RE: [H] research questions

2007-10-13 Thread DHSinclair

Mark,
That is a good point, and, something that did cross my mind before I jumped
in. I was an ATT customer in SoCal years ago Fired them for General Tel,
which turned into Verizon (my first dsl experience!). I do still think
about this.

Yes, the top level execs and the bean counters are done. Now we wait
for the infrastructure to truly absorb the merger...and make all the necessary
connections.. :)
And, as it two phone companies, I can only slightly imagine what might
be going on in the IM shops of each entity!
Good thing this dsl thing is monthly. I did not have to do a yearly contract.
So, if something happens in the near/far future, Hmm, I'll deal with it then.
And maybe why BellSouth dropped the year minimum from their really
expensive offers soon after the merger. I have not gotten any
phone calls from Mumbai since the meger. LOL! Guess a new call center is
still in the works!
Best,
Duncan

OK Tim,
Believe the router is a gateway router. Maybe not. How would I know?
From my LAN's perspective, I am treating it as my gateway. All my
clients have
the router's IP addy as their gateway on the tcp/ip tab.

In any case, I now have the IP addys I think I need. Some make sense, some
do not.

Q1: I use Eudora. BellSouth seems to be dead to Eudora. A faq lists these
email clients:
Netscape 4.0, 4.5 to 4.77, 6 or 7
Outlook Express
Outlook 97/98/2K/2K2
Hmm. But, later on (more faqs) I find a setup procedure for Mozilla
Thunderbird.
So, all you TBird users, please advise. I do like/own Eudora (v5.1.1) and
would like to
continue unless it really is dead. Current plan is to use the Mozy setup
once the channel
goes hot and see what happens.

Q2: Seems the Bellsouth blocks/filters port 25. Believe this is PoPmail
port. Can I switch
Eudora to IMAP and truck on with Bellsouth?

Q3: Bellsouth uses the same server (mail.bellsouth.net) for both inbound
and outbound mail.
Is this normal? I do know that they seem to have extensive spam, junk,
etc, filtering. Perhaps
this is a good thing. :)

So I check out the news server for Bellsouth and find that it is:
(should I choose to do Opera or Agent!)
nxdomain.guide.opendns.com 208.69.32.130
and the server is in San Francisco, CA.
Q4: What's up with this? Are the news channels still as polluted as they
were in 1999?

So far, so good. Believe my due diligence is as complete as possible. For
now.
I'm off to check out Mozilla TBird..
Please accept my thanks to all who helped with replies and tips. Much
appreciated.
Now I just have to get hold of JE to change an addy and keep List mail
flowing!
Best,
Duncan

Switch to T-Bird, better ITHO of a former Eudora user.

If port 25 (outbound, to send mail) is blocked, the
SMTP server you're
contacting must support an alternative port known as
MSA @ port 587. GMail uses
different smtp port, 465. Pop3 (port 110 inbound) is
for checking mail and is
not likely blocked because it serves no purpose to do
so.

Server names have nothing to do with what the servers
do, but the ports have to
be unique for each service on the same IP address.

Can I assume that part of the xdsl install kit will be a sheet that lists
the
various IP addys for the servers I will need to use?
Servers like POP, Mail, SMTP, Login(?), DNS, etc.
I'm checking through my old Verizon credentials to see what I have/rcvd.

If not, do I cause any trouble if I spend time with WhoIs and/or my Trace
Route proggy to try and find out what I think I need?
Alternately, I suppose I could call the provider's Help Desk, but I am not
multi-lingual! LOL!

Thanks,
Duncan

You should get either an email or a sheet with that info. Alternately,
they probably have a website with that information, or you could ask
someone on DSLReports.com.

matter of configuration on the ISPs end.

That addy is NOT a UseNet server addy. Most of them are news.isp.com

Well it is quite simple. After you select your DSL modem and Gate Router.
I myself use Linksys Cable Modem, Linksys 4 Port/Wireless-N Router and a 8
port 1GB Switch. The 1GB switch is for the high speed transferring and
streaming data off of itunes server.

Good luck in the setup,

It more than likely is a gateway router. Most are.

Easy to fix. Just use the Pop and SMPT information they use on Outlook to
the other programs. I use Outlook now because I put client/friends info and
make appointments within Outlook.

Q2: Seems the Bellsouth blocks/filters port 25. Believe this is PoPmail

Most Internet providers do this. I have problems sending mail via my work
address. I just use my home address to send it with a reply-to my Work

Oh! Ya they are polluted with spam and pron like in those days.

So far, so good. Believe my due diligence is as complete as possible. For

Do you keep the big 3 emptied? I'm talking about In, Out Trash as they are
all loaded into ram when Eudora starts. If you filter everything to other
folders it helps quite a bit as I have a Rec'd Sent mailbox I empty the
