Possibly not, Carolina, as the infrastructure is rather limited, and the
first priority, I guess, would be to meet the needs of those present. But
maybe someone connected with this network could give a better reply. FN

AA PREAMBLE: Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share their
experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their
common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only
requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking; there are no dues

overload, langauge 'which feels as foreign as Sanskrit', pollution in urban
areas, water issues, drinking tap water is a gamble you don't want to
undertake, cultural differences, adapting to local customs can be a
roller-coaster ride, food delicious but can be a fiery trial by spice,
navigating the bureaucracy can be an epic saga)
02.Saudi Arabia (cultural adjustments that might make you feel you've
landed on another planet, strict cultural norms, dress codes, public
behaviour, interaction between genders, lack of entertainment options in a
traditional Western sense, movies-bar not possible, different pace of life,
climate--summer heat can be so intense, temperatures past 110degF, outdoor
activities feel like you've stepped into an oven)
03.Nigeria (wirlwind of unexpected difficulties, traffic jams, safety
concerns a major issue, security challenges, petty theft to more serious,
need to always be on high alert, lack of infrastructure, frequent power
outages)
04. Brazil (safety concerns in cities like Rio and Sao Paolo, bureaucracy,
labyrinth of paperwork, language barrier, learning Portuguese can be
trickly, cultural differences, infamous Brazilian time)
05. South Africa (alarmingly high crime rates, lack of infrastucture,
power-outage/load shedding, roads with potholes, job-market and
unpredictable economy)
06. Russia (labyrinth of paperwork, climate, frosty is an understatement,
cultural differences, language barriers, Russian is a complex language,
Cyrillic alphabet makes it tougher)
07. China (internet restrictions that could make a tech enthusiast weep,
digital desert, pollution, grey haze, cultural differences, concept of
personal space, Mandarin is notoriously difficult to learn)
08. Greece (bureaucracy, economic instability, rocky job market, lifestyle
adjustments, strikes and protests, slower pace of life)
09. Egypt ttraffic jams, climate, scorching heat, cultural adjustments)
10. Italy (redtape, job market, high unemployment, expensive cities esp for
housing)

[Goanet] DETAILS FROM Alan Machado's latest book: Discovering India Anew (Orient BlackSwan)

2024-07-04 Thread Frederick Noronha
Where does one begin to tell a story that spans many thousands of years, a
story whose origins are obscured by stubborn mists that will not lift and
enduring myths that will not shift under the weight of ages of telling?
Discovering India Anew reconstructs the history of Indian peoples, taking
off from where the history of Indians really begins: Africa. Exploring
their earliest journey out of Africa through the colonisation of South Asia
by different genetic groups to the end of South Asia’s first urban
civilisation, Harappa, and the arrival of the Indo-Aryans, the author asks
a fundamental question: Who are we Indians?
The book draws on fields as diverse as archaeology, archaeobotany,
palaeoanthropology, genetics, climatology, historical linguistics and
literary sources. Using prehistoric evidence such as rock art and stone
tools, the author studies the evolution of Homo sapiens and the dispersal
of populations across the globe, against the backdrop of global climate
changes.
It discusses the forager-farmer conflict; maps out a linguistic history of
India; traces the origin, growth, and decline of the Harappan civilisation
and its impact on subsequent Indian history, and brings out the
Mesopotamian and Elamite influence in its shaping. Through an anecdotal
narrative style, the author artfully weaves together this astonishing story
of human grit and opens new windows into our past.
Through the event of the drying up of the Sarasvati River, the book
highlights how the narrative told by myth and bias contrasts with the
alternate history revealed by modern scientific investigations. This unique
book will fascinate scholars and researchers of history as well as the
historically inclined, curious reader.

[Goanet] Traditional Goa: Waterproof glue... made from the jackfruit! (by Anthony D'Mello, Tivim)

2024-06-30 Thread Frederick Noronha
*TRADITIONAL GOA/HEM GOENKARANCHEM DAIZ...*
Waterproof glue... made from the jackfruit!

By Anthony D'Mello (Tivim)
+91 70203 78833

Long before the various brands of
synthetic super glue came to the market,
a waterproof glue made from the sap of
the jackfruit was used in Goa.

The sap would be collected in coconut
shells from the stem of the jackfruit as
soon as it was plucked from the tree. It
was then stirred vigorously with a small
stick till it became a semi-solid lump
which was then taken and pasted to the
back of the door of the house or
outhouse. More and more of the sap was
added to the lot pasted earlier on the
door.

In those days there were no plastic water
pots. Earthen pots were used for all
field work. The pots every often used to
get cracks and leaks. That's when the
dried sap would come in handy.

A piece of the dried sap would be cut
from the stock and heated in a metal
utensil or even on a local tile. A piece
of tile would be powdered and mixed
thoroughly in the heated sap and then
applied to the leaking part of the pot.
The mixture would stick to the earthen
pot and, on drying, stop the leak.

No one collects the jackfruit sap any
more. There are no earthen pots to mend.
Plastic pots are now used in the few
fields that are cultivated.

[Goanet] Yesterday's history... via Luizinho Faleiro (FN, in NT)

2024-06-29 Thread Frederick Noronha
 Yesterday's history... via Luizinho Faleiro

FN

This is a book which came out a year ago, but it was hard to find in the
bookshops. It is a topic of interest to us. It deals with yesterday's
history, issues still relevant, and ones that need to undergo intense
debate for a better understanding.

Goan society, it could be argued, does not sufficiently focus on the issues
which matter. Newspapers have a different role, and time-frame. They have
a 24-hour vision (no offence meant, but the news-cycle moves fast). Their
focus is on the immediate. Academia is not sufficiently locally-focussed.
Goa lacks independent think-tanks, though the late Matanhy Saldanha's GRID
(Goa Research Institute for Development, at Sant Inez) came close to
building one. This is where a book could play an important role.

'The Battle for Konkani and Statehood of Goa' (May 2023, Dr Francisco Luis
Gomes Memorial Trust) is politician Luizinho Faleiro's revisit to the
politics of the 1980s. But not just that decade alone. Developments of
that time were also connected to 1961 and 1967 (the 'Opinion Poll') and to
Faleiro's own evaluation of how the events from those times shape our today.

It is in the latter that one could debate the former minister's (and, for a
brief stint, ex-chief minister's) analysis. Being a participant in these
events, the main initiator of the campaigns for Konkani and Statehood as
the book would have us believe, could make any author want to give a spin
in a particular direction. Especially when this is how history could
recall a now almost-forgotten series of events, and scholars of a new
generation could be basing their analysis on works like this.

How does 'The Battle' fare on this? Download a PDF copy from
luizinhofaleiro.com [http://alturl.com/s3i4s] or buy it from amazon.in. In
the meanwhile, take this reviewer's word for it. But, as one was a close
by-stander watching these events unfold in that period, don't expect
neutrality in this review or a very 'academic' approach to the issues
involved.

* * *

Faleiro's 124-page book is a quick read. This keeps it interesting, but
you could also end up feeling the lack of detail. It covers the topic in
18 short chapters, each of which (except the last) is focussed on dates.
 1961, and the end of Portuguese rule with Operation Vijay; 1967;
particular years from the 1980s leading up to the passing of the Official
Language Act; meetings and protests held before that; the descent into
violence in December 1986; and Statehood in May 1987.

Two chapters extend Luizinho Faleiro's tryst with Goan history as his
story-line would have it. These are: a July 1991 move "protecting
employment for Goans through Konkani" and a September 1999 attempt (while
he was CM) to create a separate IAS cadre for Goa.

Faleiro, for understandable reasons, begins his story in 1961, even though
he was just a ten-year-old then. He connects this and the 'Opinion Poll'
with the shaping of his own later perception on Goa, particularly Konkani
and Statehood.

* * *

>From a wider angle, a book like this can be critiqued at two levels. It
narrates the campaign over language in Goa as a battle waged and led
primarily by politicians (of course, with Faleiro himself being at the
centre of it all).

The role played by language groups and lobbyists gets underplayed,
invisibilised or mentioned only in passing in this text; and it was huge.
The connection with party politics and intra-Congress dissidence of the
time gets only hinted at. Likewise, the role of some newspapers of the
time (mentioned, for instance, by then journalist Ashok Row Kavi in his
writings in 'The Week') gets passed off with a single hint of a reference.

This is the overall tone: "As a young MLA, I was thrust into the Konkani
movement, assuming, along with the Konkani Porjecho Avaz, the leadership of
the movement, with me handling the political side and the writers,
artistes, poets doing the rest. Yet, the movement would have not been
successful, had not the people responded to the call in the manner they
did."

Secondly, it presumes that the goals of both Konkani and Statehood were not
only accomplished as desired, but also worked for the good of the people of
this small region.

Some (or many) might agree today that the reality is different. After much
bitterness and even bloodshed, Goa got a law which dissatisfies many in the
State. This is not only due to the complete exclusion of the widely-used
Roman script but also because the way it was passed makes it
unimplementable, with the possibility of stirring up a hornet's nest for
every purpose Konkani (or Marathi) is extended to.

Faleiro, who has since moved parties, talks about being a "foot-soldier to
Goa and Goans". At one time, this was used by quite a few vis a vis the
then dominant Congress party. He writes: "Goa's crusade for Konkani and
tryst with Statehood became an integral part of my life."

The pages move on interestingly. Like any go

Ursula von der Leyen, António Costa and Kaja Kallas have been tipped to
lead the European Union in the next five years.

White smoke in Brussels.

The 27 leaders of the European Union have agreed on the bloc's political
leadership for the next five years: Ursula von der Leyen as president of
the European Commission, António Costa as president of the European
Council, and Kaja Kallas as the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and
Security Policy.

Leaders on Thursday also approved the Strategic Agenda, a document with
broad brushstrokes of ambitions that is meant to guide the future work of
the three appointees.

Von der Leyen and Kallas's nominations are not final and still require
confirmation by the European Parliament. By contrast, Costa, a former prime
minister of Portugal, is automatically elected by his former peers. He will
take office on 1 December.

"It is with a strong sense of mission that I will take up the
responsibility of being the next President of the European Council," Costa
said, thanking his socialist family and the Portuguese government for their
backing. "I will be fully committed to promoting unity between all 27
Member States and focused on putting on track the Strategic Agenda."

"This is an enormous responsibility at this moment of geopolitical
tensions," Kallas said in a statement, promising to work "with pleasure"
with both von der Leyen and Costa. "I will be at the service of our common
interests," she added. "Europe should be a place where people are free,
safe and prosperous."

Party negotiators had preemptively sealed the three-pronged deal during a
call on Tuesday and tabled their proposal on Thursday evening. After a
debate among all heads of state and government, the accord received the
formal blessing.

The talks between the centrist parties had angered those left on the
sidelines, most notably Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who lashed
out at the "surreal" way in which the top-jobs package was assembled.
Meloni, who rules the bloc's third-largest economy, called for greater
inclusion and deeper discussions.

"It seems to me that, so far, there's been an unwillingness to account for
the message delivered by citizens at the ballot box," Meloni said on the
eve of the summit.

Hungary's Viktor Orbán was more scathing, calling the deal "shameful."

Their public grievances contrasted with the apparent coolness of other
dignitaries, such as Germany's Olaf Scholz and France's Emmanuel Macron,
who were intent on wrapping up the process in a swift, uncomplicated manner.

"We are living in difficult times. We are faced with major challenges, not
least Russia's terrible war of aggression against Ukraine. It is therefore
important that Europe prepares itself now for the tasks that need to be
tackled," Scholz said upon arrival.

Diplomats in Brussels were concerned that, due to the volatile geopolitical
environment surrounding the bloc, the image of leaders haggling over
well-paid positions for hours on end would seem out of touch.

These worries, coupled with a lack of credible alternatives, made the
negotiations easier and helped positions coalesce around the three names.

"Democracy is not only about blocking, democracy is about who wants to work
together, and those three groups are willing to work together to the
benefit of all Europeans," said Belgium's Alexander De Croo, rebuking
Meloni's criticism.

"What we need in the next five years is political stability and being able
to act fast."

In the end, Meloni voted against Costa and Kallas, and abstained on von der
Leyen, several diplomats told Euronews, a largely symbolic move to express
her displeasure. For his part, Orbán voted against von der Leyen, abstained
on Kallas and supported Costa.
The chosen ones

For those following European politics, the chosen ones are familiar faces.

The Commission presidency goes to the incumbent, Ursula von der Leyen, the
Spitzenkandidat (lead candidate) of the centre-right European People's
Party (EPP).

Since announcing her re-election bid in February, von der Leyen, the first
woman to captain the executive, had been the indisputable frontrunner
thanks to her high political profile, built up while weathering the
COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine war.

During the campaign, she infuriated progressives when she made overtures to
Meloni's hard right. But the EPP's comfortable victory in the June
elections, with 188 MEPs, lessened Rome's importance in the equation and
allowed her to change her tune. Von der Leyen has

[Goanet] Former Indian Ambassador Placido Piedade D'Souza, born in Dar, 90

2024-06-22 Thread Frederick Noronha
Former Indian Ambassador Placido Piedade D'Souza, born in Dar, 90

The family of former Indian ambassador to many countries,
Placido P. D'Szoua, announced his death at the age of 90.
Maria D'Souza, his daughter wrote: "It is with profound
sadness that I share the news of the passing of my father,
Placido Piedade D’Souza, who left us on June 20, 2024, at the
age of 90. We are sending this email to you because you were
a special person in his life."

The former ambassador was a long-time Goanetter -- probably
for almost two decades -- and closely connected with Goan
issues.

Some members of the Goanet network got to know this
low-profile member in the mid or late 1990s, when
he joined this early and then influential online
social network which some of us were associated
with. His daughters have also been early members
of Goanet. Though he was born in East Africa (like
quite a few in the Goan Daizpora world) and spent
time in Poona and so many other parts of the world,
  his heart lived in Goa.

He would always encourage and comment on some new (even
small) initiative going on here, and connect those he thought
we'd be interested in.

For instance, in Jan 2019, he wrote: "I have been spending a
few days in Cayman Islands, and was pleasantly surprised to
find a number of Goans more or less settled here. I met two
of them working in a local hotel and was pleasantly surprised
to see that they spoke fluent Konkani and showed the usual
nostalgia for Goa and things Goan. They had even invited
some teatrists from Goa and provided entertain at
get-togethers after the celebrations of St. Francis Xavier
etc. I thought I should let you know as you have always been
interested in Goans abroad."

Placido was born in 1933 in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania to
Benedict (aka Leopoldo Goncalo) and Nascimenta D'Souza. When
Placido was 8 years old, the family returned to India and
settled in Pune where Placido attended St. Vincent's School
and later Nowrosjee Wadia College where he received his
bachelor's and master's degrees.

In 1957 after graduating from university, he joined the
Indian Foreign Service where he served as a career diplomat
for 34 years before retiring in 1991. He relished the
opportunity work alongside Jawaharlal Nehru and other
architects of India's independence. "I was proud to be part
of an establishment that was steering an independent course,"
he said. "To be able to work for someone like Nehru was to
have one of my wildest dreams come true."

In 1962, he married Sushila Lalvani and they had four
children -- Jacinta, Lucia, Francisco, and Maria.

During his career, he was accredited as India's envoy and
presented credentials in 16 countries, five territories, and
two UN organizations. Early his career, he held posts at the
Embassies of India in Berne, Jakarta, Nairobi, and Addis
Ababa.

In 1973, he achieved the rank of Ambassador and
established the Indian Embassy in Panama, Costa
Rica, and Nicaragua. He went on to serve as
Ambassador of India to Zaire (now the DRC), Congo
(Brazzaville), Gabon, Central African Republic, and
Equatorial Guinea. Shortly thereafter he was
appointed Indian Consul General in New York and
later served as High Commissioner of India to
Trinidad and Tobago (where his jurisdiction
included ten other Caribbean nations and
territories), Commissioner of India to Hong Kong
and Consul General to Macau. He returned to Kenya
in 1989 serving as High Commissioner of India for
  three years until his retirement.

During his career, he returned periodically to New Delhi to
serve in various positions in the Ministry of External
Affairs. He also served as a member of the Indian delegation
to two of the seven sessions of the UN Security Council that
have been held outside New York == in Panama and Addis Ababa.

In addition to Placido's distinguished service as a diplomat,
he was a prolific journalist and artist. He wrote hundreds
of articles, for at least five dailies in countries where he
served, and innumerable articles for other newspapers and
magazines. He created and edited three journals while in
service, all of which were widely praised: Revista India,
Darshan, and New India Digest, the last of which ran for 15
years under his stewardship as he continued to publish it
after his retirement.

Placido's first love was art. He expressed that love by
drawing portraits of the world leaders and other prolific
individuals that he met during his career. Each portrait is
unique in that the individual subject of the sketch has
signed it. Many of these sketches were compiled and
published into a book, Portraits of Power.

He was invited to exhibit these portraits at the United
Nations headquarters in 2009 where he also presented the then
UN Secretary General, Ban Ki

Konkani in the Roman (Romi) script is currently not recognised for official

Konkani initiatives (such as WhatsApp groups and a multi-script Wikipedia)
have been launched. But it's never enough; there is a long way to go. To
take the language (and script) forward, a pressing need has been felt for a
comprehensive, updated, and easy-to-access Konkani-English dictionary.
This was built through long years of work by the Pune-based author,
translator, lexicographer and long-time Konkani promoter Isidore Dantas.

This initiative drew crowd-funding support at an early stage. The

[Goanet] Motets... in the Goa of the 16th century and today (article by Deepti Coutinho)

2024-03-21 Thread Frederick Noronha
Santos Passos & Motets | Tradition of Christian Sacred Music for Lent
March 9, 2016 admin
Pic source: saligaoserenade.com

Lent is a very special time for every Christian faithful. The 40 days
represent the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation
of satan and preparing to begin his ministry. In the Konkani language,
Goans commonly use the term ‘korezm’, which is derived from the Portuguese
‘quaresma’, meaning forty – evidently signifying the forty days in
imitation of Christ’s sojourn in the desert. Christians are called to
prepare for this time through prayer, reflection, penance and charitable
works, during Lent.

Goa has a rich tradition of Christian Sacred Music, which helps us to pray
more meaningfully. In Goa during lent, all forms of entertainment would
come to a standstill. The only form of drama was the ‘Santos Passos’,
literally the ‘holy steps’, through which scenes from the passion of Jesus
were depicted using large statues. The Jesuit priest, Gaspar Barzeo, is
said to have introduced these theatrical-type representations in Goa, in
the XVI century. These pious tableaus portraying the Lord’s sufferings were
accompanied by the singing of peculiar Lenten songs, which took on a
special form, known as the ‘motet’. It is interesting to note that Fr.
Barzeo was a close collaborator (assistant) of St. Francis Xavier. Hence,
one cannot rule out the hand of our beloved Gõycho Saib in the ‘santos
passos’ and in the genesis of the Goan ‘motet’. The rendering of these
somber and awe-inspiring chants was inter spaced with reflections on
Christian life and morals in the light of the Scriptures, delivered by a
priest, who usually employed a rhetorical flair. A young member of the
community was trained by the village choir-master (mestre da igreja) to
sing the hymn of ‘Veronica’.

A Young Girl (Ms. Ruchita Gomes) performing the hymn ‘Veronica’

It is important to note that the Goan motet is quite different in style,
rhythm and harmony from the motet found in other parts of the Catholic
world. Some musicologists have opined that the Goan motet, developed by
native composers, was the result of a fusion of Western and Eastern musical
elements. These motets are unique pieces of Goan Catholic sacred music, and
can be considered as a fine example of inculturation of Catholic sacred
music in Goa. Originally, they were sung by men alone, in a four voice
arrangement. It is to be recalled that till the middle of the XX century,
singing in the Church was the prerogative of men. The voice which sang the
uppermost notes was called Tiple, followed by the Alto voice (equally high,
but lower than the Tiple), then the Tenor and finally the Bass voice. While
males are known to sing the Alto, Tenor and Bass voices even today, it is
rather interesting to imagine how the Tiple was sung. Either the Tiple
singers had very high and fine voices (rather girlish in timbre) like the
“sopranist” voices still sung by some in Europe, or they were castrated
males, or they used the “falsetto”. The third option appears to be the most
plausible.

The instruments used to accompany these sacred chants were carefully
chosen: two violins, two clarinets and one rabecão (three stringed
double-bass).

Goan motets are indigenous musical compositions of quite high standard,
produced by native Goan mestris. The text was biblical and was usually a
very short phrase from the passion narrative. . This method can be said to
be similar to the Benedictine monastic method of meditation, or even quite
near to the Indian mantra-type prayer.

In the present day, only a few parishes in Goa still preserve the tradition
of motet singing, in the traditional style. It is a pity that we are
gradually losing something that is ours! The tradition of Motet is much
older than even Mando- Dulpodam. Hopefully , our present generation helps
awakening their parishes to put talents together and to produce edifying
and rich music for Lent, in their own parishes.

ABSTRACT

This article continues the initial documentary work on South African Kokni
begun in Mesthrie, Kulkarni-Joshi and Paradkar (2016). The language (known
as Konkani in India) has been in existence for over 125 years in South
Africa, with Cape Town as its main base. We characterise the extent to
which the language is still used and the social circumstances under which
this takes place. We highlight historical research on the strong
transnational mobility of older speakers in Cape Town and their keen
awareness of village roots in India. Our investigations on the Konkan coast
of India confirm the strong historical and linguistic links between the
area and Cape Town. We present our preliminary findings on the dialect
characteristics of the Cape Town variety, mainly in relation to
morphological variation, based on our fieldwork of 2016–2017. There is
initial support for the hypothesis that significant variation based on
villages of origin persists well over a hundred years after the initial
migrations. We conclude by addressing some dilemmas concerning language
maintenance and shift.

Aquino de Bragança was a close advisor to Samora Machel, former president
of Mozambique. Both lost their lives when their plane crashed at Mbuzini in
October 1986.

Born in Goa, fluent in French as well as Portuguese, and trained as a
scientist, Aquino dedicated his life to the liberation struggles of
southern Africa. He was a militant journalist, an academic, a diplomat, and
a public intellectual. His skill in sensitive and discreet political
negotiation earned him the nickname ‘the submarine’ and he played a key
role in Frelimo’s early contacts with the Portuguese, leading eventually to
independence in 1975.

Illustrated with contemporary photographs, *Aquino de Braganca*: *Independence
and Revolution in Portuguese-speaking Africa* brings together a selection
of his post-independence writings and interviews, many published in English
for the first time. The editors – both specialists on Lusophone Africa –
provide a general introduction to Aquino’s life and thought, as well as
short contextual preambles to each of the twelve texts.

‘What a treasure! This collection provides a vast amount of information
about the character of the Mozambican Revolution and the debates that
surrounded it. Aquino’s words evoke the spirit of the times, the hopes,
fears, disappointments, joys and speculations of a generation of activist
scholars willing to devote all their energies, and give their lives if
necessary, to the emancipation of humankind.’–Albie Sachs

[Goanet] Konkani In The Roman Script: A Short Grammatical Study (Ricardo Cabral).... Emigration, Tourism, In-migration and Occupational Diversification in Betalbatim - Goa (Afonso M Botelho)

2024-02-20 Thread Frederick Noronha
Konkani is an excitingly complex language because it has gone through
different historical situations down the ages. Because they found it both
appealing and useful for their labours the foreign missionaries made
numerous attempts to bring Konkani to 'book' so to say. Being familiar with
the Roman script they applied it also to Konkani but faced a lot of
challenges. Some of the challenges persisted till date. So, there was
always a felt need to satisfactorily explain the syntax of the language. An
attempt therefore has been made to put into perspective some of the
grammatical relations found in the Konkani language. Some doable
suggestions have also been made in overcoming some of the existing

[Goanet] Goan architectural heritage in a concise book

2024-02-18 Thread Frederick Noronha
13 Dec 2023 | 05:01am ISTGoan architectural heritage in a concise bookA
book focusing on the architecture as well as history of Goa, ‘Heritage at
the Crossroads: Preservation of Goa’s Architectural Treasures’, edited by
Joaquim Rodrigues dos Santos, will be released today, December 13, at
Fundacao Oriente. Almost five years in the making, the book features some
of the top Goan, Indian and Portuguese conservationists and those who
worked closely on preserving various monuments in Goa
[image: Goan architectural heritage in a concise book]

Dolcy D’Cruz

Did you know that the Gate of the Palace of Adil Shah at Old Goa which is a
national monument is actually a folly ruin built by the Portuguese in 1906?
There are many interesting facets of Goa’s architecture which is buried in
the pages of books in the archives which hardly reaches a wider audience.
Joaquim Rodrigues dos Santos is an architect and PhD expert in heritage
preservation, researcher and professor at the University of Lisbon, who has
been undertaking investigation on the Indo-Portuguese architectural
heritage. He has been visiting Goa for almost two decades and almost every
year since he was studying his post doctorate.

He has edited the book, ‘Heritage at the Crossroads: Preservation of Goa’s
Architectural Treasures,’ which will be released today, December 13 at 6 pm
at Fundacao Oriente, Panjim. It brings together scholars, technicians,
heritage lovers and passionate conservationists. The book published by
Caleidoscopio in Portugal, is supported by the ARTIS – Institute of Art
History, School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon,
Consulate General of Portugal, Camões - Instituto da Cooperação e da
Língua, Lisbon, Fundacao Oriente and Casa De Goa (House of Goa) in Lisbon.
The book can be purchased online through the publisher’s website.

The 20 chapters of the 389 pages are filled with beautiful and crisp
photographs of monuments, maps, plans as well as rare paintings. Each
chapter is well researched and the authors have given utmost attention to
every aspect of the topic. The idea for the book was inspired by the many
conferences that Joaquim organised at Fundacao Oriente in Panjim. “When I
came to Goa in 2015 for my post doctorate which was about ‘The Preservation
of Heritage in Portuguese Influences in Goa, Daman and Diu during the
Portuguese Period’, I came across experts here. The following year, I used
to invite them to conferences in front of an audience with several
lectures. So after three or four conferences, I realized that there were
just a few scattered text here and there. And it would be good to have new
and revised text in a single book. I invited the authors to write something
for the book. The last chapter is from probably one of the best Portuguese
art historians, Vitor Serrao, about painting, because it's not only
architecture that is the most important thing,” says Joaquim, who arrived
in Goa with just five copies of thebook.

Theauthors are from Goa, India and Portugal writing about Goa. “My idea
since the beginning was to make a book about Goa for the Goans. Goan
heritage is somehow being distorted or vanishing or, and this is something
which is very painful for me. I wanted to have this book published here. I
was not able to get the publisher. Interestingly, Caleidoscopio, which is
the best Portuguese publisher in Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences,
immediately asked to publish this book, when they heard of it,” adds
Joaquim.

The first chapter of the book is by Percival Noronha, a strong defender of
history and heritage of Goa. “This book is in memory of Percival Noronha
and Paulo Varela Gomes, because he used to say that we don’t have
Indo-Portuguese arts, it is Goan art, and it is unique. It should be
studied and preserved. Percival’s chapter was published by Fundacao Oriente
and his family allowed us to include it because it is a good introduction
to the context of the Goan architecture within India. An article I wrote
was also published in Portuguese in Portugal. I think it would be useful to
have in English here,” explains Joaquim.

Nizamuddin Taher was the former director of World Heritage Archaeological
Survey of India (ASI) and he mentioned the works of ASI since 1961 until he
was in Goa. Divay Gupta was the leader of INTACH and he talks about the
‘Role of INTACH in conserving Goa’s built heritage’. Ashish Rege wrote
about the houses in Margao, and about the architecture of Goa. “This
chapter is also very interesting, because it's not only talks about
architecture of Goa, but also how to make the traditional plasters, the
lime plasters, how to apply etc. This chapterwas published in Portuguese in
Portugal. I think it's interesting to bring it here in English.”

Alice Santiago Faria writes about the ‘The importance of preserving the
everyday public architecture in Goa’. He elaboarates, “She wrote a small
chapter about the everyday public architecture. Although a public building

If you live in Goa, are interested in the state, or considering investing
in housing here, watch this video! A recent court order has shaken the
foundations of planning and development in the state. In a landmark order,
the Bombay High Court has stayed several plans, and rebuked politicians for
interfering and arbitrarily converting natural, coastal and slopy land for
development. This will have lasting effects! This is an opinion piece,
intended to be fair use. I have over-simplified many elements of the case
so that more people can engage with the core issues, as well as whom I
think is to blame. I advise my viewers to watch the excellent video by
Swapnesh Sherlekar @SushagatGoykar and read the judgement to arrive at your
own conclusions.

2024-02-10 Thread Frederick Noronha
nt literature is a
phenomenon of its early Romanticism. As for the
passion for classical India in Goan poetry written
in the Portuguese language, its peak dates from the
turn of the century. This text aims to understand
this phenomenon as a transnational manifestation of
  nativist discourse in Portuguese-speaking
territories. In order to understand indianist
poetry, one has to study its socio-cultural
meanings and to investigate the ways in which
European literary forms are transformed through it,
which will be done through a carefull reading of
Gonçalves Dias’ and Paulino Dias’ poems.

IF GOA IS YOUR LAND, WHICH ARE YOUR STORIES? Narrating the
Village, Narrating Home
Cielo Griselda Festino GRAGOATÁ (DEC 2016)

Goa, India, is a multicultural community with a
broad archive of literary narratives in Konkani,
Marathi, English and Portuguese. While Konkani in
its Devanagari version, and not in the Roman script,
has been Goa’s official language since 1987, there
are many other narratives in Marathi, the neighbor
state of Maharashtra, in Portuguese, legacy of the
Portuguese presence in Goa since 1510 to 1961, and
English, result of the British colonization of India
until 1947. This situation already reveals that
there is a relationship among these languages and
cultures that at times is highly conflictive at a
political, cultural and historical level. In turn,
they are not separate units but are profoundly
interrelated in the sense that histories told in one
language are complemented or contested when narrated
in the other languages of Goa. One way to relate
them in a meaningful dialogue is through a common
metaphor that, at one level, will help us expand our
knowledge of the points in common and cultural and
literary differences among them all. In this
article, the common metaphor to better visualize the
complex literary tradition from Goa will be that of
the village since it is central to the social
structure not only of Goa but of India. Therefore,
it is always present in the many Goan literary
narratives in the different languages though from
perspectives that both complement and contradict
each other. --- Original in English.

Post-colonial literature from India needs to move
away from the tendency to focus on just a British
Indian framework and broaden its perspective to
include wider frameworks including the Luso-Indian
framework. This original ‘ghost story’ is just one
example of Goan Gothic literature that has emerged
from the influence of four hundred and fifty-one
years of the Portuguese colonial experience in Goa,
South India. The author is a Goan migrant and
Adult Third Culture Kid, currently living in Goa.
This story has been adapted and embellished, based

Contribuição para uma história do conto de língua portuguesa em Goa
Helder Garmes (Acta Scientiarum: Language and Culture)
shadows: an anthology of Goan short stories translated from
portuguese (2015), entre outros, narraram a história do
desenvolvimento desse gênero literário em Goa. Nosso intuito

[Goanet] Kudds' federation to hold meeting in Goa

2023-12-12 Thread Frederick Noronha
FEDERATION OF ALL GOAN CLUBS (Kudd), Mumbai
108/109, Fram Mahal, 544 Kalbadevi Road, Dhobitalao, Mumbai 400 002. Phone:
9819995828

FEDERATION OF ALL GOAN CLUBS (Kudd), Mumbai organizes an open meeting
on Clubs (Kudd) affairs on 17 th December 2023 at 10.00 am. at the Rosary
School Hall, Opp. the Rosary Church, Navelim, Goa. Mr. Elias Vaz,
President, All India Catholic Union and Rev. Fr. Gabriel Coutinho, Parish
Priest, Rosary Church, Navelim will grace the gathering as the chief guest
and guest of honour, respectively.

The meeting will be preceded by a Thanksgiving Holy Eucharist at Our Lady
of Rosary Church, Navelim, at 8.30 am. Club
members, irrespective of whether their Clubs are members of the Federation
or not, as well as Members of all Goan Catholic Associations are most
welcome to join in.

After the last meeting of the Club Federation in Goa, many clubs got the
Registration done on a large scale except a few clubs who are yet to be
registered with Charity Commissioner, Mumbai under Trust Act and Society’s
Registration Act 1960.

We had to call this meeting again due to various other problems.

We intend to accept views, suggestions and guidance so that we are able to
solve the problems through your help and compliance. A few clubs are left
and its our responsibility to save them for posterity. Today there are very
few members in the clubs. The fees charged are not enough to meet the
various expenditures like rent, electricity bills, maintenance, etc.

Funds are also required for writing of accounts, file Returns with Charity
Commissioner and Income Tax Authorities, to pay for getting Pan Card, etc.
Pan card is required to get electricity Bill transferred in Club’s name.
This is required to show proof to Court that the premises belong to the
Registered club and not to the individuals in whose names the Rent receipt
is issued then since the clubs were not Registered. The members on whose
names the Rent Receipt was issued were the Managers of the club then and
their heirs have no right of inheritance of the rented properties.

The expenses are also required to get the Lawyer to obtain affidavit from
the heirs of the deceased members in whose names the Rent Receipts are
issued by Landlord, to declare that they have no personal interest as their
Fathers/Grandfathers were the Managers of the clubs holding the rent
receipts on behalf of the clubs.

This is necessary as some legal heirs have sold some clubs and a few of
them are in court with Landlords claiming their right. This property is a
gift by ancestors for the benefit of the members in their respective
villages. The value of rented properties are sky rocketing in crores.
Landlords are going to court to vacate the clubs.

The clubs in Mumbai are an asset and an identity of the Goans. Some people
cannot afford to come to Mumbai because accomodation is too costly. Even if
they have relations or friends, they cannot accommodate them due to
shortage of space.

Club Members must not give up on clubs in Mumbai just because they are now
in a position to live without clubs. We have to come forward and help the
clubs to raise funds to renovate the premises, provide bedding, proper
electricity, put up partitions and make rooms for families. If proper set
up is done, clubs will get many visitors who will pay on daily basis.

Herds of Catholics all over India will come to Goa next November to January
for the Exposition of the relics of St. Francis Xavier. This is an
excellent opportunity for us to make accommodation available at affordable
cost in clubs in Mumbai, so that they can book their tickets to visit
Mumbai and Goa.

The President and the members of the Managing Committee of the Federation
are committed to help the members to the best of their ability.

Fausto V. Da Costa
(Vice-President-Goa)

BOATS IN GOA: [Zeeshan Alli Shaikh*Archaeology, Faculty of
Humanities, University of Southampton, Centre for Maritime
Archaeology, Southampton, UK] Goa is a small state on the
west coast of India with an area of 3,701 km. Its geographic
position ismarked by 15048 00 00 00 N and 14053 0 54 00 N
Latitude and 74020 0 13 00 E and 73040 0 33 00 E Longitude.
Major rivers, such as Zuari and Mandovi, and minor rivers,
such as Sal, Tiracol, and Chapora, flow in Goa. Goa shares
its boundary with Maharashtra state in the north, in the
South with the northern part of Karnataka, in the east with
the Sahyadri mountain range, and in the west with the Arabian
Sea. Sandy beaches separated by rocky headlands, cliffs, and
broad estuaries have fashioned the coast line of Goa. Such a
geography and geomorphology have contributed greatly to the
development of a boatbuilding industry and distribution of
different types of traditional boats. Traditional folk songs
of Goa often mention Vodem which means boat. There are boat
motifs portrayed on ancient memorial stones (Fig. 1) which
suggests that the people of Goa were aware of the art of
boatbuilding from ancient times (Gaur & Kerkar, 2007; Kamat,
2008). The people of Goawho have continued their profession
of fishing and preserved their traditional knowledge about
boatbuilding till today are locally known as Kharvi.

MID-HOLOCENE FOSSIL WOOD FROM COLVA: Kale VS, and Rajaguru
SN. 1983. Mid-Holocene fossil wood from Colva, Goa.
Current Science 52(16):778-779. The fossil wood was dated by
the radiocarbon method as 6430 +/- 110 years BP. The
location of the fossil wood in the lithosection demonstrates
that the horizon lies about 1.5 to 2.5 m below the present

wood and the radio carbon date of the wood suggests that
during the mid-Holocene, the sea level was lower than the

[Goanet] Database of individuals sentenced by the Inquisition of Goa from 1650-1806

2023-11-30 Thread Frederick Noronha
A database of individuals sentenced by the Inquisition of Goa from
1650-1806, compiled by Alan Machado (lead researcher), Bruno Feitler, and
Carlos Rocha, has been uploaded into the repository of Universidade Federal
de São Paulo. The repository also preserves a database of defendants from
1561-1623 compiled in 2012 from the Reportorio prepared by the prosecutor
at that time, João Delgado Figueira.
The 1650-1806 database has been compiled from the lists of autos-da-fé
(acts of faith) that had been periodically sent to Lisbon from Goa, and
escaped destruction when most of the Inquisition’s archive was destroyed
after its final abolition in 1812. It is important to note that this
database is not exhaustive as there may still be uncatalogued documentation
in the Archivo Nacional de Torre do Tombo and the Biblioteca Nacional de
Portugal in Lisbon.
An auto-da-fe was mainly a ceremony for the reintegration of penitents into
the Church. It was composed of a sermon, the public reading of sentences
and the lifting of excommunication for those whose confessions were deemed
satisfactory. Those with unsatisfactory confessions or who remained
recalcitrant were handed over to secular justice for execution. Those
sentenced to other physical penalties, such as lashes or banishment,
were also delivered to secular justice.
In the database, details of the defendants are given in columns in an excel
sheet, with a code assigned to each one. These details include their names,
sex, age, caste, ethnicity, occupation, places of birth and residence,
offences they were charged with, and the spiritual, physical, and/or
pecuniary penalties imposed. Further details, where available, are given in
the
column titled “observations”.
Reference details are provided in two columns, one giving the physical
location of the document, and the other the location of the digitized
version, where available. A link is provided for each available digitized
version so that anyone interested can access the original document located
in the ANTT or BNP.
In total, this database contains records of 8,250 defendants, the
vast majority being men: 6,257 (more than 75%). Of the total number, 1,923
(just over 23%) were non-Christians: 1,708 "Gentiles", 56 "Moors", and 159
defendants who were labelled as Christians but converted during the
inquisitorial proceedings. The overwhelming number of offences among both
Christians and non-Christians related to gentilidade or Indian religious
practices. Of the total number sentenced, the number executed was 95
(1.15%), and the bones/ effigies of another 111 were burnt.
No non-Christian was executed.
This database is a valuable addition to the growing body of information on
the activities of Goa’s Inquisition, and is certain to shed more light on
it, and its impact on local populations.

This book is still in print. While it deals with recipes, it also has a
number of "home remedies".
QUOTE: More than half the book is taken by the home encyclopedia which has
home remedies for everything from sore eyes to snake bites and scorpion
stings. There is a section on how to guard against burglars, how to clean
ivory articles and how to buy a cow by checking her udders. There is even a
section on sex education. UNQUOTE
One might add that it comes from the Mangalorean community, whoise food,
language and home remedies are close to Goa they being (centuries-old)
outmigrants from here.

Portuguese PM António Costa resigns over lithium deal probe

António Costa submitted his resignation to President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa
By Ana Nicolaci da Costa
BBC News

Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa resigned after investigators
searched his official residence in an inquiry into alleged corruption.

He said he had not been named as a suspect but believed the inquiry was
incompatible with staying in office.

Prosecutors said on Tuesday they were investigating concessions awarded for
lithium mines and hydrogen production.

They said detention warrants were issued for five people including Mr
Costa's chief of staff, Vítor Escária.

Público newspaper reported that Mr Escária had been detained.

Infrastructure Minister João Galamba has meanwhile been indicted as part of
the inquiry into energy deals.

"The dignity of the functions of prime minister is not compatible with any
suspicion about his integrity, his good conduct and even less with the
suspicion of the practice of any criminal act," the prime minister said in
a televised address on Tuesday.

Mr Costa said he was caught by surprise by the corruption investigation but
promised to collaborate with it.

"There is no illicit act that weighs on my conscience, or even any
censurable act," he added.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he had accepted the prime minister's
resignation and summoned political parties for consultations on Wednesday.

Villagers up in arms over plans to mine lithium

The political crisis unfolded after prosecutors published a statement
detailing searches in more than 40 different premises as part of the
inquiry.

Prosecutors are investigating alleged corruption and influence peddling in
lithium mining concessions in northern Portugal, as well as a hydrogen
production project and the planned construction of a data centre in the
deep-water port of Sines, south of Lisbon.

About 140 detectives searched 17 residential properties and 25 other
premises, including the office of the prime minister's chief of staff and
two government ministries.

They also searched municipal offices in Sines.

Portugal's main PSI 20 share index was down almost 3% as the political
crisis unfolded.

The European Union is keen to reduce its dependence on mines in China,
Africa and South America for lithium and other raw materials needed for the
green energy transition.

Portugal's lithium reserves are considered central to Europe's increasing
demand for electric cars, but exploration projects have faced opposition by
some locals.

ST. MICHAEL'S CHURCH
Series of three concerts held in October 2023 by Stuti Choral and String
Ensemble. The shows were held at Loutolim, Anjuna and Old Goa. This is from
St Michael's Church, Anjuna on Saturday, Oct 14, 2023 at 7 pm.

STUTI is directed by Parvesh Java. Concertmaster is Eshvita Menezes.
Pianists are Nadine Jo Crasto and Smit Shah. String ensemble leaders are
Judyline Fernandes, Chernoll Mendonca, Shannon Fernandez, Joy Peter,
Saranga Cooray and Jasiel Peter. Vocal soloists were Farah Ghadiali, Oscar
Castellino, Rahul Bharadwaj and Subin Mathai.

See stutigoa.com for more details The pieces are quite simply called
“Requiem” by Brahms. "Not 'German Requiem' as people like to think,"
conductor Parvesh Java told this channel. "There is a history to the name,
but it wasn’t Brahms’ own choice." The soloists this evening were Farah
Ghadiali (Movt 5) and Rahul Bharadwaj (Movt 3, 6). See stutigoa.com for
more details.

[Goanet] DEATH: Mosin Menezes, the Delhi-based talented pianist who earned a reputation for rendering Bollywood hits

2023-10-05 Thread Frederick Noronha
Jurgen Mycroft Pacheco [+91 97645 97679] announced via the Jazz Goa
whatsapp group the death of his uncle Mosin Menezes. Menezes was a very
talented pianist based in Delhi, best known (as far as I am aware) of his
rendering of Bollywood hits tastefully on the piano. Plus, a lot more piano
work. I recall listing many times over to a cassette tape in the 1980s.

In 2008, Khabar, the Indo-American magazine wrote: "Today Mosin Menezes is
one of India’s most accomplished musicians. He is an excellent pianist, and
an innovative arranger and composer. He is very much on the jazz scene."

You can find Mosin's recordings on Spotify online, but as these are
copyrighted by some megacorp, you'll need a premium account to listen to
the same. See his piano musings here:

Description

This book clarifies the crucial role of periodical press in the advance of
colonial print cultures and public debates in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

The Colonial Periodical Press in the Indian and Pacific Ocean Regions is a
venture of the International Group for Studies of Colonial Periodical Press
of the Portuguese Empire (IGSCP-PE), which also invests in comparative
studies and conceptual discussions. Moving around urban shores of the
Indian and Pacific Oceans, it approaches the crucial role of periodical
press in the development of colonial print cultures and public debates in
these regions. By being mostly focused on press from spaces and peoples
under the domain of the Portuguese Empire, it addresses a bibliographical
gap in international discussions moved by the field. The outcome reflects
an investment in offering decentred and de-nationalized approaches to the
colonial print cultures and press histories under study, working as a
platform for regional dialogues and comparative perspectives. The studies
presented allow a better understanding of transits and connections of both
an imperial and a trans-imperial nature, contributing to the consolidation
of comparative approaches in the studies of European empires and
colonialisms.

This volume is indispensable for scholars and students in media studies,
modern history, cultural studies, literary studies and political science.
