The GUI CPRS is the windows program that most people
think of as VistA. It is what one uses to browse

Re: [Hardhats-members] I cant seem to connect to the RPC Listener

2005-06-02 Thread Lloyd Milligan
Mark, The RPCTest program should work with any GT.M version, or for that
matter any M platform that supports VistA. Yesterday you said you were
still seeing the same error recorded in the Kernel error log as before. Is
this still the case? If so, this error cannot be ignored. Are you able to
open the null device from the programmer prompt, for example,

GTMD ^%ZIS

DEVICE: HOME// NULL BIT BUCKET

GTMW POP
0
GTMW IO
/dev/null
GTM

The above is what you should see under GT.M for Linux (except for the device
location name, which may differ on your system). You don't need 2 or 3 null
devices, just the one appropriate to the OS.

Lloyd

Re: [Hardhats-members] I cant seem to connect to the RPC Listener

2005-06-02 Thread Kevin Toppenberg
As newcomers start using VistA, this is a common first
problem. It seems like I struggled for 2-3 days
before getting it working.

For future reference, I would like to develop a list
of possible causes communication failure. I'll write
what I can think of. Maybe others can add to the
list.

REASONS FOR FAILURE TO CONNECT:
1. Server problem
  -- configuration problem (example?)
  -- RPC listener not started
-- incorrect port (mismatch vs. client)
-- GTM version 5.00-FT2 needed for newer clients
2. Network problem
-- no physical connection between computers
  -- server-side firewall
  -- client-side (e.g. Windows desktop) firewall
  -- intervening firewall/router causing NAT
3. Client problem
-- incorrect IP address specified for server
-- incorrect port (not matching server)
  -- version mismatch to server

Can anyone think of other issues?

As a recent newcomer, I had problems with:
-- no device defined for port 9200,
-- box/vol and Linux system name matching
-- a simple thing as not knowing where to run commands - from GTM versus Linux - the mupip for example
-- and I've yet to get a printer functioning - my next challenge.

RE: [Hardhats-members] I cant seem to connect to the RPC Listener

2005-06-02 Thread Kevin Toppenberg
Regarding printers,

I worked hard to get a printer going. I finally did,
by writing the print job to a file, then passing it to
the lpr service on linux, which forwards it to the
printer. I'd be happy to help you with this if you
want.

But after I put in all that hard work, I realized that
90% of my printing is done from the windows CPRS
client. And from there you can just use windows
printers. So that would probably be the better way to
go.

As newcomers start using VistA, this is a common
 first
problem. It seems like I struggled for 2-3 days
 before getting it working.

For future reference, I would like to develop a list
of possible causes communication failure. I'll
 write
what I can think of. Maybe others can add to the
 list.

 REASONS FOR FAILURE TO CONNECT:
 1. Server problem
   -- configuration problem (example?)
   -- RPC listener not started
-- incorrect port (mismatch vs. client)
-- GTM version 5.00-FT2 needed for newer clients
 2. Network problem
-- no physical connection between computers
   -- server-side firewall
   -- client-side (e.g. Windows desktop) firewall
   -- intervening firewall/router causing NAT
 3. Client problem
-- incorrect IP address specified for server
-- incorrect port (not matching server)
   -- version mismatch to server

Can anyone think of other issues?

If you are familiar with other MUMPSen, please download the GT.M
Acculturation CD (from http://sourceforge.net/projects/sanchez-gtm),
burn it, boot it and go through the exercises. It will make clear what
you do from inside GT.M (MUMPS language stuff) and what you do from the
Linux shell (just about everything else, including administration and
operations).

I think it is essential first to understand the event recorded in the Kernel
error trap. Unfortunately the summary you quoted appears to reflect a
generated error and is uninformative. It is possible the full error listing
might reveal additional clues. Try entering ^L at the Which symbol?

RE: [Hardhats-members] I cant seem to connect to the RPC Listener

2005-06-01 Thread Jim Self
As I understand it, the NULL device is a kludge to hide unwanted output from
API's in
VistA that are supposed to be I/O free but are not. The silent Fileman DBS
API's, for
instance, supposedly communicate with their calling applications entirely by
setting
values in arrays designated by their input parameters (see
http://www.hardhats.org/fileman/pm/db_intro.htm), but they sometimes produce
I/O on their
current device intended for the old dumb terminal interface.

I encountered this while experimenting with the API's for field validation,
such as
CHK^DIE, with web applications.

This means that servers such as the CPRS broker and M2Web must USE a NULL
device or other
alternate device before calling any VistA API's or risk having their
server-to-client
communications broken by unwanted I/O.

No error necessary.

from your command prompt in Linux run the netstat command like so.

netstat -an | grep 9200

you should see output like so it the listener is running on port 9200 and
listening for connections.

tcp0 0 0.0.0.0:92000.0.0.0:* LISTEN

I think this is an oversight of the programming, not
an error. It simply starts the process and then
ensures that it is running. I have never gotten an

Re: [Hardhats-members] I cant seem to connect to the RPC Listener

2005-05-31 Thread Kevin Toppenberg
Ok. First, were you administrator with you typed
iptables -L? On my system, it will say command not
found if I don't first do a su -.

If you have the RPC listener running on your server,
and you have no firewalls on either end for ports
9200, and you run RPCBroker test with appropriate IP
addresses and ports, then you SHOULD get something.

What error are you getting?

Re: [Hardhats-members] I cant seem to connect to the RPC Listener

2005-05-31 Thread Lloyd Milligan
It appears you have verified that the listener is running and that your
(client) firewall is not blocking callback. Have you checked the VistA
Kernel error log for any relevant entries? From the programmer prompt, DO
^XTER and so forth.
