 A narrowly framed conception of
 'development' is being used by
 the Goan government in
 collusion with corporates to
push the people of Goa off
 their land.

 dna Research Archives

Goa is constantly framed as the holiday capital of India.
However, there is a good amount of violence that underwrites
this project of providing fun. The recent incidents in
Tiracol, a village in the northern-most tip of the state,
 highlight this clearly.

Sometime around the midnight of 14 May, residents
of the village were awakened by the arrival of men
and machinery hired by M/s Leading Hotels Pvt.
Ltd., a five-star hotel company, who went on to
bulldoze a large part of the orchard lands of the
village as part of their plan to build a PGA
standard golf course and resort. The villagers
have been strongly opposing this project for the
last several years, with the result that the
project has now been virtually stayed by the
courts. Leading Hotels’ response to this legal and
popular opposition was to sneak their men and
machinery in at the dead of night, protected by
   50-odd bouncers.

Work was halted only when the vigilant villagers alerted the
police. However, when local reporters reached the scene, the
bouncers were still there. Diana Fernandes, a journalist
writing for O Heraldo (16 May, 2015), reported that the area
was still swarming with 20-odd musclemen the next day.

This instance of violent land grab is not confined to the
village of Tiracol. In fact, as a result of the boom in
mining, real estate and tourism industries in Goa, it has
become a trend over the last couple of decades.

In most cases, the chief victims are agricultural tenants who
tilled the land belonging to landlords, and mundkars living
on this land, with various obligations towards its upkeep.

The problem of land-grab in Goa needs to be
understood through the existing feudal land
relations in Goa -- the relation between the
   mundkars and agricultural tenants (henceforth
tenants), and the bhatkar (landlord) -- have been
supplemented by the feudal-like powers of global
capital that work in alliance with the feudal
lords. Additionally, we also suggest that the
existing sorry state of affairs that Goa finds
itself in, due to excesses of 'development' in the
real estate market and other industries that gobble
huge chunks of land, can only be correctly
understood and effectively addressed, if one
approaches the issue from the perspective of the
   tenants and their experiences.

In Goa, land was traditionally appropriated and tightly
controlled by the bhatkars. In addition to being a class,
these bhatkars were also upper-caste. The caste equation is
important as the bhatkars could be of any religious
background, but were invariably from the upper-castes.

Relief to the mundkars and tenants came in the form of the
Goa Agricultural Tenancy Act, 1964 and the Goa Mundkar Act,
1975, but this relief was eventually thwarted by a new and
developing economic system that no longer made it
economically viable to cultivate land and made it seem more
alluring to sell land to the highest bidder and share the
spoils, albeit disproportionately between the bhatkar and the
 tenants.

But Tiracol was different. The bhatkarial rights
were held by the Khalap family, said to be a branch
of the Deshprabhu family who still are the bhatkars
of most of Pernem taluka. The bhatkar here was an
absentee one who had long broken contact with the
village, to the extent of not collecting either
mundkarial services or tenant revenues. This,
coupled with the relative homogeneity of the tenant
population -- a small village of about 50 Catholic
households living off cashew orchards, fishing and
the production of urrack and feni, along with some
rice farming and coconut plantations -- made the
village a relatively egalitarian and developing
   space where caste hierarchy

[Goanet] Get involved

2011-04-30 Thread Chris Fernandes
The Editornbsp;nbsp;The Konkani teatr (play)
entitlednbsp;“PUBLIC”nbsp;nbsp;directed by Comedian Augustine, giving a
strong social message, nbsp;nbsp;evoked a good response not only
fromnbsp;nbsp;Mandrem residents but also from Anjuncars which was shown on 24
April in their respective villages.nbsp;nbsp;PUBLIC portrayed both the
lackadaisical attitude of administration, politicians and the lethargy shown by
the aam admi when it comes to confront the government machinery even to
obtainnbsp;nbsp;a simple resident certificate from the Panchayat, which
ofcourse is everybody’s right. Without greasing palms (packet/envelope), no
work is done.nbsp;nbsp; However, Augustine has conveyed a strong social
message in his vociferous and vehement avatar that if the aam admi has his/her
way, many things can be achieved without greasing palms
too.nbsp;nbsp;Initially, he indicatednbsp;nbsp;how Goans are endeavouring
to migrate using Portuguese passport route rather than
tackle our own domestic problems.nbsp;nbsp; This migration vacuum encourages
‘migration’ from neighbouring states and then we blame them for all the woes
and sorrows that accompany them.nbsp;nbsp;Apparently, he has drawn
inspiration from Swami Vivekanand and Anna Hazare to showcase this aggressive
social activism and to encourage the public at large “to get involved” before
it is too late.nbsp;nbsp;I guess one can draw its own conclusion after
watching this play.nbsp;nbsp; Moreover, Anna Hazare who was a driver in the
army has become a driving force and a beacon of light to all of us to imitate
him and achieve what he started, thus benefitting the Society at
large.nbsp;nbsp;Swami Ramdev’s initiative, Bharat Swabhiman has also started
a similar initiative by mobilising aam admi all over India, including Goa to
contain corruption, bring back the black money stored in Swiss and other
parking havens, etc etcnbsp;nbsp; Finally, Augustine took a commitment from
all Mandrem viewers to get involved in social activism in an endeavour to help
our own neighbours in the hour of need and simultaneously to stem the rot in
the Panchayat, police and the politicians.nbsp;nbsp; Are there any takers

Dear Sirs
All I want for thisnbsp;New Yearnbsp;is
I, amongst the aam admi, need my daily bread (roji) regularly during this
tourist season which is obviously missing or conveniently forgotten by virtue
of Government’s new tourism policies.nbsp; Whilst the Goa Tourism Minister and
his entourage are overseas fishing for new opportunities (read tourists), it is
disheartening to observe a very lean tourist season this year upto the time of
writing, which is conspicuous from the absence of overseas tourists which till
last year were there in large numbers.nbsp; nbsp; This Govt. Policy of
allegedly showing discrimination with tourists of various nationalities wherein
some nations are favoured with 6 months tourist visa whilst the USSR visitors
amp; others (who wish to stay for 5 months and more) are given only 2 months
visanbsp; or less to a minimum of 21 days, thus not only affecting the 5-star
hotels and restaurants but also small hoteliers, restaurants, shacks, vegetable
vendors, fish vendors, kirana shops, bakers, taxis,
construction business, etc. etc.. trickling down to aam admi.nbsp; Needless
to say, this domino effect has affected other allied businesses as well.nbsp;
I may be wrong in coming down hard on the powers that be but is there any
solution to this dismal scenario?nbsp; Yes, very much if some sense can
prevail in the Tourism Ministry which need to intervene on a war footing and
help the aam admi smile once again.

Fish workers oppose draft CRZ notification
http://www.thehindu.com/2010/09/18/stories/2010091863840300.htm
Special Correspondent

Say it does not protect fishing communities or environment

Thiruvananthapuram: The National Fishworkers Forum (NFF) and the
Kerala Swathanthra Matsya Thozhilali Federation (KSMTF) have come out
against the draft CRZ Notification 2010 put up on the web site of the
Ministry of Environment and Forests.
A press note quoting Matanhy Saldanha, chairperson, NFF, and T. Peter,
president, KSMTF, said there were only cosmetic differences between
the pre-draft and the draft notification. =93It appears that either the
Minister for Environment and Forests is trying to hoodwink the people
or the bureaucrats in that department are misleading the Minister and
the public while acting as puppets of the various lobbies and vested
interests.=94
The note said the amount spent on organising 10 consultations across
the country to understand the views and opinions of the coastal
communities had gone waste as none of the recommendations were
reflected in the notification.
Mr. Peter said fishing communities and other traditional occupants of
the coastline had strongly demanded provisions to protect their right
to live along the coastline that they had been occupying for centuries
and their right to livelihood from what the coastal environment
provided. =93Sadly, these demands have been ignored. The notification
neither protects the fishing communities nor the coastal environment.
Activities that do not need to be within 500 metres from the sea such
as atomic plants, greenfield airports, industries, special economic
zones and large housing projects have been permitted without any clear
rationale. There is also no attempt to take account of the cumulative
impacts of thermal power plants and ports along the coast.=94
The note said there was no case for the special status sought to be
given to Kerala, Goa and Mumbai. =93Given that the situation along
India's vast coastline and its biodiversity differs so vastly, this
only opens up the possibility of each State asking for, and being
given, a special status. This will only serve to dilute the CRZ
notification and open up the coast to builders, the tourist lobby,
land sharks and the industry, while offering no protection to the
environment and the traditional inhabitants of the coast.=94
It said the NFF would do everything in its power to ensure that the
draft notification in its current form was withdrawn. The KSMTF is
organising an open discussion on the notification at the Press Club
here on Monday.

BHO campaigning in Clinton, IA, Sept. 12, 2007 said --

Fast forward to April 7, 2009, addressing American troops in Iraq:

Under enormous strain and under enormous sacrifice, through controversy and
difficulty and politics, you have kept your eyes focused on just doing your
job. And because of that, every mission that has been assigned -- from
getting rid of Saddam, to reducing violence, to stabilizing the country, to
facilitating elections -- you have given Iraq the opportunity to stand on

for that you have the thanks of the American people.

Have not been reading the messages on Goanet as assiduously as I should
because of a busy schedule, but some misrepresentations have been brought to
my attention. In particular that I made odious or unsubstantiated
statements. Upon a review of Goanet archives I find the following:

I had criticized Tariq Siddiqi for being an apologist for Sadam Hussain.
Here is one statement of mine which is relevant:

I stand by my statements. Obviously there are others like you who do not
agree with the president's actions. The remarks were for their benefit not
meant exclusively for you although I could have expressed myself better.

Secondly, an allegation has been made recently by Marlon that I extended an
apology to Tariq. This is untrue. No apology was extended because none was
due.. Here is what I had actually said (CAPS MINE):

I did in fact write at some length to you. It probably got lost in
transmission. Shall try to retrieve it. HOWEVER THERE WAS NO APOLOGY THERE
-- just the rationale for my action.

I have taken the time to refute these false allegations because
misrepresentations if repeated often enough are transformed into fact. For
any one interested in the truth, you are invited to visit the archives. I
have no intention to engage in a prolonged debate on this issue because the
exchange between me and Tariq and some others is there for all who value
truth to see.

Very well put, Selma -- a deserving paean to this country, the U.S. of A.
Your eloquence is admirable as usual -- even though I may not agree with you
on everything. Obama has yet to explain what he means by change. By the
time he is done with raiding our wallets I am afraid all that will remain is
small change!

This Fourth of November was a historic day for America and the world because
when America sneezes, the rest of the world catches cold! Just look at
world markets today! Only in America could a person of recent immigrant
vintage and color rise to this exalted position. Illustrates the country's
diversity and acceptance. That is why we see those interminable lines at
the U.S. consulate in Breach Candy, Bombay and all over the world --
supplicants for opportunity and freedom! This country seems to have finally
cast off its shackles and laid to rest the ghosts of past racism!

But we cannot, and must not shut our eyes and ears to the absence of this
person's background--we don't know who he is-- lack of experience and
competence--and his associations with people of dubious background. He has
served four years as a senator in the Illinois legislature before running
for the U.S. Senate and is currently in his fourth year there. During all
of these years, he has no record of accomplishment, period. Unless his four
NAY votes in Illinois against four bills to ban infanticide of babies born
alive due to botched abortions is counted an achievement! During his
current term in the U.S. Senate, out of four years, two of them have been
campaigning for the office of president. Most of his time in the Illinois
and U.S. Senates he has voted present to avoid taking a stand on issues!
John McCain was ahead in the polls in September till the financial meltdown
hit us. The Democrats in collusion with the MSM (mainstream media)
succeeded in putting the blame on the Republicans. In a previous email I
have explained at length how this was accomplished.

I'm not pessimistic about the U.S or its capitalistic system. I am
pessimistic whether our next president and his savants in Congress are
capable of dealing with the massive economic issues we face which will be
exacerbated with the additional trillion dollars he will add to the
spending without explaining where he will get it from.
The markets are beginning to reflect this. Yesterday the day after Obama's
victory celebration, the Dow Jones Index dropped almost 500 points -- a
first ever the day after an election. Today, as I write this at 12:30 p.m.
it shows a further drop of 360 points!

Congress and Barack Hussain Obama must explain to Americans that the cost of
corporate taxes is ultimately borne by workers and consumers, not companies.
They need to explain that high corporate rates stifle job growth. We need a
corporate tax rate significantly lower than the current 35% which is the
second highest in the developed world. Obama is straining at the leash to
raise it further! A sane government must teach people how to fish--not give
them fish as such action creates and encourages dependency. He has promised
everything to everybody--there was a woman on television sobbing
uncontrollably because she is under the impression Obama would pay her rent
and give her a no-skin-in-the-game mortgage (otherwise known as a down
payment) now that he is president-elect.

Attempts are being made by a cabal on this forum in the form of a steady
drumbeat to muzzle the conservative point of view by intolerant and hateful
rethoric. We must guard against any such attempts against an open and
honest discussion with regard to the consequence of this election.
Politicians invariably promise more than they can deliver to get elected.
Clinton did this by promising tax cuts upon his election, but gave Americans
the largest tax increase ever! Mr. Obama has already begun backtracking on
his promises--in his victory speech this is what he said: The road will be
long and difficult. It might take years... His supporters were promised
what appeared to be an instant utopia. Based on his record (or lack of it),
this Messiah (so confirmed by none other than Rev. Louis Farrakhan, also
known as Calypso Louie in a previous incarnation) might just prove to be a
false prophet

Chris

As a Goan, whose future family generations will be American, I can't help
but be proud at this moment, not just for Americans but for humanity at
large. This is the America we all ultimately fall in love with.

This is the America that renews itself continually and fills us with hope.
Hope, that we can overcome the ugly disease of prejudice, bigotry and
division based on creed, caste, class and colour. Hope, that the swell

I must commend this astute poster for filling in details I inadvertently
missed. Gosh, I didn't know Obama was Muslim--and doesn't he claim he was
born in Hawaii not the Arab country, Kenya? And an anti-American Marxist,
to boot! Probably influenced by his mentor in Hawaii during his formative
years Frank Marshall Davis, the Marxist. But I must digress on the last
point -- that Arabs are indecent. My experience is Arabs are not only
decent, but they are incurably modest-- they even cover themselves from head
to toe in dishdashas so as not to inflame the passions of the pubescent
virgins in Arabia. In fact Arabs are so full of peace (except when they
fly planes into American icons) that they let Americans do the heavy lifting
to drive the Al Qaeda out of Iraq and are now scrambling for digs to house
 their embassies there.

Let's see--

We could use the services of professional journalists--our own having been
found sleeping at the wheel to question things like--

A guy named Joe , who happens to be a plumber with ambitions for a bigger
business, questioned Barack, who happens to be running for the office of
Presiden of the U.S/Leader of the free world.

And within 24 hours Media has given us more information about Joe's life
than they've given us Barack's life in the past 18 months.

No thanks to a diligent press corps, we now know more about Joe's
professional licensing status, his income tax situation, his employment
history, his domestic squabbles, his voting record, everything associated
with his personal identity; his education... It's probably reported
somewhere he wears boxers or shorts.

Thanks to our busy press corps...we still don't know what grades Obama made
in college; how he got into Harvard; when he met Bill the bomber Ayers;
when he stopped doing illegal drugs; his medical history; whether he still
smokes cigarettes; the extent of his affiliation with socialist/communist
organizations; why he's no longer a licensed attorney; whether he lied on
his Bar application...

Whether he'd qualify for a security clearance if he were just an average
Joe, what passport he used to travel to Pakistan in 1981; who his
ex-girlfriends are; whether he was or still an Indonesian citizsen; why his
Kenyan grandmother insists he was born there; whether he was ever legally
named Barry Sotero or anything else besides Barack Hussein Obama

Why he needed the help of a crook to purchase his family home; where he was
on Nov. 6 and 7, 1999; what the long-version of his birth certificate says;
why he helped an anti-American, pro-Islamic candidate for Kenyan President
against U.S. interests; why he listened to Rev. Jeremiah Wright's sermons
for 20 years;and yet managed to know nothing even tho DVDs of those sermons
were being sold in the Church for fundraising; how many times he took his
kids to a Rev. Wright sermon; what he actually did as chair of the Annenberg
Challenge; the depth of his relationship with ACORN...

Well, you get the idea...

But, really, we all must be so relieved that the Mainstream Media has done
its job vetting Joe The Plumber, who is NOT running for public office, but
who had the AUDACITY to challenge Barack Hussein Obama, who wants mjy vote
for the office of President of the United States of America!

conclusion that the grand old elephant would collapse with its own weight.
Its a good feeling to know that my horse ... errr ... the donkey is in top
form - sleek, agile and ofcourse packed with a high powered delivery system.

Chris comments: If Jim had taken the trouble to do a little
research -- and be less judgmental -- he would have discovered that George
Bush had inherited an economy in recession.. Through the introduction of
the two tax cuts the economy recovered and the country prospered through his
presidency, with the exception of the current year. Annual GDP was in
excess of 3%, which is considered excellent for a country like the US, with
a developed economy. Unemployment was at 5%, the lowest in decades. Interest
rates were also low. I have a sneaking suspicion that Mario will have more
to say on this subject, in his inimitable fashion, but let us lay the blame
for the current malaise where it rightfully belongs -- on the Democrats, who
brought on the current fiscal mess. It will take a little explanation, but
here in brief, is the timeline:

In 1977, Jimmy Carter, pressed by grassroots organizations, signed the
Community Reinvestment Act to boost home ownership in poorer communities, by
making home loans affordableregardless of the borrowers' ability to repay
the loans..

In the 1990s community organiser Barack Obama worked closely with ACORN
activists, employing intimidation tactics of radical activist Saul Alinsky.
These activists crowded bank offices, blocked drive-up teller lanes and
demonstrated at the homes of bankers to browbeat them into lending to poor
and minority communities. Those banks who resisted were accused of racism
In fact, BO was co-plaintiff with Acorn in a discrimination lawsuit against
Citibank. Rep Jim Leach warned about the impending damage that nonregulated
GSEs (Govt Service Enterprises) posed. He worried that Freddie Mac and
Fannie Mae would be transforming these agencies into money machines for the
stockholding few. Rep Barney Frank, the then and current chairman of the
Financial Services Committee, countered that the agencies served a public
purpose..

In 1994 Bill Clinton exacerbated the situation, addressing the housing issue
thus: I am committed to an unprecedented partnership between industry and
community leaders and government to recommit our nation to the idea of home
ownership and to create more homeowners than ever before. .

In 1995 Republicans won control of Congress and planned reform of the CRA.
The Clinton admin aligned with Barney Frank, Ted Kennedy and Maxine Waters
(D-Cal) and did an end around and directed then HUD Secy to inject GSEs into
the subprime market. Cuomo said GSE presence in the subprime market could
be of significant benefit to lower income families, minorities and families
living in underserved areas. In 1998, by falsifying signatures on Fannie
Mae transactions, $200 million was transferred to later periods, triggering
$27 million in bonuses to top FAnnie Mae executives. Treasury Secy Larry
Summers issued this warning: Debates about systemic risk should also
include GSEs, which are large, and growing rapidly... Disregarding
warnings, and under pressure from the Clinton admin, Fannie Mae eased credit
requirements on loans it would purchase from lenders, making it easier for
lending to borrowers unqualified for conventional loans. NINJA (No Income,
Job verification or Assets) loans became the rule rather than the exception.

In 2000 the Senate Banking Committee noted that as a result of the CRA, $9.5
billion in expenses had been given to ACORN and other organizations. (It
must be noted here that Barack Obama was an ACORN lactivist trainer, their
lawyer, and the second largest recipient of Fannie Mae's largesse)..
Several individuals and organizations, including the WSJ, Competitive
Enterprise Institute, Treas.Secy John Snow, Repub senators Chuck Hagel,
Eliz. Dole, John Sunnunu and John McCain, as also Rep Richard Baker (R-La)
all warned that financial trouble of large GSEs could cause strong
repercussions in financial markets, affectng federaly insured entities and
economic activity. Sens Sunnunu, Dole, Hagel and Mel Martinez introduced
legislation to improve GSE oversight. They got nowhere.

In 2004, Rep. Maxine Waters said We do not have a crisis at Freddie Mac and
particularly at Fannie Mae, under the outstading leadership of Franklin
Raines (who went home with a $90m million bonus along with other top
executives with similar outrageous bonuses and salaries). Barney Frank
told Treasury Sec. Snow: I do not think we are facing any kind of crisis
Click on the link below:

Finally in 2007-08, the housing bubble began to burst, bad mortages began to
default, and the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac portfolios were revealed

cleaning, cooking, etc.

Dear Paulo,
I agree with you that there is a certain stigma attached to these jobs in
Goa but consider it from their point of view. Many of these men are
educated atleast upto 12th standard. I know quite a few who have done
their Bcom and are now working onboard ships as cooks. I even know someone
who did his Hotel management and is thinking of going onboard the ship.
Those who are not going onboard the ship will make their way to the UK and
join the packing crews in Swindon.

The problem is this, when they come out of school, Goa 50 years after
liberation has not been able to produce any substantive job opportunities
for them. If our politicians had any vision, we would atleast by now have
a list of the definitive industries we want to target. Alas all our
energies are frittered away playing political games while the business of
the people remains undone. Whatever development has taken place in Goa is
largely by the sheer diligence of our people and despite our governments,
not because of them.

And Chris, boy I wish I oould have saved $13,000 a year in the US. Guess,
hubby was just in the wrong job :-)

I am glad if Daman and Diu loks as good as is claimed by the Tourism Dept.

to observe the blackish sand which was unusal because we were conditioned to
accept white beaches only--but the black sand looked good just as black
pearls look good! As we got closer and began to walk on the sand--big
surprise! We had to watch very carefully where we stepped because it
seemed to be all over. Finally, it became really unbearable--there was so
much of it, we had to beat a hasty retreat. Are those fellows (and felines)
we see in JoaGoaUKs beach videos and photographs Damanese migrants doing

It is not just Goans but most Indians do it also. The reason they do this is
even with minimum wage, they live miserably and put away most of their
earnings. Gas stations are usually a good opportunity for employment. If
they work 10 hours at even $5/hr., that is $50.00/day or $350/wk or
$1400/mth. approx. Food is mainly daal bath (or $2 or $3/day) or
$60/mth--chicken is very cheap--as low as 60 cents/lb. or less. They live
in crowded conditions mostly in slums for $150/200/mth. Food and shelter is
$260 and approx. $40 misc. expenses for a total of $300/mth.They are
left with approx. $1100 to put away -- or $13,200/yr. If they work even
just four years, they sock away $52,800. - a princely sum for a Goan/Indian
when they go back home and sport Ray-Bans in their shirt pockets...

That's why they do it.

2008-07-06 Thread Chris Vaz

For the record, conservative estimates put the total amount of recoverable
oil in the U.S. in conventional deposits at about 39 billion barrels.
Offshore there is another 89 billion or thereabouts. In ANWR, 10 billion
barrels.

In oil shale deposits, there is more than 1 trillion barrels of oil. --
about four times the total reserves of Saudi Arabia! And if estimates of
shale reserves as high as 2 trillion barrels are true, that would be a
300-year supply of oil just from shale.

In addition, according to the American Petroleum Institute, Federal lands
hold 651 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, enough to fuel 60 million
households for 160 years. It is pure politics by the irresponsible Democrat
Party to please their environmental wacko lobby that these resources remain
untapped and the country remains vulnerable to pariah petrostates like
Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Iran and others who wish the U.S. ill (17 of
the 9/11 suicide bombers were Saudi). But there is currently strong
pressure from the U.S. public to proceed with drilling in previously
unexploited areas.

As far as the remark that America will become poorer and therefore have
less to squander on invading the rest of the world -- a reminder. It was
the liberation of Europe by the United States that all of Europe doesn't
speak German as their universal language. And fifty million Iraqis and

Samir--

The only way is for Goans to determine their own future. We should shy away
from the Indian Govt. who contributes little but is sucking up our land
through its proxies, the dilliwallahs and the ghantis who foul it. We
deserve autonomy and should make our voice heard in international
fora--including the U.N. who had once condemned Indian aggression.

To build upon Rajan's expose of what is going on, we need an operation such
as the one I described yesterday--hire professionals, conservationists,
city/town planners--and especially aggressive lawyers to initiate lawsuits
against the corrupt politicians and the developers when they have been
caught with their hand in the cookie jar. There seems no other way
because the politicians are corrupt and the citizenry, sadly, is sussegado.
I am confident we can raise the money for this enterprise if we can find a
leader who can gird for war!

Chris

PS -- Tourism can be a good moneymaker but we have to go after the upper-end
clientele--not the mostly riff raff that comes via discounted charters. But
before we can even begin to think of quality tourism, we should find a
solution to rid our beaches and cities of those bhaile who defecate and
otherwise defile all environs. We cannot attract the better tourist if Goa
gives the appearance of a taxi ride from the Santa Cruz airport into Bombay
city--if you know what I mean!

Chris, the way Bangalore is moving, all these things that you see now will
vanish in a few years. I guess the whole shit will move to Goa, if we
dont do anything about it.

The problem is that Goans are still susegad.

Tell me --- are we an intellectually superior race that we can afford to
be susegad while others whom we call 'ghantis' slog it out all day?

Unless we work very very hard, we will be relegated to be degenerate and
our only hope will be being pimps and prostitutes.

Today, the world is competitive. There is no free lunch.

And I will tell you one thing --- there is hardly any respect in this
world for places which are predominately tourist --- look at Thailand,
Bahamas etc. One needs to be good at more intellectual professionals
because they are the future of the world.

Arwin--

As Rajan has described elsewhere there is lots of work to be done to carry
out investigations into the criminal activities already discovered (and to
be discovered). It will take professional staff to include investigators.
Once discoveries have been made, it will be necessary for the lawyers to
file these cases in court. As you rightly state, all buildings put up
through bribery and illegally must be demolished. A first step would be to
put together professional help. There are Goans in the U.S., Canada, the
Middle East and elsewhere who have expressed a genuine desire in
contributing very generously towards the establishment of such a group. It
is obvious that Rajan has only been able to scratch the surface through his
valiant efforts--and I dare say that he has put the whole issue of
corruption on the front burner for which we all owe him a debt of gratitude.
We need people on the ground to take Rajan's work to the next level--to file
suits in the courts where chicanery is involved or
suspected--relentlessly--so that the builders and the politicians are put on
notice that the people won't put up with such nonsense. The morchas and
protests do have their utility, but are soon forgotten--and the politicians
are aware of that. If a group such as this can be organized, I am
personally prepared to extend help and so are some of my colleagues in the
diaspora. It is unfortunate that due to personal circumstances we cannot be
physically in Goa--but we could be with Goans in Goa in spirit--and with the
essential wherewithal to ensure we move forward.

Any comments would be appreciated

(a) SELMA 1: I woke up this morning to read that Britain would be hit
by gale-winds of upto 60 miles per hour. Looking through the windows
onto the garden that forms part of the gated-community I live in, all
seemed blissfully calm.

(b) CORNEL: Hi Selma First, pray what gated community do you live in?
And paradise? The mind boggles! I was able to drive right to your
door-step without a gate in sight! (JC please note).

(c) PS Re your expressed disappointment elsewhere about Dickens and
his several affairs, were there not a number of women who colluded in
the man's romantic and sexual desires?

(d) SELMA 2: I'm sorry you didn't think my residence to be a gated
community... It could also just be that you missed the wrought-iron
gates around it, the 24/7 security guard, the security cameras, the
concierge, the 24 hour maintenance team, the manicured lawns, the
under-ground parking space, the enclosed gardens, the gym and the
terrace garden.

(e) I didn't say it was a paradise, I said it was my corner of
paradise.

(f) Lastly, why you had to publicise a private visit to my house is
beyond me. Surely, you could have made your point about Gated
communities without making it personal.

(g)I think it shows incredibly poor form on your part to have paid me
a visit, been my guest for lunch and then let rip on Goanet. I take
it, I didn't impress you with my lunch either then?

My plan was to catch up on my work-matters until about early Sept, and

But, this one floored me.

Here is my two cents worth.

1: Unless Cornel's PhD is on the subject of 'Gated Communities', I
will unreservedly accept Selma's description of her residence as a
home within a gated community.

2: I believe that Selma knows more about her own home than Cornel does.

3: I have previously provided examples of Cornel's (by now) infamous
Misrepresentations. This probably adds to those.

4: It is not up to me to suggest to those who serially Misrepresent,
that they should (please) apologise.

5: I will NOT comment on (c) and (f) + (g) supra. I had goose bumps
when I read those points.

As usual, Selma, you have preferred to pick up the half-empty glass. You
picked one sentence to engage in distorting my message. It would appear
that you would prefer to turn a blind eye to the concretization, mostly
engaged by the bhaille as Rajan documented yesterday once again--and
sarcastically tried to denigrate the unity I have advocated. However
without realizing what you have said you just made my point -- regardless of
our political leanings (mine and George's) we are prepared to work in unison
towards a common objective: the preservation of Goa from the exploiters who
promised us freedom and are now engaged with obvious connivance of our
ghaunti politicians to sell Goa to the highest bidder regardless of the
consequences.

Goa could indeed use investment and labor -- wise investment, not predatory
exploitation of scarce resources by nouveau riche Indians. Contrary to what
you say, the camera did indeed capture the magnificence of our land and
also the blight being created today without any regard to aesthetics. Goa
could also do without the cheap tourists flying in by the boatload at
bargain basement discounts contributing little to the economy but bringing
in a culture of drugs and unfettered sex. I say leave Goa to the Goans --
we have survived and shall overcome our existing problems in our own time
and fashion. First we need to unite and go about throwing the rascals out
of office--those who care two hoots about the land and are prepared to sell
their mother for a few pieces of silver

Goa has about as much chance of surviving without the bhaile, be it in

talk about Goans being overwhelmed by bhaile is utter nonsense. Goans

It may be beautiful language to you, I find it disgusting. You can also

Mervyn,

I quoted Osho not because I consider him as my spiritual Guru but
simply to illustrate that words that may sound vulgar in one context
may not really be vulgar when used in a different context. Nothing
more and nothing less!

Let me now take the extreme position and come on your side. I'll now
grant it to you that his post may be crude and vulgar, but even then
the fuss over it is needless. The story of Buddha's response to the
angry young man who tried to insult him by spitting venom and abuse at
his face comes to my mind. The Buddha simply asked the man if people
ever visited him in his home. Surprised at the change of topic, the
man answered yes. The Buddha then asked if his visitors ever brought
gifts. When the man replied yes again, the Buddha asked what would
happen if he refused to accept the gifts? Who would the gifts belong
to then? The man said that, of course, they would still belong to
those who brought them. The Buddha then calmly said, In the same way,
since I do not accept your insults, they remain with you.

Rajan's post, however crude and vulgar it may have been, should have
been ignored likewise. He probably used that kind of language to get
on someone's nerves and by being upset; you all gave him what he
actually wanted. If you would have ignored him, he would have ended up
looking like a fool himself. On a related note, I overheard two kids
fighting on the street the other day, probably over a similar silly
thing. One kid kept on abusing while the other stayed cool and calm,
absolutely unaffected by the barrage of insults. After some time, the
unaffected kid simply replied: I'm made of rubber; you're made of
glue, and everything you say bounces off me and sticks to you.

Maybe this little kid can teach us important lessons in life. Let's
simply ignore all the insults that are hurled our way and they will no
longer be ours. They will simply stick to haunt those who choose to
throw them. However good Rajan may be as Pravin has repeatedly tried
to illustrate, it is equally true that some of his thoughts are not
compatible in a vibrant progressive democracy. Let's choose wise ways
to respond to him. We will ignore the obscene vulgar stuff!

Cheers

I guess you have heard of fraudsters n more fraudsters, etc.

My son, Marshall received an attractive online job offer in Canada from
Brad and Harley Recruitment Services (http://www.bradandharley.com),
Vancouver, Canada for the post of assistant admin in a company whose
name has not been mentioned @ $45,000 p.a.. Initially, BH sent M an
intimation informing him that they have acquired his profile thru
TIMESJOBS.COM,
where he had registered. After formally registering with BH (no fee
demanded),
M gave some more info which they desired.

Thereafter, they asked for verification of documents which need to be
authenticated or rather validated via another domain site (
www.quickValidate.com,)
which apparently belongs to BH. Here, for validation they demanded GBP15
for each document/certificate and my social avataar came to the fore as to
their
demand of GBP (Pounds Sterling) while the job is offered at Canada.
Moreover, the certificates are normally validated or rather verified by
the Consulates of the respective countries. Vancouver (the place of the
recruiting agency) I am told, is the home town of many of the refugees from
Punjab when the Khalistan issue arose.

On contacting my neighbour who is in Canada working for a Bank in
Risk Management section, he informed me after making discreet enquiries,
that BH are fraudsters and testimonies are written about them on
http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=16163,
which is self-explanatory.

BH also claims to be a premium agency for the past 3 years
and that they have served 500,000 employees! Too good to be true!
Apparently, BH has been registered in end May 2008 that too for a year.
More info on the fraudwatchers website mentioned above.

Thought of sharing the above scenario with you before it becomes
embarrassing to many n sundry who may fall victim(s) to this scam.
Hv a nice day.

The Rape of Goa, a photo documentary, by Rajan Parrikar is filled

Let us not throw the baby out with the bath water.
The rape of Goa does a great job of showing the rape
of Goa. It does not give solutions however. Let us not expect
everything in one documentary.

It certainly provokes; makes one angry; that is needed absolutely.

However, the next step is to channel the anger in the right directions.
That is our job. Let us work on it, rather than just turning this anger
into a mob mentality.

One of the big problems in Goa is lack of jobs, lack of sourcees of
earning

a living. We need a positive vision for Goa, apart from our stand of
of no construction, no mining.

To have a positive vision is a tough job. It is easy to destroy,
tougher to build. But then, it is also possible.

Today, the world is moving fast in various directions. Businesses world
over are booming, one reason real estate in Goa is in huge demand for
vacationers.

Can we train the Goan youth to be entreprenuial ?

Can Rajan also bring his high-tech education to a positive use to Goans?

This is what is needed, apart from protests and shouts.

Today, we see Goa govt. spending money like water in areas they know
nothing about. Yesterday, I read a news item wherein the Education
corporation head was talking about computer based teaching. He was
saying things like computers can be used to teach a
child about mountain formations. He is just setting the right tone
to spend another Rs. 200 crores (with appropriate amount of cuts
therein which the ministers will get) for an utterly useless venture.
The recent announcement of spendings on CCTV cameras, or school towns
outside the city, you name it, all come from ignorant bufoons who just
want cuts.

None of the above is going to help in creating a single job in Goa
or help Goans in any way.

We need to fight all this, and give an alternate vision for Goa,
based on opinions of experts in the field. That is the need of the hour,
apart from stopping the rape of Goa in the field of construction, and
mining.

Samir

Cornel--

It's always a pleasure reading you even though we may disagree re some
points of view and ofttimes a pain in the you know where ;--)s

I was born in Goa--and even though I left at a very young age, I still have
very fond memories of my quaint village of Divar with that beautiful church
atop the hill with commanding views of Old Goa with its soaring cathedrals,
Ribandar, Chorao, and even distant Panjim. My mother and I, in our Sunday
best befitting a visit to our capital city, would walk down from our home
through the picturesque village scenery to take the gazollin (the
precocius boat) on the opposite side of Chorao to chug to our beautiful
city of Panjim to shop. We would include a visit to the fine boutiques of
Menezes Cia and Cosme Mathias Menezes even though we could afford little
of the precious offerings--but we knew the personnel in those establishments
(the owernship was from Divar/Malar) and my mother would indulge in personal
banter and pleasantries.Panjim then was a beautiful, clean and vibrant
city, where everyone was properly dressed and some men would even wear a
suit and tie in the oppressive summer heat! Even though not everybody was
rich, most affected an air of elegance, the men were deferential to the
women and respectful to all others--the merchants treated you like some
distant relations, and the mellifluous sounds of Portuguese wafted in the
air mixed with Konkanni. The scenery was breathtaking and once we got off
in Panjim, there was Betim across the Mandovi in all its splendor. The
statue of Fr. Abbe Faria with the woman prone and hypnotized was a profound
mystery... For our young impressive minds, the visit to Panjim was the
ultimate experience in all its meaning before circumstances propelled most
of us inexorably to the deliverance of Bombay and the joys of Jer Mahal and
its environs. It is sad, but perhaps it is truly said that Goa is now
called a toilet and bears little comparison to the laid-back Goa I used to
know and remember. Hopefully Goans, regardless of their religion or
political affiliation will sit up and take notice and try to to stop the
savage assault and salvage what is left of it and restore it before it turns
out into another Indian urban slum. On one of my visits eight years ago, I
encountered a young white American female at the Majorda Beach Hotel
enjoying adult libations and during the course of our conversation she
discovered I lived in New York (NJ really), she exclaimed: We come here all
the way from there to enjoy paradise here and what are you doing there in
that concrete jungle? She made me feel guilty! Perhaps that was
prescient--now watching the Dona Paula skyline and what is being revealed
most of all over our Sorrowing Land through the fine lens of a camera.
The chickens are coming home to roost(?) But I digress.

So, to me Goa will always be a special place full of sounds and smells and
scenery that are vested. I have travelled many countries in distant and
beautiful places but my heart will always yearn for those pleasureable
memories of my youth which comfort and provided solace (now a stab of pain)
because that was and remains a love story which is forever part of me and
will refuse to die. As the saying goes You can try to take Goa from me
but you can't take the Goan out of me or something like that. Goa will
always remain back home to me as it should mean to all of us despite our
acceptance of alien nationalities. After all, we do owe allegiance to our
new hosts for their generosity in accepting us. I hope you feel
likewise

I must have missed the Naresh message. Madhav's response to Naresh displays
astonishing knowledge of the U.S. music scene from the thirties to the
contemporary era. You have to be especially gifted to absorb all that
knowledge and information and be able to spit it out in such a facile
manner. I am surprised I never heard of him till now.

So too about Adrian. To being India's best and having not known of him is
inexplicable. I called my friend Gerry Coutinho in New Jersey (he was on
the Indian music scene considerably having played at the Taj and now lives
in NJ) and he tells me that Adrian is a drummer (?). I haven't been to
India since 2004 and I try to avoid Bombay because of the foul air which
makes me sick. BTW Louiz Banks played May 9th at The Town Hall, Manhattan
at Miles from India concert. You might have been there. Vijay Iyer opened
the concert with Rudresh Mahanthappa the alto saxophonist. Yes, in
deference to Madhav, I must admit the black musicians were on fire --
Wallace Roney on trumpet. Lenny White (Miles Davis' drummer), (Gino Banks
also on drums was a very distant second to Lenny) and Ron Carter on acoustic
bass.

Do try to keep me in the know of happenings back home as when they come to
your attention.

2008-06-03 Thread Chris Vaz

Hi, Tony--

$450.00 divided by 300 attendees comes to a contribution of $1.50 each.
That wouldn't even fetch a cup of Starbucks latte which costs in excess of
$4.00.

Not exactly big spenders, us New Jersey-ites, eh?

Now if we had figured $100.00 x 300 attendees, that would have netted a more
meaningful $30,000! (or something like 15 lakh rupees?) That would REALLY
have helped ASRO!

On a more serious note, I trust you have completely recovered from your
recent heart emergency and back to your usual effervescent self!

GOA of New Jersey gives to GOA's ASRO HIV Aids victims

A 50/50 charity raffle held during the Spring Fling dance organized
by the Goan Association of of New Jersey (GOANJ) last Saturday
raised some $450 towards the ASRO Home for children with HIV/ Aids
in Tivim, GOA.

The project - one of two in Goa run by Caritas-Goa - houses about
20 children. Due to the growing number of children , plans are
underway to build another structure which will offer additional space
for shelter and recreation. The GOANJ has contributed $500 towards
this Building Fund. The other Home is in Cavelossim.

The dance at the Parish Center of Our Lady of Peace Church in North
Brunswick was attended by more than 300 people - an alltime record
for a summer dance and surpassing last year's attendees of 270
people. More than 30 people were on the waiting list.

The dance featured New Jersey's first goan band- The PRISM led by
Brian Barreto (of Bonaventure fame from BombaY) , who doubled as
a Deejay.

The Spring Fling dance was revived last year after more than a six
year lapse. They were discontinued due to poor attendance.

I have always said that Delhi must stop using Goa as its holiday spot and
impose its friends (industrialists etc) on Goa to its detriment.

I have always said that Goa's CM must command respect in Delhi. However
this is not possible because our own Goans have shown to Delhi that they
do not possess back-bones, that all they are good at doing is CHAMCHAGIRI
and act as DALLALs to Delhi's High and mighty. This is true of the
Congress, the BJP, not forgetting the NCP, the less talked about, the
better.

That those who consider themselves as Goa's Freedom Fighters are nothing
but the brainless and the gutless 'mules' put to work by Delhi. That if
they have any self-respect left after having fattened themselves on the
largese of pensions since 1961, they must reliase that they have failed
Goa and Goans not just once but a thousand times.

Arwin is very right. Enough should necessarily be Enough under the normal
circumstances. But it is a pity that Goans are far from getting to realise
the actual meaning of ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. We Goans will write about it,
talk of it, worry about it but when it comes a knocking at our doors, we
will fail to recognise it. A pity, really.

The refusal to denotify the 3 SEZs in Goa is the final test that Delhi has
put Goans to. If we succumb to it, everything will be lost forever.
Goans will be like scared dogs with their tails between their legs, the
roar in their throats having been snatched away forever. If we ever did
have an ounce of self-respect, we shall commandeer both, the SELF-RESPECT
and the ROAR in our throats, NOW and show these Delhi TOUTS who they are
dealing with.

We must not lose this opportunity to sink whatever differences we have
with one another. We must come out from our cosy bedrooms and our shameful
pulpits from where we have been writing and dishing out philosophies to
no end, cross the road and see what is happening there. In short, Goa
needs a breath of fresh air from this ever polluted political environment
which has been nothing but 'you cratch my back and I shall scratch yours,
double time'. We must learn to treat all deputationists in Goa as the
agents of Delhi to subvert and maim Goa and Goans with the help of our
elected voiceless chamchas, all, without exceptions.

The revolution is around the corner. We must get the guillotines out from
their dusty corners, and keep them ready to be put to work. If we fail to
do that NOW, it will be our gullible and good for nothing throats which
will be caught in the treacheous and looting fists from Delhi supported
and helped to press harder by our very own 'Judas' the mine owners, the
real estate barons and institutions that should be institutions of concern
for its people over the long run.

So Goans Hark Ye ! Arwin Mesquita has sounded the clarion call . Enough is
Enough. Put your best foot forward and march to free Goa and Goans. Do not
stop until the job is well done. And once you have done it, please do not
go back to sleep to lose all that which you have gained but remain
vigilant always so that you protect what you have fought for to leave it
intact for posterity to enjoy.

http://www.google.co.in/search?q=Madhav+Chariie=utf-8oe=utf-8aq=trls=com.ubuntu:en-US:officialclient=firefox-a

(Madhav Chari is a jazz pianist currently living in Chennai, India)

  Speaking piano

He could have been an excellent mathematician or an excellent musician.
Madhav Chari chose to be the latter. C.K. MEENA meets the jazz genius who
considers the piano the greatest instrument on earth

  PHOTO: SAMPATH KUMAR G.P.

FOREVER EVOLVING Madhav Chari: `Unlike the self-contained universe of
Carnatic music, jazz regenerates itself, pulls in energies from other sources'.

When Madhav Chari talks of motifs, idea, theme and vocabulary, of developing
a concept, editing the first draft and creating a new ending, you could swear
he's talking about writing an article. But he is in fact describing how he
composes a jazz piece on his piano.

Writing, mathematics and music were his interests while growing up. Although
math won out over literature early on, music won out over math in the end — and
a spectacular conquest it was, for he shelved his Ph.D. program for a musical
career.

  Drama as metaphor

But literature does come in handy when he explains what jazz is all about.
Chari used drama as a metaphor during the workshop he held as a prelude to his
concert recently at St John's Auditorium, presented by Worldspace radio's jazz
channel Riff. The structure of a play is set in stone, he pointed out. The acts
and scenes, once scripted, cannot be changed. The actors must stick to their
given roles, costumes and dialogues. Now imagine that the plot varies and the
order of the scenes changes from day to day. Imagine that an actor is not given
his dialogue; he has to make up his lines as he goes along, and he could be
suddenly ordered to speak in iambic pentameter. This is what a jazz musician
does every time he performs.

Music has always played a major role in the script of Madhav Chari's life.
His Tamil Brahmin father was into western music and not Carnatic, which was not
unusual considering that he had studied in Ooty's Lawrence public school, was a
resident of Kolkata who spoke only functional Tamil, and was influenced by the
Brahmo Samaj. Kolkata in the Seventies was heaven for the western music fan.
Chari says: My parents took me to two concerts every month: one classical, one
jazz. The USIS at that time would regularly bring down jazz bands that were
A-listed in New York, and Kolkata was one of the hit points along with Mumbai
and Delhi. He heard Chico Freeman, and Clark Terry and his orchestra, live. He
listened to Pam Crane, Kolkata's celebrated jazz singer. In the late
Seventies, Louis Banks played a two-and-a-half hour public concert in our
house.

Chari was entranced by the piano. Not the violin or the trumpet. The piano
was talking to me. He played it by ear when he was just five at the house of a
family friend, and considers it the greatest instrument on the planet. Kolkata,
which he calls a very rich city, intellectually, also gave him the gift of
intellectual curiosity. He read widely and was by his own account a
precocious lad who would end up talking to his parent's friends more than to
his peers.

When he was 15, he says, he got Coltrane, understood the emotional content
of his music. He was hooked. Jazz affected the core of his being. My body
would react in a different way, as though I had hit a motherlode of
electricity. When in '85 he got a full scholarship to the under-graduate
program in mathematics at Dartmouth, U.S.A., he was glad to be in a country
that would keep his musical interests alive. He was part of the college jazz
ensemble and later played

Cornel--

If your statistics are to be believed that only 5% of the population is
Brahmin and of those 5% many would NOT be casteists (how many?), then it
appears to be a very marginal minority that could safely be ignored.
Assimilation, through intermarriage and cognitive consonance will take care
of that in the not too distant future. If I were you, I would not unduly
worry about this MINOR problem, and not spend sleepless nights about an
insignificant problem.

Hi Chris
I'll be brief: I have never said that most or all
Goans are casteist. Indeed, in one of my posts, I had
indicated that an estimate of about 5% of the
population were deemed to be Brahmin let alone the
Chardos, and of these, many would NOT be casteist.

My quarrel is with the continuity of caste adherence,
half a milenium after Catholicism was introduced in
Goa. I am sure you are not alluding that this was
inevitable, nor that, the Church's connivance and
support for caste was not a big factor in the
continuity of caste hypocrisy among Catholic Goans.

I lived for almost six years in Goa initially and
then spent two six month periods in Goa in young
adulthood. In this period, I saw exactly what Brahmin
hegemony meant to poorer people including their
manifest fear of any interpreted transgressions by the
Bamon landlords. A beating from the Bamon's 'hoods'
was not a rare occurrence and I witnessed some of this
myself. Indeed, I often debated with myself, who were
worse---the big Bamon landlords or the Portuguese in
keeping ordinary Goans subdued. It is a real pity that
this aspect was not part of your learning experience!

I believe that Frederick's view is closer to mine,
Antonio's and Mario's than yours and it is a pity that
several people on my side of the fence are rather
fearful to express themselves except privately. Some
are also 'opiately' reverential of the Church although
very angry with it over the caste issue and also the
segregationist tendencies of the caste adherents.
There are 'defrocked' priests too who were forced by
the Church to avoid criticism of casteism. Indeed, I
have a massive file of the entire correspondence
between one Goan priest and the Church hierarchy that
was determined to shut him up. Some day, I hope to
make this public.
Regards
Cornel

PS As a kid of five and later too I recall in Goa the
strong feelings expressed against the caste based
confrarias of groups of 'activists' at my family home.
Perhaps I got the true flavour of resistance to caste
from this. If caste adherence is one side of the coin
in Goa, resistance to it is the other side inevitably!

Mario--

I made a good faith attempt to explain the caste proclivities in Goa. I
believe in due time these differences will dissipate. In any event, if
Cornel's statistics are anywhere near accurate (5% of the pop. being
rahmin -- of which even less are casteists), then the problem we have is
very minor and doesn't deserve a jingoistic approach.

If you insist on an immediate solution to the 'problem' I would strongly
advocate you (with Cornel for moral fortitude) borrow Anthony D'Silvas
megaphone and wield it at Friday's Mapusa market, collecting signatures for
presentation to Digu-bab (??) and see how much good that will do!

Good luck ;--))

abusive of the opinions or views of others. There is also an aspect of

2007-10-21 Thread Chris Vaz
Republican Bobby Jindal has been elected the Louisiana governor after
beating 11 rivals to be the first politician of South Asian (Indian) origin
and the country's youngest to become the governor of an American

state.

The Oxford-educated dashing politician will be America's youngest governor
when he takes charge in January 2008. No one has won a governor primary
outright until now in Louisiana.

My mom and dad came to this country in pursuit of the American dream, a
visibly pleased Jindal told his cheering supporters. And guess what
happened. They found the dream to be alive and well right here in
Louisiana.

Let's give our homeland.a fresh start, he added, with his wife Supriya
Jolly by his side, carrying the youngeest of three children. The American
dream is alive and kicking!

The victoruy is significant because Louisiana is not home to a large
Indian-American population unlike some other major swtates. And yet Jindal
won, banking on his reputation as one who fixed up the state's healthcare
system and as a fighter against corruption.

The victory also led to celebrations in his parents' ancestral village in
faraway Punjab where Gulshan Jindal,m a cousin, said We are really proud
that Bobby has won the governor'ws race. He has made us all happy and
proud.

Dear Sabhaites and Friends,

as the Cardinal and we cannot express in words our excitement to hear this
great news.

When Archbishop Oswald Gracias was appointed to head the Archdiocese of
Bombay, he had remarked that it is an opportunity to serve God, the
Christian Community and the Country in every possible way to build a just
and humane society of brotherhood. When he was ordained a Bishop, he had
taken the motto “ to reconcile all in Christ” which has been the
hallmark of his leadership to the Catholic Church in India.

A Doctorate in Canon Law and Diploma in Jurisprudence from the Gregorian
University in Rome, his vast administrative and analytical skills will be
of much and greater use to focus on strengthening the human bonds of
relationships across communities and religions. A Cardinal with a warm

Miguel--

It might interest you to know that the State of Minnesota is spending $1
billion to build a stadium for the Vikings (?) -- a sports team. The State
had a $125 Billion Budget for the fiscal year. The bridge problem was known
to the Minnesota Department of Transportation for 13 years. There are
inspection reports for the years 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2006
pinpointing the deteriorating condition of the hinges and bolts. The State
found the money to build the Stadium--but repairs to the bridge? They could
wait--with the inevitable result.

I agree with you that this should not be a Democrat/Republican issue. But
it is important to make note that these are Democrat-run States just like
Louisiana (and Kathrina) where money is thrown with gay abandon at social
problems to buy votes from the minorities and the labor unions. The inept
Democrat mayor of New Orleans and the equally inept Democrat Governor
Napolitano (who nefariously beat the Indian candidate Boby Jindal for the
job) had two days of warnings and 500 buses to evacuate the people from low
lying areas. These were not used. When the damage was done, finger
pointing began and the pointing was directed at the White House! Insofar as
the visit by the president is concerned, you are damned if you do and damned
if you don't. He would have been called callous if he did not visit. When
the bridge came down the Democrat leaders in the House and Senate
immediately blamed Bush as the cause because money is spent in Iraq--bear in
mind, the president had congressional authority to go to war. This is how
dirty politics is played even in this great country!

Before one jumps to conclusions, it might be helpful tobear in mind
that the U.S. is not a nanny state like some of our European
counterparts. Bridge maintenance is not a federal problem--it is a local
issue. The tax cut enacted by the current administration brought forth a
gusher in tax revenues. I am told the State of Minnesota, like most other
states, had a budget surplus in the area of $2 billion. They did not spend
it where it was needed the most.
A liberal state such as Minnesota is primarily concerned with issues such
as income redistribution. When a catastrophe occurs they like to point to
the Iraq war as the cause to divert attention. It would be pertinent to
point out that that most of the states mentioned below as being structurally
deficient with their bridges, are run by Democrats...

 Miguel,
The good folks of the US are spending their tax
dollars spreading democracy in the Middle East. This
is done at the cost of doing the repairs of the
 infrastructure in the US.

The US federal govt declared the Minneapolis bridge to
be structurally deficient two years ago. However,
there was no money to repair the bridge as, so far,
600 BILLION dollars have been spent on M.E. democracy.

When a bridge collapse in the US, its not an accident.
Its predicable. Govt inspectors have already flagged
the bridge unsafe. The levees collapse in New Orleans
 is another example.

As of December, 2006, 153,871 of the 596,808 bridges
in the United States were structurally deficient of
 functionally obsolete .

 State: Percentage deficient/Obsolete
 Washington, D.C. 63%
 Rhode Island 56%
 Massachusetts 52%
 -snip-
 Minnesota 12%

 Administration

And yes, there is a way you can benefit from this
state of affairs. If you subscribe to Goanet Finance,
I will post a list of companies that are certain to
win contracts when the US Govt finds the money to
repair its infrastructure. It will, unfortunately,
take the collapse on another bridge before the action
 starts.

Bringing back a bottle or two every couple of years doesn't quite cut it,

2007-01-24 Thread Chris Vaz

I am surprised that this vitriol laced tirade made it into Goanet!

When one starts by carelessly throwing about unsubstantiated calumnies
calling others crackpots, liars, idiots, fools, etc. it is evident that
there is no substantive discourse-- so descend in the gutter by namecalling!

It should be pointed out that people the world over are envious of the
success that America is--and that is why the whole world would like to come
to its shores and hope to be a part of it. Those who can't make it are
obviously disappointed and look around for excuses to denigrate its leaders!

We are the #1 industrialized nation in the world with a very successful
economy, low unemployment, high wages, a booming stock market, high home
ownership, etc. This has been the success of the current administration
following upon the initiatives of Ronald Reagan even though Bush took over
after the Clinton recession.

For the record, let it be pointed out that the Hillary-Bill
(two-for-the-price-of-one) presidency was marked by moral depravity and
debauchery. Hillary and Bill were the principal targets of the Whitewater
investigation -- and Hillary managed to escape indictment by hiring a
platoon of expensive lawyers, faking memory loss, and hiding documents from
the investigators. But fourteen of her cronies, including a former Governor
of Arkansas were indicted. Bill Clinton was the first ever elected
president of the U.S. to be impeached! Besides his dalliances with Monica,
he is known to have sold his office for campaign funds (the Lincoln bedroom,
flights on Air Force One, Oval Office coffees, et., etc.). Yes, almost
forgot, pardons to drug dealers and charlatans like Marc Rich!

America is still the land of the free and the brave. We have attempted to
liberate 50 million in Afghanistan and Iraq while a lot of other nations are
content to sit on the sidelines and criticize.

Therefore when they have governments led by crackpots and liars such
as Bush, the country's reputation suffers no end. In fact Bush is only
the latest in a long line of idiot American presidents who have undone
the country's reputation that the American people have for so long and
painstakingly built. Somehow when presented with a choice, American
voters have on several occasions voted for a fool instead of a
president. I can only hope that in the next term, America will be led
by a Hilary Clinton or a Barack Obama.

[Goanet] Does Francis Newton Souza qualify as a 'Great Goan?'

2006-12-03 Thread Chris Vaz
According to news reports, the works of Indian artists now dominating the
market have little in common with traditional sculptures or illustrations
mostly associated with South Asian art.

One top seller is Francis Newton Souza, a painter born in Goa who died in
2002. Francis' paintings often feature bold portraits with abstract,
distorted elements, appear to be highly influenced by Picasso. His
painting.Man and Woman recently sold for $1.4 million at Christie's. It
was bought by Rajiv Chaudhri, a New York hedgefund manager. (He also bought
another painting Mahiasura by Tyeb Mehta for $1.6 million). Julie Walsh
of the Walsh Gallery in Chicago which specializes in contemporary Asian art
says the buying environment for new Indian art is even more frenzied in
India. If I hop on a plane and go to Delhi and Mumbai and visit the studios
of an artist I'm interested in, not only is every single thing sold, but the
freshly stretched canvases with one mark of paint on them are already sold
as well, she says. Other Indian artists selling at top prices are V.S.
Gaitonde ($1.5 Untitled), Syed Haider Raza ($744,000 Tarangh), Maqbool
Fida Husain ($576,000 Sita Hanuman), Ram Kumar ($452,800 Untitled), and
Atul Dodiya ($216,000 Mirage).

On another note, Shilpa Ray a bluesy howler who grew up in a strict New
Jersey household where Western music was forbidden, continues making waves
on the New York music scene. Her group Beat the Devil recently played at
Knitting Factory in Manhattan, includes a drummer and bassist and herself on
harmonium (!) the lead instrument. She claims I cant sing in any of the
female keys (!) -- I have the range of an Indian man...whatever that means!
Yet that background has everything to do with her artistic identity, and not
only because she was forced to play harmonium and sing from the age of
eight. My parents raised me to be incredibly humble and stupidly modest -
I still hate them for that, because anytime someone criticizes my work, I
lie awake at night wondering why. Would Mick Jagger do that? Shilpa who
is slim and slight doesn't appear to be someone who would front a band. Yet
any such reservations disappear when she steps on stage and lets loose with
her primal howl-and-rasp on lines that can be interlaced with @#$%!During a
recent set, she informed the crowd that the show was tanking, then demanded
alcohol. When someone from the audience handed her a drink, she thanked him
sweetly before adding, It better be whiskey, axe! The music (if it
can be called that) is a brutal blend of Jazz Age melody and bohemian folk,
darkened with low end grit and seems to fit the contemporary groove if one
has a penchant to endure the intolerable

Here are some statistics for famous athletes:

Mike Tyson 5'11 - 235#
Lennox Lewis 6' 5245#
Michael Moore 6' 2225#
Oliver McCall 6' 2231#
George Foreman 6' 4240#

Of course these are athletes who work out considerably and include aerobics
in their regimen. But it is sound advice to control one's weight.

Re: [Goanet] Bleeding labour dry/to Cornel (3).

2006-11-25 Thread Chris Vaz
Crnel-

I think it is morally wrong for the government or a socialist/progressive
welfare state to take my hard earned money and hand it over to the indolent
unless the person has a physical handicap or is unable to take care of
himself. Social engineering and income redistribution has never worked
anywhere in the world and won't because it does not nurture individual
enterprise which is the lynchpin that has made America so successful. In a
freemarket society we do not need the government to step in and tell
investors how to invest their money.
Investors take risk with their capital and have the inherent right to pay
the going wage because we cannot depend on politicians to determine a fair
wage since poiticians do not create wealth--they only tax and spend to
satisfy their constituencies-- the more money they raise through taxes the
more they can buy votes and perpetuate themselves in office. Nobody
believes someone can survive on a minimum wage either. A minimum wage is a
supply and demand proposition and will find its own level. There is a
defacto minimum wage already in place since we have very low unemployment
and there is a shortage of people. As an example, WalMart pays over $9/hr.
at the entry level which is considerably over the suggested minimum wage of
$7.25/hr. What is the rationale for a minimum legislated wage of $7.25?
Why not raise it to $14.50 or $21.75 or more? Worker protection is a
large reason why European economies are largely stagnant and why injudicious
labor contracts ensuring guaranteed high wage jobs for low skilled jobs have
landed the Big3 automakers into impending bankuptcy and have exported
American jobs.

Re: [Goanet] FRIDAY BALCAO:Protection of Women from Domestic Violence in Goa.

2006-11-23 Thread Chris Vaz
Dear Roland Martins:

I am happy your Friday Balcao will be discussing women's protection issues
as there is a need to air this important subject. I do, however, recall a
recent email (from Joe of GoaUK?) wherein he had highlighted some real-life
instances where men were severly maligned/castrated. In view of the
seriousness of the issue of male persecution by predatory females, I trust
you will also raise this important issue in your forthcoming discussions.
There is a need to be fair and balanced!

Regards
Chris

Dominic--

I have been out of India for some time and Robin Vaz used to occasionally
come across the meanderings of my past. I now learn from you that he is
gone. Very sad! I met him just once at a picnic in Versova, Bombay. He
left an indelible mark! A big guy with an impressive physique and a very
charismatic personality! Full of life and a bon vivant! We downed a few
together with others of likeminded companionship. We need more like him --
unassuming and down-to-earth even when he had so much to show off if he
chose to!

BTW your last posting about the wedding ceremonies and dances was
sensational and evoked memories. I shall look forward to more Goa nostalgia
from you.

You are a treasure!

Another link by a neuroscientist who is 'way over his head' on what he is
trying to say and post about the management of cancer in men.
One cannot be an expert by just knowing to work the web links and search
for references. One needs to know what is written in those links and
 referenced papers.
Most would have forwarded my post to the 'Goan cancer surgery expert' for
 a response.
But why should our resident 'all-knowing' expert do that? As usual, he
 knows it all.

I will not continue a dialogue on oncology with a spokesman for an
oncologist. Santosh's information and knowledge on cancer now has been
reduced to from my conversation with. Just like one sees what one
knows, very likely, one hears what one knows too. To preserve my
self-respect, this will be the last post on this subject, unless Dr.
Jayant comments on the topic. I also hope to follow the requests of the
 moderators.
 Kind Regards, GL

The above is a gratuitous distortion of a pertinent comment of a Goan
cancer surgeon and researcher, Jayant S. Vaidya. Words (namely, doing
nothing) are being shoved in his mouth. Jayant had cited the following
research paper to back up his assertion regarding the randomized trial on
evaluating the outcome of radical prostatectomy:

It might be crystal clear to you that many of us have understood what
Roland has had to say. But my Websters defines snide as mean, cheap /
obliquely malicious -- and in my opinion that is exactly the manner in
which Roland gratuitously characterized Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld
both of whom quite noted (sic) for their self-delusions on American foreign
policy.Perhaps if cheap shot would be more acceptable than snide I
would be happy to make that substitution.

Insofar as the intrusion into this thread of discussion on the U.S.
government, George Bush... perhaps your response might have been better
addressed to Roland since he brought those enterprises into the equation --
I merely responded. I try faithfully to follow Goanet diktat/s :--)

What he said was in crystal clear English that many of us have understood.

This discussion is about an article authored by Miguel Braganza. It would

appropriate to make comments related to that article. Its obvious there

take discussion down the same street over and over again.

For those who may think of responding to this thread - this is not a
