Reason and sanity demand that one ought not to believe in conspiracy theories. One also ought to refrain from dragging in accusations of murders by namesakes and insinuating names of people of communities, regions and religions other than one's own into a rational discussion. Re: [Goanet] Navatara Goan owner Carlos Tavora stands up against bandh despite threats and shows the way to all Goans
I once attended a residential seminar conducted by the All Goa Mathematics Teachers Association at Ramnathi. The conditions given by the Ramnathi Temple authorities for the use of the rooms and hall were fairly clear: No non-veg food and the veg food served had to contain no plant which was grown underground e.g. potatoes, radishes, onions, garlic, etc. beside other conditions. Again they were kind enough to supply the food and believe me or not it was wholesome, tasty and enjoyable. In North India, my friends used to be amazed to learn that vegetarians in Goa eat fish and mutton and eggs, whereas in the North Indian tradition, vegetarian means vegetables only. *It seems some vegetarians are more vegetarian than others!* -- Tony de Sa. tonydesa at gmail dot com

[Goanet] Dr Juliao Menezes
http://www.goenche.com/article_details.php?aid=94 http://www.goenche.com/article_details.php?aid=94 On 18th June 1946 Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia defied the ban and censorship and launched a Civil Disobedience Movement and gave one of those sparks that led to ‘Beginning of the end of Portuguese Rule’ in Goa. But those who gathered the wood so that the spark would turn into fire have been long forgotten; unknowingly or unintentionally is best left to our imagination, one such unsung hero of was Dr. Juliao Menezes. Dr. Juliao Menezes was born in Assolna, Goa on August 7, 1909 to Zeferrino Piedade Menezes and Salvacao Menezes. His father died at a very young age on the ship which he was working. He did his early schooling in Assolna and Panjim and after finishing Lyceum (Portuguese high school) he went to the Berlin University in late 1920s and completed his MD in Medicine (Dermatologist). While studying in Panjim he was greatly influenced by the patriotic writings and actions of Luis de Menezes Braganza and other rationalist writers. In Berlin he also took courses in Indian history - Indology. It was there that he met Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, who was studying Economics at the same University. He took active part in the Indian Students’ Union in Berlin, along with Dr. Lohia who was the secretary of the Union. It was later known as the unofficial Indian Embassy in Berlin during the regime of German National Socialism. Once in the 1930s when Dr. Lohia and Dr Juliao attended the session of the League of Nations in Geneva, they both booed at Maharaja of Binkaner, a representative of India, who was talking about peace. They were both thrown out from the gallery and such was his indomitable spirit. Lohia completed his Ph. D and returned to India in 1933 but Juliao stayed back and completed his MD. He returned to Goa in 1938 and reactivated the Juvenile Club de Assolna to spread rationalist thinking and Nationalist activities. But those who were brought up to believe in the myth of colonial supremacy frowned upon his ideas of emancipation that he struggled to stimulate among the youth. His speeches at a reception were reported to the authorities and strict watch was kept on him. One day when the Piazza Cross at Assolna was desecrated, the village elders pointed a finger at him and on this pretext the authorities branded him as a communist. The fascist police raided the library of the Club Juvenile and sealed the club premises and the library. Later the moveable items in the club and library were auctioned by the Revenue Department (*Fezenda*) and a curfew was imposed in the Assolna market area. It wasn’t easy for any individual in Goa in those days to make a dent in the public opinion that was controlled autocratically by the lackeys of the dictatorship. Goans of that time were brought up to be powerless, and as such, they were scared to make changes in their ways of thinking and break up the fetters that bound them. Frustrated, Dr. Juliao left for Bombay. There in 1939 he founded the Gomantak Praja Mandal, and in 1942 he launched a bilingual weekly Gomantak (Konkani and English) to liberate Goans from their servile mental attitudes. He kept in touch with Dr. Lohia who was underground in Mumbai and often gave him shelter after the Indian National Congress (INC) and Mahatma Gandhi gave call for ‘Do or Die’ in August 1942. Dr. Lohia expressed his desire to hind in Goa but Dr. Menezes advised him not to do so as the British agents were active in Goa just as in Mumbai. Taking the advice of his friend, Dr. Lohia escaped to Nepal but was arrested by the police in 1943. After his release he was arrested once again when he arrived in Mumbai in 1944 and was taken to a notorious prison in Lahore. After his release from Lahore in 1946, he came to Mumbai and met Dr. Menezes who examined and told him that he needed rest. He offered to take him to his village Assolna, Goa. Dr. Lohia accepted the invitation and arrived at Dr. Juliao’s place in Assolna on June 10, 1946. The news of Lohia’s arrival spread among some Goans, but when Evagrio Jorge reported it with biographical notes of Lohia in O Heraldo the news spread all over Goa. Dr. Juliao’s place in Assolna became the meeting place for many Goan intellectuals and political activists of that time, who went there to consult with Lohia and Juliao. It was there that the movement for Goa’s civil liberties was born. In that respect, Juliao’s house in Assolna is Goa’s historical landmark. Dr. Lohia decided to fight for the civil liberties of Goans. Till June 14, the two leaders met various important people from all walks of life at Dr. Menezes’ residence. On June 15 Dr. Menezes took Dr. Lohia to Mormugao at the invitation of the Nationalists and the next day they met in Panjim at Damodar Vidyalaya. But the main climax of the movement for civil disobedience arrived on June 18, 1946 at Margao, as planned. Goans – men and women came in flocks to welcome Dr. Juliao Menezes and Dr. Lohia

[Goanet] Cyprian Fernandes' Sunday Masala: English? Stop the sickness!
Title: English? Stop the sickness! By: Cyprian Fernandes Source: Goan Voice Daily Newsletter, Sunday 19 June 2011 at www.goanvoice.org.uk WHAT is this madness, this lunacy that is driving illustrious men and women to put their bodies on the line against English as a medium of instruction in Goan schools? Surely this is not a religious thing? I mean 25% per cent of the population which is Catholic showing the vision for tomorrow for all? And is the vision being fought simply because it is ushered in by the minority Catholics? Surely we are not that backward or dumb in Goa, are we? Looking from the outside in, I can only shake my head in shame. English is spoken by between 470 million and one billion people worldwide. In India, 125 million speak English. Most of them are second and third language speakers. English is today's global language. The battle has waged against the English language for centuries but time has always declared it the victor of the controversy. Hence the current battles being fought in Goa to stop the funding of schools where English is the medium of instruction is nothing new. In fact, the battle over languages has been simmering in India for many generations. The most celebrated of course is the Hindi-Urdu divide which spilt much blood before a resolution of sorts was arrived at. At various points in history, Hindi and Urdu were given equal recognition. To this day, there are people in India who are still not satisfied with the split that sent Urdu north to Pakistan and retained Hindi (Hindustani) in India. After all the battles, all the blood, it is ironic that English has made such inroads in India and is the second national language of Pakistan. It is almost a status symbol to speak English among families. The battle for Konkani was no less illustrious. Marathi always claimed Konkani as its dialect, resulting in both sections of Goans at war for many decades. Things became worse as the Portuguese made their language the official and social lingua franca. It was also the official language of the Catholics. Marathi was the language of the Hindus. Finally, on 4 February 1987, the Goa Legislative Assembly passed the Official Language Bill making Konkani the Official Language of Goa. After much blood and martyrs, Konkani won its day. For someone outside looking in the decision to fund English as a medium of instruction is a no brainer and to oppose it one would have to be living in the dark ages or be irrelevant in today's world. It is a simple decision that should have been made 50 years ago. So go global with English, stay local with Konkani. In June 1976, the apartheid South African government decreed that Afrikaans was to be the language of instruction in schools as opposed to English. There was a momentous uprising by students in Soweto and the police response resulted in as many as 200 children dead and many more hundreds injured. The student action came at a time when the black campaign for freedom was a lull and soon the fires of freedom were burning in every black soul, thanks to the brave students. The rest is history and it is not unfair to say that modern South Africa owes much to the child heroes of Soweto. Today, English reigns supreme in South Africa. History records other battles for supremacy of one language over another. In all these battles, there is a common thread for the winning language: the loser loses bits or parts of its culture. Overseas Goans who have replaced Konkani with English and have become one language families must feel a subconscious, or even a conscious, distancing from the old country. I mean there is a certain cultural heritage (you may say cultural cringe) in thinking in Konkani. Perhaps over time we may have thrown the cultural baby with the English bathwater because the current of the English language was overwhelming. I mean if we really care we could always learn Konkani. Let us hope that the so called Freedom Fighters do not attempt to sabotage democracy by going on a hunger strike. Comments to Cyprian Fernandes: skip...@live.com.au

Yes my grandaughter goes to an English MOI school, but yours should not 2011-06-18 Parents are aghast at the hypocrisy of the Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch leaders. It was an open secret that most of them have happily put their children and grandchildren into English medium primary schools. It was only when the fiery Adv Radharao Gracias made a public statement to the press exposing the hypocrisy of the BBSM leaders that more and more Goans are getting an idea of the real truth. Shashikala Kakodkar sent her son to an English Medium School - to a hated Christian institution like Don Bosco's no less! Her grandchildren are studying in Sharada Mandir where the donations to get one's child in allegedly go into thousands. Uday Bhembre confessed to *Herald* reporters that Radharao was right that his grandchildren go to an English medium primary school. He also said he could not interfere since he was not the parent of the children only the grandparent. I don’t decide the future of my granddaughter. It is not right for me to decide her future, Bhembre is quoted to have said. He has no qualms however of deciding the futures of lakhs of children from middle and lower income families. Kiran Naik's child must be terribly confused now. Junior Naik has been pulled out of a Konkani MOI school and put into Bhatikar's English medium school. Yes Bhatikar is also one of the leaders of BBSM and yes he runs an English medium primary school. Now after the furore, Naik has taken his child out of Bhatikar's and is enrolling the child into Popular School, Margao. http://www.targetgoa.com/newsd-Yes-my-grandaughter-goes-to-an-English-MOI-school-but-yours-should-not-2520 -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Menezes.

[Goanet] Botak Zai Tedna Omas
Botak Zai Tedna Omas The article Grandchild Studying in English : Bhembre on Herald dated 19th June'11, makes an interesting read. Advocate and one of the stalwarts of the Konkani movement in the mid eighties says that the future of his grandchild is not his prerogative since he is not the child's parent and the decision is entirely of the parents, who are his son and daughter in-law. To me this sounds like botak zai tendna omas If Advocate Uday Bhembre has no right to decide his own grandchild's MOI, which constitution on earth has given him or Shashikala the right to decide my grandchild's MOI ? Is it only Advocate Uday Bhembre and his family the recipient of the democratic norms of this country and we are not ? Advocate Uday Bhembre, has exercised his democratic right of the MOI when he educated his children in the MOI of his choice and now his own son exercised his right to the MOI of his child and it is this very same right that the parents in Goa are fighting for. So as citizens of democratic India aren't all Goans entitled to this divine right ? Senior Uday Bhembre being an advocated should know the advocacies of democracy better than any lay man or even a woman like Shashikala Kakodkar who at her age could be suffering from amnesia. I have not seen any/much written on these great men, seems to have forgotten by Goans Thanks and regards Anthony On Sun, Jun 19, 2011 at 10:50 AM, Gerard de Souza gernal...@gmail.comwrote: http://www.goenche.com/article_details.php?aid=94 http://www.goenche.com/article_details.php?aid=94 On 18th June 1946 Dr. Till June 14,

Gun shots rent air as tourists, locals clash in BagaTNN | Jun 19, 2011, 03.36am IST PANAJI: Three tourists from Haryanahttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/tourists-from-Haryana were injured in a violent altercation with local residents who retaliated after one of them fired gun shots in the air at Baga on Saturday. Anjuna PI Manjunath Desai who is holding charge of Calangute police stationhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Calangute-police-station said that five tourists holidaying in Goa, were on their way from Panaji to Baga by car. On the way, three of them stopped along the Baga bridge and began clicking photographs of some local residents without their consent. This led to an argument between the angered locals and the three tourists. Finding themselves in a tight spot, one of them telephoned his friends who were in the car at the other end of the bridge. The two rushed to help their friends and heated arguments ensued, even as the crowd increased in size. Fearing the angry crowd, who threatened to pelt stones at the tourists, one of them pulled out his revolver and fired it in the air apparently to frighten the locals, the police said. Before the locals could retaliate, the five drove away only to be chased by the locals. Even as the Haryana tourists drove fast through some narrow roads, they were ultimately caught by the locals. Fearing for their lives, the driver and the one who had fired the shots in the air, fled from the scene. The three others were attacked by the locals and their Haryana-registered car was also damaged, the police said. When the police rushed to the spot, they discovered that the three tourists had sustained injuries. They were rushed to the Goa Medical College (GMC) and hospital. The police had not registered the case till midnight. An official from the Calangute police station said it would take some time, adding that the three had been discharged from the hospital. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Gun-shots-rent-air-as-tourists-locals-clash-in-Baga/articleshow/8908340.cms -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Menezes.

We might be going off at a tangent here. It is quite normal for an activist group not to be linked to any political party or ideology, while individuals involved in the group would obviously have their own affiliations. Besides, no campaign group can claim to be apolitical (even not taking a stand is taking a stand!) But it makes a lot of sense for anyone campaigning for a cause to be party-agnostic or non-party. [Goanet] St. Anthony Feast celebrated at Siolim today 19th June 2011
The feast of St. Anthony celebrated today 19th June, 2011 at Siolim, Goa It wasn’t raining the whole day except just before the end of procession. St. Anthony of Siolim is different. He is holding a giant ‘sorop’ or serpent or cobra in his hand. Actually, it’s not a sorop but a deuchar or devil or satan in the form of a snake. It seems the Snake brought lot of fear and hardship at the time of construction of the church thus making it impossible to carry on with the construction work etc (this must be around 1567.) The workers together with the priest prayed to St Anthony and kept his statue at their workplace. The next morning the cobra was found dead around the base of the statue. It is for this reason that the statue of St Anthony only in Siolim has a serpent in his hand. See pics The Church also has the Saint's relic. - see pic Normally. St. Anthony feast is celebrated on 13th June every year, don’t know why this one on the 19th June Extra: I saw some san’nas for sale in the feast fair for the first time Guest what, I could not find my favourite Reuddio in the whole of the Feast fair or feri. [Goanet] Grandaughter goes to an English MOI school but yours should not
Gabe and Freddy in below posts which make very interesting read, have exposed the hyporcricy of BBSM leaders who organised the recent Goa bandh. Yes these hypocrites preach one thing and practice another. They would like to enjoy the benefits of education their family membersin English while deprive the others from it. Goans can easily see their game and teach these leaders and their parties by never voting for them and never allowing them to impose their views by force on them. Camilo Fernandes From: Gabe Menezes gabe.mene...@gmail.com To: Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994! Subject: [Goanet] Yes my grandaughter goes to an English MOI school, but yours should not Yes my grandaughter goes to an English MOI school, but yours should not 2011-06-18 Parents are aghast at the hypocrisy of the Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch leaders. I don?t decide the future of my granddaughter. Now after the furore, Naik has taken his child out of Bhatikar's and is enrolling the child into Popular School, Margao. http://www.targetgoa.com/newsd-Yes-my-grandaughter-goes-to-an-English-MOI-school-but-yours-should-not-2520 From: Freddy Fernandes ffernandes@emaar.ae To: goanet@lists.goanet.org Subject: [Goanet] Botak Zai Tedna Omas Botak Zai Tedna Omas The article Grandchild Studying in English : Bhembre on Herald dated 19th June'11, makes an interesting read. This is not at all surprising. Goans can expect this gun culture of Delhi, Gurgao, Haryana and the rest to be a daily affair in Goa. A year ago a similar incident took place near O'coqueiro junction when a non-goan driving his car in a rash manner scrapped a motor bike. The moment the bike rider blocked the car and begain to argue the driver took the revolver from the dash board of his car ahd threatened tho shoot. The crowd stepped back and he drove away. This will be the revolution for 2020. These fears seem unrealistic for some wise Goans on goanet and we are accused of biases. So could the concerns and warnings from some sincere non-goans who live here of such North Indian culture of violence taking hold also be biased? -Soter D

Dear Nelson, You are the MF Husain with a paint brush so effectively wielded, bold and faint. But then, you must realize that your elaborate painting will fetch a good appreciation even to the extent of being hung on the educated walls. That's it. Nada mais. It will remain there, unseen and un-acknowledged, to die a death of disregard, while the electorate moves like ants, life rolling, with elections coming and going with the regularity of the monsoon rains. PEOPLE VOTE FOR PEOPLE. And that is the fact of life. PEOPLE WILL NEVER VOTE FOR A SYSTEM. You give them the best in governance, you show them how it will work, you show them the self-sacrifice involved, you flash the benefits that this SYSTEM of governance will provide them in the short /long run, in short you exhaust your tonsils to better inform them that what you are promoting will take care of the aches and pains of mal governance and corruption that they are cursing from daybreak to sunset. Sadly, NO. It will not work, unless and until you give them the person they want to vote for. They know very well that what you have explained cannot go hand in hand with the person they want to vote to power. They will discard your excellent first class picture of good governance, even pee on it, but vote they will the person they have decided to vote for. I am talking through experience well earned. I have tried telling people to go for a SYSTEM that is written down, a SYSTEM which is sure to work if the right amount of discipline is involved, that, even if a DONKEY is fielded as the candidate who has been chosen to drive that SYSTEM home, to GO FOR IT, blindly. The response that I have received is: WHO CARES FOR THE SYSTEM.. WE WANT TO VOTE FOR THE RIGHT CANDIDATE, the CANDIDATE who will WIN. ... meaning.. 'WE DO NOT WANT TO WASTE OUR VOTE' This only translates into . the 'candidate' who will satisfy every urge of mine, before elections as much as after elections. I am wiser now. I have stopped telling people how diligent the SYSTEM must be that will govern them because, you give them the best and nothing will come of it. All that I want to do is to get my facts in order (work towards getting the facts stright and proper) as to how many voters in each and every 'booth' of a constituency will press the button on the symbol that is projected FOR CHANGE when the time comes. If the right, necessary 'average' does not gel in the preliminary estimates, it is wise to drop this electoral exercise like a hot coal and retire, to save a lot of grief and trouble. The final word is either one of these two:- 1. Your desired 'average' will be attained only with ingeniously designed all-round incentives to the voter. OR 2. Painstaking NETWORKING with people (if there are people) who desire 'good-effective-governance' for a change, much in advance of the final push-button date, remembering that one does not have to work the entire 'ROLL' to attain this magic average. http://www.thepeninsulaqatar.com/international-sport/156292-indian-arrows-are-on-target-says-bulpin.html By Armstrong Vas Doha: The launch of India’s football youth development programme and the formation of the Indian Arrows I-League team has turned out to be a ‘big step in the right direction,’ Desmond Bulpin (pictured right), the English coach of the cricket crazy country, said. “I congratulate All India Football Federation (AIFF) President (Praful Patel), Bob Houghton for initiating the brilliant idea of having a team of Under-21 players together and playing them in the I-League,” said Bulpin who is here for the London Olympic Games qualifying match against Qatar. The Indian Arrows were founded in the summer of 2010 as the AIFF XI and took over the place of disbanded Mahindra United in the I-League. “Look at my squad. It is almost ready-made. Isn’t it?” Bulpin asked. “The beauty of the squad stays that most of the boys – ten out of my registered eighteen are from Indian Arrows. It’s been served on a platter,” he added. But a lot of things need to be done on the youth development front, he said. “I am happy. They are doing their best (All India Football Federation). It will take time for the game to take shape. Infrastructure, academies, good pitches are needed all over India Leagues for younger players starting from the age of 12 onwards will do wonders. Most importantly, they all should have good coaches,” he said. Bulpin who spend most of his life coaching in England has also coached in Singapore, Uzbekistan and Philippines, says it’s a pleasure to work with the Indian boys. “Having worked in Singapore, Uzbekistan and spend most of my life in England what I find the best thing about the Asian boys and the Indian boys and especially the Indian boys is that they have a very good attitude. These boys (Indian Arrows) are very eager to learn and listen. It’s a pleasure to work with them.” “Today the society in England is not as good as yours (Qatar) or in India, where you get a lot respect. We work very hard and the result will show in the years to come,” said Bulpin. Reflecting on the performance of his team in the I-league which finished ninth after initial problems, but it was a credible finish for the youngsters as the team had no foreigners like all other clubs, Bulpin took pride in the fact that his boys defeat a 100-year-old-club Mohun Bagan in the I-league. “We are just one year old, unlike Mohun Bagan, which is over 100 years. We beat them 5-4 in the I-League.” On the availability of talent in India, Bulpin said: “Talent is aplenty here. But it has to be nurtured in the right way. Give them the good nutrition, education and most importantly, the basics of the game. If the players are provided all this and trained well, Indian football can be like cricket in the country.” The Arrows were part of the program initiated by former national coach Houghton and youth development director Colm Toal to prepare an Indian national team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Bulpin said the five-year partnership agreement recently signed with Pailan Group is a big development. “The Pailan Group will be looking after the Arrows from the new season onwards with the team’s training base being at the Pailan World School’s ground in Joka, which will provide two training pitches along with other facilities including a swimming pool, lodging and food.” The AIFF spend around Rs70m were feeling the financial burden was too high to sustain over a long-term period and the entry of the Pailan group has turned out to a big boost. Also under the AFC Club Licencing criteria the Indian Arrows need to be run as a team and not as part of the federations youth development, which forced the AIFF also to look at options on how to keep the plans for the future running. [Goanet] Qatar rally to down India Monday, 20 June 2011
http://www.thepeninsulaqatar.com/international-sport/156302-qatar-rally-to-down-india.html Qatar rally to down India Monday, 20 June 2011 By Armstrong Vas Doha: Hosts Qatar survived a few anxious moments but rallied to register a 3-1 win over a fighting India in the second round qualifying match of the 2012 London Olympics at Al Sadd Stadium here yesterday. The 2022 World Cup hosts conceded a fifth-minute goal but bounced back to score three. The action now shifts to Pune on June 23 where the two teams play the return leg. India struck early in the very fifth minute through ace striker Jeje Lalpekhlua. Qatar equalised in the 14th minute through Hamad Al Khalfan. The hosts took the lead through captain Hassan Al Haydos who struck in the 54th minute. Qatar completed the tally thorough substitute Elneel who found the net in the 69th minute. India hardly took time to settle down. The boys in blue struck through a dead-ball situation. Captain Raju Gaikwad, who has earned a reputation for long throws back home in the Indian I-League showed his utility level yet again. The Qataris had a measure of things to come from Gaikwad in the very fourth minute when his long throw created goal-mouth confusion but the hosts averted the danger. A minute later, Lalpekhlua ensured Gaikwad’s long throw-in didn’t go in vain. Lalpekhlua, who emerged as the highest goal scorer among the Indians in the I-league with 13 goals, controlled the long thrown-in and in a swift turn around essayed a snap shot which came off a defender. The Indian striker, however, was quick to latch on to the loose ball, guiding the ball past the Qatari keeper, much to the roar of the Indian supporters. Qatar recovered from the early jolt to force a spot kick in the ninth minute. UAE referee Mohamed Abdelkarim Mohamed Alzarooni pointed to the penalty spot when Abdelaziz Hatim was brought down inside the box. Qatari captain Al Haydos, who took the kick, couldn’t get past the defence of the Indian keeper Laxmikanth Kattimani. Kattimani, who plays for Dempo Sports Club in the I-league dived to his right to block Al Haydos kick. Five minutes later he couldn’t stop Al Khalfan from scoring Qatar’s first goal. The Qatari striker took full toll of the defence misunderstanding between the defenders and Kattimani. Al Khalfan who found himself free, side-stepped the advancing keeper to gently roll the ball into an unguarded goal. The Indians, who relied on the counter-attacks to break into the Qatar defence came close to scoring in the 29th minute but Lalpekhlua who was put through by Lalrindika Ralte was disposed in nick of time by the Qatari defence. The Qatari fans survived a few anxious with seven minutes to go for the final whistle as goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb held on to the ball as if he was holding to dear life. Sheeb, in the process of collecting a long throw-in from Gaikwad lost his balance and landed into the goal, but the goalkeeper ensured that the ball did not cross the goal-line while his lower part of the body crossed the goal-line. Qatar were a transformed side in the second half. A pep talk by Simondi Bernard, the French coach seemed to have an effect. Nine minutes into the second half, Qatar took the lead. Qatari captain Al Haydos who went unchallenged into the Indian area took full advantage of the situation to essay a 30-yard drive which went past a diving Kattimani. Goaded by the lead, Qatar pressed for more goals and Abdulassis Al Ansari’s long-ranger was saved by the Indian keeper. Qatar consolidated the lead through substitute Mohamed Salah Elneel. Elneel, who came in for Al Khalfan, slotted home the loose ball which Al Ansari rolled for him. Elneel placed the ball past Kattimani with no Indian defender in sight to challenge him. Thereafter, Indian goal survived two close shaves. One effort each of Al Ansari and Elneel came off the crossbar. At the other end, Qatar goalkeeper too was stretched to his limit twice, first when he plucked Jewel Raja Shaikh’s free kick from nowhere and on the second occasion he blocked an Arnab Kumar Mandal header. [Goanet] COLUMN: Parents defeated the bandh by accompanying children to school
Parents defeated the bandh by accompanying children to school By Nisser Dias nisserdias at gmail.com SMS to 9422437029 The all Goa bandh called by the Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) to coincide with the re-opening of the academic year 2011-2012 to protest the government’s decision to extend grant-in-aid to government and aided schools who adopt English as one of the medium of instruction (MOI) was defeated by the parents as they defiantly refused to boycott school. The parents unitedly took their children to schools all over the state to mark high percentage of attendance and also to convey a message to the protestors that they do not have the support of the parents. Members of BBSM, BJP, MGP, Shiv Sena and all those who actively supported the bandh might shout from roof tops that it was successful but what should be the parameters to decide its success. Should it be blocking of highways, forcibly shutting down business establishments, stoning and damaging government property, threatening motorists or should it be the attendance in schools. If the latter is taken as the sole parameter to decide the success then all those supporting the bandh have failed miserably. If the attendance in schools is taken as the parameter to decide the success of the bandh then the parents have outright rejected BBSM and embraced the decision of the government giving a choice to parents to educate their children. Furthermore businessmen and entrepreneurs have not downed shutters willingly or to show solidarity with the protestors. They have done so out of fear of hooligans and goons who have entrenched themselves in communal political parties like the BJP, MGP and Shiv Sena. For example BJP’s candidate in Margao Sharmad Raiturkar was shown on local channels threatening and coercing shop owners who defied the bandh call to close down or face the consequences. And police instead of giving protection to the businessmen looked as if they were personal body guards of Raiturkar. Another personality of the saffron party who was leading BJP vagabonds and hooligans was Rupesh Mahatme who has loads of experience in vandalism and is alleged to have been a member of the Goan team that had taken part in the demolition of Babri Masjid. Another aspect of the bandh is that, the BBSM have been successful in using force and violent means to close business establishments in the state to the extent that many of the goons barged into various banks and manhandled staff and forced them to close. However though most of the entrepreneurs and banking staff saw to it that they dropped their children to school. I expected Opposition leader Manohar Parrikar one of the most qualified person in the state to display some dignity and maturity but he himself was part of the hooligans and protestors roaming the streets to forcibly closed down establishments and paralyze the state. Infact Manohar Parrikar has no moral right to participate in the bandh as in 2009 All Goa Unaided Schools Parents Association (AGUSPA) had brought to his notice about the exploitation of parents by managements of private unaided school and also the lack of opportunity for the lower section of the society to study English. He promised a discussion but never got round to doing it for almost two years. His attitude brings a question to my mind, does education in Marathi of which he is strong believer, inculcates intolerance, violence and hooliganism. Otherwise why did Parrikar and BBSM fail to demand a special assembly session to debate the matter before resorting to bandh? Why did they not approach the High Court through writ petition before causing hardship to the general public and loss to the state. This would have an educated approach rather than using force to close down business establishment, paralyzing movement and indulging in vandalism. Ultimately, the protestors has achieved nothing by resorting to bandh on the contrary they have lost their credibility and also sympathy from the general public. Shashikala Kakodkar a staunch supporter of Marathi who was by her father’s side to merge Goa with Maharashtra has allegedly made some communal statements like the government’s decision to give a choice to the parents is an appeasement to the minority community. I simply cannot understand why the minority is being targeted, if a demand is made for Romi script, the minorities are blamed, demand for English as one of the mediums of instruction fingers are pointed at minorities. Has this protaganist of Marathi and lover of Maharashtra ever stopped to think or rather check the percentage of students from the majority community attending English medium private schools, has she the answers to the high percentage of students from majority community attending schools run by minorities who are dedicatedly imparting education to students irrespective of caste, creed and religion. It would better for

Try addressing people that way when abroad in an English speaking nation. That was precisely why it is “Indian English”. I guess the Indian culture of addressing elders with respect, has crept into the 'India English'. Among Hindus, it has always been, 'kaka/kaki', 'mauso/maushi' and many others. Among Catholics, it used to be similar. No elder was addressed by his/her or 1st name, ever. This was when Konkani was THE spoken language! When the English language started creeping up in the 60s and 70s, all the Konkani terminology started being transposed into the English that we started using. We used to greet our neighbors with a Good morning/afternoon/evening, which if we did not do, got yelled at! Even the neighbours used to point it out to you, if you did not wish them! The western world on the other hand, accepted the usage of Mr or Mrs.XYZ or even the 1st name of the elders. Whether or not the Goan/Indian society will adopt the English way, only time will tell. [Goanet] What about Freedom Fighters - late Mr. Evagrio
In those days freedom movements backed by the sly soviets and UN was a fashion. On hindsight forced decolonization has caused immense problems around the world. In the case of Goa we are in a third world abyss. In fact Goans in the right mind should now sit down and think of the useless actions of not the only three mentioned below but the rest of the lampioes called freedom fighters. S.Helekar replies: 1. For me Ramani is as much a Goan name as D'Souza or Khan or Naik. The fact that all Ramanis, D'Souzas, Khans and Naiks are not Goans is immaterial to this discussion. Comment: Mr. Helekar first assumes that Ramani is a Goan surname exclusively and accuses me of including this in my list of non-goan surnames. Now the surname even if non-goan becomes immaterial. For me it is very much relevant just as a Nayak (Naik) , Deshpande, 'Poskote or Baskote' and the rest who masquerade as Goans for merger and marathi and call us anti-national and teach us culture. S. Helekar further wrote: 2. Restating what I said earlier more directly, for the sake of reason and sanity I cannot believe without evidence that there are anti-Goan conspiracies among migrants in Goa. Comment: If you do not have evidence to believe, I have it from the horse's mouth. You understand what is 'slip of the tongue'? There are also good non-goans who will testify to this non-goan conspiracy as much as there are genuine Hindus who will testify about the secret hate campaigns of the communal forces in Goa. This imposition of cultures and languages is the reason for racial hatred against Indians in some countries. Carefully observing, the bulk of these venomous elements in Goa are from beyond the borders. Of course every family has its fair share of black sheep. As the konkani adage goes 'bhitorlo bheddi, bhailo chor'. You Mr. Helekar may prefer to pretend or live in your shell claiming that there is no danger around. Well, I do not. I have good friends from the non-goan community as much as from the Hindu community and there is no reason for me to simply suspect conspiracies. I am not a politician nor do I have political ambitions by creating a communal divide. Only time reveals the truth just like the Hazare-Ramdev-BJP-VHP--? connnections. To my understanding, *apolitical* would mean the group itself doesn't take political sides. Not that its individual members don't have political views. If you extend the argument below to its logical extreme, members too should not have their own political views. The credibility of an NGO would depend on its work and its record, not the overt or covert links of individuals who happen to be part of it, I would think. [Goanet] Gandhi teaching Gandi
TOI e-version writes: NEW DELHI: Thousands of people have gathered at Rajghat here to take part in the day-long hunger strike called by Anna Hazare to protest against police crackdown on Baba Ramdev and his supporters during their agitation against corruption. Anna Hazare will begin his day-long fast at the Rajghat at 10 am. A number of youths wearing Gandhi caps and elderly people were seen at the spot waving the tricolour amidst a heavy posse of security personnel. A man dressed like Mahatma Gandhi was the centre of attraction as he sang Gandhi's favourite bhajan 'Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram'. With Delhi Police refusing permission for the day-long hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, Hazare had decided to shift the venue to Rajghat to avoid a confrontation. Civil rights activists had contended that denial of permission to hold peaceful protest was against the basic Constitutional rights of citizens. The Hazare-led protest will be accompanied by an all-religion prayer meeting and a debate on Lokpal Bill. A senior police official said on Tuesday that they have refused permission for the fast at Jantar Mantar due to prohibitory orders at the site after the police action against Baba Ramdev in Ramlila Maidan on Sunday.

People, Avoid getting into this whole business of class, etc. Are we hurting so much that we wish to point this that and the other? Are we representing one group over another. Or aligning with notions of class/entitlement/privilege or sheer satisfaction,. As in demanding satisfaction?! Are we disposed to align with one continent against/over another too in the prerogative we hold in our minds about advantage? People of culture do not use the word culture. They truly do not need to. On top of it some of us have had a priest in the family (mine), but now it apparent that my people did not learn much. All the above applies. The priest learnt though. Social construct? Get the point? The point is that by giving an example closer to home instead of: they are, she is, he said, they did, they are this, she is that --one points to the futility and banality of the crassness we inadvertently align ourselves to thinking we are better off. And Christians to boot! On the one hand someone bleeds, on the other hand equally crass (paixt) characters get to burnish their lacklustre, smarmy credentials, And so it goes. Some watch and wait, others make sure they get to debate all sides, while assiduously assuring their children get the best culturally speaking (Enlightenment down) of the same tactless, artless and loose-character individuals they attack. And to make it clear point out that one is friends with all comers! Bonhomie within bonhomie? A mis-en-abyme! Reflected towards infinity?! The hurt and the attendant bonhomie. venantius j pinto

Re: [Goanet] There cannot be another Goan Revolution
Soterbab appears to be creating his own exclusive reality here, one that no other person who objectively reads my posts in this thread would be able to recognize. I merely pointed out that Ramani was a Goan name that was dragged into the mix. I never used the word exclusively. Here is that pertinent post of mine: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2011-June/209933.html In any case, I noticed that Soterbab was not able to state clearly a single conspiracy theory that he believes in, let alone give any evidence grounded in the reality that is not exclusive to his own eyes and ears, nor his imagination. What's more, he wants me to take him at his word and receive the wisdom that he, as a self-proclaimed non-politician, has received from the horse's mouth and the mouths of all the genuine Hindus and non-Goans he knows. Fat chance! Cheers, Santosh P.S. I also noticed that he singled out the name Naik from the three new names that I had mentioned, transformed it to Nayak, and added Deshpande to it. He left out D'Souza and Khan. --- On Sun, 6/19/11, SOTER so...@bsnl.in wrote: S.Helekar replies: 1. But Truth definitely manifests itself sooner or later. -Soter D.
[Goanet] Konkani Muslims ... from the Wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konkani_Muslims]
Konkani Muslims From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Konkani / Kokani Muslims is a Muslim sub-ethnic group of Maharashtrian Muslims living in the Konkan region of India. They speak the Konkani language. A good number of them live in Mumbai. There is a large Konkani Muslim diaspora community of economic migrants working in the Arab states of the Persian Gulf, the UK, the USA, South Africa and East Africa (where they have been established for almost a century). Muslims from the Maharashtrian districts of Raigad, Thane, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg as well as from the state of Goa are generally regarded as Konkani Muslims. The Muslims of Southern Raigad and Ratnagiri district speak a dialect of the Marathi language called Bankoti/Sangameshwari, while those from southern Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Goa speak the Konkani language. Muslim people of south Sindhudurg near Malvan and the former Maratha princely states of Sawantwadi and Oros speak a dialect of Marathi / Konkani called Málvani language. The main food of Kokni Muslims is non-vegetarian, mostly sea-food. Its staple food is rice and bread made of rice (preferred at dinners) with fish and lentils or vegetables. It is mainly influenced by Maharashtrian cuisine. A small number of Konkani Muslims are also settled in the city of Karachi in Pakistan, particularly in the Kokan Town neighbourhood. They predominantly adhere to the Shafi`i Madhab, unlike most Muslims from the subcontinent who are Hanafis[1]. [Goanet] Football Qatar V/S India
Hi Goaneters, I have watched the football match between Qatar v/s India. Both the teams have equal players but it looks that Indian Team have less players on the ground. Though this team is very strong and well organized one they do not have proper control of the ball. We must give some critics to players to improve the standard of the game. What I have seen is lack of team spirit with Indian boys. They do not cover the places but just run after the ball and get tired. Many times they do not mark the players properly. Every where they run and sometimes two at a time and keeping a gap for the opponent player to clear the ball easily. When two players going to attack the ball the opponent gets a chance to pass the ball easily to his partner who is on open ground. There the weakness arises and the goalkeeper gets pressure to save the ball. According to the strength of this team they would have won the match but they fail to impress the spectators. Surely they will be able to beat Qatar in their next home ground match in Pune. All the best Viva football Viva Goa. [Goanet] The masks begin to drop
For several years the communalists and mergerists had managed to conceal their true faces behing secular masks. They mingled within secular initiatives and made the right noises at the right places. For the last several months these masks have begun to drop one by one no sooner they discovered that their gimmicks have been exposed. It has been our persisitent accusation that the Congress is as Communal as the BJP. The likes of Uday Bhembre, Prashant Naik, Arvind Bhatikar have had a field day by taking unsuspecting people for a ride. But it is not possible for these masks to remain in place specially when one is on a public platform. The arrival of the Sagres Ship and the Medium of Instruction were the perdect occassions that helped expose this duplicity which lay concealed for several years and poisoned Goan society from beneath in the name of nationalism. It is high time that the likes of Uday Bhembre, Prashant Naik and Arvind Bhatikar must join the BJP rather than pretend to be aloof from any mischief and calling the BJP communal. The cunning Arvind Bhatikar thought that he could even trick the Archbishop of Goa into parading himself at the anti-corruption rally in Goa by citing the example of the Archbishop of Delhi. But he miserably failed. There are other dumb mergerists and communalists who continue to hold on to the mask by making statements through other mouth's and parade themselves on the pavements of Panjim as upright and unbiased. Their masks have started hanging half way. In the days to come the people of Goa will give a befitting reply to these forces. -Soter D.
Re: [Goanet] Goenchea Rakchondaracho Awaz floriano
The GRA says: GRA is not backed (even covertly) by any business lobby GRA is not backed (even covertly) by any political party. -- GRA replaced GBA because, as you'll felt, GBA was not performing its job. I still remember the group Goa Protectors which, if I am not mistaken, had MLA Victoria's son as one of its key leaders. This group proved to be bunch of toughies whose aim was to intimidate and hurt those they thought were public enemies or enemies of the leaders. Eugene

Re: [Goanet] Indian English
Dr Reis, There are many different dialects or styles of speaking English across the globe; which are you referring to? Indian English is one of the accepted variants, though obviously not as influential and powerful on the global English dining table! But that may change. India is already the second-largest English-speaking country in the world, and Nigeria is in third position! When you say That is precisely why it is 'Indian English', I trace a condescending tone in your sentence. Correct me if I'm wrong. But I see no reason to look down upon Indian English. In fact, I am one of its speakers! FN *** COMMENT: If there can be an American English, Australian English and Engrish, then I don't see why we cannot have an Indian English. Many years ago, when we were studying the works of Rabindranth Tagore, these were the words uttered by Prof. Anne Menezes of St. Xavier's College, Mapusa. Well why not? -- Tony de Sa. tonydesa at gmail dot com
