Re: [Goanet] Dev borem korum

2010-03-17 Thread Sebastian Borges
Dear friends,
Many thanks for your several responses which only go to prove the point that I
wanted to make: that Konkani has many words and expressions for expressing
gratitude without expressly invoking God and that the hackneyed expression can
sometimes go to ridiculous limits like if we were to say Dev borem korum,
Deva! Expressions like din'vastam, upkar man'tam, abhar man'tam, borem
zaum have been there since before the arrival of the Portuguese. These are
found in the 16-17th century literature in which argam ditam is also used but
only for God and saints. Then, how did Dev come in? I think it was introduced
by the Padres. At first they translated bom dia, boa tarde and boa noite
for which Konkani did not have equivalents in vogue. God is not an explicit
part of these Portuguese expressions, but is implied in the sense (may God
give you a) Good Day etc. So God was explicitly inserted into the Konkani
equivalents, because the literal
translation Boro Dis! might not have conveyed the exact sense of the
Portuguese greeting. That the source is Portuguese can be judged from the fact
that we do not have the Konkani equivalent of the English Good afternoon.
Having done this, they took up the equivalent of obrigado or muito obrigado
wherein God is not even implied. The Konkani equivalent was (tujem) Borem
zaum. Here borem is a noun and hence means good in the sense of welfare.
Therefore, here too, God is implied. Hence Dev (tujem) borem korum. In the
course of time, this has become Tuka Dev borem korum which is not exactly the
same thing. It is worse when 'muito obrigado is translated as tuka chodd Dev
borem korum and muitissimo obrigado as tuka choddant chodd Dev borem
korum. Grammatically, the correct forms should be tuka Dev(an) chodd borem
korum and tuka Dev(an) choddant chodd borem korum because the adjective
applies to 'borem' and not to 'Dev.'
And now our Konklish Goans have turned Bore...m zaum into Tenkyu aaam!
We also often hear from a platform: Hanv tumkam Dev borem korum mhonnttam
which is akin to saying I say Thank you to you.

According to Msgr. Dalgado 'dhin'vas' comes from the Sanskrit 'dhonyovad.' (One
of the meanings of this would be 'I say that I am blessed.') Among the
European expressions, I find that the Portuguese 'muito obrigado' comes closest
to this in meaning. How does 'dhonyovad' convert to 'dhin'vas'? There are
some patterns (laws) in the ethymological evolution of a Konkani word. Any
borrowed long word (whether from Sanskrit or Portuguese) automatically shortens
on the Konkani tongue. The Sanskrit 'dhonyovad' being masculine would first
become 'dhonyovadu' in Konkani the syllables 'dho' and 'va' being accented.
The accented syllables generally survive. Therefore quadrisyllabic
dho-nyo-va-du gets converted to a trisyllabic dhon'-va-du. From here
'dhon' became 'dhin' and 'vadu' became 'vas'. Please note that the Sanskrit
'gnean' and 'grahok' have become 'ginean' and 'girak' respectively in Konkani.

Meaningful discussion from knowledgeable persons would be most elucidating and
welcome.

Mog asum.

[Goanet] Panjim's ruin

2010-03-17 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

Two years ago I had a testy exchange with a Bengali dweeb at a
meeting called by the Chief Secretary to enforce the High Court
directives issued in the Panjim PIL ruling. This Bengali was the
secretary in one of the concerned departments and he was babbling,
in effect telling me why Panjim should be allowed to rot. I told
him that I did not want Panjim to become another Indian sewer
like Kolkota. It was clear to me that the turbaned CS, the Bengali
dweeb, and other bhaile officials had no interest whatsoever in
the wellbeing of Goa much less that of Panjim. Why were - and are -
parasites like these in charge of matters in Goa? Their sole
interest is in feathering their own nest. This is not new of
course. It is par for the course for every outsider deputed
from Delhi to steal grab the minute he checks into
Goa. What is astonishing is that Goans are such spineless folks
to let this happen year after year without the slightest demur.
It is natural for fellows like the Bengali dweeb, brought up in
a Kolkota sewer, to want to turn Goa into another Indian
sewer. But what is the excuse for Goans?

JoeGoaUk has been keeping us abreast of Panjim's continuing
slide into the gutter. Ghatis has virtually taken over the promenade.
Azad Maidan is a dump - ghatis pissing on Martyr's memorial,
vomiting on TB Cunha memorial, etc etc. The useless Goan journos
watch this charade every single day from across from the street
while blowing beedie smoke at Cafe Prakash.

This is not some seedy corner of town. IT IS THE CENTRE OF
PANJIM.

In Feb 2009 I was at the High Court to sort out my contempt
petition (the CCP is in contempt of the High Court's rulings on
Panjim's maintenance) when someone accosted me. It was a
well known lawyer, the son of a very senior lawyer known to
be the most sought-after legal mind in Goa today.
The son pressed a couple of photos in my hand, requesting
me to include them in my petition. The photos were about
squatters on the pavement. Why, I asked him, did people of
his considerable professional and social standing have to
wait for me to do this? Why couldn't they simply
marshal a like-minded group and pursue this vigorously?
Let's just say the conversation soon petered out. Later
I found out teh real reason for lawyer-bab's inchoate
interest in Panjim's health. The menace has now landed
at his doorstep - or rather, too close to his office building.
This encapsulates the Goan ethic, which may be summarized
thusly: as long as I am not personally affected, I don't care.

To those Goans who are reading this and who continue to
be passive, let me tell you this: the day is not far when
the ghati menace will land at your own doorstep. By that time
it will be too late to do anything. We have to demand from
the govt to (a) enforce all our civic laws and (b) curb migrant
influx (both high end and low end) into Goa. NOW.

Regards,

[Goanet] TRAPS STILL BEING LAID AT NANODA; FOREST DEPT FAILS TO KEEP CHECK

2010-03-17 Thread samir umarye
--
Samir Umarye
BICHOLIM MARCH 16: Even as many villagers from Pistewada Nanoda Bicholim,
where the a leopard had attacked a person while another was killed, have
preferred to keep tight-lipped, when Herald tried to investigate have found
traps still being laid in the jungle.

It may be recalled that on Sunday a leopard had attacked a person while
another leopard was found dead being caught in a trap. On Monday, the people
from the

village had blatantly denied of laying any traps in the jungle and had
expressed their unawareness about the incident.

Today, when Herald searched for the fact it was found that there were
several traps still laid in the jungle. Most of these traps were the wire
traps used by the

villagers to catch small animals like that of rabbits. During the two hour
search one live trap was found in the forest while several other traps were
also discovered, eventhough the wires of these traps were missing.

The people who lay trap might have removed all these wire traps after the
leopard incident. So only the wooden poles were found which support these
traps Bicholim

Animal Rescue squad chief, Amrut Singh told Herald.

The usual wire trap used by most of the hunters consist of a cable wire
which is tied to two wooden poles on both sides and at the center several
traps are made. These

type of wire traps are placed in the forest on the way from where the
animals usually move. Once any animal is caught in the trap it becomes very
difficult for him to

rescue as the knot of the cable becomes tight as the animal uses force to
rescue itself.

This is an usual technique used by the hunters and it was in the same type
of trap laid for the wild boar that the leopard was caught and died. Amrut
Singh explained

the wire traps are usual thing in the area and the trap that we got today
is used to catch rabbits, it is surprising that even after such incident the
villagers are still laying

traps. The forest department should act swiftly and nab those involved in
the act

We are yet to find the trap in which the leopard was caught eventhough we
searched the entire area he told.

It may be stated that Nanoda is a village where wild boar, porcupines,
monkeys and other small animals are very commonly found. So, the hunters
place traps to catch wild boar whose flesh fetches them huge money.

Fyi, there are 14 songs on this CD and of these 5 songs are exposing local

There are no religious extremists involved in this. Calvert has himself

that the men who were sent to his house were sent by the politician and the

This is not the first time that songs on priest are sung but there have been

You should be aware of paedophilia allegations against catholic priests
and
currently even Pope is accused of inadvertently sheltering a paedophile

religious leaders who betray trust of their followers. It is for our
respective religions to sort out their internal problems.

My interest is not human frailties but breaking of law by violence or
threats of violence by people with extremist opinions and particularly its
exploitation by pseudo-secular political operatives.

Threat of violence against Hussain was wrong and so was the violence in
Colva. I condemn both in no uncertain terms. The pseudo-secularist

Another point of view here:

http://www.hindustantimes.com/News-Feed/columnsothers/When-the-fringe-benefits/Article1-516263.aspx

Why are these Internet Hindus worthy of notice at all? There are three
reasons. First, a collective of the intellectually inadequate, the
professionally frustrated and the plain bigoted, they represent the
collapse of Hindu politico-intellectual space into a caricature of the
very Talibanism it opposes.

Second, as Hindutva as an idea has contracted in real-world politics,
it has become shrill and over-the-top in cyberspace. The Left has its
universities, journals and institutional support system. It is a
commentary on Internet Hindus that they only have multiple email
accounts.

Third, there is a hard question for the BJP. How quickly can it delink
itself from Internet Hindus and their offline equivalents? A party
that seeks to build broad-spectrum opposition unity in Parliament on
governance issues can do without such viral downloads.

First of all Mr Barve, Kuwait is not Qatar. They are two separate states. So
let's at least get our geography right, if we can't get our historical heritage
quite right. I've been to Qatar. One desolate, God forsaken corner of the
earth; lonely, spartan Arabesque buildings rising out of salt-flats. No human
on earth would take its citizenship unless it is a sort of self-imposed
incarceration akin to being exiled to Siberia. That is what we Indians have
sentenced Hussain to, our most eminent artist, to live in Qatar. He could have
taken the citizenship of any other country. I'm quite sure a heaving Dubai
would have offered it to him, but I have little doubt that at 91, all this man
wants is peace and escape from the world. There is a brilliant line in Amitav
Ghosh's novel the Glass Palace when the king of Burma is exiled by the British

he would be buried watching its sand

[Goanet] ST JOSEPH'S FEAST

2010-03-17 Thread manuel tavares
March 19 is the feast of St Joseph. St Joseph was the patron Saint of the Dr.
Ribeiro Goan School in Nairobi Kenya. The School was a pioneer and principal
centre of learning in Kenya for Goans of every strata of life. It churned out
many Goan personalities in various fields and was an institution dedicated to
excellence in the field of education. The feast of St Joseph was celebrated
annually, and each and every child who attended the school participated. For a
very nominal fee, the school provide some snacks and a pop and although all
students were present on that day, Lessons were suspended and a Soccer game
between Bardez and Salcete was played on the schools Grounds. I wish to take
this opportunity to wish all Ex Students of the school a Happy Feast. I wish we
could arrange a get together in Toronto where there are several Ex Students to
celebrate the feast and to reminisce about the good old days.

taken lightly nor must the punishment be diluted because the victim has agreed
to marry the perpetrator. We know that our principles and religious beliefs
sometimes force our young women caught up in this dilemma brought about by rape
to agree to do anything including marry a rapist in order to save face or
preserve the Family name. Therefore the rapist must be punished for his crime

[Goanet] But he did not have a shirt (tribute to S.K. Banerji, hardnewsmedia.com)

2010-03-17 Thread Goanet News
http://www.hardnewsmedia.com/2010/03/3467

But he did not have a shirt
Sanjay Kapoor

I have been seeing him for so many years; he would slip out of his car
and slowly walk towards Delhi's India International Centre's
well-stacked library. One of the last surviving Indian Civil Services
(ICS) officers, till he died on January 28, 2010 at the ripe age of
97, SK Banerji did not mind the anonymity that isolation of old age
brings to people when many of their friends, admirers and relatives
have long died or gone their own ways. On occasions when I met him at
his house in Vasant Vihar, I found him surrounded by his Jamini Roys
and nursing a glass of his favourite whiskey.

He was remarkably alert for his age and gave a quiet chuckle when I
presented him Gabriel Garcia Marquez's book Memories of My Melancholy
Whores on his 92nd birthday. The protagonist of Marquez's book is a
90-year-old man who makes one last visit to his favourite whore
believ¬ing that a 90-year-old could perform better than many of those
young 80-year-olds. Indeed, I could never really check with Banerji
what he thought of the venerable magic realism litterateur's
interesting submission. Banerji was a nationalist. He was not one of
those types who remained mired in the past and celebrated the goodness
of the British Raj. He joined the British steel frame of
administration, ICS, in 1937, and retired in 1972 as secretary in the
ministry of external affairs. Before his retirement he played an
important role in building support for India in the Bangladesh war.
Save for a brief assignment as the Lt Governor of Goa, where he
donated a major part of his famous art collection, he did not really
chase any other job and remained an astute observer of national and
international happenings.

His book, From dependence to non-alignment, provides an interesting
sweep of India in transition from 1937 onwards. Besides detailing many
foreign policy issues in his book, Banerji provides enough evidence of
the mindless hunting of tigers by the British and how it contributed
to bringing down the population of the big cat.

Banerjiwas posted at area around Chindwara - better known these days
as the constituency of Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways
Kamal Nath - where he discovered that there was little danger from
tigers or panthers, who justifiably avoided human beings. He did not
find any conflict between the tribals and animals, something that is
often shown as a reason for the fall of the tiger population. I tried
to stop a lone Gond walking through the forest in the direction I had
just seen a tiger, he just grunted and continued on his way,
unperturbed, writes Banerji.

In those days, he says, tiger skins and stuffed heads of the great cat
used to leap out of the walls of drawing rooms and guest houses,
especially princely dwellings and landmarks of the British raj. Nearly
everyone used to talk about the 'shikaar experience' and the hunting
of man-eaters (also, the majestic tigers in the wild who were largely
not man-eaters).

There were so many tigers in central India and in other parts that one
of Banerji's forest officers who thought he was following a man-eater
turned to find that he was instead being stealthily pursued by another
great cat. Fortunately for the officer, a Gond tribal beat up the
tiger with his axe and chased him away. Later, the tribal was given an
award for valour, but as he did not have a shirt, that award could not
be pinned onto him.

Banerji reminisces about an India where needs of the people were
limited and many people never felt the need to even lock their houses.
Even the circuit houses where district officials during their tour
used to stay did not need to be padlocked during the day. Only in the
night they had to be barred due to a reason: the tiger or leopards
would casually saunter towards the guest house. In the morning,
Banerji writes, pugmarks could be found all around the guest house.
However, snakes, according to him, presented the biggest threat, and
his orderlies put his golf club to good use and bludgeoned them.

There are more interesting vignettes that Banerji provided about how
the steel frame worked in India. The one that gets precedence is the
need for supervision to ensure that the subordinate staff does not
become slothful and corrupt. Although the ICS was neither Indian nor
civil nor a service, there were many attributes visible in legendary
officers like SK Banerji that have not been replicated by the new
generation of bureaucrats. Perhaps the most significant being writing
reports or keeping a diary about the happenings in their districts.
The reports by former ICS officers had literary merit as well as
future use. Now no one writes to anyone.

[Goanet] Cruise Chronicle: You need visa power (Wendell Rodricks)

2010-03-17 Thread Goanet Reader
Cruise Chronicle | Wendell Rodricks
wendellrodri...@gmail.com

You need visa power

Ahead of a 51-day cruise
around South America, the
merry-go-round begins
at home.

Say Gren-a (as in hey)-daa. It is not Gran-aa-daa. That's in
Spain, I am told by local Grenadians, who are justifiably
proud of their Island of Spice, an emerald in a pale
turquoise Caribbean Sea. Life moves slowly, more naturally
here, barely touched by the horrors of mass tourism.

At the Laluna hotel in Morne Rouge, recommended by every
single luxury travel site and travel connoisseur, the cove is
a private paradise. Early one morning, I see my first
moonset ever. When jet lag drags me out on to the
silver sands, there, shining like the final scene in Mamma
Mia, is this giant orb, lending a silver touch to the waters
before it slides into the sea.

On this island, with its light muscovado beaches and
cinnamon-scented fields, it makes perfect sense to sit on the
beach, local rum punch in hand, and watch as the sailboats of
the annual Grenada Sailing Festival flutter by. The
adventurer can trek to the Grand Etang National Park and see
the Seven Sisters Waterfalls in St Andrews.

Apart from the delicious Italian at Laluna, sample the
culinary delights at Carib Sushi, La Belle Creole, Karma
Club, Rhodes Restaurant or Nutmeg Café. Shopaholics will
find comfort and more at the Best Little Liquor Store (buy
the Clarke's Court Rum and the local chocolate) and the St
George's Saturday market.

Even as I sip the rum punch, I wonder that we are in Grenada
at all. It was never part of the plan.

For many years now, we've had this dream, to see
the entire continent of South America in one grand
go, on a cruise. On an earlier trip with cruise
company Silversea, we heard about a new ship that
would do an inaugural 51-day voyage through
  Barbados, French Guiana, Brazil, Uruguay,
Argentina, Cape Horn, the Chilean fjords, Peru,
Ecuador, Costa Rica, Guatemala and end up on the
Mexican Riviera in Acapulco. So finally, we did the
once-in-a-lifetime thing and booked two berths on
  the Silver Spirit.

PHOTO: Paradise: Grenada is still untouched by mass tourism.
Wendell Rodricks
See http://www.livemint.com/2010/02/18204616/You-need-visa-power.html

That was the easiest part.

A trip as long and as varied as this comes with its own
complications. For instance, visas. We could not apply too
early since the papers would be valid for six months only. So
in December we filled out forms: I had valid US, EU and UK
visas in my passport, but as an Indian, I still needed seven
more visas -- for Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay,
Mexico and Barbados.

Along the way, we discovered that Barbados has no
representative in India. Ask for a visa in Singapore,
someone suggested. Get on with the other visas, I bellowed.
Two visas later, we were told, Barbados is not represented
in Asia. You have to call London. I did. They asked us to
courier our passports. But no courier was willing to do this.
Besides, our passports were in Delhi, doing the visa rounds.

Call the immigration at Barbados. Maybe they will grant you
a visa on arrival. A week later, I was told, No visas on
arrival, sir. But you can apply and we can give you the visa
in three weeks. Three weeks? We are two weeks away from
departure!

Meanwhile, Argentina was throwing a fit: Your ship is going
to the Falklands. We don't recognize that name. Reapply with
'Islas Malvinas'. I curse the Falklands War and reapply with
newly attested fingerprints and affidavit.

Finally, all visas are in the bag -- except Barbados, the
embarkation point. Five days away from departure.

So, we cancel Barbados and land in this paradise called
Grenada, the Silver Spirit's second port of call.

Arriving in Mumbai from Goa after an hour-long
plane ride, we catch an Etihad flight at 4am, land
in Abu Dhabi and, after 4 hours, board the plane
for New York. Fourteen hours of pampering later, we
touch down at a freezing JFK, New York, and take
off again 10 hours later, amid snowfall, for San
Juan, Puerto Rico. Just the sound of those words is
enough for my heart to sing West Side Story songs
-- or maybe the sunshine has something to do with it.

served at the hotel. Wendell Rodricks

A delicious Creole lunch at Raices restaurant later (my
partner Jerome has a pork chop double the size of his thighs,
while I savour a Mahi Mahi fish), we see the sights over our
six-hour transit: Old San Juan, a beautiful Caribbean city
within high fortress walls, is a delight.

Then to Grenada, where we would board the Silver Spirit, a
two-hour ATR flight away. The ship will be our home for the
next 50 days. Our verandah will keep the coast in

In the 20th century, it took on negative meanings particularly in the

[Goanet] Dev borem korum

2010-03-17 Thread Domnic Fernandes

We grew up using the Konkani greeting wishing people in the morning thus:

Dev boro dis dium (May God grant you a good day.)

The reply to the above greeting is: “Jezu kurpa dium [tuzo dis boro
zavnk.]” (May Jesus grant you grace [to make your day good.])

In the afternoon, evening and at night, we use the following Konkani
greeting(s):

“Dev boro donpar dium.” (May God grant you a good afternoon).
“Dev bori sanz dium.” (May God grant you a good evening).
“Dev bori rat dium.” (May God grant you a good night).

Unlike in the morning, the responses in the above three cases are as
follows:

“[Dev] Tukai [boro donpar] dium.” (May God also grant you a good
afternoon or Wish you the same.)
“[Dev] Tukai [bori sanz] dium.” (May God also grant you a good evening
or Wish you the same.)
“[Dev] Tukai [bori rat] dium.” (May God also grant you a good night or
Wish you the same.)

We do not ask for Jesus’ grace again because we already asked for it in
our response in the morning.

Dev borem korum.

Whenever I've used Deu borem korun or Deu boro dis dium in the past,
I've always heard
the response, tuka-i-dium. Doesn't kurpa refer more to grace- in
the religious sort of sense?

[Goanet] A Perfect Lesson For Us All

A Perfect Lesson For Us All

http://blogs.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/randomaccess/entry/a-humane-tigress-and
-heartless

The above article once again reminds us that we should not mess with nature and
nature's natural progression. We all agree that nature by all means is
beautiful, even though, we sometimes have to bear the ferocity that can
devastate humanity, be it the volcanoes, the tsunami's, the thunder and
lightening, fire, wind, waves, rain, fog, clouds, snow or hailstones, all these
nature's happenings have ever so entranced and enchanted mankind, and man is
still fighting a loosing battle to find the causes and the ways and means to
control them or curb them.

Scientists and geologists have spent their life time, going through hardships
and even death to educate us and the generations to come, about the
repercussions of messing with nature, but alas, when will it ever sink into our
thick skulls that we should leave nature, to it's self to create the required
balance, for the survival of this very planet.

History has been a witness to the wrath and fury of nature, which mankind is
still very much ill equipped to face, leave alone tackle or even dream of
curbing. On more occasions than not, man has invited the fury of nature unto
himself, and has been swept away each and every time. Even with all the wisdom
and the advancement in science and technology, man is helpless against the force
and fury of nature. So the only viable option to mankind is to leave nature to
it's own terms and progressions.

In Goa, our money minded politicians to make a fast buck, have played havoc with
nature by allowing rampant mining, destroying forests and hills, destroying the
precious vegetation, and driving wild animals away from their natural habitat.
We have been witnesses to the dwindling water resources, fertile lands being
scorched and to the loss of our flora and fauna as a result of this atrocious
attack on mother nature, as a result of which some of us have borne the fury of
nature, and what have we learnt from it, or have we ?

Of late we have been hearing of wild animals attacking humans, in and around
their homes. If our homes are destroyed don't we seek food and shelter else
where ? So too it is with wild animals. Once their natural habitat in destroyed
and devastated by mining, where are they suppose to go, find food and shelter ?
When we mess with nature, we invite the ills on ourselves. Wild life, left to
it's self in their own habitat, will not attack humans as long as their domain
is not invaded, but will man's curiosity and greed, ever let him do it ?

The above article is a perfect lesson for each one of us and more so for the
forest officials. Even though the tigress felt threatened, she just displayed
her natural instincts, but in no uncertain terms warned the man responsible for
the threat, to leave her and her cubs alone and was lucky, that he lost just one
eye rather than his life, in the standoff. Live and let live should be our
precise objective towards nature, if we want to live in harmony with nature.

Our corrupt politicians have been pacifying the environmental activists, by
setting up different commissions and committees, but have they at any time
followed the proposals, that have been made or recommended, to protect our
environment ? What exactly happened to the remains of the tiger, that were found
at Keri ? Or are the officials still trying to make Mr. Kamat the scapegoat, for
their short comings and inefficiency ? It goes to show just how indifferent,
our authorities are towards wild life and our environment.

Our present corrupt politicians certainly lack the integrity, basic ethics,
honesty, dedication and above all morals, to make Goa the Jewel that it once
was, by protecting and preserving what's left of Mother Goa and providing a
clean and constructive governance. Will I be wrong in saying, that just because
electricity comes from electrons, why should we expect morality and good
constructive governance from morons, we keep electing over and over again, thus
proving, we ourselves are morons.

[Goanet] G.O.A. (U.K.) Ltd: Big Faux Pas: Paul De Mendonca.....

2010-03-17 Thread Gabe Menezes
Legal and Admin Director wrote to me, letter received 12th December
2009, rejecting my resignation, furthermore giving me an ultimatum - might
as well call him 'De Mendonca, the ultimatum man!' This was when the G.O.A.
Board were fully aware that I was away on vacation.

I arrived back in the U.K. with just a couple of days to spare. The letter
stated that it was unacceptable that I had posted my resignation on Goanet,
even though I had sent my letter to the Company secretary, by recorded
delivery mail - in short, they were peeved that I had resigned on an open
forum as well.

This is what was quoted back to me by 'honourable Legal and Admin Dir. Paul
De Mendonca:-

''I quote below the relevant Article (5) on this subject.

''any such member may resign from the G.O.A. by giving notice in writing
to the Secretary..''

Then I was given a specimen letter, on how to resign by 'Hon Legal and Admin
Dir. Paul De Mendonca'

The specimen letter was to be addressed to the 'Company Secretary'. I was
further informed elsewhere in the letter to tender my resignation to the
'Company Secretary' or else they would call an E.G.M. to expel me -
apparently this was an unanimous decision by the General Body! Decision
arrived at, after hearing their side of the story; my letter of protestation
was not read.

The Board of the G.O.A. prejudged and only put their side of the story and
directed the outcome at the E.G.M. Instead of following best practice
benchmark standard - they follow worst practice standard.

I replied, that according to the Rules, the resignation letter had to be
sent to the 'Secretary' not the 'Company Secretary' as stated by' Hon Admin
and Legal Director, Paul De Mendonca. The only reason that I had sent my
letter to the Company Secretary was because the Secretary would not
correspond with me. This is an example of a person at the helm of the G.O.A.
who is supposedly a 'Legal and Admin Director' but one who can't read or
does not know the difference between a 'Secretary and a Company
Secretary'...but still wants to show me the way!

The Secretary and I had a big fall out some years ago and that is why she
refused to correspond with me - even though I was a Life Member. She had
written a letter to me requesting that I support her pet Charity - a young
girl who needed funds in the region of £50k for a cochlear implant - the
Secreary, wife of the President, applied mild pressure or tried to coerce,
by stating that we were Catholics and that we should open up our wallets -
words to this effect were used.

I replied and asked her if she was a proper Catholic herself. It was meant
to question her marital status, as a Catholic. She understood me full well
and that is where the problem stems.

Time and money spent on the G.O.A.

I put in my own money, time and effort to save the Club, also in 1984 on a
visit from Hong kong, I immediately opened my wallet and donated on the spot
£500 towards a T.V. This was promptly stolen along with a safe which had a
substantial sum of money. The Police declared that it was an inside job. No
guesses to who was in charge then and who was the Financial Director at that
time!

I put in money to pay up the Debenture holders who would have every right to
foreclose the Association if they were not promptly paid on time.

This calamity arose because one Genius of a President had decided and
convinced the General Body that the funds that had been set aside to pay the
Debenture Holders would be better used to bail out his Board and their
outstandings.

In short, had I along with two others not stepped in to save the
Association, there would have been no assets to crow about now and
definitely no G.O.A. (U.K.) Ltd today.

It ain't a big task to run an organisation with no encumberances to stymie
performance, with income over and above expenditure.

Another piece

This week Galliard has been advertising a “luxury stock liquidation” of
new-build flats in Ilford, Essex, with two-bedroom apartments reduced from
£320,000 to £149,000. “This just shows how overpriced the properties were in
the first place,” says Kate Faulkner, of Designs on Property, the advice
website. “Buyers need to do their own research, and not be swayed by
promises of a ‘bargain’.

“Many who bought off-plan before the credit crunch fell victim to a slick
sales pitch from developers without consulting their own independent
advisers. For many it has been a very expensive mistake.”

The recent newsletter by the Board asks if they should buy another property.
Well why not -- in for a Penny in for a Pound. Averaging makes good sense at
this stage. Especially as there are oodles of properties in the same region
as the existing investment. Whatever happened to the mooted idea of buying
Office space?

Lastly, I received an acknowledgement of my resignation over a month later.
This is contrary to what the President

My dear Gabe,

I do not believe that I have the right to judge another person's sins.

The announcement, possibly, will accord the donor some form of

Yes, Mourinho's Inter pulled a good victory over Chelsea. My guess

409th CSB civilian retires after 37 years of service

Story by Sgt. Fay Conroy,
21st TSC Public Affairs

http://www.21tsc.army.mil/21tsc/Articles/2010/2010-03-15-054_409civilianretireswith37years.htm

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – Napoleon Bonaparte said that an army marches
on its stomach, which means that an army cannot march without support.
It can also be said that the Army cannot march without the support and
dedication of its civilian employees.

One such employee is Matano Gracias, a procurement analyst with the
Wiesbaden Contracting Center, Matano Gracias, a procurement analyst with
the Wiesbaden Contracting Center, 409th Contracting Support Brigade,
21st Theater Sistainment Command, retired March 16 after 37 years of
service with the U.S. government. (U.S. Army photo) which is part of the
409th Contracting Support Brigade in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Gracias
retired March 16 after 37 years of service with the U.S. government.

Originally from Caranzalem, India, a former Portuguese colony, Gracias
began working for the U.S. government in 1973 as an accounts clerk for
the quartermaster laundry in Frankfurt. After serving in various
positions in the Frankfurt area for 22 years, Gracias began working in
his current position in Wiesbaden.

“I don’t think I’ve met someone who enjoys his job as much as he does,”
said Lt. Col. Ralph Tremaglio, the command counsel for the 409th CSB,
21st Theater Sustainment Command. “While I’m happy for him to retire,
this command will take a huge hit. No one can replace him, and no one will.”

“If you ever want to know what real dedication is, he showed it with the
Frankfurt bombing and hasn’t let up since then,” said Tremaglio.

The year was 1985 and Germany was still a divided country. There had
been a rash of terrorist bombings on military installations. Gracias
had just started his new position as the deputy chief of the Regional
Contracting Office in Frankfurt. A car bomb went off in the parking lot
of the Post Exchange in Frankfurt Nov. 24. Thirty-four people were
injured in the attack that carved a 6-foot crater into the parking lot
and damaged the buildings. Gracias was at home on annual leave attending
to his wife, who had just had a baby, when he heard about the bombing.

“I called Mr. Meisegades, chief of the Regional Contracting Office in
Frankfurt, and offered my services. We had a meeting early morning the
next day, and I was put in charge of the project to rebuild the area,
said Gracias. “Contracts to repair the damages were awarded same day and
within three days the commissary and PX were open for shopping. The rest
of the work was completed by the end of January 1986.”

Gracias continued to draft and administer contracts throughout his
career, he also has earned himself the name of “fraud fighter” as he was
dubbed by Tremaglio.

“I have been working with Mat for 18 months, but I have known about him
for some time,” Tremaglio said. “He has probably saved the government
more money than anyone I know in the government.”

One of the ways Gracias has saved the government money is by
investigating cases of possible fraud. When a claim is made by a
contractor or civilian for a certain amount of money, Gracias makes sure
that the amount is correct or determines how much should actually be paid.

“If something goes through Mr. Gracias and he says that the government
owes you, then they owe that much and not a penny more,” said Tremaglio.

Although his years as a fraud fighter are almost behind him, Gracias
said he plans to continue his work even in retirement by continuing to
advise his co-workers.

I’ve worked hard and done my best,” he said. “I’ve offered my services
after I retired, free of charge.”

Gracias plans to do a lot of traveling with his wife now that he is
retired, he said. He has been married for almost 30 years to Annelore,
and they plan on enjoying life and relaxing as much as possible.

[Goanet] F.M. Hussain

2010-03-17 Thread manuel tavares
India's Banishment of Hussain is a tragic affair motivated more politically
than anything else. Hussain is an artist and just like many well known artists
has produced nude portraits of various subjects. The Roman were not offended to
see their gods in the nude and which one of us was born fully clothed? Have we
become so narrow minded in our outlook that we cannot see art for what is? One
should therefore be appalled by the statues of King David and Other Roman
Generals like Caesar who are portrayed nude or nearly in the nude and showing
their genitals. What have we become? Are we moving forward or are we sinking
back into an intolerable society? Why blame the Muslims for being extremists
when we ourselves are portraying our intolerance in its ugliest form.
