[Goanet] Release of Another Goa (Margao, Monday, Nov 16, 2009)

2009-11-13 Thread Frederick Noronha
Dear Goanetter,

Just a few lines to share with you the news about the upcoming release
of my book, called 'Another Goa' (Broadway and Goa,1556, Pp 192,
2009). This book contains some of my favourite work on Goa, and is
being released on Monday, November 16, 2009 at a function on National
Press Day at the Ravindra Bhavan Margao.

I am grateful to Goanet for encouraging my growth as a writer and
enabling me to get feedback (both positive and importantly critical
too). This network has also helped spur me on to focus more on a Goa
where the returns in mainstream journalism can otherwise be
disencouraging.

Thank you warmly for being part of this journey.

The cover of the book -- done artistically by Bina Nayak -- is visible
online here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fn-goa/4090272550/
or http://www.facebook.com//photo.php?pid=2663324id=502514643

Regards and hoping to see you if you're around Margao! FN

PS: The National Press Day function begins at 10 am, with a talk by
noted journalist P. Sainath, and a panel discussion. The book release
should be later in the morning.

[Goanet] Wanted Urgently:Panchayat Pre-Election Pledge!

2009-11-13 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
*Wanted Urgently:Panchayat Pre-Election Pledge!**
*While our MLAs are more than eager to take away the rights of the panch
members, the panch members are equally keen to divest themselves of their
responsibilities towards members of the Gram Sabha.

All over Goa we hear stories about pandemonium at Gram Sabha meetings where
the discussion is more often than not a shouting and insulting match between
the panch members and the people of the village. The elected panch members
appear to forget that they are also sons and daughters of the village and as
the cause of this timely amnesia is well known there is no need for
elaboration. What is more important is to send a clear message to all panch
members in Goa today that they will not be able to betray the people who
elect them after they are elected and get away with it. All panches who are
going to stand proudly for panchayat elections in future should be made to
sign a pre-election pledge where they have to make a sacred commitment not
to go against any majority decision of the villagers in the interest of the
village. Although this pledge is not legally binding it gives the ward
members a moral right to take their panch to task, as well as to apply
considerable non-violent pressure for breach of trust. Anyone, of course,
who does not sign the pre-election pledge is not trustworthy and should be
declared as one.

The elected panchas show us the nice side of their face prior to panchayat
elections and the other side once they are elected. The humble and meek
panch with the friendly smile then becomes a sly and arrogant fox after he
is elected. This has to stop in the interest of the village, and Goa, too.
The panchyat pre-election pledge provides the necessary brakes. Long live
democracy!

Samir Umarye

BICHOLIM, NOV 12
A leopard attacked a dog at Wavti-Bicholim on Wednesday night, creating
panic among the villagers.
According to villagers, the leopard strayed near the house of one Anil
Govekar at Wavti and tried to attack a dog sleeping outside the house.
“First, we heard the dog barking. Later, we heard the cries of our dog and
sensing some danger, I decided to go outside,” Govekar told Herald.
“As I went out, I saw the leopard trying to carry away our dog by his
throat,” informed Govekar.
“The leopard was successful in pulling the dog almost 100 mtrs away from the
house and when I flashed the light from the battery, the leopard ran away
leaving his prey,” said Govekar.
Govekar also informed that since last some days, there were cases of dogs
missing in the area.
It may be recalled that last year, leopards had created terror in Vawti,
Vathadev and Naiginim in Bicholim taluka and the forest department was
successful in catching some leopards.
Meanwhile, due to the incident there is an atmosphere of panic among the
villagers in the area.

Re: [Goanet] Non Resident Goans

2009-11-13 Thread Frederick Noronha
2009/11/12 lyrawmn lyra...@yahoo.com:
The Government of Goa's message and inducements are unmistakable:
 Leave Goa, women and men.
Toil, but send home to Goa the fruits of your sweat.
We give your children scholarships and subsidies; we will offer specializeded
training and placement for you to find work outside Goa.
 Just send home your money.
Instead of retaining and investing in the workforce by job creation at home.
And directing educational aid and opportunities to children and families of
resident Goans where it is needed.
To increase the living standard and prosperity of all resident Goans for
 present and future generations.

Dear I. Nunes,

The alternative interpretation could be:

The Government of Goa has no single coherent message, or even a
comprehensive understanding of the situation.
It is willing to pander to the migration-virus that Goans have long
suffered from.
It is unable to take up the more difficult tasks -- of building local
talent, boosting creativity (Samir's recent points are valid) -- and
instead opts to take the easy way out.
Besides, one arm of the Goa government doesn't know (or cxare about)
what the other is doing. Education being imparted is quite out of sync
with the kinds of jobs available. And so on. The NRI study probably
reflects more the perspective of the current NRI Commissioner, rather
than that of any any present or past chief minister or Cabinet.
It may be not fair to blame anyone for encouraging migration, but it
might be apt to say that 'planning' in Goa means just riding any wave
that comes one's way -- whether it's the unpredicted pharma boom,
charter tourism (despite its problems) and so on.
After the NRI debate, the activist-priest Fr Bismark was making the
point about Goa promoting migration. My protest was that (i) we
Goans -- specially Catholic Goans -- seem to have a migration-virus
which cannot be fought till we migrate (ii) it's all well for returned
Goenkars, ex-migrants themselves, to critique the process of
out-migration!

 Who elected these bozos?

Where were you bozos when we bozos elected these bozos under a bozo
electoral system which you presume is meant to serve the interest of
the common(wo)man? :-)

 One more thing:
Is Goa really more expensive than say Mumbai (with one of the costliest sq.
footage space, on par with Hong Kong and Tokyo) or even Bangalore?
 best,
 I. Nunes

I was not talking real estate; nor do I have precise figures to back
up this point. But take the price of a humble rice-plate and you'll
probably agree with me. The fish-curry-rice which I paid Rs 5 for in
1987 today costs Rs 40! Markets in Goa are costlier than in many other
locations too... Maybe others could add or counter this point of view.

Re: [Goanet] Love For Goa And Konkanni Is Synonymous

2009-11-13 Thread Edward Verdes

Freddy Bab,

Well said, but you got your facts wrong as far as Mumbaikars Goans are
concerned.

No catholic Mumbaikar Goan speaks Marathi or Hindi in their homes..It is
mostly
English and Konkani. Most of the goans I know speak Konkani at
home..specially the elderly folks
but are shy to speak when they meet other Goemcars for social
gatherings...my mother in law only speaks
Konkani, my wife born and brought up in Mumbai speaks Konkani as well...Most
Mumbaikars
children understand Konkani but may not be fluent in speaking. In Goan Kudds
it is only

Konkani and no English...even the meetings are held in Konkani..
Hindi or Marathi is spoken only to others communities.

Love For Goa And Konkanni Is Synonymous

Goans say that their Mother Tongue is Konkanni, but for
some unknown reasons, Goans in Mumbai prefer to speak in Marathi, Hindi or
English but not in Konkani, the Goan Diaspora spread all over the world,
proudly

speak in English, most of them don't even acknowledge that Konkanni is their
Mother Tongue, worse still are the educated Goans in Goa, who prefer to
speak in

English rather than in Konkanni, what are we trying to prove ? What are we
trying to show ? We say we are Goans and we love Konkanni but when it come
to

proving it, we fall way short in our commitment towards Konkanni.

From what I can gather, it was Prabhkar Sinari et al who, in the middle of the

As to limited recreation, perhaps the author of that article did not like a
more sedate evening after the relatively hard day's work :-)  Shouts of
Diar-Noich (Diario da Noite was the evening paper), Sort Sort - falean

This an interesting article in memory to the few such public squares in Asia. I
remember Guna the barber and his newspapers. The senior librarian carefully
sidesteps the forced removal of the bust of Vasco da Gama by the current
colonial ruler of our land besides, he lacks the guts to tell the reader who
built the square and has the audacity to tell us 'it happened after
liberation'.

[Goanet] Diesel Scam in RND/Ferry Boat Dept?

2009-11-13 Thread JoeGoaUk
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk21/3812899328/

Diesel Scam in RND Dept?

Believe me or not!
After going through the shocking revelation (Herald Edit, see quoted),
I had decided to go to Cortalim jetty and check myself.

Today evening, we went there only to ascertain
as to how many trips a ferry boat can make as per the schedule timings.

First Ferry boat leaves Cortalim at 6am and the last at 9.10pm
Each Ferry boat can make maximum of 31 trips as per the schedule
So two ferries would be 62 strips per day
Annually it would be about  22,320

But RND (River Navigation Dept) claimed 42,340 trips
during the last year.
(in an reply to a RTI by an NGO from Madkai)

So, what’s going on here?
Multi-Crore scam?
Diesel pilferage?
Choramchem Raj?

In most cases, the total should be less than the scheduled trips as most
ferries breakdown
(which is quite common with RND’s ailing ferries).

Trips schedule
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk6/4098390877/
(see edit. below the pic)

At Panjim-Betim, we very rarely see two ferries.
At least there should be two ferries during peak hours e.g. 6pm-730pm
We see only one overloaded ferry plying day and night.

Again, First ferry leaving at Betim at 6am and last at 9.45pm
From Panjim,  it is  6.15am 10pm respectively.
As per the schedule, it shows 41+41 strips = 82 trips
It appears that even with just one ferry boat, it can run as per the schedule.
Thus making the scheduled trips all 82.
It takes about 5 minutes each way.

After our trip to Cortalim, we took the ferryboat ‘Colva’ from Panjim to Betim
which left around 9.34pm.
Arrived Betim at around 9.40pm and the same ferry left Betim at 945pm arrived
Panjim around 950pm
And it will leave Panjim (last trip) at 10pm.

Panjim-Betim Ferry timings
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk6/4098465369/

Also, we often see only one ferry plying at  Rai-Shiroda, near Rachol Church.

Shortest, distanced ferry crossing, I would say Carona-Calvim
which takes less than 2 minutes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04cRQscIL4M

Similar Scam (diesel pilferage, if any) in KTC cannot be ruled out.

ON PRINCE JACOB:
I was crying bitterly at the death of my father and suddenly, I heard the
audience
laugh, recalling a scene from Roseferns' Akant (one of his early dramas) he
says,
From that instant I realized that the audience expected only comedy from me.
Several laughter filled years later, Antonio Pereira crowned Minguel Jacob
Carmo
Luis Fernandes, the Prince of Comedy after a laugh-riot role in Tapot – hence
was
born Prince Jacob.

It began at a tender age of 13 for the then Don Bosco Oratory student when late
Rosario Dias introduced him in Chuk Hanvench Adarli, ever since, there was no
looking back, recalling his Oratory days he remembers his mentor Fr. Henry
Torra,
who instilled a certain discipline in him and bro, Felix who imparted valuable
tips
in composing songs and skits. A front runner in singing, acting and debates,
Jacob
owes his success as an able orator to teacher, Fatima Rebello who shaped him up
initially.

They say it is dangerous to give a mike to an orator and the dog, a bone,
laughs
Jacob. The keen interest for tiatrs was developed in the formative years. I
used to
accompany the late Souza Ferrao for his plays and manage to get a free entry
for his
tiatrs. Ferrao was encouraging and even introduced Jacob to Melody King, late
Alfred Rose, who predicted potential in him. Late Jacinto Vaz Charlie Chaplin
of
Konkani stage gave his budding career the necessary thrust by constant
encouragements.

Jacob's young talent was then tapped by star directors like Ligorio Fernandes
and
Roseferns an in 1985, teaming up with brother Humbert and Milagres he
established,
Prince Jacob Production. In his initial days, Jacob was known for directing
tiatrs
beginning with the alphabet P, I did 25 tiatrs right from Pinzrem to Padri,
while
one tiatr was being staged my audience would suggest the title of my next
venture,
he recalls. After exhausting P he went on to R with Rodonaka.

Today he commands a dedicated fan following not just in Goa but across India,
Gulf
States UK. To tiatr loving Goans spresd over the world, Prince Jacob
represents a
vibrant brand ambassador of contemporary tiatrs. A serious actor who graduated
to
comedy, Jacob is a born entertainer, To have the ability to provoke laughter
is a
God-given talent. He says. I thank God as I feel I have helped the audience
in
putting their sorrows away, Jacob reveals saying if he wasn't a tiatrist he
could
have been a priest.

Jacob has dared to bring bold innovations to tiatrs – from making a Doberman
act in
Pavnnek, doing magic in Raza Raani and four roles in Rupnem – based on the
Marathi
hit-play Sahi-re-Sahi. Jacob took his entire star cast to Mumbai to watch it
before
doing his Konkani adaptation and he watched it 12 times. Jacob's works included
16
centuries in tiatrs which have been appreciated by his countless fans who have
helped him bag awards like Goa Post, Gulab and Kala Academy. Recently, Jacob is
ruling the air waves through Big FM 92.7 as its celebrity RJ. I have entered
people's hearts through tiatrs, now I want to enter their homes, says the
producer
of 11 audio releases.

Jacob feels, as a tiatrist can be very exhausting when you are an actor,
writer,
producer and director, and to elucidate the dilemma to his children, Jacob
introduced his eldest daughter Jewel Valankanni in Passport and recently son
Jason
in Viswas. Now Emerald is beginning to realize that it may be her next, he
says of
his youngest daughter. Apart from tiatrs, Jacob has also produced Padri – a
film
that has so far been screened 315 times – it ran for a record two months (4
shows
daily) at Margao and two weeks in Panjim, and also one show each in State of
Bahrain
Kuwait. His other VCDs on St. Francis Xavier and Fr. Jose Vaz have also been
well
received.

In his latest, Zaiat Zage, Jacob is giving a clarion call to Goans to wake-up
and
defend Goa. I foresee what will happen ahead and portray it in my script, he
says.
it's a must for

Re: [Goanet] Veteran's Day: Goans who laid down their lives (response to FN)

2009-11-13 Thread Nascy Caldeira
Hello Frederick and Goanet readers,

--- On Thu, 12/11/09, Frederick Noronha fredericknoro...@gmail.com wrote:
Nascy, the rest of your post was very
 interesting... but I thought the
statement below came with some inbuilt bias.

Christian Goans were socially advanced, in that they
had no taboos and other superstitions about eating
  or handling food that the British and westerners ate;
and that is the reason they were employed in
large numbers on variuos Ships at the time, and
  EVEN NOW.

Nascy replies:
Frederick, I do not see how u can talk of 'inbuilt bias', on this matter. I am
only stating a fact regarding peoples' social advancement. This particular
advancement albeit 'enlightenment' in this matter of taboos and superstitious
beliefs, is what qualified many of the enlightened persons to
jobs and careers with the respect of and accommodation by the 'employers' and
'the ruling elite of the time'. It was only fair that people clinging on to
weird beliefs and taboos were unsuccessful in such endeavours that the Goan,
Mangalorean and Bombay Christians excelled and be rewarded! This is the gist of
my statement.

If at all, it is the un enlightened primitive beliefs' poeople that are biased
against social progress. Man has to progress from primitive to modern. Social
interaction within any society or with other societies needs to change as 'Man'
advances thru the milleniums! Keeping up with the times as well as integrating
with various societies and cultures within India and around the world as well,
is the 'way to go' forward and 'progress'.
I hope U will now say that I have 'inbuilt bias' for Progress! and against
clinging to ancient primitive superstitious ways and beliefs that are counter
productive, and DO lead to many other problems and Conflict.

Frederick:
We could always see situations we like and claim that these
are indicators of being socially advanced (whatever such a
 construct means).

Nascy:
Education (not necessarily formal) and enlightenment from 'ignorance' helps to
'see, not just look' and 'listen, not just hear' at discerning indicators of
social advencement.

Frederick:
Could we point to the Christian Goan hang-ups over
sexuality, their tendency to get involved in intense litigation or their
weekly attendance of Sunday mass as a sign of being socially
 advanced?

Nascy:
What hangups over 'sexuality'? It is 'live and let Live'; not a hangup!
Attendence at Sunday Mass is a religious undertaking, and is a common behavior
among Christians and does not come in the way of others, nor does it restrict
one's freedoms.
Unwarranted litigation is what U are reffering to; then it is just that; and is
not confined to Chritian Goans, or any other sect; it is universal: The lawyers
and advocates are the cause of this! Else they would be unemployed! Law and
Litigation are any time better than Violence and Murder,Bombs and
Trisuls,Fatwahs and Jihad and all that primitive nonsense being paraded as
Culture and or Religion.

Frederick:
I think different communities are just that... different
from one another. We can see each for what they are, a mix of
diverse preferences and backgrounds. It could be argued that a
community is 'socially advanced' and enlightened because it chooses (more
 environmentally sustainable and kinder-to-the-animals) vegetarian
diet. But that would be as realistic as the argument above.

Nascy:
I agree with part of what U are implying here! Provided these norms are 'not
imposed or forced' on others, thru 'Bans, segregation and apartheid like
methods! That is again primitive!.

What about kinder to some animals and not others??
Some 'primitive' societies worship 'some' animals and others they slaughter and
eat! Then there are some 'Human Animals' that these same people, despise and
subjugate. Casteism and like thought is not advancement, U will agree with me I
know!

Frederick:
At last count, my dentist was mentioning that the Goan
Christian has teeth problem due to the consumption of vinegar. (Fact is,
I hardly consume vinegar!) But the jury is still out whether that
comment came because of established research or because a
you-should-be-like-us tendency all of us have encoded in us!

Nascy:
The above is what YOU are saying. I am not commenting on that. This is more in
the field of Science and scientific Medicine. Santosh who is patronisingly
scientific or some good qualified Dentist should be helping U here!
Frederick: Thanks again for your other, though-provoking inputs. FN
Nascy: Thanks from me too! It's been nice 'talking' to you on goanet!

Nascy Caldeira.

[Goanet] Wanted Urgently: Panchayat Pre-Election Pledge!

Long live
democracy!

Re: [Goanet] Questioning the conventional wisdom on global warming

2009-11-13 Thread Mario Goveia
Date: Tue, 10 Nov 2009 20:18:19 -0800 (PST)
From: marlon menezes goa...@yahoo.com

It looks like Mario gets his inspiration from Iran's Ahmednijad's school of
thought. The latter claims that there was no holocaust. Given that only 0.2% of
the world's population was eradicated in the gas chambers, I guess it is easy
for both Mario and Ahmednijad to assume that such small fractions are
inconsequential!

Mario observes:

After trying to confuse cyanide with CO2, Marlon, who gets his inspiration from
Al Gore and Michael Moore and habitually tries to intimidate members with
personal attacks and bald faced distortions of their positions, now tries
another analogy that is equally bogus.  This is the same gentleman who pretends
to be a libertarian but is seen here desperately pushing for a takeover of the
world's economies by a small cabal of self-serving environmental elites.

Marlon still hasn't explained how the 0.036% of CO2 in the earth's atmosphere
is going to decline when man-made CO2 is only estimated to be 0.013% of the
atmosphere, with the balance 0.023% created by Mother Nature, and so many of
the world's fastest growing economies are unwilling to participate in
destroying their economic growth.  How is regressing only the western economies
while the others continue business as usual going to make any difference to
man-made CO2.  Marlon conveniently ignores such details deflecting attention
with his trademark off-topic bluster.

While Marlon desperately mangles facts and logic with inappropriate analogies
with cyanide and Ahmadinejad, here is an example of how nonsensical are the
prescriptions actively being pursued by his fellow extremists in the American
Democrat party - courtesy George Will in the November 16, 2009 issue of
Newsweek.

Legislation proposed by the Democrat party in the US calls for reducing
greenhouse gas emissions - essentially CO2 - to 83% below 2005 levels by 2050.
This would amount to 1 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions according to
analysts at the American Enterprise Institute think tank.  The last time the US
had that small an amount was in 1910, when there were only 92 million
Americans, 328 million fewer than the 420 million projected for 2050.

To meet the 1 billion tons of greenhouse gas target in a nation of 420 million,
per capita CO2 emissions would have to be no more than 2.4 tons per person,
which is one quarter the per capita emissions of 1910, a level probably last
seen when the population was 45 million, which was in 1875.

Remember, the US and the western economies are the economic engine for the
economies of the rest of the world.  What will happen to the less developed
economies if the environmental extremists succeed in letting a small number of
self-appointed charlatans at the UN's IPCC squeeze the western economies down
to the levels they are proposing?

Does this make sense to any rational person interested in the development of
the entire planet?

For another look what is really going on, see the following article in a recent
edition of The Wall Street Journal:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125686509223717691.html

Finally, I would like to thank Marlon for providing these opportunities to give
Goanetters a factual look behind the conventional orthodoxy they are mostly
exposed to, especially in India, and to the illogical policy prescriptions of
the UN's IPCC.  This is now all being challenged by the emergence of some
inconvenient and embarrassing facts that draw attention to the questionable
information they have been insisting is accurate even though it was based on
unverifiable mathematical models of the future, which we now have been wrong
for the last DECADE.

[Goanet] India Untouches by K. Stalin

2009-11-13 Thread SHRIKANT BARVE
Press Note

The International Centre Goa and Moving Images will be screening K Stalin’s
award wining documentary India Untouched on November 21st at 6.30 p.m. at the
International Centre Goa. The screening is open to the public and will be
followed by a discussion with the director K Stalin.

‘INDIA UNTOUCHED- Stories of a People Apart” (108 minutes. Multi linugual with
with English sub-titles, Directed by Stalin K., Produced by Drishti and
Navsarjan) is the most comprehensive look at the “untouchables” in India.
Motivated by ancient religious edicts, no amount of governmental encouragement
has been able to stem the tragic custom that separates human beings according
to their birth. Those considered untouchable suffer more than isolation, they
are forced to fulfill menial tasks in their communities, drink from separate
containers, remove their shoes on the street as a sign of respect and perform
or exhibit many other outward signs of their perceived inferiority. While the
media projects a positive image of a democratic India, filmmaker Stalin K spent
four years traveling the country across many linguistic boundaries to expose
the continued oppression of the Dalits, “the broken people,” in a wide variety
of communities, including
 Sikhs, Christians and Muslims.

Stalin also captures in subtle ways the everyday routine events in which
untouchability comes to be practiced and reproduced. In so doing the audiences
are left wondering if they too are almost with their conscious knowledge are
covertly colluding with this humiliating discrimination.

Stalin K is a human rights activist and award-winning documentary filmmaker. In
recent years, he has become known for his pioneering ‘community media’ work
with urban and rural communities, in which local people produce their own
videos and radio programs as an empowerment tool. He is the Co-Founder of
DRISHTI- Media, Arts and Human Rights, and Convener of the Community Radio
Forum-India. He is a renowned public speaker and has lectured or taught at
over 50 institutions ranging from the National Institute of Design and the Tata
Institute of Social Sciences in India, to New York University and Stanford and
Berkeley in the US. He currently lives in Goa and heads Video Volunteers, a
media and human rights organization dedicated to empowering community voices.

‘INDIA UNTOUCHED’ is Stalin’s second film on the issue of caste—his earlier
film ‘Lesser Humans,’ on manual scavenging, won the Silver Conch at the Mumbai
International Film Festival and the Excellence Award at Earth Vision Film
Festival, Tokyo, and helped to bring international attention to the issue of
caste.

2009-11-13 Thread floriano

Dear Freddy,

As always, I admire your write-ups.

I choose to comment on this one because you have chosen to say that 'our
Indian democracy most certainly has an

incurable cancer'.

Corruption alas has been the bane of Indian Political system right from
Pandit J. Nehru's time when Nehru failed to bring to book his close friend
and associate, the then defence minister Krishna Menon in the first ever
Jeeps scandal in the Independent India. If Nehru had own- up on his
responsibility to the nascent biggest democracy in the world in cauterizing
corruption at that time, Goa would not have been invaded to safe-guard the
electoral prospects of Krishna Menon.

But again, to contrast the above, if Narashima Rao had not indulged in
purchasing the required numbers of MPs from JMM at the cost of crores of
rupees, he would have not been able to form the government and give India
the economic wizard in Manmohan Singh. If this had not happened, India would
have sunk to the bottom long before Kodas of the day could rip us
shamelessly for thousands of crores of rupees. And talking of Narashima Rao,
I have always wondered as to how a cadre RSS like him could have become the
Congress Prime Minister of India. This is the reason that I have gone on
record many times of saying that the Congress is far from being secular. It
is worst than the Communal BJP. Perhaps, with this disclosure, Narashima Rao
and the lot of late Congress stalwarts will be turning in their graves or
where ever they may be :-))

India, and more particularly, Goa urgently needs the 'Budwig Diet' to cure
this corruption cancer that is taking Goa to the terminal point of no
return. Goa needs a systemic change in governance which only Goa Su-Raj
Party can deliver. When the blood that runs into Goa's bloodstream has
turned into poison, the onliest way to undo the damage and prevent the
ultimate catastrophe is to give total transfusion of clean blood. None of
Goa's political parties can do this, now, or a decade hence. And by that
time Goa will be dead and gone if Goa Su-Raj Party is ignored and made fun
of. Apart from the poisoned blood, every organ, every joint and sinew in
Goa's body is working for itself unmindful of Goa itself.

Our Politicians and Corruption

If sex is synonymous with glamour, then corruption too is synonymous with
politics in India today. Politics is no more a virtuous profession that it
once
was, but an easy means towards money, power and position. Our politicians
will
spend any amount of money to get a ticket and then win an election by any
means,
fair or foul. Once elected the money spent, is recovered in record time.
Even

as Cricket, which was supposed to be a gentleman's game has acquired the
viability and commerciality of a race course, politics has acquired the
viability and the thrills of a casino, wherein jackpots are hit as per the
ministries they are affiliated to, which in fact lubricate the silent wheels
of

World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims*
*--
As a concluding part of its Childrens Road Safety Traffic
Management Awareness Fortnight being observed alongwith
the village based Consumer Forums and campus based
Consumer Welfare Clubs which includes Children's Day
the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims,
GOACAN is observing a remembrance day from 5pm on
Saturday 14th November to 5pm Sunday 15th November.

Worldwide, almost 4,000 people are killed and many
hundreds of thousands injured every day on the road.
These figures are predicted to grow. The price in terms
of human loss, grief and care is immeasurable. Road
crashes are the leading cause of violent deaths and injuries
worldwide and the World Day of Remembrance is
drawing attention to the scale of this global disaster.

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims
was initiated by RoadPeace in 1993 in the United Kingdom.
Since then it has been observed and promoted worldwide
by several NGOs and this is now globally recognised.

On 26 October 2005, the United Nations endorsed it as a
global day to be observed every third Sunday in November
each year. WHO and the United Nations Road Safety
Collaboration encourages Governments and NGOs around
the world to commemorate this day. This will be a major
advocacy day for road traffic injury prevention and as an
appropriate acknowledgement for victims of road traffic
crashes and their families.

In Goa over 300 deaths take place every year of men,
women and children due to Road Accidents which means
there is one death almost every 28 hours. In this connection,
GOACAN is organising a gathering of remembrance on
Saturday 14th November at the Mermaid Garden near
GTDC Residency in Panjim from 5pm - 7.30pm.

Through this gathering GOACAN hopes to ensure that the
impact of Road Deaths and injuries will be better understood
and the causes of the same would be addressed urgently.

GOACAN appeals to citizens to join-in this gathering of
remembrance in Panjim on Saturday 14th November and
bring along a candle, a banner and a message poster if any.

We should have a similar musuem memorial in Goa to honour the lives of

Oil states and China are now buying agricultural land across poorer

Mugabe banana dollars may not fetch you a berry, but things are a little
different at the US Mint.  If their 'virtual' currency is a wear-proof plastic

[Goanet] Hail Fundamentalists!

2009-11-13 Thread soter

The government must keep the Sanathan and other militant religious
fundamentalists alive just like USA needs the excuse of the Al-Quaeda to
intrude into Asia. What would have been the fate of politicians and political
outfits in this country if the religous fundamentalists did not exist since
independence? We need to eliminate the maoists and the naxalites at any cost
because they remind us of the harsh reality - the rich and poor divide and
exploitation - and they are a hindrance to the rich man's ( (politicians
included) greed for exploiting the natural resources in the north-east. The
maoists and naxalites cannot be prefered to religous fundamentalists because
they (naxalites and maoists) keep on embarassing the rich of this country by
keeping alive the fact that there are millions of oppressed and exploited in
this country.
We definitely need the religious fundamentalist outfits and they should not be
banned without sufficient evidence of their terror activities. After all how
can we be so ungrateful and forget the great contributions of these religious
fanatics in independent India who have helped in the polarisation of vote
banks? And how will Digambar Kamat and the plundering forces distract the
people of Goa from the mass land conversions, destructions of forests and
agricultural land, corruption and mega construction, if religious fanatics do
not kill themselves with country bombs and heighten communal passions by
desecrating temples? How will Digambar Kamat and band of 40 jolly politicians
keep the people of Goa entertained if the most emotive issue of religion is
capped once and for all. If religious divide does not exist in Goa, how will
the real estate lobby justify their claim that it is the church which is
instigating the anti-development agitations because the christians are getting
out numbered in Goa? If a few more temples and churches are not desecrated,
politicians would find it extremely difficult to distract the public from the
on-going destruction of Goa and would lose their vote banks.
Just as Voltaire had said that if there was no God man would have to create
one, similarly if there were no religious fanatics the politicians and the
capitalist forces would need to invent them. So Manohar Parrikar, Digambar
Kamat and Ravi Naik are well justified in their war over the Sanathan. We need
the Togadia, Modi, Tytler, Patil and Godse to keep Goa burning so that people
can be entertained with candle light processions, Jagran rally's and newspaper
debates while even greater violence against Goa's environment and Goans can be
continued by the politicians and exploitative forces. One can well imagine how
politically explosive Goa would have been if a religious divide did not exist.
India's pre-emergency era of the early seventies is a witness to the extent of
political tremors that shook this country when all forces joinned hands,
forcing the government to declare an emergency. Instead of banning these
religous fundamentalist outfits, politicians cutting across party lines need
to honour the religious fanatics for their role played in securing political
stability, political distraction and the political future of a bunch of rascals.

Ummm ... so what is the wedding photographer to do?

I think in the interests of brevity, the notice is kept to its essentials.
IMHO, what the sign wants to say, is, Do not photograph persons unkown to you,
who might object to being photographed.  People in prayer often reflect
emotions in their contenance, and it is photographing this stituation that
people object to, as it invades their privacy. Respect for the other party is
all that is required.

Just as many people take symbolic writing literally, so also, it appears
that certain guardians of the premises also take their notices literally :-).

In any case, if one wants to photograph anything, notice or no notice, I think
it is polite to request the permission of the owner or guardian of the

[Goanet] Indian Football Federation-Kuwait adds a new chapter

2009-11-13 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
IFF added a new chapter by organizing the matches on the artificial pitch (Turf)

Indian Football Federation Kuwait – IFF added a new chapter by organizing the
matches on the artificial pitch (Turf) at the Dayaa grounds on November 6th
2009. It
was an overwhelming experience for all the players to play on this novel
surface and
the credit should go to the high profile members of Indian Football Federation
Kuwait for arranging the new ground at such a short notice as the previously
scheduled ground was under maintenance.

The 1st match in the IFF tournament was kicked off between the mighty DHL v/s
the
energetic Don Bosco Oratory (DBO). But the day clearly belonged to DBO and
especially Leroy Rodrigues from DBO who scored a hat-trick and single handedly
took
the game away from DHL. The game commenced at 7:20 AM and within 15 min’s after
the
kick off Leroy put DBO 1-0 up by cleverly placing the ball behind the net from
a
ball that was superbly crossed by Leo Rodrigues. But within minutes DHL fought
back
and equalized with the help of Roland Fernandes who neatly placed the ball to
the
right of the goal keeper. The score remained 1-1 at half time. DBO clearly
dominated
the second half of the game and Leroy once again proving a thorn for the DHL’s
defense as he scored 2 more goals and completed a hat-trick. DHL tried its best
to
make a come back into the game but all its efforts went in vain as Steven
Rodrigues
scored the fourth goal for DBO and sealed the game. By the end of the game the
score
remained DBO (4) - DHL (1).

Leroy Rodrigues

Match 2 was played between the experienced Sky Net team V/S the seasoned
Veterans.
The game started with both teams trying their best to draw 1st blood but both
the
teams came extremely close in doing so. Fortunately for Sky Net the first goal
came
in the form of a self goal that deflected off the defender of the veteran’s
team
leaving the goal keeper stranded. But the sprit of the veteran’s team did not
deter.
As veteran’s players tried their best to equalize. Sky net on the other hand
pressed
equally harder to score more goals but the wall’s of veteran’s which is formed
of
defender’s like Mervyn Fernandes and Teddy Pinto did not allow Sky Net to
succeed.
By the end of the first half the score remained 1-0. 15 min’s into the second
half
sky net scored another goal with the help of Binoj Cheruvathor. The scored
remained
the same till the end of the match. Sky Net (2) - Veterans (0).

Friday 13th November 2009 will see the Youth of Dominic Savio’s battling
against the
dynamic AVC and all eyes will be on the second match for the day to watch the
skills
and control of MAC and Indians that will be playing against each other for the
very
first time in the IFF League.

The matches were officiated by the member organization and the only
professional one
in the business Indian Football Referee Association – IFRA which is an
important
part of IFF. Another notable factor was the presence of the families of the
teams
attending the matches which were missing all these years. This is due to the
professionalism and discipline inculculated by the Indian Football Federation.
Towards the end of the matches players were seen requesting the IFF – Kuwait
officials to conduct the whole season on the same pitch. It was a joy to those
who
experienced it and pain to those who missed the opportunity. According to
officials
of IFF – Kuwait three grass grounds in Kuwait are earmarked this year for the
whole
season.

Upcoming Fixtures are as follows:

13th Nov (7:00 AM): AVC V/S Dominic Savio’s

13th No (8:30 AM): Santos United V/S Indians

20th Nov (7:00 AM): DBO V/S MAC

20th Nov (8:30 AM): Veterans V/S ACV

[Goanet] Syngenta's disaster mock drill foiled, Company told to pack off from the Dulapi village

2009-11-13 Thread sebastian Rodrigues

It all began out of blue at 2.45 pm today November 13 2009 -
on the eve of Children's day in India - afternoon with the blowing of loud
siren from the Pesticides plant at Dulapi, Corlim in Goa's Tiswadi taluka.
Siren blew for 15 minutes. Then at 3.00 pm Goa Police accompanied by Central
Reserve Police Force (CRPF) arrived in four Sumo Jeeps and one CRPF bus and
straight away headed into the houses of the villagers. Then began ordering
women and children to get into the bus. As the bus was being filled up the
spread into the entire village and people gathered and blocked the bus from
moving away with women and children on board.

Mamlatdar of Tiswadi got into verbal clash with the adamant
villagers. He was questioned as to where women and children are being taken. He
disclose that it is mock drill for disaster management. To this villagers got
infuriated and asked as to who ordered this action. Mamlatdar said that it is a
deputy collector based in Panjim. Then villagers demanded that deputy collector
be called to meet the villagers. Then, Deputy collector Shabaji Shetye turned
up in Dulapi. He was given hostile response when he ordered the villagers to
get out from the road and let bus proceed ahead to an unknown destination with
women and children in it. Villagers refused to move away. Women and children
got out of the bus. Shabaji Shetye was grilled on the methodology of conducting
the mock drill. CRPF jawans was told to shut up and stay away from the dispute.
They obliged. Deputy collector then was asked as to why villagers were not
informed about the mock drill to which he expressed surprise.

Deputy collector was told that villagers are happy to die if
the Syngenta leaks and the villagers are opposed to any disaster management
mock drills. Villagers told the Deputy collector and high ranking police
officials present to supervise the mock drill that the demand of the villagers
is that Syngenta be shut down and the people's agricultural land taken to set
up this Swiss pesticides plant 40 years ago - then known as Ciba of India
limited - be handed over back to Mangado and Dulapi villagers in Corlim
Panchayat.

Deputy collector understood the situation, apologized to the
villagers and only then villagers allowed the CRPF bus to get out the village.

[Goanet] How Catholic Bishops Threw the Health Care Debate into Turmoil with Anti-Abortion Maneuver

2009-11-13 Thread Mario Goveia
Date: Thu, 12 Nov 2009 05:04:30 -0500
From: Venantius J Pinto venantius.pi...@gmail.com

This piece will give people a sense of high intrigue and manipulation, and
its not just the Catholic Bishops, but other horrendous parties in play
here. And so it goes, with the power they have to dictate and alter peoples
lives. Worth reading readers comments on the site at the bottom of the
article. Nothing is easy, we all know that.

Mario observes:

It's called tit for tat.  The liberals are trying to pass a massive
government run health care bill based on false pretenses, and the conservatives
are trying to stop them.

Why false pretenses?  Because the bill excludes tort reform, one of the
foremost factors in causing health care in America to be so expensive.  Also,
the bill doesn't change the current restrictions on health insurance companies
that prevent them from competing nationwide.  These two provisions alone would
reduce health care costs considerably and make health insurance more affordable
for millions of Americans.

Here is what the most credible and independant polling organization in America
found:

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/current_events/healthcare/august_2009/54_say_passing_no_healthcare_reform_better_than_passing_congressional_plan

While most Americans want health care reform they don't like what The Democrats
in the House are proposing.

From the exasperated tone of your comments and the adjectives you have used
above, it looks like you support the notion that elective abortions should be
supported and paid for by all Americans.

In the US the government has been prohibited from using federal funds to pay
for abortions since the Hyde Amendment was passed in 1976.

Why don't liberals who support abortion on demand form private fundraising
organizations that would pay for abortions privately rather than muck up public
policy and programs that include millions of Americans who oppose abortion?

Furthermore, on the larger issue of altering people's lives on what objective
evidence are you concluding that THIS government run health care plan will work
efficiently and within projected budgets when every government run social
program in US history, with the lone exception of the prescription drug program
passed by the previous administration, has exceeded its original projections
several fold and are all running out of money when they were originally
supposed to be self financing?  Not to mention the financial and operating
messes in the government run health care programs in Canada and Britain, which
are decades old, and are getting worse, not better.

The new deadline is December 10.
The chief engineer, Mr J Chimulkar told NT
“The entire network is ready. We are only waiting for the subway at Agacaim to
be completed.
We will open the bypass at least 15 days before Christmas,
as we expect the work on the subway to be completed within a month.
Sources said that the delay has been caused as the local MLA wanted
a subway traversing the highway to be completed, before the bypass was thrown
open to traffic. The subway work should take another month to complete.
This project has seen inordinate delay and a lot of double work.
The land for the road was acquired around 13 years ago and
presently the width of the road is maintained at 20 metres,
and this will be later increased to 45 metres, which is the minimum required,
for a national highway according to the highway rules.

Churchill said: Ready by 20th Dec.2009
H dtd 28/10/09
The PWD Minister Churchill Alemao today blamed the previous minister for the
delay
in the completion of the Agassaim bypass, which he said would now be ready by
December 20.
The work on the 3.9 kilometers stretch of Agassaim bypass, linking Sirdona to
Agassaim,
started way back in July 2007 and was supposed to be completed in a year
but for some reasons or the other has been delayed.
“The previous minister is to be blamed for the delay as there was no planning

Churchill told reporters, after inspecting the work at the site.
Substantiating his claim, Churchill said the earlier minister had not planned a
overpass near Agassaim church,
resulting in protests from the Church and the residents.
Churchill also blamed the protests against the hill-cutting for the delay.
Churchill also asked the contractor Delcon Engineering Pvt Ltd to complete the

paving way for its inauguration.
“The project started in July 2007 while Churchill took over the portfolio in

[Goanet] George W. Bush

2009-11-13 Thread Mario Goveia
Date: Wed, 11 Nov 2009 18:24:44 -0800 (PST)
From: Mervyn Lobo mervynal...@yahoo.ca

If anything, George Bush (43) also taught the world the value of a
parliamentary democracy. With a parliamentary democracy, as soon as a leader
loses the confidence of the MP's, he is gone. With American style democracy,
the most un-popular President stays on until he completes his term in office.
This allows, as George Bush did, for a clueless leader to continue ruining the
economy.

Mario observes:

Here we see Mervyn imply that the US president runs the US economy, a popular
canard by misinformed foreigners who hate President Bush for liberating 50
million Muslims and keeping America safe after 9/11.

A US President doesn't run anything on his own, except foreign policy where
he is then subject to budgetary restraints by the Legislature.

A US President can propose and veto and try and use persuasion and influence,
but he is subject to votes by the Legislature which can overrule him.  This is
why Barack Obama's most radical ideas have been bottled up in the legislature,
even though his own party has an overwhelming majority.

Date: Wed, 11 Nov 2009 15:54:09 -0500
From: manuel tavares duk...@bell.net

Mario is a true conservative stooge and will do all in his power to defend
President George W. Bush even to the extent of laying his unpopularity upon the
Left Wing media. Why did not the Right wing media even try to correct your so
called distortions by the left wing about  Mr. Bush. Is it because all that the
so called Left wing media published about Bush was absolutely true?

Mario responds:

Manuel seems to be either seriously misinformed or a true left wing stooge who
is doing everything in his power to distort the truth about President Bush as
we have already seen.

The mainstream media in the US is dominated by the left wing.  In one  study
89% of the reporters who cover the central government in Washington, DC,
admitted voting for the Democrat party. Only Fox News and talk radio swim
against this unending biased tsunami from the left.

Manuel wrote:

Mario's response About Bush LIBERATING the Muslims from Tyranny What have
they got in Exchange?

Mario responds:

These countries were not liberated to get anything in exchange.

Manuel wrote:

Countries which are divided and ethnically split with one faction fighting
another and carnage far above those attributable to Sadam or the Taliban
besides the destruction and ruin of the whole infrastructure. Is this the type
of LIBERATION Mario is talking about.? If so, then the Iraqis were better off
under the Tyrant Sadam, and the Afghans were better off under the Taliban.

Mario responds:

In Iraq some 300,000 victims of Saddam Hussein were found buried in mass
graves, in addition to the thousands of Shia and Sunni he killed with chemical
WMDs which resulted in the no-fly zones being set up by the UN.

Since Saddam was deposed most of the deaths have been caused by sectarian
Muslim radicals, while the coalition has been helping the Iraqi government to
STOP the violence.

We can also see that Manuel has no sympathy for the victims of tyrants or for
their freedom and democracy.  So he blames the liberators for the sectarian
violence being committed by the radicals who also have no sympathy for freedom
and democracy.

Manuel wrote:

The only good that has come is the emancipation of women.

Mario observes:

There would be no emancipation of women if Manuel's opposition to the
liberation had prevailed.  It is George Bush who gets the credit for this, not
those who opposed him every step of the way.

Manuel wrote:

Mario tries to condone the invasion of Iraq by quoting UN Resolutions on the
assumption that Sadam had WMD's which Sadam Denied and after the invasion, NO
WDM's have been found.

Mario responds:

Since we know Iraq had WMDs and were unable to account for them, thus violating
17 UN resolutions over 12 years, such claims that there were no WMDs just
because they were not found make no sense.

The chemical and biological WMDs that Iraq had did not take up much volume and
could be easily hidden in a vast country like Iraq.

If Manuel wants to make the case that Iraq had no WMDs he needs to tell what
happened to them - with facts, not speculation.

Manuel wrote:

All available documents prove that Sadam had no ties to Al Qaeda yet Bush
constantly referred to such ties. He had yet to prove this. It was only after
the invasion of Iraq that Al Qaeda gained a footing in Iraq.

Mario responds:

There was no working relationship between Iraq and Al Qaeda, but there
certainly were ties.  For example, Al Qaeda subsidiary Ansar al Islam had
training camps in Iraq and Al Qaeda leader Abu Musab al Zarkawi was given
sanctuary and medical treatment in Iraq.

Manuel wrote:

Bush only invaded Iraq to show how powerful he was he did not care for the
Iraqi people. He did not even have an exit strategy. That's how rational he was.

They say, whether elphants fight or make love, the grass beneath gets
trampled. Goans were like the grass, I think, trying to make the best
deal of whichever side of a global conflict (they probably didn't
understand) they got caught on.

In Yvonne Vaz-Ezdani's book, most of the contributors actually
returned from Burma to British India or Portuguese Goa after the
Japanese invasion of that country in 1941-2. But a handful actually
stayed on, and write about their experiences and building bridges with
the Japanese!

Interestingly, there were Goans studying ophthalmology and other
sciences (mainly) in the Berlin of the 1920s! I think Dr Gama Pinto is
one such example.

I do not believe World War II was our war, despite all the rhetoric
about the fight against Nazism and what not. It still seems to me to
be a ruthless scramble for colonies between a Britain that had an
unfair share at that time and a Germany that felt badly left out
(despite its technological and scientific prowess). And a violent
struggle for economic clout in a changing world. -- FN

[Goanet] A Goan lady intelligence officer for the CIA? Out in the cold: Intel agent says U.S. 'betrayed' her

Out in the cold: Intel agent says U.S. 'betrayed' her
November 10, 2009 - 3:31pm

Sabrina De Sousa is dismayed at the way the U.S. handled the situation.
J.J. Green, wtop.com

WASHINGTON - Sabrina De Sousa's job in 2003 as a State Department
officer in the political/military section of Milan, Italy was to
provide Washington with the ground truth.

What's ground truth?

It could be the economic situation of the country, how the country
views us (the United States) or it could be an incident that happened
on any given day. Our job is to report that information back to
Washington, she says.

But it was an event that took place on one of those any given days
that resulted in her conviction in absentia along with 22 U.S. State
Department, Central Intelligence Agency and military officers on
kidnapping charges by the Italian government on Nov. 4, 2009.

That event led to the unraveling of her life, and De Sousa charges the
U.S. government turned its back on her.

I feel dismayed at the way this whole thing has been handled. It
didn't need to get to this point. I'm an American citizen and I feel
I've been betrayed by the government, she says.

According to the Italian judiciary, it all began on Feb. 17, 2003 as
Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr, also known as Abu Omar, was abducted by CIA
officers as he was walking to his mosque in Milan for noon prayers. He
was suspected of being one of Italy's most dangerous terrorists and
viewed as a potential threat to the U.S.

After the abduction, court documents say he was later transported to a
prison in Egypt, where over a four-year period he was allegedly
tortured.

De Sousa was one of 26 U.S. agents and seven Italian agents accused of
planning and carrying out the operation known as an extraordinary
rendition.

But De Sousa says that's impossible. She says she was 300 miles away
skiing with her child at the time of the rendition.

If, as has been alleged, I was involved in planning it and I was this
big shot they claim I was, based on interviews with certain Italian
officials, then I would have to have been around there to execute
something like this.

If you look at the court order that showed what the prosecutor
presented, there were all actions which were bad judgment on the part
of several officers in terms of they what they said about me, e-mails
(they sent) giving out my phone number to individuals whom I don't
know. That is what the prosecutor put together to indict me.

The bad judgment she refers to was Bob Lady's, a State Department
colleague in Milan.

My supervisor, the head of the political military section, he had
made comments to officers in the Italian government, De Sousa says.
Lady, the former CIA Station Chief in Milan, was among those
convicted.

Omar was eventually released in 2007. No evidence of any aggression
against the U.S. was ever found.

When the guilty verdicts came down, a silent ripple coursed through
the intelligence community.

When this administration's goal is to reach out and partner up and
all that, and you throw their own officers under the bus, what's the
perception of everyone in the world?

They're going to see some very vulnerable officers sitting in the
different missions in the world knowing that friend and foe can indict
them anytime they want on whatever charge they want because there's a
real possibility the U.S. will do absolutely nothing about it. This
country just looks very bad, De Sousa says.

The CIA has not commented on any of the allegations surrounding Abu
Omar, says CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano.

That said, it would be wrong for anyone to suggest that this agency
doesn't support its people. Intelligence operations, by definition,
involve risk. If we left our officers out on their own when things got
tough, the CIA wouldn't have lasted two years, let alone 62.
Organizations like this run on trust and confidence.

The situation also may throw a wrench into the international political machine.

It is virtually unprecedented that a foreign power, and particularly
a close ally, would pursue criminal charges against acknowledged U.S.
diplomats, and even rarer that the U.S. government would allow it to
happen once underway, says De Sousa's U.S. attorney Mark Zaid.

To be sure, enemy powers have targeted our diplomats, but even in the
worst case scenario the individual would simply be declared persona
non grata and leave the country. That this rendition prosecution even
finished reflects a fundamental failure of a recognized system, he
says.

De Sousa says it all could have been avoided had the U.S. confronted
the situation head on in the beginning. She says members of the Senate
and the U.S. House of Representatives refused to help her or her
fellow officers.

We started to talk to the Senators(Dianne) Feinstein, and (Jay)
Rockefeller and from the House (Pete) Hoekstra and (Silvestre) Reyes.
We sent numerous letters up to the Hill, also (former) Attorney
General Michael Mukase, the DNI's office, General Hayden (former

which has Konnsam and they would make two buncheds and plant at their

The next morning the priest would cut the konnsam and bless it for the

Hi Mike,
I'm not sure if any Goan served on the Axis side, this would depend I think on
Goan migration to Axis countries. I do know that during the course of the War,
the then British Counsel stationed in Goa, kept close watch on a one particular
Goan who kept close company with the Germany counsel also stationed in Goa. Now
those two might have just been friends and nothing more to it other than
friendship. There were a few German sailors or were they Italian, I can't
remember exactly, who took refuge in Goa after their ships had been torpedoed.
The majority of the Goans were very pro-Allied forces and infact one Goan had
lit up his house with lights and everytime there was a Allied victory he would
flash his lights all night long. All this is my own research, so you're not
likely to be able to google it I'm afraid. :-))

Take care,

[Goanet] Chuck Konnachi - Konkani Tiatro in Toronto

O Portugues foi mas a nossa lingua Konkani esta

Viva O Konkani, Viva O Goa

CHUK KONNACHI
(Review and Interview with Director Marshal Fernandes)

October 24th, 2009; History was created at Michael Power High School by
Producer
Sandra Menezes, Director Marshal Fernandes and their entire cast and crew of
the
Konkani Tiatro CHUK KONNACHI.

I have attended Konkani Tiatros in Toronto for the past several years and I
must say
nothing ever came close to this fantastic and extravagant performance. My hats
off
to Sandra Menezes and Marshal Fernandes for giving the Goans of Toronto
something to
remember for years to come; Sandra has produced this sold out event and Marshal
has
casted the best cast ever and directed this play at its best.

I had nothing but praises and compliments to the team of Chuk Konnachi. My
personal
review begins when I reached Michael Power School at 1:50 p.m. After a few
rounds in
the parking lot I managed to find a spot and was surprised to see a full
parking
lot. I entered the school at 2:05 p.m. and was surprised again to see the
crowed
hallway. People were lining up to enter, some to grab goodies given by Kevin
D'Souza
(Platinum Sponsor) and some to view the Konkani Song Book by Francis Rodrigues.
Ultimately all present were soon to be witnessing the best drama ever staged in
Toronto. Some people were looking for tickets, but in vain. This show was
apparently
sold out weeks before October 24th. The hall management was smooth and superb,
only
to find out that Silviano Barbosa, Roliffe D'Souza and their team was
responsible
for this efficiency.

Once seated in the auditorium, it was 2:20 p.m. and I expected the show to
commence
at least at 3:00 p.m. To my pleasant surprise, Dr. Lucina Pinto came on the
stage at
2:30 p.m. sharp to render the national anthem O'Canada in Konkani, What a
delight!
I was given to understand that this anthem was translated by the director,
Marshal
Fernandes - another great feat.

Soon after the national anthem, Joe Vaz, Rhio Gracias and Marshal Fernandes
sang one
of the best composed songs, M.Boyer to whom this Tiatro was tributed and the
song
was composed by Marshal Fernandes. From then on there was no looking back; the
play
went on with beautiful ear pleasing songs. The timing and the flow of the
scenes
were impeccable. There was no time for boredom nor to think of what was coming
up
next. It was smooth sailing throughout the Tiatro.

I cannot pick nor point any single individual that did not perform at his/her
best,
and for that performance, the audience was pleased, satisfied and went home
with a
memory that will last for years to come. The stage sets were so simple, yet
brought
out the reality of homes in Goa and was a pleasant sight to the eyes of the
viewers.
I believe this credit goes to the stage manager, A.C. Pereira and his team.
A.C.
also received a Dedicated Contribution award for his past work contributed to
the
Konkani stage; a well deserved one.

Before I get into the review of the play, I'd like to comment on the songs
which
were so beautiful and pleasing that I must congratulate all the singers who did
a
wonderful job. This is the first time I have ever heard so many locally
composed
songs, I can see that talent is in abundance in Toronto and I thank the
composers
for bringing their talent on stage. I would like to recognize these individuals
as
it takes a lot of talent and sacrifice to compose songs and train individuals
to
perform them on stage.

O'Canada - Composed by Marshal Fernandes, performed by Dr. Luicna Pinto

Nikita and the deserving winner was Puru Pratap Singh which was announced on
November 12, 2009 at the Google Awards ceremony in Delhi.

Nikita finished a close second but she had a fantastic experience specially
meeting the original doodler Dennis Hwang and attending his workshop on doodle
designing.

Here are some of the top doodles that were in contention for the top place.

[Goanet] Subject: Panic in Bicholim as leopard attacks dog

2009-11-13 Thread MD
I wish the carnivorous wild beasts like leopard, tiger and others
lived peacefully with the other 'good vegetarian animals' like they
lived in the olden day 'ashrams’ among the Rishis!!. Alas, they are
not grass eaters, unless they have stomach upset. (Has any one
observed domestic cats or dogs eating grass any time? For them, grass
is cure for the ailment).

One more thing, I have also heard that these carnivorous animals kill
only when they are hungry - they do not kill rampantly. When their
stomach is full, they ignore an animal grazing nearby. They always
economise and avoid waste. Probably they intrude human dwelling to
attack domestic animals, because there is nothing in the forest that
is worth eating and a hungry beast does not differentiate.

These are beautiful and powerful animals (on or off the television
screen) I hope the forest officials set traps for the
intruders and leave them at safe places where they can find suitable
prey with ease.

Now we can see the majestic pea-cocks with their colourful tail
feathers fanned out and dance as they try to attract the attention of
the pea-hen, and so many other birds, that I thought were extinct,
because now the rampant hunting of these birds has been disallowed.
The cuckoo bird sings a melodious 'cuhoo' and responds to even human
response!! Wonderful experience. So is the blind bat clutching the
plantain flower bunch (bondi) to suck out the honey at dusk) and some
colourful tiny birds eating the wild berries called 'bensam', the
Kingfisher hunting an insect (they have adapted to this living as fish
is hard to find), the parrots eating the peru 'guava' fruit.

The crows, if one of their kind is caught in between electric cables
and hanging in there, dead, we find their entire 'khandaan' gather
around and cry 'kaa kaa' every day until the dead bird falls down
eventually or removed. What a sincere mourning!!

For a few special days each autumn, Point Pelee is a temporary home to
thousands of migrating monarch butterflies. As soon as favourable
conditions occur, they begin one of nature's greatest journeys by
crossing Lake Erie (Canada). They cannot linger, for their destination
is some 3000 km further south in the mountains of central Mexico! Why
would this tiny insect make such a monumental journey? Check website:
http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-np/on/pelee/natcul/natcul5.aspx

I am yet to see a quail these days. We used to call them 'lovo' that
dwelt among bushes, they moved very fast. But due to the increase of
houses, the bush land has disappeared, depriving these beautiful and
secretive birds of their natural habitat, and probably are extinct
now., and so are the wild hens, some water birds that emerged during
tilling time, the streams teaming with rock crabs, turtles and variety
of fish, that we could catch by a simple trap that was placed where
ever the water plunged down..and the ambot-theik curry and the hot
boiled rice with some salted palponos (a variety of wild jack fruit,
the size of divi-guzo (breadfruit) or mango, with fire roasted red
chillis mixed and squeezed into delicious chutney or paste!! Wow!!
Those were the days.

Yet I had the opportunity to pluck and then get them cooked, the
fragile flower like lily white mushrooms that bloom during certain
time at certain place of our backyard. Though the dish was not as good
as mother’s, yet enjoyed the rare delicacy.

The fisher women visit our native house daily even to this day. If
they happened to see a visitor (son, daughter), their price goes sky
high and sure, mother makes them pay blaming that the price increase
is because she saw the visitors and sure the fish would be bought with
or without grumbling by mum. The saltwater river Muddosho (ladyfish)
and the fatty Mullets (Shevto) with roce curry, was out of this world.
Only poor bangda (mackerel) was fried in the backshouse, on woodfire
(so that the pungent smell does not bother the foreign-born
grandchildren playing video games in the main hall!!)

[Goanet] Konkani and Goans

Albert writes:- People in Goa (pardon me ) wants to be Englishman, hantin,,,
bolsant . as the old saying goes. Many of our goans like to show off and so
they speak English and many of our children like to learn French. But people
outside India would prefer to speak konkani and keep their mother tongue alive
and many goans all over the world have goans club or cultural clubs and they
are actively active in konkani tiatros. Uk, Germany, US and many other places
have vibrant people and active clubs and programmes. I had written a play
Mummy maka vengent dor and I had sent it to one Greg Carvalho in England. They
staged the show in three different places and when I got the DVD I was
surprised that their pronounciation of konkani was superb better than some of
us here and those when in Goa and whom I knew could not speak  a word of
konkani when they were here are now on the stage acting and singing beautiful
solos and duets too. I felt they were better than the professionals .These are
the people who have kept konkani alive because they must be using it when at
home and at their meeting place as that is the only to identify goans.

Ok, Folks.
My fore-fathers moved to what is now Tanzania before the USA celebrated its
100th birthday.

Tanganyika was then ruled by the Germans.

When a German gentleman came to your business and requested you to 'support'
the German war effort, the answer you gave was, Yes, Sir, in any way you want.

There is a message somewhere in my archives of the Goan Institute,
Dar-es-salaam sending birthday wishes to the Kaiser. There are, to say the
least, some very interesting signatories on that message.

Mervyn1650Lobo
Those of you with some knowledge of WWI in E. Africa might remember the
Konigsberg episode. British airplanes were assembled on Mafia Island and these
searched for the German ship hiding in the Rufiji. Even in the late 1970's,
there were Goan decendants living in Mafia and on the mainland opposite.

Hi Mike,
I'm not sure if any Goan served on the Axis side, this would depend I think on
Goan migration to Axis countries.

Take care,

This is an amazing revision of history. The fight against Nazism in scare

I think that what FN is saying is not so far fetched unless one wishes to

[Goanet] A graden, bandstand

2009-11-13 Thread Bernado Colaco
The bust was brought down at night without any public knowledge in the early
seventies. As usual gullible Goans raised no voice. It could be that Sinari was
involved. Surely it had the hand of the Bandodcar government.

From what I can gather, it was Prabhkar Sinari et al who, in the middle of the
night, brought down the bust circa 1963.?Please correct me if I'm wrong.?

As to limited recreation, perhaps the author of that article did not like a
more sedate evening after the relatively hard day's work :-)? Shouts of
Diar-Noich (Diario da Noite was the evening paper), Sort Sort - falean

[Goanet] Brazilian bug hits Goans politicians and football adminstrators

2009-11-13 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
Brazil are the iconic team of international football and the World Cup
2010 edition is some seven months away. There is no better way to
watch fine vintage football stuff then those gold coloured shirt
moving in symphony in a lethal counter-attacking unit. That’s
precisely what some 50,000 thousand spectators will be watching from
the stands of Khalifa Stadium on Saturday, 8.00PM local time.
Football crazy Goans have been addictive to the Brazilian style of
football. The signature style of the South Americans draws people from
their siestas, making them travel miles to see their favourite team in
action.
Call it infatuation or love, but the fact is some die-hard fans and
football administrators from Goa are in Doha, the capital city of
Qatar, to watch Brazil play a depleted England side in action, hits by
injuries.
Apart from football, Goa and Brazil have one common factor- both were
former Portuguese colonies, and football was introduced in both the
places by the colonial rulers.
Heading the list is All India Football Federation Secretary Alberto
Colaco, who flew this morning into Doha, while Goa football
Association Secretary Savio Messais and two others flew from Goa on
Friday evening.
A few prominent Goans businessman from the Candolim-Calngute coastal
belt, have also landed in Doha to watch the football action taking
advantage of the direct flights introduced by Qatar Airways between
Doha and Goa and also the roundabout Goa-Sharjah-Doha flight of Air
Arabia.
If football fans are in Doha, can the Goan politicians be far away.
Certainly not, Calangute MLA and EDC Chairman Angelo Fernandes who was
recently in Oman for the Global Goan convention and then flew to
London for the Tourism Mart is also in Doha, flying straight from
London.
Another Goan MLA Reginaldo Lourenco is also in Doha for the last three
days, he was invited and attended a Konkani Musical show organized by
Goan Cultural group in Goa held on Friday evening. According to his
earlier travel plans the young MLA from Curtorim, who defeated his
one-time mentor Francisco Sardinha in the assembly elections was set
to take the Saturday flight back to Goa. But, hectic efforts are on
now to change the travel plans as the Brazilian bug has also hit
Lourenco.
The 15-odd Konkani tiatrist group who were in Doha to perform at
Konkani Cultural show had to reluctantly live Doha on a sad note
having missed out on a once in a life time opportunity of watching
Brazil-England live.

too many dos and don'ts. Once in church at the begining of elevation time many
of us felt like kneeling. The priest announced Please stand so everyone

our hearts open to God. We have to say the rigid rosary and the clergy will
remind the faithfuls specially the ladies are trained by them to be faithful to
their nonsense. It has to be ten hail Marys which sometimes we say like the
parrots. Once when Fr.Emidio was the vicar at Parra Church I attended a funeral
and was surprised that Fr.Emeidio was just reciting a prayer without a prayer
book and was encouraging the faithful to do like wise and the whole prayer
service in the cemetry took around half an hour because everyone started
praying in their own language and this should be the prayer. While God wants us
to read the Bible the church will come with Daily flash. The word of God is the
food for our body and for our soul. We ought to remove our fanactism from our
interior. Those who are with Christ are not against christ. Hence God has
created the Christians, created the Hindus, and the Muslims and everyone. His
heaven is for everyone who love Him and remain bonded with Him. God will not
see whther you have received baptism or not. God will inspect your heart.
Masses and Rosaries and Novenas will not serve you. To go to Heaven you need
Witness. Every Judge gives verdict based on human witness. When you do to the
least of my breathens you do it to me is the key word of our religion. How many
people these days have become homeless and family less did any one bother about
them ! or did we say Government has started a process for them let them do
it. We Catholics are heartless people and have no right to enter the kingdom of
heaven. Many are seen running from pillar to post to gain salvation when God is
dwelling in our homes why search Him among the dead ? why do you pray before
Lifeless gods ?not my words. Its in the bible.

It is quite unusual for someone to claim that a work of fiction gives an

white being used against those who believe that the second world war was a just
fight against Nazism.

I have read a fair bit on the rise of Nazism, the history of the second world
war, and the medical consequences of the Nazi ideology. I have spent a whole
day in the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC and visited historical sites
where the Nazi atrocities, as well as the fight against Nazis took place in
Eastern Europe. It is hard for me to imagine what sort of nuances about
colonialism in a novel could convince someone that the fight against Nazism in
scare quotes was mere rhetoric. It would be educational if Noronha or Augusto
could describe in brief their version of history, and how they know that the
claims made in a fictional novel are right.

What should I do if someone told me to read the Da Vinci Code novel to find out
about the nuances that justify that the claims of a world-wide conspiracy are
not far-fetched?

Even as there is controversy surrounding the visit of the ministers to

Interestingly, the officers’ visit to the casino comes at a time when
there is controversy surrounding the case registered by the CID Crime

caught on camera while gaming at a popular casino in South Goa.
The officers were spotted when the press team was on board Casino

No sooner the officers saw the press team in the casino; they locked
themselves into a small bar and did not come out till the press team

paid the entry fee and were given complimentary gaming chips.
Casino Royale MD Narendra Punj when contacted refused to comment on
the issue. When reporters asked SP Atmaram Deshpande, who is the PRO
for Goa Police about the junket, he said he had no comment to make.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Govind Parvatkar
told Herald the presence of top police officers in the casinos was
“shameful”. “It shows the government has no control over its
officers,” he said.
The BJP has been consistently opposing casinos in River Mandovi.
“We know black money as well as corruption money is going there,”
Parvatkar said.

 (del)

*From the exasperated tone of your comments and the adjectives you have
used above, it looks like you support the notion that elective abortions
should be supported and paid for by all Americans*.

In the US the government has been prohibited from using federal funds to
pay for abortions since the Hyde Amendment was passed in 1976.

Why don't liberals who support abortion on demand form private fundraising
organizations that would pay for abortions privately rather than muck up
public policy and programs that include millions of Americans who oppose
 abortion?

Furthermore, on the larger issue of altering people's lives on what
objective evidence are you concluding that THIS government run health care
plan will work efficiently and within projected budgets when every
government run social program in US history, with the lone exception of the
prescription drug program passed by the previous administration, has
exceeded its original projections several fold and are all running out of
money when they were originally supposed to be self financing?? Not to
mention the financial and operating messes in the government run health care
programs in Canada and Britain, which are decades old, and are getting
 worse, not better.
