[Goanet-News] Citizen journalism engages Goa
Campaigner Roland Martins, an advocate of the cause of info-activism, speaks at the citizen journalism training: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fn-goa/5169417883/ -- Citizen Journalism engages Goa Goa. Nov. 12. Panjim. Close to 40 participants from Goa, Delhi and Karnataka gathered for the first day of the three-day Citizen Journalism Workshop organized by the JM Foundation for Excellence in Journalism in association with the Goa Union of Journalists. Held at the IFB (Inspectorate of Factories Boilers) in Panjim, the workshop was inaugurated by journalist and author of accalaimed novel “Skin”, Margaret Mascarenhas. During her inaugural talk, Mascarenhas said, “Citizen Journalism is a great equalizer between an active citizen and mainstream media.” Reading from her account of the revolutionary radio station started by Che Guevara, Radio Rebelde, she spoke about the vast possibilties of citizen participation and citizen journalism, especially its ability to herald change. Also, Mascarenhas pointed out the need of citizens participation in a democracy. “With technology easing up,” she said, “citizens have no excuse not to participate.” Earlier, Prakash Kamat, president of the Goa Union of Journalists said citizen journalism both complements and supplements mainstream media. Kamat also used Gandhi's dictum about giving more democracy if democracy fails and said, “If journalism fails, then give more journalism.” At the same time, however, he cautioned that citizen journalism should not fall prey to false propaganda. Welcoming the participants, Shishir Joshi of the JM Foundation for Excellence in Journalism exhorted them to become active agents of change through the practice of citizen journalism and reporting on issues that affect the lives in their communities. Among the sessions on the first day were two sessions on civic engagement and consumer protection by Roland Martins, founder GOACAN, who enthralled the participants with the possibilities of civic activism and also showed ways in which the participants could engage within their own communities. Martins said, “There is ample scope for participation. We must also appreciate what we have.” He said that after 450 years of colonial rule, the people in Goa need to value what they have, and work towards becoming an emancipated citizenry. Other sessions included one by advocate Jamshed Mistry who has been engaged in restoring safety measures on the beaches of Goa. Mistry spoke the legal ramifications of citizen journalism and citizen involvement, and how ordinary citizens have been able to bring out significant changes in the laws of the land. Sudesh Arlekar, Secretary of Goa Union of Journalists, and Aloke Thakore of JM Foundation were also present. Tomorrow's sessions include a session on Right to Information, a session on policing by Senior Superintendent of Police, Goa, V V Chaudhary, IPS and sessions on writing by Aloke Thakore. Your message below re 45% Goans alcoholics, AA statistics reveal First of all, the person's name who wrote the exaggerated article is Lapitt which means kind of naughty. AA are from the same earth we live on and many of them are hypocrites who drink after their meetings are over. Its the same old story, many are called, few are chosen. Let not the Goans down ever. If AA data is to be believed, approximately more than 45 per cent of Goans consume legal alcohol – way ahead of the Indian average of 25 per cent for other States. It is estimated that there might be about a lakh of alcoholics in Goa. About 32 per cent of rural family income and 24 per cent of urban family income is spent on alcohol in India. Says noted psychiatric Dr Ashish Deshpande: “Medical fraternity believes that compulsive, impulsive and uncontrolled drinking of alcohol is a disease rather than a disgrace. All over the world, treating alcoholics has been a challenge to medical community. All the efforts to help the suffering alcoholic finally boils down to the 12-step programme of AA”. [Goanet] FOR SANATAN, THE 'DEMON' WAS IN A BJP-MAN'S DIWALI FUNCTION (GOATNT)
FOR SANATAN, THE 'DEMON' WAS IN A BJP-MAN'S DIWALI FUNCTION (GOATNT) Panaji: The Diwali-eve improvised explosive device (IED) blast carried out by members of Hindu right wing group Sanatan Sanstha (SS) targeted a popular festive gathering organised by a local Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) leader, a local trial court heard. Rupesh Mahatme, the president of the Goa unit of the Bharitya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), a youth wing of the BJP, told a special trial court instituted to try the 2009 Diwali-eve blast in Margao, 35 kms from here, said that 15,000 persons had gathered at a narakasur effigy competition (a mythological demon slaying event held in Goa on the lines of Ravan vadh in other parts of the country) organised by his ‘Solid Party’ Trust and was attended by chief minister Digambar Kamat, who is the local legislator and Damodar Naik, a BJP legislator. “For the last six-seven years the members of Sanatan Sanstha used to object to our holding the narakasur effigy competition and they used to complain to the Collector of South Goa,” Mahatme told the trial court. Re: [Goanet] Goa Caju Feni
Vivian, Like many goans and other sons of the soil who love their organic brews and the distillates thereof you show a true affection for the urak and the resultant fenis. One must be aware that more than a little of this nectar of the coconut and cashew apple fruits too often , especially with the 90 to 95 proof strength and the anacardic acid associated with the cashew mash used can prove deletious to your gut linings..ask the older doctors around your Socorro/Porvorim areas for their views. Besides sometimes the metallic piping used in distilling ( other than the bamboo you spoke of ) may have traces of heavy metals (Cd, Bi,..etc). I personally do not mind an occasional tipple.. but woul advise against large qties. daily. - Original Message - From: Vivian A. Re: [Goanet] The Third Thursday Goa Book Club... an invite
Great. Will surely try to be part of it. My *'bullets'* are meant for discursive deliberative process; moving ahead with the idea is best option for now. On Fri, Nov 12, 2010 at 12:15 AM, Frederick Noronha f...@goa-india.orgwrote: The Third Thursday GOA BOOK CLUB : AN INTRODUCTION TTT Goa Book Club seeks to promote the reading of Goa-related books (books by Goan authors, books on Goa, and books in any way connected with Goa). It is an initiative of Goa,1556 and is hosted by Broadway Book Centre, Goa's largest bookshop located on 18th June Road in Panjim. It will meet on the Third Thursday of each month (unless otherwise notified). Besides real-world meetings, it will also encourage interaction via cyberspace -- among those interested in the subject of books related to Goa. Meetings will begin at 5 pm sharp on the Third Thursday of each month at Broadway Book Centre, Panjim. Closing time will depend on the convenience and interest of members present. Rules: The club is open to all. To join, sign up at the moderated online mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/goa-book-club Online discussions related to Goa-books (in any language) will be encouraged. Off-topic posts will be disallowed. To attend a meeting -- which will be announced in advance via the above network online -- please confirm you participation via SMSing (at least 24 hours in advance). Send SMS to Leroy Veloso or Frederick Noronha. For mobile communications, SMS is preferred, as the phone could be out of range or temporarily switched off. You can also email goa1...@gmail.com with a cc to leroymar...@yahoo.com with Goa Book Club in the subjectline. Participation at each meeting will be open to the first 20 who confirm their attendance, unless otherwise decided by the coordinators. The limit on numbers is being planned to encourage better participation. Tea and samosas will be served by the hosts. There is no charge for attending. However, there is a non-cash 'fee' levied on every attending member. This is to (i) bring along one Goa book, new or old, which you have read (ii) describe informally during the meeting your experience of reading it -- what you liked about it and what you didn't -- in 3-5 minutes.. feel free to focus on other relevant issues, including related books in this genre and how these compare (iii) pass around the book (at the meeting) for others to see and immediately return, and explain where it might be available for those interested. Every participant is a speaker at this event, so come prepared to speak briefly (and informally). Please stick to the maximum time-limit of five minutes. Occasionally, the coordinators may invite speakers to address the group on special topics related to Goa books -- preferably in short 15- or 30-minute sessions. Every attempt will be made to keep all meetings participative. Any locally-used (or other) language can be used in the discussions. If anyone has difficulties in understanding, we may request your help, or that of someone suitable, to translate. Books discussed could include titles published in English, Konkani, Marathi, Portuguese, Hindi or any of the languages in which Goa is written about. To promote awareness about, and visibility of, Goa books, the Third Thursday Club encourages members to exchange, swap or sell extra copies of their Goa books with one another. Members however agree that is not part of formal club activities; and each one is responsible for their own deals. Lists of Goa books available for swapping or sale may also be shared online via the mailing list. Sponsors (publishers, bookshops, authors, and others) willing to gift copies of Goa books as prizes (to be distributed during the meetings) are welcome to donate the same. Author-signed copies are specially welcome. Co-ordinators will organise contests at each meeting. Booksellers, publishers or authors offering special discounts to members of the Third Thursday Club are welcome to announce their deals on our list, or pass it on for distribution. Members are requested to suggest suitable activities for the club, including talks by writers or others passing through Goa, or located here. The first meeting will be on November 18, 2010 at 5 pm. All present before starting time will be entitled to take part in a free raffle, the prize of which will be a copy of a book that is of direct interest to us in Goa. [Goanet] StyleSpeak: Fruit of the Loom
StyleSpeak: Fruit of the Loom By Wendell Rodricks Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit caressed the sari exclaiming,” It feels so wonderful. It feels like the hands of the weaver have given it lightness, a softness….How can I thank you enough for what you are doing?” “Ma’am, wear it with the happiness it was woven with”, I replied. Over at 10 Janpath and at Lodhi Estate, the sari woven in the style of Kunbi weave enjoyed a similar reaction from the Gandhis. What a crazy two weeks this has been. I felt that the Gods and the planets were propelling my dream forward. Two weeks ago, my assistant Sheryl told me, “This is such an important collection. You need to document it on film. And we need to get someone to model it. I need photos for the Press”. Eyeball deep in fabric, I thought only of how to get the forty final garments completed in the two weeks. Fittings were looming up on 22nd October 2010. To accomplish a collection, we must aim to do fifty five ensembles and edit them down to forty. Edwin Pinto was given the designs for the shoes to resemble grass. He delivered in under two weeks. A team of villagers in South Africa wove the beaded belts, straps and bag handles for the collection. When I look back, it is amazing that things were falling into place like clockwork. In July 2009, I employed a young NIFT graduate Poonam Pandit to begin a weaving project and revive the Kunbi sari weave using natural eco-friendly dyes. By November, reluctant and terrified Goan weavers, who earlier wove only loin cloths and jodha ponchas in coarse cotton, finally produced the first stoles. It was time to move them to a full sari width of 45 inches. Understandably they were intimidated at the prospect of doing an entire sari. I designed the sari to incorporate Kunbi style lines, checks and ikat. By end September, we had not just the saris but woven fabric in manjista red, guava leaf green, iron ore black and indigo blue. On some looms, we managed to weave striped fabric for shirts and kurtas. I reminisced how everyone said it was an uphill task and this weaving project in Goa would not take off the ground. Exactly what I need. Nothing like a challenge to propel me into action. How the collection rocketed to the studio racks I have no idea. In the last week, confident that the studio in Colvale was up to do the fifty five garments I estimated, I remembered Sheryl’s request to do a documentary. One week to go, I called Sandesh Prabhudesai at Prudent television. He put me in touch with Sainath Parab from Santa Cruz who agreed to film the dyeing, weaving and studio shots I needed. He gave an estimate of costs but on hearing about the Kunbi sari weave revival, he refused to charge a rupee. “You are doing so much for Goa. How can I charge?” With passion and excitement, Sainath trailed us through dyeing vats and shuttles flying across looms. We did a four minute video to be played before the show. Somewhere along the way, the Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, joined in to support the project. It was a wise move since the video and part of the collection can have an impression at tourism fairs. Choreographers Aparna and Tanya in Delhi chatted about the show. “Apu is coming to Goa. You should talk and settle the details”, Tanya Lefebvre told me. We met at Café Coffee Day in Miramar. Apu was excited on seeing the saris and the fabric. “We should get some ladies who like cotton saris to come in on this show. Make some of them walk”. The list of cotton saris wearers … How many are there? Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Sheila Dixit, Anushka Shankar, Nandita Das. No way can we ask the Gandhis to walk. There was no time to present the sari and get a video byte either. Anushka is a fan of my clothes but recently married overseas. Nandita just had a baby. My partner Jerome warned “Please don’t get Bollywood into this cultural statement. I know we can get a Rekha or Malaika to do this but stay true to the project and make the sari the showstopper.” I called my Mumbai resident Goan friend, Theron De Souza, to do the voice over on the video. I could courier the video to him and could he do the dubbing in Bombay? This was a weekend and it meant I would loose two vital days; plus courier time. “Hey Wendell I am in Goa tomorrow. We will do it at your Altinho house. I have all my recording stuff with me.” As easy as that. The stars were smiling down. We recorded the voice over next evening. His deep baritone is the best voice in India. Sainath and DJ Troy Furtado began to mix the voice and music track onto the video. Troy does all my show music. A friend introduced me to T J Rehmi who did my Paris show music. I used four tracks he gifted me. Troy layered in the sound of the shuttle hitting the loom for the show music. On a river cruise own the Mandovi, I spoke to a writer friend about the project. “Hey listen, why don’t you call Nandita Das?

Another way to find out if caju fenni is genuine: Pour caju fenni in a kals (cup) and dip one of your fingers in it. Light a match stick and apply it to the finger. If the fenni is genuine, your finger catches fire instantly; if it doesn't, then you know it's of inferior quality. Cheers Goenkara! Moi-mogan, Domnic Fernandes Anjuna, Goa Mob: 9420979201 I would like to share a little secret with you all especially with people who know nothing about Cashew Feni and want to buy from retailers or wholesalers, first take the sealed bottle and hold it slightly inclined and give it a light shake, not a strong shake, if you get big bubbles that last a while, then you know it almost pure and good Cashew Feni, if you have small bubbles, disappearing fast then leave it alone, it's not worth it. If it is an opened bottle, the same process should be used but since you have the option, open it, the smell itself will tell you the rest. Arihant bags Princess for Rs 99 cr PANJIM, NOV 11 The Mumbai-based Arihant Ship Breaking Co has bagged the contract for the removal of the ill-fated ship M V River Princess. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) in its over two-hour-long deliberations on Thursday finally zeroed in on the company — Arihant Ship Breaking Co. Arihant had yesterday emerged as the lowest bidder with their quote of Rs 99 crore when the financial bids were opened for breaking the grounded vessel and towing away the scrap to seawards. Speaking to Herald, Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes, who is the member of the State Disaster Management Committee, confirmed the development. “Arihant Ship Breaking Co has been finalised as the contractor for removing M V River Princess,” Fernandes said adding that the decision came in view of the company’s lowest bid of Rs 99 crore. On being asked as to when the work order would be issued, Fernandes said, “it is now upto the government to issue the work orders at the earliest.” A senior official who was part of the meeting confirmed that among the shortlisted bidders — M/s Madgavkar Salvage Smith Salvage Goa, Resolve Salvage Fire Europe Ltd, UK and M/s Titan Salvage Pvt Ltd, — Arihant Ship Breaking was the lowest bidder as also the fact that it offered to remove the vessel within 180 days went into its favour. It is also only bidder that had actual experience of ship breaking whereas other bidders had expertise in salvaging, the officer said. Other three bidders not only quoted high price but also wanted more time to remove the vessel, which went against them, he said. Madgavkar Salvage offered to remove the vessel within 240 days whereas Resolve Salvage quoted three different rates offering to employ three different techniques and wanting time till January 2012 to complete the work. It quoted Rs 190.75 crore, Rs 245.85 crore and Rs 271.25 crore for three different techniques. Titan Salvage, a Singaporean company that was short-listed time however quoted high price than their last bid. While it offered to remove the vessel at the cost of Rs 125 crore some six months ago this time it quoted Rs 142 crore. http://oheraldo.in/news/Main%20Page%20News/Arihant-bags-Princess-for-Rs-99-cr/42823.html _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ _/ _/ tambdimati: the Goa review is a community blog of original _/ art, writing, music, news and commentary from and about the _/ smallest state in the subcontinent. check out the newest _/ member of the Goanet family daily at _/ http://www.tambdimati.com. _/ _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/
[Goanet] God and You
Albert writes:- Every moment of our life we ought to bind ourselves to the Father which is the main tree and we are the branches. We have to give glory to God and we will receive glory only when He wishes to. In God's kingdom there are no kings and no scholars except whom God wishes .Many times we glorify ourselves. Many times we crown ourselves and seek earthly glory. Earthly glory will cease to exist when the sun goes down .Riches make us acknowledged by those born in the earth and will return to the earth but the riches that God gives are eternal. We cannot glorify those which has no life. We can crown those which cannot move or talk. Our life should be God with us. While we hold our hands with God on one side we hold our brother's hand the other side. We have to love our brother who has no earthly riches and cannot pay us back. Many times we are too friendly with the haves and not bothered to reach our hands to those who have not. If you call yourself a christian then follow Jesus nd do not condemn those who are with him and for him for if we are with Christ then why put barriers ? Nothing on this earth can replace Jesus christ the son of true God. The bible cannot be replaced with any other form of item which has not come to us from christ. The bible contains words coming down to us from God either directly or through prophets. We cannot create history when we are not kings. If God is our king then the kingdom of God is best known to God alone and not to his saints or angels. Mary the mother of Jesus called God as her Lord and so it is our duty to put God on higher pedestal then place Jesus closer and imitate Mary as the role model of every human beings. Mary did not ask us to pray to her. She will not do that. She has told us to do the will of God and so the will of God stated in Genesis is Increase and multiple and fill the earth. Mary had concern for human beings but we her followers do not have any concern for others. We do not care for our parents when they are old. We do not care for our spouses and we do not love our own children . Then how can we be Mary's bakti ? Do not be dongis The dongis are pretending to be very holy. They pray like the pharises shaking their whole body as if God is sending on them fire from heaven. While we wear white clothes like the earthly netas our hearts are full of muck coming from the earth . Greed, hatred, jealousy and pride has been blocking our heart that we cannot allow the word of God to penetrate into the linnings of our heart. Be born again if your want to enter the kingdom of God. Nothing except Jesus can save you and those who try to put barriers between christian and christian by placing mother mary as an instrument to win your hearts doom to those type of leaders for hell is yours. _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ _/ _/ tambdimati: the Goa review is a community blog of original _/ art, writing, music, news and commentary from and about the _/ smallest state in the subcontinent. check out the newest _/ member of the Goanet family daily at _/ http://www.tambdimati.com. _/ _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/
Re: [Goanet] Is the US destined to doom?
Gabe is absolutely right. Moreover, the current oil cartel probably does not realize that the US has more oil than these guys can only dream of. There are billions of barrels of oil in Alaska - which the US can always tap if ever starved. For strategic reasons, I believe, the US is milking the rest of the world out of its oil, while leaving its own Alaska reserves untapped. To get an idea how big the state of Alaska is - imagine you can fit the entire surface area of India onto the map of Alaska and you'd still more room left to play with! The US isn't going anywhere. It is merely going through a rough economic patch. [Goanet] Councillors are paupers in the hands of politicians
Councillors are paupers in the hands of politicians By Nisser Dias nisserdias at gmail.com SMS to 9422437029 In the just concluded elections to the eleven municipalities in Goa, majority of new faces or rather personalities have been voted to oversee various aspects like the cleanliness, revenue, trade and infrastructure of our towns. I refuse to say that they have been elected to power because I am of the strong opinion that no man or women wants to hand over power to somebody else. In the least I would say that the urban population in the present circumstances has reposed only their franchise and not their faith in the miniscule section of people who either out of free will or cohesion contested the elections. I would not like to paint all the councillors with the same brush as there might be a few who think they can bring about a change. Their intentions have to be applauded. But the majority of the newly elected councillors in the present scenario have aspirations of not bringing about a change in the present circumstances but of climbing the ladder of politics as there is easy money to make where there is politics. It sounds better when reminded of an old saying, ‘It is all about money honey’. Or they are pawns in the hands of some politicians and politicians-to-be. I know that the councillors will take objections to my point of view but then if they had the interest of our towns in their mind and their heart, why are they part of the panels set up by dubious politicians. And knowing our politicians and politicians-to-be who do not have a good record at all. They work on the basis of commissions and their prime interest is to make money that will last them for generations. Infact one minister in the present cabinet during his deposition in a court of law at Quepem, when questioned about his profession said it was politics; it is on record at the Quepem court. Do we need further proof that our politicians have made politics their business and now they are expanding it by bringing in the family members be it in assembly or the panchayat or at the municipality level. Now coming back to the issue of panels being set up by politicians to indirectly take control of the functioning and administration of local self governing bodies like the panchayats and municipalities. When a politician or politicians-to-be form panels or set up candidates to contest elections the first thing that happens is politicians field their ‘Yes’ men and women. If at all these candidates are successful they are indebted to that politicians and all throughout the tenure the councillors or panchayat members are forced to do their bidding even if it goes against the personal belief of the councillors. Thus the mandate given by the people to the candidates to carry out development is dashed ironically because the councillors are held in an iron grip by the politicians who are not answerable to voters for the decision imposed and carried out by the councillors. Secondly a new form of extortion, blackmail has emerged in the recently concluded municipal election due to success of panels floated by the politicians or politicians-to-be. Let’s take the example of the panel floated by the Revenue minister and Vasco MLA Jose Philip D’souza. Besides the violent fracas between him, his supporters and his party colleague former Tourism minister and Benaulim MLA Mickky Pacheco, only two from his panel got elected and that too happens to be his wife and brother. But the D’souza has the audacity to demand that his wife chairs the council. Otherwise he has allegedly threatened to stall, stop co-operation from the Urban Development and PWD ministries. The message he is trying to send to the group of councillors who have come together to form the next council is that if they do not agree to do his bidding he will be an obstacle to their functioning and thus to the development of Vasco. Various developmental schemes for the port town or the allocation of funds are not showered upon it by Jose Philip D’souza from his personal wealth, the council whoever might be heading it, should get it by way of right and not by way of choice or favour. And if at all there is any truth that the Vasco MLA tried to send such a message, then the people of Vasco ought to outright reject this man at the next assembly hustings. Coming Margao Municipal Council, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) general secretary Vijay Sardessai has managed to get seven of his candidates get elected as councillors and he is in a position of calling the shots. Another seven owe allegiance to chief minister Digambar Kamat who also had set a panel and both are trying to form the council with the support of others. Now Digambar Kamat and Vijay Sardessai happen to be members of the same party. At the same time it is an open truth that both these politicians have been at loggerheads from times immemorial. The only

[Goanet] FROM FEB TO AUG 2010 SUBODH KANTAK PAID OVER 31 LAKHS
From Feb to August this year the Goa Government has paid Advocate General Mr. Subodh Kantak Rs. 31, 81,000. This has been revealed by the Law department under the Right to Information Act. With this the total amount spent by the Goa Government on Advocate General Mr. Subodh Kantak since his appointment in Feb 2005 has amounted to over rupees five crores. Though Goa is the smallest state it has India’s highest paid Advocate General. Advocate General’s of Maharastra, Gujarat and Karnataka are never paid more than Rs 50, 000/- a month. Advocate Generals of Maharastra, Karnataka and Gujarat appear in the High Court only in constitutional and important matters, but Mr. Subodh Kantak appears in all sorts of matters just because he gets Rs 8000/- every time he stands up in the High Court. [Goanet] SONIA GANDHI's CHRISTMAS OBAMA's CHRISTIANITY..
Nobody has seen Sonia Gandhi visiting a Church in Delhi to attend Sunday Mass. Neither anybody has seen Sonia Gandhi celebrating Christmas or Easter. The case of Sonia Gandhi is similar to Barack Obama. Nobody knows whether Obama is a Christian or Muslim and nobody knows whether Sonia Gandhi is Catholic or a non-catholic. If Hindus were persecuted in America the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would have certainly raised the issue with US President Barack Obama. Just as Indian PM raised the issue of attacks on Hindu students in Australia with then former PM Kevin Rudd. But persecution of Christians in India is not of any relevance to Bill Clinton, George Bush, Barack Obama, Cameron, Mandela, Blair, Rudd and other World Leaders ( retired or in service) this explains why none of these world leaders have spoken with Indian PM on the problems which Christians face from right wing hindutva groups especially the Christians living in the states of Orissa, Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra MadhyaPradesh. The idiotic and boring sermons which the Clergy give during the Sunday sermons is not going to save Christians. In Kandhmal the clergy and missionaries fled to the safety of Kerala Tamilnadu leaving the Tribal Christians at the mercy of the Hindu Terrorist Groups ( rss, vhp, bajrangdal, etc) who are masquerading as Hindu Cultural groups. What if the Hindu Terrorist groups decide to replicate the anti-christian kandhmal experiment in other parts of India. Are the Christians prepared. There are only two options left with Christians in India – learn combat-commando training and be prepared for a holy war with the sangh parivar (rss, vhp, bajrangdal, etc) OR migrate to Christian countries as suggested by some Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders. Apart from the threat of Hindutva radicals the Christians in India are also facing many other problems like loosing their lands due to encroachment by outsiders and inability in getting government jobs, housing other govt. facilities BUT what is even more sad is that christians/catholics also face problems from rogue parish priests who misuse church funds, who illegally sale church properties and siphon off the money and who refuse admission in parish schools to children of poor catholics. It is very shameful when the parish priests during Sunday sermons talk of charity and serving the poor when they don’t practice what they preach. Protecting Catholicism is not just the duty of Popes, Bishops, Cardinals priests. The catholic parishioners should also do their bit by forcibly evicting rogue parish priests from their churches. Catholicism has died in Europe because of the separation of the church and the state, the secularization of the catholic church by the clergy and the extensive use of abortion pills by the European women. How can Barack Obama or anyone claim that India is a World Power when more than half of India’s population lives on Rs.20/- a day. The Christian (catholic, protestant, baptist) Missionaries will continue with their mission of converting the Dalits Tribals to Christianity and the Hindutva Radicals will continue with their mission of re-converting the dalits tribals to Hinduism. The only solution for this problem would be for the Indian Government to Ban the entry of Christian Missionaries Hindutva Radicals in Dalit Tribal areas. Indias Problems – Lack of Infrastructure, Industries, Job Opportunities in rural and backward districts due to which people from backward and rural districts keep on migrating into cities towns. No strict implementation of the Two Child policy in UP Bihar due to which the population of the Bhaiyyas Biharis keeps on multiplying and becomes a burden on the rest of India. Female foeticide/infanticide especially among the Hindus due to which the female population in the Hindu community has been declining at an alarming rate. No Fast track courts to deal with divisive politicians, arsonists, rioters, communal forces. No Fast track Anti-Corruption courts to deal with corrupt politicians, corrupt ias/ips officers, corrupt govt. servants, corrupt municipal officers, etc. Gabriel D’souza.

[Goanet] Citizen journalism engages Goa
[Goanet] Goa: Sex mafia on cocaine coast
Goa: Sex mafia on cocaine coast Tue, Nov 9 05:06 PM Yaniv Benaim aka Atala, the most colourful of Goa's Israeli drug dons, made headlines with a video on YouTube. His Swedish model-girlfriend named Lucky Farmhouse alias Amori posted the grainy, shaky video clip that became an instant Internet must-watch. An Israeli drug peddler revealed that policemen supplied him drugs stolen from a police godown. His arrest led to Goa's first drug-related gang war. In the video, Atala speaks about his drug operation and how Goan police on his payroll advised him of ways to avoid getting caught - don't buy a cellphone in your own name and change phone numbers frequently because your calls are monitored. This is the mafia, is how Atala describes the confederacy of crime between the police, politicians and the drug cartels. The amateur video shows him speaking candidly about his arrangements with Anti-Narcotics Cell policemen, including Senior Inspector Ashish Shirodkar. Nobody can touch me because I pay a lot of money, said Atala. He was arrested immediately. So were six policemen, including Shirodkar. Twenty-four kilos of hashish had disappeared from the anti-narcotics warehouse on their watch. Atala confessed that the police had sold the drugs back to him. Goa's Home Minister Ravi Naik explained that the vanished drugs were eaten by white ants. In the wake of the Atala scandal, skeletons tumbled out of Goa's political closet. The Opposition alleges that Naik and son Roy are linked to the drug mafia - a charge both deny. Amori claims she possesses a tape of her lover bribing a powerful Goan politician's son. The state is yet to send an investigator to Sweden to interrogate her and is resisting all opposition demands for a CBI enquiry. Atala was convicted of drug possession in 2006, but managed to avoid deportation by going underground. The side effect of Atala's arrest was the first gang-related murder in Goa. The police say a local bar owner at Anjuna, Sanprit Malvankar, was killed by a gun-for-hire for helping them trap the Israeli gangster. Things got murkier when police later caught a criminal who was allegedly given a 'supari' by a south Goa politician to kill Roy. More than the politics of drugs, it is the economics that is mind-boggling. The Enforcement Directorate is currently probing 400 cases of real es tate purchased illegally by foreigners, mostly Russians, using dirty money. Goa has become a principal hub of the international drug trade, apart from being a known centre of consumption. The happy-drug addict-syndrome that has made it a haven for tourists is a minute part of the story. Those in this lucrative trade estimate that drugs flowing out of AfPak are worth over Rs 5,000 crore. Most of it now lands on the comparatively unprotected Goa coastline. Mumbai and its hinterland are no longer a favourite landing area since the checks by the Coastguard, Navy, customs patrols and internal security have become more stringent post-26/11. As a result, Goa has turned into the favoured transhipment point for drug markets in South-east Asia, Africa and Europe. The police say that a large number of foreigners- mostly Russians arriving on chartered flights - bring in the drugs to Goa. However, 70 per cent of the drugs still arrive by sea. Foreigners who stay back manufacture synthetic drugs locally. The heady party drug, the CK1 pill, has become a craze in Goa. It is a combination of cocaine and Ketamine. Sold on North Goa beaches under the pseudonyms 'Blizzard' and 'Calvin Klein', CK1 is readily available in Candolim, Baga, Calangute, Anjuna, Vagator and Arambol. These synthetic drugs are also exported back to India at higher rates; the traffic controlled by drug dons like Atala who enjoy political patronage. The Opposition accuses the state police of being hand in glove with drug dealers. Compared to the size of the drug trade, drug hauls by law enforcement agencies are infinistimal in volume. In 2008, Goa's Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) seized drugs worth Rs 77.43 lakh. Last year marked the biggest haul ever - 64.28 kg of drugs worth Rs 1.17 crore was seized and 22 foreigners arrested. Sinful pleasures are available at Goa's rave and dusk-to-dawn beach parties, most of which take place at the 320 beach shacks along a three-km sandy stretch in north Goa. This year 46 kg of hallucinogens, including charas, ganja, cocaine and Ecstasy tablets, worth Rs 76 lakh was apprehended. Goa isn't exactly a haven for drug trafficking because it is nowhere on the scale of Punjab or even Delhi's Paharganj, says Veenu Bansal, superintendent of police, ANC, Goa. Political sources in Panjim say that the insignificant size of drug busts is because gangsters like Atala have powerful political links. The residents of Goa whisper that the real scandal is the political mafia they vote for. Edwin Nunes, a local political heavyweight is one example of the politics-drugs network. He owns

[Goanet] StyleSpeak: Fruit of the Loom
Hi Wendell, First of all congratulation to you, and your team on your Kunbi Saree project, its success, and the belief reposed in you and their God by the weavers. Fear of any kind is what it is to any crafts person/the artist (in the myriad of conceptions of the word), and just perhaps any entrepreneur, particularly when one moves into working/revitalizing. bring back the ghost on/of a hitherto different form. I am sure all this is true. One point that may interest you: You have a track record in the art/applied world of fashion, as also the world of dealing with people -- elite and the hoi-polloi. That is a given. But to be challenged, why would you need people who project which projects take off or stay on the ground! I would think the project as you conceived it had sufficient merit. As in, being door keepers of --- success and its attendant companions; cultural dispersions, value to identity, and sheer business potential which is incidentally the key and a worthy one at that. Again for sure. But reminisces, and the accompanying thoughts are exactly that -- they tell us things that the mind has been working through. Congratulations also to your well wishers, over the duration of the project and moving into the future. A suggestion: Consider inviting Goan artists living in Goa to contribute designs to this project. I think it will take your project in other directions. Of course look at your business/creative implications etc. Btw, am not asking for a response; merely shared my thoughts. However, if you do respond -- then share it on Goanet, or simply ignore. I am wondering if yours is the real enlightened way to check out feni :-) I have a much simpler way, one that works all the time. Whenever I get to Goa, I ask the locals to point out who produced the best feni in the village. I then march up to his house and ask him for the best bottles he has. When he produces some, I ask him what the price is, shake my head and tell him I will pay more for a better quality. The next day the supplier is at the house with a dozen bottles of the best feni produced in the village. The guy get a big tip and remembers me the next time I am in Goa. When in Goa, I live in Siolim which is, without doubt, the source of the best feni in Goa, so I know I am getting the best. For those who do not have the time to develop a relationship with the local supplier, the next best er, solution is available at PVV at the Mapusa Bazaar. You always get what you pay for. Even when not near Goa, I am still assured of the best feni since I rely on the same principle. Every year my folks go to Goa. Every year, my in-laws order a thousand items from Toronto. In return, I get two bottles of feni. Two bottles of the most expensive feni in the world. The music for this album was by the late Mariano Rodrigues (from MAPUSA) who was also the right hand of Alfred Rose when AR was recording with live band. Mariano also provided music for many konkani tiatrs n albums, namely for the first cassette of WILMIX, Neves Oliveira, etc The music quality in some of these old records is very good and one can hear even the faintest beats on cowbells...mostly used in the bands those days... to those who say the music quality maybe not so good in mp3's... I still think there is not much of a difference in mp3 n CD if you keep a higher bit rate. Re: [Goanet] Authentic Goan Caju Feni
I am told that Caju Feni is the third distill. I may have got the wrong information. I was given to understand that the first distill is 'urraka' the second distill is what is called in Bardez: 'cazulo'; and the third distill is 'Feni'. Could someone enlighten me what this cazulo is? Being from the South, I used to get supply from a person in Usgao who had a farm. But his Feni was very light and with copper taste at times. Probably from using copper vessels to distill. I now get my stock from Bardez which is much better. Re: [Goanet] Is the US destined to doom?
rajendra kakodkar wrote: It is lerarnt that $ 44 tn worth Venezuelan crude oil, which earstwhile was shipped to the US, is now contracted to be exported to China on long-term basis. China which had defeated the US in a major oil negitiations in Afghanistan last year, is now poaching right under the US nose. Result: the West would be starved for oil leading to another price spiral in oil riding the liquidity created by $ 600 bn quantitative easing. Chinese stratgy: Divert a portion of the money printed by the US (to stimulate productive economic activities like manufacturing, which create employment) to oil speculation. This could be a counter offensive blow from China in reply to Obama's campaign against trade imbalance created by undervalued Yuan. Bitain has already deserted Obama on the Keynesian path and has embraced austirity. --- Rajendra, You have taken a simple issue and made it seem complex. The simple fact is that the US embarked on two wars that it could not afford. It funded the wars, like all wars are funded, by borrowing money. The difference this time is that instead of borrowing the taxes from the citizens who have not yet started working, the US borrowed money from the Chinese. Iraq was where the US blew up their money in shock and awe. Afghanistan, is where they blew up their soldiers. As usual, Afghanistan did what it does best. Just like the Russians, the British and every invader since Alexander the Macedonian, the US will eventually come to its senses, declare victory, turn around, and leave. The poor US tax payer and those who are not yet US tax payers, will then be shafted with the bill for George Bush (43) and Obama's most unexcellent adventures. As far as oil is concerned, Canada and every other country is willing to supply the US with as much oil as it wants. The US also has a lot of untapped reserves near its shores. Oil is not the USA's problem. The problem with the US is the type of capitalism it now practises. The capitalism of the USA today is one that can declare a company too important to fail. These 'declared' companies are then given taxpayers money to operate. Let me make this clear, the companies that are making losses are given tax payer money to continue doing so. A second peculiarity of the current US system is that it now pays .25% interest to those who save their money. Since inflation is at more than .25%, in today's USA, you now get penalized for saving. Another prime example of how messed up the US is in is seen in the guy that runs their economic policy. He still insists that dropping money from a helicopter is an acceptable economic solver. Even Bob Mugabe did not go that far.. To answer the question in the heading of your post, yes, the US is heading towards economic doom. This does not mean a quick collapse. As an example, Great Britain began its economic doom in the 1960's and yet their standard of life (fifty year later) is far superior than say, the life lived in India today. Lastly, in all but the last 250 of the past 2,000 years, India and China have had the biggest economies in the world. As indigenous people in both countries wrestle the economy back from the central govts, look forward to an upswing in economic activity in both places. The increase in prosperity of both these countries will cause a downturn in the economies of others. Pure and simple. [Goanet] re : a competition of political styles in Goa.
I happened to watch, on an obscure TV channel, a program on the challenge in Brazil.. of the opposing styles of capitalism ( where powerful corporations from North America Europe and other western powers) found a way to live with a socialistic way of thinking that would benefit the poor and disadvantaged that survived a minimal existence in the favelas of rich cities and the rural areas of Brazil ...being constantly reminded that the nation ,though called an awakening giant ,has to live to the dictates of the I.M.F and the World. One realises that the desire for more profit in the West Europe clashed with the need for survival and improvement in developing countries . There maybe a parallel with the State of Goa ( one of the smallest states in the Indian republic ) and the richer more populous and industrial states that abound around, and to the north and south of it. While rich industrial corporations with the help of the Centre may make a killing on real estate developments and mining ventures they will reap the rewards to invest back in their home states..not giving a thought to how badly damaged they leave the state of Goa environmentalythe the NCP government in Delhi will cling to power closing their eyes to all degredation they cause to other states ( does Madam Sonia give a damn if tribals starve , if lands grabbed from them if it benifits the rich industrial families who are Congress supporters ? ) Does , for that matter, our CM care as long as his party , supposedly secular, triumphs at the next elections.?so that various NCP supporting groups like the mine-owner families and the rich supporters are still there to carry on the pillaging of the land, even if it causes pollution of the water-table . When we goans awake to find that the state is no longer a tourist attraction..it will be too late.to roll back history and stop the powerful from leeting us sink into decay. Whle I do not advocate the saffron supporting BJP party.i think we need to introspect before it`s too late !

Re: [Goanet] Was Goa invented?
With new sea-routes to Africa, Asia and Americas, the dawn of the 16th century changed Europe and the rest of the world. The changes were political, economic as well as social with the emergence of a new elite. The period saw the absolute monarch replace regional dukes and princes. For the first time a whole new middle class was formed based on commerce rather than military nobility. The changes in Europe at the start of the 16th century was presented on Goanet in an eight-part series entitled Europe and the Inquisition. The changes in Goa were also presented on Goanet in a multi-part series. One kind person (god bless him) put the entire article on the web in the link below, which I came across by accident. http://glenndabreo.com/?p=83 While 'the good' of Goa's colonization has been often described, 'the bad' and 'the ugly' are often ignored. Each of the ten changes described in the article could be a chapter by itself for someone looking for the socio-economic changes in Goa in the 1500s and the early impact of colonization on the land and its people. Please feel free to forward this link to those who may be interested in this topic. There are many un-answered questions about the period in Goa (16th -17th century) chief of which is the demographics of the population when the Portuguese acquired Tiswadi and 25 years later, the neighboring talukas . Unless one knows the precise demographics of the people IMMEDIATELY AFTER these became Portuguese territory, (after 75-100 years of Muslim rule) much of the discussion on the specifics of the colonial impact on the populace is conjecture; related to ones' educated guess or bias. As always feedback and comments to my article are welcome; especially when accompanied by hard facts and data.
