would be a highlight of the literary conference, Mr Naik said and added that another seminar would be about the possibility of spreading social messages concerning AIDS, social discrimination, gender discrimination, national integration, literary temperament, nationalism, etc, through Konkani language. The local host for the meet will be Jai Konkani, an organisation working for the development of Konkani in Kundapur, it was informed. Dr H Shantaram is the chairman of the reception committee constituted for the literary meet, while Mr Shyam Karanje is its working president. The president of the working committee, Mr Gokuldas Prabhu, briefing the media said that Kundapur village is a remote place, but includes secular Konkani community which loves and respects the language. He further observed that the Christian community in Karnataka has substantially contributed towards Konkani literature. It was also informed that the Karnataka Governor, Mr Rameshwar Thakur or the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Mr S Yediurappa

Help thousands of lazy Goans (who were not willing to work in Goa) to send them to Gulf and other countries to work. Now, they do work abroad but few of them complain calling very hard work for normal work. BTW, Foreign currency remitted by them have benefited India (not directly Goa). Now, have established NRI Commission for them and others. 6. Now, Goans employing tens of thousands non-Goans (Benard Colaco may call them Bhartis) in Goa, particularly in Tourism industry. (Overseas Goans are welcome back but only if they can speak Konkani and compete with them (neither priority nor reservation quota but only competency). 7. At the moment, the ratio between Goans and non-Goans is controllrd - that is about 63:37 8. In Goa, we are lacking menpower at all levels. Unfortunately, we prefer more non-Goans then 'Overseas Goans' so we get them and we make plenty of money. And, to comfort their stay in Goa, we provide them Shelter, Ration card, School with their language as medium, Pan shops, etc. 9. Children born in Goa to non-Goan parents are given entitlement to call themselves as Goans with full status including with all Goa State Welfare Benefits. 10. Bishop of Goa has instructed us to treat non-Goans with Loves, dignity, care, compassion and to share with them. In some Churches regular Masses are said in Hindi on Sundays (may be Calangute Church has given the lead) 11. Taken care of our Freedom Fighters by giving them sufficient pension. 12. Taken care of our Politician by giving them a good pension. 13. Till now we have managed to retain the name of the land of our ancestors as Goa. In near future, the percentage of non-Goans will increase soon to over 50% then we have to change the name of the land of our ancestors to Bharti Goa or similar as per their demand. Unfortunately, then all overseas Goans may have to call themselves as Overseas Bharti Goans. Cip North Goa

While my remarks about boorish comments from Samir Kelekar about Overseas Goans according to you do not take the debate forward, is it your opinion that the following remarks he made does? Quote They should also ask what their fathers were doing when freedom fighters were fighting for freedom. Licking Portuguse boots, being Portuguese empregad, or slaves? Their sons are now sitting in Australia and UK and are teaching Indians freedom. Get lost guys, no one in Goa is listening to you. You are not needed. Unquote Perhaps people in Goa who are not listening to overseas goans, are listening to those like Kelekar writing from Bangalore. Bosco, there is no point you can make to me by quoting a paragraph from Cabral e Sa's article in Goa Today. I fully support what he basically says - let us stew in our own juice, we are used to it. You cannot change us. We have elected the Govt and deserve what it dishes out. Any overseas Goan going to Goa to change things in my opinion is like the proverbial fool rushing in where angels fear to tread. It won't take much time for him to lose his innocence and by the time he is ready to change them he has already become a part of the scenery. It's that bad in the hell-hole that Goa has now become. Any going to Goa would be only for the purpose of meeting one's relatives. It doesn't even come close to being merely a holiday destination if one compares to the choices available to us at half the price of going there. I find your following comment quite intriguing: Quote This I believe is the ethos of Goanet - to give a voice to the voiceless. But the hegemony of a few who insist on monopolizing the available bandwidth on a daily basis (for the past several months) drowns out those that need or want to be heard...for eg. Sebastian Rodrigues, Philip Neri, Valmiki Faleiro, Godfrey Gonsalves, Joao Fernandes, Samir Umarye and many-many more.. Unquote What are you saying Bosco? That Goanet should be the exclusive domain of a selected few and that the janta should not be occupying space? Very easy to fix Bosco, in your moderator role. Just cut them off. And who decided that the ethos which means the character, the moral element, of Goanet is to give a voice to the voiceless? Here is what Goanet says it is: Goanet is a general forum for people interested in Goa to meet and talk about Goa. And even if were a place for the voiceless as you say it should be, pray tell how Sebastian Rodrigues, Phillip Neri, Valmiki Faleiro et al are not getting their own voices on Goanet. As Bosco the poster, this post of yours was rather lacking in rationale. Roland. According to the police, eight men have been arrested for the attack on the prayer hall which belongs to the Church of God (from the Pentecostal Church). Incidentally, the prayer hall is adjacent to the Navghar police station at Bhayander, a bustling township just outside the city limits. The attackers, who also damaged the prayer hall and confined 20 persons attending the prayer meeting. Raj Jaiswal (30), an eyewitnesses, told TOI that around 20 people, including 15 women, were in the prayer when someone knocked at the door. We opened it presuming that more people may have come for the prayer, he said. A mob of about 20 rushed in, shouting slogans such as, 'Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra', said Jaiswal, a real estate broker who attended the prayer meeting. They claimed to be from the VHP and said they had information that conversions were happening here. They hurled fithy abuses at us and beat us up, said Jaiswal. Although a Hindu, he attends the prayer meetings for the past seven years since he believes the prayers cured of persistent body ache when doctors failed. The mob stripped pastor Philip Fernandes and thrashed him for trying to convert people. Jaiswal said that he then phoned a TV channel for help. The reporters came in 15 minutes with police officials from the Kanakia police chowkie and Navghar police station who resolved the matter, he said. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/VHP_men_attack_church_in_Mumbai/articleshow/3718149.cms

Cecil Pinto: 1) I was wondering when Don Quixote would rush in to the aid of the foot-stuck-in-mouth Joan of GoaNet. Will Roland please give examples of his assertions above. And the validity or invalidity of arguments from either side. 2) We all share your admiration for Frederick Noronhas balanced view. He has his own motivations. Frederick Noronha is not the spokesman for Goans in Goa. Neither am I. Are you the spokesman for all NRI Goans? Do they all concur with your views? -- RF: While I myself prefer to hold off any criticism of Goa, since other than being a Goan, I have little to do with present-day Goa, I do understand when people who have much more closer connections give vent to their feelings. CP: You have chosen well. Fools rush in where angels fear to tread. Having said that I personally know many NRI Goans who have their heart and their mind in the right place. It is the few ill-informed gasbags who give all NRI Goans a bad name. An easy thumbrule to use to differentiate is whether somebody has to constantly beat their own drum (and that of their families') to show what they (and their families) have achieved and done for Goa. --- RF: For a latest example, Samir Kelekar's absolutely boorish comments on overseas Goans do not reflect well on his PhD. To me the man is as ignorant an ass as they come, son of Gurunath Kelekar or not. CP: It is juvenile language like this by a few NRI Goans that brings disrepute to many honourable NRI Goans. While I may or may not agree with Samir's comments I don't see why his doctorate and parentage have to be dragged into the argument. Are you lacking in these areas? -- RF: Personally, I feel that Goanet as Rajiv Desai recently mentioned, has become far too parochial and less of the pulsating, exciting Goanet it was not too long ago. That was when we talked less of Goan politicians and gangsters and more of the traditional Goaness that now mostly resides with the overseas rather than the local Goan. CP: 1) One could also argue that the GoaNet of eight years back was far better than when some foul-mouthed attention seeking NRI Goans jumped on some 3-4 years back. It is a question of perspective. But change is inevitable. It is for us to work together to make sure that the change is for the better and not start controversies and make dramatic illogical statements just for self-attention. 2) I doubt GoaNet was intended only as a forum to discuss 'traditional Goaness'. 3) Kindly show proof of your assertion that 'traditional Goaness' ..'mostly resides with the overseas rather than the local Goan'. You seem to be going the Selma way too, with dramatic soundbytes that have no logical base. -- RF: Also a source of never-ending amazement to me is the proclivity of, for example Cecil to counter any criticism of situations in Goa with the zealousness of paranoia. You talk about corruption and he talks about how that is not confined to Goa. He has never been outside of India and yet he compares Goan corruption by implication to that say of the UK. Which world is he in? CP: 1) Other than the current discussion please show me recent examples of my 'countering criticism of Goa with the zealousness of paranoia'. Unlike certain vocal people here, I have a real-life life to live and have to work hard for a living to feed my family. I do not have the time or energies to react every time a misinformed blinkered NRI Goan starts whining froma distance about what we in Goa should be doing. 2) I agree I have never been outside of India. How exactly does that disqualify me from pointing out the lack of rational thought in certain postings, and the attention seeking agenda of the posters? 3) As to your question of Which world is he in? let me assure you that my world is here in Goa. Here and now. That is something you will never understand with your fleeting-if-anything relationship with Goa. Shooting off a critical e-mail takes a few minutes. Walking the talk here is another ball game. As for the rest of your posting let me use a word coined by Selma yesterday. It's time for a 'bladderdash'! Cheers! Cecil

It means all license Alcohol selling premises such as Whole sale, retail sales, Pubs, Bar Restaurants, Bar or Abkar, gadhi, sorea dukon etc will be closed on the above days/timings. Why on these days? It’s because of the bye-election/voting that takes place on 26th Nov. at Pale constituency in Bicholim Taluka If 26th is the voting day, then why the hell 24, 25 26th Nov? Sorry, I don’t know, please ask Election Commissioner of India (all affected persons may please attend the public meeting on 22nd Nov at Azad Maidan Organised by GBA*) Why 29th? It’s vote counting day. With electronic voting machines, it should take less than 30minutes to declare the winner. If started say 9am then by 9.30 the official result should be out. Don’t know why the day also is Dry Day. What areas covered under North Goa? Entire North Goa Talukas i.e. Pernem, Satari, Bicholim, Tiswadi Bardez Having a total of 253 villages and 120 Panchayats. We live in an age of superlatives and hyperbole. Though current financial crisis has exposed shaky foundations in the global financial system, the prefixes lure of the large still surrounds us. No longer restricted to the once imperial West, hegemonic agendas now also permeate the narratives of the 'Rest'. India has its own triumphalism -- popular rhetoric about the emerging 'elephant' or 'tiger', the new 'superpower of the Asian century' -- grand projections that come along with presumptions of long-lasting high economic growth to pay for a blue-water navy and nuclear shields and big arms deals. More than the specific football institution Sport Lisboa e Benfica, it was a feeling of solidarity and equality which led us in to each others' arms whenever the Portuguese players scored a goal against the British. Those eleven men in red, representing a decrepit Southern European club which insists calling itself Glorios, were playing in freezing industrialised North England, against powerful Liverpool F.C, and the reds were decided underdogs. When the match began, they were dismissed as having 'absolutely no chance', because 'these Portuguese are tiny, and not just in stature'. It was these slurs that instantaneously united my Mozambican friend and myself, that evoking a surge of identification between that Benfica team, and Portugal and Mozambique too. This is the alliance of the small. The alliance of the small I suspect that there is a latent sensibility that binds together the people, cultures and nations that exist towards the margins of across our increasingly megalomaniac world. It is a realization that the very fact of smallness is no longer a handicap, but rather offers a tremendous potential to be explored. How wrong are those nostalgic Portuguese who imagine that their once imperial country retains the slightest importance in the economic arena! How wrong are Westerners who dream about an 'alliance of democracies', as if eternally non-aligned India would fall for that obvious anti-China trap! And how wrong are those Goans who think that 'superpower India' serves as the ideal 'pay-back' strategy to expurgate their post-colonial inferiority complexes! These are golden highways to nowhere. What we need instead are simple paths, narrow but secure, which recover and interlink the plurality of tiny ports and communities created during sixteenth century Globalization 1.o1. Macao, Malaca, and Maputo. Luanda, Lisbon and São Paulo. Goa, Díli, Praia, and Bissau. The crux of the matter is not composed of coordinates and capitals. Above all, this is a deterritorialised community of the small and diverse who are committed to resist the homogenising impulses of Globalization 2.0. Sikh 'Indian-Portuguese' in Lisbon, Goans in Toronto, Mozambicans in Delhi, Timorese in Beijing: these and all other hubs of dislocation and hybridity are the bridge-builders of Globalization 3.0, of an alternative order which preserves the eternal human need to differentiate. Smallness can no longer be construed only in geographic terms; small is also different, exquisite, alternative. Herein lays the specific power of Goa and Portugal and the historical relationship which binds them. Portugal, on the Western flank of the flourishing European Union, and Goa, on the Western flank of powerhouse India share a parallel, peripheral situation. Both neighbour booming world cities such as London, Paris, Frankfurt, and New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. Both are small but not insignificant units within their larger geostrategic contexts. And both face the infinite emptiness of vast oceans. Goa and Portugal: One bridge and four pillars When engaging with Goa, the Portuguese like to paraphrase

* G * O * A * N * E * T C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * Renew your wedding vows in Goa, or gift a Ceremony Package to a close couple Multiple options to make your day extra special! http://www.renewalsetc.com Antonio made an informative post when he talked about remittances from Bombay prior to liberation. Let me add to that. These remittances of the British India Rupee not only bolstered the Goan economy but they also made up for the perpetual shortage of Goan Rupee in circulation. In 1942 Governor Cabral decided to make BI Rupee illegal tender in Goa. This caused a dire shortage of cash. Shop-keepers could no long pay taxes. They gathered infront of the Secretariat and begged the Governor to rethink. By 1954, the Financial times listed remittances from overseas Goans as crucial to making good Goa's trade deficit. By the 1990s, a strange thing happened in Goa. There was a skewed Investment to Savings ratio. Foreign exchange remittances had bolstered savings but there weren't enough enterprising businessmen in Goa to take advantage of this situation and invest in Goa. Here is an extract from something I am writing at the moment: Scarcity had become so dire, by 1943, people started dying of starvation. An entire family in Ponda, being unable to go on, was rumoured to have committed suicide. The government’s response was to crack its authoritarian whip and tighten its controls even further. The Governor instituted draconian penalties for hoarders. A shop-keeper caught hoarding rice had his stock confiscated besides being fined Rs 45 per sack. People who left Goa did not abandon Goa. They were fighting to keep body and soul together. Influenza, typhoid, water and food shortages ravaged Goa in the early half of the 19th century. What were people to do? Those that left did not suddenly discover Eden. Their lives abroad were riddled with the prejudice of racism and angst of separation from their families. They rubbed two sticks together to make a fire and the third stick they sent back to Goa, to their families. To my mind,it is only in the eighties with the world-wide boom, that Goans began leading prosperous lives. Someone said to me the other day, Goans are a community least interested in their history. I think it's true. If we don't know our history, we cannot respect those that contributed to it. Somewhere in Goa there should be a plaque to the Unknown Goan who toiled Overseas. Unfortunately, today we are told that we have no place in Goa or a say in its matters. Best, selma

Xavier wrote: While the second edition is scheduled to be held in Lisbon, in 2009, the Government of Goa has already expressed its willingness to host the third edition, in 2013. This is a bold and visionary expression of intent which has excellent chances to succeed. The Indian-sponsored 2013 edition of the Lusophone Games in Goa would serve as a catalytic force to the development of the four pillars I have proposed. First, by concentrating on sports and the younger generations, the international event would be geared towards the future, and not the past. Constantino, You have always brought a unique perspective to Goanet. Over the past several years, I have enjoyed reading your ideas. To add to this, someone I know also confirmed that you speak well when delivering your thoughts in formal settings. This email of yours itself is also good reading. The only thing I want to point out is that I have observed, time and time again, that there are tons of people available to organize sports events. In the developing world, there also are lots of people ready to donate to sporting events. In Tanzania, there is is no shortage of people willing to donate a cup for a hockey tournament. On the national stage, China just built a stadium for Tanzania that cost $360 million. The question I have is: Don't you think that kind of money would be better spent building a hospital? The Tanzanian capital still depends on a run down facility inherited from the British. Goa's health facilities are slightly better. If anything, Goa needs the health infrastructure that will introduce it to the 21st century. It is a crying shame to see people in Goa dying of diseases such as malaria and dysentery. Diseases can be eliminated by very small budgets, if preventive programs are implemented. Personally, I think that the first priority for public money i.e. taxes paid by hard working people should used to provide help for the weakest segments in a society. First, provide education for all. Then provide health facilities for those that need it. If and when there is surplus, provide the sports facilities for the strongest in the society. Let them challenge the strong of other societies. Providing public funding for stadiums and athletes of other countries is what will ensure that Goa remains small. Very small. --- Dear Isabella, Being a keen student of the English language I found some of your spellings quaintly interesting. Spelling Fenni with a double 'n' is not unique, but rather rare. I myself prefer 'Feni'. Caju Feni to be exact. Also 'emmotions' with a double 'm' is quite appealing and yes a bit unbalanced. Now considering that all your names, including surnames, contain a double letter combination I am assuming that this is a hereditary trait. A study of your ancestors' names should reveal such a pattern. Your major contribution though to GoaNet in particular and the English language in general is the way you spelled it as Goanette'. The suffix 'ette' brings to mind the dimunitive and the feminine. A small scooter, a small kitchen, a small cigar, a female bachelor, a female major... Maybe a new GoaNette could be created that is small and feminine. Cheers! Cecil P.S. I Googled 'GoaNette' and found no entries. Isabella, that means you have coined a word. Congratulations. =

Participants tend to be lavish in their praise if they like the workshop and we, as trainers, endeavour to sift the grain from the chaff so that we can connect to real feedback. The maximum appreciation is reserved for my action of giving away my entire presentation to the participants for free. However, some question the wisdom of sharing knowledge so freely. In fact a couple of trainer friends advised me to stop the “professional hara-kiri” I was committing by sharing training anecdotes in my Monday Muse series. My response is to quote Rabindranath Tagore who wished for a land “where knowledge is free.” It is ironic that in today’s internet driven knowledge world, some people insist on claiming ownership of learning which itself is based on an understanding based on the learning shared by others. Knowledge flourishes only when shared freely. In fact, knowledge is threatened by efforts to confine or control its sharing. Learning needs to be freed of fetters to enhance collaboration and cooperation. The scope for development of knowledge is enhanced when it is allowed to be acquired, interpreted and applied freely. A choice to walk the path of libre-knowledge is very liberating. An individual who shares knowledge freely is considered worthy of not only affection, respect, trust; but also as deserving of greater sharing by others, too. To BE BETTER walking the way of the wise… Choose to share knowledge freely to rise! - Pravin-da 17 November 2008, Goa, India. OPINION | November 14, 2008 Op-Ed Columnist: Depression Economics Returns By PAUL KRUGMAN - A Washington Public Radio broadcast describes near empty shopping malls around Delhi: locals attribute the business crash to a drop in trade with the West. US numbers for october were beyond the pale, and sent the Dow into a tizzy on friday. Will a december collapse of GM halve the Index again: I saw that prediction on CNBC yesterday. I believe Dubai is in the hock to the tune of fifty billion dollars, and if the squeeze on iron ore and the cruise lines was not enough, we can now expect many of our young workforce to return home to Goa from the Emirates. The world had rebuilt after the First War, and the 'gay twenties' saw New Yorkers and Londoners high-step and boogie on Broadway and the Strand. German reparations financed the Florida railroad, but greed produced the overbuilding, with a financial collapse that would gift the whole world the 'Great Depression'. The hungry in North America lined up at soup kitchens, and an angry Republican named Roosevelt quit his Party and swore never again, to his people. His taxes paid for the Job Corps which hired the likes of Reagan's father: they built the mighty Hoover Dam and other monumental projects. Starving Germans, however, would turn to a demagogue named Adolf, much as anxious Republicans saw hope in the form of an identical wacko, in the 2008 primaries, a funny named evangelist governor, in the South. We rose again from the ashes of the Second War, and one cannot deride our achievements of the last sixty years. The lessons of history are often lost on people and their leaders, however, and I hope we have not set into play the moves that will give us a repeat of the times we had hoped were long behind. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/14/opinion/14krugman.html?emc=eta1

[Goanet] Christian leaders wake up to the plight of the community

Whilst, Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, are all granted government benefits, it is paradoxical that Christians are being refused the same, especially since the latest survey of the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) dated 31.3.2007 reveals that the unemployment rate among Christians is higher than that of Hindus and Muslims. The report with data on the status of employment of people belonging to the major religious groups states that in rural areas, the unemployment rate was 4.4% among Christians, 2.3% among Muslims and 1.5% among Hindus. In Urban areas, the unemployment rate of Christians was 8.6% higher than other religious groups, which was 4.4% for Hindus and 4.1% for Muslims. Also, unemployment was highest 14% among Urban Christian women. The Report was an extensive study, covering 1, 24,680 sample households, 79,306 of them in 7,999 villages and the rest in 4,602, urban areas. Although the report is over a year old, no action, and reservations have been given to the Christian community. The UPA Government should stop this discrimination and immediately grant benefits to Christians in the Public sector. It is surprising that no Christian leader has yet made this demand.
