Be careful of chlorine and hydrogen buildups. Chlorine is a corrosive, and hydrogen explodes. (I used to do this with a video camera years ago.) Well, I went ahead and ordered this: Cyberpower CP1000AVRLCD - USB 1000VA 600W with LCD http://www.provantage.com/cyberpower-cp1000avrlcd~7CYPR03J.htm I decided to try something other than APC since it is not the one that will be connected to my pc. Thanks for all of the suggestions! Bobby
Re: [H] UPSes
Thanks for all of the suggestions. I had looked at APC for new batteries, but they wanted about $70. I had figured I might as well get a new unit if the battery is that much. I'll look around locally (didn't think about that) and check out some of the places that were mentioned is your responses. One question. Do the surge suppression parts in a UPS wear like those in a surge suppressor do? If so, I'm thinking it might be time to replace the unit anyway. I have had it for about 7 years or so and once had the batteries replaced in it under warranty when it puffed up. Thanks, Bobby
Re: [H] UPSes
JoeUser, Understand. But, for me it is cheaper to use my local sources. I save on shipping costs. And as far as I can tell these commercial replacements are of equal quality of the APC replacement batteries. I now use the PowerSonic gel cells and the Yuasa Genesis AGM cells. The original APC cells lasted 3-4 years. Time will tell of course. Oddly, I also have a Belkin 350VA Gold ups whose single 12v cell just failed recently. It lasted ~7 years of pretty constant use. Make sure you send the old battery back for recycling. -- Regards, joeuser - Still looking for the 'any' key...

Best, Duncan True, batteries are heavy as hell and soak up shipping charges, so if I could get mine locally I would. I'm going to give Battery Mart a try, only thing is I won't be able to say anything good about them for 3 years. 8) -- Regards, joeuser - Still looking for the 'any' key...

[H] UPSes
Hey, My old APC Back-UPS Pro's battery finally died. I run my monitor, router, and a few other pc related items off of it and I have an APC Back-UPS 1000 for my PC and external drive. I was looking around at Newegg, Frys, ZipZoomFly and Amazon for a replacement. On Amazon, I came across this CyberPower UPS: http://tinyurl.com/6gmtvo http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QZ3UG0/ref=pd_cp_e_2?pf_rd_p=250314601; pf_rd_s=center-41pf_rd_t=201pf_rd_i=B000XFXEDWpf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DERpf_rd _r=16473DRTPRP9Q9HZJKM6 I do not know anything about this brand of UPS. What do you all think? If nothing else, it sure looks cool. Here are a couple of others I was looking at, if you care to look: http://tinyurl.com/5z6ec9 http://tinyurl.com/5davhk http://tinyurl.com/6ohsh4 http://tinyurl.com/5g6ptf http://tinyurl.com/6f3urf I do not really want to spend over $150, but I want something decent that will last a bit during a power outage. Thanks, Bobby
Re: [H] UPSes
I have acquired a collection of UPSs over the years. APC, Belkin, Eveready, and some brand that is so obscure I can never remember it. but it has lasted 13 years! I have bought UPS on price and best deal, and I haven't been burned yet. , the one big advantage to a APC or a Belkin is warranty... if something goes wrong, no problem getting a replacement, or knowing that their damage protection warranty means something. And I will admit that if I was running something mission critical, like a Reef Aquarium, I would use APC. But assuming you are primarily interested in surge, and battery backup for in home general PC use I would get the best on sale rebate deal you can find, and don't worry about the brand. Re: [H] UPSes
Bobby, Do you have a 'commercial' electronics store available? Pull the dead battery out of your ups and take it to the store. They will either have a 'better' replacement, or, they will point you to to some place that does. APC replacement batteries are just way 2 expensive. I've replaced all of my ups batteries (APC). All good here! The old battery is junk. Replace the battery. APC ups devices are sorta like 'lifetime'. (now I will suffer the opinion-grief!) /shrug! Hi Bobby I replace the batteries in my UPS when they die with generic replacements from http://www.batterymart.com/c-replacement-ups-batteries.html. For example, a replacement for the battery in any BackUPS 650 (Pro, Pro PP, Pro S, regular, etc.) costs $29.95. A replacement for the BackUPS 1000 costs $59.90 If you don't see the model you have, call them and they'll check to see which battery replacement will fit your model. It's much more price effective to replace the battery than to buy a new UPS or even an official APC replacement battery. I've bought batteries for everything from hearing aids to tennis ball machines from Batterymart.com. I'm not saying they always have the best prices, but I've always been happy with their service and the quality of their products. I've used APC UPS' since 1995. Sizes from 400 to 1400. (I currently have three SmartUPS 1400 and two SmartUPS 1000 for my computers and peripherals, plus three BackUPS 1000 for phones, stereo, scanner, etc.) Regards, Bill

I did replace with APC batteries (in my old BackUPS models) at first. I didn't see any difference between the APC batteries and the ones from BatteryMart...except for the price. And, if anything, I've gotten better life with the replacements from Batterymart than from the *original* APC batteries, (the ones that came inside the UPS when it was new.) As they say though, YMMV.
