[Goanet-News] Electrocution kills two in Goa... but who cares? Goanet summaries by Selma Carvalho
Goanet highlights by Selma Carvalho se...@goanet.org One of the tragic events which occurred in Goa this week was the death of 55 year old Joaquim and his 20 year old son, both electrocuted by a stray live wire lying on a beach. This incident has sent shock waves and created an outrage even as negligence by certain Government departments persists in Goa. Some of the comments these incident elicited: JoeGoaUK: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-September/182782.html Freddy Fernandes: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-September/182876.html Jeevan R: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-September/182822.html There is some good news for those Goans deeply concerned about protecting our architectural heritage. Thanks to a plan mooted by the Margao Civil body, two heritage structures, the Municipal building and the home of Dr Francisco Luis Gomes may now be saved from dilapidation. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-September/182612.html Dr Teotonio de Sousa's essay on Portugal and her relationship with her colonial neighbours makes interesting reading. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-September/182633.html Another sad tragedy to befall a Goan in the Diaspora was the shooting of Joe Fernandes in Houston. What makes this a double tragedy is that the family lost their son a year ago to a similar untoward incident. [Goanet-News] NEWS: Maharashtra in fire-fighting mode
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/Politics/Nation/Maharashtra-in-fire-fighting-mode/articleshow/4984421.cms Maharashtra in fire-fighting mode 8 Sep 2009, 0425 hrs IST, ET Bureau MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government on Monday launched a major fire-fighting exercise to contain communal riots in Western Maharashtra. After imposing curfew in three towns in the region, the state administration detained several leaders from the saffron camp, including senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde, as they tried to reach communally tense towns of Sangli and Miraj. These cities have been under curfew for the past two days. The neighbouring textile town of Ichalkaranji too has been brought under curfew after incidences of arson and assaults were reported on Monday evening. The trouble started on September 3, when some pro-Hindutva organisations tried to raise an arch on the immersion procession route depicting the killing of Afzal Khan, the Mughal Sardar in the court of Aurangzeb, by the Maratha king Shivaji. A section of the society objected to it following which communal clashes broke out in the area. In protest, Ganesh mandals did not immerse the idols. The organisers allegedly also held a “victory rally” near the arch, depicting all the followers of Chhatrapati Shivaji in saffron and Afzal Khan supporters in green. Sensing trouble, local police summoned about two dozen important Muslim community leaders and requested them to ignore the developments. “But, as it always happens, some miscreants exploited the situation to give it a communal twist especially in view of the recently-concluded Ganesh Utsav festival, the ongoing Ramzan month and the ensuing assembly elections,” Shendgle said. Worried about the communal flare up, the district administration imposed curfew on Sunday. Sangli Superintendent of Police (SP) Krishna Prakash said the curfew will be in force till 2 pm on Tuesday. About 300 people from both communities have been arrested, the police said. On Monday, Shiv Sena leaders Neelam Gorhe, Diwakar Raote and Parshuram Uparkar were arrested for allegedly flouting curfew orders. The police had, on Sunday, prevented BJP legislators Prakash Shendge and Madhu Chavan from entering Sangli. In Mumbai, police detained senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde at the airport before he could board a flight to Kolhapur. Mr Munde made the best of the opportunity by launching a sit-in at the airport. Surrounded by hundreds of BJP supporters, the agitation created a ruckus at the airport for quite some time. Mr Munde was later released. He then proceeded to Miraj by road. The incidence has come as a major embarrassment for the Congress-NCP government since the state home minister Jayant Patil, along with many veterans like RR Patil and Patangrao Kadam, come from Sangli. The failure of the government to contain the situation has left the government worried about the political fall-out ahead of the state assembly elections next month.

They are sort of embarrassing to me. The only reason I answered your post is because, as each year goes by, I realize that I am beginning to forget more and more of what I once knew. Secondly, I know people here on Goanet who are only a generation or half a generation ahead of me who have vastly more info than I do. Every-time I try and convince them to contribute to Goanet, the reply I get goes along these lines, You got to be kidding, if I contribute the only replies will be from negative people who have too much time on their hands. This is a serious problem here and is badly hampering the quality of net group we could have. The icing on the cake is your story on the two Goan teachers in the royal palace in Kathmandu! You reserved the best for the last. Why not share this with readers in Goa? At this very moment, there are two people who have their fingers crossed and who are thinking, I hope to the Lord that he keeps his big mouth shut. Which is what I will do. As teachers, I am sure they will write their story when they are ready. You may find an answer to any Goan in the kingdom of Jigme-Wagme Wan-chook (if I correctly remember the name of Bhutan's royalty as pronounced by Delhi's Doordarshan newscasters.) I hope we will hear a Goan story from Bhutan At this moment, North Korea is the only place where I do not feel confidence that any Goan has been to. Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com Monti Fest It’s ’Monte Saibinnichem Fest’ or Feast of O/L of Mount Mary. This feast or it’s novenas always remind me of the tradition of our time. After every Novena Mass, in the morning, there was a tradition of tossing of the flowers by the children in the name of the Our Lady. For 10 days, we attend there with basket full of flowers. Flower collection used to take place on the previous evening. We often kept the flowers/branches soaked in ‘Moddki’ large copper pot filled with water in order to keep it fresh. Next early moning we would leave by 6.45 so as to be in time for 7’oclock mass. End of the mass say at 7.30, we as kids, used to form a double line facing each other in the main/middle passage (where we form a line to receive Holy communion). Always the same hymn. VIRGEM MAE DE DEUS Valei nos VIRGEM MAIE DE DEUS Ajudai nos etc etc http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk16/3226011353/sizes/l/ We had to toss the flower up the moment they say VIRGEM MAIE DE DEUS each time. Holding the specially made bamboo baskets etc in one hand, we used the other to toss the flowers. The best one we used to keep last to put before the statue of Our Lady. Most common flowers at this time were Copa Fulam, Dosnni Fulam (upto 4 varieties), Alfinet,.Divli etc Some parents use to buy flowers from Margao in bulk and preserve them in water and give their children in daily portion basis. Later on, the Virgem Mae de Deus change to Konkani version as DEVACHE MATE, ADAR DHI AMKAM DEVACHE MATE, SAMBALL TUM AMKAM etc etc We may have missed one or two Nevenas but we never miss the feast day. Because on the feast day, each one of us given sweets usually ‘dos’ The fest is always celebeated by the Legion of Mary or ‘Lejao Mari’ as we call. Sadly, this tradition also disappeared now. i wonder if any other churches in Goa followed this tradition or whether still following now. Today, the 8th Sept, most churches celebrates the Feast of our lady of Mount Mary. A few Sandeeps, Pravins or Vidyadhars and Ramesh's is not Goa of today. The poison has started running in the veins. It is on the verge of entering the heart. Let us sincerely think over this and not just throw money just because the church wants it. One sunday's collection goes to caritas but till today I do not know what is done with the money. We have no obligation to look after foreigners who have got aids. The caritas of Goa may give a big explanation which my small mind will not accept. _ View photos of singles in your area Click Here http://clk.atdmt.com/NMN/go/150855801/direct/01/

We in Goa are complaining that it is so costly to be in the hospital for a few days. Drugs are costly, physicians' fees are high. In fact, life is costly. It is costly to become sick. People are frightened by H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu). They are also afraid to be diagnosed of cancer and of other incurable diseases. You should invent some drugs for these diseases... Sodium bicarbonate may not help much, but can palliate, as chicken soup can be adjunct therapy for viral fever (which drugs cannot cure). Hoping for better solutions. Regards. Fr.Ivo An older gentleman had an appointment to see the urologist. He shared offices with several other doctors. The waiting room was filled with patients. As he approached the receptionist's desk, he noticed that the receptionist was a large unfriendly woman who looked like a wrestler. He gave her his name. In a very loud voice, the receptionist said, YES, I HAVE YOUR NAME HERE. YOU WANT TO SEE THE DOCTOR ABOUT IMPOTENCE, RIGHT? All the patients in the waiting room snapped their heads around to look at the very embarrassed man. He recovered quickly, and in an equally loud voice replied, NO, I'VE COME TO INQUIRE ABOUT A SEX CHANGE OPERATION, BUT I DON'T WANT THE SAME DOCTOR THAT DID YOURS. DON'T MESS WITH OLD FOLKS.:=))

Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com Goa's Very Own First Goan Swine Flu Victim Swine Flu devours it's first Goan victim, a happy family of four, father, mother, son and daughter, shattered and devastated. She was the heartbeat of the family, a loving daughter to her parents, a loving and affectionate sister to her brother and a well loved and liked young girl buy the villagers. While the whole village is grieving, we can now only pray for comfort and strength for the family and a heavenly abode for Diana. A visit to her cousin's place in Margao was all the bubbly young girl had done and death was the price she paid. Diana, I knew her from her birth, as her mother was a next door neighbour, saw her grow up into a bubbly young lady, full of life and ever smiling, her's was the first house coming into our village and most often than not, on my visit back home, would be greeted by her smiling face and a courteous and respectful hello uncle. Or a wave of her arm from the balcony of her house. Diana's passing away will not only be a loss to her family, but to the entire Nuem community, she was full of life and cheer, very hard working, always respectful towards the elders and ever smiling. Such a young girl, crudely done in by what we call destiny, we have no answers to the why's and how's, all that we know is, a good young girl has been taken away from us. We will certainly miss you Diana. When she fell sick the whole village had visited her at the Chinchinim hospital, people and relatives kept on visiting her even after it was confirmed that she had Swine Flu, the whole village prayed together for her recovery, but if was not to be so, she was called back to her heavenly abode in the her prime of her life. Nearly every day calls were made by our villagers from here in the UAE and were told that she was improving and responding and were indeed happily praying for her full recovery, then on Sunday at 8:45, I received a call saying that Diana was no more, I just went blank and silent, how could this happen ? Just the night before I had spoken to her cousin at the hospital and was told that she was improving, the news paper reports too had said the same. The day after her death there were reports in the press that she did not respond to any treatment from day one, so how come there were conflicting reports in the news papers ? This unfortunate incident has indeed shaken our community and it will take a long time for the sighs to turn to laughter, and may her death bring the once happy, united community even closer in this tragedy, Adeus dear Daian, see you up there, some day. More hereunder. Con http://www.cancerdecisions.com/content/view/228/2/lang,english/ ***I came to know about Dr.Tullio Simoncini's new treatment of cancer some time back. At the beginning of the 1900s, one person out of 100 died of cancer; today it is one out of three. We foresee that within a few years one out of two people will die of cancer. A mortality rate of 90 per cent, that is, 1.8 million deaths out of the 2 million cases recorded every year throughout the world, is observed for the majority of tumors of the digestive apparatus, those for example that are not subject to diagnostic ambiguities (such as esophagus, stomach, liver, and pancreas). The results for lung cancer are always similar, that is, the same 90 per cent death rate, and so on for all those cancers where mystification or data manipulation is not possible. Cancer is the most important problem in medicine, not only because of its size, but especially because of the long symptomatological line that comes with this disease, especially in its more advanced phases, and the state of extreme psychological suffering which both the patient and their relatives are victims of. It is no coincidence that the American president Richard Nixon in far-off 1971 proclaimed a real war against the disease of the century. Since then, this war has absorbed, worldwide, a quantity of economic, scientific and human resources which exceeds the limit of any imagination, but the results - it is useless to hide it - are a failure. Apart from the continuously renewed commitments, the repeated promises, and the supposedly miraculous most recent findings, there is very little that is concrete: the cause of cancer is and remains unknown. The problem is unsolved. Each year, millions of people are annihilated by this inexorable disease, as if they had been sucked into a spiral of death and pain which is almost always impossible to fight. Cancer is the enormous sword of Damocles, the terrible vindictive god of a surpassed social system, where defenseless citizens must passively accept a bankrupted management of their health, and are forced to delegate to undeserving others - the blind businessman at the vertex of the pyramid - the care of their disease. ***It is some type of alleviation. It is not total cure. Regards. Fr.Ivo

This is not something new. It was a shock when Franklin Roosevelt introduced Social Security payments, signing the Social Security Act on August 14, 1935. Conservatives shouted: ?This is socialism.? It was another shock to the conservative Catholic when, on July 30, 1965. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare and Medicaid into law. Many conservatives yelled, ?Foul. This is socialistic.? Of course that was then and now is now, and the only yelling would be if some government official tried to take away either social security or Medicare/Medicaid. Mario responds: As with all government-run businesses and services, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are monumental failures from a financial point of view, and all projected to be defunct in a few years without massive changes and/or infusions of taxpayer money. Excerpt: It may take a bit of gulping, but we?ll get over it when we see our poorer neighbours getting health care they could never have afforded before. Mario responds: There are far better ways of helping those who need help using the efficiency of the private sector, which has been hampered by government regulators, than by letting the government destroy the health care system for 300 million people while pretending to help the 15 million hard core uninsurables. The uninformed person who wrote this article also seems ignorant of the fact that the current proposals being discussed do not exempt Catholic hospitals and physicians from performing abortions and other contraceptive services they may object to for religious reasons.
[Goanet] Pilerne gets back ... its Maddani

Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com Those familiar with these parts of Bardez would know of the Maddani area of Pilerne, a road leading to part of the village (at the foothills). It got its name from the fact that, in the past, this road had scenic coconut trees planted on both sides. With the demise of the comunidades, the growth of tenancy claims and the spurt in real estate values, who cares for these simple but aesthetic aspects of Goan village life anymore? Over the years, the trees simply collapsed, fell with amazing regularly during each successive monsoons (sometimes taking the electricity overhead wires with them... whatever happen to plans for underground power cables?). Of late, I've noticed that some patches of the road once again has coconut trees planted on both sides. This is good news... On the Saligao-Parra road however, not much replanting has happened. In a few cases, non-coconut and easy-to-grow plants have replaced the fallen coconut trees. In addition, the anti-public transport motorcar-friendly policies of the Goa government (have you seen any of our middle-classes critiquing this?) means that the Saligao-Parra road is being currently widened, and one doesn't know what happens to the few surviving coconut trees at the sides of the roads. Just sharing a few thoughts. FN -- FN +91-9822122436 P +91-832-2409490 Konkani adages http://konkani-adages.notlong.com/ Medieval Goa http://medieval-goa.notlong.com/
[Goanet] Another tragic story involving a Goan family -- this time in the US.

Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com From the Herald website PANJIM, SEPT 7 It was the first day of work for 54-year-old Joe Fernandes at The Siesta Food Mart in North Houston, USA. He came face-to-face with three gunmen who robbed him and then murdered him. The entire incident was caught on the surveillance video, but the three gunmen were masked and covered from head to toe to avoid recognition. They jumped behind the counter and harassed Fernandes for money before shooting him dead. He was a family man, the father of a daughter and, tragically, a son – John Fernandes – who was murdered a year prior by his roommate in Joe Fernandes was born in Candolim. He married Agnes and they had two children, the late John and Tina. The family first lived in Kuwait, and then moved to the US in 2000. Murdered in a convenience store in north Houston just after 10 pm on last Monday night, he had only been on the job just a couple of hours. Police believe one of the killers cased out the store before the murder and the clerk spoke to one of his killers just an hour before his death. Houston police believe Joe was shot because he didn’t act fast enough for the masked gunmen. But they’re looking for a customer who bought cookies and water about an hour earlier. The video shows a gold or tan sedan driving slowly. A man enters the store, grabs some snacks and pays Fernandes, who’s behind the counter. An hour later, three armed men sneak in and, within 45 seconds, Fernandes is dead. Houston Police believe the men were professionals, knew what they were doing and were fully intent on completing the task at hand. Detectives say the three men got away in an older model gold or tan four-door vehicle. Fernandes’ 23-year-old son John was also brutally murdered a year ago; shot and set on fire allegedly by his roommate at their Missouri City apartment. http://www.39online.com/news/local/kiah-siesta-mart-murder-story,0,4221178.story Police are still searching for three suspects involved in Monday night's murder of a convenient store clerk. It happened at Aldine Bender and Cotillion in northeast Houston. Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward and police decided to release the disturbing surveillance Tuesday. We've been working these murders and robberies for a very long time, said HPD Police Officer Michael Miller. I don't think I've seen guys like this; very professional, know what they are doing. It may be difficult watching the surveillance video, which shows the last seconds of a local convenience store clerk's life, but police hope it will help capture the three men who murdered him. When they enter the store, they were completely gowned from head to toe, said Miller. Police say in a span of less than a minute the men, wearing masks and gloves, entered the Siesta Food Mart around 10pm, robbed 54 year-old Joe Fernandes, and then fatally shot him. Because of his cooperation they did not need to kill him, said Miller. Police believe one of the suspects may be a customer wearing a white T-shirt, seen earlier inside the store. They also believe a gold-colored sedan, possibly a Buick, may have been the getaway car. On Tuesday the store was closed as police continue their investigation. The only one inside was former store employee, Luis Garcia. I'm supposed to be dead, because I work all the nights in this store, said Garcia. Police say Fernandes was a temporary fill-in, and the store had been robbed before. It was like two months ago... Four kids, no more than 18 years old, said Garcia. All of them were masked. I did what ever they asked me. They took the money and left. Only this time, the crooks also took life of a hardworking and well loved father. The family is experiencing unfathomable tragedy because their son was shot and killed less than a year ago in Missouri City, said Miller. They were still grieving over that incident when they lost their father.

Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com Paltadacho Munis - The Man Beyond the Bridge By Laxmikant Shetgaonkar It is the only film in the history of konkani cinema offcially selcted for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Showing at: Mon. September 14 06:30PM SCOTIABANK THEATRE 3 Wed. September 16 08:45PM SCOTIABANK THEATRE 4 Sat. September 19 10:00AM VARSITY 1 From: http://www.tiff.net/filmsandschedules/films/manbeyondthebridge Description Drawing together a keen environmental sensitivity with a nuanced view of village dynamics, The Man Beyond the Bridge is a rare find from rural India. Unfolding in Konkani – a language with no unique script that almost never appears in films – this is a gentle romance set against the lovely forest setting of Goa's Western Ghats. Vinayak is a forest ranger. His wife has died, leaving him lonely as he patrols vast areas of protected landscape. One day, he finds a madwoman cowering behind his house. He offers her shelter, and slowly, a tentative relationship begins to form. Each night he leaves out food for her, and each night she returns to eat and sleep in his yard. Ignoring the gossip of the nearby village, which casts out anyone with a mental illness, Vinayak soon takes the woman into his home, and then into his bed. But when she becomes pregnant, it is he who risks becoming an outcast. Director Laxmikant Shetgaonkar tells his tale with grace and attentiveness. Immersed in the culture of the region, he takes village traditions and beliefs seriously, while casting a jaundiced eye on those who exploit them. A subplot introduces a village headman who plans to build a temple on forest land in a crass bid for election. It's Vinayak's duty to oppose the construction, but the headman has key villagers in his pocket, including thieves who steal forest wood to build the temple, and even the priest who could legitimize the union of Vinayak and his new love. Far from the sensory overload of India's big cities, The Man Beyond the Bridge satisfies itself with exploring smaller but enduring dilemmas. What liberties can be taken with a natural environment by those entrusted to protect it? Is a man who marries a madwoman helping her or taking advantage? Shetgaonkar takes up these questions with humility and heart, finding an apt metaphor in a delicate rope bridge that links the wild forest to the so-called civilization of the village. Cameron Bailey Laxmikant Shetgaonkar was born in Goa, India. He studied theatre arts and began his career as an acting instructor at the National School of Drama in New Delhi. He has directed several theatre productions, as well as both documentary and fiction films. His films include A Seaside Story (05) and The Man Beyond the Bridge (09). (CRZ, Illegal structures, Goanet, JoeGoaUk etc) We all know CRZ (coastal Regulatory Zones) Regulations were in force since 1992, Despite these regulation or laws, many people continue involving in new construction activities such as new houses, bungalows, sheds, garages, extension to existing houses etc. Now, about 15 years later there is big hue and cry about these illegal activities in the coastal areas. Some leaders like Mathany etc agitated in the interest of the people or otherwise to save their illegal structures. It was demanded that all such developments or building structures including sheds upto December 2007 be saved and regularized which means converting from illegal to legal. Laws are laws or for that matter Rules are Rules, nothing doing. Yet, sometimes, as a special case, we do give some special attention or special treatment to some or all people on humanitarian grounds or otherwise thus by bending the laws or by promulgating an ordinance. Well, Goanet too has its own rules and regulations but some members may have survived for many years bypassing the rules. I guess, JoeGoaUk is one of them. Since he is with Goanet for more than 6 years with the SAME structure, he makes an humble plea to the board members to get is structure regularised on the same grounds as above. Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com Swiss topple U.S. as most competitive economy: WEF By Sven Egenter GENEVA (Reuters) – Switzerland knocked the United States off the position as the world's most competitive economy as the crash of the U.S. banking system left it more exposed to some long-standing weaknesses, a report said on Tuesday. The World Economic Forum's global competitiveness report 2009/2010 showed economies with a large focus on financial services such as the U.S., Britain or Iceland were the losers of the crisis. The U.S. as the world's largest economy lost last year's strong lead, slipping to number two for the first time since the introduction of the index in its current form in 2004. We have been expecting for some time that it may lose its top-position. There are a number of imbalances that have been building up, said Jennifer Blanke, Head of the WEF's Global Competitiveness Network. There are problems on the financial market that we were not aware of before. These countries (like the U.S. and Britain) are getting penalized now, she said. Trust in Swiss banks also declined. But in the assessment of banks' soundness, the Alpine country still ranked 44th. U.S. banks fell to 108 -- right behind Tanzania -- and British banks to 126 in the ranking, now topped by Canada's banks. The WEF bases its assessment on a range of factors, key for any country to prosper. The index includes economic data such as growth but also health data or the number of internet users. The study also factors in a survey among business leaders, assessing for example the government's efficiency or the flexibility of the labor market. The WEF applauded Switzerland for its capacity to innovate, sophisticated business culture, effective public services, excellent infrastructure and well-functioning goods markets. The Swiss economy dipped into recession last year, too and had to bail out its largest bank UBS. But its economy is holding up better than many peers and most banks are relatively unscathed by the crisis, which drove U.S. banks into bankruptcy. The WEF said the U.S. economy was still extremely productive but a number of escalating weaknesses were taking its toll. Concerns were growing about the government's ability to maintain distance to the private sector and doubts rose about the quality of firms' auditing and reporting standards, it said. BRAZIL LEAPS Leading emerging markets Brazil, India and China improved their competitiveness despite the crisis, the report showed. But Russia saw one of the steepest declines among the 133 countries assessed, falling back 12 places to 63, as worries about government efficiency and judicial independence rose, the WEF said. After years of rapid improvement, which took it to place 29, China now had to tackle shortcomings in areas such as financial markets, technological readiness and education as it could no longer rely on cheap labor alone to generate growth. India, ranked 49th, was in turn well positioned in complex fields such as innovation but had still to catch up on basics such as health or infrastructure, the WEF said. Brazil leapt by 8 ranks to 56th, as measures to improve fiscal sustainability and to liberalize and open the economy showed effects, the report said. Among the top-ten, Singapore moved up to third from fifth, swapping positions with Denmark, which fell behind fellow-Nordic country Sweden. Finland as 6th and Germany as 7th stayed put while Japan and Canada overtook the Netherlands. The WEF study named African countries Zimbabwe and Burundi as the world's least competitive economies. In the case of Zimbabwe, the WEF noted the complete absence of property rights, corruption, basic government inefficiency as well as macroeconomic instability as fundamental flaws.
