Vista never lasted long enough on my box for me to try out the media

changes in the UI and do the tweaks to speed it up.

[H] Ram diagnostic?

2009-01-07 Thread DHSinclair

Thane,
Have you tried this RAM diagnostic tool from MS?

Just wondering? Finally got its' dot-iso burned to a CD-r/w, and it is now
running. I am trying to certify the remaining dimm in my "suspect" new
PC. So far, so good.

Best,
Duncan

I've tried it and use it from time to time. About the same as
MemTest - if it finds a failure, then you can be pretty sure it's a
bad DIMM. If it doesn't find a problem, it doesn't prove a good DIMM.

Thane,
Yes, proving a "good" dimm seems like proving a double-negative!!! Not
likely; well until we have a definitive standard's based diagnostic
module. But, the way thinks change so quickly, I now understand your
frustration.. :)

Looking for 10Krpm, but will accept 7200rpm;

Brian,
Yes, I do realize that what you say is quite true.
Let's just say I am still playing with old dinosaurs! I have
retired/killed two. This PC has some sentimental links. I'd like to keep
it burning trons. OK?

The m/b is an ancient Micron "Lightning II" type that came to me w/Adaptec
2940UW in place.
I have tried to tickle the EIDE/PATA logic, but it seems that Micron
'focused' its' bios to the Adaptec
scsi I/O. I am still studying this old PC (from time to time). No. I do
not know what I eventually wish to do with it yet. As long as I can keep
it working, happy, and sort of current, it stays in the inventory (until
formal retirement due to RTF).

I get it! Really, I do! All my other Clients are now combinations of
Pata/Sata on XP SP3.

All are running strong!
Thank you,
Duncan

[H] GTX 280 or wait for GTX 295?

2009-01-07 Thread Bobby Heid
Hey,

I am in the process of building a new machine. I have decided on a limit of
about $300 to spend on the video card. I am an NVidia guy so I have no
plans on an ATI card.

Guru3d.com has a review of the yet-to-be released Nvidia GTX 295 here
(retail - $500):

http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-295-preview/

Newegg.com has an EVGA GTX 280 for $425 - $100 IR - $20 MIR = $305

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130365
 &CMP=AFC-C8Junction

My questions for you all are:

1) Do you think the GTX 280s will come down in price more than this
once the 295s come out?

2) Aren't the 280s supposed to use the smaller die size (55nm I think)
like the 295s will use?

3) Anyone know any reasons why I should wait a bit longer to get a VC?

Thanks,

Bobby

I'm a huge believer in buying the previous generation of video cards when
the new ones come out. As long as you aren't one of those fanatics who are
driven to have the absolutely highest resolution and frame rate you should
be fine with any of the current crop.

I recently went from a X1950 to a 4850 and I'm happy as a clam.

[H] Re-introduction for Bino Gopal...

Hey folks, just wanted to take a minute and say "Hi!" as it's been a while;
so long in fact that I can't even figure out how long it's been since I've
been on the list, but I'm finally back!

It's good to see all the old familiar names in my email inbox, like
DHSinclair, and Steinie, and James Boswell, and Thane S, and Steve T, and
Jim McCraw, and Christopher Fisk, and Eli Allen and Harry McGregor and the
Brians (Weeden and Seitz)! Who said you can't go home again! ;) And the
list is still here and it's the same-old discussion with DH and all his
*OLD* toys and Thane still dealing with fixing other people's problems and
everyone asking what's the best; it's so cool!

Anyway, just wanted to say hi and hello and all that! Hope to be posting
more soon as I've had thoughts on a few threads I wanted to start, but just
no time right now (in addition to just getting sick this week), but you'll
see some soon! ;)

Now some nostalgia/history-related questions: is Jim still around as I see
that the mailman page says it's run by jedwards, but I haven't seen him post
on here yet.any others of the old guard around that I haven't seen post
either? Does someone have a history and the evolution of the group, either
btw? Maybe I'm just being nostalgic, but wanted to know how things
progressed while I was off saving the internet (ok just working on helping
the big dotcoms build out their websites) and find out what happened. Did
we ever have any other cons/meetups after 2001 or so, or has it all just
stayed virtual? I guess I must have lost track after I lost my Columbia.edu
email account, when I left NYC and moved to LA.anyone with better archives
than me know?! :P

Anyway, great to be back, and great to see that the "collective" (at least
this one, as I'm a member of at least three others) is still here! Cheers,
and Happy New Year 2009 btw!

Die shrink to 55nm is a huge win... I'd wait as well and I currently have a
GTX280 :)

2009-01-07 Thread Bobby Heid
But, I just thought of something. Once they shrink the dies, will the price
go up for the new ones? Remember, I don't really want to spend over $300.

Thanks,
Bobby

Re: [H] GTX 280 or wait for GTX 295?

2009-01-07 Thread Greg Sevart
Technically, a smaller GPU usually means a cheaper chip. That doesn't always
translate to street prices, of course. However, given the pressure AMD's
excellent 4800-series chips are putting on nvidia, they may see fit to drop
prices as their costs decrease.

Do you really mean the dual-GPU SLI GTX 295, or the single-GPU GTX 285 that
will be based on chips with the same 55nm process? If the former, you can
forget about $300. If the latter...it's possible. Look at the 8800GTS based
on G80 vs the 8800GTS based on G92. Faster card, but was less expensive as
the G92 die cost less to manufacture.

Thanks Duncan! Good to see you're still here! So on my nostalgic note,
whatever happened to Lopaka? Remember him? I met up with him and one other
guy at E3 in LA ~summer 2001...haven't seen him posting though!
