I have though about this on & off in the past years.
Damn it's been a long time
we've been chatting back & forth!

The only need I have is for my games to be playable.
This is of course limited
by budget of which I currently have none! Not too bad
since I have a card fast
enough for HL2 and only really get to play a few hours
a month since I took on
role of "nanny" for my girl friend's kids last year!

I miss being able to play hours on end and I also miss
making the big bucks
since being under/unemployed these past 3 years. One
is a sign of getting older,
I am afraid so might the other be... :(

Anyone have work in the eastern boonies of Wa state
for an aging geek with lots
of non-specific PC skills? LOL!

Also you may find you're blocked from accessing pics &
ringtones by your
carriers *cough*Verizon*cough* choice of features.

The software for motorola's is Mobil Phone Tools but
you can also use the
various free P2K packages to access the file system
directly for copying off

supposedly you need one made for

moto-knockoff cable I bought off

I haven't checked prices as 1. I don't plan on ever
loading vista, 2. None of my

Unless you have a need to go bleeding edge & Vista

finally ships), I'd stick with the X1950 level cards

I like the Sonata series cases. I've built many machines on it, and it is my
standard case for sub-$1000 or 1200 builds--but I generally find it
sub-optimal for true performance builds. It is built for quiet, which is
generally incompatible with the high power demands, heat generation, and
physical space requirements of a performance build. I generally go Lian-Li
for those. :)

Yeah I read there was a way to setup the color profile in the new egg
reviews, basically it read google "setup color profile model #" or
something and it corrected the color issues... Not sure if that
addresses the issues... does it? I checked out that viewsonic its 420
and I dont mind playing more to get the best or better - however it's
not a wide screen. If I am gonna dump my (i still love it) 21inch .22 crt
- I want a wide screen. I'll search newegg for "p-mva" next... Local
not an option I live in the sticks.

The 226BW seems to be a decent display...the fast response time will be good
for gaming. However, this model is a 6-bit TN+ panel. TN+ panels do not have
the best color reproduction (S-IPS does) or black levels, and most of them
are 6-bit displays, including this one. That means that it is only truly
capable of displaying 262,144 colors, and must use dithering technology to
emulate the advertised higher color range. The 226BW does appear to be
better at doing this than some other models, but you should still be aware
of this potential issue. Additionally, it would appear that your specific
unit could use one of two different panels: a Samsung or an AU Optronics.
Both are TN film type panels, but reports suggest that the AUO panel
provides inferior picture quality.

Unfortunately, quality S-PVA, P-MVA, or S-IPS displays that provide a low
response time (and are therefore good for gaming) are generally expensive. I
would suggest buying a display locally, if possible, so you can exercise the
return policy if it doesn't suit you. My brother, an avid gamer, has a 20.1"
4:3 ViewSonic VP2030B that he loves. It sports a P-MVA panel and an 8ms
response time. It, however, will probably run you another $100.

It's decent--it's just JEDEC-standard CL5 PC2-6400 memory. It's about as
vanilla as it gets, but should work fine. If you fancy something more
exotic, you might try to find some CL4 memory, or even go with something
like PC2-8500. The P35 will read the EPP profiles and set the
clocks/voltages to the correct JEDEC-exceeding values for this speedier
memory. If you do go for higher-speed memory, don't buy anything that
requires over 2.2v to reach the advertised speeds--and generally try to find
the lowest voltage set you can for given speed/timing criteria.

The DS3R is interesting in that it sports 4 DDR2 and 2 DDR3 slots. Frankly,
however, I've never liked Frankenboards. :)
I went with the -DS3P, primarily due to the second x16 phy/x4 ele PCIe

For my home LAN the server has a static ip set in tcp/ip in the 10.0.0.x
series.

Static DHCP IP?

I'll assume this happens when I dialup to my isp only.

Do you set your IP at start up or is it done via config
(applies to linux only).

the ip addy was set 2 years ago. changed it back in Feb 07 when doing
my prelims for broadband. no change since this past glitch.

But what did your IP change to?

the ip addy changed to 192.168.0.1.

Have you lost
connectivity from your ISP or from your networking hardware at all?

No, never; unless I loose the phone service. And, even after the ip addy
changed, I was still able to dial out and connect to the www. got 3 vdef
updates from eset.com.

The only way I stumbled on the problem is when I opened NetNeighborhood at
one of my LAN clients and saw that all the clients except "srv" was present.
Went back to "srv" and found its' ip addy changed! Most odd.

Duncan

I remember at one point I installed NT4 on a 486 with 16M ram, and it
ran "ok." Now from what I hear, you need hot video card, multicore,
1gb ram, etc to run Vista "ok." kinda sad.

Indeed. The main reason for most non-gamers to upgrade it to be able run
a new OS ok...crappy code, no doubt.

I agree completely. Most of this is lazy programming - as proof,
one only needs to look at the various NASA probes, which clearly
can't be upgraded, yet NASA is often able to increase a probe's
abilities by improving the programming. (Game consoles are another
good example.) This is the route we need to take with terrestrial
computers - rather than rushing to greater and greater processing
power, why not improve performance of the software? Other than
video drivers, I can't think of any software that has gotten faster
with newer versions - more features are common, but generally the
entire thing slows down with every new release, thus requiring
greater resources.

World of Warcraft and OS X? ;)

It is pretty disappointing that really everyday usability hasn't
