From: Gilbert Lawrence gilbert2...@yahoo.com Arre saaiba Ivo, You had a better tongue-in-cheek reply to me, than the one I gave Ashley. You bowled a googley with your post. You want me to trade the home-made cookies, cakes, canoli, chocolates and chocolate-covered-strawberries, and wine which patients here bring us daily; for the Goan 'appurbaen- made' chorrisso, sanna, bibiq, ladoos, halwa and feni? Perhaps you replied on behalf of yourself and Ashley. Do you want me to come to Goa to hold your hands while you-guys are getting the prostate checked for cancer? I heard the good doctors check the prostate with two fingers ... to get a second opinion. And in the case of women the polite doctors always say, At your cervix ... er.. er.. service. On a more serious note as far as cancer screening and treatment, I can only leave you and others with a useful quote which likely you know: Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible. ~ St. Francis of Assisi ***Are Ixtta, supurlya Goynkara, tum huxar. You seem to be homesick, Goa-loving, niz-khoro Goynkar... You are smart enough to understand what I meant by calling you back to Goa. You can seriously, scientifically verify what I am stating and continue to state from my observation and experience, though I am being called scientifically illiterate and ignoramus by some experts... It is being confirmed everyday among our people around. Deaths from cancer are galore... I do not know how the oncologists examine over here, with two or four fingers... Regards. Fr.Ivo -- Ivo da C.Souza Dr.Gilbert, we need you here. You may not be able to cure any case of cancer with radiotherapy (or surgery or chemotherapy), but at least you will be able to comfort cancer patients with your humanity and objectivity. --- From: Gilbert Lawrence Ashley as soon as we get healthcare reform passed in Washington, DC, I will come down to Goa hire a taxi for you, your family and friends to take you to the family-doctor (whose clinic is likely at the village tinto) for a cancer check-up. [Goanet] Talking Photos: Some dirty Panjim Pics
Cecil, I largely agree with you. I too feel that Selma’s comments are grossly exaggerated. Panjim was a beautiful city then and it continues to be a beautiful city now. It was badly managed then and it continues to be badly managed now, especially by the present CCP Council which stinks. However, the facilities are much better now then they used to be in those days and in that sense you are right when you say that Panjim has only improved and has by no means deteriorated. Of course, Panjim city really started taking shape during Manohar Parrikar’s tenure as the Chief Minister and we must give the city MLA the due credit for that. If you can recollect, the Children’s Park was in such a pathetic condition 20 years back, with little children hardly frequenting it. Ditto with the city bus-stand which too was a big mess. For the cinema buffs, watching a movie was nothing short of going through an Ordeal, with theatres in an unhygienic condition, rats moving all around and seats infected with bugs. The city lacked so many other facilities too. Today, the city can boast of having a World Class Multiplex, with at least 5 to 6 ‘Film Festivals’ held every year, giving the city residents plenty of scope for fun and entertainment, all year round. The Children’s Park with its improved lawns, fountains, swings and other play-stations too is in a much better shape than it used to be earlier. We organize so many of our programmes and events there. The Kala Academy too is much improved. The Park cum Garden in Caranzalem has been beautifully developed. The city Bus-stand is much better organized now; the Ambedkar Garden in its vicinity is another place that has been wonderfully developed along with the ‘Spring’ at Boca de Vaca. Then for the sportsmen, sports facilities are much better, whether at the Indoor Stadium at Campal or the Oratory in Don Bosco’s or the Gasper Dias at Miramar. In brief, Panjim is more appealing today than it was in the past. Having said that, the city Garden and the Campal Football stadium have gone from bad to worse. But with a more responsive Government and a more efficient and honest CCP, these can be put back to shape too. Cheers, Sandeep

Cops, Hindu group nexus in blast: Law panel head Mumbai: Goa's Law Commission Chairman Ramakant Khalap has made a sensational claim, pointing to a nexus between the police, top bureaucrats and even some state MLAs with the Hindu right wing group Sanatan Sanstha - the organisation suspected to be behind the Goa blast. Sanatan Sanstha has penetrated into the police department, legislature and even the judiciary. The race has begun to protect perpetrators, said Khalap. It seems that the Law Commission Chairman is echoing what the Goa Home Minister Ravi Naik had earlier revealed. The Minister had said that the police are investigating the links of State Transport Minister Ramkrishna Dhavalikar's wife with the controversial organisation. The Minister's wife is involved in the Saunstha, he said. The blast in Margao on October 17 has brought to the fore the ugly face of terrorism in Goa. Fortunately, the bomb exploded before it could be planted, killing the two who allegedly planned to massacre innocent people. This dastardly terrorist attack was reportedly intended to target the Diwali Narkasur festival, which the Hindu outfit Sanatan Sanstha denounces as a glorification of evil. http://ibnlive.in.com/news/cops-hindu-group-nexus-in-blast-law-panel-hea d/103937-3.html?from=tn ~(^^)~ Avelino

I too feel that Selma’s comments are grossly exaggerated. --- Dear Sandeep, I agree that a lot of things have improved in Goa during the last 20 years. Unfortunately, I cannot include the three main townships of Margao, Vasco and Panjim being in that list. That ofcourse is my personal opinion. Maybe I have a certain yardstick by which I am measuring what a township should be so why in your books it becomes an exaggeration I have no idea. To be honest I am getting a bit tired and fed-up of internet forums. They seem to be marked by a great desire to prove one's own point at the expense of the other poster. The moment people come onto internet forums they seem to immediately have their ears surgically removed. Any need to listen to another opinion, genuinely listen, without casting some bizarre agenda, calling it a lie, perversion, distortion, exaggeration seems to become an almost impossibility. Then ofcourse there is the need to have the last word. This some have turned into an Olympic sport. Because of this I have long stopped reading 90% of the posts on Goanet. Let's not forget the where your proofers? These people generally will not offer any substantive proof themselves but will generally try to demean others by throwing that question into the works which on the face of it sounds intelligent but is actually borne out of gross stupidity. Best of all, Goan internet forums atleast at the place where NRI bashing becomes an acceptable pastime, cheered on by some hapless, toothless, men who might have found a cybercafe right next to the village tinto. What do NRIs know about Goa? They live else, let's discredit everything they have to say because they aren't earning in rupees. NEver mind that they are Goans who might have spent considerable time periods in Goa, or that they might be discerning individuals with some insight to offer. Nope Sir. If they live beyond Karwar, they have no right to say anything about Goa. Well, to be honest, I think I've had my fill for a while. Sorry all this ended up on your post Sandeep. It is not intended for you. Best, selma
[Goanet] CCP to restore Panaji garden
CCP to restore Panaji garden PANAJI: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) plans to gift the city a restored garden by December 8, to coincide with the feast of the church and is taking the help of the Goa Forest Development Corporation (GFDC) to achieve this. Preliminary work, which includes clearing of bushes, to rebuild the garden was taken up last week and the major work will commence in early November. Deputy mayor Yatin Parekh speaking to TOI said, We wish to give the people of Panaji the garden whose original glory was lost. GFDC will do soft landscaping and set up a facility for sprinkler irrigation at a cost of Rs 57 lakh and also maintain the garden for a year, sources said. The landscaping will include gardening, flowering plants and hedges while lawns will also be laid, sources said. A bandstand is proposed to be erected inside the garden for a cultural interface. A cafetaria and sulabh toilet are also part of the plans. Work on the garden has been at a standstill since 2004. Parekh added that work hadn't been taken up earlier as the CCP was in financial crisis. That is when the GFDC came in. Says CCP consultant and GFDC director Joe D'Souza, I requested the GFDC and CCP to come to an agreement which will be signed any day now after it is cleared by the GFDC chairman. Sources said that the MOU has been cleared by Panaji mayor Carolina Po. Explaining why the GFDC was brought in, D'Souza said, GFDC has created a botanical garden at Selaulim which is world class, so I thought that the GFDC could do this. Instead of inviting private players, it was better to get it done within government agencies. CCP commissioner Elvis Gomes revealed that the estimated budget for the garden's restoration is Rs 2.5 crore. The plan for the garden is to have a paving through the middle with landscaping on all four sides. Buildings on three sides of the garden block out sunlight for most part of the day and some trees may have to be pruned or cut to allow the sun to bathe the garden, but sources could not specify the number. The flowering plants require sunlight or else it will have to be just lawns and hedges, sources said. Various activities like washing of trucks inside the garden would have to be stopped. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/CCP-to-restore-Panaji-garden /articleshow/5161263.cms ~(^^)~ Avelino

[Goanet] Grand mother's remedy
Albert writes:- Dr.Zelio is a famous doctor in GMC. His grandmother's sister lived in socorro .She was like a doctor in her own way and cured many people of severe jaundice with her herbal medicines. Even those who had become completly yellow would get a cure from her herbal medicine but she never disclosed her secret formula to anyone as a result her clinic closed when she died. I remember when my wife had jaundice I took her to one Dr.Naik from Porvorim. He being an allopathy doctor told me to get a particular herb and my wife was completely cured with that herb. Do you know that when we had fever my grandmother would boil water with onions and jeera and we had to dip both our feet and palms to in that boiling water. Next day the fever was gone. When attached with viral fever or flu the best medicine that mom would do was give me bath with adolso leaves and put onion juice on my head and body. My God next two days I was smelling like an onion but within three days the flu had to go. Bronchities or pneumonia would best be cured by putting ventos on your back. An onion ring with a small piece of camphor was placed on your back, the camphor set on fire and covered with an empty glass. One would see the lighted camphor go off and the flesh rise up. Sometimes cotton was inserted in the edge of the glass burnt and dumped on the back. This had one disadvantage. If you were not very alert your back could be burnt. I have been trying this medicine for cold and fever. A piece of ginger is taken and smashed completely and put into four glass water and tulsi leaves added and water is then boiled and cooled. Drink the whole day and tell me. _ Windows 7: Simplify what you do everyday. Find the right PC for you. http://windows.microsoft.com/shop

[Goanet] ANJUNA BHUMIKA DEVI TEMPLE BURGLED
ANJUNA BHUMIKA DEVI TEMPLE BURGLED To the surprise of Gaumvaddy residents, the Bhumika Devi Temple at Sonar Vaddo, Gaumvaddy, Anjuna, was burgled in the wee hours today. The burglary came to light when the sweeper entered the temple at around 6:30 a.m. and noticed broken padlocks lying on the floor. He immediately informed the temple members who live next door. The burglars made their entry into the temple through a small area of tile roof next to the concrete terrace. They removed Mangalore tiles and landed in the corridor of the temple. The temple has one main entrance which is secured by a collapsing steel door; it has three padlocks. There is another collapsing steel door fixed to the back exit door; it also has three padlocks. There are two exits on either side of the temple, which are also fixed with collapsing steel doors. None of these doors or padlocks were broken. In addition, there are several windows on each side of the temple, which are fitted with steel grilles. The main temple altar has two doors – one inner door with wooden frame and iron bars; and one outer collapsing steel door. While the former has one self lock and two padlocks, the latter has five padlocks. They did not break any padlocks of the outer door. However, they forcibly removed part of the collapsing steel door rod from the lower channel, bent it and created a little gap of about 8 inches through which they entered – only a small person could enter through the gap. The space between the outer and inner door is a little over a foot. They meticulously broke the three locks of the inner door and made an entry into main altar area. They removed the gold ornaments from Bhumika Devi and also removed the silver “prabhavar” or arch, which is worth about Rs.2-3 lakhs. They also removed the outer frame from the niche where the Utsav Murti of Bhumika Devi is kept. They then raised the glass and removed gold ornaments from the deity. Furthermore, they broke one of the padlocks of the ‘Fund petti or box’ and took away all the bills – they did not take any coins. The total value of stolen items is approximately Rs.5 lakhs. For the information of readers, the temple is surrounded by houses and it is located only about 25 meters from the main road. Anjuna police were immediately contacted and a formal complaint was lodged; finger prints were taken. They managed to get only one finger print. From the modus operandi, the burglars seem to be professionals. Since none of the doors were broken, the burglars must have exited the temple from the entry point – a stool was used to get to the roof. The temple was robbed once before around twenty five years ago. At that time the snuffer dogs had led the police to a local’s house but he denied robbing it. Surprisingly, within a month the man died without leaving behind any clue of illness, but it was revealed to the family of the deceased that Bhumika Devi had gotten rid of him. -Original Message- From: marlon menezes Toronto (where I once lived) does have pretty good public transportation. As a foreign student (i.e., no parent's car to borrow), it was pretty much a necessity. Still, using it was a bitch - specially in the freezing winters. [Goanet] Art Exhibition: Bernadette Gomes
Bernadette Gomes' art exhibition 'Maadani - Under the Coconut Palms' Where: Institute Menezes Braganza, Panaji, Goa When : October 29 - 31, 2009 - 9am - 7pm Bernadette describes her paintings thus: Each of them is a personal experience brought to life. It's the way in which Goa's folk life has touched mine, shaping me as I grew up. The paintings capture people's practices; a way of life that's fast disappearing. Like the gathering of dried leaves before the monsoon, to light kitchen fires. Like par-boiling paddy at night. Women bathing at the village stream... Others peep into little known aspects of Goa's varied peoples. Like the Meazghor of the pastoral Gouly tribe, a living room-cum-kitchen-cum-store room, made entirely of woven cane. The men dancing the Powo during Dussehra. Or just taking a break as they tend the goats. Fun, frolic and solemnity is portrayed in the Sotryo festival of Cuncolim; the fire walkers at the zatra of Goddess Lairayee at Sirgao; the village church feast... Frederick Noronha states: The details are amazing and, sometimes, like a picture clicked by one of those modern, high-res digital cameras, almost better than life! [Goanet] Ma Ma Ma Ma Baker
Ma Ma Ma Ma Baker Sing along again with Boney M By Cecil Pinto Musically speaking, for my generation in Goa, the period from the mid 1970's right through the mid 1980's was the Boney M era. Every Goan household of that time had to have a Boney M cassette prominently visible near the two- in-one player, or in the Formica covered hall showcase. How Boney M came into being is as very curious story. In December of 1974 a German pop singer named Frank Farian recorded a single, 'Baby Do You Wanna Bump', using a studio enhanced deep male voice and performing the high female chorus vocals in his falsetto voice. The song record came out credited to 'Boney M' after a character in an Australian detective serial Farian was watching at the time. When this song slowly became a hit in North Europe Farian decided to hire a team to 'front' the group for TV performances. Many changes in the team over the next few months led to the final Boney M line-up of three women Maizie Williams, Marcia Barrett, Liz Mitchell and an exotic dancer from Aruba - Bobby Farrell. All this happened in Germany. Their debut album, Take The Heat Off Me, had nothing to do with a certain minister nor does the hit song 'Daddy Cool' have anything to do with the Margao bomb blasts. But let's revisit the lyrics anyway. She's crazy like a fool. What 'bout Narkasur? I'm crazy like a fool. What 'bout Narkasur? Nakka? Narkasur? Nakka? Narkasur? Boney M's 'Daddy Cool' became #1 in Germany in September of 1976 after a live TV performance with their trademark daring costumes. In fact right through their heyday Boney M caused controversy with their rather risqué album covers and sexy live performances. The Boney M 'sound' came into being - consisting of gimmick percussion, alternating answer-back vocals, a spoken part and a deep male voice contrasted with falsetto female voices. Their next album in 1977, Love for Sale, had nothing to do with escort, exotic and erotic services regularly advertised in Goan newspapers. But the original 1930 Cole Porter lyrics, written from the point of view of a prostitute, are worth reading. Love for sale Appetizing young love for sale Love that's fresh and still unspoiled Love that's only slightly soiled Love for sale. If you want the thrill of love I have been through the mill of love Old love New love Every love but true love This same album featured the hit song 'Ma Baker' which featured a popular Tunisian folk tune. The lyrics spoke about the legendary female American gangster Ma Barker whose husband and four sons were all criminals. Sounds like some of our criminal politician families in Goa. They have no conscience or heart as they plunder enough for many generations to come. Freeze, I'm Ma Baker. Put your hands in the air. Gimme all your money! This is the story of Ma Baker - the meanest cat from ol' Chicago town. She was the meanest cat in old Chicago town She was the meanest cat she really mowed them down She had no heart at all no no no heart at all Ma Ma Ma Ma Ma Baker, she taught her four sons Ma Ma Ma Ma Ma Baker, to handle their guns Ma Ma Ma Ma Ma Baker, she never could cry Ma Ma Ma Ma Ma Baker, but she knew how to die Unfortunately in Goa criminal politician sons and daughters and mothers and fathers are all still living. Don't anybody move The money or your lives! Soon after in 1978 Boney M released a cover version of 'Rivers of Babylon'. The song is based on the Biblical hymn Psalm 137, a hymn expressing the yearnings of the Jewish people in exile following the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem in 586 BC. Goan expats all over the world cry crocodile tears on Internet forums and Letters to the Editor for the loss of their beloved Goa. By the rivers of Toronto, there we sat down Ye-eah we wept, when we remembered our Goa. By the rivers of Swindon, there we sat down Ye-eah we wept, when we remembered our Goa. When our greed carried us away, permanently, We thought we could do no wrong Now how shall we sing our Mandos in a strange land Boney M's next album the same year was Nightflight to Venus containing the hit 'Brown Girl in The Ring', a traditional West Indian song. It speaks of a white girl who has been playing in the mud and is dirty. Brown girl in the ring Tra la la la la There's a brown girl in the ring Tra la la la la la la Brown girl in the ring Tra la la la la She looks like a sugar in a plum When she finally washes herself the restaurant and shack owners now welcome her in. She's no longer brown - she's white! The prophetic, for coastal Goans, album also had the song 'Rasputin'. Ra-Ra-Ramponkar Lover of the Russian skin Sold your land for a few roubles Ra-Ra-Ramponkar Prostrate yourself on the silver sands Sell your souls in one generation . Oh, those Russians This was followed in the spring of 1979 by 'Hooray! Hooray! It's A Holi-Holiday', based on an American folksong Polly Wolly Doodle. It is the theme song for
Re: [Goanet] Goanet Digest, Vol 4, Issue 11285. Re: Goanet Digest, Vol 4, Issue 1121 (manuel tavares)
My Dear Mr. Manuel (Eddie) Tavares, Go ahead ! I cannot stop you from preaching hate as you have the freedom of speech as much as I have . But I can certainly differ from your claims of being the Sole voice of Goans as not all we Goans agree with your views. I certainly do not subscribe to your Hate speech , As a worldly wise person would have been through each and every posting of mine. You will realize that what I have been saying is Violence or hate speeches are no solution to your problems , get down to working .!!! Firstly : Stop! your own fellow Goans from leaving Goa for other lands. Second : Retain them by creating opportunities / Making them realize the opportunities that lie in Goa itself. That others find opportunities in Goa while your own fellow Goans are leaving show that your preachings have either fallen on deaf years or your own fellow Goans don't agree with your line of thinking ( migration is the law) or do not love Goa enough! Lastly : If you have achieved pts. 1 and 2 above . Your won't find Ghatis ( Migrants) in Goa.(There would be too many Goans and no place for Ghati's) I do not believe in your speeches as no religion preaches Violence. If your argument Christ did not say that you have to give away your skin and eventually your body and let your adversary walk all over you were to hold true Christ would not have chose to die on the Cross , but being the son of God Would have freed himself and thought his tormentors a lesson just as you preach 'you do not have to give away your skin and eventually your body and let your adversary walk all over you' ( Accepting Christ as the son of God is the corner stone of Christianity) If I used the example of Christ it was because of the Disgusting Grunting that has been going on under the guise of ' Goa was better under Portuguese rule' Some of you even cry about the change in demography , Hindus taking over Christian dominated areas , FORGETTING THE FACT THAT YOUR ANCESTORS WERE ALL HINDUS . So disgusting has been the attitude , that you had articles on Christian having Hindu names. An intelligent mind would have at once grasped the message in my post all the while.Love Sacrifice is the essence of all religions ' If the BJP RSS find no takers for their Hinduttva cry it is because they have misled the people on the issue of Ram Rajya which they claim they want to establish . Sri. Rams Rajya / Life is based on the following. 1) Sacrifice of ones self for the sake of ones family.( When Sri. Ram went into the forest , in exile ) 2) Sacrifices of one self for the sake of ones people (Praja / country)( when he took Samadhi) Neither me , nor you , nor any of our politicians nor Religious mouth pieces are capable of achieving this. If you cannot not have such a leader then you can have neither the Kingdom of Christ nor Ram Rajya ! So why preach if we cannot practice ! Its would serve Goans better if more work was done than just empty hate speeches were propagated or else we may end up as Empty vessels which make the most sound and finally lose our land to your Ghati's. [Goanet] Talking Photos: Some dirty Panjim Pics
Date: Sun, 25 Oct 2009 10:36:51 +0530 From: Cecil Pinto cecilpi...@gmail.com Is the correct phrasing 'on the Altinho' or 'at Altinho'? Mario observes: Cecil, Residents of Altinho enjoy a sort of lofty status, if you know what I mean, with pun intended:-)) Its a crying shame that some shameless government bureaucrat decided to build the ugliest building in all of Goa at its peak, the PWD Office. From Altinho the Panjim aristocracy that Selma belongs to can look down on the unwashed proletariat in the teeming streets below:-)) I loved Panjim when the Portuguese occupiers ran the place with an iron fist, and I love Panjim now that I am a part-time Ponjekar. It was an exotic colonial backwater then; it is vibrant and charming still, more so than most of India. And, scr., ...er, to heck with, those who disagree with me:-)) I think most Goanetters have no clue what the rest of India has become. However, all it will take to clean up Panjim again is electing the right administration. Whatever one thought of Manohar Parrikar back in the early 2000s, he had pretty much succeeded in making it Panjim Shining. The place was veritably spotless in those days. Now, even Babush has to look down from the elegant Monserrate Palace II on kachra strewn along Miramar beach.
[Goanet] BRITISH UNITED INDIA AND HINDUS.

Mario wrote: My response was that Goa only seemed like a Christian dominated area because of the Christian's who had invaded it and occupied it for 450 years.? We know for sure this benefited Goan Christians far more than Goan Hindus as a generality. Date: Sat, 24 Oct 2009 10:44:05 -0400 From: MD mmdme...@gmail.com Why blame the Portuguese? They did not invade Goa. Mario responds: When I read stuff like this I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Yo Mario, When Portuguese were invited into Goa, who was ruling Goa? I think you do not know the meaning of Invasion and Occupation. What about the others, the French, the Dutch, The English? I think you need a whole lot of refresher course. For your information, some claim India is even now ruled by foreigner: Read this: Our nation is controlled by Antonia Maino, the daughter of an Italian Fascist who came in through the backdoor. Her involvement in Bofors, smuggling of antiques from India to her Italian shops is well known. In Manmohan Singh she got the ultimate pliable PM. Manmohan is an ISI agent who permitted the opening of the ISI bank BCCI in India. Opus Dei and ISI in a combined operation killed Sankararaman and Sonia framed Kanchi Seer to defame Hindus so that christians can convert Hindus. http://anandkumar1978.blogspot.com/2006_01_01_archive.html See, I too can say what ever I feel like, but is the truth? Leave your one upmanship and discuss matters rationally, but before that I think you need to something, take a whole lot of refresher course on World history, American History, current Native American Status and then we will talk. It may take you a couple of years, but no sweat. MD
[Goanet] For Rs. 50,000/- they killed 4 persons
FN writes: In your view, what are the options that youth here could be offered a chance to fulfil their aspirations, without necessarily thinking polluting industry, out-migration or crime? Just curious to see what the other thoughts on this issue are... Very good point. There are no easy ways in today's India to make Rs. 50,000/- for most people. 1) Way one: study till 12 th; do very well in 12 th so as to get into engineering or medicine. Spend 4 or more years. Then, get a job that perhaps pays you Rs. 20,000/- max. 2) Way two: Start a business and invest. This requires lakhs so the option is out for most. 3) Way three: do some graduation which is again 12 + 3 years. Then, use your contacts/ pay some bribe to get a govt. job. Now, if these guys had not done well at SSC, their only option would be to say go for an ITI and become a plumber, welder, what not. Then, you start a business doing these things I guess. How much a plumber / welder gets? Unless the guy bags a big-time contract, just about a hand to mouth existence is possible I guess. 4) Do an MBA after 15 years of becoming a grad. At the end of it, you may get a job, depending on the market and the institute you did your MBA from. So, basic conclusion is that in today's India, for all its shining glory, it is tough to make Rs. 50,000/-. Why people are going for crime there is indeed a reason behind it. samir
