Bigamy, the Raj and the scandal buried in Sir Cliff Richard's past

 By Alison Boshoff
 UPDATED: 08:39 GMT, 1 November 2011

Sir Cliff Richard is famous for many things apart from his singing --
his almost preternatural youthfulness, his Christian faith and, of
course, his failure ever to marry.

So it was rather a surprise when, in a recent interview with BBC Radio
4's Woman's Hour, the 71-year-old bachelor boy became involved in a
 discussion about bigamy.

Sir Cliff announced -- quite out of the blue -- that his grandfather
 was a bigamist.

Serenading his mother in 1960: Sir Cliff said he had never met any of
his grandfather's other family after he revealed that his grandmother
assumed her husband was killed in the war while he set up a new home
 in Coventry

'His wife, my mother's mother, thought he was killed in the war. It
turns out that he left her and let everyone assume he was dead, and
set up a new home in Coventry.'

He added that he had never met any of this other family, only saying
 coyly: 'It's in my book.'

But careful examination of Sir Cliff's substantial 2008 tome My Life,
My Way reveals no information at all about a bigamist grandfather, or
the family he went on to have.

Instead, he fills 308 pages with a long and detailed celebration of
his professional life and good works, but little about his personal
and family life -- and certainly no bigamous skeletons.

In fact, Sir Cliff has never before acknowledged such an intriguing
element in his background -- which is probably why, as I discovered
this week, many members of his 'other' family have died with no idea
 they were related to him.

Even those still alive, and who know the truth, have never met him,
although research showed he has numerous 'half-cousins' living in
Britain, should he ever wish to find them.

Young ones: Sir Cliff's grandad William, aged 44.

Sir Cliff has never before acknowledged an intriguing element in his
background -- which is probably why many members of his 'other' family
have died with no idea they were related to him

There are some other surprises in Cliff's family tree, too. For
although he briskly told Woman's Hour that his mother was 'not
Anglo-Indian' -- as has been suggested in the past -- and that he had
instead an 'Anglo-Indian stepfather', it turns out that he does indeed
 have Anglo-Indian blood.

The connection comes through his great-great grandmother, Emeline
Josephine Rebeiro, the daughter of an Indian man from Goa, Vitriaus
 Rebeiro.

One of Cliff's long-established full cousins from his mother's side of
the family, Garth Gregory, tells me: 'My mother was Cliff's aunt. They
were sisters -- my mother Olive and his mum Dorothy. And it is well
known in the family that there was Indian blood.'

Indeed, pictures of Cliff's mother Dorothy reveal a raving beauty in
the mould of the late Anglo-Indian actress, Merle Oberon.

So what is the truth about Sir Cliff's fractured family?

He was born Harry Rodger Webb in Howrah, outside Calcutta, in 1940.

His father, Rodger Webb, was a manager for a catering company and his
mother, Dorothy Dazely, was a British woman who had been born in India
 to a military family.

They came to England in 1948, joining thousands of British descent who
left when India gained its independence. The family were 'destitute'
at first; Rodger Webb had only £5 in his pocket. Cliff and his
 sisters, Donna,

Jacqui and Joan, lived in a single room in Hertfordshire while their
 father sought work.

'Ours was the kind of hardship that either draws people more closely
together, or splits them apart completely,' Cliff said.

Cliff's Aunt Olive also emigrated from India and lived in Manchester
and then in Essex. Olive's son, Cliff's cousin Garth, tells me that he
saw the singer a few times in the early days, and remembers the star
buying him a bicycle for Christmas, but then they lost touch.

'He is the star of the family, isn't he?' says Garth. 'I don't think
my children have even met him. He's not in this country all that much
-- I don't think he's interested in his wider family.'

Perhaps he should be, though, for it's quite a family tree. The key
figure in the story is Cliff's maternal grandfather, William Edward
Dazely. He was born in 1896 in Bombay to Edward Dazely, a driver with
the 27th Battery Field Royal Artillery, and his wife, Daisy.

Anglo-Indian blood: his great-great grandmother, Emeline Josephine
Rebeiro, was the daughter of an Indian man from Goa, Vitriaus Rebeiro

William, a serviceman, married a railway guard's daughter, Dorothy, in
1919 in Madras. There were two daughters: Cliff's mother, Dorothy, and
 her younger sister, Olive.

At some point in the 1920s, William went to serve with

[Goanet] ALL IN THE PARIVAR?

2014-01-26 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The very partisan and the politically manipulated functioning of the Goa
Public Service Commission (GPSC) is there for all to see. To get his way in
selecting his choiced persons to all government posts the Chief Minister
Mr. Manohar Parrikar high-handedly appointed his relative Kurupati
Dwarkanath Row to the very high constitutional post as the Chairman of GPSC.

Kurupati Dwarkanath Row’s wife was a Dharwadkar. Her brother Girish is the
co-brother (saddu) of Chief Minister’s brother Avdhoot Parrikar. Avdhoot
Parrikar’s wife and Girish Dharwadkar’s wife are sisters of the Caro
family. Their third sister is married to Dr Vinay Prabhu Desai, whose
daughter is married to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s younger son
Abhijaat Parrikar.
Over the years the GPSC had been declaring on their website the names of
the candidates selected for various posts. But from January this year they
only display the seat number of the person selected. Why could this have
been done? It is apparent that this has been done to avoid the public from
viewing how tainted the entire selection process has become. And this way,
the selection gets shrouded in utter secrecy, until of course, the
appointments are made!

On 11th October 2013 the GPSC advertised for 18 posts of Junior Scale
officers for the Goa Civil Service. A total of 3542 candidates applied for
the post while 2830 candidates actually appeared for the written exam.

Strangely the candidates were instructed to write the name and roll no. in
the answer sheets. It was noticed that when the name and roll number was
written on the first page, the same appeared on the second page as the
backside of the first page was coated with a thin carbon film. Was this to
reveal the identity of the candidates? At all competitive exams it is only
the candidate’s seat or roll number and never the candidate’s name that is
written in the answer sheets. This is completely illegal and untenable and
calls for annulment of the entire selection process.

This written examination was conducted in 4 parts. The part A consisted of
25 objective questions of 2 marks each. Part B consisted of 2 essay type
questions of 25 marks each and 10 objective questions carrying 2.5mark
each. Part C also consisted of 2 essay type questions of 25 marks each and
10 objective questions carrying 2.5 marks each. Part D was on English
comprehension.

Earlier there used to be an objective paper of 90 marks where in there were
90 questions of one mark each. 1/4 mark was deducted for every wrong
answer. There was no negative marking this time and the 20 objective
questions asked in Part B and part C were too simple and not of the
expected level for the post of Junior Scale Officer. The questions asked
were, who is the Speaker of the Goa legislative Assembly, when is Shigmo
festival celebrated in Goa, when did RTI act come into force, etc).

The syllabus was not fully covered and there were no questions asked on
Goa’s freedom struggle, elections, general science, and only a single
question was asked on history of India. In Part D on English comprehension,
the two passages given for comprehension were too easy and not to the level
that was expected for the post of a Junior Scale Officer. This limited
questioning was apparently on basis of questions and answers provided to
the pre-selected candidates, who otherwise, would have failed, if there was
an honest test.

The examination was conducted on 15th December last year and the GPSC
hurriedly declared the results in just over a month leaving doubts as to
how the 2830 papers were corrected so quickly. The results were declared
last week on 20th January and the candidates have been instructed to apply
for the verification of marks within 10 days. Surprisingly the candidates
shortlisted have already received call letters for the oral interview which
has been scheduled on 4th February.

If the Government is serious in eradicating corruption and claims it is
different from the previous corrupt regimes, then it is time Mr. Manohar
Parrikar waves his magic wand and sets the process right by ensuring that
only the deserving are selected and not the hand-picked ones, who, in any
case, will not be able to run the State administration effectively.

Mr. Chief Minister, it is time to rise above personal agendas for the good
of Goa and dust of the rust, which is bringing bad repute to this
Government which had promised a Parivartan by way of good governance.

Re: [Goanet] Feedback needed from Goan Medical doctors

2014-01-26 Thread Santosh Helekar
Here is the article to which Stephen was referring:

http://www.epaperoheraldo.in/epaperpdf/2212014/2212014-md-hr-17.pdf

Crystal healing is just another example of many forms of quackery that are
practiced in the world today. Quackery is almost as big a business today as
modern medicine. Indeed, it is to the practice of modern medicine (when
ethically conducted) what black market and fraud are to legitimate business.
The trouble however is that a fraudster or an unethical medical doctor can be
prosecuted under well-defined laws. But this is not the case with quacks who
peddle nonsense like crystal healing. They are not only free to fool and fleece
the public, but as in the present case, they get free publicity through the
popular media, the members of which are more often than not scientifically
illiterate, or worse, anti-science in their ideological stance.

There is a stereotypic modus operandi followed by all quacks, which is easy to
recognize. They prey upon the gullibility of the lay public, especially those
who are desperately looking for any respite from sickness and pain. They say
that they are performing miracles, believing that they are privileged
individuals who are blessed with the rare heavenly gift of healing. After
merely attending some New Age workshop or reading a Self-Help book they claim
that literally overnight they have become great healers. They dispense
selectively remembered anecdotes that feed their confirmation bias while
conveniently forgetting those that crap on it. Without retaining any
understanding of basic high school physics, chemistry and biology, nor the
slightest clue about the difficult concepts of modern science they use
scientific sounding terms such as energy, vibrations, frequency, resonance,
electromagnetic waves, electric charge, cells, etc. One surefire weapon in
their arsenal is an appeal to religious feelings and to the popular misguided
reverence towards ancient wisdom. Prescientific faith-based or superstitious
beliefs, such as karma, chakra, chi, soul, spirit, and so on, figure
prominently in their self-promotional shtick. Having absolutely no idea of what
it entails, they tell others that they have conducted extensive research into
whatever quack remedy that they are peddling at any given moment. They also
pose as universal experts on all types of quack remedies.

If you read the Herald interview in question you will detect all the above
signs of a quack’s sales pitch. The truth is crystals and stones have no
physical effect on the human body. The use of scientific terms such as
frequencies, vibrations, etc. is totally nonsensical in the context of disease
and treatment. As far as science is concerned, whether it is basic physics and
biology, or medicine, itself,  the verbiage in the answers to the reporter’s
questions may as well have been muttered by an inebriated person in a drunken
stupor. No scientific theory or experiment supports any of the assertions made
in the interview. It is really unfortunate that newspapers deceive their
readers in this manner.

Here is a nice article by a science writer in a recent issue of Skeptical
Inquirer exposing the absurdity of crystal “healing”:

http://www.csicop.org/specialarticles/show/diamonds_a_doctors_best_friend/

Here is a quote that sums it all up:

QUOTE
But instead of having the answer to all our maladies stuck in stone beneath our
feet, crystals, while something to look at and study, have no biological or
physical mechanisms through which they could affect human health. Perhaps a
glittering diamond would make you happy, and therefore alleviate stress or give
you calm, but it certainly does not tap into a yet undiscovered “human
frequency” like someone searching for a radio station. Nothing about the
natural world suggests that a certain arrangement of a mineral’s atoms will do
anything for the human body other than please the eye. Can we reduce crystal
healing to the absurd?

I have nowhere stated that the US did not lure intellects

Getting hold of someone and taking him somewhere, is
different.

You lure a fish to a bait. Once it bites the bait, you get

Stephen Dias steve.dias60 at

under caption: Quackery on Herald.:

Thank You Dr. Santosh.

Neuroscientist,

Thank You for your valuable
comments.

RESPONSE:

Stephen and members of this Forum.

I would like to clarify that Helekar's
mail to Stephen is no better than any of our Goan politician’s explanation to
the
public in respect to any incident. I hope Stephen learns to be more observant
and questioning to such replies.

Mr. Helekar volunteers to give a
feedback on “crystal healing” even though Dr. Joe D’Souza sought the reaction
and feedback from Medical Practitioners and Physicians in Goa, of which Mr.
Helekar is neither.

In his volunteered reaction Mr.
Helekar writes about quackery, modus operandi of quacks, blackmarketeers,
gullible public, healers, various physical nomenclature, superstitious beliefs,
and also cites a so called science writer’s article ( which I assume is Mr’
Helekar’s “credible” website as he has said before here:
http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2013-December/236812.html).

But NOWHERE does he prove that
crystal therapy if False.

Nor has he explained WHAT IS this crystal therapy.

And as he has stated in the post
cited above, the feedback according to him is an “accurate information from
reliable
sources in his possession.”

I am sure Mr. Helekar will retort as
he usually does, that the FDA has not approved crystals for therapeutic use, OR
that there is no peer reviewed scientific research journal published to
substantiate this claim of crystal healing. Therefore it is quackery!

In the same stride, I am sure Mr. Helekar will have to affirm that
acupuncture is also Quackery?!

Is there any peer review scientific research
proving it is not effective? Does modern science even know how acupuncture
works? Does modern medicine know what is
“Qi, yin, yang and meridians”?

Read Scientific view on TCM theory

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acupuncture#Scientific_view_on_TCM_theory

Quote: Qi, yin, yang and
meridians have no counterpart in modern studies of chemistry, biology, physics,
or human
physiology and to date scientists have been unable to find evidence that
supports their existence. Unquote.

But everyone
knows that Acupuncture works for several chronic pain conditions and short term
regional anaesthesia.

Read here why
Clinicians as well as NHS recommend acupuncture:

http://www.theguardian.com/science/2013/jul/26/acupuncture-sceptics-proof-effective-nhs

Dr. Joe D’Souza did not request the
feedback specifically from medical practitioners and Physicians for nothing. It
is because only clinicians have a broader outlook towards therapies as they
cannot afford to be dogmatic and wear blinders, and also because they are in
touch with patients.
