[Goanet] Goan Literacy

2010-10-15 Thread Arwin Mesquita
Many Goans sing praises of their beloved MLA's/Ministers who apparently help
them with specific favours. Surely, if the system of governance was properly
working in the first place, there would be limited need for the MLA’s to
"assist" the people at the low micro level and these Politicians should have
been instead, involved at the much higher Macro level, of taking the state
forward in the right manner for the benefit of Goa & Goans. It appears that
Goa's Politicians are hugely favored and possibly support a highly flawed
system of governance, with high level of corruption, lethargy & incompetence
in the Government Departments; as a result of which Goans are forced to
approach the MLA’s for “assistance “and then be forever enslaved to the
respective Politician. Then as a source of “gratitude”, these people allow
corrupt Politicians to continue further with the Sale/Destruction of
Goa Environment & Identity; which is exactly what the corrupt
MLAs/Minister’s want!! Goans appear to be proud of their high
literacy/awareness, which is understood to be important for successful
democratic governance. But with such ignorance, I would argue if this High
Literacy rate has actually improved the state of affairs in Goa or is it
just an un-necessary Statistic!!

Vasant,
Two points:
1) Deepak Obhrai is an immigrant from Tanzania. He is one of
two Tanzanian immigrants who are now Canadian MP's.

2) PM Stephen Harper is a control freak whose policies have alienated
Canada from the world community.

Here is an interesting read from Canada's most popular journalist.
It will give all a better understanding on why Canada lost its bid.

Re: [Goanet] Goa: The Cruellest Inquisition

2010-10-15 Thread Frederick Noronha
Interesting! Since Priolkar, we've been lead to believe that the
Inquisition somehow targeted the Goan Hindu. Now, writers with Jewish
names talk about Muslim and Catholic-coverts as victims.
Interesting

When will we stop playing 21st century games with the intolerance of
the 16th (and maybe 17th and 18th too)?

Some of these guys seem to be like the ideolgical heirs of the Black
Legend creators... all using it for their own purpose. Will the
Portuguese now catch up with the Spaniards? While the Inquisition was
terrible, perhaps the continued use of its legacy (for political
purposes) is worse.

QUOTE

http://infao5501.ag5.mpi-sb.mpg.de:8080/topx/archive?link=Wikipedia-Lip6-2/186824.xml&style

The anti-Spanish Black Legend (in , leyenda negra ) is the
depiction of Spain and the Spanish race as bloodthirsty and
cruel, greedy and fanatical. The term was coined by Julián
Juderías in his 1914 book La leyenda negra y la verdad
histórica ( The Black Legend and Historical Trut ).
Underlying the Black Legend and its propagation is the
intention to defame Spaniards and Hispanics generally.

The Black Legend is distinguished from other similar hoaxes
created throughout history by its extension, influence and
persistence in time. The Legend influenced historical
understanding and accounts in most European countries and,
through them, much of the world. Its zenith may have come in
the 16th century, but it effects can still be seen some 400
years later.

Other similar Roman Catholic nations, such as Portugal , have
never been subjected to such treatment to the extent that the
Spanish have been. The Inquisition was also active in
Portugal, the Portuguese Jews were also expelled, slavery was
more important in the Portuguese colonies than in the Spanish
colonies, there were violent conquerors like Afonso de
Albuquerque and brutal governors like Mem de Sá . Perhaps
the long friendship between England and Portugal explains why
these events and practices were not seen through the same
lens as similar matters in Spain.

Re: [Goanet] Science for sale ...

2010-10-15 Thread Santosh Helekar
Mr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão here appears not to be able to see himself well
in his mirror. In a thread that is supposed to be about science for sale he is
expressing his casteist prejudice against fisherwomen, stereotyping and abusing
them in a cheap manner.

The main topic in this thread was ignored in the first place by Mr. Ferdinando,
along with two other Goanetters with the purpose of demeaning me. Please see
his post below:

http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-October/199872.html

If his mirror and judgment were not so clouded he would have realized that it
is he who has now introduced the topic of whose husband sleeps with whom, to
elevate to his own level, this discussion about lack of trust in medical
science and peer review, that was started by an author of a multi-part copied
and paraphrased series on the European inquisition.

Cheers,

Santosh

* Historia da Ethiopia, Pedro Páez (aka Pero Pais), Portugal, 1620

A Jesuit missionary who was sent from Goa to Ethiopia in 1589 and
remained in the area until his death in 1622. Credited with being the
first European to view the source of the Blue Nile which he describes
in this volume.

* Voyage historique d'Abissinie, Jerónimo Lobo (aka Girolamo
Lobo), Piero Matini, Firenze; 1693

One of the most important and earliest sources on Ethiopia and the
Nile. Jerónimo Lobo (1595-1687), a Jesuit priest, stayed in Ethiopia,
mostly in Tigre, for 9 years and travelled to Lake Tana and the Blue
Nile, reaching the province of Damot. When the Jesuits were expelled
from the country, he too had to leave and did so via Massaua and
Suakin. "He was the best expert on Ethiopian matters. After Pais, Lobo
is the second European to describe the sources of the Blue Nile and he
did so more exactly than Bruce" (transl. from Henze).

2010-10-15 Thread eric pinto
The Uzbek Turkcic Mongols had placed our provinces in the hands
of their Generals; they in turn morphed into Nawabs after seizing power grab
that produced little kingdoms like Hyderabad and Bijapur. Goa had a long
history of indegenous religion and culture under native Indian rulers. Bijapur
was not invited to invade Goa : Vijaynagar did ask daGama to evict them, but
not
to move in for good.  Nehru had few options available when dealing with the
likes of Nizams and Salazars :  We do not call Clinton names for ejecting
Milosevitch from Bosnia and Kosova.
The Portuguese people do not miss Salazar, and there is no nostalgia for
the former colonies and subjects.  They now conduct themselves in the civilized
manner expected of educated democratic societies.
Our history would have been quite different if Kakodkar's Congress has
assumed power after the first election to the Assembly. It was  mindless ego
that created a local parochial Party then, a doomed experiment that split the
vote and empowered a group that was honest about it's intent to dissolve the
special status Nehru so wanted to preserve for all in Goa.   eric.

Hi Selma,

Devadutt Pattanaik
[http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/devdutt_pattanaik.html] struck me
as making some very important points.

His view didn't strike me as arguing that "India is better", but just
different. Not just India, but a whole lot of societies which have a
non-linear approach towards time.

When viewed against the West-is-best, science-is-god, we-know-it-all
approaches, the points being made struck me as something interesting.
We could quibble about the examples he used to make his point, but
what he said did ring a bell while I viewed it. FN

Selma,
I agree with U fully. I do not understand why Frederick brings such crap to the
attention of Goanet, in the first place.

May I add: 'The Guy' has spoken nothing but crap and unholy crap that can only
come from persons who are misguided by myths that are a figment of imagination
of a 'ganja' loaded mind and the hallucination effect!

In my way of enlightened modern way of thought, there is no East nor West as
'boundaries';There is only Old and Modern. Those who choose to remain old and
irrelevant are Eastern and those who progress in many ways are truly Western!
Like South Korea, Japan and Singapore are 'Western' and many in the western
Hemisphere and in South Asia are Eastern and will always be that way until they
change their total mindset.

Perhaps that way, the twain shall never meet, for those in South Asia like
'this Guy' and the people and leaders from the RSS-BJP combine and also a la
Saffron, will always feel that East is East, and West is West, and the twain
shall never meet!

These people have sadly missed the BUS; as the East and West have MET already
and continuing; by shedding their old beliefs and customs and becoming modern
with a touch of the culture one is born into!
That is the way of the future not the Godhra or the Babri way!

GBA meeting at Azad Maidan (A report with clip & pics)

clip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Zn19byDKfM

Where is everybody?
For god sake it was not something  meant for a particular religion
Nor it was meant for a particular community or tribe or caste
It was for Goa or Goans as a whole.

Why should we go?
It’s not our Job, we don’t understand it any way.

What’s in there for us?
Meaning – Cash incentives, Free transport, snacks/drinks etc

(Some southern Political rallies etc, leaders offer Rs.15,000  to whoever
organises a bus full of people (say 25-30). Out of which he will
have to pay Rs.100 per head and the bus charges say
Rs.2000-3000). Snacks and water bottles borned by the politicians.
(Looks like we even accept cash to stay out)

Who else will be there?
Meaning Celebrities like Hema Sardesai, Remo Fernandes,
Oscar Rebello, Prince Jacob, Nana Patekar etc

(if nothing for us then..)

Ami paunaim
(We are not free)

Some may say 'Will let you know'
Meaning - after consulting their political leaders to whom they support

When the horse is thirsty, one can only take the horse to the pond
and not  the pond to the horse

Ami nidentle kedna utt’ttole gai?
(When will we wake up?)

At first,  on seeing the situation at around 4.30pm,
we even thought the meeting  might have been cancelled
as the CM is out of Goa etc

The police force  outnumbered  those who actually present.
Police were on all side of the Azad Maidan.
Infact, two of the 4 gates were seen closed, guarded by police
There were 5 police buses, one of Lady Police only.

Where is everybody?
If you take away  50 odd media/press persons,
the remainder would be less than 150 that’s around 5.30pm

Imagine, what would be the resultant figure if we  also
take away Moira, Tivim, Nuvem, Ambelim etc delegation /group

Amongst others, we also saw Fr. Erimito Rebelo,
Prajal Sakhardande, Florian Lobo etc

In this clip you will also see 2-3 speakers in the later half

organised with almost 2 months preparation by an organisation (no more a goan

Re: [Goanet] Konkani Proverbs (3)

2010-10-15 Thread Frederick Noronha
That's true. I too appreciated very much Fr Ivo's postings of Konkani
sayings, but feel that adding English translations would add value.

Here are some with English translations, from work done/collated by
Valmiki Faleiro:

Addveak tiddvem, addveak kaddvem
A crook encountered a crook-and-half

Adhar nasleli nari, bhonvta dara dari
A helpless woman goes from door to door

Adinch bail asli nachri, atam tichea paiank bandhleo ghagri
The woman was already a dancing nautch, now they have given her
anklets (tingling bells were tied at the ankles of professional
dancing girls)

Adinch xit xellem, tantunt bhorlem varem
The rice was already cold, now it's filled with air

Aforkim rai randdiecho, uzrim dhoni amcho
Behind his back the king is a son of a bitch, in his presence he is
our mighty king

Ag khaun, ingle agta (old: Agni khanu, inghalle hagota)
He who eats fire, shits coals

Looking forward to more contributions on this front... specially with
English translations. I recall the old-time Goanet posts which used to
be labelled as "Old Konkani Saying" (was that from Eddie Fernandes?)
and also the book of "Grams" (forget the full title) brought out by
some Goan network in Toronto. FN

Reply: It is a mortal sin to even think of GBA or for that matter any
eminent activist or organisation in Goa doing an instrospection. The problem
with many NGOs and many activists is that they begin to play God, detest
transparency and a code of conduct for themselves or associates, nor do they
appreciate introspection and evaluation. That is Goa's problem and the main
reason for public non-cooperation.

You may only get a rebuke like
"Better late than never!" or "You do it better if you can" as a
rationalisation. It is no better than how our politicians behave, if you are
not with me then you are against them.
As some speakers speak, the actual reactions from the public can be more
understood on the surrounding footpaths. It is more like the saying in the
new testament, "Pull out the log from your own eye before you remove the
spec from anothers eye."
People have responded to calls in the past but only to be exploited again
and agian by vested interests. People hire their own buses and come to
Panjim all the way from distant places while 20,000 got claimed by some
activiast as cost of transportation.
Issues may be very very genuine, I repeat very genuine, but motives of some
of those appearing in public to tackle them are questionable.

Antonio Tabucchi’s novel, on 17th October 2010 (Sunday), at 4.00 pm,
at the Instituto Camões premises.

Synopsis: This drama, set in 1938, chronicles a month in the life of
the Portuguese journalist Pereira. He is first seen as a lonely,
widowed, and overweight editor of the culture page of a second-rate

Pereira is fascinated with old literature; he is also obsessed with
death. He hires himself an assistant, Monteiro Rossi, to prepare
obituaries for old writers before they die. The young man and his
girlfriend are both passionate fighters against the dictatorship in
Portugal. They, along with a German Jewish woman, help to draw Pereira
out of his dusty old books and spark his interest in the current
political turmoil of Europe.

Rohinton Mistry's such a short journey in Mumbai academics - by Mahesh
Vijapurkar

October 13, 2010 15:21 IST

*Why did the city's decision-makers take a book off the Mumbai University's
curriculum without bothering to read it? Mahesh Vijapurkar wants answers and
remedies*

Rohinton Mistry's *Such a Long Journey *was taken off the curriculum of the
University of Mumbai in haste at the behest of a student and his father's
political party's student wing. The issue brings up three questions for
which society has to find answers and -- remedies.

One, should we allow a person, Aditya Thackeray in this case, who has, by
his own confession, not read the book, to sit on judgment on it and seek its
removal from the curriculum of a university?

Two, should decision-makers like Rajesh Tope, Maharashtra's minister for
higher education who says the book ought not to have been a part of the
syllabus in the first place without reading the book, be allowed to steer
the course of higher education? Adtiya Thackeray and Tope have been quoted
in a section of the media admitting they have not read it.

Three, is it appropriate to have a vice-chancellor who was picked to head
the university after an excruciating -- and now, apparently without a happy
outcome -- selection process so that the institution's academic excellence
is promoted but, now, just succumbs to a demand, promptly slices off the
book from the courses using his emergency powers, which is not known to have
been used before?

*Thought Aditya Thackeray would have an open mind*

A bit about Aditya Thackeray who, I thought, as a young man, exposed to good
learning in an institution like Mumbai's St Xavier's College, despite his
upbringing in a family known to believe that they have the given rights to
be moral arbiters, would have an open, inquisitive mind. I thought he would
discuss the book before he petitions the VC with a mob in tow. The least he
should have done is to discuss it with the fine faculty at St Xavier's.

On Dassera, the Yuva Sena, a youth wing distinct from the Vidyarthi Sena, is
likely to be launched by the grandfather, Bal Thackeray in the presence of
Aditya's father, Uddhav Thackeray. Which means a mindset of intolerance, the
propensity to take quick decisions without rationalising it or understanding
its implications, the ability to shoot from the hip -- all move like DNA to
the third generation in the family and politics. My speculation is that
Aditya will head the Yuva Sena.

Now that the university has made such a short journey of the book on his
demand and having tasted first blood with such ease, will the young
Thackeray who shows all signs of being callow, not take to the streets and
demand that the book not be stocked, sold and read in the state? And that
just because some content in the book was not palatable to someone.

I would like that Chief Minister Ashok Chavan ensures that the book is
freely available. Since this issue of freedom to write, express and read is
fundamental to life, I would not mind if the CM even encroaches on the
autonomy of the university -- which we know is only a sham -- and ask Dr
Rajan Welukar to retrace his steps and restore the book to its earlier
status on the curriculum till the Board of Studies takes a call on academic
grounds. A constant review of the curriculum actually is the right thing to
do.

*Talibanisation of Maharashtra *

Maharashtra has been known to be progressive as a society and vigorous
discussion and debate are its hallmarks, but unfortunately it has been
sliding, given the number of books that are easily banned -- almost as
easily as changing underwear.

B R Ambedkar's *Riddles in Hinduism *for instance. James Laine's *Shivaji,
the Hindu King in a Mogul India *for instance. The movie *Fire *for
instance. All these are instances of decisions under duress, not cold,
calculated choices made after due deliberation.

The outcry about the Aditya Thackeray misadventure and Rajan Welukar's
compliance to the demand had been muted, first heard of in one single
newspaper after which it did not pick up steam in other sections of the
media. Which, to say the least, is quite mystifying.

Only now does one see some well-argued protests, the first to go on record
being Dr Aroon Tikekar, the feisty protector of intellectual freedoms, then
Fr Mascarenhas, principal of St Xavier's which Aditya attends. Then there
has been a protest and petition online, which I have signed after writing
about it on my own blog. But the fact remains that the outcry has not been
loud enough and this emboldens the Thackerays and the Welukars of this
world.

The sad thing is that though the Supreme Court has upheld the right to keep
James Laine's book in the hands of the readers, the Maharashtra government
has ensured that it doesn't happen. It possibly does not want a headache or
hurt the so-called

[Goanet] Democracy attains a new low in India

2010-10-15 Thread Nisser Dias

Democracy attains a new low in India
By Nisser Dias
nisserdias at gmail.com
SMS to 9422437029

The recent development over toppling games of BJP led Karnataka
government has its fall-out on democracy and sadly our democratically
elected politicians irrespective of political party they belong,
demonstrated that they will stoop to any level or even act
undemocratically to either grab power or cling on to it.

But in this case the Congress led government in Goa bled democracy
further by refusing leaders of BJP unit in Goa to meet their own
partymen at a luxurious hotel in south Goa. 16 MLAs had rebelled against
Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa and withdrawn their support to
his government. The rebel traveled from Karnataka to Chennai to Bombay
and finally arrived in Goa and set their tent in Goa.

It was but natural for the BJP party bigwigs to urge its partymen in Goa
to convince or even induce the rebels not to topple its government. But
the government had no business to thrown a security cordon of police
around the villa of the resort where the MLAs were housed. If the rebels
did not want to meet their partymen or the party emissaries for a
dialogue they could leave instruction with the hotel staff that they
needed absolute privacy, if the rebels felt that they still would not be
safe they could have requested for additional security near their villa.

Now lets us consider that the Karnataka rebel MLAs including the
independents requested the Goa government for police protection, the
government could well do by posting some policemen or police officers in
the lobby of the hotel to deter troublemakers. But dispatching most of
the top brass of police officers from south Goa along with a huge
contingent of police with direction to throw a cordon around the villa
making it a virtual fortress was unacceptable. This very fact made the
Congress led government in the state an abettor to defections and the
presence of Home minister Ravi Naik, PWD minister Churchill Alemao and
Power minister Alexio Sequeira at the resort in company of the rebels
endorsed the BJP’s claim that the Congress party was involved in the
toppling games in another state.

The politicians might say that this is politics but we should not forget
that we live in a democratic country and just as the disgruntled rebel
MLAs have a right to dislodge its government and the opposition parties
have the right to support such a move, party leaders of rebels have
equal right to convince them not to topple the government. But what the
Congress led government in Goa tried to do is drill another nail in the
coffin of democracy by trying to deny BJP leaders in Goa to meets its
rebel party, this is not acceptable. This is an indication that Congress
party crucified democracy.

Actually we should not raise eyebrows at the presence of Home Minister
of Goa Ravi Naik being present at the hotel with the BJP rebels as he
too thrives or rather gets kicks out of toppling games. I say this
because he has distinction of being the shortest serving chief minister
of Goa. After a successful coup against then chief minister Dr. Wilfred
D’souza he attained chief ministership only to be ordered by the High
Court to step down in just four days. Here the High Court had endorsed
its mark that Ravi and gang had illegally, unconstitutionally and
undemocratically toppled Dr. Willy’s government

Now let us see how BJP butchered democracy to stay in power in
Karnataka. After their efforts failed to convince the rebels to withdraw
the letter of withdrawal of support to the Yeddyurappa government a
petition for disqualification of all the rebel MLAs was filed before the
Karnataka speaker who promptly within hours decided the matter and
passed an order disqualifying all the rebel MLAs. Here is an indication
that the speaker either acted in a biased manner or was forced by the
top party bigwigs as it was unfair to disqualify the independent MLAs.
Even in the case of BJP MLAs they have rebelled and not defected to any
party so where is the question of defection. Secondly it is very rare
that petitions before the speaker are decided in such a hurry. In some
case disqualification petitions are never decided at all and when the
five year term of elected representative ends the petitions become
infructuous.

The Karnataka government seems to have taken a leaf from Manohar
Parrikar’s book. In 2005 when his government had lost majority, a
disqualification petition was filed against then independent MLA
Filipeneri Rodrigues as he was the part of the group that withdrew
support to the BJP led government. On the day the motion of confidence
was to be placed in the house, the speaker disqualified Filipeneri
Rodrigues and asked him to leave the house. When he refused policemen
were called to bodily lift out of the house. As commotion prevailed the
motion was put to vote and decided in Parrikar’s favour. It was in 2002,

The Goans of Arusha Trust (G.O.A.), are proud to have their website. Thanks to
Sebastiao Fernandes (a.k.a. Seby) and Alain Randria for creating this website.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN:
Welcome to our website and thank you for spending time to know about us.
Geographically, we, the Goans of Arusha (G.O.A.) are located in the
northern region of Tanzania.

We are joined by the Goans of Moshi to be in our ambit.
Arusha is the mid-point between Cape Town and Cairo while Moshi lies on
the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain of Africa.

The G.O.A. is a registered Trust. In addition to social gatherings, we
look into welfare issues to the extent we can manage, and we integrate
with other communities.

Since its formation in 1990, the G.O.A. has steadily grown and has now
received recognition from Goan communities within East Africa.

We are happy to share our experiences with the rest of the world and
we hope this will propagate to the generations to come our traditions.

In ending my note, I wish to thank the past and present managing
committees and the community members for their tireless efforts to
keep our trust serving at all times.

[Goanet] My world is always better than your world...

2010-10-15 Thread Venantius J Pinto
Blissful condescension! Mind numbing--the cocky way Pattanaik explained
terms. Practically laid the patta/dandpatta on his speakers heads. Elysium
= *Champs*-*Élysées? This guy attempted to connect every tradition to
express his Self! You see, you see, again and again and again. Comparison
between a ballerina and an a Kuchipudi dancer?! Taste?! You see?! The music
part was utter trash. *

[Goanet] Tiatr ‘Earth’s wealth’

2010-10-15 Thread JoeGoaUk
Tiatr ‘Earth’s wealth’

(wealth from sand)

Once again, it is all about selling our land to outsiders etc

In a household, there live three brothers.
One brother Donald (Babtist Crasto) and his wife Sera
(Jolibia Fernandes), Second brother Roger, a mentally
retarded (Playwright Jose Fernandes) and the third
one Godfrey who is abroad (Anthony Pereira) shown
only during the second half.

In another house, there is a Konkani/Hindi speaking
lady Sarpanch (Liberata Fernandes) and her daughter
Tasha (Valency D’Souza) and cook Agustin (Allwyn).

Plus a Salman dada or goonda (Michael D’ Costa or
Michael de Chandor)
And outsider Hindi speaking builder  Nazir
(Ronny Tavares or Rons)

Yet, there is another sort of NGO, but this one entirely of
kids Thomas (Joliber Fernandes), Nikita (Sonali Naik) &
Dolly (Muriel Estebeiro or baby Muriel)

Comedy part: Pasku the 3 brothers' cook (Sucorro Colaco),
Police Havaldar (Armando Mendes) and
Agustine who spell his name on a pedr/slate
as ‘Agust3’ (Allwyn Rodrigues)

In the end, the Tiatr says when we die we leave
behind everything and go into 6ft long-2ft wide & 3ft deep grave
 covered by the  earth (Sand)
and we belong to earth and hence earth’s wealth

MATIECHI GIRESTKAI a tiatr written and directed
by Jose Fernandes (Associacao Academica de Majorda-
Utorda-Calata, Majorda Goa) staged on 14th Oct. 2010.
This was the 13th of the 21 shows in the ongoing  36th
All Goa Tiatr Competition organised by Kala Academy.

Like yesterday, today’s tiatr too was like a family oriented.
If we had father-mother and two sons, today we have
father-mother Son/Daughter.

The playwright Jose Fernandes, his wife Liberata,
Daughter Jolibia and NGO kid Joliber.

Again, this was of no fuss no frill Tiatr , yet done well
Rons role as an Arab (except no cassock on) was good.
So, also Michael de Chandor.
Lady Sarpanch did pretty well too.
However, JoeGoaUk’s top prize for best acting  jointly goes
to Anthony Pereira and Jolibia Fernandes.

Coming to songs
There were 1+12 songs
Opening by Playwright’s son Joliber
Other singer were
Rons (2),  Melind Fernandes (2), Liberata Fernades (2),
Valency  D’Souza (3), Michael D’ Costa, J
olibia Fernandes, Sonali Naik (2), Rocky Dias (2),
Baptist Carasto, Muriel Estibeiro (2)

All songs were good but  child artistes Sonali Naik and
Muriel Estibeiro share the top prize for (solo) singing category.

Extra:
At the start, there was a considerable delay, something
went  wrong. Looks like, it then had be done manually –
The scrolling list of artistes (oncreen display)
which was so tiny was not enough bright to be able to see
or read.

Although the actors/singers did pretty well, it did appear
that some dialogues/Actions given to them were not fitting
to their ages.
e.g. The Kid crusaders seen in argument with the builder, goonda,
the sarpanch etc at the same time they were
shown as kids playing on a sea-saw (see pic).  Also, at
one stage, a lady went inside to bring some drinks to the
kids but handed over tiny bars of chocolates instead
(one each). I guess this type of tiny tots crusaders  is OK
on TV episodes.

Secondly, Mentally challenged (Retarded) man having a
mind of a  4-5 year old, sent to prison for he had injured
not another kid but the Salman dada/Goonda.
which judge will send such persons to prison?

One of the crusader-kids (Baby Muriel), who was a
tenant's daughter in a property, the builder  invite her
to Sapancha’s house.  He offers her a one apt.
Plus Rs.1 lac as compensation (for giving up their
tenancy  claim) but the kid ask for more i.e. 2 Apts +
10 Lacs and the sarpanch the builder agreed, the
deal sealed.
(perhaps, some of our NGO members too dealing in
like  this?).
Why the kids parents (if any) were called in for
such settlements?

Sarpanchas cook always poking his nose
(against srapanch) whenever  there is a conversation
between the sarpanch and the visitors in the house.
Sarpanch warns him of reporting him to the police which
she did, and the cook even got beating from PC
(road Scene) for disobeying sarpanch.
Why report to police? Could not she sack him instead?

Kids too seen overacting at some stages. e.g. sobbing
when another kid sobs etc

The title suitability also did not make much sense.

We don’t remember watching a quartet song.
We understand that besides, Solos and duets/duos,
there must be at least one Trio and one Quartet as per
the competition rules.
I think there are at least two more who missed on this
and one on both.

OK, let see the stage pics

[Goanet] My world is always better than your world...

2010-10-15 Thread Carvalho
Dear FN,
Rarely have I come across a talk as full of nothingness as this one. First of
all, he implicitly assumes the Indian way is superior but more damning that
that, he assumes that old stereotype, East is East and West is West and ne'vr
the twain shall meet. In my experience, I have never come across human beings
that are fundamentally different. We are cosmetically different but never
fundamentally, never in aspirations and hopes. And this is what unifies us.

The world is changing because it is challenging every bit of nonsence that has
been placed before us by way of religion. The choice before is not whether we
shed our Indianess, the question before us is whether we shed processes that
don't work. They haven't worked for centuries and they will not work in the
world that we have to live in, which calls for the most efficient use of
resource and concepts. And in the end, there always is a one best way of doing
things. When we discover it, we call that progress. We may do this in terms of
technological advancement or ideological advancement, but the evolution of
human
society necessarily calls for the culling of ways that don't work and embracing
ways that do.

This "our standards are different from their standards" is in my opinion, a lot
of brown stuff being shovelled around.

Best,
selma

Re: [Goanet] Konkani Proverbs (3)

2010-10-15 Thread DAN DRISCOLL
Will there be a chance to see English translations of these? Two English
versions of Tamil proverbs: "He who has killed a hundred men, is fit to be a
Doctor"; "The tall palm tree gives no shade".
